WTA Linz Day 3 Predictions Including Sakkari vs Tomova

Second-round matches will begin on day three of the WTA Linz Open whilst the first round draw also draws to a close. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the slate in Austria, but who will book their spot in the next round?

WTA Linz Day 3 Predictions

Katerina Siniakova vs Elina Avanesyan

Head-to-head: first meeting

This is Elina Avanesyan’s finest start to a season, and despite her inability to defend her third-round points at the Australian Open, she appears to be a better player, with a ground game that might pose issues for anyone this week. It will be an exciting match against Katerina Siniakova, who is a solid player and plays with variety. However, Siniakova is yet to win a main draw match this season and a challenge like Avanesyan may be too much for her in the first round.

Prediction: Avanesyan in 3

Anna Blinkova vs Sinja Kraus

Head-to-head: first meeting

The Australian summer wasn’t particularly impressive for Anna Blinkova but she did win a match in every tournament she entered. Equally, Blinkova has a terrible record at the Linz Open, failing to win a main draw match in four attempts. However, this should be a winnable match for her against the local qualifier Shinja Kraus, who doesn’t have much experience at this level.

Prediction: Blinkova in 2

Clara Tauson vs Sorana Cirstea

Head-to-head: first meeting

Sorana Cirstea won her first match since May 2024 in the first round in a three-setter. Cirstea was out for a long time due to surgery and this must be a big win for her as she snaps an eight-match losing streak. However, beating Clara Tauson, who is in form, maybe too much for her this early in her comeback. Expect the Danish player to continue her great start to the season and win this match.

Prediction: Tauson in 2

Anastasia Potapova vs Rebecca Sramkova

Head-to-head: first meeting

The 2023 champion at the WTA Linz Open, Anastasia Potapova, is off to a great start in Austria, dropping just four games in the first round against Julia Grabher. Potapova served superbly and stayed unbroken throughout the match. Rebecca Sramkova will be a more difficult opponent, and Potapova must play her best tennis to win. I am giving a slight edge to the Russian.

Prediction: Potapova in 3

Maria Sakkari vs Viktoriya Tomova

Head-to-head: Sakkari 3-0 Tomova

Maria Sakkari’s struggle to win matches has continued this season, losing four of the five main draw matches. But the year has just started and a good run here will help her confidence. Sakkari is a former semifinalist at the Linz Open and her flawless record against Viktoriya Tomova makes her the odds-on favourite to win this match. Tomova got her first win of the season in the first round but this will be a much tougher task.

Prediction: Sakkari in 3

Main photo credit: Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

The third day of the WTA Linz tournament is set to feature some exciting matches, including a clash between Maria Sakkari and Viktoriya Tomova. Sakkari, currently ranked 13th in the world, will be looking to continue her strong form and secure a spot in the next round.

In this matchup, Sakkari is the clear favorite, with her powerful groundstrokes and aggressive playing style likely to overpower Tomova. However, Tomova is a capable player and should not be underestimated. She will need to bring her A-game and play aggressively if she hopes to challenge Sakkari.

Ultimately, I predict that Sakkari will come out on top in this match, likely in straight sets. Her experience and superior skill level should see her through to the next round. Stay tuned for more updates and predictions from the WTA Linz tournament.

India May Cut Duties On Some Goods From US, Day After Trump’s Tariffs Jab

New Delhi:

India may cut tariffs on a few high-end goods – such as a special kind of steel, expensive motorcycles, and electronic items – imported from the United States, sources told NDTV Profit Wednesday. Such a move is not likely to have a major impact on the respective domestic industries and this could be confirmed Saturday, when Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presents the budget. India imports 20 items from the US on which there are duties in excess of 100 per cent.

All of this comes a day after US President Donald Trump referred to India, China, and Brazil – founding members of the increasingly influential BRICS bloc – as “tremendous tariff makers”. Speaking to House Republicans, he said he would not allow this to continue, declaring, “… we’re not going to let that happen any longer… we’re going to put America first.”

“We’re going to put tariffs on outside countries and people that really mean harm to us. China is a tremendous tariff-maker, and India, Brazil, and so many other countries. (But) we’re not going to let that happen any longer… because we’re going to put America first,” Trump declared to cheers.

READ | Donald Trump Fires “Tremendous Tariff-Maker” Warning At India, China

Trump’s Tuesday broadside on India (and China and Brazil) and ‘high tariffs’ echoed comments made in September, in the build-up to the November 20 election. “We’re going to do reciprocal trade. If anybody charges us 10 cents (in duties)… if they charge us $2… if they charge us a 100 per cent or 250 per cent… we charge them the same thing,” he told his supporters.

“These people (referring to Indians, Chinese, and Brazilians) are the sharpest… they use it against us. But India is very tough. Brazil is very tough… China is the toughest of all… but we’re taking care of China with the tariffs,” he said.

