Jack Fincham of Love Island freed from jail in dangerous dog case

Jack Fincham won the ITV reality contest Love Island in 2018 with former partner Dani Dyer Former Love Island winner Jack Fincham has been released from prison within hours of being sentenced for dangerous dog offences.
The 32-year-old’s black cane corso bit a runner in September 2022 in Swanley, Kent, and attacked a woman in Grays, Essex, last year.
Fincham, of Swanley, pleaded guilty to two counts of being in charge of a dangerously out of control dog and was sentenced to six weeks in prison at Southend Magistrates’ Court.
But the court admin office told the BBC he had been released on the same day, because he had appealed his sentence.
Fincham worked as a pen salesman, but won the popular ITV dating show in 2018 after coupling up with Dani Dyer.
The pair split up nine months later.
Instagram
Jack Fincham initially accepted a caution for the incident in September 2022, but was prosecuted following the second incident two years later Prosecutor Erin Peck said the runner, Robert Sudell, initially accepted an apology over the incident and Fincham was going to be cautioned and would engage in a responsible dog ownership course. He was told at the time that his dog – named Elvis – must be muzzled.
But he was instead prosecuted after the second incident in Grays in June last year.
Essex Police said a woman in her 40s reported that the dog grabbed her leg in Culford Road. She was uninjured.
On Wednesday, Fincham was ordered to pay £3,680 in total, including a £2,000 contribution to kennelling costs, a fine of £961 and £200 compensation to Mr Sudell.
Richard Cooper, for Fincham, said his client had “no savings”.
But presiding magistrate Anne Wade said he could pay in instalments starting at £400 per month.
She made an order that the dog must be muzzled in public places, be kept on a lead and not be left alone with anyone under the age of 16.
Fincham was subject to a suspended sentence for an unrelated driving matter at the time of the incident in Swanley – and Ms Wade said this order was being taken into account in her sentencing.
“The dog was in a public place not abiding by the conditions to be muzzled and kept on a lead,” added Ms Wade.
Sgt Alex Watkins of Essex Police said Fincham was given the chance to rectify his behaviour on both occasions but “failed to do so”.
“I thank both victims for their courage during this investigation,” he said.
Immediate release
Fincham gave a thumbs up as he was led to the cells after being sentenced, and a woman wept from the public gallery.
However, he was released after his defence team lodged the appeal.
He was told he must report to Grays police station every Friday and would need to appear at Basildon Crown Court for a bail application hearing.
It is rare for a defendant to be bailed pending an appeal on the same day they have been sentenced, the BBC understands.
Jack Fincham, former Love Island contestant, has been released from jail after being involved in a dangerous dog case. The reality TV star was arrested last month after his dog attacked a passerby, causing serious injuries.Fincham was sentenced to six months in jail, but has been released early for good behavior. The incident has sparked outrage among animal rights activists, who are calling for stricter laws to prevent such attacks from happening in the future.
The Love Island star has since apologized for the incident, stating that he takes full responsibility for his dog’s actions. He has also pledged to undergo training to ensure that his pet is properly trained and socialized in the future.
While some fans have expressed their support for Fincham, others are calling for him to be banned from owning animals altogether. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the potential consequences of failing to properly train and control aggressive animals.

Cities and towns from the Great Lakes region to parts of the Northeast are bracing for more snow and strong winds as the next in a series of fast-moving clipper systems threatens the region.
The strongest clipper in the ongoing parade charges in on Monday night, bringing the potential for dangerous snow squalls with whiteout conditions and strong wind gusts up to 60 mph.
Nearly 28 million people are under High Wind Warnings or Wind Advisories from Chicago and Milwaukee eastward through portions of Michigan, Pennsylvania and upstate New York.

Snow and strong winds rolled into the region Monday afternoon.
The National Weather Service in Buffalo warned of near whiteout conditions through Monday night.
The strong winds will move inland off the Great Lakes, creating a risk of downed trees and scattered power outages.
These winds are forecast to impact portions of Interstate 90 in western New York and Interstate 81 in north-central New York.

