  • St. Louis U. gets another home challenge as Dayton visits

For the first three months of the St. Louis University basketball season, the team’s results went pretty true to form. They beat the teams they were expected to beat, but against the best opponents, both in conference and nonconference play, they didn’t.

Neutral-site games with Santa Clara and Wichita State. Road games at San Francisco, Grand Canyon and Virginia Commonwealth. SLU went 0 for 5 in those games.

That’s what made SLU’s win over VCU on Tuesday a big deal. After going 0 for 5 against Quad 1 and Quad 2 teams, essentially the top 75 teams in the nation according to the NCAA’s Net ratings, SLU broke out with its win over the Rams.

“It shows what we’re capable of,” said guard Gibson Jimerson, “that we can compete with the physical teams that we play. And I think for us, it’s kind of been a journey. We’ve had a lot of guys out and we kind of have that core group now that’s been playing together for a good amount of games. Defensively, I think we really stepped it up. We saw last game, from the physicality standpoint, but just what we’re doing schematically and in scouting report, I think we’ve been really on point. It was obviously a good win for us, probably our best win so far. But we got a lot to go.”

SLU’s tough week continues on Friday with a game against Dayton that, as of Thursday afternoon, was on the brink of being the team’s first sellout at Chaifetz Arena since Feb. 3, 2023, against VCU. As recently as the start of 2025, Dayton was clearly the best team in the Atlantic 10, but it has run into some trouble and is 4-4 in league play.

“The (VCU) win means something,” said coach Josh Schertz. “That’s obviously the best one of the year so far. We haven’t played Dayton or a bunch of these teams yet, but that’s the best team we’ve played all year. I felt that going into the VCU game and certainly feel that as of today. So it gives us confidence moving forward, that with everything that we’ve been through, that we have enough. That’s what we’ve kind of talked about, is we have enough to win games in this league. You’d love to have your full complement of players and be able to have the depth and the things that you’d like, but this group now should have confidence that there’s no reason we can’t go out and compete and find a way in every game moving forward.”

At 6-2 in Atlantic 10 play, 13-8 overall, SLU is one of only three teams in the conference with a winning record as it hits the halfway point in conference play. SLU has won seven of its past nine games and doesn’t look much like the team it was before.

“This journey has been rewarding,” Schertz said, “because of how much I’ve seen guys improve and how much this team has grown. I would have said in November, in my 17 years, I don’t know that I had coached a softer team, a less physical team, mentally or physically, and then to see them go out and do that against VCU. But just in general, the growth the last month or so, five weeks or so, has been about as good as I’ve seen. The trajectory, I mean, we were, I think, 15th out of 15 (in the A-10) in non-league play in defensive efficiency, now we’re first eight games into the league. That’s a change in mentality, much more than anything else than scheme. It’s a change in mentality. It’s a change in commitment.

“To see a group that has endured what these guys have in terms of games missed and losing what you would consider to be three or four of your main players and your experienced guys and just continue to work, try to get better, not hang their head, not make excuses and say, ‘Well, you know, it’s not our year.’ It’s been super impressive to me, super inspiring to me. And that’s that physicality, that effort, that commitment that they’re making to it to win high level games, those elevated games where you’re playing the best teams. There’s a level of competitiveness needed. There’s a level of physicality needed, and there’s obviously a level of execution of detail needed on both ends of the floor. The physicality growth of this team from Nov. 22 against Wichita State to Jan. 28, that’s about as good as I’ve ever seen. Now, you don’t want to start off as bad as we did with it. You hope there’s a baseline that’s way above what our floor was.”

It’s a weird time in the Atlantic 10 right now. George Mason is 7-1 in league play, SLU and VCU are 6-2, and those are the only three teams — out of 15 — with records above .500. Dayton is one of five teams at .500, and then there are four teams that are one game below .500, either at 4-5 or 3-4.

That underscores the danger of Dayton (14-7, 4-4), which has some of the best nonconference wins in the league but is at .500 in conference play. The A-10 has shown on any night, just about anybody can beat anybody.

And SLU has to make physical play like it had on Tuesday the rule rather than the exception.

“I think this group is starting to look like a basketball team,” Schertz said. “We’re flawed. We’re not perfect. We do a lot of dumb stuff, but we fight and we fought at Richmond, and I’ll say this, we fought at GW. We were down 13 with five minutes to play. We’re down in 16 in the second half and easy to mail it in and say, ‘Ah, we got beat by 25 today. We just didn’t have it.’ … The resilience is there, the competing together, competing present, the attention to detail. You’re starting to see the lights come on, and as a coach that’s exciting.”