The remarks then were made days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, although that was when Joe Biden was still President. And now, days after his “tremendous tariff-makers” swipe, Mr Modi is scheduled to visit the US again.

High tariffs on goods imported into the US – specifically from China – were a frequent refrain during Trump’s campaign. He also warned of “100 per cent tariffs” on BRICS nations to shut down talk of not using the dollar as the common currency.

Trump’s tariffs tirade has been seen by many as a clear economic agenda, questionable though the means may be, and that is to jumpstart manufacturing in the US. By marking up the prices of key commodities like steel, semi-conductors, medicines, etc., he is hoping to do just that. “Under the ‘America First’ economic model, as tariffs on other countries go up, taxes on American workers and businesses will come down and massive numbers of jobs and factories will come home.”

READ | How Donald Trump Is Using “Tariffs” As A Weapon

The other perspective is ‘tariff as a weapon’, a point-of-view underlined by Trump’s clash with Colombia over deportations. The South American country initially refused to accept a plane loaded with ‘illegal immigrants’.

READ | “Cooperate Or…”: In Colombia Face-off, Trump’s Strong Message

The Trump administration responded by slapping a massive 25 per cent tariff on goods from there, leaving Colombian President Gustavo Petro with no option but to relent. Trump later declared the world would do well to look at this exchange.

India May Cut Duties On Some Goods From US, Day After Trump’s Tariffs Jab

In a surprising move, India has announced that it may cut duties on some goods imported from the United States, just a day after President Trump criticized India for imposing high tariffs on American products.

The Indian government has stated that it is considering reducing tariffs on a range of items such as Harley-Davidson motorcycles, almonds, and walnuts, in an effort to ease trade tensions with the US.

This development comes after President Trump accused India of being a “tariff king” and demanded that the country lower its trade barriers with the US. The Trump administration has been pushing for greater market access for American products in India, which has been a point of contention between the two countries.

The potential reduction in duties on US goods could be seen as a gesture of goodwill from India towards the US, as both countries look to strengthen their trade relationship and avoid escalating tensions.

It remains to be seen how this move will impact trade negotiations between the US and India, but it could potentially pave the way for a more amicable resolution to their trade disputes. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.

Sri Lanka v Australia: first men’s cricket Test, day one – live | Australia cricket team

Key events

So teenage wonderboy Sam Konstas has been dropped after two Tests and Scott Boland’s run of bad luck continues, also dumped after winning man of the match honours in his last Test. Again.

Konstas makes way for Travis Head to open the batting with fellow Asian wicket specialist Usman Khawaja and Boland will shine the pine to allow specialist spinners right-armer Todd Murphy and leftie Matthew Kuhnemann to return to the line-up.

An interesting challenge now awaits Konstas who seemed assured of playing in the Ashes but whose rollercoaster rise has now been suddenly derailed. If Josh Inglis, a fine player of spin, takes his chance in the middle order this series and Head excels at the top and decides to stay there, Australian cricket’s Next Big Thing might be left waiting for Usman Khawaja to retire if he’s to dust off his baggy green.

It’s nothing Geoff Lemon didn’t see coming…

Teams

Final XIs have been confirmed and it’s a case of ‘Come in spinner!’ as both sides plump for triple-threat spin attacks.

Australia XI: 1 Usman Khawaja 2 Travis Head 3 Marnus Labuschagne 4 Steven Smith (capt.) 5 Josh Inglis 6 Beau Webster 7 Alex Carey (wk) 8 Mitchell Starc 9 Mathew Kuhnemann 10 Nathan Lyon 11 Todd Murphy

Sri Lanka XI: 1 Dimuth Karunaratne, 2 Oshada Fernando, 3 Dinesh Chandimal, 4 Angelo Mathews, 5 Kamindu Mendis, 6 Dhananjaya de Silva (capt.), 7 Kusal Mendis (wk), 8 Prabath Jayasuriya, 9 Nishan Peiris, 10 Jeffrey Vandersay 11 Asitha Fernando

Josh Inglis is confirmed to play and has received baggy green cap No 470 from redoubtable former Test opener Geoff Marsh whose son Mitchell was dropped for this series. The English-born, Australian-raised Inglis completes the Australian cricket holy trinity, having already played 26 ODIs and 29 T20s in the green and gold.

Australia have won the toss and will bat first

Good toss to win for Steve Smith. Australia will bat first and bowl last on what is traditionally a fiercely spinning Galle wicket.

Updated at

As Australia’s men get their series under way today, Australia’s women are preparing to play the Ashes Test against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground tomorrow. Australia are unbeaten in the series so far and, if Beth Mooney’s fighting words today are any indicator, there’s plenty more pain for the English to come.

Since 2007-08, Australia and Sri Lanka have played for the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy, named for the two titans of spin bowling from either nation. The trophy itself is a beauty, with the magic hands of both men cast in bronze and gripping match balls.

