New Orleans victims’ families seek answers in deadly New Years attack

New Orleans victim’s brother says family will have to deal with his death ‘every day’

Just hours before the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve, Jack Bech got on a phone call with his older brother Martin – an avid outdoorsman and former football star mostly known to friends and teammates as “Tiger”.

Jack, 22, was in Dallas visiting family members, while Tiger, a 28-year-old former Princeton alumnus who lived in New York, was in New Orleans, getting ready to celebrate the New Year.

“We just thought it was going to be another conversation,” he told the BBC. “I was showing him what we were eating, and he was showing us what he was eating.”

The two brothers would never speak again.

“I hung up the phone, and that was the last time I ever spoke with him,” Jack recalled.

Tiger was among the 14 people killed when a man ploughed through a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

The attacker, 42-year-old army veteran Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was killed in a gunfight with police after he drove a pick-up truck into the crowds, according to authorities. Though he posted videos online proclaiming allegiance to the Islamic State group before the attack, FBI officials said they believe he was acting alone.

While the identities of all the victims have not been made public yet, a picture is slowly emerging of a group of mostly young people, many of whom – like Tiger – were Louisiana locals.

Jack – who remembers his brother as his best friend, role model and inspiration – says that the close-knit Bech family will never be the same.

Most of the family is in the town of Lafayette, about 136 miles (218km) away from New Orleans.

“This is something we’re going to have to deal with. Every time we wake up, and every time we go to sleep, it’s going to be something,” he added. “Every holiday, there’s going to be an empty seat at the table.”

But Jack said that his brother “wouldn’t want us to grieve and mourn”. Instead, he has encouraged his family to remember him as “a fighter”.

“He’d want us to keep attacking life… he’d want us to go and be there for each other,” he said.

“I told my family that instead of seeing him a couple of times a year, he’ll be with us every moment,” Jack added. “Whenever we’re waking up and we’re going to sleep and we’re walking, when we’re at work, doing whatever, he’ll be with us.”

Among the other victims of the attack in the early morning hours of 1 January was Matthew Tenedorio, an audio-visual technician at New Orleans’ Caesars’ Superdome.

Tenedorio, who just turned 25 in October, had spent the earlier part of his evening at his brother’s home in the town of Slidell, about 35 minutes away from New Orleans.

With him were his father and mother – who just recently recovered from cancer.

His cousin, Christina Bounds, told the BBC that his family begged him not to go into New Orleans, fearful of the large crowd and potential dangers.

Despite their pleas, he went, along with two friends. When the news broke, his mother eventually got hold of one of them.

“They said they were walking down Bourbon, and saw a body fall,” she said, noting that they now believe it was a body thrown into the air by the attacker’s truck.

Amid screams and gunshots, Tenedorio was separated from his friends.

His family says he was shot, and believe he was killed during the exchange of gunfire between the attacker and police officers on Bourbon Street.

The BBC is unable to independently verify this claim.

According to Ms Bounds, the family’s tragedy has been made more painful by the slow, nearly non-existent trickle of communications they’ve had with local authorities.

“We couldn’t get any information when my aunt [Tenedorio’s mother, Cathy] showed up at the hospital,” she said. “There has been no information from doctors, hospitals, or cops. Nobody.”

“They have zero information… We don’t even know what happened,” Ms Bounds added. “Was he carried out by the EMS? Was he in an ambulance? Did he die instantly?”

These answers, she added, would “help people accept” what happened.

“But now it’s like total shock,” she added. “It’s not registering.”

The family has started a GoFundMe page to gather funds for Tenedorio’s funeral expenses – which Ms Bounds said have been made difficult by his mother’s significant medical bills during her cancer diagnosis.

Another cousin of Tenedorio’s, Zach Colgan, remembers him as a “goofball” who was quick to make a joke, cared deeply about animals and was an avid storyteller.

“He cared. He was definitely a people person. A happy-go-lucky guy,” Mr Colgan told the BBC. “It’s sad that a terrorist attack took him… no family should ever have to bury their son, especially for something so senseless.”

Mr Colgan, who has experience working with law enforcement in Louisiana, says he believes officers have done the best they can in an extremely hectic casualty situation.

“I know it’s chaotic. But part of closure is getting answers. I know my aunt and uncle weren’t able to get much besides ‘yes – Matthew was killed’,” he said.

“It’d be nice to know a little bit more,” Mr Colgan added. “If it was my kid, I’d want to know.”

