  • Investigation begins after deadly medical jet crash in Philly – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth


    A day after the tragedy, transportation officials warned the crash site of a Jet Rescue Air Ambulance in Northeast Philadelphia could remain an active scene for days or even weeks.

    “I want to stress this was a high-impact crash, and the plane is highly fragmented,” said National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

    Homendy said their focus is finding the cockpit voice recorder.

    The agency hopes it provides answers about why the Learjet 55 took a nosedive less than a minute after departing northeast Philadelphia airport.  

    “The condition could be fragmented, could be damaged. I will say that we have an incredible team at our headquarters, our office of research and engineering who have significant expertise in repairing damaged cockpit voice recorders and flight data recorders. In fact, we’re known throughout the world. Other countries send their black boxes to us to fix. And so hopefully, once we can find it, that’s the biggest question right now, we can take that back to our lab and evaluate it,” she said.

    A spokesperson for the air ambulance company said they were transporting a pediatric patient, who had come to the U.S. for life-saving treatment, home to Mexico.

    The patient, an escort, and four crew members died in the fiery collision, along with one person on the ground.

    Philadelphia’s mayor said 19 others were injured.

    The NTSB has ruled the crash an accident, though it’s still working to determine a cause.

    “My initial thoughts are that there’s some kind of an elevator issue with the airplane causing it to pitch down and the pilots not being able to arrest the descent,” said aviation attorney and pilot Ladd Sanger.

    Sanger said the agency could consider several scenarios.

    “First, the weather was pretty poor from a visibility standpoint, and there have been business jet crashes where, on takeoff, the pilots got spatial disorientation and lost control of the airplane. I’ve also worked on cases where there has been an autopilot malfunction,” he said.

    Sanger said there’s also the possibility of a bird or drone strike or ice accumulation. It’s just too soon to know.

    Saturday, Secretary Of Transportation Sean Duffy shared a video to “X” saying he’s committed to transparency.

    “In the coming days, we’re going to have more announcements. I want Americans to feel confident in American air travel,” said Secretary Duffy.

    The FAA is working with the NTSB to investigate the crash.

    Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson reprised their roles in “True Detective” for a video pitch to the Texas Legislature called “True to Texas.”

    But beneath the reunion that had many fans reminiscing is a deeper message to the Texas Legislature.

    “Every dollar from this incentive puts $4 back into the state of Texas,” McConaughey said.

    Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick announced his top 40 senate bills for this session on Wednesday. Among them is Senate Bill 22, “Establishing Texas as America’s Film Capital.” Another bill on the list, Senate Bill 1, which outlines the budget for the state, includes $498 million that would “revamp the Texas Film Initiative” and make Texas “the movie capital of the world” if passed.

    In 2023, the Texas legislature approved $200 million in funding for the state’s film incentive program, allocated within their budget for the next two years. Now, these actors suggest that increased funding could create jobs and boost local economies.

  • Former Bears coach Matt Eberflus returns to Cowboys as defensive coordinator – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth


    The Cowboys hired former Chicago Bears coach Matt Eberflus as defensive coordinator Tuesday for his second stint on the Dallas staff.

    Eberflus returned to the Cowboys two months after the Bears fired him 12 games into his third season, just a day after he botched a timeout against Detroit late in a sixth consecutive loss.

    Eberflus was 14-32 with Chicago.

    The Bears hired Eberflus after his four-year stint as defensive coordinator in Indianapolis. He had spent the previous seven seasons as a linebackers coach with the Cowboys, who eventually added passing game coordinator duties.
    Eberflus is joining the staff of coach Brian Schottenheimer, who was hired last week to replace Mike McCarthy.

    Schottenheimer is planning to call the offensive plays.

    The 54-year-old Eberflus spent 17 years as a college assistant before joining the Cleveland Browns as a linebackers coach in 2009.

    “This is the most important holiday in China,” says Yifeng Ren. Ren, 67, was born in China and recently moved to Plano. “No matter which place you work, you have to come back to your hometown to be with your parents [and] family members to celebrate.”

    Lunar New Year is celebrated in China and in other Asian countries including Mongolia, Vietnam, and North and South Korea. In one of the world’s largest annual migrations, millions of observers travel to be with family for the holiday. Reuters reported that a record 9 billion trips are expected in China this year during the travel season around the festival.

    A photo opportunity at the plaza will be up for several weeks, Hawkins says. Angel Touch Kitchen will serve halal Indonesian food.

    “Going to different cultural events is just always exciting to me to see how other people celebrate and [to] celebrate with other communities,” Hawkins says. “It’s just so eye-opening, because I think that some of our traditions here get watered down. To see such strong traditional ties is always fun.”

    This is the city’s first Lunar New Year festival, Hawkins says. The event was planned for last year, too, but was rained out.

  • Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo “All-Western” Parade Saturday – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth


    The All-Western Parade steps off Saturday morning to officially open the 2025 Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo.

    Thousands of spectators line the streets of downtown Cowtown to watch this spectacular yearly event. More than 3,000 horses will prance along a two-mile route up Main Street and then down Houston Street.

    Among its nearly 150 entries are more than 70 riding clubs from across the country, including the Hawaii Pa’u Riders; a dozen marching bands that include several local high schools, the TCU Horned Frog Marching Band, and more than 30 wagons and floats. No motorized vehicles are allowed.

    A special guest of the parade will be 2024 Olympic bronze medalist Austen Smith of Keller, the youngest member of the U.S. Olympic Shooting Team who competed in women’s skeet shooting in the Paris Summer Games.

    Leading it will be two members of the legendary Rafter G Rodeo Company based in Terrell.