Captains Steve Smith and Dhananjaya de Silva pose with the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy. Photograph: Ishara S Kodikara/AFP/Getty Images

With final XIs pending here’s how the squads line up for this series…

Sri Lanka: Dhananjaya de Silva (c), Dimuth Karunaratne, Pathum Nissanka, Oshada Fernando, Lahiru Udara, Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Mathews, Kamindu Mendis, Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Sonal Dinusha, Prabath Jayasuriya, Jeffrey Vandersay, Nishan Peiris, Asitha Fernando, Vishwa Fernando, Lahiru Kumara, Milan Rathnayake

Australia: Steve Smith (c), Sean Abbott, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cooper Connolly, Travis Head (vc), Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Sam Konstas, Matt Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Nathan McSweeney, Todd Murphy, Mitchell Starc, Beau Webster.

Australia enter this series without spearhead and captain Pat Cummins, who has sent his superhero cape to the dry-cleaners and stayed home for the birth of his second child while plotting the next step in Australia conquest of the cricketing world.

With Josh Hazlewood also sidelined, the bowling attack Australia’s selectors go with here in Galle is the subject of heated conjecture. Veterans Mitchell Starc and spinner Nathan Lyon seem certain to play. But who partners each?

Will people’s hero paceman Scott Boland get a chance alongside Starc with the new ball? Or does uncapped NSW firebrand Sean Abbott get his opportunity at last? Perhaps the medium pace of SCG Test hero allrounder Beau Webster is promoted up the bowling order?

Given the dry spinning wickets here in Galle, it’s also possible Australia could opt for a three-prong spin attack. Will Todd Murphy, Matthew Kuhnemann or rookie Cooper Connolly partner Lyon? Or will Australia pick just one of that trio and trust the part-time tweak of Travis Head who took a handy 4-10 to clinch the first Test for Australia in 2022?

There is risk with all three spinners, with Murphy not having played a Test in over a year, left-armer Kuhnemann recovering from thumb surgery and Connolly a veteran of just four first-class games.

The playing XIs for this match will be confirmed shortly, with plenty of debate over who will start and where they’ll bat/ bowl if picked.

Australia dropped a bombshell yesterday by confirming Travis Head will replace Sam Konstas as opener. Will the 19-year-old Boxing Day Test hero move down the order or drop out of the XI entirely? If the latter, who fills that vacant middle-order spot? Will Nathan McSweeney – a specialist No 5 at home – be recalled? Or are local reports on the money saying dynamic wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis is set to win a Test debut a month shy of his 30th birthday?

Feel free to drop me an email with your tuppence worth at any stage today. Or simply rhapsodise about Konstas in prose or poetry so we can get under Barney Ronay’s skin ahead of the Ashes…

There is deep intrigue surrounding this series, with key personnel missing from both squads, several stars believed to be playing injured and a host of fresh faces bracing for baptism in the pressure cooker of Test cricket.

Both sides had a good 2024, with Sri Lanka boasting a 6-4 win-loss record and Australia 7-2-1. However, Australia still have their tail up after defeating India 3-1 to win back the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in a decade, whereas Sri Lanka finished the year with a 2-0 away loss to South Africa, losing both Tests by hefty 233-run and 109-run margins.

Here’s how Geoff Lemon previewed the first Test…

Preamble

Angus Fontaine

Greetings cricket fans! Welcome to the Guardian’s over-by-over coverage of the opening day in the first Test between Australia and Sri Lanka at Galle International Cricket Stadium. Angus Fontaine here with you for the opening stages before Rob Smyth takes you home to stumps.

These two nations have been playing Tests against each other since 1983. In the 33 Tests over those 42 years, Australia has won 20 to Sri Lanka’s five, with eight draws. Overall, in 14 series, Australia has won 11 and Sri Lanka just two, with their sole triumphs coming at home in 1999 and 2016. However, the pendulum has swung back to Sri Lanka of late. Of the seven Tests contested in the past decade, Sri Lanka lead 4-3 (no draws).

If you’re looking for a form guide for 2025, look no further than the most recent two-Test showdown in 2022, the only drawn series ever staged between these countries, both played at Galle, today’s battleground.

Australia won the first Test by 10 wickets inside three days, with Nathan Lyon taking nine scalps and Travis Head 4-10 in the second innings. Sri Lanka then staged an epic fightback in the second Test. After Marnus Labuschagne (104) and Steve Smith (145) led Australia’s to 364, Dinesh Chandimal (206) swept Sri Lanka to 554 before Prabath Jayasuriya (6-59) rolled the visitors for 151 to seal victory by an innings and 39 runs.

It was a stunning reminder of how formidable Sri Lanka can be at home and why Australia are wary. Despite beating India 3-1 in the home summer and securing their berth at the World Test Championship in July, the No 1 Test side in the world somehow enter this 2025 series as underdogs.

