Cast members of ‘Groundhog Day’ reunite for Chicago celebration – NBC Chicago
In Chicago, Groundhog Day doesn’t just come with a spring prediction from Woodstock Willie or Chicago Harry — it also comes with the honoring of a famous movie, over, and over, and over again.
You may have heard of it: the cult classic movie 1993 Groundhog Day, directed by Chicago native Harold Ramis, starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell, was filmed in none other than the suburb of Woodstock, Illinois.
Sunday, on Groundhog Day itself, Harry Caray’s Tavern at Navy Pier will honor the movie and late director, with the “2nd annual Harold Ramis Day” and a celebration of the film through themed movie food, movie memorabilia, actor appearances and of course, a groundhog.
Every February, a furry animal tells Americans how long winter will last, but do you know why? NBC Chicago meteorologist Kevin Jeanes explains.
“Harry Caray’s Tavern will transform into a fully immersive Groundhog Day experience, featuring food and beverages inspired by Groundhog Day’s Tip Top Café.” a release said. “Several artifacts from Harold’s storied career will be on display, including the Armani coat Bill Murray wore in Groundhog Day, the jumpsuits worn by Harold Ramis and Bill Murray in Ghostbusters, and several of Harold’s leather-bound shooting scripts, including Groundhog Day.”
The celebration begins at 3 p.m. Sunday, organizers said, when fan-favorite film character “Ned Ryerson,” played by Stephen Tobolowsky will lead a special Groundhog Day ceremony, during which Chicago Harry — a live groundhog — will emerge from his tree stump to reveal what the forecast holds.
Upon his emergence, everyone will wait with bated breath to see if Chicago Harry sees his shadow. If he does, legend has it there will be six more weeks of winter. But if not, spring comes early.
“He put up a little bit of a fight last year,” said well see if he’s feeling frisky this year,” Danielle Borisy director of marketing at Harry Caray’s told NBC Chicago.
Other special guests from the movie set to attend the event are Peggy Roeder, who plays the piano teacher, and Richard Henzel, who plays the DJ.
More information about the Sunday event can be found here.
The beloved cast members of the iconic movie ‘Groundhog Day’ reunited for a special celebration in Chicago over the weekend. The event was held in honor of the film’s 25th anniversary and brought together stars such as Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell, and Chris Elliott.Fans were thrilled to see the cast members together again, reminiscing about the making of the classic comedy and sharing behind-the-scenes stories. The event also featured a screening of the movie, followed by a Q&A session with the cast.
The reunion was a nostalgic trip down memory lane for both the cast and fans, who continue to cherish ‘Groundhog Day’ as a timeless classic. The film, which follows a weatherman who finds himself stuck in a time loop, has remained a favorite among audiences since its release in 1993.
Overall, the Chicago celebration was a heartwarming gathering that reminded everyone of the enduring magic of ‘Groundhog Day’ and the talented actors who brought it to life.

Punxsutawney Phil isn’t the only weather-predicting groundhog that enjoys a day of public spotlight. In northern Ohio, a ground-dweller by the name of Buckeye Chuck has made his call: Spring is coming.
Ohio’s weather-predicting groundhog issued a proclamation Sunday morning, declaring that an early spring is on the way.
Buckeye Chuck may make the official weather prediction in Ohio, but he is far from the only groundhog known for his forecast on Groundhog Day, celebrated every Feb. 2. There’s also General Beauregard Lee in Georgia and Staten Island Chuck in New York. And there’s no forgetting Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania.
Here’s what to know about Buckeye Chuck’s Groundhog Day forecast and how to watch.
Did Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow? What to know about the groundhog’s prediction
When will Buckeye Chuck make his 2025 prediction?
Buckeye Chuck gave his forecast between 7-8 a.m. EST on Sunday.
How to watch and listen to Buckeye Chuck’s 2025 Groundhog Day forecast
Buckeye Chuck’s prediction was livestreamed on his Facebook Page. Radio station 1490 WMRN-AM, based in Marion, Ohio, also aired the forecast live − available on the iHeart mobile app.
