The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning from 9 p.m. Tuesday until 9 a.m. Thursday because of an expected life-threatening temperature drop and the threat of sub-zero wind chills.
The cold is coming from an Arctic cold front that will arrive Tuesday, and there is a chance for wintry precipitation.
The NWS warns of dangerously cold wind chills that could result in hypothermia or frostbite on exposed skin if precautions are not taken. The weather service recommends people dress in layers, including a hat, face mask, and gloves when going outside. Keep pets indoors as much as possible. Make sure outdoor animals have a warm, dry shelter, food, and unfrozen water. Make frequent checks on vulnerable family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills inside.
Scattered rain showers will develop on Tuesday as the front approaches the region. While most of the precip falls when temperatures are still above freezing, there will be a window of time late Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday evening when we could see a changeover to freezing rain and/or freezing drizzle.
Slick conditions may develop, especially on bridges, ramps and overpasses.
The coldest air of the winter will arrive in Texas during the day on Tuesday and last through Thursday. Low temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday mornings will be in the teens, with wind chills near zero or below that.
This will be pipe-freezing cold and you should be prepared for the frigid conditions.
COLD WEATHER PREPARATION
Winterizing Your Home Before the cold, replace worn weatherstripping on doors and windows to ensure a good seal. This will make sure warm air stays inside and cold air stays outside. Most modern windows are sealed inside the frame, but older windows may be sealed with a glaze that can crack and need replacing. The glaze may need to be applied above a certain temperature and it’ll need time to cure — this maintenance is ideally done in the spring or fall. Lastly, check your gutters to ensure they are clear and allow water to flow freely to the downspout. Blocked gutters can lead to water entering the home. The Texas Department of Insurance also recommends trimming trees away from power lines, homes, and cars and checking the insulation level in attics.
Protecting Your Pipes Most North Texans know to insulate their outdoor faucets, but if the cold snap is prolonged it could be a good idea to also leave inside faucets on external walls dripping overnight so that they don’t freeze. The drip, drip, drip from running faucets, if heard, can be annoying, so put a sponge or towel in the sink to silently catch each drop. If you’re leaving town for a few days, the Texas Department of Insurance recommends leaving cabinet doors open so that pipes on external walls are more exposed to heat. If you have pipes in an attic or crawlspace or any other exposed pipes outdoors, they’ll need insulation, too. For external faucets, disconnect hoses and insulate the valves. Wrapping valves with towels is not the best long-term solution. Most, if not all, North Texas hardware stores sell inexpensive exterior faucet covers made of foam that easily attach to the faucet bib in just a few seconds and do a great job protecting the pipe from freezing. If you suspect a pipe has frozen, keep the faucet open so that water can flow when it melts. Additionally, make sure you know where your main water valve is located (and how to turn it off) in the event a pipe bursts.
Bring in Your Pets Even if you have a pet or animal that normally lives or sleeps outdoors, they could be susceptible to cold, hypothermia, and pneumonia. The SPCA of Texas says if you’re cold outside, odds are your pet is cold too. Bring pets inside and make sure other outdoor animals have appropriate shelter, dry and well insulated, to protect them from frigid temperatures and possible death.
Protecting Your Plants Perennial potted plants should be brought indoors. Plants that cannot be brought inside will need to be covered. Delicate plants can be covered with sheets, blankets, or landscaping frost blankets, which can trap heat. During times of extreme cold, multiple frost blankets may be used. For plants left outside a day or two before a freeze hits, the Dallas Arboretum recommends watering the soil only by hand, keeping the foliage dry to insulate the plant’s roots. The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension has more here on how to protect plants from frosts and freezes. AgriLife also has tips on how to plant for the winter.
Dallas Arboretum
Turn Off Your Sprinkler System You want to turn off your irrigation system for several reasons. One is that you don’t want it running on its normal schedule, potentially throwing water on streets where it can freeze and be dangerous for passing cars. Second, you don’t want to risk any broken pipes or valves that may come with a system that has not been winterized. To winterize your system, the city of Fort Worth recommends that timers and back-flow devices both be turned off, even if you have freeze or rain sensors installed and that the main line be drained. Any pipes that are above the ground should also be insulated.
