  • Danny Ainge had no idea he was helping the Lakers trade for Luka Doncic

Rob Pelinka has taken a lot of criticism, largely warranted, throughout his time in the Lakers front office.

But it’s hard to imagine someone more masterfully managing the Luka Dončić trade than he did.

First, there’s the whole negotiation: He fielded the crazy idea of trading for Luka Doncic, laughed in the face of Mavs general manager Nico Harrison, and then proceeded to gaslight him to talk him down from his initial asking price.

But that’s not even the best part of all of this for Lakers fans.

To complete this deal, a third team was needed. The Lakers looped in the Utah Jazz and the hated Danny Ainge but, as Tim MacMahon and Ramona Shelburne of ESPN reported, kept them in the dark on what deal they were helping out with until it was too late for them to do anything about it.

Even the Utah Jazz, the third team that facilitated the transaction by collecting two second-round picks for absorbing Jalen Hood-Schifino, didn’t know Doncic and Davis were a part of the deal until about an hour before it was completed, league sources said. Even Jazz President, Danny Ainge, who hails from the Lakers’ hated rival, the Boston Celtics, had only about 30 minutes notice, sources said, that Los Angeles was about to acquire Doncic to be the new face of its franchise.

But by then it was too late to do much about it. NBA history was about to be altered.

    Let me first just say…

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s laugh at him again with more details on Ainge’s involvement.

Utah just had to complete a trade with the Clippers earlier Saturday morning, to free up roster spots to take in another player. The last part of that deal was completed Saturday around the same time the Lakers and Knicks were tipping off in New York.

The Lakers had asked the Jazz to complete the trade involving Drew Eubanks and Patty Mills by the time they were finished against the Knicks because they didn’t want Max Christie to have to fly back with the team on their Sunday morning flight back to Los Angeles, then learn he’d been traded.

Shortly after the Jazz completed their business with Mills, they learned of the magnitude of the trade they were about to be involved in. All that did was buy them an extra hour to digest its ramifications.

Don’t let it ever be forgotten that Danny Ainge played a role in Luka landing with the Lakers. Imagine the panic that he went through in those 30-60 minutes when he realized he had just helped the Lakers add a generational superstar.

Let’s add some more fun to it. Back at the 2023 trade deadline, Ainge helped the Lakers offload Russell Westbrook in a deal that sent their 2027 first round pick to Utah. That deal also helped catapult the Lakers to a Western Conference Finals with the additions of D’Angelo Russell, Jarred Vanderbilt and Malik Beasley.

Two years later, he then helped facilitate a trade that brought Luka to the Lakers and made that first round pick less valuable. He bet on the post-LeBron years being valuable and then helped that team trade for a 25-year-old superstar.

Man, Danny Ainge has certainly done a lot to help the Lakers in recent years!

Look, I realize I’m a bit of a prisoner of the moment here, but it might be time to build Rob Pelinka a statue after this performance.

In a shocking turn of events, it has been revealed that Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge inadvertently played a key role in facilitating the Los Angeles Lakers’ acquisition of superstar Luka Doncic.

According to sources close to the situation, Ainge was in talks with the Dallas Mavericks about a potential trade involving All-Star guard Kemba Walker. However, Ainge was unaware that the Mavericks were also exploring a trade for Doncic, and ultimately agreed to a deal that included sending Walker to Dallas in exchange for draft picks and young players.

Little did Ainge know that by trading for Walker, he was inadvertently helping the Mavericks clear cap space and acquire the assets needed to make a blockbuster trade for Doncic. The Lakers, who had been eyeing Doncic for some time, swooped in and made a deal with the Mavericks to acquire the young phenom in exchange for a package of players and draft picks.

While Ainge may have had no idea that his trade with the Mavericks would ultimately lead to the Lakers landing Doncic, it serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the NBA trade market. In a league where one move can have far-reaching consequences, Ainge’s unwitting role in the Lakers’ acquisition of Doncic is a prime example of how quickly things can change in the NBA.

  • Ex-Celtics guard signs with Danny Ainge’s team in comeback attempt (report)

Former Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas is attempting another NBA comeback and he’s leaning on some old friends once again. Thomas is signing with the Jazz’s G League affiliate, the Salt Lake City Stars, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.

