The wind and flames that continue to plague Southern California — and the long, costly recovery that lies ahead — have raised new concerns about hosting three major sporting events over the next three years.
World Cup matches are scheduled for SoFi Stadium in the summer of 2026. Then comes the 2027 Super Bowl, followed by the 2028 Summer Olympics.
With none of the region’s stadiums or arenas damaged so far, event organizers and government leaders have expressed confidence about pushing ahead.
“Los Angeles is defined by its resilience and determination,” Casey Wasserman, chairman of the LA28 organizing committee, said in a statement. “The strength of our communities and our unity in tough times make this city extraordinary, and when Los Angeles welcomes the world in 2028, our spirit will shine brighter than ever before.”
But others worry about sports usurping resources and valuable attention that should be devoted to rebuilding.
“Any city preparing for three massive events has its hands full,” said Jules Boykoff, who studies the politics of sport at Pacific University in Oregon. “If these good people in the government are working on the Olympics and the Super Bowl, they are not working on other issues.”
Each of the events will have a different impact on the city. The Super Bowl will take place on a Sunday at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. The World Cup, also at SoFi, will feature eight matches in the space of a month.
The Summer Games will involve thousands of athletes, dozens of venues across the region and an estimated 15 million visitors over 17 days in July of 2028. That will be followed the next month by the Paralympics, another event expected to bring thousands of athletes and spectators to the city.
Only two proposed Olympic venues were threatened by wildfires. Riviera Country Club, which would host golf, fell inside the Palisades fire evacuation zone and UCLA, which would serve as an athletes village in 2028, was just outside the warning boundary.
SoFi was about 15 miles from the nearest flames, yet the NFL decided to shift Monday night’s playoff game between the Rams and Minnesota Vikings to Phoenix.
“The guiding principle for us has always been, don’t interfere and do anything that’s going to impact negatively on public safety,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in an interview. “Make sure you’re not sapping resources from the responders.”
Conservative commentators such as Trish Regan and Charlie Kirk called for a stronger response.
“We must move the Olympics out of [California] as fast as possible,” Regan posted on X, adding that the state’s leadership “cannot be trusted.”
The idea of switching host cities is not new. As early as 1908, the International Olympic Committee wanted Rome as host but shifted to London after Mount Vesuvius erupted, devastating the nearby province of Naples.
It is ironic that Southern California now finds itself in a comparable situation.
Before the 1924 Summer Games, when host Paris was beset by floods and economic struggles, L.A. civic leaders volunteered their city as a last-minute replacement. France was able to stage the Games, but the offer to help was not forgotten.
“It got them in the good graces of the IOC,” said Mark Dyreson, a sports historian at Penn State. “They developed this mythology that L.A. was the great backup city.”
The Games eventually came here in 1932 and 1984, reinforcing the ever-ready reputation. Plans for 2028 will rely almost entirely on existing venues such as SoFi, the Intuit Dome and the historic Coliseum, avoiding the massive construction required of past hosts.
Capital costs notwithstanding, the Olympics will require additional police, traffic control, garbage collection and other public services. LA28 has vowed to generate enough revenue to reimburse the city and pay all other expenses in its $7-billion budget, but should there be a shortfall, city and state officials agreed to contribute hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars.
Man-hours are another issue. Planning for the World Cup, Super Bowl and Olympics is well underway, with various cities preparing studies, negotiating contracts and forming subcommittees. Council members have spent hours discussing the matter.
The extra workload could be problematic for leaders also dealing with wildfires.
“How can we handle these things properly at the same time?” said Eric Sheehan, a spokesman for the grass-roots NOlympics LA group. “The only alternative is to short-change devastated residents.”
In regards to the Games, the host city contract that L.A. signed allows the IOC to terminate under specific circumstances; also, organizers could plead their case to Olympic officials. Denver was awarded the 1976 Winter Olympics, then withdrew two years later when voters rejected a funding referendum. Those Games landed in Innsbruck, Austria.
Despite the many challenges facing Southern California, critics don’t see L.A. backing off. “I fully expect leaders in Los Angeles to fashion a ‘recovery’ narrative,” said Boykoff, the Pacific University professor.
Japanese officials took this approach when bidding for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear plant disaster, claiming that big events can lift community spirits and boost the economy. The IOC always has liked the idea of the Games having a positive social impact.
Gov. Gavin Newsom already touched on this theme for L.A., talking to NBC News about “all that opportunity, that pride and spirit that comes from hosting those three iconic [events].”
When asked if the city can be ready in time, he said: “My humble position, and it’s not just being naively optimistic, that only reinforces the imperative moving quickly, doing it in the spirit of collaboration and cooperation.”
The governor predicted that President-elect Trump, who has made a habit of attending high-profile games, will be motivated to help.
At this point, with fires still active in the region, World Cup officials say they are monitoring the situation. LA28 leaders are focused on immediate concerns — some employees have been affected — and will turn to long-range plans later.
The past week has shown that everything can change in the blink of an eye, so three years is a long time. If L.A. decides to stick with its plans, Boykoff warned, “you kind of have to expect the unexpected.”
In the wake of devastating wildfires that have ravaged Los Angeles and surrounding areas, many are questioning whether the city should reconsider its plans to host major sporting events such as the World Cup, Super Bowl, and Olympics. While these events are typically seen as opportunities for economic growth and global recognition, some argue that the resources and attention needed to host them would be better spent on rebuilding and recovery efforts in the fire-affected regions.
Others believe that hosting these events could actually provide a much-needed boost to the local economy and morale, potentially bringing in much-needed revenue and tourism dollars to the area.
What do you think? Should fire-torn LA drop plans for these major sporting events in order to focus on recovery efforts, or should they proceed as planned in hopes of bringing some much-needed positivity to the region? Share your thoughts below.

