As hinted at last week with the announcement of Dan Slott and Rafael Albuquerque’s new Superman Unlimited, DC is celebrating the Man of Steel with a whole raft of new comics this year. Now the publisher has revealed the full details for what it’s calling the Summer of Superman – an event timed, of course, to tie in with James Gunn’s upcoming movie.

This new slate will encompass issues of the regular Superman and Action Comics titles as well as a new one-shot, a globe-trotting anthology, and a new graphic novel. We have the full details of each project in order, plus lots of art, below, so let’s break it all down…

Action Comics #1085 will bring the year-long Superman Superstars initiative to an end, with the first instalment of a two-part story by G. Willow Wilson and Gavin Guidry.

“Lois Lane sends the Man of Steel to a scientific outpost in the Arctic to investigate a new technology that promises to halt global warming,” reads DC’s synopsis. “But when Superman arrives, he quickly finds out that the outpost has been plagued by a villain who plans to melt humanity’s hopes for survival.” The issue, out on April 9, will feature a main cover by Brad Walker, plus variants by Davide Paratore, Cully Hamner and Danny Earls.

This 48-page oversized one-shot brings together four of the biggest names in superhero comics for one spectacular special issue.

Mark Waid, Joshua Williamson, and Dan Slott have written “a single story in three acts” that will be fully illustrated by Jorge Jiménez and focus on the wedding of Lana Lang to John Henry Irons – AKA Steel. “However, their big day will also be big trouble, as threats from the past, present and future will spawn major new conflicts for the Superman family,” reads DC’s press release.

The Summer of Superman Special #1 is published on April 16 and will come with a slew of different covers to choose from, including a main and variant cover by Jiménez, and additional variant covers from Alexander Lozano, John Giang, Mahmud Asrar, Dan Jurgens, and Chrissie Zullo Uminga.

Anyone who has been following Superman’s monthly adventures will know that his arch-enemy Lex Luthor has been going through a rough patch recently, having lost all of his memories. The time is almost right for Luthor to make his full return, however, and “fight for control of Supercorp and Metropolis” in a 48-page special issue.

Superman #25 is written by Joshua Williamson and illustrated by Dan Mora, Eddy Barrows, and Eber Ferreira. DC says that the issue “celebrates the last two years of Superman, connects to Summer of Superman Special #1, and sets up a brand-new storyline featuring Superman’s greatest enemy.”

Dan Mora provides a gorgeous wraparound main cover for the issues, and there will be a huge range of variants available, including Guillem March, Jeff Dekal, Rafael Grassetti, Dave Johnson, Laura Braga, Fico Ossio, and Dan Hipp. It hits stands on April 23.

    Superman: The World

    Image 1 of 1

    Superman: The World

    Superman: The World

The third instalment of DC’s The World anthology series – hardcover collections featuring all new stories by comics creators from across the planet – focuses on the Man of Steel.

“Renowned Superman storytellers Dan Jurgens and Lee Weeks join a team of 15 international creators to tell tales that highlight what makes Superman the greatest superhero of all,” reads the blurb. It follows hot on the heels of previous The World books themed around Batman and the Joker, and will be in stores on June 24, arriving on the same day and date in Brazil, Mexico, Germany, Spain, Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Turkey, India, Cameroon, Poland, the Czech and Slovak Republics, and Argentina.

    Superman’s Good Guy Gang

As previously revealed, DC is launching a new line of early readers graphic novels aimed at kids aged 5–7. The first of these is Superman’s Good Guy Gang, written and drawn by Death and Sparkles creator Rob Justus. The book introduces readers to Clark Kent – here aged eight – and his pint-sized pals Hawkgirl and Green Lantern Guy Gardner, “as they test their abilities, grow together and maybe even earn some good guy points along the way.” It’s out on July 1, with further books in the series planned to focus on Batman, Wonder Woman, and Mister Terrific.

    Superman Day reprints

DC is also reprinting a raft of titles in new editions to celebrate Superman Day, which the company has been insisting is April 18 (rather than June 12) for some time now.

    • All-Star Superman Deluxe Superman Day Edition hardcover, with a new dust jacket featuring art by Frank Quitely

    • Superman Unchained Deluxe Superman Day Edition hardcover, with a new dust jacket featuring art by Jim Lee

    • All Star Superman #1 Special Edition

    • Superman For All Seasons Book One Special Edition

    • Action Comics #1 Golden Age–Size Facsimile Edition featuring an homage cover by superstar artist Dan Mora

    • Plus an excerpt of the upcoming young adult graphic novel Jimmy Olsen’s Supercyclopedia

These are the best Superman stories of all time.