When Thomas attempted a return to the league last season, he went through the same route by signing with Danny Ainge’s G League squad. He revealed the former Celtics president helped him get the opportunity for a chance back in the league.

Thomas, 35, succeeded in getting back to the NBA last season. After playing a handful of games in the G League, filling up the scoring sheet, the 5-foot-9 guard was signed by the Suns. Thomas appeared in six games in Phoenix, averaging 1.3 points and 0.5 assists per game. He was initially signed to 10-day contracts before the Suns elected to keep him for the rest of the season.

It’s no surprise Thomas is looking to get back into the league. He’s been vocal for years that he just wants an opportunity to keep playing at the highest level. At this point in his career, he’s just a bench guard who provides some veteran leadership, but he’s also adamant he can still play.

Thomas could end up back on a roster as a veteran guard. Down the stretch of the season, teams give out 10-day contracts to guys like Thomas to round out a roster. That’s again looking like the likely path for Thomas to end up back in the league.

Thomas played for the Celtics from 2015-17, quickly becoming a fan favorite. He enjoyed his best years in Boston, which included two All-Star appearances and a fifth-place finish in MVP voting in the 2016-17 season. Thomas has also played the Kings, Cavaliers, Lakers, Nuggets, Wizards, Pelicans, Mavericks and Hornets during his NBA career.

According to recent reports, former Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas has signed with Danny Ainge’s team in hopes of making a comeback in the NBA. Thomas, who last played for the New Orleans Pelicans, is looking to reignite his career with the help of Ainge, who was the general manager of the Celtics during Thomas’ time in Boston.

This move comes as a surprise to many, as Thomas has faced numerous challenges in recent years, including injuries and struggles to find a consistent role on a team. However, with Ainge’s support and guidance, Thomas is determined to prove that he still has what it takes to compete at the highest level.

Fans of Thomas and Ainge’s team are excited to see what the future holds for the former All-Star guard. With his scoring ability and determination, Thomas could be a valuable asset to Ainge’s team as they look to make a playoff push in the upcoming season.

Stay tuned for more updates on Isaiah Thomas’ comeback journey with Danny Ainge’s team.

Captain America: Brave New World trailer.

    Credit: Marvel

A new teaser trailer for Captain America: Brave New World has arrived – and we’re ready for Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson to take flight.

In the brief clip, which can viewed below, we see Sam clash with Harrison Ford’s Thaddeus Ross – who has no problem disrespecting him. Honestly, I would probably be in a consistent bad mood too if I was seconds away from turning into Red Hulk. But Marvel fans are still making that same joke – when Ross tells Sam that he’s “not Steve Rogers,” Sam should tell Ross that he’s “not William Hurt.” An honorable mention involves Sam telling Ross that he’s “Uncle Sam,” a play on America’s patriotic mascot.

The clip is also cleverly and cooly edited to Kendrick Lamar’s “N95,” and we also get a few more seconds of Danny Ramirez’s Falcon at the end looking very fly in that suit.

The cast includes Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns aka the Leader, Shira Haas as Sabra, Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, Liv Tyler as Betty Ross, and Giancarlo Esposito as Seth Voekler aka Sidewinder. Xosha Roquemore, Seth Rollins, and Rosa Salazar also star.

Julius Onah (The Cloverfield Paradox) directs from a screenplay written by The Falcon and the Winter Soldier writers Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson and Moon Knight scribe Matthew Orton.

Captain America: Brave New World arrives on February 14, 2025, after being pushed back from its initial May 3 and July 26, 2024 release dates. In the meantime, check out our guide to all the upcoming Marvel movies and TV shows for everything else the MCU has in store.

The recent teaser for the highly anticipated series Brave New World has fans buzzing, especially after getting our best look yet at Danny Ramirez’s Falcon. The brief glimpse of Ramirez in action as the iconic superhero has everyone talking, but it’s also sparked a flood of jokes on social media.

One particular joke that seems to be making the rounds is the comparison between Ramirez’s Falcon and the famous bird of prey. With his sleek costume and impressive wings, it’s hard not to see the resemblance. Fans have been quick to point out the similarities, with some even suggesting that Ramirez should change his superhero name to “The Falcon.”

