  • Luka Dončić’s dad Saša slams ‘hypocrisy’ of ex-Mavericks star’s trade to Lakers: ‘Luka absolutely doesn’t deserve this’

Luka Dončić released a letter to Dallas touting the city as a “special place” and Mavericks fans as “special fans” upon the news of his stunning trade to the Los Angeles Lakers.

His father Saša Dončić was considerably less subdued in his reaction to the Mavericks’ decision to deal away their 25-year-old franchise player and perennial MVP candidate. Saša Dončić, a former professional player and head coach in Slovenia, made his feelings known in a candid interview with Arena Sport Slovenia on Sunday.

Without naming names, he slammed the “hypocrisy” of Mavericks brass involved in the trade.

“I understand there comes a moment when you disagree with a certain philosophy — you don’t like this or that player, all good, get it,” Saša Dončić said, per Arena Sport translation.

“But I think that exactly this secrecy, or should I say from some individuals, maybe even hypocrisy, this hurts me personally. Because I think that Luka absolutely doesn’t deserve this.”

Saša echoed Luka’s professed love for Dallas while touting his charitable work in the city since joining the Mavericks from Europe in 2018.

“I feel like this is very unfair from some individuals because I know that Luka respected Dallas a lot,” Saša continued. “He respected the whole city, Dallas. Helped children. It was never a problem for him to go to hospitals and to — I don’t know, orphanages and to all these charity events.”

Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison has been the Mavericks’ public face of the trade decision in multiple interview since the deal took place late Saturday. In an interview with ESPN, he justified the trade by declaring that “defense wins championships.”

“I believe that defense wins championships,” Harrison told ESPN. “I believe that getting an All-Defensive center and an All-NBA player with a defensive mindset gives us a better chance. We’re built to win now and in the future.”

    Davis, 31, is a three-time blocks champion and a five-time NBA All-Defensive Team selection.

According to an ESPN report, Harrison was dissatisfied with Luka Dončić’s conditioning, and there was “extreme frustration throughout the organization about Doncic’s lackadaisical approach to diet and conditioning, which Mavs decision-makers believed negatively impacted his durability.”

Dončić has been sidelined for 19 games with a calf injury that he suffered on Christmas. Saša addressed the reports about Luka’s conditioning with Arena Sport.

“It wasn’t even a problem last year since, I am saying again — one individual said he’s not fit enough that he played, I don’t know, 100 games practically 40 minutes with two, three players constantly on him,” Saša said. “That he was beaten and you say such things about him. I feel that this is very unfair from certain individuals.

“You traded him. Stand by your actions. But don’t look for excuses, alibis and that’s it.”

Last season, Dončić played 37.5 minutes per game in 70 regular-season games, then 40.9 minutes per game in 22 postseason games while leading the Mavericks to the NBA Finals as a first-team All-NBA selection for a fifth-straight season.

Now, less than a season after leading the Mavericks to their first Finals appearance since 2011, Dončić will attempt to do the same for the Western Conference-rival Lakers.

Luka Dončić’s dad Saša slams ‘hypocrisy’ of ex-Mavericks star’s trade to Lakers: ‘Luka absolutely doesn’t deserve this’

In a recent interview, Saša Dončić, the father of NBA star Luka Dončić, expressed his frustration and disappointment with the trade that sent his son from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers. Saša Dončić criticized the “hypocrisy” of the decision and insisted that Luka did not deserve to be traded.

“Luka has given his all to the Mavericks and has been a loyal and dedicated player for years. It is truly disappointing to see him being traded in this manner,” Saša Dončić said. “The hypocrisy of the situation is evident, and it is clear that Luka absolutely doesn’t deserve this treatment.”

Saša Dončić went on to praise his son’s work ethic and commitment to the game, highlighting the impact Luka has had on the Mavericks and the NBA as a whole. He urged fans and analysts to consider the human side of the trade and to remember the hard work and dedication that Luka has put into his career.

The trade of Luka Dončić to the Lakers has been met with mixed reactions from fans and analysts, with many questioning the motives behind the move. Saša Dončić’s comments shed light on the emotional toll that trades can have on players and their families, emphasizing the need for empathy and understanding in these situations.

As Luka Dončić prepares to start a new chapter with the Lakers, his father’s words serve as a reminder of the sacrifices and challenges that come with being a professional athlete. Despite the disappointment of the trade, Saša Dončić remains supportive of his son and confident in his ability to succeed in his new team.