St. Louis U. is gearing up for another tough home challenge as they prepare to take on Dayton in a highly anticipated matchup. The Billikens have been on a hot streak lately, winning six of their last seven games and climbing up the Atlantic 10 standings.

However, Dayton is no easy opponent. The Flyers are currently sitting at the top of the conference and have been playing dominant basketball all season long. With a strong offense led by star player Jalen Crutcher, Dayton will be a formidable opponent for St. Louis U.

Fans can expect a thrilling and intense game as these two teams battle it out on the court. The Billikens will need to bring their A-game and play solid defense in order to come out on top against the high-flying Flyers.

  • Airline company corporate headquarters leaving Dayton after 40 years – WHIO TV 7 and WHIO Radio

DAYTON — An airline company announced that it is moving its corporate headquarters from Dayton to Charlotte, North Carolina, according to a release from the company.

[DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks]

PSA Airlines, a subsidiary of American Airlines Group, announced the relocation on Wednesday, Jan. 29.

    TRENDING STORIES:

PSA Airlines corporate headquarters has been located in Dayton since 1985, according to Montgomery County.

The new corporate headquarters will be located at 2708 Water Ridge Parkway, which is about two miles from American’s Charlotte Flight Training Center and five miles from Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT). It’s expected to open in January 2026.

Many PSA employees currently live in this area, according to the company.

The company said all 350 Dayton-based employees are invited to relocate to Charlotte. They have until April to decide, according to the company.

“We chose to relocate PSA’s headquarters to Charlotte for several important reasons, including that Charlotte is where most of our daily departures occur and almost all our training is based,” President and CEO of PSA Dion Flannery said. “Charlotte is a vibrant community and home to the world’s seventh-busiest airport. While we’re looking forward to getting integrated into the Charlotte community, I want to sincerely thank the City of Dayton, its leaders and the entire Dayton community for embracing and supporting PSA for so many years. We will continue to have a presence in Dayton with a maintenance hangar and crew base – including more than 550 Dayton-based team members.”

The transition from Dayton to Charlotte will be gradual, with moves taking place as early as the second half of 2025 and ending in 2026, the company said.

A spokesperson for the Dayton International Airport released a statement on PSA’s relocation.

“This is strictly a business decision that aligns with PSA Airlines management and operational strategies. Despite the relocation, all flights will continue to operate seamlessly in and out of Dayton International Airport. There will be no disruption to our flight schedule and our passengers can expect the same high level of service and reliability when they fly out of Dayton International Airport.

“While we are disappointed about this decision, PSA’s relationship with the City of Dayton, the Dayton International Airport, and the local business community remains strong and positive,” said Gil Turner, the City’s Director of Aviation. He added, “the airport is a major economic driver in the region and PSA Airlines will continue to be a valuable partner.”

PSA Airlines is wholly owned by American Airlines and has been headquartered at the Dayton International Airport for more than 30 years. Over the years PSA Airlines, Dayton International Airport, and the City of Dayton have worked to help PSA grow its operations and maintenance base in Dayton. PSA airlines leases its headquarters building, a training/operations center and maintenance hangar from the airport. Approximately 300 management-level jobs could be impacted by the first quarter of 2026. This will not affect the approximately 500 jobs associated with maintenance and flight crews that are based at Dayton.”

    —  — Dayton International Airport spokesperson

President and CEO of the Dayton Development Coalition Jeff Hoagland also released a statement.

We are disappointed PSA chose to relocate their headquarters to Charlotte. We have worked to keep PSA’s local leadership engaged in the business community, and understand this selection was not a competitive process.

We believe affected employees will be well positioned for job opportunities within the region and state’s aviation and aerospace industry. PSA’s MRO facility will remain here, continuing to employ hundreds of people and their flight service will not be disrupted.

The Dayton Region continues to grow its aerospace manufacturing ecosystem at the Dayton International Airport, and PSA will continue to be part of that.

    —  — President and CEO of the Dayton Development Coalition Jeff Hoagland

In a shocking turn of events, after 40 years of calling Dayton home, the corporate headquarters of a major airline company is set to leave the city. WHIO TV 7 and WHIO Radio have learned that the decision to relocate was made due to a variety of factors, including the desire to be closer to major hubs and a more central location for business operations.

The move comes as a blow to the Dayton community, which has long been proud to be the home of such a prominent airline company. Many are left wondering what this will mean for the local economy and job market, as well as the impact on the city’s reputation as a hub for aviation industry.