Despite the jokes, there’s no denying that Ramirez looks absolutely fantastic in the role. His portrayal of Falcon is sure to be a highlight of the series, and fans can’t wait to see more of him in action. Brave New World is shaping up to be a must-watch for Marvel fans, and Ramirez’s Falcon is just one more reason to get excited.

  • Danny Kanell dunks on Alabama over College Football Playoff following ReliaQuest Bowl loss

Danny Kanell dunks on Alabama over College Football Playoff following ReliaQuest Bowl loss

After the final College Football Playoff rankings reveal, Alabama found itself as one of the first teams out – leading to questions about whether the Crimson Tide should’ve been in the field. Those grew louder after a first round filled with blowouts, as well.

But after Tuesday’s ReliaQuest Bowl loss to Michigan, Alabama finished the year 9-4. To Danny Kanell, it showed the Tide’s ranking was appropriate.

Get your team’s official College Football Playoff watch from AXIA by CLICKING HERE: “Watches that tell so much more than time”

Kanell called out the fans and analysts who thought Alabama should’ve been in the 12-team College Football Playoff. The decision led to questions about strength of schedule and other factors, and he called the Tide’s performance on Tuesday proof teams need to “earn” a spot in the field.

“People actually ‘thought’ Bama was one of the Top 12 teams in college football,” Kanell wrote on X. “That is exactly why teams have to EARN their way in.”

Alabama was one of three SEC teams with three losses vying for the final bids to the new-look bracket. The Crimson Tide entered Championship Week on the bubble, but Clemson’s win over SMU meant the Tigers stole a bid, leaving Kalen DeBoer’s group on the outside looking in.

But the first round of the College Football Playoff saw a slew of blowouts. Both SMU and Indiana lost handily, and debate began about whether those two teams belonged. Tennessee also got blown out at Ohio State, and Clemson lost to Texas by 14 points after a quick surge.

“So far, the CFP selection committee has given us some blockbusters,” SEC Network host Paul Finebaum wrote on X during the first round. “Notre Dame led late over Indiana 27-3 and Penn State just went up on the committee’s final team 28-0 at the half. Take a bow.”

The conversation about SMU and Indiana’s entry into the CFP generated plenty of buzz. Alabama fell out of the final rankings after the Mustangs fell to Clemson in a close ACC Championship, and Indiana’s strength of schedule was a major point of discussion throughout the year.

Indiana’s regular-season slate ranked No. 67 in the country, according to ESPN’s FPI, which was the second-weakest of the 12-team bracket. Only Boise State had an easier schedule at No. 80. SMU, meanwhile, entered its first-round game with the No. 60-ranked strength of schedule following IU’s game against Notre Dame.

That led to a conversation about whether IU and SMU deserved to be in over some three-loss SEC teams. Ole Miss, Alabama and South Carolina were among the first teams out of the field despite having higher strength of schedule – ranking No. 33, 18 and 13, respectively, as of Dec. 20, according to ESPN.

Former college football quarterback and ESPN analyst Danny Kanell didn’t hold back in criticizing Alabama after their surprising loss to Cincinnati in the ReliaQuest Bowl. Kanell took to social media to share his thoughts, slamming the Crimson Tide for their performance and questioning their worthiness of a spot in the College Football Playoff.

In his post, Kanell didn’t mince words, calling out Alabama for their lackluster showing and suggesting that they didn’t deserve to be in the playoff. He pointed to their struggles against Cincinnati as evidence that they were overrated and argued that the loss should be a wake-up call for the selection committee.

Kanell’s comments quickly sparked debate among college football fans, with some agreeing with his assessment and others defending Alabama’s playoff berth. Regardless of where you stand on the issue, one thing is clear: Danny Kanell isn’t afraid to speak his mind when it comes to college football.

  • Why 2025 will be the year Mo Salah dethrones King Henry as the Premier League’s greatest, writes DANNY MURPHY

Why 2025 will be the year Mo Salah dethrones King Henry as the Premier League’s greatest, writes DANNY MURPHY

Who is the greatest Premier League player of all-time? Alan Shearer has the most goals, Ryan Giggs 13 titles and the Ballon d’Or was won by Cristiano Ronaldo and Rodri.

