PETA suggests ‘weather reveal’ cake for Groundhog Day to retire Punxsutawney Phil

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (TNND) — PETA suggested that Groundhog Day be celebrated with a “weather reveal” cake instead of pulling Punxsutawney Phil out of his whole to determine six more weeks of winter or if spring will arrive early.

The organization, which stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, shared their idea in a news release on Jan. 21 saying they would deliver a vegan cake each Groundhog Day if club president Tom Dunkel agreed to let Phil retire to a sanctuary.

“If the inside of the cake is blue, there will be six more weeks of winter. If it’s pink, there will be an early spring,” PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said in her letter to Dunkel. “This would allow you to still make tourism dough while showing Phil a slice of decency. It would be as least as accurate as asking a groundhog what to expect in a way that doesn’t even reflect his nature.”

Newkirk went on to point out that groundhogs are shy prey animals who actively avoid humans when allowed and called out the Groundhog Club for subjecting Phil “to a noisy announcer, screaming crowds, and flashing lights against all his natural instincts.”

It isn’t the first year PETA has attempted to retire Punxsutawney Phil.

In 2024, the group offered to replace the groundhog with a giant gold coin, while in 2022 they suggested officials predict the weather with persimmon seeds.

The annual Groundhog Day celebration is scheduled to take place in Pennsylvania on Feb. 2.

Phil predicted an early spring in 2024 after not seeing his shadow.

PETA is calling for a change to Groundhog Day.

The vegan treat, PETA said, would mimic that of a sex reveal for a baby. Once cut, the cake would show one of two colors: blue, meaning six more weeks of winter, or pink, indicating an early spring.

The animal rights advocates added that Punxsutawney Phil and his family should “retire to a reputable sanctuary” instead of taking part in the annual tradition, which takes place on Feb. 2.

In a letter to The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s president, Tom Dunkel, PETA President Ingrid Newkirk used puns to convey the organization’s plea, writing that letting Punxsutawney Phil retire and be replaced by the cake “would allow you to still make tourism dough while showing Phil a slice of decency.”

Continuing the play on words, Newkirk said, “Groundhog Day is no piece of cake” for Punxsutawney Phil, detailing that “groundhogs are shy prey animals who, when allowed, actively avoid humans.”

“Yet, year after year, Phil is transported to Gobler’s Knob, whisked on stage, and subjected to a noisy announcer, screaming crowds, and flashing lights against all his natural instincts,” she continued.

Added Newkirk: “If approached in his natural habitat, he would run away in fear, not volunteer to live year-round in captivity, unable to do anything that’s natural and important to him like hibernate or burrow — just to be a town’s once-a-year fake meteorologist.”

PETA has made similar offers to replace Punxsutawney Phil in years past.

In 2024, the group asked The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club to retire the rodent in favor of a giant coin, while they suggested in 2022 that officials instead use a persimmon tree to predict the weather.

Two years earlier, in 2020, PETA argued that the animal should be swapped out for an animatronic version that would be equipped with artificial intelligence capable of more accurately predicting the weather.

Newsweek emailed a spokesperson for Phillips for comment on Thursday.

“I got stopped at the border, so that was, that was intense. We got stopped for, like, two hours … they were like, ‘we heard you’re here to f*** a thousand guys,'” Phillips claimed, before saying border patrol brought up her account on PornHub.

“I don’t think they quite recognize[d] me but my stage name is the exact same as my porn name so it’s, like, I guess you can just like search it up and s*** like that.”

“Wait, so it’s not your real name?” host Bradley Martyn asked, to which Phillips clarified: “No, no, that is my real name, sorry … I guess they might have, like, a database or something that they search up or something like that ’cause they were like, ‘What do you do for work?'”

Martyn questioned if border patrol knew what Phillips was on her way to do, to which she said: “I don’t know, well, that’s what they pulled me up for but I was like, it’s not illegal to have sex with a thousand guys.