Stay tuned to WHIO TV 7 and WHIO Radio for updates on this developing story and reactions from local officials and community members.

  • Bonnies Host Dayton Tuesday Night in Reilly Center

    ST. BONAVENTURE (15-6, 3-5 A-10) vs. DAYTON (14-6, 4-3 A-10)

    Tuesday, Jan. 28 – 8:00 p.m.

    Reilly Center

    TV: YES Network / ESPN+

Radio: Bonnies Online Network / 100.1 FM The Hero

    OPENING TIP

The St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team returns home to the Reilly Center to face off against Dayton on Tuesday night. The Bonnies are seeking to bounce back from a three-game losing skid against a trio of the A-10’s front-runners in VCU, George Mason and Duquesne while welcoming in a Dayton squad that responded from a three-game skid of its own earlier this month with wins in their last three.

    STARTING FIVE

    • St. Bonaventure is looking to snap what is just its second three-game losing skid in Atlantic 10 play since 2020.
    • Bonnies head coach Mark Schmidt enters Tuesday’s game with 399 career victories as a

Division I head coach. He has scored 317 of those wins leading Bona’s program.
    • Senior Chance Moore returned to the Bonnies lineup Friday night at VCU and responded with a game-high 21 points along with eight rebounds. Moore played all but one minute of action after missing the game last Tuesday vs. George Mason due to a toe injury suffered Jan. 18 at Duquesne.
    • Fifth-year captain Noel Brown had his second double-double in the last three games with 10 points and 10 rebounds Friday night. Prior to the game at Duquesne, Brown had never recorded double-digit rebounds in a game.
    • Bona is trying to snap a rare two-game losing skid in A-10 play at home. The Bonnies are 60-19 at home in Atlantic 10 play since 2015-16.

    BROADCAST COVERAGE
Tuesday’s game will be the fifth of five Bonnies men’s games broadcast live on YES Network this season. St. Bonaventure Athletics and YES announced a partnership earlier this fall to air both men’s and women’s games on the network in 2024-25. The YES broadcasts will also be streamed on The Gotham Sports App. YES has ranked as the most-watched regional sports network in the country in 18 of the last 21 years and owns the exclusive regional media rights of the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Nets. Click here to read more about the agreement.

All Bonnies basketball games broadcast on YES will also still stream through ESPN+ as well for fans with a subscription to that service.

Fans can also listen to the audio broadcast as always for free anywhere online through the Bonnies Online Network or locally on terrestrial radio at 100.1 FM The Hero.

    TRENDING NUMBERS

1:13 – Melvin Council Jr. has played all but 1:13 in Bona’s last eight games.

2 – Noel Brown has two double-doubles in the past three games after not recording one in his first 119 career games.

16 – Duane Thompson posted his first career double-figure scoring effort vs. George Mason with 16 points off the bench. That is more than the Bonnies have scored as a team off the bench in all but three games this year.

43 – Melvin Council Jr. has scored double figures 43 of 54 career D-I games.

75-14 – The Bonnies fell to 75-14 when leading at the half since the start of the 2019-20 season with Friday’s loss at VCU.

    ABOUT DAYTON

    • Dayton was picked to finish second in the A-10 preseason poll, receiving six first-place votes to slot behind preseason favorite VCU.
    • Senior forward Nate Santos was named to the A-10’s preseason first team. Santos finished last year as the second leading scorer (11.7) and rebounder (6.3) for Dayton. He was also fourth in the A-10 in three-point shooting. This season, Santos paces the squad at 14.6 ppg while Enoch Cheeks checks in at 13.1 ppg.
    • Dayton has two ranked wins on the season, scoring impressive non-conference triumphs over then-No. 2 UConn and then-No. 6 Marquette.
    • Dayton comes into the game 22th in the nation in assist/turnover ratio (1.57). Malachi Smith is the A-10’s leader in assists at six per game.
    • Dayton is second in the A-10 in field goal percentage at over 47 percent and first in 3-point field goal percentage at better than 36 percent.

    SERIES HISTORY
This marks the 41st meeting all-time between the Bonnies and Flyers with Dayton owning a 29-11advantage.

In the last meeting at the Reilly Center back in February 2023, St. Bonaventure snapped what was a seven-game losing streak vs. Dayton dating to 2016 which had been far and away the longest skid for the Bonnies vs. an A-10 opponent in recent memory.