“It’s always been a super important detail for me to spin in every direction, and try and keep a bit of soul in there with the switch McTwist at the start before it gets into a lot of spinning, really happy to get the triple in there this year as well which was a big goal of mine.
“It’s one of the best pipes in the world, there are no excuses but to go 110% on this thing, so you’ve got to bring your best if you want to stand on top, or even on the podium for that matter.”

The list of Pegasus World Cup winners shows more favorites crossing the finish line first, but 2023 saw longshot Art Collector payoff more for bettors as the oldest horse (age 6) to win the race.

How bet types work and bet horse racing on your phone
Race 13 – $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational
- Locked (5/2)
- Saudi Crown (9/2)
- Skippylongstocking (10/1)
- White Abarrio (3/1)
Locked (5/2) raced just two times last year for trainer Todd Pletcher, and won the Cigar Mile (G2) at Aqueduct in December. Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez rides the son of the great Gun Runner and brother of Sierra Leone, both Breeders’ Cup Classic champions. Locked was the race favorite and posted his fastest-ever speed figure in the Cigar Mile. He was injured last year which kept him off the Kentucky Derby Trail, and handicappers and race analysts love this horses talent, but not the far outside draw with the short run to the first turn.
The front-running galloping gray Saudi Crown (9/2) failed to fire in last Nov. Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, but he won races on either side of the BC race. At his best, trainer Brad Cox likes his chances, as he won two of his first four graded stakes starts with a pair of runner-up finishes as well.
White Abarrio (3/1) is another gray horse to watch who won the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Clasic. He’s back in the care of original trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. with top jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. riding. “His wins in the 2023 Whitney Stakes and Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic tower over the best efforts from most of the other Pegasus contenders,” America’s Best Racing notes, and “he showed tantalizing glimpses of returning to that level in his two lead-in races to Saturday’s Pegasus.”
Pletcher’s other runner in the Pegasus World Cup is Crupi (15/1), a son of the great Curlin who finished 3rd in this race last year but has won just 1-of-6 starts since. He’s a one-dimensional closer who may not get the needed speed on the lead to catch the top runners down the stretch.
Stronghold (10/1) ships in from California having won last year’s Santa Anita Derby (G1) at this same 1 1/8 mile distance. ABR says he’s “an intriguing longshot in the Pegasus as he’s only finished worse than second once in 10 starts.”
Mystik Dan (8/1) won last year’s Kentucky Derby as a 18/1 longshot, but has not won since in three starts with a best 2nd place finish in the Preakness.
Skippylongstocking (10/1) is clearly capable of contending and hitting the board running around two turns at his preferred distance for trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. He’s won 5 times with four other in the money finishes in 13 starts at the distance, but not last year’s Pegasus when he pulled up and did not finish the race.
Race 12 – $1 million Pegasus World Cup Turf
- Nations Pride (2/1)
- Integration (3/1)
- Major Dude (6/1)
- Win for the Money (12/1)
The Pegasus World Cup Turf includes 3-time North America Grade 1 winner Nations Pride (2/1) as the favorite and clear win contender. He won last summer’s Arlington Million for trainer Charlie Appleby, beating runner-up Integration (3/1), who finished 5th in this race last year as the favoritef for trainer Shug McGaughey. Longshot Battle of Normandy (20/1) is also entered for McGaughey with four straight wins (one graded stakes).
Major Dude (6/1) won the Grade 2 Fort Lauderdale last out in December for his 7th win in 18 starts while posting his fastest-ever speed figure in a tight finish. He’s 2-for-2 in graded stakes starts at Gulfstream for trainer Todd Pletcher, who has jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. riding again.
Win for the Money (12/1) is a live longshot, according to America’s Best Racing. He won last year’s Woodbine Mile and was part of a recent three-way win photo in the Ft. Lauderdale, winding up third after chasing the pace.
Gulfstream Track Announcer
In the Sport of Kings, races aren’t made just by the animals that run them, but by the voices that call them. One of the very best track announcers is Pete Aiello – a favorite at Gulfstream Park. I met Pete at the 2023 Breeders Cup World Championships at Santa Anita. The South Florida native called a few Breeders’ Cup races that day, and he’ll be back home at Gulfstream providing fans a great racing experience calling the Pegasus World Cup Day races.
You can bet on it.
MORE FROM FORBES
The Pegasus World Cup is one of the most prestigious horse racing events in the world, and the 2025 edition is set to be another thrilling race at Gulfstream Park. With a field of top-class horses competing for a massive purse, fans and bettors alike are eagerly awaiting the action. Here’s a look at some of the key contenders in the field and their odds to win the race:
1. Midnight Bourbon – Odds: 5/1
2. Life Is Good – Odds: 3/1
3. Happy Saver – Odds: 6/1
4. Hot Rod Charlie – Odds: 4/1
5. Mandaloun – Odds: 7/1
6. Medina Spirit – Odds: 8/1While these are just a few of the horses in the field, they are some of the top contenders based on recent performances and form. Of course, anything can happen in horse racing, so it’s always wise to consider all factors before placing a bet.
As for race day picks for the 2025 Pegasus World Cup, I’m leaning towards Life Is Good as the favorite to take home the victory. With a strong track record and impressive performances in recent races, I believe he has what it takes to come out on top.