Who is Buckeye Chuck?
Buckeye Chuck is Ohio’s official weather-predicting groundhog, part of an event hosted by radio station WMRN. He began making predictions in the 1970s and was declared the official State Groundhog by the Ohio General Assembly in 1979.
Last year, Murray, a whistle pig, made his debut as the new “Buckeye Chuck.” He resides at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
In 2023, for the first year, a stuffed groundhog was used to represent Buckeye Chuck. This occurred after complaints were filed by PETA that WMRN used Kokas Exotics, an exotic animal breeder, to supply a live groundhog for each year’s event. PETA claimed that the breeder was only licensed to breed and sell animals, not exhibit them.
What did Buckeye Chuck predict in 2024?
Last year, Buckeye Chuck did not see his shadow, indicating that spring was right around the corner.
Why do we celebrate Groundhog Day?
Groundhog Day is celebrated every Feb. 2, the same day as Candlemas, in which some of the holiday’s traditions originate.
A Christian festival, Candlemas, also known as the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus Christ, is celebrated each Feb. 2, 40 days after Christmas. For centuries, Europeans developed different customs associated with the festival, which is the halfway point between the Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox, according to St. Blase Catholic Church. One of these customs was tied to the weather: the weather on Candlemas would determine the outcome of the remainder of winter. And throughout much of Europe, this custom was associated with animals like bears, badgers and hedgehogs that were beginning to wake from winter hibernation.
When German immigrants arrived to America, they found the groundhog in Pennsylvania, which reminded them of the hedgehog in their home country, according to St. Blase Catholic Church. And thus, this is how the groundhog was given such an important responsibility each year.

Groundhog Day: Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, predicts six more weeks of winter
CNN
—
Punxsutawney Phil, the famous groundhog weather watcher, was pulled from his warm burrow this morning and saw his shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter.
Each February 2, on Groundhog Day, the members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club make the pilgrimage to Gobbler’s Knob — Phil’s official home. Legend has it, if he sees his shadow, six more weeks of winter are on the way. If he doesn’t, an early spring arrives.
In reality, winter will end on the spring equinox, known also as the vernal equinox, on March 20 at 5:01 a.m. ET, regardless of Sunday’s prediction. But weather conditions don’t always follow the timetable — and neither does Phil.
Phil has been prognosticating since the late 1800s but his recent predictions would have a better track record if he just flipped a coin: He has only been right about 35% of the time since 2005, according to data analyzed by NOAA.
Phil’s call for an early spring last year came true. February 2024 was the third warmest on record for the Lower 48. March also ended up much warmer than normal, according to NOAA data.
There are more consistent experts to turn to when Phil falters.
Meteorologists at the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center produce forecasts for temperatures and precipitation across the US on timescales ranging from one week to more than a year.
Their outlook for February calls for above-average temperatures, or a potential early spring, from parts of the Rockies through the South and much of the East. Below-average temperatures from the Pacific Northwest into parts of the Midwest could be an extended winter. These regional trends are likely to continue into early spring, the center’s forecasts through April show.
Rounds of brutal cold have pounded the eastern half of the US all winter.
It was the coldest Presidential Inauguration in 40 years and cold unusually far south ushered in a historic snowstorm for the Gulf Coast. It’s been one of the 10-coldest winters for dozens of cities east of the Mississippi River, according to the Southeast Regional Climate Center.
But the West has remained warm this winter following the warmest fall on record for the Lower 48. Phoenix, Las Vegas and San Francisco are just a few cities experiencing one of their 10-warmest winters.
Warmer winters aren’t a fluke, even when punctuated with seasonably appropriate cold. Winter has become the fastest-warming season for nearly 75% of the US as temperatures rise globally in a world warming due to fossil fuel pollution.
So, Phil’s prediction of six more weeks of winter is a bad bet in a warming world.