Snow squalls possible Monday night into Wednesday for the Great Lakes, mid-Atlantic and Northeast
By early Tuesday morning, the FOX Forecast Center is monitoring the potential for strong snow squalls along the I-90 corridor.
Snow squalls are possible from the eastern Great Lakes to New England, including parts of the northern mid-Atlantic states, according to a post from the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center. The majority of New York state’s Southern Tier and northern Pennsylvania were highlighted by the NWS as particularly at risk for snow squalls on Tuesday morning.
The NWS is warning of additional snow squalls Tuesday night through Wednesday in a similar region with the greatest threat for northeastern Ohio and northwestern Pennsylvania.
Erie, Pennsylvania, has already received more than 92 inches of snow this winter, and more is possible during this new round of snowy weather.
The limiting factor for the snow will be the speed at which the clipper system moves through the area. If it moves too quickly, it will limit the snowfall intensity. However, if the squalls are able to tap into more storm energy, it could lead to heavier snow and dangerous whiteout conditions.
SAFETY TIPS FOR DRIVING THROUGH WINTER WEATHER
Snowfall forecast through Thursday.
(FOX Weather)
Snow will continue to move south and east throughout Tuesday, with snow showers tapering off later in the afternoon.
Buffalo and Watertown in New York are once again in the bull’s-eye for locally heavy snow. Through Sunday, Buffalo had seen 48.7 inches of snow so far this winter.
After this system, another clipper will move through the region by midweek. This time, the low-pressure system will track through the Upper Midwest and then toward New England, which could bring light-to-moderate snow showers to areas like Boston and New York City.
While snow amounts will not be heavy, the system could cause minor travel disruptions.
If the low stays farther north, upper portions of Michigan and western and upstate New York could once again see snow and high winds.
A powerful clipper system is set to sweep across the Northeast, bringing with it dangerous snow squalls and high winds. The storm is expected to bring heavy snowfall and blizzard-like conditions, making travel treacherous and potentially causing power outages.Residents in the affected areas are urged to take caution and prepare for the storm by stocking up on supplies, securing loose items outside, and staying off the roads if possible. The combination of heavy snow and strong winds could lead to whiteout conditions and reduced visibility, making driving extremely hazardous.
Authorities are urging everyone to stay informed and heed any advisories or warnings from local officials. It is important to take this storm seriously and take the necessary precautions to stay safe. Stay tuned for updates on the storm’s progress and be prepared for the worst as this powerful clipper system moves through the region.