Martyn added: “No, it’s just insane, it’s insane.”

A source close to Phillips told Newsweek that the OnlyFans star was concerned she’d be deported, after a friend told her that filming herself having sex with 1,000 men in America would be considered work, meaning she’d need a work visa.

Phillips also shared these concerns during an appearance on the Plug Talk podcast.

“I was meant to do it here [America], but I got quite a lot of advice saying, ‘you will be deported if you do it here,'” she told the hosts.

Phillips also went into further detail about her experience of being stopped by customs officers and grilled about her career.

“They were asking if I was a prostitute and stuff like that,” she said.

“I was very much, like, ‘yeah, I f*** all these guys but they don’t pay a penny, so it’s not prostitution. I just f*** a lot of guys!”

Phillips went viral after she starred in the YouTube documentary, I Slept With 100 Men in One Day, which offers a behind-the-scenes look at the challenge Phillips set herself, filmed by YouTuber Josh Pieters.

While Phillips shared her excitement for the stunt in a positive light, the documentary reveals how emotional she was after the event. Originally shot in October, clips shared online show Pieters documenting the aftermath of the session, with Phillips emerging from a bedroom in tears.

“When I decided to start making this documentary, I wasn’t too sure what to expect. I certainly didn’t expect to see Lily so upset at the end of it all,” Pieters said in the documentary.

Visibly sobbing, Phillips told Pieters: “Sometimes, you just disassociate, it’s not like normal sex at all.

“In my head, I can think of five, six guys, 10 guys that I remember. And that’s it. It’s just weird, isn’t it? If I didn’t have the videos, I wouldn’t have known that I’d done a hundred.”

The controversial documentary has stunned people online. Phillips is part of the shock-mining trend of taking part in outrageous stunts for attention and followers, alongside fellow adult content creator Bonnie Blue.

First day as a Scuderia Ferrari HP driver for Lewis

Lewis Hamilton’s Scuderia Ferrari HP adventure is now underway. Early this morning, the seven-time world champion arrived at the team’s Maranello headquarters at via Enzo Ferrari 27. From there he went to the Fiorano track where, against the backdrop of Enzo Ferrari’s house, in the small square now named after the only other seven-time Formula 1 world champion, Michael Schumacher, he was met by Team Principal, Fred Vasseur and Ferrari CEO, Benedetto Vigna. The traditional “first day” photos were taken there and even the weather helped to make Lewis feel at home, with some typically British overcast skies and drizzle. Also on hand was a Ferrari F40, Lewis’ favourite supercar.

Meetings and total immersion. Next on Lewis’ agenda was a short visit to the Fiorano house and the pit garage, with Vasseur and Vigna, including a look at the famous office, from where Enzo Ferrari would watch his team at work. Hamilton then returned to the Scuderia HQ, where he met the management team and Piero Ferrari, before embarking on a daylong total immersion programme, visiting all the various departments to get to know the team. The work continues tomorrow with more technical meetings and briefings as preparations get underway for what will be a very busy season.

There are some days that you know you’ll remember forever and today, my first as a Scuderia Ferrari HP driver, is one of those days. I’ve been lucky enough to have achieved things in my career I never thought possible, but part of me has always held on to that dream of racing in red. I couldn’t be happier to realise that dream today. 

I’m incredibly grateful to John Elkann, Benedetto Vigna, Fred Vasseur and everyone at Ferrari for their trust in me and making me part of this family. I’m so excited to start this new era and to meet and work with a hugely talented and inspiring group of people. Công ty khởi nghiệp Trung Quốc DeepSeek ngày 20/1 công bố mô hình V3 miễn phí và R1 “được đào tạo trên chip kém tiên tiến của Nvidia, mã nguồn mở 100%, rẻ hơn 96,4% so với OpenAI o1 trong khi mang lại hiệu suất tương tự”. Điều này đã gây ra sự hoảng loạn trong các công ty công nghệ Mỹ và trên thị trường chứng khoán, đồng thời thu hút sự chú ý vào người đứng sau DeepSeek.