Last year, the Bonnies lost their fifth in a row at UD Arena against a nationally-ranked Flyers squad. The Bonnies have not won in Dayton against the Flyers since 2016, but in years since, though, the Bonnies have picked up two big wins otherwise in Dayton: St. Bonaventure defeated VCU in the 2021 Atlantic 10 Championship Game at UD Arena and also won at the venue in 2018, knocking off UCLA in the First Four of the NCAA Tournament that year.

The Bonnies are gearing up to host the Dayton Flyers in a highly anticipated matchup this Tuesday night at the Reilly Center. With both teams vying for a crucial conference win, fans can expect an intense and electrifying game.

The Bonnies are coming off a tough loss against VCU and will be looking to bounce back with a strong performance on their home court. Led by standout players like Kyle Lofton and Osun Osunniyi, St. Bonaventure has shown they have the talent and resilience to compete with some of the best teams in the conference.

On the other hand, the Dayton Flyers have been on a hot streak, winning their last three games in a row. Led by standout guard Jalen Crutcher, Dayton will be a tough opponent for the Bonnies to face. With both teams hungry for a win, this matchup is sure to be a thrilling and competitive game.

So mark your calendars and make sure to tune in as the Bonnies take on Dayton this Tuesday night at the Reilly Center. It’s bound to be a game you won’t want to miss!

My Saint Joe’s vs Dayton College Basketball Betting Preview

These are two of the top three teams from the Atlantic 10’s Preseason Poll, but the Hawks and Flyers have had their fair share of ups and downs this season.

The road Hawks beat Villanova and Texas Tech in the non-conference, but they also have losses to Central Connecticut State, Charleston and Princeton.

Meanwhile, the Flyers have wins over UConn, Marquette and UNLV, but they also suffered a recent three-game losing streak that featured a 20-point loss to George Washington and defeats against UMass and George Mason.

So, how am I betting this matchup between two quality Atlantic 10 teams?

Well, I’ll start by saying this: The Flyers can ill-afford any more Quad 3 or Quad 4 losses. This would go down as a Quad 3 defeat, so I don’t expect Dayton to drop this one at home.

The Flyers have also rebounded nicely since that three-game hiccup, beating Loyola Chicago at home and pounding Duquesne by 20 on the road.

But I think six is way too many points against a Saint Joe’s team that has arguably the best backcourt in the Atlantic 10.

Xzayvier Brown, Erik Reynolds II and Derek Simpson is a strong three-headed attack, and that’s without even discussing versatile junior forward Rasheer Fleming, who opens up Saint Joe’s offense.

Dayton has its own powerful backcourt — Enoch Cheeks, Malachi Smith and Javon Bennett — and possesses leading scorer Nate Santos up front. However, Anthony Grant’s team could be without two key contributors, Posh Alexander (foot) and Zed Key (back).

Also, Bart Torvik has this spread closer to Dayton -3, which gives us some nice value on a team I already think is being undervalued because of its season-long inconsistencies.

As the college basketball season heats up, one of the most anticipated matchups this weekend is between Saint Joseph’s and Dayton on January 24th. Both teams have had their fair share of ups and downs this season, making this game a must-watch for fans.

The odds for this game are currently favoring Dayton, with the Flyers listed as -6.5 point favorites. However, Saint Joseph’s has proven to be a tough competitor, especially on the road, so this game could go either way.

When it comes to picks and predictions, it’s important to consider both teams’ recent performances and key players. Dayton’s Jalen Crutcher has been a standout player this season, leading the team in scoring and assists. On the other hand, Saint Joseph’s has been relying on Jordan Hall to lead the team in points and rebounds.

In terms of predictions, it’s likely to be a close game with both teams fighting for the win. However, with Dayton’s home-court advantage and strong performances from Crutcher, they may have the edge in this matchup.

Overall, this game is sure to be an exciting one for college basketball fans. Stay tuned for more updates and analysis as the game approaches.

  • Duquesne Dukes vs. Dayton Flyers live stream info, start time, TV channel: How to watch NCAA Basketball on TV, stream online

    Halftime Report

Dayton is on the road but looking no worse for wear. After one quarter their offense has really been able to impose its will, dominating Duquesne 44-25.

Dayton came into the contest with some extra motivation after the defeat they were dealt the last time these two teams faced off. We’ll see if they’re able to flip the script or if it’ll just be more of the same.