Each year on February 2nd, all eyes turn to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, as the world’s most famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, emerges from his burrow to predict the weather for the upcoming weeks. This morning, Phil saw his shadow, signaling six more weeks of winter.According to folklore, if Phil sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather. If he doesn’t see his shadow, then spring will come early. This tradition dates back to the 1800s and continues to captivate audiences around the world.
While some may be disappointed by Phil’s prediction of extended winter weather, others embrace the opportunity to enjoy winter activities for a little while longer. Whether you’re a fan of snow or longing for warmer days, Punxsutawney Phil’s forecast serves as a fun and lighthearted reminder of the changing seasons.
As we settle in for a few more weeks of winter, let’s make the most of it by bundling up, sipping hot cocoa, and embracing the beauty of the season. Spring will be here before we know it, but in the meantime, let’s enjoy the cozy moments that winter has to offer.

Georgia Groundhog Day General Beauregard Lee prediction live stream
According to NOAA, Georgia’s own groundhog is much more accurate than the famed Punxsutawney Phil.
JACKSON, Georgia — Georgia’s own — some might say more accurate — meteorological groundhog has made his call for Groundhog Day, and it may not quite be what everyone was hoping.
It’s six more weeks of winter, according to General Beauregard Lee (“Beau” for short).
According to NOAA tracking, Beau is actually much more accurate than his famed northern counterpart Punxsutawney Phil. Beau’s accuracy sits at 80%.
On Sunday morning, Beau emerged at the Dauset Trails Nature Center in Jackson and saw his shadow, foretelling six more weeks of winter. Last year, Beau declared an early spring.
“Don’t kill the messenger!” Beau’s handlers joked Sunday.
The folks at Dauset Trails read a proclamation from Beau that said in part:
“I love pool parties and swimming and getting a tan, but I also love ice fishing, hot chocolate and making a snowman. We’ve had snow from here to the beach, it’s been an interesting winter for this Georgia peach… I know you’re ready for warmth and cheer, but you’ve got to hang on just a little longer my dear. I’m not joking, or kidding, or making a bluff — six more weeks of the wintry stuff. This prediction I make with my little paw — six more weeks of winter, for my shadow I saw.”
This now is where we caution that meteorologists are always more accurate than groundhogs. Groundhog Day should be used for entertainment purposes only.
More about General Beauregard Lee
General Beauregard Lee lived at the Yellow River Game Ranch in Gwinnett County for more than 25 years until the ranch suddenly shut down in 2017.
Dauset Trails Director, Ike English told 11Alive sister station WMAZ back in 2020 that Waffle House hash browns and Indian Springs water is what has kept the south’s “Doctor of Southern Groundology” predicting the weather for 39 years.
Beau used to live in Gwinnett County at the Yellow River Game Ranch, where he stayed more than 25 years before that ranch suddenly shut down in 2017.
His name is drawn from Confederate history — in reference to Generals P.G.T. Beauregard and Robert E. Lee.
Join us for the live stream of Georgia’s very own groundhog, General Beauregard Lee, as he makes his prediction for the upcoming weather on Groundhog Day! Will we have six more weeks of winter or an early spring? Tune in to find out and join in on the festivities as we celebrate this annual tradition in Georgia. Groundhog Day in Ohio | 10tv.com
Marion’s famous groundhog will determine whether we’ll have an early spring or six more weeks of winter.
MARION, Ohio — Marion’s famous groundhog, Buckeye Chuck, will soon make his prediction on whether we will have an early spring or a late winter this year.
Punxsutawney Phil is also set to make his prediction Sunday morning.
The tradition has been ongoing in the country since 1887 when the residents of Punxsutawney watched Phil, the weather-forecasting groundhog, venture out of Gobbler’s Knob.
As part of Ohio’s tradition, Buckeye Chuck visits WMRN AM radio station every Feb. 2. This year, the event will be held at the Marion County Fairgrounds. Event organizers say he will make his prediction around 7:45 a.m.