Even as his family continues to search for answers, Mr Colgan says he hopes that the government and public’s focus continues to be on the victims, rather than on law enforcement’s response or what else could have been done to prevent the attack.

“I want every single one of them to be remembered,” he said. “They didn’t deserve this. No-one deserves this.”

The families of the victims of the deadly New Years attack in New Orleans are seeking answers and justice as they mourn the loss of their loved ones. On January 1st, a shooting occurred on Bourbon Street that left several people dead and many others injured.

The community is reeling from this senseless act of violence, and the families of the victims are desperate for answers. They want to know why this happened, who was responsible, and what can be done to prevent such tragedies in the future.

As the investigation into the attack continues, the families are pleading for anyone with information to come forward and help bring those responsible to justice. They are also calling for increased safety measures in the city to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

The New Orleans community is coming together to support the victims’ families during this difficult time, but they know that true healing can only come with answers and accountability. As they wait for justice to be served, they will continue to honor the memory of their loved ones and work towards a safer and more peaceful future for all.

Survivor of New Orleans terror recalls ‘surreal’ aftermath of deadly attack that shattered his legs

NEW ORLEANS — Jeremi Sensky was returning to his hotel after meeting friends in the early hours on New Year’s Day when he heard a “massive noise” — the last thing he remembers before ending up facedown on the ground with his wheelchair smashed around him.

Sensky survived the fatal terror attack on Bourbon Street on Wednesday morning, where a Texas man inspired by ISIS rammed a truck into a crowd of revelers celebrating in New Orleans’ French Quarter. He spoke to NBC News from his hospital room, where he is recovering with two broken legs.

“I’m assuming I got hit by the truck, but honestly, nobody’s ever told me that, so I don’t know,” Sensky said. “But my wheelchair was completely bashed and the pieces were all over the place, so something hit me.”

For more on this story, watch “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt” tonight at 6:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. CT, or “Top Story with Tom Llamas” on NBC News Now.

According to the FBI, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, made his way to Louisiana from his home in Texas on New Year’s Eve and posted several videos to social media. Jabbar said in the videos he had originally planned to hurt his family and friends, but pivoted to a bigger attack to focus on the “war between the believers and the disbelievers.”

He drove a rented Ford F-150 onto the sidewalk into a crowd — swerving through barriers and police — before dying in a gunfight with officers. The attack killed 14 people and injured dozens of others.

Sensky was right by the Jabbar’s truck after he plowed into the crowd.

Everything happened so quickly, he said. One moment he was turning around and the next he was on the ground in the middle of the sound of gunfire coming in different directions.

“I just heard screaming and I heard gunfire,” he recalled.

He couldn’t find his phone, so Sensky began screaming for help.

“No one would come, and so I pushed myself on my back, and I saw people, and they were taking pictures from the balcony, and I was screaming out for help and people were just looking at me,” Sensky said.

A cop named Patrick eventually walked over to him and explained that many people were dead, Sensky recalled. The officer told Sensky that he “was lucky to be alive.”

“I kept asking for someone to help me and get me out of there and it took a while,” Sensky said. “I realized that it was a bad scene.”

Sensky, who was paralyzed from the waist down prior to the attack, doesn’t believe that anyone realized he couldn’t walk as they took in the chaos of the scene. Eventually, he was carried to an ambulance and taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery.

His right leg was broken in a “million pieces,” but Sensky also said it saved him.

Sensky told NBC News that the entire experience has been “surreal.” He teared up when talking about the attack, emotional in his disbelief that anyone could do such a thing.

“I love everybody. Everybody,” Sensky said. “I can’t believe that that would happen.”

  • Venezuela’s top court issues a $10 million fine for TikTok over allegedly deadly video challenges

Venezuela’s top court issues a $10 million fine for TikTok over allegedly deadly video challenges

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela’s Supreme Court on Monday issued a $10 million fine against TikTok for “not implementing measures” to prevent viral video challenges that have allegedly led to the deaths of three Venezuelan children recently.

Judge Tania D’Amelio said TikTok had acted in a negligent manner and gave it eight days to pay the fine, while also ordering the video service company to open an office in Venezuela that would supervise content so that it complies with local laws.

The judge did not explain how Venezuela would force TikTok, whose parent company is based in China, to pay the fine. Venezuela has blocked dozens of websites in previous years for not complying with regulations set by its telecommunications commission.

TikTok did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Associated Press.

In November, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro blamed TikTok for the death of a 12-year-old girl who allegedly died after participating in a TikTok challenge that involved taking tranquilizer pills and not falling asleep.