    Megan Gay Maier and Summer Gay are the next generation in a family that’s been connected to the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo since since 1979.

    The women are proud to be cowgirls and granddaughters of the iconic Kay Gay who once said, “If you’re gonna ride a horse, you might as well be glamorous and flashy.”

    To Stock Show fans, she’s likely best known for the design and creation of the dozens of glamourous “outfits” worn by the Grand Entry’s 12 pivot setters and two riders who lead the procession carrying the American and Texas flags.

    Summer and Megan carry on that tradition today and will be at every rodeo performance at Dickies Arena.

    But Saturday’s parade comes first.

    The two-mile parade will begin on Main Street and Weatherford Street south of the Tarrant County Courthouse, will continue south to the Convention Center, turn right at 9th Street and right on Houston Street, and continue north on Houston Street. Street closures will begin at 9 a.m.

    The Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo runs from January 17 through February 8.

    The 2024-25 bowl season has already been a record-setting one for multi-overtime games.

    Three bowl games have required at least two overtime periods to decide a winner so far — the most in any season since OT was introduced to college football in 1996, according to ESPN.

    The first overtime game of the bowl season was in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Monday, when Northern Illinois defeated Fresno State 28-20 in double OT. Then, on Tuesday, South Florida and San Jose State played to a bowl-record five overtimes in the Hawai’i Bowl, with the Bulls beating the Spartans 41-39.

    But that record didn’t last for long, as Toledo outlasted Pitt 48-46 in six overtimes on Thursday to win the GameAbove Sports Bowl. That now stands as the most overtimes ever played in a bowl game.

    So, how exactly does overtime work in college football? Here’s what to know:

    Who gets the ball first in college football overtime?

    Possession to start overtime is determined just like it is in regulation — a coin toss where the visiting team calls heads or tails. The team that wins the coin toss gets to pick whether to start overtime on offense or defense, or it can choose the end of the field it wants to defend first.

    How does overtime work in college football?

    Overtime play doesn’t exactly look the same as regulation play. There aren’t any kickoffs and only the play clock — and not the game clock — is utilized.

    For the first overtime, each team gets one possession starting with a first-and-10 at the opposing 25-yard line. The team with the most points at the end of the period wins the game.

    For example, if the team who possesses the ball first settles for a field goal, the other team can extend the game with a field goal or win it on a touchdown (not scoring at all would result in a loss for that team).

    What are the rules for the 2nd overtime in college football?

    Should the game remain tied after one overtime, the rules change slightly. If a team scores a touchdown in the second overtime, it must attempt a 2-point conversion.

    Field goal attempts are still allowed in the second OT, but extra point tries aren’t.

    What are the rules for the 3rd overtime in college football?

    A game essentially turns into a 2-point conversion competition if it reaches triple overtime.

    Starting in the third overtime, each team gets to attempt one two-point try. This format continues for any subsequent OT periods until a winner is decided.

    It’s a sold-out game for Friday’s Armed Forces Bowl at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth. Ahead of the showdown, fans are spending a little time enjoying the festive scene at the Stockyards.

    It is the place to be in Fort Worth less than 24 hours ahead of kickoff. The Stockyards are known for having plenty to do and see during the holidays. This year, it only made sense for University of Oklahoma and Navy fans to get in on the festivities as well.

    OU student and Texas native Kevin Daniel came out with his dad Jeff for a little pre-Bowl game excitement.

    “Just to know something that’s really local for me so I don’t have to travel all the way to Birmingham, Alabama or Tampa, Florida. This is an hour drive from my house, and I get to see my team play,” said Daniel.

    He said it was the perfect time to experience something for the first time.

    “This is my first time ever going to the Stockyards, period. So just to kind of look around and see, even if you do some window shopping, just to see everything that’s going on here it’s definitely something I’d come back to,” he said.

    The Fort Worth Stockyards bring in more than $134 million annually with retail and restaurants. An end-of-year Armed Forces Bowl in the city is certain to bring an additional boost, with Sooner fans rubbing shoulders with Navy fans.

    “My daughter and her boyfriend are midshipmen so yeah, we’re going to the game,” said Todd McWhorter.

    McWhorter said it only makes sense for his family to root for the Navy.

    “Oh, we’re Texas fans too, so we hate OU. So, we’re looking forward to them beating OU,” he said.

    And he said one of the best ways to bond, other than the game of course, is to spend time here.

    “Her boyfriend is from out of town and so we like to bring him down here and show him around and it’s just a great opportunity,” he said.

    The Armed Forces Bowl kicks off Friday at 11 a.m. Central Time.

    Severe weather threat across North Texas for Thursday – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth


    Another round of rain and storms arrived along a dryline today across North Texas, bringing flash flooding and there is a potential for some of the storms to turn severe.

    A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for Henderson, Hopkins, Kaufman, Navarro, Rains and Van Zandt Counties until 7 p.m. The concern is hail up to ping pong size, wind gusts up to 70 mph and a couple of tornadoes are possible.

    The National Weather Service has issued Flash Flood Warnings for 9 North Texas counties including Dallas, Tarrant, Collin and Denton Counties.

    The prime time for strong storms in DFW is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

    DFW is under a Marginal (Level 1) risk for severe storms. That threat increases to Slight (Level 2) for areas east and southeast of Dallas.

    The primary threats are lightning, heavy rain, wind gusts to 60 mph, and hail up to the size of quarters. Tornadoes can’t be completely ruled out in east Texas, but the threat is low.

    The severe weather threat should end by late afternoon for most of the area as a cold front swings into the area. But some wrap-around showers are possible into the early evening.
