Severance season 2 is almost upon us, but it seems the success of the first season had some unexpected consequences for its creator.
Speaking in the new issue of SFX magazine, which features Star Trek spin-off movie Section 31 on the cover and hits newsstands on December 31, Dan Erickson opens up about the show’s impact.
“I was in therapy because of all the wonderful feelings I was getting from people responding to the show, and the surprise of it,” he says of the reception. “I really thought it would be a much more niche audience. Then you’re like, ‘How do I avoid letting these people down that have suddenly invested a little piece of themselves in this show?’ Knowing that we’re going to come back and shoot this again, I don’t want to make people come back and spend months and months shooting something that’s not up to the quality of the first season. So it was really intense.”
This is part of the reason it took so long to make the second season of one of Apple TV Plus’ best shows. Season one aired back in 2022 and season 2 is only released in early 2025.
“It took a long time,” Erickson explains. “Then there came a point, a certain ways into production, where I finally started to feel, ‘I actually think this is better.’ I don’t think this is any more a matter of, like, can we make something acceptable? I think we’ve actually got something that’s even more exciting than what we had before.”
Severance season 2 sees all the major cast return as it picks up in the aftermath of the first season’s dramatic finale. Alongside Adam Scott, Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, and Patricia Arquette, there are some new arrivals too. Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie joins alongside Alia Shawkat.

The sudden death of an MMA prospect has rocked Israel Adesanya and several other UFC stars.
Hakaraia Wilson has died aged 26. The Kiwi fighter was in Gisborne, New Zealand to attend a three-day music festival called Rhythm and Vines.
Police found his body when they were called to attend to a sudden death, with a spokesperson saying, “The death is not suspicious and has been referred to the coroner.”
Now the MMA community is mourning the shocking loss of a potential star just days after boxing fans were stunned by the sudden death of Paul Bamba.
UFC stars pay tribute to Hakaraia Wilson
Wilson started his MMA career in 2020. The welterweight fighter won six times and lost just once during his amateur run, which came to an end in 2023.
As a professional, he boasted a record of four wins and three losses. Wilson’s final MMA fight saw him beat Mark Alcoba by technical knockout in Bali last October.
Israel Adesanya paid tribute by posting a video of Wilson on his Instagram story.
Dan Hooker wrote: ‘Fly high brother before sharing the same clip as Adesanya, which included the caption: ‘You’ll be missed my brother.
UFC Flyweight contender Kai Kara-France said: “Heartbreaking! Fly high my Maori. Too many of our young tane taken too soon.’”
UFC light heavyweight star Carlos Ulberg, who is currently preparing to face ex-champion Jan Blachowicz at UFC London in March, simply posted a photo of Wilson celebrating after one of his MMA wins.

Wilson told his MMA story in a 2020 interview with Te Ao Māori News. It began at a very early age with some guidance from his father, who was also a fighter and helped his son become skilled in Jiu-Jitsu, boxing, karate, and kickboxing.
“I started getting into fighting under the guidance of my dad,” Wilson said.
“He was a fighter back in the day and, as I was growing up, I’d go to his training and watch him.
“From then I knew what I wanted to do and so, without my dad I probably wouldn’t have chosen to do this sport.”
After his final MMA win, he posted a positive message about bouncing back from defeat in empathic fashion.
“Took an L in May, learned from it & turned da page,” Wilson wrote on Instagram.
“Been waiting a minute for a chance to wash dat taste out of my mouth n show how much I’ve grown. Shout out to my coaches n my people for havin my back thru it all. Forever in debt.
“I love this s*** & I’m here to stay.”