The stage is set, the fuse is lit, and action gets under way at 3.30pm AEST.

Welcome to our live coverage of the first men’s cricket Test match between Sri Lanka and Australia!

Today marks the beginning of what promises to be an exciting series between these two talented teams. The Australian cricket team is looking to continue their recent success on the international stage, while Sri Lanka is aiming to make a statement and show that they are a force to be reckoned with.

Both teams have been preparing diligently for this match, and it will be interesting to see how they perform on the field. Will Australia’s strong batting lineup be able to handle Sri Lanka’s skilled bowlers? Can Sri Lanka’s batsmen handle Australia’s pace attack?

Stay tuned as we provide live updates and analysis throughout the day. Don’t miss a moment of the action as these two teams battle it out for supremacy on the cricket field. Let’s sit back, relax, and enjoy what promises to be a thrilling day of Test cricket!

Game Day Guide: Stars at Golden Knights

First Shift

The Stars had a few issues to start this season.

With Joe Pavelski retiring and both Robertson and Johnston navigating injuries in training camp, Dallas got off to a slow start on the power play, hanging near the bottom of the league at 16 percent. The lads in Victory Green also were struggling on the road with a 6-8-0 mark away from home shortly after Thanksgiving.

It was a confusing time for a team that had the best road record in franchise history (26-10-5) the year before and ranked sixth in power play success at 24.2 percent.

But starting on December 23, things started to change – and now a lot of early problems seem to be in the rearview mirror. As the Stars roll into Vegas for a big showdown on Tuesday, they are 7-2-0 in their past nine road games. They also have pushed the power play success rate to 25.5 percent over the past month.

It’s a nice reminder of just what this team can be when everything is clicking.

“That’s what good teams do,” coach Pete DeBoer said when asked about addressing problems and finding solutions.

The Stars have proven they are a good team. They have made it to the Western Conference Final two years in a row. They finished with the best record in the West last season. They have adjusted not only the recovery time needed by Johnston and Robertson, but also to losing Tyler Seguin (hip surgery) and Mason Marchment (face surgery) midseason. And they are battling once again for a top spot in the West.

Dallas sits fourth in the Western Conference at 31-17-1 with 63 points (.643 points percentage). It beat Vegas (31-15-4, 66 points) at home last week, so it will get to test out its road legs on Tuesday.

DeBoer said the coaching staff is always trying to resolve issues, and the start to the year was a challenge. But the group effort between coaches and players has been a satisfying one so far.

“That’s what we do,” DeBoer said. “We come in every morning and look at areas that are in a good place, you want to keep them in a good place. And areas that aren’t, you have to improve. That’s daily. This won’t be the last time something creeps in and part of that is recognizing it before it gets too far down the road.”

Both Robertson and Johnston have learned quite a bit already. Pavelski played on a line with Robertson and served as the billet family for Johnston. So while both players were dealing with a lack of preparation because of physical limitations, they also had to find a way to step up with one of their leaders gone. In the past 17 games, Robertson has 23 points (10 goals, 13 assists) and Johnston has 20 points (5 goals, 15 assists).

That’s a big reason for the power play success, and also a big reason Dallas is tops in the league in that span at 12-4-1.

“We knew that eventually we would break out of it,” Robertson said. “We talk about it, but you have to put the work in. There is confidence there. I think the new year helped. Everyone turned the page, and we have been better. I’m sure we’re going to have another tough moment, but we know we can recover from it.”

DeBoer said the mental aspect is real, and that individuals can help each other.

“Confidence is such a big part of the game, particularly in some of those areas,” DeBoer said. “Those are things we manage on a daily basis.”

And while urgency is a real part of the human condition, so is calm.

“I think patience is a big part of it…and knowing the group,” DeBoer said of how the coaches handle adversity. “It’s not my first year with the group, so I know what they’re capable of. I know the personnel. I think that allows you to have a little more patience.”

That said, there are a lot of new faces, and a lot of new issues. In recent games, rookie Lian Bichsel has been paired with veteran Dumba on defense, while veteran defenseman Brendan Smith has been moved to forward. All three are new additions to the roster.

That’s part of the new guys learning from the old guys.

“With key personnel out, the fact we haven’t lost three in a row, the fact we’ve been able to stop the bleeding…a big part of that is leadership,” DeBoer said.

Losing Pavelski hurts in that area too, but captain Benn has stepped up, and so have players like Esa Lindell, Heiskanen, Duchene and Hintz.

“What I’ve been really impressed with is our leadership,” DeBoer said. “What we’ve been through in the first three months, there’s been a lot of adversity with our road record and power play, those things could have easily gone off the rails if you don’t have great leadership to stay the course and keep messaging what the coaches are messaging.”