    Who’s Playing

    Dayton Flyers @ Duquesne Dukes

Current Records: Dayton 12-6, Duquesne 9-9

    How To Watch

    What to Know

Duquesne will be in front of their home fans on Tuesday, but a look at the spread shows they might need that home-court advantage. They and the Dayton Flyers will face off in an Atlantic 10 battle at 7:00 p.m. ET at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse. The Dukes will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak.

Last Saturday, Duquesne strolled past St. Bona. with points to spare, taking the game 75-57.

Among those leading the charge was Maximus Edwards, who went 6 for 8 en route to 17 points. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in threes (five). Another player making a difference was Tre Dinkins III, who had ten points along with six assists and two steals.

Duquesne was working as a unit and finished the game with 21 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as St. Bona. only posted nine.

Meanwhile, it may have taken overtime to finish the job, but Dayton ultimately got the result they hoped for on Saturday. They skirted by Loyola Chi. 83-81 on a last-minute layup from Amael L’Etang with but a second left in the third quarter. The victory was some much needed relief for the Flyers as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.

Dayton can attribute much of their success to Enoch Cheeks, who went 6 for 9 from beyond the arc en route to 26 points plus seven rebounds and five steals. Cheeks continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he’s played. The team also got some help courtesy of Malachi Smith, who earned 15 points along with eight assists.

Duquesne’s win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 9-9. As for Dayton, their victory bumped their record up to 12-6.

Duquesne was able to grind out a solid win over Dayton when the teams last played back in March of 2024, winning 65-57. Will Duquesne repeat their success, or does Dayton have a better game plan this time around? We’ll find out soon enough.

    Odds

Dayton is a 3.5-point favorite against Duquesne, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Flyers as a 4.5-point favorite.

    The over/under is 132.5 points.

  • Dayton vs. Duquesne Preview: Key Matchup for Atlantic 10 Rivalry

Duquesne’s men’s basketball team looks to extend its winning streak to four games as they host Dayton on January 21, 2025. After overcoming a tough 0-6 start, the Dukes have won seven of their last eight games, most recently defeating St. Bonaventure 75-57. Key players include Maximus Edwards, who scored 17 points against the Bonnies, and a solid home advantage, having won seven straight at home against Atlantic 10 opponents. This match marks the 90th meeting between the two teams, with Dayton leading the all-time series.

    By the Numbers

    • They have a current home winning streak of seven games against Atlantic 10 opponents.

    What’s Next

Duquesne will head on the road after the matchup with Dayton, facing Fordham on January 26 and Saint Joseph’s on January 29, hoping to build momentum from their current streak.

    Bottom Line

    What to Know

Duquesne will be in front of their home fans on Tuesday, but a look at the spread shows they might need that home-court advantage. They and the Dayton Flyers will face off in an Atlantic 10 battle at 7:00 p.m. ET at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse. The Dukes will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak.

Last Saturday, Duquesne strolled past St. Bona. with points to spare, taking the game 75-57.

    What to Know

We’ve got another exciting Atlantic 10 matchup on schedule as the Dayton Flyers and the Loyola Chi. Ramblers are set to tip at 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday at University of Dayton Arena. The Flyers are strutting in with some offensive muscle as they’ve averaged 75.3 points per game this season.

Loyola Chi. is facing Dayton at the wrong time: Dayton suffered their first home loss of the season on Wednesday and they’re likely out for redemption. They fell 67-59 to the Patriots. The Flyers just can’t catch a break and have now endured three losses in a row.

Despite their defeat, Dayton saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Nate Santos, who earned 20 points, was perhaps the best of all. Malachi Smith was another key player, going 6 for 11 en route to 14 points plus five assists.

Meanwhile, there’s no place like home for Loyola Chi., who bounced back after a tough loss on the road on Saturday. They managed an 81-77 victory over Rhode Island on Wednesday.

Loyola Chi.’s win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Des Watson, who went 8 for 13 en route to 21 points plus two steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Jalen Quinn, who scored 17 points along with five assists and two steals.

Dayton’s loss ended a 22-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 11-6. As for Loyola Chi., their victory bumped their record up to an identical 11-6.

Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as both are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Dayton hasn’t had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 75.3 points per game. However, it’s not like Loyola Chi. struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 75.6. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.

Looking forward, Dayton is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 9.5 points. This contest might not be the best time to bet them against the spread since they’ve let bettors down the last six times they’ve played.

    Odds

Dayton is a big 9.5-point favorite against Loyola Chi., according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers were right in line with the betting community on this one, as the game opened as a 9.5-point spread, and stayed right there.

    The over/under is 142.5 points.