HVAC Many air filters should be changed or cleaned every three months or every season. But that’s not the only winterizing needed for your HVAC system. You should check your ductwork regularly for holes (whether from vibration or rodents) to ensure the airflow is uninterrupted. If part of your HVAC is in the attic, it may also be home to rats, mice, and squirrels who find the unit’s warmth an ideal spot to build a nest.
Swimming Pools Even if you have a freeze protector among your pool equipment, you’ll want to look at the pump daily to ensure it’s moving water through your pipes. Those pipes, too, can burst if they freeze.
Batteries Having fresh batteries for flashlights during a power outage is always a good idea. If you didn’t replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors during daylight saving time — now is a good time to make the switch. It’s also a good idea to ensure your phone is charged so that you’ll have access to timely information in the event of a power loss. Having a backup battery or power source to recharge your phone is also a good idea.

A milestone countdown begins for Epic Universe this week. We’re 100 days away from the opening of Orlando’s first new theme park in a generation.
It’s a fine time to reboot and enroll in Epic 101, a course that reviews what we know and what we don’t know about Universal Orlando’s expansion, which Mark Woodbury, CEO of Universal Destinations & Experiences, has referred to as “the most technologically advanced park we’ve ever done.”
The park was announced at Orange County Convention Center in 2019. Universal has shared details along the way about its rides, shows and hotels, but burning questions remain.
When and where
Epic Universe is under construction between Sand Lake Road and Universal Boulevard, just north of the convention center. That’s about 2.5 miles southeast of Universal Orlando’s existing theme parks, Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, as well as Volcano Bay water park and Universal CityWalk. Epic is on “the other side” of Interstate 4.
Universal will run buses between its original parks and hotels and the Epic area. There will be open-air parking available near Epic for visitors only going to the new park.
The grand opening of Epic Universe is scheduled for May 22, the Thursday before Memorial Day.
The theme team
Epic Universe will be divided into five lands. Visitors will enter through Celestial Park, which includes a coaster and a carousel. Other lands are Super Nintendo World, How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic and Dark Universe, which features classic monsters such as the Creature From the Black Lagoon, the Mummy and brides of Dracula.
Alicia Stella, owner of Orlando ParkStop website, has been monitoring the park since before construction began. Some people are confused by the “five immersive worlds” push, she said, thinking that means five parks — and five tickets.
It doesn’t. The rounded gateways, which Universal calls “portals,” are the walkways from Celestial Park to the other four lands, which are all part of Epic.
“People think all of the worlds are individual theme parks because they have their own portal entrance and because they’re being advertised in individual commercials,” Stella said. “It’s like ‘Do I need a ticket for each world?’”
The portal layout, which will funnel Epic crowds into lands, concerns Tharin White, lead producer of EYNTK.info, an Orlando-based travel website.
“I don’t know what happens when you have to go through a single portal to get into Super Nintendo World, to then go into a second single portal to head into the Donkey Kong Country,” he said. “To me, that just sounds like bottleneck after bottleneck after bottleneck.”
Construction continues on Epic Universe theme park, which is scheduled to open May 22. The attraction will be a few miles southeast of the other two Universal Orlando park, near Orange County Convention Center. (@bioreconstruct)
Big rides on way
Yes. There will be four roller coasters across Epic. Mine-Cart Madness, in the Donkey Kong Country subsection of Super Nintendo World, already has a talking point: A moment where the car appears to leap over a gap in its broken rail.
Hiccup’s Wing Gliders will fly over Isle of Berk; Curse of the Werewolf will be a coaster with spinning cars in Dark Universe; and Stardust Racers, operating in Celestial Park, will be a dual-launch racing ride.
Wizarding World won’t have a coaster, but it will feature Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, a ride that follows the trial (and escape) of Dolores Umbridge, a cruel character from the Potterverse.
Dark Universe will have big thrill ride. Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment will boast more than a dozen animatronic figures in an adventure that’s set beneath Frankenstein Manor.
Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment attraction will be part of Epic’s Dark Universe area. (Universal Orlando)
Tick, tick, tickets
Tickets are now on sale for Epic Universe, but there are limited options so far.