  • Jesse Eisenberg knows ‘A Real Pain’ is getting acclaim. His dad put it in perspective : NPR

A note from Wild Card host Rachel Martin: I appreciate Jesse Eisenberg not just because he’s really good at acting, but because he helps me raise my kids. That may sound unnecessarily provocative, but here’s what I mean: Eisenberg tends to play male characters with deep interior lives. Characters who spend a lot of time feeling things like anxiety, fear, insecurity. They are also big hearted and kind. And on screen, we see Eisenberg’s characters trying to find their place in a world where men are expected to flatten their vulnerabilities and all of their emotions to fit into some antiquated definition of masculinity.

What does this have to do with my kids? Well, I’ve got two boys, they’re 10 and 12, and I very much want for them to turn into young men who are comfortable living through every one of their emotions. And maybe I’m giving Hollywood too much power in my life, but it feels affirming as a parent to see these kinds of male characters on screen.

Cases in point: The Squid and the Whale, The Art of Self-Defense, the show Fleishman is in Trouble. And of course the movie that’s getting a ton of accolades right now — including a best original screenplay and supporting actor nomination at the Oscars — A Real Pain, which Eisenberg wrote and directed. He also co-stars in the film alongside Kieran Culkin.

Question 1: What’s a moment when you remember being brave as a teenager?

Jesse Eisenberg: Well, so in my senior year of high school, I kind of came into my own a little bit. I grew up in New Jersey, and in my senior year of high school, I transferred to a performing arts high school in New York City. And it was like I just became, like, an adult overnight going there. But the bravest thing I did was probably cut school one day to go see a Broadway matinee of Judgment at Nuremberg — which maybe tells you enough about me to understand my full personality.

My friends and I — we were planning it like a heist at math class in the morning, like, “Yeah, cool I’m gonna meet you at lunch and I think we can get student tickets for the last row mezzanine.” So our big transgression in high school was going to see a Broadway matinee.

I’m sure it would have been the kind of thing if our teachers caught us, they’d be like, “Oh my God, you sweet nerds. Of course. Go. That’s great. I’m giving you an A anyway.”

Question 2: Has ambition ever led you astray?

Eisenberg: I mean, yeah, I think about it all the time. In an attempt for me to stay busy and active I sometimes will push for my things to be done sometimes, even if they’re premature. But I will say, I’m not naturally an ambitious person for myself, but I really am quite a worried person about failing. And so it creates an ambition in me by necessity to just try to stay busy at all times.

Rachel Martin: How have you managed that fear of failure? Because that’s inevitable. I mean you’ve had them, right?

Eisenberg: Yeah. I’ve had far more failures than successes. And my father is a sweet person. He’s a teacher and has such sweet perspectives on my life. So, like, with this movie, A Real Pain, it’s doing well and everything and, you know, there’s a feeling inside of me that this should be the norm and like, “I’m a failure if this is not the norm.”

And my dad has kind of a 60,000-foot view or 30,000-foot view – depending on your airline – of what this means. And he tells me things like, “If you have two of these in your career, that’s a cool thing.” A really successful career to have in the arts is to have, like, let’s say two movies that you make that are regarded this nicely.

And so that puts things in perspective, because what it tells me is that this should not be expected to be the norm. And then my friend Jim tells me all the time that if you want a career in the arts, success is basically staying active and busy. The successes are not the one or two things that spike.

Question 3: What is your best defense against despair?

Eisenberg: I married a woman who has the same values as me. I mean, she’s a far better person — she teaches disability social justice and awareness in public schools. And her mom ran a domestic violence shelter for 35 years. So she comes from this kind of world.

And I’m preoccupied with privilege versus struggle and meaning versus emptiness, etc. But the interesting thing that occurs to me, though, is that my wife – she just does something about it. She always just says, “OK, so what are you going to do about it?”

So if I’m, like, feeling miserable, she’s like, “OK, so what are you going to do about it?” Or I’m like, “I feel so bad about what happened to my friend.” She always is just like, “Oh, let’s call him now and try to get him a job. Oh, you know what? I can call my friend. She actually knows somebody who just lost their job here. Maybe they can talk. Maybe they can work together.” There’s not an instinct in her to wallow in it or to, like, make it about herself.

I make it about myself. “Oh God, I feel so guilty.” She’s not even aware that she’s doing something different than me. It’s just the way she’s wired. And so I look to her all the time, and we’ve been together forever.

Martin: I think it’s so lovely that you found each other.

Eisenberg: Oh, I’m lucky. I’m lucky. Because I’m not wired for anything good. She’s wired to do all this good stuff.

Martin: That’s not true. I’ve known you for an hour, and Jesse Eisenberg I don’t think you’re wired to do nothing good.

Eisenberg: No, no, no. I’m a thoughtful person, but it doesn’t lead to, like, you know, benevolent action. She’s just, like, she’s less contemplative than me. She’s just very active and has a good heart.