Elon Musk’s call for Germany to ‘move beyond’ Nazi guilt is dangerous, Holocaust memorial chair says
The chairman of Israel’s official Holocaust memorial has accused Elon Musk of insulting the victims of Nazism and endangering Germany’s democratic future after the billionaire addressed a rally for Germany’s far-right party on Saturday.
Musk, the world’s richest man, made a surprise virtual appearance at a campaign event for Germany’s far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party on Saturday, doubling down on his support for the group he has said can “save Germany” ahead of snap elections in February.
In an apparent reference to Germany’s Nazi history, the head of the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency, whose smiling face was projected onto a vast screen, told a roaring crowd that “children should not be guilty of the sins of their parents, let alone their great-grandparents.”
“There is too much focus on past guilt, and we need to move beyond that,” he added at the rally in the eastern German city of Halle.
Musk’s remarks, which came the same week that he faced criticism for a gesture during a speech in Washington that many people said resembled a Nazi salute, came two days before world leaders are due to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
“The remembrance and acknowledgement of the dark past of the country and its people should be central in shaping the German society,” said Dani Dayan, chairman of Yad Vashem, Israel’s memorial to the victims of the Holocaust, in a post on X.
“Failing to do so is an insult to the victims of Nazism and a clear danger to the democratic future of Germany,” he added.
Musk has openly supported numerous hard-right causes in Europe, including the anti-immigrant AfD, which last year became the first far-right party to win a state election in Germany since World War II.
Moving past guilt over the atrocities of Germany’s Nazi era is a key pillar of the AfD’s platform.
In echoing the party’s attitude to Germany’s past — a point of view that has drawn outrage inside Germany and abroad — the tech billionaire threw his support behind a party whose co-founder Alexander Gauland once dismissed the Nazi era as “just a speck of bird’s muck in more than 1,000 years of successful German history.”
The AfD denies being extremist, although its leaders have said that Germany should stop apologizing for the Holocaust and the Third Reich.
Musk greets Donald Trump at the launch of the SpaceX Starship rocket in Texas in November.Brandon Bell / Getty Images The timing of Musk’s appearance at the AfD rally was also notable in that it came just days after he made a gesture in Washington that sparked widespread condemnation.
Abraham Foxman, the former director of the Anti-Defamation League, said on X that Musk’s appearance in and comments at the rally, just days after his speech in Washington, “help place the hand gesture in perspective.”
Foxman’s comments on Musk’s actions came in contrast to those of the ADL’s current leadership.
The ADL defended Musk after the gesture, suggesting on X — the social media platform that Musk owns — that the billionaire had made an “awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute.”
“In this moment, all sides should give one another a bit of grace, perhaps even the benefit of the doubt, and take a breath,” it said.
In his own attempt to downplay the allegations, Musk posted a joke referencing names of prominent Nazi leaders on X, also sparking a backlash.
The ADL’s chief executive, Jonathan Greenblatt, responded on the same platform saying that “the Holocaust is not a joke.”
Musk’s comments at the AfD’s rally also played into familiar AfD talking points on national identity and immigration.
Alice Weidel, co-leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany party, in Berlin before a live discussion with Elon Musk on X on Jan. 9.Kay Nietfeld / AFP – Getty Images “It’s good to be proud of German culture, German values, and not to lose that in some sort of multiculturalism that dilutes everything,” Musk said.
The AfD has successfully used Germany’s debate over immigration to bolster its popularity. The party adopted an explicitly anti-Islam policy in May 2016, and its 2017 election manifesto included a section on why “Islam does not belong to Germany.”
The topic of immigration was one of many Musk discussed during an X broadcast earlier this month in which he spent more than an hour speaking with AfD co-leader Alice Weidel.
As he has become increasingly vocal about his apparent move to the right of the political spectrum, Musk has thrown his support behind numerous right-wing causes, including the United Kingdom’s hard-right Reform UK party and Italy’s far-right Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, calling her a “precious genius.”
But his most zealous support has been for the AfD, which heads into February’s elections polling in second place after the collapse of Germany’s left-led coalition government.
While other German political parties have refused to join coalitions with the AfD due to its extreme positions, Musk has given the group a significant boost, most notably — before Saturday at least — with his X interview with Weidel.
In the conversation, Weidel said that AfD is “exactly the opposite” of Adolf Hitler’s party, adding that it’s Europe’s left-wing political parties who are antisemitic.
“We are wrongly framed the entire time,” she said.
Elon Musk’s recent comments calling for Germany to “move beyond” its guilt over the Holocaust have sparked outrage and condemnation from Holocaust memorial chairpersons and historians. In a series of tweets, the Tesla CEO and SpaceX founder suggested that Germany should not dwell on its past atrocities and instead focus on building a better future. These remarks have been met with fierce criticism, with many arguing that they trivialize the horrors of the Holocaust and demonstrate a lack of understanding of the importance of remembering and acknowledging the past. Dr. Charlotte Knobloch, the chair of the Munich Jewish community and former president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, called Musk’s comments “dangerous and deeply troubling.”
Knobloch emphasized the need for Germany to continue to confront its history and ensure that the memory of the Holocaust is preserved for future generations. She warned against attempts to downplay or dismiss the atrocities of the past, stating that doing so could pave the way for history to repeat itself.
Musk’s remarks have also been criticized for their insensitivity and lack of empathy towards the millions of victims of the Holocaust. Many have pointed out that Germany’s commitment to remembering and learning from its past is crucial in preventing similar atrocities from happening in the future.
In light of the backlash, Musk has since clarified his comments, stating that he was not trying to minimize the significance of the Holocaust but rather advocating for a focus on progress and innovation. However, his initial remarks continue to be seen as problematic and divisive.
Overall, Musk’s call for Germany to “move beyond” its Nazi guilt has ignited a heated debate about the importance of remembering and learning from history, and the dangers of forgetting the past. It serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing need to confront the atrocities of the past and ensure that they are never repeated.