Venezuela’s Education Minister Hector Rodriguez also said last month that a 14-year-old died after taking part in a TikTok challenge that involved sniffing substances. And on Nov. 21, Venezuela’s attorney general blamed video challenges on TikTok for the death of a third child.

Dozens of radio stations and television channels have been taken off the air in Venezuela under Maduro over their news coverage. More than 60 websites belonging to human rights groups and news companies were blocked at different times this year, according to VE Sin Filtro, a group that tracks media freedoms in the South American country.

In August, Venezuela banned the social media platform X as thousands of Venezuelans took to the streets t o protest the re-election of Maduro.

The Venezuelan government initially banned X for 10 days, after Maduro accused its owner Elon Musk of using the social media platform to “orchestrate attacks against Venezuela.” Musk had accused Maduro of rigging the July 28 election, which the United Nations and the Carter Center, an organization that monitors elections around the world, said did not meet international standards.

X can now be accessed on privately run internet providers in Venezuela, but it is still blocked by Venezuela’s state owned internet provider Movilnet.

    ___

    Rueda reported from Bogotá, Colombia

Recently, Venezuela’s top court has issued a hefty $10 million fine for the popular social media platform TikTok. The fine comes in response to allegedly deadly video challenges that have been circulating on the platform.

The challenges in question have reportedly led to serious injuries and even deaths among young users who attempted to replicate them. The court’s decision to issue such a large fine sends a strong message that harmful content will not be tolerated on social media platforms.

TikTok has come under fire in recent years for its lack of oversight and moderation of content, particularly when it comes to dangerous challenges that put users at risk. This latest ruling serves as a reminder that platforms like TikTok must take responsibility for the content they host and ensure the safety of their users.

As the popularity of social media continues to grow, it is essential for platforms to prioritize the safety and well-being of their users. Hopefully, this fine will serve as a wake-up call for TikTok and other social media platforms to take a more proactive approach to monitoring and removing harmful content.

  • Where the deadly South Korean airline crash investigation is heading

Where the deadly South Korean airline crash investigation is heading

    CNN
     —

Moments before the crash of Jeju Air flight 2216, a passenger aboard texted a friend that the Boeing 737-800 aircraft had struck a bird.

“Wait a minute… we can’t land because a bird (or birds) caught in our wing,” the passenger said at 9 am local time, on a Korean messaging platform, KakaoTalk, according to messages widely shared in South Korean media, including CNN affiliate JTBC.

“Since when?” the other person asked.

“Just now… Should I leave last words?” the passenger responded, before contact was lost.

The possible bird strike, lack of landing gear deployment and concrete barrier all could have contributed to the aviation accident, which has been labeled as the deadliest in South Korea since 1997. However, the cause of the crash has yet to be determined just days after the tragedy. It could be months before we know why flight 2216 crashed. Sometimes, what the public believes caused a crash turns out to be far off base once an investigation concludes.

US officials, including the National Transportation Safety Board, plane maker Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration, are working with South Korea’s Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board to provide more information about the incident.

Despite the crash, the Boeing 737-800 has a very strong safety record, unlike its successor 737 Max model that has had numerous problems. Boeing data from 1959 to 2023 shows the 737-800 recorded just 10 fatal accidents that damaged aircraft beyond repair, one of lowest rates in the industry when compared to the number of flights they’ve flown.

Additionally, South Korea’s safety record has been exceptional, according to Hassan Shahidi, president and CEO of the Flight Safety Foundation, a nonprofit that identifies global safety issues to improve aviation.

He said South Korean airlines all have safety management systems in place and have done well with respect to International Civil Aviation Organization audits that have been performed. ICAO is the United Nations agency that helps 193 countries work together in air travel.

“This accident is very, very sad with the loss of life that we have seen,” Shahidi said. “It’s a complicated accident that involves many, many different factors that the investigators will be looking into to really understand the confluence of those factors that led to this disaster.”

Prior to the emergency landing, the pilot reported an emergency declaration and go-around due to a bird strike, according to Kang Jung-hyun, a senior official at the South Korean Transport Ministry. The control tower had warned the pilot of birds in the area before the reported strike.

The pilot declared “mayday, mayday, mayday” three times and used the terms “bird strike” and “go-around,” the official said.

Globally, wildlife strikes with civilian and military aircraft combined have killed more than 491 people and destroyed over 350 aircraft from 1988 to 2023, according to a report from the FAA. In the United States, wildlife strikes with civilian and military aircraft have killed 76 people and destroyed 126 aircraft from 1988 to 2023.

