  • LDS Church calls Netflix series ‘dangerously misleading’

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is calling a recently released Netflix series “dangerously misleading,” claiming it mischaracterizes LDS prophet Brigham Young.

“American Primeval”, which started streaming on Netflix earlier this month, follows a group of LDS pioneers trying to survive the American frontier during the Utah War of 1857.

    More US and World News

The show depicts an event known as the “Mountain Meadows Massacre where local Latter-day Saint militiamen, aided by American Indian allies, massacred about 120 emigrants traveling by wagon to California.

“While historical fiction can be illuminating, this drama is dangerously misleading. Brigham Young, a revered prophet and courageous pioneer, is, by any historical standard, egregiously mischaracterized as a villainous, violent fanatic. Other individuals and groups are also depicted in ways that reinforce stereotypes that are both inaccurate and harmful,” a statement from the Church read, in part.

‘Gross misrepresentations’: LDS Church speaks on portrayals in Hollywood

The Church continued to say they have long acknowledged and condemned the tragedy while promoting healing and unveiling the truth of the event. They added that “deceptive, graphic and sensationalized” storytelling hides reality and hinders genuine understanding, but can “foster animosity, hate, and even violence.”

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Peter Berg responded to criticism of the show’s representations. He said it’s not a literal depiction of the Mountain Meadows Massacre, as those massacres took place over three days and the one in the show happens quickly.

“I’ve heard some of the pushback, but I haven’t heard anyone from the Mormon side deny that the Meadows Massacre happened and that Mormons did it. I have had them express concerns that we do take other liberties,” he said.

ABC4 has reached out to the team of “American Primeval”, but has yet to hear back at this time.

This isn’t the only time the church has responded to its depictions in media. The church also released a response shortly before the film “Heretic” came out, an A24 film where two missionaries of the church were trapped by the character of Mr. Reed, who put them through trials of their faith and beliefs.

Without naming a specific film or show, the Church has said some of its Hollywood portrayals are “fair and accurate”, but also said some portrayals are stereotypes or gross misrepresentations that have real-life consequences.

“We understand the fascination some in the media have with the Church, but regret that portrayals often rely on sensationalism and inaccuracies that do not fairly and fully reflect the lives of our Church members or the sacred beliefs that they hold dear,” the Church said in a statement.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has spoken out against the popular Netflix series “The Book of Mormon,” calling it “dangerously misleading.”

In a statement released on their official website, the LDS Church expressed concerns about the way the show portrays their faith and its teachings. The series, which follows the lives of fictional characters in a Utah-based Mormon community, has been criticized for its inaccurate and often sensationalized depiction of the religion.

The Church urged viewers to be cautious when consuming media that claims to represent their beliefs, emphasizing the importance of seeking out accurate information from reliable sources. They also emphasized the importance of respecting the beliefs and practices of others, regardless of their faith.

The statement concluded by encouraging members of the LDS Church to engage in open and honest discussions about their faith with those who may have questions or misconceptions. The Church is committed to promoting understanding and dialogue, even in the face of media portrayals that may not accurately represent their beliefs.

Overall, the LDS Church’s response to “The Book of Mormon” serves as a reminder of the importance of critical thinking and discernment when consuming media, especially when it comes to matters of faith.

  • MN school districts cancel school Tuesday because of dangerously cold temps

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Weather Warning for the entire state until 12 p.m. Tuesday as wind chills could plummet to as low as -45.

MINNEAPOLIS — Several school districts across the state, including Minneapolis and St. Paul, are canceling classes due to Tuesday’s subzero temperatures and wind chills.

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Weather Warning for the entire state until noon Tuesday as wind chills could plummet to as low as -45. As a result, several districts have already canceled school or shifted to distance learning in anticipation of the “dangerously cold temperatures.”

Many are also canceling school-sponsored programs. For a complete list of closures and delays, click here.

“Our commitment is to keep families, staff and the community informed of weather-related school closings and cancellations,” said the SPPS district in a news release.

Anoka-Hennepin, the state’s largest school district, also announced it would be closed on Tuesday, saying the decision was made for the “safety of the students and staff.”