Where did the tradition begin?
Groundhog Day dates back to a pre-Christian Celtic celebration called “Imbolc” which took place between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, according to the Library of Congress.
People believed that a mythological hag or goddess, Cailleach, associated with storms would predict the end of winter or continuation by what the weather was like that day.
If it was bright and sunny, winter would go on. If the weather was foul, winter was over.
This event was later transformed into Candlemas Day which was when clergy would bless and distribute candles. A bright Candlemas day equated to a long winter season.
From then on, people believed February was important in weather prognostication.
Germans added to the old weather belief by using a badger to predict the weather. If it was sunny, the badger would cast a shadow that meant six more weeks of winter.
After many Germans immigrated to Pennsylvania, a groundhog, native to North America, replaced the badger.

#Groundhog #Day #Ohio #10tv.comHow accurate are Groundhog Day predictions? Punxsutawney Phil accuracy insights
Even though Punxsutawney Phil has made predictions for more than 100 years, his track record certainly isn’t perfect.
WASHINGTON — Punxsutawney Phil will soon predict either six more weeks of winter or an early spring for 2025, but just how accurate are his yearly forecasts?
The annual ceremony in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, dates back to 1887, according to the Library of Congress. But even with more than 100 years of “forecasting experience,” Punxsutawney Phil certainly isn’t perfect.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration compared Punxsutawney Phil’s forecast to the national weather the last 10 years and found “on average, Phil has gotten it right 30% of the time.” Over the last 20 years, NOAA found Phil was 35% correct – but still a lot less accurate than some of his groundhog competitors.
Going back all the way to his first prediction in 1887, he’s been right only a slightly better (but still worse than a coin flip) 39% of the time, according to an analysis from Stormfax Weather Almanac.
When is Groundhog Day 2025?
During the annual celebration, people gather at Gobbler’s Knob as members of Phil’s “inner circle” summon the groundhog from his tree stump at dawn to learn if he has seen his shadow.
Groundhog Day always falls on Feb. 2. This year, Groundhog Day falls on a Sunday.
According to folklore, if he sees his shadow there will be six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t, spring comes early.
How many times has Punxsutawney Phil seen his shadow?
Since 1887, Punxsutawney Phil’s track record has leaned heavily toward six more weeks of winter.
In fact, arguably the world’s most famous groundhog has predicted an early spring (by not seeing his shadow) just 21 times, including last year, according to the numbers announced by the Groundhog Day “Inner Circle.”
Meanwhile, he’s seen his shadow 109 times (including 2023), though there are 10 years where there’s no record of what happened.
Prior to 2024, the last time Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow was in 2020, and before that in 2019, offering a back-to-back dose of his rare early spring prediction.
Will we get another back-to-back early spring prediction this year? Tune in on Sunday to find out.
The Associated Press and WKYC’s Ryan Haidet contributed to this report.
Every year on February 2nd, all eyes turn to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, as people eagerly await the prediction of Punxsutawney Phil, the famous groundhog. According to folklore, if Phil sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If not, spring will come early. But just how accurate are Phil’s predictions? Well, according to the Groundhog Club, Phil has only been right about 39% of the time since 1887. That’s not exactly a stellar track record.
Some experts argue that Phil’s predictions are simply a result of chance and that there is no scientific basis for them. Others believe that Phil’s behavior is influenced by factors such as temperature, cloud cover, and time of day, rather than any innate ability to predict the weather.
Regardless of whether you believe in Punxsutawney Phil’s forecasting abilities, one thing is for sure – Groundhog Day is a fun tradition that brings communities together and adds a bit of whimsy to the winter season. So whether Phil sees his shadow or not, let’s all enjoy the festivities and keep our fingers crossed for an early spring!

Groundhog Day history
Big picture view:
Groundhog Day traces its roots to ancient Celtic traditions, where Imbolc marked the midway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. Early Christians celebrated Candlemas around the same time, and German immigrants brought the custom of weather-forecasting animals to America, swapping European hedgehogs and badgers for the native groundhog.