You can buy multiday Universal Orlando tickets, which come with a one-day pass for Epic Universe.
Or if you are a Universal annual passholder, you can buy one-day tickets for Epic. Ticket prices vary by date, and this category is sold out for the first 17 days that Epic is open. The lowest posted price through the rest of 2025 is $122.
More Epic tickets, including one-day tickets, will be sold before the park opens, the Universal website says. That’s also true for Universal Express, the resort’s system for skipping lines. But whether they’ll be available months, day, weeks or even hours before opening isn’t known yet.
Preview mode
When Universal announced the first phase of ticket sales last fall, it mentioned “soft opening opportunities” for passholders. No more information has been shared.
Typically, employee previews would precede those events. There are signs of that happening. Some team members are being trained on the site, a Starbucks is open inside the park, although not to the general public, and industry watchers expect vehicle test rides to start next month.
“It certainly seems like team-member previews are imminent, because they’re doing mock dinner services at some of the restaurants,” Stella said.
Annual pass it on
Florida residents currently can purchase annual passes online that are valid for Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure for $530 with an option to add Volcano Bay for an extra $110. (The resort has an additional $100 discount on this figure for Floridians.)
Universal has not shared details about future annual passes and if they would include access to Epic Universe.
“Is it going to be an add-on, kind of like Volcano Bay?” White said. “Does every single pass skyrocket as soon as they decide to add it?”
Tech talk
Officials and promotional materials have touted Epic as being technologically advanced. Several customer-facing bits of tech, including animatronics, robotic drones, facial recognition and ride systems have been mentioned.
“I think it runs the gamut, but I think it starts with the guest experience of what they’re going to see and how they’re going to be brought into the immersion,” said Dennis Speigel, CEO and founder of International Theme Park Services.
Super Nintendo World will include an interactive feature using a Power-Up Band wearable device to unlock additional content.
“I think technological advancement is going to be very important to the guests,” Speigel said.
Meal motifs
Restaurants will be heavily themed within Epic Universe. Among the eateries will be Mead Hall, a viking-driven establishment in Isle of Berk, and Das Stakehaus, which will be run by servants of vampires, the story goes, in Dark Universe. Toadstool Cafe in Super Nintendo World will lean into its mushroom theme with ingredients and decor.
And, yes, butterbeer will be sold in the Wizarding World, just as it is in the installments at Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios.
Hot new hotels
Three hotels are planned for the Epic area. Stella Nova opened last month, and Terra Luna opens next month. They are close to the theme park, but not as close as the Grand Helios, which will have a dedicated entrance into Epic Universe, not to mention an exclusive view and a rooftop bar.
White, who stayed at Stella Nova recently, timed the bus ride to CityWalk and Universal’s other parks at 14 minutes.
“I basically compared that to going from staying at one of the hotels at the Magic Kingdom and riding over to Animal Kingdom,” he said.
Getting there
A multimillion-dollar extension of Kirkman Road from Carrier Drive down to the Epic site, plus an elevated traffic circle with dedicated bus lanes for the resort, were designed to help with traffic woes around the populated tourist corridor.
But our experts expect roadway snarls.
“I still think Universal Boulevard is going to be like, you know, 20% busier than it has been, and it’s already pretty bad during certain days,” Stella said.
“I feel like that’s one of those things,” White said. “I mean, it just gets added on to Orlando. We just have traffic issues.”
And the rest
Even an Epic Universe overview can be overwhelming. There are additional rides to explore, stage shows to absorb, multiple themed restaurants and their menus to experience. There are unknown details surrounding Express and early access for hotel guests.
And what about fireworks?
“How do you put fireworks in every single promotional ad for this theme park and not announce a firework show?” Stella said. “That’s a question I have, and it’s driving me crazy.”
Epic’s debut is just 100 days away, but there will be 100,000 questions. Time — and Universal — will tell.
One more: Will it be ready?
Speigel said he’s talked with manufacturers and installers, and none have expressed doubt. That’s rare, he said. And there’s the swagger factor.
“I’ve never seen a park open with such fanfare this far in advance of that readiness and showing the pictures and providing the information that they have,” he said.
“I just think that’s a very bold statement on their part, which leads me to believe, from what I see … that they are going to be ready.”