Arguably, there’s been no bigger bull in the artificial-intelligence (AI) rally than Wedbush’s Dan Ives.
Ives has been cheerleading the AI boom since shortly after the debut of ChatGPT. In February 2023, the analyst said an AI arms race was shaping up following the launch of the generational AI chatbot.
That statement has been borne out, as Nvidia has raced ahead among chip stocks, fending off recent challenges from AMD and Intel. In addition, cloud infrastructure companies such as Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Oracle are rapidly buying Nvidia components to serve the AI demands of their own customers.
Ives’ prediction that tech stocks would gain 20% in 2023 was also accurate, as the tech-heavy Nasdaq index finished up 24%. He also called 2024 the “year of AI,” saying that tech stocks would jump 25%. That was also correct.
Now, Ives is banging the drum for tech stocks to continue to rise in 2025, driven by the AI boom. In a recent post on X, Ives predicted that stocks would jump 25% in 2025, building on its gains over the past two years.

Ives has argued before that the AI boom will take the form of a multiyear rally in the stock market, much like the dot-com boom of the 1990s, which lasted for five years before ending in a crash.
Despite some concerns that an AI bubble may be forming, signs are generally pointing to a continued rally in AI stocks. First, revenue and profit are likely to continue to soar as stocks like Nvidia are still reporting rapid growth, and other stocks are joining the AI rally, including Micron and now a number of software companies.
There are also larger macro trends that could drive tech stocks higher. In particular, Ives noted a benefit from Lina Khan’s stepping down as head of the Federal Trade Commission. Khan has led several high-profile lawsuits against big tech companies, and the regulatory framework is expected to be friendlier to big business under President Trump.
In addition, investors seem to be anticipating support from the new administration for AI initiatives, as tech stocks jumped following the election. Meanwhile, the race to artificial generative intelligence is well under way, and as long as companies such as OpenAI are working toward achieving that goal, spending on cybersecurity is likely to remain strong.
Tech stocks are coming into 2025 with a lot of momentum, but the biggest risk factor at this point is the valuation. The Nasdaq is up more than 50% over the past two years, and it’s now about as expensive as it’s been at any point since the dot-com bubble.
The Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ: QQQ), which tracks the Nasdaq 100, or the 100 most valuable Nasdaq stocks, now trades at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 35, and many of the “Magnificent Seven” stocks that make up much of the value of the Nasdaq seem inflated. Apple, for example, now trades at a P/E of 41, and its market cap is approaching $4 trillion, even as revenue is expected to grow by only mid-single digits this year.
Ives’ bullishness isn’t unreasonable, as spending on capital infrastructure to support AI is likely to increase. But with valuations already looking stretched, achieving another 25% increase for the Nasdaq won’t be so easy.
Rather than piling into tech stocks on autopilot, a better strategy would be tactfully investing in this industry. Either wait for pullbacks in specific stocks after doing due diligence in the underlying business, or buy ETFs such as the Invesco QQQ Trust to help diversify risk, or use a combination of both.
With stocks now trading at lofty valuations and a new administration likely to introduce more uncertainty into the stock market, 2025 is likely to be a volatile year for investors. But they’ll probably have opportunities to capitalize on sell-offs, much as we saw after the Federal Reserve scaled back its forecast for rate cuts.
Keeping some dry powder on hand for such movements will almost always pay off, as the AI boom still has the ability to carry the tech sector higher over the next few years. But there should be plenty of pullbacks as the market wrestles with higher prices for the biggest tech stocks.

Santa Clara, Calif. — Offensive tackle Penei Sewell struck fear into the hearts of Detroit Lions fans everywhere when he left the field before time ran out in the first half of Monday night’s game against the 49ers.
After the game, Lions coach Dan Campbell said Sewell had a thumb injury, but it was nothing to be concerned about in the long term. Sewell, who was Second-Team All-Pro in 2023, is the catalyst for a Lions offensive line that many consider the best in the league. He returned for the third quarter and helped jump-start a strong second-half performance in a 40-34 win at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.
Sewell is one of the most durable players on the team. He’s missed just one game in his NFL career, which came in his rookie season after he tested positive for Covid.
“He should be good,” Campbell said after the game.
Lions kicker Jake Bates said he was “just a little tight” after being spotted stretching on the sideline, an image that has since become a viral sensation. The Lions could desperately use Anzalone’s presence after the team’s linebackers had a rough performance in Monday’s win over the 49ers. Anzalone suffered a broken forearm in the team’s win over Jacksonville on Nov. 17, one of many long-term hits to Detroit’s front seven this season.