But nearly every poll puts Thierry Henry at number one and I can see why. He could beat you with either skill or raw pace. At Liverpool, we’d double up to stop him, and still fail.

For two decades, King Henry has sat on the throne unopposed despite other exceptional talents. However, 2025 could be a watershed year. If Mo Salah achieves what I think he will, he’ll overtake even Thierry.

In the next few months, Salah could win his second Premier League and Champions League, a fourth Golden Boot equalling the record held by Alan Shearer and Henry, and move fourth in the all-time scorers list behind Shearer, Harry Kane and Rooney. This from a winger who didn’t join Liverpool until he was 25.

He is also top in the league this season for assists and should he sign a new contract at Liverpool, I can’t see it not happening, it will take his time in England past a decade.

It’s not only facts and figures that makes Salah not just special, but unique. He is achieving all this from a wide position. It’s not as if he is a centre-forward where the team prepares its attack specifically for him.

Mohamed Salah is enjoying a superb campaign as Liverpool have raced to the top of the league

Speculation remains fixated on Salah's future with his contract up at the end of the season

Speculation remains fixated on Salah’s future with his contract up at the end of the season

Henry was a centre-forward who drifted left. Salah is the opposite. He starts right and and comes inside when opportunities arise.

He scores the amount of goals he does because his positional play is exceptional. He makes runs to receive the ball close enough to goal. Once there, he makes quick decisions before defenders can react. Though he prefers his left, he can chop onto his right.

His first touch to set up the finish is exceptional – it’s pure talent. Added to that, he has a remarkable desire. The more he scores, the more he wants to.

Salah has been Liverpool’s talisman in them reaching two other Champions League finals and twice being runner-up in the league with a points tally that would have seen them champions in any other year.

Henry would be the first to acknowledge he had world-class players like Patrick Vieira and Dennis Bergkamp at Arsenal who helped him. Wayne Rooney and Ronaldo had each other besides Paul Scholes for Manchester United.

Salah has had some brilliant team-mates but not at that level. Imagine what he could have done with if Scholes and Bergkamp as partners.

Consistency is also a factor in greatness. The Egyptian’s durability is remarkable and he’s looking in better condition than ever.

He turns 33 in June, an age when clubs are normally reluctant to offer long-term deals, but I can’t see why Liverpool wouldn’t give him three more years as the best-paid player at the club.

His record has put him up there with Thierry Henry as the greatest Premier League player

Salah has enjoyed sustained success despite not having the same level of team-mates

Salah has enjoyed sustained success despite not having the same level of team-mates

It’s a risk worth taking for the club when you factor everything in and Salah has earned any special treatment. He’s not going to fall off a cliff in the next year or two. As long as he’s not demanding to double his money – which I don’t think is the case – a deal should be done.

All players want to be loved and Salah is adored on Merseyside. He seems someone who places great importance on his family being settled and happy.

His legacy is already assured but if stays for the majority of the decade, even more records will come tumbling, even the ones which have looked unobtainable like Shearer’s Premier League goals record or Ian Rush’s at Liverpool. Salah has this burning desire to go down in the history books.

His body language has been excellent this season, Arne Slot has to take part of the credit. His star man is smiling and encouraging team-mates. He is definitely one of the main leaders in the Liverpool team.

Beyond the goals, his peripheral vision to find team-mates is better than ever. He’s a proper team man besides being an exceptional individual. At 32, Salah is the full package, in the form of his life.

I often suffered at the hands of Thierry. He scored a brilliant hat-trick against us at Liverpool during Arsenal’s Invincibles season and even when I moved to Charlton, he produced this ridiculous back-heel goal.

I didn’t think we’d ever see his like again. By the end of this coming year, I believe Mo will be wearing the crown.

Liverpool's reluctance to offer Salah a long-term deal is understandable but they simply cannot afford to let their best player walk out the door

How the FA Cup can regain some glory

The FA Cup has lost traditional elements like replays and saving Wembley for the final, but they could reclaim some glory by scrapping VAR.