Get ready for an epic adventure because the Universal Epic Universe theme park is just 100 days away from opening its gates!
Featuring thrilling rides, immersive lands, and beloved characters from iconic Universal Studios franchises, this new theme park is sure to be a hit with fans of all ages. From exploring the wizarding world of Harry Potter to battling dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, there’s something for everyone at Universal Epic Universe.
So mark your calendars and start counting down the days until you can experience the magic and excitement of Universal Epic Universe for yourself. With only 100 days left until opening day, the countdown is officially on!

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says U.S. tariffs on Canada will be paused “for at least 30 days” after agreeing on border security measures with U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday afternoon.
The call, the second held between the two leaders Monday, came just hours before 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods were set to take effect Tuesday, along with 10 per cent tariffs on energy exports to the U.S.
He said Canada is implementing the $1.3-billion border security plan first unveiled in December, which includes “reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl.”
Trudeau said nearly 10,000 frontline personnel “are and will be working on protecting the border.”

Canada will also appoint a “fentanyl czar,” list drug cartels as terrorist organizations, “ensure 24/7 eyes on the border,” and launch a new Canada-U.S. joint strike force to combat fentanyl, organized crime and money laundering, the prime minister added.
“I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with $200 million,” he wrote.
“Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together.”
But it also includes several border security measures the federal government has already committed to, and that Canadian officials have spent weeks detailing to Trump administration officials and U.S. lawmakers in Washington.
“I am very pleased with this initial outcome, and the Tariffs announced on Saturday will be paused for a 30 day period to see whether or not a final Economic deal with Canada can be structured,” Trump wrote in a social media post.
Trump pauses Mexico tariffs for one month
The news came after a day when all eyes were on the two leaders as Canada braced for news on the impending tariffs.

Asked in the Oval Office after the deal with Mexico was announced if there was anything Canada can do to get its own reprieve, Trump said “I don’t know,” but then turned to his frequently mentioned push to acquire Canada.

“I’d like to see Canada become our 51st state,” he told reporters.
“We give them protection, military protection. We don’t need them to build our cars. … We don’t need them for lumber, we don’t need them for anything. We don’t need them for energy.”
Trump has linked his coming trade war with Canada to fentanyl crossing the border into the U.S., a position backed up by members of his administration and several Republican lawmakers in Congress.
“This is a drug war, not a trade war,” Trump’s trade advisor Peter Navarro told reporters outside the White House after the deal with Mexico was announced, which Navarro said Canada should match.
Yet on Monday, Trump raised a new grievance about Canada not allowing U.S. banks into the country.
Several smaller U.S. banks operate branches in Canada, but regulations ensure the largest banks, commonly referred to as the “Big Five,” are Canadian-owned to ensure financial independence and regulatory stability.
Canada prepares retaliation as Trump tariffs spark trade war
Trump said he raised the banking issue with Trudeau in their morning call and suggested that was something he wanted to see addressed in any trade deal, and tied it to what he said is the larger issue of countries not treating the U.S. fairly.
Story continues below advertisement
“All we want is a fair deal,” he said, adding he wants “reciprocal” tariffs on trading partners that charge their own duties on American imports.
“Many of the countries that you feel so horrible about, the way they’re being treated by Trump — you’re saying, ‘Oh, President Trump is so terrible to them’ — well they charge us tariffs.
“A lot of these countries, they’re so-called allies, but they don’t treat us well,” he continued.
Ottawa was set to impose 25 per cent tariffs on $30 billion in goods originating in the U.S., hitting hundreds of items, from meat and milk to carpets and curtains.
Canada’s initial tariff response was set to take effect Tuesday, when the American tariffs are being applied, with additional rounds of responses to follow.
Provinces and territories were also set to retaliate, including by cancelling U.S. business contracts and pulling American products from liquor store shelves.
Premiers began announcing those measures were being put on hold after Trudeau’s announcement, but warned they would return if Trump decides to proceed with tariffs.
“Make no mistake, Canada and Ontario continue to stare down the threat of tariffs,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who is currently running for re-election, said in a statement.

“So long as our trading relationship with our largest trading partner is up in the air, we will continue to see many potential projects frozen and projects that were already underway put at risk.”