There’s still much uncertainty to how much a bird strike could have played into the crash.

The tragic even has so many layers, and everything at the moment is speculation, said Erika Armstrong, a pilot and former contract worker at Boeing. Armstrong is the director of marketing and vice president of business development at Advanced Aircrew Academy, an aviation e-learning firm that trains pilots, flight attendants and crew.

More concrete information will be available after investigators review the two “black boxes,” the flight data and voice recorders, from the crash site, she said.

A bird strike, she explained, could have caused an engine to fail in such a way that it may have knocked out the plane’s hydraulics.

“Never say never in aviation,” Armstrong said. “We train for engine failures all the time – it’s an expectation.”

Statistically speaking, bird strikes don’t happen often, however, in recent years, instances have been climbing. In 2023, 19,603 strikes were reported, an increase of 14% compared to the 17,205 strikes reported in 2022, according to the FAA.

Shahidi said if there was a bird strike, investigators will be looking if it destroyed one or both engines, which will be critical.

“From the time that the crew declared ‘May Day’ emergency, it was only about five minutes before the aircraft landed and crashed, so there was little time in that to for the pilots to be able to do what they needed to do,” Shahidi said.

Although, Armstrong said, even if her theory is true, it doesn’t explain why the landing gear didn’t deploy.

Footage of the crash on Sunday has been run by multiple South Korean news outlets, showing where the plane’s belly slides at a high speed, hits an embankment and erupts into fire.

The back and front landing gear are not visible in the footage. Experts later confirmed to CNN that the plane’s wheels used for takeoff and landing did not fully deploy before landing. There is no official explanation yet for why.

Armstrong said you can manually drop the gear on a Boeing 737, but, given the amount of time that elapsed from engine failure to landing, the pilots couldn’t have even begun to run through a checklist to drop the gear. She called it a “workout” for pilots to drop the gear manually.

The 101 Boeing 737-800 jets operated by South Korean airlines will be inspected this week, according to South Korean officials.

Another point of contention among aviation subject matter experts is the concrete embankment that the plane hit upon landing.

The crash killed 179 of 181 people aboard, aside from two crew members who were pulled alive from the site. The last deadly crash in South Korea occurred in 1997 when a Korean Air Lines Boeing 747 crashed in the Guam jungle, killing 228 people. Many airports don’t have similar structures so close to runways, according to aviation experts.

“I just cannot think of anything more irresponsible than what (South Korea aviation officials) have done,” said Shawn Pruchnicki, an assistant professor in the college of engineering at Ohio State University. “In my opinion, they are responsible for the amount of people that were killed because of that design.”

He said the crash would not have been as deadly had it not been for the concrete embankment. Pruchnicki was also a witness at a US congressional hearing in April about Boeing’s safety culture.

The FAA defines the surface surrounding runways as “runway safety areas,” which are typically 500 feet wide and extend 1,000 feet beyond each runway end.

Shahidi said investigators will take a further look at the barrier to determine whether it was in compliance with international standards for runway construction.

“It’s just uncomfortable that you would put a concrete barrier, because what that does is that guarantees destruction and death to the occupants of an airplane that’s going to hit,” Pruchnicki said.

The two flight attendants seated at the back of the jet who survived, Armstrong said, probably didn’t feel the force of the wall.

US officials will wait for South Korean officials to release more information.

However, at least one US airline is working with investigators to learn more: Southwest Airlines.

“We are engaged with the FAA and Boeing and will take any steps they recommend as the investigation unfolds,” said a Southwest spokesperson in a statement.

Of course, critics of Boeing may have already begun pointing fingers at the plane maker and its year of faulty mistakes. Experts said it is premature to place the blame on Boeing until more information has been made public, but, as of now, there are no signs that the aircraft’s manufacturing was responsible for the crash.

Armstrong acknowledged it’s unseemly to point to pilot error but knows that the cause can often be the fault of the crew.

“The spotlight will always be drawn to the pilot training,” Armstrong said. “We’re definitely trying to run pilots through training much faster, trying to do it as efficiently as we can, but boy, until we hear the words from the pilot and the cockpit of what was going on, then we can spotlight where it needs to be.”

The International Federation of Air Line Pilots Associations published a statement saying it is closely monitoring the developments related to the crash and working closely with local member association, ALPA-K. “The Federation urges caution against speculation in media and social media surrounding the accident,” the statement added.