According to KARE 11 meteorologist Jamie Kagol, this recent Arctic blast is due to a polar vortex in the region.

“We live on this big blue marble called Earth and at the top and the bottom you have spinning air — a vortex — and that air at the top and bottom, North and South Pole, is very cold,” explained Kagol. “So that’s your polar vortex. That’s what the polar vortex is.”

MN School Districts Cancel School Tuesday Due to Dangerously Cold Temperatures

In light of the extreme weather conditions expected on Tuesday, several Minnesota school districts have made the decision to cancel classes for the day. With wind chills expected to plummet well below zero, the safety and well-being of students and staff are the top priority.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to take necessary precautions to keep their children safe and warm during this frigid weather. It is important to limit time spent outdoors and dress in layers to protect against frostbite and hypothermia.

While the cancellation may disrupt daily routines, the safety of students and staff is paramount. School officials will continue to monitor weather conditions and provide updates as needed.

Stay warm and stay safe, Minnesota!

  • Polar vortex brings dangerously cold temps to MN

A KARE 11 Weather Impact Alert will continue Tuesday with wind chills potentially dropping to -45.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota — Our entire region is under an Extreme Cold Weather Warning until 12 p.m. Tuesday; wind chills could fall as low as -45 degrees.

This Arctic blast is thanks to a polar vortex.

“We live on this big blue marble called Earth and at the top and the bottom you have spinning air — a vortex — and that air at the top and bottom, North and South Pole, is very cold. So that’s your polar vortex. That’s what the polar vortex is,” explained KARE 11 meteorologist Jamie Kagol.

So what does that have to do with Minnesota?

“That polar vortex when it’s spinning, and it’s spinning fast like a top, it’s very stable, very steady. It’s not moving anywhere. But if it weakens and it will weaken… everything weakens and strengthens. As it weakens, it can wobble. When it wobbles, just like that top, it can slide off the pole… slide off the North Pole and it moves into the mid-latitudes, the Great Lakes region, the Upper Midwest. It can move all the way down… Mid-Atlantic, people in Florida can feel it, people in Texas can feel it,” Kagol said.

RELATED: WEATHER: Arctic air grips region

This polar vortex prompted then President-elect Donald Trump to announce his inauguration ceremony would be moving indoors to the Capitol Rotunda.

“We are seeing temperatures near freezing along the Gulf Coast, along the Atlantic Coast. So they are really feeling it. Whereas, for us, we say it’s just cold or it’s colder. But down there, they’re not equipped as well as we are to handle weather like this,” Kagol said.

As for Minnesota, Kagol went on to say, “I was looking at the coldest temperatures of the winter, the past five years or so, and we’re kind of in the norm right now.”

According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, an arctic blast in January 2014 led to a -63 degree wind chill reading at Grand Marais Airport on Jan. 6. That same day, the lowest wind chill temperature in the Twin Cities was -48 degrees.

Five years later, at the end of January 2019, the state experienced some of the lowest air temperatures since 1996 and lowest wind chills since the ’80s, according to the DNR.

2021‘s polar vortex was known more for its length and lateness in the season, lasting for at least a dozen days in February.

Kagol said Tuesday will start out bitter cold but then we will start to recover from this arctic plunge in temperatures. You can read the weather team’s full forecast, here

“This winter should include more polar vortices. So this is just kind of the worst we’ve had so far and I think we’re going to see more repeat itself as we go through February. Even in the short range models are showing a number of these clippers that come in from the Northwest. They’re going to pull that Arctic air south. They’re going to pull that polar air south,” Kagol said. “So this has been the worst so far, in terms of your low temperatures. We’ve seen teens below 0. We have not seen that yet. In fact, it’s been a few years since we’ve seen teens below 0 but I think this is just the first one and I think we’ll find a number of them coming up.”

The Polar Vortex has descended upon Minnesota, bringing with it dangerously cold temperatures that are causing havoc across the state. With wind chills dipping well below zero, residents are being urged to take precautions to stay safe and warm during this frigid weather.