Trump tariffs: Doug Ford bans contracts with U.S. companies like Starlink
Trump has waved away concerns about tariffs raising prices for American consumers or affecting the stock market, as well as the potential impacts of the Canadian response.
He said the issue of tariffs would go away entirely if Canada becomes a U.S. state.
“I’d love to see that, but some people say that would be a longshot,” he admitted Monday.
“If people wanted to play the game right, it would be 100 per cent certain that they become a state, but a lot of people don’t like to play the game because they don’t have a threshold for pain. And there would be some pain, but not a lot, and it would mostly be theirs.”
Story continues below advertisement
Economists have said Canada could enter a recession in a wide scale trade war, leading to lost jobs and business investment, while the U.S. will see a rise in inflation — something Trump promised to bring down during his presidential campaign.
Recently, there has been a significant development in the ongoing trade dispute between the United States and Canada. President Trump has announced that he will be “pausing” his proposed tariffs on Canadian goods for a period of 30 days, following commitments made by Canada to increase border security measures.
This decision comes as a relief to many businesses and consumers on both sides of the border, who have been concerned about the potential impact of these tariffs on the economy. The tariffs, which were set to go into effect in the coming weeks, would have imposed additional costs on a wide range of Canadian goods, from aluminum and steel to lumber and dairy products.
However, with this temporary pause in place, there is hope that the two countries will be able to come to a mutually beneficial agreement that addresses the underlying issues without resorting to punitive measures. Both sides have expressed a willingness to continue negotiations in good faith, and this development is seen as a positive step towards resolving the trade dispute.
It remains to be seen what will happen after the 30-day period is up, but for now, businesses and consumers can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the immediate threat of tariffs has been averted. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.

In a recent announcement, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed that US President Donald Trump has agreed to pause tariffs on Canada for a period of 30 days. This comes as a welcome relief for both countries, as tensions have been running high over trade disputes in recent months.
Trudeau stated that the temporary halt in tariffs will allow for further negotiations between the two nations to find a resolution to the ongoing trade disagreements. This move is seen as a positive step towards de-escalating the trade war between the US and Canada, and signals a willingness on both sides to work towards a mutually beneficial solution.
While the exact details of the negotiations have not been disclosed, Trudeau expressed optimism that progress can be made during this 30-day period. Both countries are hoping to reach a compromise that will benefit their economies and strengthen their trade relationship.
Overall, Trudeau’s announcement of the temporary pause in tariffs on Canada is a promising development in the ongoing trade tensions between the US and its northern neighbor. It remains to be seen what will come out of the negotiations in the next 30 days, but for now, both sides are hopeful for a positive outcome.

Watch: Mexico’s president announces border agreement with Trump
As part of today’s agreement to “pause” the tariffs on Mexico, the Mexican government had promised to deploy 10,000 National Guard troops to the northern border, in part, to stop the flow of undocumented migrants to the US border.
While different in scale, this is not the first time that Mexico has cracked down on migrants headed to the US.
Last year – during the Biden administration – Mexico deployed some forces to its southern border with Guatemala and in southern Mexican cities that have become hubs for migrants, which led to a significant increase in the number of migrants intercepted before they arrived at the US border.
In January and February last year alone, about 120,000 people were detained. The vast majority remained in Mexico, with only limited deportations of about 8,000 people to Guatemala and Honduras in the same time frame.
In practice, the crackdown – which followed a December meeting between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Mexican officials including López Obrador – has seen Mexican security forces set up new checkpoints on roads, increase patrols and, in some cases, remove migrants from freight trains headed towards the US border.
In a recent development, President Trump has announced a 30-day pause on tariffs imposed on Canada. This decision comes after discussions between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau looks on during a press conference while responding to U.S. President Donald Trump’s orders to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian imports, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada February 1, 2025.
Patrick Doyle | Reuters
President Donald Trump on Monday agreed to pause the implementation of planned tariffs on imports from Canada for at least 30 days, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.
The pause was announced in a tweet by Trudeau hours after Trump and Mexico’s president said Trump would pause for one month planned tariffs on imports from Mexico.