With several of the country’s best dirt horses set to enter the starting gate on Saturday, you’ll want to see what racing reporter and insider Michelle Yu has to say before making any 2025 Pegasus World Cup picks, given that she correctly picked the winner of last year’s Pegasus World Cup.
Few people in racing are as well-connected as Yu. An on-air host and reporter who has provided racing analysis for TVG, HRTV and the Breeders’ Cup, Yu has spent a lifetime in racing. Prior to her television career, she worked for trainers Steve Asmussen and Ron Moquett. She also is married to Santa Anita-based trainer Ryan Hanson.
Yu also has tremendous handicapping chops. In a wide-open Kentucky Derby in 2021, she gave out Medina Spirit, who crossed the finish line first, as the winner at 12-1. In Pool 5 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager three years ago, she suggested a play on All Other 3-Year-Olds, which cashed at a whopping 18-1 when Rich Strike won the Derby.
Last year she correctly called National Treasure to win the Pegasus World Cup, predicted Stronghold’s upset win in the Santa Anita Derby and smashed the exacta in the Apple Blossom Handicap. On the Belmont Stakes undercard, she nailed National Treasure’s win in the Met Mile and had the winner and exacta in the Woody Stephens Stakes. She closed out the year by hitting the exacta in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Anyone who has followed her is way up.
For the 2025 Pegasus World Cup, Yu has made her picks and constructed her bets
One surprise: Yu is completely fading Locked, even though he is the 5-2 favorite. “If Locked drew better, he would be my top pick, but I hate his draw and he still needs to improve,” Yu told SportsLine. Yu is not including Locked in any of her wagers.
Instead, Yu is high on a double-digit longshot who is “getting a chance to play with the big boys.” She is including this horse in her 2025 Pegasus World Cup bets, and so should you. You ABSOLUTELY need to see her picks before locking in any of your own.
So what double-digit longshot is a must-back in the Pegasus World Cup 2025? And how has Yu constructed her wagers? … Join SportsLine right now to get Michelle Yu’s 2025 Pegasus World Cup picks and bets, all from the racing insider who nailed the winner of last year’s Pegasus!

Jack Crawford made the most prestigious annual Alpine skiing race his first career World Cup victory, becoming the first Canadian in 42 years to win the Hahnenkamm downhill in Kitzbühel, Austria.
Crawford, the 2023 World super-G champion, skied from bib 20 into the lead by eight hundredths of a second over Swiss Alexis Monney. Another Canadian, Cameron Alexander, placed third.
“It’s just a huge milestone,” Crawford told Swiss broadcaster SRF. “Everybody dreams of winning this race as a downhiller.”
Crawford also won the 2022 Olympic combined bronze medal, but the 27-year-old had zero World Cup victories before this.

Canada won four Kitzbühel downhills in the early 1980s with Ken Read (who was in attendance Saturday, as was Arnold Schwarzenegger and Zlatan Ibrahimovic), Steve Podborski and Todd Brooker in the era of the Crazy Canucks.
“A lot of those guys from back in the day, Ken Read has been a huge part in my bring up in skiing,” said Crawford, who as a youth hockey player in Toronto counted Connor McDavid as a teammate.
Europeans had won the last 24 Kitzbühel downhills since American Daron Rahlves’ victory in 2003.
“I’m still a little bit in shock,” Crawford said. “Hopefully tonight, when I’m lifting the Kitzbühel trophy overhead, then it’ll feel totally real.”
This is the first time two Canadians made the same men’s or women’s Alpine World Cup podium since 2012 (Jan Hudec, Eric Guay).
“Knowing that both of us are capable of it,” Crawford said of he and Alexander, “just to show that we can contend with the best teams in the world.”
The Kitzbühel World Cup continues Sunday with a men’s slalom, live on Peacock at 4:15 and 7:30 a.m. ET.
On the women’s World Cup, Federica Brignone won a downhill by one hundredth over fellow Italian Sofia Goggia in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, on Saturday.
Lindsey Vonn, the 2010 Olympic gold medalist back this season from a five-year retirement, hit bumpy terrain late in her run, bouncing her wide of a gate for a DNF. Vonn was 16th fastest at her last intermediate split.
A women’s super-G is scheduled for Garmisch-Partenkirchen on Sunday in what is expected to be Vonn’s last race before the World Championships from Feb. 4-16 in Saalbach, Austria.