The extreme cold has led to school closures, flight cancellations, and icy road conditions that are making travel treacherous. Authorities are warning people to limit their time outdoors, dress in layers, and avoid prolonged exposure to the bitter cold.

It’s important to remember to check on elderly neighbors, bring pets indoors, and make sure your vehicles are equipped with emergency supplies in case of a breakdown. The Polar Vortex may be relentless, but by taking precautions and staying vigilant, we can weather this cold snap together. Stay safe, Minnesota!

  • Dangerously cold temperatures in Philly, Pa. suburbs this week – NBC10 Philadelphia

As the snow moves out of the Philadelphia region, frigid conditions are settling in.

The drop in temperatures began Sunday night with highs in the low 20s leading to icy overnight road conditions.

The bitter cold will continue in the Philadelphia area Monday morning and last through Thursday. Monday’s high will only be in the mid-20s and wind chills will remain near zero to only five above throughout the day.

The cold will only get worse on Tuesday with wind chills of -15 degrees possible in the morning. Exposed skin under those temperatures can freeze in 20 minutes so be sure to wear plenty of layers if you have to be outside at any time. There won’t be much of a warmup during the day on Tuesday with highs in the upper teens as well as the chance for snow flurries later in the day.

Wednesday will be just as cold with highs in the upper teens during the day. On Thursday, temperatures will be in the single digits in the Philadelphia area in the morning before rising to the upper 20s in the afternoon.

Friday we’ll finally see some relief from the dangerously cold conditions with highs in the low 30s. The “warmup” continues into the weekend with a high of 35 on Saturday and a high of 40 degrees on Sunday.

    Preparing for the cold

The last time it got this cold was Christmas Eve 2022. This kind of cold can freeze pipes, so it’s wise to prepare now if that’s been an issue for you before.

With this wave of dangerously cold weather coming next week, now is a good time to make sure your pipes are protected from freezing.

To protect your home, some tips to avoid pipes freezing include:

    • Insulating unheated areas
    • Covering pipes that are exposed
    • Opening bathroom and kitchen cabinet doors to let warm air flow in

  • Dangerously cold wind chills in Des Moines forecast

Dangerous cold sets in: How low will the temperatures and wind chills go?