Trump on Saturday said he would impose 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada, and 10% tariffs on goods imported from China. Trump had also planned to impose a 10% tariff on energy resources from Canada.
Trudeau in his tweet said, “I just had a good call with President Trump,” and suggested that the pause on tariffs was in response to Canada’s agreement to target the flow of the deadly opioid fentanyl across the border into the United States.
Trump’s pause on tariffs on Mexican imports likewise came after Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum said she would immediately send 10,000 soldiers to the U.S. border to prevent drug trafficking, fentanyl in particular, from Mexico.
Trudeau said Canada had made new commitments “to appoint a Fentanyl Czar,” among other measures.
“Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together,” Trudeau wrote.
Trump soon after followed up with a post on Truth Social.
“Canada has agreed to ensure we have a secure Northern Border, and to finally end the deadly scourge of drugs like Fentanyl that have been pouring into our Country, killing hundreds of thousands of Americans, while destroying their families and communities all across our Country.”
“I am very pleased with this initial outcome, and the Tariffs announced on Saturday will be paused for a 30 day period to see whether or not a final Economic deal with Canada can be structured,” Trump wrote. “FAIRNESS FOR ALL!”
This is breaking news. Please refresh for updates.
In a recent development, President Trump has announced that he will be pausing tariffs on Canada for at least 30 days. This decision comes after a meeting between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, where they discussed the ongoing trade tensions between the two countries.
Trudeau has welcomed this decision, stating that it is a positive step towards resolving the trade dispute and maintaining a strong economic relationship between Canada and the United States. He emphasized the importance of working together to address trade issues in a fair and mutually beneficial manner.
The temporary pause on tariffs will provide both countries with an opportunity to continue negotiations and find a long-term solution to their trade disagreements. It is hoped that this period of reflection will lead to a more constructive and productive dialogue between the two nations.
Overall, this development represents a positive development in the trade relationship between Canada and the United States, and offers hope for a more stable and prosperous future for both countries. Let’s hope that the next 30 days will bring about meaningful progress towards a resolution of the trade dispute.

Groundhog Day is this Sunday, when we turn to a groundhog for indications that an early spring might be coming. However, Phil’s record isn’t great with accuracy only about 39% of the time.
As the country enters the final weeks of meteorological winter, very few signs of Old Man Winter exist across a large chunk of the nation, with many wondering if sights of the season will return.
According to the latest climate outlook from NOAA, the answer to that question is a bit complicated, as several atmospheric oscillations, which influence everything from moisture patterns to temperature shifts across the country, are expected to be constantly changing in February.
While the general expectation is for the second month of the year to be warmer than average, with near-normal precipitation in most areas, there are important regional caveats to monitor.
The best chances for warmer weather will be in the southern U.S., while the Pacific Northwest and communities along the US-Canadian border are more likely to see additional rounds of below-average readings.
In terms of precipitation, the Pacific Northwest and Midwest are expected to see above-average accumulations, while Texas and the Southeast are likely to experience drier-than-normal conditions.
With widespread temperatures in the 60s, 70s and even 80s in the forecast, February will start with record warmth, prompting questions about whether the cold air of winter will ever make a return.
Historically, February is the second-coldest month of meteorological winter and has been known to produce significant winter storms, but none are on the horizon in the short and medium term.
While new snowfall certainly remains a possibility, there are some clues to help predict where wintry precipitation is most likely to occur.
Temperature outlook for early February.
For instance, snowfall along the Gulf Coast – such as the rare event seen in places like New Orleans and Pensacola in January – will not repeat itself this year.
The event is considered a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence, and the storm track will remain too far north to bring enough Arctic air to the Gulf Coast. However, the region may still experience chilly temperatures, though nothing as extreme as what was seen in late January.
Similarly, the I-95 corridor in the Northeast, which has yet to see a significant snowstorm this winter, is unlikely to experience one in February. Temperature and moisture patterns will likely continue to fluctuate too significantly for any major snow events.
On the other hand, areas in the Rockies and the Pacific Northwest, where colder air is expected and enough moisture will be in place, are more likely to see snowfall from incoming storm systems.
The Midwest could also see precipitation in the form of snow as storm systems clash with enough cold air.