Jesse Eisenberg’s latest play, ‘A Real Pain,’ has been receiving critical acclaim, but the actor’s dad has a unique perspective on his success. In a recent interview with NPR, Eisenberg shared how his father’s perspective has helped him navigate the highs and lows of his career. Check out the full story here!

  • Michigan woman, 26, wins $4M jackpot on lottery ticket gifted to her by her dad

LANSING, MI — An Oakland County woman is celebrating a gift that will change her life after she won a $4 million jackpot on the Michigan Lottery’s $150,000,000 Spectacular instant game.

“My dad bought a $150,000,000 Spectacular instant game ticket and gave it to me,” said the 26-year-old winner, who chose to remain anonymous. “I was surprised when he handed it to me, and I asked him why he bought it for me. He said it was a ‘just because gift,’ which I though was really nice of him.

“When I scratched the ticket off, I was stunned to see that it was a $4 million winner. I had so many emotions going through my body. I screamed. I cried. I was and still am shocked I won $4 million.”

The winning ticket was sold at the Light House Liquor, located at 13651 West 9 Mile Road in Oak Park. The winner elected to receive her prize as a one-time lump-sum payment of about $2.7 million rather than the annuity. With her winnings, she plans on saving the money.

“Winning $4 million is life changing for anyone, but especially for this young woman who is only 26 years old,” said Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli. “She will be able to use this prize to positively impact her life for many years to come.”

For the latest on Michigan Lottery, check out the official Michigan Lottery site, which also offers more information on instant tickets, raffles and other lottery games.

The last players from Michigan to win a Mega Millions or Powerball jackpot is the Breakfast Club lottery club which claimed a $842 million jackpot in June 2024. The members plan to use the money to buy a home in Florida and travel.

And while they were lucky winners, it’s smart for players to check their tickets immediately as a Mega Millions winner worth $1 million sold in Southfield in 2023 went unclaimed. The money instead went to the state’s School Aid Fund.

  • Bronny James shows dad LeBron, Lakers he has plenty to learn in return from G League

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bronny James got the surprise call to play in the first quarter for the Lakers and finished with the first serious playing time of his NBA career.

    It wasn’t great.

Bronny took off on a fast break and his shot was rejected by Adam Bona.

He got torched by 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey any time they were remotely matched up.

His box score, well, it wasn’t any better: Bronny was scoreless for the Lakers in their 118-104 loss to Philadelphia on Tuesday night. He missed three 3-pointers, all five shots overall and had three turnovers.

Bronny played 15 minutes just four days after he dropped a career-high 31 points for the South Bay Lakers of the G League.

“Maybe put him in a tough spot, flying out yesterday, nationally televised game and all that stuff,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said. “He didn’t play well. But he’s been playing great in the stay-ready games and he’s been playing great in the G. I have confidence but obviously didn’t provide that at a high level.”

Dad knows Bronny still has plenty to learn in the NBA.

“He was able to get behind the defense on one and find Jaxson (Hayes) for a dunk. That was good,” LeBron James said. “Obviously missed his shots. It’s just about him just getting more and more comfortable. It’s his first extensive minutes with us. We had that first game where it was just a moment, and it was a great moment, but tonight was his first opportunity to be with the big guys, the big club. He’s going to continue to use that to get better and better, just like the first time he played with the G League.”

LeBron and Bronny made NBA history on Oct. 22 when they became the first father and son to play together during the Lakers’ season-opening win over Minnesota. Bronny then scored his first NBA basket for the Lakers in Cleveland on Oct. 30 at the arena where he watched his father as a child.

Bronny had not played more than 6 minutes in any of his first 12 games and had scored four points all season.

“Just bringing energy. My coaches are telling me to come in and play smart, play my game and play for my teammates,” he said. “Just trying to do the right thing as a rookie is my main priority.”

LeBron and the Lakers have already said Bronny will spend ample time this season with their G League affiliate as he works on his game.

“Just reps is the biggest thing for me,” Bronny said.

LeBron had 31 points, nine assists and eight rebounds, though father and son did share one other distinction against the 76ers: Bona blocked them both.

The Lakers had been 16-2 this season against teams with losing records and seemed poised to build on the win column playing a 76ers team without injured stars Joel Embiid and Paul George. Maxey carried the scoring load with 43 points and the Lakers were hampered when Anthony Davis left in the first half with an abdominal muscle strain.

Davis walked to the locker room with his right hand over his stomach when he left with 2:10 to go in the first quarter. Davis had four points in 10 minutes before he was hurt. He had 42 points and 23 rebounds a night earlier in a victory at Charlotte.

“I mean, when our best player goes out, it’s always challenging,” James said. “When AD goes down, when any one of our guys go down throughout the course of the game, it’s just tough.”

Without Davis, it was a rough one for the Lakers, who had a four-game winning streak snapped.