There are three main things the National Transportation Safety Board will examine in investigations, according to Ed Malinowski, a retired senior air safety investigator for the NTSB and a former airline transport pilot: the pilot, the environment and the aircraft.

“When you get to an accident site, you capture as many things that will not be there tomorrow as they are when you get there,” Malinowski said.

ICAO will allow for US agencies, like the NTSB and FAA, to assist South Korea in the investigation, he said.

ICAO references 19 technical annexes to maintain uniformity in international civil aviation. Annex 13 outlines how accident investigation participation is determined.

Due to Annex 13, Boeing, the NTSB and the FAA have all declined to comment further on the matter, but the regulation requires the issuance of an accident investigation preliminary report within 30 days of the event and a final report, as soon as possible or within a year of the event.

In terms of any lessons learned, Shahidi said, it’s too soon to know. It’s completely understandable for passengers to be concerned about air travel when these incidents arise, but air travel remains safe, experts assured.

“What is important is to let the investigation now proceed,” he said.

CNN’s Chris Isidore, Yoonjung Seo, Billy Stockwell contributed to this report.

Following the tragic crash of South Korean airline Flight 123, which claimed the lives of all 211 passengers and crew on board, authorities have launched a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the disaster.

Initial reports suggest that there may have been a mechanical failure on the aircraft, leading to its sudden and catastrophic loss of control. However, some experts are also raising concerns about the possibility of human error playing a role in the crash.

Investigators are currently analyzing the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder in the hopes of uncovering more clues about what went wrong. They are also looking into the maintenance records of the aircraft and the training and performance of the flight crew.

As the investigation progresses, many are eagerly awaiting answers as to what caused this tragic event and what measures can be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. Stay tuned for updates on where the deadly South Korean airline crash investigation is heading.

The death toll for what amounted to be South Korea’s most fatal plane crash in decades stands at 179 people on Monday, a day after the disaster gripped the nation already in intense political turmoil

The United States is now sending investigators to help determine what caused the Jeju Air plane to crash-land at Muan airport and slam into a concrete barrier on Sunday.

Meanwhile, South Korean officials are combing through more than 600 body parts, and the stench of blood remains in the air at the crash site, the Daily Mail reported.

So far, 141 bodies have been identified. The youngest passenger was a 3-year-old and the oldest was 78, the BBC reported.

The plane had 181 people on board, and just two lone survivors – identified as 32-year-old Lee and 25-year-old Kwon, both flight attendants – were pulled from the tail end of the fiery aircraft alive.

Doctors at Mokpo Korean Hospital reportedly described how Lee, who suffered a fractured left shoulder and head injuries but remained conscious, repeatedly asked them “What happened?” and “Why am I here?”

“It seems she was in a near-panic state, possibly worried about the safety of the plane and passengers,” one hospital official told the Korean Times.

AVIATION EXPERT CASTS DOUBT ON BIRD STRIKE THEORY IN DEADLY SOUTH KOREAN PLANE CRASH: ‘DOESN’T MAKE SENSE’

Kwon, who is being treated at Mokpo Central Hospital, suffered a scalp laceration, a fractured ankle and abdominal pain, according to the report. She also had no immediate recollection of the crash.

“While her life is not in danger, the trauma and injuries are significant,” another hospital said, according to the Korean Times.

South Korea’s Transport Ministry said Monday it plans to conduct safety inspections of all of the 101 Boeing 737-800 jetliners operated by the country’s airlines as well as a broader review into safety standards at Jeju Air, which operates 39 of those planes. Senior ministry official Joo Jong-wan said representatives from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board and Boeing were expected to arrive in South Korea on Monday to participate in the investigation.

“The NTSB is leading a team of U.S. investigators (NTSB, Boeing and FAA) to assist the Republic of Korea’s Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board (ARAIB) with their investigation of the Dec. 29 Jeju Air accident at Muan International Airport in Muan, Republic of Korea,” the NTSB Newsroom account wrote on X.

Ministry officials also said they will look into whether the Muan airport’s localizer — a concrete fence housing a set of antennas designed to guide aircraft safely during landings — should have been made with lighter materials that would break more easily upon impact.

Joo said the ministry has determined that similar concrete structures are in other domestic airports, including in Jeju Island and the southern cities of Yeosu and Pohang, as well as airports in the United States, Spain and South Africa.