Cities like Minneapolis, Chicago and Detroit, as well as interior parts of the Northeast and New England, may experience plowable snowfall in the coming weeks.
If winter were to end after the first two months of the 2024-25 season, it would largely be considered average when compared to over 100 years of records.
There are some notable exceptions, with Phoenix on track for its warmest winter on record, as well as several cities in California.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, communities in the mid-Atlantic and the Delmarva Peninsula are experiencing one of the coldest winters on record.

February will play a key role in shaping how the season is remembered.
A warm February would reinforce the trend of increasingly mild winters, while a cold month could leave a lasting impression of Arctic blasts and record-breaking cold.
Meteorological spring will officially begin on March 1 and run through the end of May.
According to NOAA’s latest seasonal outlook, most of the nation is expected to experience a warm spring, with above-average precipitation continuing around the Great Lakes.
As we enter the final stretch of winter, there are still plenty of things to look forward to before spring arrives. Here’s what you can expect during the last 28 days of winter:
1. More snowfall: Depending on where you live, snowfall may continue well into March. Be prepared for more snowstorms and icy conditions.
2. Warmer temperatures: Despite the lingering snow, temperatures will gradually start to rise as we approach the end of winter. Days will start to feel longer and sunnier.
3. Early signs of spring: You may start to notice the first signs of spring, such as buds on trees, birds chirping, and flowers beginning to bloom.
4. Winter sports: Take advantage of the remaining days of winter by hitting the slopes for some skiing or snowboarding, or enjoying ice skating or snowshoeing.
5. Spring cleaning: As the days get longer and warmer, it’s a good time to start thinking about spring cleaning and getting your home ready for the new season.
6. Seasonal transitions: With the arrival of spring just around the corner, you may start to see a mix of winter and spring weather patterns, so be prepared for some unpredictable conditions.
Overall, the final 28 days of winter can be a mix of snow, sunshine, and anticipation for the new season ahead. Embrace the last days of winter and make the most of this transitional time.

The ex-footballer was even photographed with the England full-back as he was unveiled to the fans holding up his new number 32 shirt.
But 48 hours after he returned to the UK, a police raid at his home was said to have uncovered more than 90 cannabisplants with a potential street value of £75,000.
They also recovered equipment used to produce the Class B drug.
A source said: “It was a huge shock to everyone after what should have been a triumphant return from Italy.”
They added: “Michael flew out with Kyle in his jet on Thursday. His uncle Mark, who is Kyle’s agent, was also on the flight.
“They got the deal over the line and were jubilant. Michael posed with Kyle for pictures, returned to the UK over the weekend and then on Monday his home was raided by police.”
Rankine, who played as a striker for Doncaster Rovers, Scunthorpe and Bournemouth during a 16-year career, is employed as a football consultant for London firm CAA Base.
On its website, CAA Base said Rankine joined the company in late 2018 after retiring from the game. It adds: “Based in Yorkshire, he helps recruit, manage and guide young professional footballers.”
His ex-pro uncle, Mark, who played for Wolves and Sheffield United, also works for the company.
Kyle Walker lands in Italy to complete AC Milan loan deal
He is part of the management teams for players including Chelsea and England ace Cole Palmer and Newcastle and former Three Lions defender Kieran Trippier.
South Yorkshire police confirmed in a statement that officers executed a warrant at an address in Doncaster.
The raid happened on a busy residential street in full view of neighbouring families.
Police added: “Following officers entering the property, we discovered a cannabis set-up.”
The Sun contacted CAA for comment. Walker’s loan deal is tipped to lead to a full-time £4million summer move.

Kyle Walker, the talented footballer from Manchester City, has found himself in hot water after his football consultant was at the centre of a drugs raid. Just days after Walker signed a deal with AC Milan, police discovered 90 cannabis plants at the consultant’s property.
The timing of this shocking discovery couldn’t be worse for Walker, who was looking forward to starting a new chapter of his career with the Italian club. The news has undoubtedly thrown a wrench in his plans and raised questions about the people he chooses to surround himself with.
It’s a stark reminder that even the most successful athletes can find themselves in troubling situations if they aren’t careful about the company they keep. Hopefully, Walker will distance himself from this scandal and focus on his football career moving forward.