  • Giant pandas to debut at DC’s National Zoo Friday

Two giant pandas are set to make their highly anticipated debut to the public at the Smithsonian National Zoo in D.C. on Friday morning.

Two giant pandas are set to make their highly anticipated debut to the public at the Smithsonian National Zoo in D.C. on Friday morning.

The pandas, Bao Li and Qing Bao, have been quarantined since they arrived in the U.S. from China in mid-October, giving the animals time to adjust to their newly renovated habitat.

Tickets to the National Zoo are free. For those who can’t say hello in person, the Giant Panda Cam is expected to relaunch Friday.

From now through Feb. 9, the zoo is celebrating the pandas’ return with events, including a screening of “Kung Fu Panda” in the Visitor Center Theater.

    DC’s panda drought is over

The zoo’s previous beloved bears, Tian Tian, Mei Xiang and Xiao Qi Ji, were returned to China in November 2023.

The new bears didn’t arrive until 11 months later, causing some fear in the interim that the partnership between the two countries to exchange the animals in the name of conservation was a thing of the past.

While the wait may have felt unbearable to some, panda-lovers rejoiced at the bears’ return to D.C. in October, cheering them on as their police-escorted motorcade drove into the National Zoo on Oct. 15, 2024.

Over the last several months, the zoo has been helping Bao Li and Qing Bao get used to the smells and sounds of crowds. Part of that has involved some zoo members visiting the panda enclosure, which was renovated in their absence.

They’ve been playing in the snow and enjoying lots of bamboo, zookeepers said.

Spot the difference? How to tell the new pandas apart

The black-and-white bears can look pretty similar at first glance, but the Smithsonian Magazine has some tips for telling the new pandas apart.

Off the bat, Bao Li, a 3-year-old boy, is bigger than Qing Bao.

But here are some other key markers the magazine pointed out:

    • Qing Bao has two round, dark-colored birthmarks on her left backside
    • Qing Bao has fluffier cheeks than Bao Li
    • Bao Li’s eye patches are wider and have pointy tips that flare out more than Qing Bao
    • The black band across Bao Li’s back is thicker and down his middle; Qing Bao’s is thinner and higher

Of course, their personalities are a bit different, too. According to the Smithsonian, Bao Li is “playful” and “attention-seeking,” but Qing Bao is more reserved and independent.

Bao Li has roots in D.C. He’s the son of Bao Bao, who was born at the D.C. zoo in 2013.

    A lesson in panda history

The National Zoo became the first zoo in the U.S. to take part in what’s become known as “panda diplomacy” when a pair of pandas from China arrived at the zoo in 1972.

In the decades since, the Chinese government has lent pandas to zoos worldwide.

But, in recent years, China opted to not renew some of those agreements. Pandas from D.C. and San Diego were among those to fly back to China, with no plans for new bears to return in their place.

Ultimately, China agreed to send back new pandas to California, D.C. and Spain — squashing fears about threats to panda diplomacy.

  • DC’s snowfall chances rise for Sunday evening

DC’s snowfall chances rise for Sunday evening

Conditions are shaping up for the D.C. area’s first notable snowfall of 2025 on Sunday night.

Conditions are shaping up for the D.C. area’s first notable snowfall of 2025 on Sunday night, with a chance the region could see several inches going into Monday morning.

“We have a good opportunity to see at least 3 inches of snow, if not more,” 7News First Alert Meteorologist Eileen Whelan said.

There will be mostly sunny skies and light winds Sunday, with temperatures hovering around 32 degrees. Clouds will arrive later in the evening, teeing up for snow chances.

“The cold air will be in place and the moisture will be there as well,” Whelan said, adding additional snow days could be possible.

The region could see a preview Friday afternoon as an arctic front moves through, bringing a rain and snow mix. Temperatures will reach the mid 40s.

Friday’s front “could bring us a quick coating of snow on maybe some of the grassy surfaces, but temperatures will be well above freezing,” Whelan said.

While heaps of snow aren’t expected Friday, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser is deploying the District Snow Team at noon Friday and crews in the city will begin treating roads with brine Thursday evening. D.C. is also encouraging residents and business owners to salt their sidewalks ahead of possible snowy weather.

The front will then bring freezing temperatures Saturday, with morning wind chills in the teens. Highs will reach the low 30s.