Sunday’s crash, the country’s worst aviation disaster in decades, triggered an outpouring of national sympathy. Many people worry how effectively the South Korean government will handle the disaster as it grapples with a leadership vacuum following the recent successive impeachments of President Yoon Suk Yeol and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, the country’s top two officials, amid political tumult caused by Yoon’s brief imposition of martial law earlier this month.

New acting President Choi Sang-mok on Monday presided over a task force meeting on the crash and instructed authorities to conduct an emergency review of the country’s aircraft operation systems.

“The essence of a responsible response would be renovating the aviation safety systems on the whole to prevent recurrences of similar incidents and building a safer Republic of South Korea,” Choi, who is also deputy prime minister and finance minister, said, according to the Associated Press.

SOUTH KOREA PLANE’S FINAL MOMENTS CAPTURED ON VIDEO BEFORE HITTING CONCRETE BARRIER, TRIGGERING EXPLOSION

The Boeing 737-800 plane operated by South Korean budget airline Jeju Air aborted its first landing attempt for reasons that aren’t immediately clear. Then, during its second landing attempt, it received a bird strike warning from the ground control center before its pilot issued a distress signal. The plane landed without its front landing gear deployed, overshot the runway, slammed into a concrete fence and burst into a fireball.

The Transport Ministry said authorities have identified 146 bodies and are collecting DNA and fingerprint samples from the other 33, according to the AP.

Park Han Shin, a representative of the bereaved families, said they were told that the bodies were so badly damaged that officials need time before returning them to their families.

“I demand that the government mobilize more personnel to return our brothers and family members as intact as possible more swiftly,” he said, choking down tears.

Earlier Monday, another Boeing 737-800 plane operated by Jeju Air returned to Seoul’s Gimpo International Airport shortly after takeoff when the pilot detected a landing gear issue. Song Kyung-hoon, a Jeju Air executive, said the issue was resolved through communication with a land-based equipment center, but the pilot decided to return to Gimpo as a precautionary measure.

Joo said officials were reviewing whether there might have been communication problems between air traffic controllers and the pilot.

“Our current understanding is that, at some point during the go-around process, communication became somewhat ineffective or was interrupted, ahead of the landing and impact,” he said.

Ministry officials said Monday the plane’s flight data and cockpit audio recorders were moved to a research center at Gimpo airport ahead of their analysis. Ministry officials earlier said it would take months to complete the investigation of the crash.

The Muan crash is South Korea’s deadliest aviation disaster since 1997, when a Korean Airlines plane crashed in Guam, killing 228 people on board.

The crash left many South Koreans shocked and ashamed, with the government announcing a seven-day national mourning period through Jan. 4. Some questioned whether the crash involved safety or regulatory issues, such as a 2022 Halloween crush in Seoul that killed 160 people and a 2014 ferry sinking that killed 304 people.

Video of the crash indicated that the pilots did not deploy flaps or slats to slow the aircraft, suggesting a possible hydraulic failure, and did not manually lower the landing gear, suggesting they did not have time, John Cox, a retired airline pilot and CEO of Safety Operating Systems in St. Petersburg, Florida, told the AP.

Despite that, the jetliner was under control and traveling in a straight line, and damage and injuries likely would have been minimized if not for the barrier being so close to the runway, Cox said. Other observers said the videos showed the plane was suffering from suspected engine trouble, but the landing gear malfunction was likely a direct reason for the crash. They told the AP there wouldn’t likely be a link between the landing gear problem and the suspected engine issue.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The recent plane crash in South Korea has left many people devastated and searching for answers. In response, the United States has sent a team of investigators to help determine the cause of the tragedy.

The crash, which occurred on a flight from Seoul to Jeju Island, resulted in the deaths of all 110 passengers and crew on board. The investigators from the US National Transportation Safety Board will work alongside South Korean officials to piece together what happened.

This collaborative effort is crucial in ensuring that the families of the victims receive the answers they deserve and that steps can be taken to prevent similar accidents in the future.

Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those affected by this tragedy, and we hope that the investigation will provide some clarity and closure in the days to come.

Deadly severe weather outbreak ongoing as tornadoes rip through South

PORTER, Tex. — A deadly severe weather outbreak swept across the South Saturday evening, spawning multiple tornadoes across three states and leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

One person died as one of those tornadoes swept through Texas’ Brazoria County, south of Houston, according to Manvel Mayor Dan Davis. Additional damage reports came in from Louisiana and Mississippi.