IF YOU’D LIKE TO GO CHECK IT OUT, BETTER BUNDLE UP. IT IS INSIDE, BUT GETTING FROM THE PARKING LOT INTO THE LIBRARY, IT’S GOING TO FEEL BITTERLY COLD OUTSIDE. BUT IT’S STILL THE WARMEST DAY OF THE WEEK. EXACTLY. JUST A COUPLE OF STEPS OUTSIDE. YOU’RE GOING TO FEEL THAT BITTERLY COLD AIR, BUT IT’S WARMER NOW THAN IT WILL BE AT ANY POINT TOMORROW. SO WE ARE LOOKING AT SOME VERY COLD CONDITIONS. BEAUTIFUL SKY RIGHT NOW WITH THE SUNSHINE, BUT CHECK IT OUT FROM INSIDE. I THINK TEMPERATURES RIGHT NOW IN THE TEENS WITH WIND CHILLS AROUND FIVE BELOW. THOSE WIND CHILLS WILL REMAIN FIVE BELOW TO ABOUT FIVE ABOVE ALL DAY LONG. SO ABSOLUTELY A FRIGID DAY, BUT EVEN COLDER TOMORROW MORNING. THAT’S WHEN WE’RE LOOKING AT THE POTENTIAL FOR WIND CHILLS TO FALL AROUND 15 TO 25 BELOW ZERO. YEAH, THOSE ARE DANGEROUS WIND CHILLS. WE HAVE IMPACT WEATHER TOMORROW MORNING. MONDAY MORNING AND TUESDAY MORNING BECAUSE OF THOSE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS WIND CHILLS. IT’S JUST GOING TO BE BITTERLY COLD OUT THERE FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS. WE HAVE A COLD WEATHER ADVISORY. THIS REPLACES THE WIND CHILL ADVISORIES THAT WE HAD LAST YEAR FOR MOST OF CENTRAL AND NORTHERN IOWA. THIS IS FOR TOMORROW MORNING. WE’LL LIKELY SEE MORE OF THESE ISSUED FOR MONDAY AND TUESDAY AS TIME GOES ON, AS THE COLD IS GOING TO BE STICKING AROUND RIGHT NOW, IT’S 11 WITH THAT SUNSHINE, BUT IT FEELS LIKE FIVE BELOW THAT NORTH WIND COMING IN ABOUT 14 MILES AN HOUR. COLDEST ACROSS NORTHERN IOWA, SIX IN MASON CITY WITH A WIND CHILL OF 14 BELOW FIVE IN ALGONA. FEELING LIKE 15 BELOW 14 IN GRINNELL, BUT IT FEELS LIKE TWO BELOW CHARITON SITTING AT 12 FEELS LIKE SIX BELOW. SO MOST OF US LOOKING AT BELOW ZERO WIND CHILLS, IF NOT 10 TO 15 BELOW. AND THAT’S ALL BECAUSE OF THIS NORTH WIND STILL COMING IN 15 TO ALMOST 25 MILES AN HOUR ALL ACROSS THE STATE. AND UNFORTUNATELY, THIS BREEZE, IT’S NOT GOING TO GO ANYWHERE TODAY. SO EVERY TIME YOU STEP OUTSIDE, YOU’RE GOING TO BE GREETED BY THAT STRONG NORTH WIND AND THOSE BITTERLY COLD TEMPERATURES, WIND GUSTS 2025 MILES AN HOUR AT NOON INTO THE EVENING, 2025 MILES AN HOUR. THEY BACK OFF A LITTLE BIT HERE AS WE HEAD INTO SUNDAY, BUT WE’RE STILL LOOKING AT WINDS AROUND 15 TO 25 MILES AN HOUR ALL DAY LONG. SO THAT’S JUST GOING TO MAKE THOSE WIND CHILLS BITTERLY COLD AS TEMPERATURES FALL EVEN MORE TOMORROW. SO THIS AFTERNOON WE TRY TO GET BACK UP TO ABOUT 19 DEGREES. BUT YOU NOTICE OUR WIND CHILLS HERE IN THE BLUE. AND THEY ONLY GET UP TO ABOUT 2 OR 3. SO WE DON’T SEE MUCH RECOVERY AS WE HEAD INTO THE AFTERNOON. HOURS 15 UP TOWARD ALGONA, MAYBE 2022, IN LAMONI, BUT OVERALL A VERY COLD DAY TOMORROW THOUGH, JUST BRUTALLY COLD AFTERNOON, HIGH TEMPERATURE OF ONE IN DECORAH, FIVE IN ALGONA, NINE HERE IN DES MOINES. AND OF COURSE, WITH THAT WIND, IT’S GOING TO FEEL EVEN COLDER. SO THIS AFTERNOON WE TRY TO GET THOSE WIND CHILLS ABOVE ZERO. NOT EVERYBODY GETS THERE, THOUGH. PARTS OF NORTHERN IOWA COULD SEE BELOW ZERO. WIND CHILLS ALL DAY LONG. AND THEN TOMORROW MORNING, HERE COMES THAT POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS COLD TALKING WIND CHILLS OF 20 TO NEARLY 30 BELOW ZERO, THE COLDEST IN NORTHERN IOWA THAT CAN PRODUCE FROSTBITE VERY, VERY QUICKLY. IF YOU’RE NOT PREPARED FOR THE COLD CONDITIONS AND LOOK AT MONDAY MORNING. YEAH, WE’RE TALKING AIR TEMPERATURES BELOW ZERO. AND TUESDAY MORNING LIKELY THE COLDEST FIVE BELOW HERE IN DES MOINES. BUT ALGONA GETTING CLOSE TO TEN BELOW THE AIR TEMPERATURE. THE WIND CHILL, OF COURSE, 15 TO 25 BELOW. SO IMPACT WEATHER SUNDAY, MONDAY AND TUESDAY FOR THOSE VERY COLD TEMPERATURES. FINALLY WEDNESDAY WE TURN THE CORNER A LITTLE BIT WITH