Pennsylvania’s Punxsutawney Phil has been at it since 1887, but Georgia’s Beau gives him a run for his money — especially in the accuracy department.
Which groundhog is more accurate?
By the numbers:
According to a 2022 study by FiveThirtyEight.com, Beau boasts a 63% accuracy rate for predictions from 2012 to 2021, outshining Phil’s 45.5%. The Dauset Trails Nature Center claims Beau’s accuracy is even higher, somewhere in the 90% range.
Last year, both Phil and Beau predicted an early spring.

Don’t put away those snow shovels just yet!
The world-famous prognosticating groundhog Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow when he emerged from his den in western Pennsylvania early Sunday, meaning six more weeks of winter, according to the beloved and age-old 132-year-old folklore.
If Pennsylvania’s fluffy meteorologist hadn’t seen his shadow, it could have meant Spring was near.
Phil previously predicted an early spring last year in 2024, as pictured here. AP Groundhog Club handler A.J. Dereume holds Punxsutawney Phil during the 138th celebration of Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney, Pa. on Feb. 2, 2024. AP Sunday marked Phil’s first Groundhog Day as a father.
In March 2024, Phil and his groundhog wife Phyliss gave birth to two healthy babies, who were later named Sunny and Shadow.
Before Phil was woken up, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro taunted PETA’s petition to replace the beloved groundhog with a ‘weather reveal’ vegan cake.
The animal rights organization sent a letter to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club offering the vegan treat in exchange for Phil and his family to retire to a “reputable sanctuary.”
“Some folks out there who say we should take this great tradition and get rid of Phil and replace him with a cake, that’s their crazy idea,” Shapiro said Sunday. “Hear me on this Punxsawtawney, if anybody comes for Phil, they’re gonna have to come through me and all of you am I right.”
While the tradition attracts over 40,000 people to the small town of Gobbler’s Knob each year, the weather-predicting groundhog hasn’t been as accurate as the legend expects him to be.
The furry prognosticator has only accurately predicted the change in seasons about 35% of the time over the past 20 years, according to an NOAA study.
The annual ritual dates back to 1887, according to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.
It originates in the Feb. 2 holiday of Candlemas in Europe, where Christians would take candles to a church to have them blessed.
A popular English folk song declared that winter would have “another flight” if conditions on Candlemas were fair and bright.
The song’s interpretation of the holiday became accepted throughout most of Europe until it reached Germany, where a hedgehog became part of the tradition. If the animal saw its shadow on Candlemas, a “second winter” was expected.
The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club says the tradition began in 1887. AP “As German settlers came to what is now the United States, so too came their traditions and folklore,” Punxsutawney organizers said on its website.
“With the absence of hedgehogs in the United States, a similar hibernating animal was chosen.”
A mention of Groundhog Day first appeared in a local Punxsutawney newspaper in 1886, and the following year marked the first official event at Gobbler’s Knob, organizers said.
But while Punxsutawney Phil is the most famous, he’s not the only groundhog foretelling the year’s weather forecast.
New York’s own Staten Island Chuck is the most reliable and has accurately predicted the arrival of spring 85% of the time over the last 20 years, according to NOAA.
Georgia’s General Beauregard Lee is another contender for the cutest meteorologist, who has been right with an impressive 80% over the last two decades.
As for Phil, he is not even in the top 10, ranking 17th place.
Attention, residents of Pennsylvania! Punxsutawney Phil has emerged from his burrow on this Groundhog Day to deliver his highly anticipated weather report. According to the famous groundhog, he did not see his shadow, which means we can expect an early spring this year.So put away those winter coats and break out the sunglasses, because Phil has spoken! Let’s hope his prediction holds true and we can enjoy warmer weather sooner rather than later. Happy Groundhog Day, everyone! #PunxsutawneyPhil #GroundhogDay #EarlySpring