“Three in four nights, back-to-back, I’m not sure where our collective brains were at,” Redick said.

  • Jennifer Lawrence Adds Dad Shoes to Her Maternity Wardrobe

When it comes to her mom-to-be wardrobe, Jennifer Lawrence is embracing her inner dad.

Today, the actor and her husband, art gallery director Cooke Maroney, ventured to The Row store on the Upper East Side. Lawrence—dressing for both the freezing temperatures and the twilight of her pregnancy—kept it comfortable in lots of layers. Over a white T-shirt, she wore a blue gingham button-up, which she paired with white under-the-bump sweatpants. She bundled up in a black wool coat and added a white scarf with a dainty multicolored pattern.

But it was Lawrence’s shoe choice that demanded the most attention. With a pair of mustard yellow socks, she wore chunky New Balance 1906R x Aime Leon Dore sneakers in mint green and black. While she’s the quintessential Upper West Side mom, in her chunky ALD New Balances, Lawrence was dressing the part of a Lower East Side dad.

  • Alijah Arenas commits to USC basketball on NBA dad Gilbert Arenas’ show

Eric Musselman just made his first big splash in the Los Angeles recruiting scene.

In less than a year at the helm of USC men’s basketball, Musselman has landed one of the nation’s top 2025 high school basketball prospects in Chatsworth High’s Alijah Arenas, the son of former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas.

Arenas made the announcement live on his father’s podcast, Gil’s Arena Thursday afternoon.

“For me it felt like the best it,” Arenas said of the decision. “Being on campus made me feel special.”

More than getting Arenas to commit, the signing shows how serious Musselman is about recruiting is own backyard. Keeping talent home is a huge coup to any college coach. Musselman gets huge points here.

Arenas, who reclassified in December from the 2026 to 2025 class, is ranked the No. 10 overall prospect in 2025, according to 247Sports.com. He chose USC over Kanas, Kentucky, Louisville, and Arizona.

The rangy, 6-foot-6 guard was selected to be a McDonald’s All-American this year after averaging 31.8 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game. Arenas is the first McDonald’s All-American selected from the LA City Section since 2009 (Renardo Sidney, Westchester).

Arenas’ father, Gilbert Arenas, was a standout at Grant High of the City Section before going on to play at Arizona and in the NBA. It’s a full circle moment for Gilbert, who played for Eric Musselman when Musselman was the head coach of the Golden State Warriors in 2002-03.

  • Steven Spielberg Reveals He ‘Never Even Thought’ About Being a Dad Until Directing This Famous Movie

It’s not often that work is a driving factor for making someone want to become a parent. Sure, jobs are a major talking point in terms of what postpartum life will look like, but it’s rare that we hear stories about careers being the catalyst to parenthood.

And yet … Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg says he “never even thought” about fatherhood until he made E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

    More from SheKnows

During a panel at the TCM Classic Film Festival, Spielberg sat alongside Barrymore and chatted about the famed 1982 film. They both agreed the movie was life-changing. For Barrymore, it jumpstarted her career. For Spielberg, it made him reflect on his personal life.

“Up until that point — ’81, ’82 — I was just making movies,” Spielberg said, per People. “That was my life. I was obsessed with telling stories, but making E.T. made me want to be a father for the first time. I never even thought about that until E.T.”

It was working alongside then-6-year-old Barrymore that made the 35-year-old want to have kids of his own. “I didn’t ruin that for you?” Barrymore quipped.

“The opposite,” Spielberg said to his goddaughter.

In fact, the director now has seven adult kids. He shares son Max with his ex-wife Amy Irving, and kids Sasha, Sawyer, Mikaela, and Destry with wife Kate Capshaw. He is also stepdad to Capshaw’s kids Jessica and Theo.

In 2022, during a special 40th anniversary celebration of the beloved sci-fi film, the Jurassic Park director also talked about E.T. setting him on a path to fatherhood.

“I didn’t want to have kids because it was not a kind of equation that made sense for me as I was going from movie to movie to movie, script to script,” he told Variety. “It never occurred to me until halfway through E.T.”

“I was a parent on that film,” Spielberg added, saying that “in a way” a director is a dad or mom. He added that he felt protective of the young cast members, “especially” Barrymore.

“And I started thinking, ‘Well, maybe this could be my real life someday.’ It was the first time that it occurred to me that maybe I could be a dad … I really felt that that would be my big production.”

During the recent panel, Spielberg admitted that because of his seven kids and six grandkids, E.T. is probably his own movie that he’s seen the most.

“I’ve shown the film to all my kids and a couple of my grandkids,” he said, “Some of them are still too young because I’m always worried about them being worried about E.T. and I want to let them know before they turn the corner and are surprised by something, what to expect.”