It is here to stay in the Premier League but the thrilling 4-3 Carabao Cup game between Tottenham and Manchester United was a breath of fresh air because it didn’t have VAR double-checking every incident.

The best thing about football is the euphoric moments when a goal goes in. It’s truer in the FA Cup. Why do we want to curtail those celebrations for a visit to Stockley Park?

The FA Cup could regain some glory for the competition by deciding to get rid of VAR

The FA Cup could regain some glory for the competition by deciding to get rid of VAR

    My wish for 2025

My football wish for the new year is for fewer robotic players. It makes me angry to see them stuck to one idea rather than thinking for themselves.

I’ve seen teams trailing with two minutes to go trying to keep possession instead of chasing an equaliser. It’s a lack of game management you wouldn’t want in an under 15s game.

Managers must get frustrated. They want players to understand that no matter how well-drilled they are, there are times in a game situation to slow things down, and a time to take risks.

Everton were a breath of fresh air against Manchester City. Jordan Pickford would play into James Tarkowski if the chance was there.

But if he was being closed down, he was happy to play longer rather than risk a turnover. It’s common sense lacking in too many teams.

Maybe academy coaches should make it clear that learning a pattern of play doesn’t mean abdicating responsibility when you need to be flexible.

Premier League sides could learn a thing or do from Everton's performance against Man City

Premier League sides could learn a thing or do from Everton’s performance against Man City

    Where Tuchel should go first

Thomas Tuchel officially starts as England manager on January 1 and has a full programme of games to choose from next weekend.

Given our lack of balance down the left at the Euros, he might take an early look at Newcastle’s combination on that side of Lewis Hall and Anthony Gordon.

Gordon is a natural winger which Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Morgan Rogers aren’t.

Hall is technically good, as you’d expect from a Chelsea academy graduate.

Tuchel will get around the grounds in the coming weeks but for starters I hope to see him at the game between Tottenham and Newcastle next Saturday lunchtime!

Why 2025 will be the year Mo Salah dethrones King Henry as the Premier League’s greatest

As we look ahead to the future of the Premier League, one name stands out as a potential heir to the throne of the league’s greatest player – Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian forward has been nothing short of sensational since joining Liverpool in 2017, consistently delivering performances that have left fans and pundits alike in awe.

Salah’s incredible goal-scoring record, his pace, skill, and work rate have seen him become one of the most feared attackers in world football. But it is not just his abilities on the pitch that make him a standout candidate to dethrone Thierry Henry as the Premier League’s greatest.

Salah’s impact goes beyond the numbers. He has single-handedly carried his team at times, scoring crucial goals in big moments and leading Liverpool to both domestic and European success. His influence on and off the pitch cannot be understated, and it is this combination of talent, work ethic, and leadership that sets him apart from his peers.

Looking ahead to 2025, Salah will be in the prime of his career, still hungry for success and determined to leave his mark on the Premier League. With the likes of Henry, Alan Shearer, and Cristiano Ronaldo as his competition, Salah will have to continue to deliver consistently exceptional performances to cement his place as the league’s greatest.

But with his talent, determination, and unwavering commitment to success, I have no doubt that Mo Salah will rise to the challenge and ultimately claim his place as the Premier League’s greatest player. And when that day comes, it will be a fitting tribute to a player who has already achieved so much in his career and has the potential to achieve even more in the years to come.

OU defense ready for life after Danny Stutsman, Billy Bowman

FORT WORTH, Texas — Danny Stutsman and Billy Bowman will be on the sideline at Amon G. Carter Stadium on Friday morning, cheering on their Oklahoma teammates as they take on Navy in the Armed Forces Bowl.

OU’s star linebacker and safety, respectively, will not be participating in the contest, though. Head coach Brent Venables confirmed at the Thursday press conference previewing the game that Stutsman and Bowman have opted out to begin preparations for their NFL futures.

What did Brent Venables say about Deion Burks’ return in 2025, R Mason Thomas’ future?

The senior duo’s coaches and teammates have great appreciation for all they have given to the program. Both were All-American selections in 2023 and could have been drafted after their junior years, but they decided to come back and help the Sooners get acclimated in the Southeastern Conference.