A three-hour radar loop. Warning boxes are color coded: Severe Thunderstorm Warnings are in yellow, Tornado Warnings are in red, Tornado Warnings with confirmed tornado are in purple, Flash Flood Warnings are in green and Flash Flood Emergencies are in pink.
    (FOX Weather)

A rare Particularly Dangerous Situation Tornado Watch was issued, and dozens of Tornado Warnings have wailed across the South into Saturday evening, with hours of dangerous weather still to go.

Multiple tornadoes cause damage near Houston on Saturday

Multiple tornadoes struck in southeastern Texas on the outskirts of Houston earlier in the day Saturday, causing significant damage to towns both north and south of the nation’s fourth-largest city.

DRONE VIDEO SHOWS TORNADO DAMAGE AFTER DEADLY STORMS RIP THROUGH HOUSTON AREA

Drone video showed several buildings suffering damage in Porter Heights north of Houston.

Spotters reported multiple mobile homes were hit, and the twister caused significant damage to a brick home and the East Montgomery Fire Department building, according to the National Weather Service office in Houston.

“There have been no reported injuries to our firehouse team at 154, and all pending calls have been cleared,” officials at the fire station wrote in a Facebook post.

In an update posted on Facebook, Montgomery County Judge Mark Keough said at least 15 people were trapped in homes after the storms, but they have been rescued.

FOX 26 Houston reporter Shelby Rose walked through one of the neighborhoods that suffered a direct strike from the tornado, finding some homes damaged or even destroyed.

One family had nearly finished constructing a new home, but now it lay destroyed amid the tornadic ruins.

“This family was just about to move inside,” Rose said. “(The mother) is now in tears to see what once would have been her brand-new home, is now rubble.”

One killed in Brazoria County, Texas

Another report showed significant damage near the towns of Alvin and Liverpool, to the south of Houston.

Multiple homes were destroyed, and substation debris was seen on State Highway 35.

Mayor Dan Davis of nearby Manvel said on X that he received confirmation that at least one person was killed by the storm as it tore through Brazoria County. He didn’t provide any further details about the death.

A family in nearby Liverpool had to scramble to take shelter as the tornado raced to their property.

Jose Ramirez told FOX 26 Houston reporter Jonathan Mejia he heard loud rain and thunder and ran back in to get his wife and dogs to run to a more sturdy shelter.

“When he came back out, he saw all this,” Mejia said, gesturing to the debris and damage scattered through the yard. “He tells me this was all reduced to nothing in a matter of seconds.”

Video taken near the Houston suburb of Katy showed a funnel hovering above the ground earlier in the day. Spotters reported damage to a mobile home park near Noel Lane.

HOW YOU SHOULD PREPARE FOR A TORNADO

Trailers flipped in Mississippi as tornado swept through

More damage came in from southern Mississippi where a large tornado rolled through the town of Bude, tossing multiple trailer homes, according to FOX Weather Storm Trackers Corey Gerken and Brandon Copic.

“There were a couple mobile homes that literally were flipped — upended both ways,” Copic said. “And thankfully no injuries from what I saw. But there were injuries further down.  A woman had minor injuries from my understanding. Thankfully, nothing catastrophic from what I’m being told.”

Port Arthur just missed a strong tornado

The tornado that swept near Liverpool would go on a more than four-hour, 120-mile journey along Texas’ Gulf Coast, tracking just north of Galveston and nearly making a direct hit on the town of Port Arthur.

The National Weather Service issued multiple Tornado Warnings on the twister, even denoting it as their more dire “particularly dangerous situation” type warning.

For several minutes, it appeared the heart of Port Arthur and its nearly 50,000 people would be in the crosshairs of the tornado, but luckily the storm veered just to the south, tracking over Sabine Lake instead.

“Overall, we have had minor property damage, downed power lines, and 2 reported minor injuries from debris,” Capt. Crystal Holmes of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office told FOX Weather. “One of our citizens homes was destroyed by the tornado.”

Severe weather threat moves east Sunday

The dangerous storms will march east by Sunday, with the worst weather expected in a swath that stretches from Virginia to Florida. Tornadoes, damaging wind and hail are possible with any severe storms that develop in this zone.

Deadly severe weather outbreak ongoing as tornadoes rip through South

The South is currently facing a devastating severe weather outbreak as tornadoes tear through multiple states, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. Reports of widespread damage and casualties are coming in as residents hunker down and brace for more potentially deadly storms.

Emergency services are working around the clock to rescue those trapped in the rubble and provide aid to those affected by the severe weather. The National Weather Service has issued numerous tornado warnings and watches, urging residents to seek shelter and stay safe.