Here’s a look ahead at the weekend forecast.

    FORECAST

    THURSDAY EVENING: Partly cloudy
    Temps: 30-38
    Winds: West 5 mph
    Wind Chills: 27-34
Easing winds with increasing clouds as we get ready for the next weather-maker Friday.

    OVERNIGHT: Partly cloudy
    Lows: 26-32
    Winds: West 5-10 mph
    Partly Cloudy and dry overnight.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy, chance of afternoon rain, snow from mainly 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
    Highs: 39-45
    Winds: West 8-12 mph
Ahead of another push of cold air, highs for the day will reach the middle 40s. Latest guidance brings a chance for a wintry mix during the afternoon hours. Areas of rain, sleet, and snow will traverse across the DMV between 1-6 p.m. Temperatures will be above freezing when the moisture moves in, so plan for rain at the start in D.C. As colder air spills in, we could see a brief transition to sleet and snow. A coating of snow is possible on grassy areas, especially north and west of the district. Any lingering moisture could refreeze with temperatures rapidly falling below 32.

    SATURDAY: Mostly sunny
    Highs: 30-35
Winds: West 10-15, gusts to 30 mph
Arctic air settles in for the first weekend of 2025. Morning wind chills in the teens will give way to wind chills in the 20s during the afternoon.

SUNDAY: Mostly to partly sunny, cold
    Highs: Around 32
    Winds: Northwest 5-10 mph
Cold weather remains locked in place for the day under mostly sunny skies. Later in day, clouds will increase ahead of our next weather make which is likely to bring snow to region.

SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY: WINTER ALERT
The first snow of the season is looking more likely starting late Sunday night and continuing into Monday. It’s still too early to pinpoint accumulations, an inch or more of snow is likely at this point across parts of the mid-Atlantic, however, forecast trends continue to evolve.

In today’s digital age, the importance of cybersecurity for industrial control systems cannot be overstated. With the rise of interconnected devices and the Internet of Things (IoT), the potential for cyber attacks on critical infrastructure has never been higher. This is especially true for systems such as Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Distributed Control Systems (DCS), which are commonly used to monitor and control industrial processes.

As a cybersecurity expert specializing in industrial control systems, I have seen firsthand the devastating effects that a cyber attack can have on these systems. From disrupting production processes to causing equipment failures, the consequences of a successful cyber attack can be severe. That’s why it is crucial for organizations to take proactive measures to protect their SCADA and DCS systems from potential threats.

One of the key challenges in securing industrial control systems is the fact that many of these systems were designed with functionality in mind, rather than security. This means that they may not have the built-in security features that are standard in modern IT systems. As a result, it is important for organizations to implement additional security measures to protect their SCADA and DCS systems.

Some of the best practices for securing industrial control systems include:

    1. Implementing network segmentation to isolate critical systems from less secure networks.
    2. Regularly updating and patching software to address known vulnerabilities.
    3. Deploying intrusion detection and prevention systems to monitor for suspicious activity.
    4. Training employees on cybersecurity best practices to prevent social engineering attacks.
    5. Conducting regular security audits and assessments to identify and address potential weaknesses.

By taking these proactive measures, organizations can significantly reduce the risk of a cyber attack on their industrial control systems. As a cybersecurity expert, I am committed to helping organizations protect their critical infrastructure from potential threats. If you have any questions or concerns about cybersecurity for industrial control systems, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Together, we can ensure the security and reliability of your SCADA and DCS systems.

Industrial control systems (ICS) are critical components of many industries, including manufacturing, energy, and transportation. These systems, which include Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Distributed Control Systems (DCS), and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), are responsible for monitoring and controlling industrial processes.

With the increasing connectivity of these systems, the risk of cyber threats has also grown. Cyber attacks on ICS can have devastating consequences, including disruption of operations, damage to equipment, and even threats to public safety.

To protect these critical systems, cybersecurity measures must be implemented. This includes implementing strong access controls, regularly updating software and firmware, and conducting regular security assessments. Additionally, network segmentation and monitoring are essential to detect and respond to potential threats.

Training employees on cybersecurity best practices is also crucial, as human error is often a significant factor in successful cyber attacks.

As the reliance on industrial control systems continues to grow, it is essential that organizations prioritize cybersecurity to protect their operations and assets. By implementing robust cybersecurity measures, businesses can mitigate the risks of cyber attacks and ensure the continued safe and efficient operation of their industrial control systems.