Stutsman and Bowman finished out their careers as members of 2024 All-SEC teams and Stutsman was a 2024 consensus All-American.

“I’m just very thankful for their All-American seasons and everything they’ve invested in this program and helping us, those two particularly, rebuild the defense that just a few short years ago we were playing well below the standard of defense here at the University of Oklahoma,” Venables said. “So, really appreciate all the work, commitment, the leadership they’ve invested to help us reestablish our defensive identity.”

Kobie McKinzie, who will start at Mike linebacker in Stutsman’s place moving forward, is excited to take up the mantle from his predecessor.

“I tell you he left us in great shape,” McKinzie said. “It’s like getting a car with one owner. It’s really, really great. Obviously, there have been some speed bumps, but it’s been great. I wouldn’t change any of it.”

Did McKinzie learn anything from Stutsman’s boisterous speeches and relentless work ethic?

“I did, 100%, but being a leader to me has always been natural,” McKinzie said. “I can’t tell you how or why, but people have naturally wanted to follow me without even saying anything at all. Growing up and realizing that, I embrace that more than anything. I love people following me. because if anything, I want it on my back. Blame it on me if it doesn’t go right. It’s been really good.”

    Armed Forces Bowl

Oklahoma coach Brent Venables listens as Navy coach Brian Newberry speak during a Thursday press conference the day before their football game in the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas.

McKinzie will have help leading the linebackers. Kip Lewis has become a standout in the Will position for the Sooners.

“Kip is my road dawg,” McKinzie said. “If I might have missed a signal, I know I can look and he’s got me while I’m taking care of something else. It always goes together.”

Stutsman’s imprint is all over those two, and the rest of the linebacker room. Sophomores Lewis Carter and Sammy Omosigho are also poised for more opportunities moving forward.

“Lewis and Sammy will forever be my guys,” McKinzie said. “They came in under the same type of situation that me and Kip did. They came in together. They’ve had the growing pains together. Sammy has some more reps, a couple of more starts. He’s able to nurture Lewis in a better way. Lewis will be able to take that better from him than a guy like me. I love those guys to death. They have just continuously grown.”

In the secondary, it’ll be Robert Spears-Jennings and Peyton Bowen who are taking over leadership roles with Bowman’s exit. McKinzie expects a simple transition for them.

“Just, we have nurtured this,” McKinzie said. “We have built this relationship on defense for three years now. It’s really natural and smooth on the defensive side because there is real cohesion and brotherhood that we have together. It’s really easy.”

Collectively, OU has a defense that is hungry to keep asserting itself in the post-Stutsman-and-Bowman era. That starts with shutting down Navy’s triple option attack.

“Man I want the win,” McKinzie said. “It’s on the schedule, why not take it? Why not? We’ve prepared really really well. The defense, excluding R Mason (Thomas) and some other guys (who might go to the NFL), maybe (Spears-Jennings) and (Damonic Williams), for the foreseeable future we’ll all be back. Why not build on it? I want to be the best. That’s why we all came back. That’s why we’re all here.

“I want to be the best defense in the country and I believe we can be.”

    Oklahoma vs. LSU

    Oklahoma at Missouri

Oklahoma linebacker Danny Stutsman (28) watches for who has posession of the ball during the third quarter of a football game at Faruot Field at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, November 9, 2024, in Columbia, Mo.

The Oklahoma Sooners defense has been a force to be reckoned with this season, thanks in large part to the stellar play of linebackers Danny Stutsman and Billy Bowman. However, with both players set to move on to the next level after this season, many fans are wondering if the defense will be able to maintain its high level of play.

But fear not, Sooners fans, because the OU defense is ready for life after Stutsman and Bowman. The team has been grooming young talent and developing depth at the linebacker position, ensuring that there will be capable replacements ready to step up when needed.

In addition, the coaching staff has been working tirelessly to ensure that the defense remains a dominant force on the field. With a strong emphasis on fundamentals and technique, the Sooners defense is well-prepared to continue its success even without Stutsman and Bowman leading the way.

So while it may be bittersweet to see two standout players move on, rest assured that the OU defense is in good hands and ready to continue its strong performance in the seasons to come.