The NFC landscape is shifting as Lions rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold expresses confidence in becoming the top cornerback in the league following a promising first year. Despite a disappointing playoff exit, Lions owner Sheila Ford Hamp reassures fans of their determination to pursue a Super Bowl title. Meanwhile, Packers‘ Javon Bullard boasts about building a formidable defense, backed by praise for defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley’s contributions in his first year with the team.
By the Numbers
- Lions finished the season with a record-setting performance but fell short in the playoffs (45-31 loss to Commanders).
- Packers’ defense is aiming for significant improvement in 2025, with strong buy-in from rookies and veterans alike.
State of Play
- Lions reflect on a season of success despite playoff disappointment.
- Packers show confidence in their revamped defense under Jeff Hafley, who garnered commendations for his coaching efforts.
What’s Next
As both teams look ahead, the Lions aim to refine their roster for a stronger playoff push next year, while the Packers will continue building their defense to enhance competitiveness in the 2025 season.
Bottom Line
The Lions and Packers are setting ambitious goals, with the Lions focused on overcoming past playoff failures and the Packers looking to solidify their defense to pose a greater threat in upcoming seasons. Both teams show promising foundations for future success.
The NFC is shaping up to be a highly competitive conference this season, with the Detroit Lions eyeing a potential Super Bowl run and the Green Bay Packers building a dangerous defense. The Lions have been on a hot streak lately, winning five of their last six games and holding the top spot in the NFC North. Led by quarterback Matthew Stafford and a dynamic offense, the Lions have shown they have what it takes to make a deep playoff run. With playmakers like wide receiver Kenny Golladay and running back D’Andre Swift, the Lions have the firepower to go toe-to-toe with any team in the league.
On the other hand, the Packers have been quietly building a formidable defense under new defensive coordinator Joe Barry. With playmakers like cornerback Jaire Alexander and linebacker De’Vondre Campbell leading the way, the Packers have improved dramatically on the defensive side of the ball. This newfound defensive prowess, combined with the stellar play of quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver Davante Adams, makes the Packers a force to be reckoned with in the NFC.
As the season progresses, it will be exciting to see how these two teams continue to develop and compete in the highly competitive NFC. Could we see a Lions-Packers showdown in the NFC Championship game? Only time will tell.