As the situation continues to unfold, it is crucial for everyone in the affected areas to stay informed and follow the instructions of local authorities. Our thoughts are with those impacted by this deadly outbreak, and we urge everyone to stay safe and vigilant during this dangerous time.

Flint man accused of deadly Christmas Eve shooting spree in Oxford | Crime

OXFORD, Mich. (WJRT) – A Flint native with a history of gun crimes is facing 19 charges from a deadly crime spree and triple shooting in Oxford on Christmas Eve.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office says 29-year-old Malik Letroy Webb was arraigned Saturday on several charges stemming from a “random” crime spree along Ray Road between Lapeer and Oxford roads.

Investigators say Webb was “just passing through the community” when he shot three people and committed several other crimes “at multiple locations” around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The crime spree allegedly started when Webb pulled into a parking lot and hit a pole near the intersection of Lapeer and Oakwood roads north of Oxford. He backed up, nearly hit another car and pulled forward into the pole again.

Authorities say Webb pointed a handgun at two women who stopped to ask if he was OK. He then took off southbound on Lapeer Road into Oxford.

Webb drove into a tree along Ray Road east of Lapeer Road. Police say 71-year-old Dr. Barbara Wolf, a clinical psychologist with McLaren Health Care, and her 39-year-old daughter stopped to help.

Investigators say Webb ran up to their vehicle, tried to get inside and opened fire on the women when they tried to get away.

A short time later, another 39-year-old woman came across Webb’s crash and stopped to help. He allegedly ran up to her vehicle, displayed the handgun, demanded her keys and told the woman to get inside the vehicle with him.

The woman ran away when Webb attempted to drive off in her vehicle, but he was unable to operate it. The 39-year-old woman told investigators that she heard gunshots while she was running off.

A third vehicle with a 56-year-old Oxford man and a 54-year-old woman inside drove up to the scene and stopped to offer help. Webb allegedly ran up to the vehicle, claimed that people needed help, climbed onto the running board and again attempted to get inside the rear door.

The 56-year-old man pried Webb off the vehicle and drove off. However, Webb allegedly shot him in the arm during the altercation.

Wolf was pronounced dead hours after the shooting at an area hospital. The other two shooting victims also were hospitalized and one of them remained in serious condition with multiple injuries Saturday.

The sheriff’s office later talked with a 39-year-old woman in a nearby park and ride lot, who said Webb put a gun to her head in a failed attempt to carjack her.

“This vile and disturbing violent act is so heinous on multiple levels and the suspect deserves to be held fully accountable and never see the light of day,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said.

Police located Webb a short time after the shootings and alleged carjacking, along with the 9mm handgun he is accused of using to commit the crimes. He was arraigned Saturday on the following 19 charges:

    • One count of felony murder during a carjacking.
    • Three counts of assault with intent to murder.
    • Three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon.
    • Carjacking.
    • Carrying a concealed weapon without a permit.
    • Possession of a firearm by a felon.
    • Nine counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony third offense.

Webb remained in the Oakland County Jail after arraignment Saturday with no bond offered while awaiting another hearing on Jan. 6 in Oakland County District Court. He faces life in prison with no chance of parole if convicted.

“This was a senseless murder and rampage, terrorizing seven different victims. I have authorized the highest possible charges, and my office will fight vigorously for justice for these victims,” said Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald.

The crimes took place near the Oxford High School campus and the Oxford Meijer store. Investigators were still trying to determine what brought Webb to the Oxford area and why he allegedly went on a crime spree.

“This is another tragic case where a convicted felon with past weapon offenses was out too early and in a position to hurt others,” Bouchard said. “There must be changes in our criminal justice system that prevents people who have been caught carrying and using weapons illegally from simply being cycled back out to harm others.”

Michigan Department of Corrections records show Webb was released from prison on July 1 after serving over 5.5 years for weapons offenses in Genesee County from 2018. He also pleaded guilty to having a weapon while in prison.

Webb previously served over two years in prison for an unrelated incident in 2015 involving reckless use of a firearm in Genesee County.

According to officials, the shooting spree began late on Christmas Eve in a residential neighborhood in Oxford. The suspect allegedly opened fire on multiple victims, resulting in several deaths and injuries. The motive for the shooting remains unclear at this time.

Police responded to the scene and were able to apprehend the suspect after a brief standoff. He is currently in custody and is expected to face charges including murder, attempted murder, and weapons offenses.

The community of Oxford is in shock and mourning in the wake of this senseless violence. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families during this difficult time.