Truyền thông Trung Quốc cho biết startup AI này đặt trụ sở tại thành phố Hàng Châu. Cổ đông nắm quyền kiểm soát công ty là Liang Wenfeng, 40 tuổi, tốt nghiệp chuyên ngành về AI tại Đại học Chiết Giang.

Ông đồng sáng lập quỹ đầu cơ định lượng High-Flyer vào năm 2015, nổi tiếng nhờ sự sáng tạo trong ứng dụng các chiến lược giao dịch dựa trên nền tảng AI. Hồi năm 2023, High-Flyer Quant tuyên bố tập trung vào xây dựng chi nhánh chuyên biệt để nghiên cứu về siêu trí tuệ nhân tạo AGI. Quỹ cũng sở hữu nhiều bằng sáng chế liên quan đến các cụm chip được dùng để huấn luyện mô hình AI.

Liang được cho là đã bắt đầu mua hàng nghìn chip đồ họa Nvidia từ năm 2021 để phục vụ dự án AI, trước khi chính quyền của cựu tổng thống Mỹ Joe Biden áp hạn chế xuất khẩu sang Trung Quốc. Bộ phận AI của High-Flyer năm 2022 tuyên bố đã sở hữu và vận hành khoảng 10.000 chip Nvidia A100.

Trong phỏng vấn hồi tháng 7/2024, Liang tiết lộ tham vọng đối với DeepSeek và chiến lược AI tổng thể của Trung Quốc. “Các doanh nghiệp Trung Quốc suốt nhiều năm quen dùng các sáng tạo công nghệ phát triển ở nước ngoài và kiếm tiền bằng ứng dụng dựa vào chúng. Điều này không bền vững. Mục tiêu của chúng tôi không phải kiếm lời nhanh chóng, mà mở rộng ranh giới công nghệ để thúc đẩy phát triển hệ sinh thái”, ông nói.

Một trong những đối tác kinh doanh của Liang kể với FT: “Lần đầu tiên chúng tôi gặp, cậu ấy giống anh chàng rất mọt sách với kiểu tóc khủng khiếp và nói về việc xây dựng cụm 10.000 chip để đào tạo mô hình của riêng mình. Chúng tôi không để tâm lắm. Cậu ấy không thể diễn đạt được tầm nhìn của mình ngoài việc nói: Tôi muốn tạo dựng điều này và nó sẽ là một thay đổi lớn. Chúng tôi nghĩ những thứ như thế chỉ có thể thực hiện được bởi những gã khổng lồ như ByteDance và Alibaba”.

Giới lãnh đạo Trung Quốc cũng đang chú ý đến DeepSeek. Trước khi mô hình R1 ra mắt, Liang được mời tham gia hội thảo kín của các doanh nghiệp trong ngành, do Thủ tướng Trung Quốc Lý Cường chủ trì ngày 20/1.

Giới chuyên gia nhận định DeepSeek hiện chưa có nguy cơ bị chính phủ Mỹ áp đặt lệnh cấm. “Họ cũng chưa tung ra bản thương mại hoặc phương án tính phí, nên không chịu tác động trực tiếp về tài chính nếu bị Mỹ hạn chế. Họ \ chưa nhận đầu tư từ bên ngoài, tất cả ngân sách đều lấy từ quỹ đầu cơ của nhà sáng lập, nên cũng không có áp lực để cổ đông thoái vốn”, nhà phân tích Phelix Lee của Morningstar cho hay.

DeepSeek dùng mã nguồn mở, nên kịch bản khả thi nhất là các công ty Mỹ có thể dùng bộ mã công khai của doanh nghiệp Trung Quốc để hoàn thiện mô hình do chính mình phát triển. “Điều này có thể giúp giảm chi phí tính toán AI toàn cầu”, ông Lee nói thêm.