I know it’s hard to zoom out when you’re so hyperfocused on the task at hand tomorrow, but I just wonder, if you could, think about all the people who have been instrumental in getting you at the stage you’re at today. Is there someone you’d like to give a shout out to that you wouldn’t be sitting here without?
DAN LANNING: How much time have we got? I mean, I’ll start with my wife, Sauphia. I think anybody who is a coach in this profession realizes there really isn’t balance, I’ve said it before, there isn’t balance if you want to be great. You need great support structure around you. There’s a lot of people that believed in me and gave me opportunities. I think there’s unbelievable coaches across the country that certainly deserve and would do a fantastic job in this role that I get to sit in.
I don’t take that for granted. I’m very blessed. But as blessed as anything to have the wife I have at home taking care of those three boys I think they got to enjoy Disneyland yesterday. I think she really enjoyed it right around 8:30 a.m., but I think maybe at 8:00 p.m. at night she was ready to get back home. Even though we had a long day of work here, I know she was working her tail off there yesterday.
RYAN DAY: Same with me. It’s about family. When you talk about family, first off, it’s Nina and the kids. I’ve known Nina my whole life. She’s been with me since we were 6 years old. We’ve been through a lot together. And when it comes to great moments in life, you’ve got to hug the people you love the most and enjoy them.
When you go through difficult times, you hang on the best you can to the ones you love and you just keep pushing forward, keep moving forward. So that’s really the foundation, I think, of any coach. I’m very fortunate to have a family who is just very, very supportive. But it quickly goes to the players. These are the guys who are on the field. I think sometimes in football, the coaches get a lot of the attention. But ultimately this game is played by the players. And we have a great coaching staff and great support system in the Woody that pulls for each other. And, again, as much as the focus sometimes comes on the coach it’s about our players and our coaches in that building and the work that they put in.
And ultimately it’s about the team. There’s a lot of things along the way give us an opportunity to get to where we are, coaches, people in our lives but ultimately it comes down to family. Your family that’s close to you in your house and also your football family

The Detroit Lions decided that revenge and momentum were more important than rest in Week 17. ESPN analyst Troy Aikman questioned if that was the right move Monday night for a Lions squad that still has everything to play for.
When the Minnesota Vikings beat the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, the Lions lost any opportunity to lock up the NFC North, the 1-seed and a first-round bye before they play the Vikings in Week 18.
That means despite a 13-2 start to the season, nothing is guaranteed for the Lions, outside of at least a spot in the playoffs.
It also meant that the Lions’ game against the 6-9 San Francisco 49ers was rendered meaningless, because no matter what, it would all come down to Week 18.
But Aikman wasn’t so sure that was the right call.
Aikman discussed how the Lions had their bye week all the way back in Week 5 and went as far as calling the Lions “a tired football team.“
The former Dallas Cowboys star quarterback and longtime broadcaster continued to bring up the issue throughout the first half, including after a big hit on tight end Sam LaPorta, and on other plays said Campbell would be happy to just get out with any major injuries.
Only time will tell if Aikman was right.

Minnesota was the first of the two teams to play this weekend, surging to an early lead against another divisional rival in Green Bay and carrying a 27-10 edge into the midway point of the fourth quarter. Jordan Love promptly led the Packers on consecutive touchdown drives, narrowing the deficit to 27-25 by the two-minute warning, but Minnesota ultimately held on and improved to 14-2 on the season, also eliminating Philadelphia from contention for the No. 1 overall seed.
Detroit, meanwhile, will face off against San Francisco on Monday night. However, because the Lions beat Minnesota earlier in the season, they will win the NFC North with a victory over Minnesota almost regardless of their result in Monday’s game — beating San Francisco would allow Detroit to advance in the case of a tie against the Vikings.
Campbell and company will kick off in San Francisco at 8:15 p.m. ET Monday night before heading home to face the Vikings on short rest. The Week 18 matchup between Detroit and Minnesota will broadcast on NBC at 8:15 p.m. ET Sunday.