Packers’ defense plans to be ‘dangerous’ next season
GREEN BAY – Optimism is common this time of year, as teams put a wrap on the previous season and start looking forward.
But sometimes it can be difficult to distinguish what’s just talk from a genuinely positive outlook.
Make no mistake, the optimism surrounding Year 2 of Jeff Hafley’s defense in Green Bay is very real, and it stems from not just the Packers’ improvement in one season, but also the youth that established itself in 2024.
“I’m not going to lie: We’re going to be dangerous,” rookie safety Javon Bullard said as he cleaned out his locker last week. “We’re going to be dangerous. And I’m not just saying that. We’re going to be a special group.
“Our class, the vets that we still have, I have a tremendous amount of faith in us and what we’re going to bring to the table.”
Personnel-wise, a trio of draft picks in Bullard, fellow safety Evan Williams and linebacker Edgerrin Cooper developed into regulars and impact players, with Cooper’s contributions (13 tackles for loss, 3½ sacks, four passes defensed, one INT) earning the most recognition. The second-round pick out of Texas A&M was twice named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week, and he finished the regular season as the NFC Defensive Rookie of the Month.
They joined a unit anchored by veteran addition Xavier McKinney on the back end, and mainstays Kenny Clark, Rashan Gary and Quay Walker, among others, in the front seven. Keisean Nixon also took over as the team’s No. 1 cornerback in place of an injured Jaire Alexander, and the depth at other spots passed various tests due to injuries along the way.
Compared to Green Bay’s 2023 defense, Hafley’s unit improved from 28th to seventh in rushing yards allowed, 17th to fifth in total yards allowed, and 10th to sixth in points allowed, while nearly doubling its takeaways from 17 to 31.
The turnaround was nothing short of significant, particularly for a first-year defensive coordinator.
“I’m a big fan of just everything he came with and really just the culture he set foot, as soon as he stepped into the door,” Williams said of Hafley. “He made it clear off the rip that he wanted us to play free, play physical and just play fast. I feel like my play style really fits into that mold.
“So yeah, you had a lot of guys that just came in and bought in immediately. I think that showed.”
General Manager Brian Gutekunst even admitted what Hafley accomplished, both in terms of culture and results, exceeded his expectations because he figured Hafley might need more time to readjust to the NFL after coming from a four-year stint in the NCAA as Boston College’s head coach.
He also emphasized, as Head Coach Matt LaFleur did at season’s end, that the defense put on a winning performance at Philadelphia in the NFC Wild Card round.
“I thought Jeff Hafley did an amazing job coming in here in Year 1,” Gutekunst said. “Those guys really grew together, and they were a unit, and I thought we were playing our best football on defense at the end of the year.
“The strides we took during the season really were really, really impressive. The jumps. And I’m excited to see what he can do Year 2.”
One caveat: The Packers are hoping Hafley doesn’t get stolen away, as he’s one of at least 15 candidates who has interviewed for the Jets’ head coaching job.
Another: The unit did have deficiencies that must be addressed.
The pass rush was hit or miss and particularly struggled against the NFC’s top teams (Eagles, Lions, Vikings), none of whom the Packers beat in six tries.
Hafley got creative by simulating blitzes and trying to keep opposing offenses guessing as to who was rushing, without compromising the coverage numbers-wise, and all that scheming had its share of success.
But the ability to generate steady pressure from a traditional front four will be a focal point heading into next season, both in terms of personnel and coaching, with a change at defensive line coach in the works following Jason Rebrovich’s dismissal.
“I can say this: I definitely do love the system we’re in,” said defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt, whom Gutekunst called the defense’s most consistent interior rusher. He had five sacks despite missing three games this season and playing less than full strength in others. “For sure it fits us a lot.
“How do I feel about it? … I mean, it’s going to be wicked next year.”
Discipline penalties, both pre- and post-snap, were an issue that never seemed to get solved as well. Other questions include Alexander’s uncertain future and several pending free agents on whom contract decisions must be made.
Run-stuffer T.J. Slaton is the most prominent name on that list, followed by linebackers Isaiah McDuffie and Eric Wilson, cornerback Eric Stokes and other depth pieces in the secondary like Zayne Anderson, Corey Ballentine and Robert Rochell.
But however it shakes out, the bulk of the defense’s core will remain intact, while 2024 draft picks Ty’Ron Hopper at linebacker and Kitan Oladapo at safety are waiting in the wings.
“I think the future’s bright,” Nixon said. “We had 31 turnovers … that was just a start. That’s off of just buying into what the coaches were bringing in.”
Oh, they bought in alright. Now it’s onward and upward.
“When all our pieces are executing, we could just take over games,” Williams said. “I’m definitely going to keep that picture in my mind.
“Hopefully we’ll have most of the same pieces and if we can execute our game plan … we can be real dangerous.”
The Green Bay Packers’ defense is gearing up to be a force to be reckoned with next season. After a solid showing in 2021, the team is looking to take their game to the next level and become a dominant force in the league.Defensive coordinator Joe Barry recently spoke about the team’s plans for the upcoming season, stating that they aim to be “dangerous” on the field. With a talented roster and a renewed focus on fundamentals and technique, the Packers’ defense is poised to make a statement in the NFL.
Key players like Jaire Alexander, Kenny Clark, and Za’Darius Smith are expected to lead the charge, while young stars like Rashan Gary and Eric Stokes are ready to step up and make an impact. The team is also looking to add depth and talent through the draft and free agency, further bolstering their defensive prowess.
Packers fans can expect an aggressive, hard-hitting defense that will keep opposing offenses on their toes. With a renewed sense of urgency and a hunger for success, the Packers’ defense is ready to take the league by storm next season. Get ready, NFL – the Packers are coming for you. #GoPackGo #PackersDefense #NFL

Cavaliers Warned to Avoid Dangerous NBA Trade Deadline Move
The Cleveland Cavaliers still have a couple of weeks to make a move or two before the NBA trade deadline, and it’s looking more and more like they may not do very much.
And why would they?
The Cavaliers have been thoroughly dominant throughout most of the season and are on track to land the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference.
But could Cleveland do something to aggravate its fan base before Feb. 6?
Josh Cornelissen of King James Gospel feels it’s a possibility, noting that the Cavs may ultimately trade Caris LeVert in order to recoup some assets for him now before he hits free agency.
While Cornelissen understands the logic behind moving a bench player you probably aren’t going to re-sign, he also states that it would harm the Cavaliers’ chances of winning a championship.
“The problem with that plan, of course, is that Caris LeVert is a crucial member of the rotation, a Sixth Man of the Year candidate shooting the leather off the basketball and playing solid defense,” Cornelissen wrote. ” … Trading LeVert (or Max Strus, or Dean Wade) means moving on from a crucial rotation player, someone who has contributed meaningfully to the team’s historic start, all in the name of saving a bit of money for billionaire owner Dan Gilbert.”
The unfortunate reality is that Cleveland may actually be considering taking this route.
“With just over two weeks remaining until the NBA Trade Deadline we will soon have our answer,” Cornelissen continued. “Rumors are percolating, however, that Koby Altman may be told he has to find a trade to make this team worse. That would be a painful pill to swallow.”
LeVert is averaging 10.8 points per game on 47.3/42.0/69.9 splits this season. He is now in his third year with the Cavs.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are on the brink of making a dangerous move at the upcoming NBA trade deadline, according to league sources. With rumors swirling about potential trades involving key players, the team has been warned to proceed with caution.Trading away valuable assets could jeopardize the Cavaliers’ chances of making a playoff push this season. The team has shown promise in recent games and has the potential to be a strong contender in the Eastern Conference.
However, making a hasty decision at the trade deadline could set the team back and hinder their progress. It is crucial for the Cavaliers to carefully evaluate all trade offers and consider the long-term implications before making any moves.
Fans are on edge as the deadline approaches, hoping that the Cavaliers will make smart decisions that will benefit the team in the long run. Only time will tell if the team will heed the warnings and avoid a dangerous trade deadline move.

RED CROSS RESPONSE Eighty-eight-year-old Fay Austin was forced to evacuate as wildfires swept through her Altadena neighborhood, destroying her home. See her story here. Read more stories here.
This morning, more than 600 evacuees woke up in Red Cross shelters, where disaster health volunteers are caring for minor injuries and replacing things like eyeglasses and medications, and mental health workers are providing emotional support to those experiencing unimaginable loss. Caseworkers are helping shelter residents plan their next steps and connect them with other community resources. The top priority is housing, but people also need help with transportation, health care, childcare and other challenges.
The Red Cross is working closely with local officials, government agencies and other nonprofits to coordinate relief efforts and make recovery plans, including Disaster Recovery Centers in Los Angeles and Pasadena where people can access resources and aid from multiple organizations. Red Cross teams have also formed special task forces with government and community partners to support immediate and long-term needs such as feeding, veteran care and housing.
Communities are slowly reopening, and Red Crossers will be there with support and relief supplies to help as people return. As many as 730 Red Cross responders are working day and night to make sure people are not alone. Since the fires started over a week ago, the Red Cross has provided more than 10,000 overnight shelter stays and almost 90,000 meals and snacks with the help of partners.
GET HELP In addition to assisting those currently in our shelters, we are also providing financial assistance to residents who lived within the fire perimeters of Eaton, Palisades, Hurst, and Kenneth as defined by Cal OES. Harris County leaders warn of more dangerous weather after Houston’s historic snow
HOUSTON – Harris County is experiencing a rare bout of record-breaking snowfall, disrupting daily life across the region. County Judge Lina Hidalgo provided critical updates on current conditions and ongoing response efforts.
Despite hazardous weather conditions, Judge Hidalgo praised the community’s efforts to stay off the roads, which has helped prevent more serious accidents.
Ice and risk of accidents remain a concern
While the weather has calmed for now, Hidalgo cautioned that the worst is yet to come. “The ice is going to worsen as temperatures drop overnight,” she warned. Drivers are already encountering stalled vehicles, and the risk of accidents increases as conditions deteriorate.
Sheriff Ed Gonalez reported a total of 168 accidents since the wintery weather began. He is also encouraging people to stay off the roadways to avoid more accidents.
Frozen pipes and fire hazards
In addition to hazardous roads, Hidalgo warned residents about the potential for frozen pipes and fires caused by space heaters and chimneys. She described the weather to come as ‘pipe bursting potential.’
Warming centers open for relief
To support those in need, 23 warming centers have been opened across the county. “If you need a place to stay, please call 311 before 7 p.m. to arrange transportation,” she said.
Safety remains priority as conditions worsen
As temperatures dip below freezing again tonight, Hidalgo urged everyone to stay indoors. “It’s going to certainly get worse,” she cautioned.
Historic snowfall with a reminder to stay safe
While the snow offers a rare chance for enjoyment, Hidalgo reminded the public to remain cautious.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire is also scheduled to hold a press conference at 5 p.m.
Prepare now and stay safe
As we weather the winter storm, officials are reminding everyone to protect pets, plants, and pipes, and if you can, stay home.
How you can prepare
Residents are encouraged to take their own precautions while the county is stepping up its efforts. Here are some links that will help you prepare:

As Houston continues to dig out from its record-breaking snowfall, Harris County leaders are cautioning residents to remain vigilant as more dangerous weather may be on the horizon. With temperatures expected to drop again in the coming days, officials are warning that icy conditions could persist, creating hazardous driving and walking conditions. In addition, power outages may continue to be a problem as the demand for electricity remains high.
Residents are urged to stay off the roads if possible and to use caution when walking on sidewalks and driveways. It’s also important to check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors to ensure they are safe and warm.
As the city continues to recover from this unprecedented snowstorm, it’s crucial that we all remain prepared for whatever Mother Nature may have in store for us next. Stay safe, Houston!

Polar vortex brings dangerous cold temperatures to majority of US
A blast of Arctic air from Canada has brought the season’s coldest weather to most of the United States. The system, known as a polar vortex, is forecast to bring subzero temperatures to the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and deep into the South.
And it looks as we may get more arctic blasts in the coming years.
Outbreaks from the Arctic will persist throughout the Northern Hemisphere in the upcoming decades, even as the region is warming more quickly than the rest of the world, according to a study published in Environmental Research: Climate.
Strong wind gusts are expected from Montana to Nebraska this week, according to Accuweather. The freezing temperatures will move eastward, reaching major cities like Philadelphia, where daytime highs will reach only the upper teens.
How the stratosphere influences Earth’s surface climate
The polar vortex is a gigantic circular upper-air weather pattern in the Arctic that envelops the North Pole. It’s a normal pattern that is stronger in the winter and tends to keep the coldest weather bottled up near the North Pole.
The jet stream typically acts as a barrier to keep the polar vortex contained near the Arctic, but at times, some of the vortex can break off or move south, bringing unusually cold weather into the U.S., Europe and Asia.
The image below show how the influence of climate change from as far away as the mid-latitudes can trigger an outbreak of Arctic air over the United States weeks to months later.

The polar vortex and jet stream are both extending southward into the US
NOAA’s Global Forecasting System model predicted the Jan. 16 polar vortex would shift south of the tropospheric jet stream over North America, with the stretched polar vortex corresponding to the shift.

Where is the stratosphere?
Let’s examine the atmosphere’s structure. The troposphere, which extends up about 6 miles from the Earth’s surface, is the first layer of the atmosphere. The majority of our weather occurs here. The layer of the atmosphere that lies between 6 and 31 miles above the surface is known as the stratosphere. The polar vortex is within the stratosphere.
Because of the lack of sunlight, both the Earth’s poles have substantially cooler temperatures than the equator. This means the air at the poles gets extremely cold and dense, which causes a powerful jet stream to emerge in the stratosphere and blow the cold air from west to east. This strong circulation is known as a polar vortex.

The recent polar vortex has brought dangerously cold temperatures to the majority of the US, with many regions experiencing record-breaking lows. From the Midwest to the East Coast, millions of people are facing frigid conditions that pose a serious threat to their health and safety. As the polar vortex grips the nation, experts are urging residents to take precautions to protect themselves from the extreme cold. This includes staying indoors as much as possible, dressing in layers, and avoiding prolonged exposure to the elements. Homeless shelters are working overtime to provide warmth and shelter to those in need, while emergency responders are on high alert for cases of hypothermia and frostbite.
The polar vortex serves as a stark reminder of the power of nature and the importance of being prepared for extreme weather events. As we hunker down and weather the storm, let’s remember to check on our neighbors, especially the elderly and vulnerable, and lend a helping hand whenever possible.
Stay safe and stay warm, everyone. And remember, this too shall pass. #PolarVortex #ExtremeCold #StaySafe
