The Los Angeles Dodgers have reportedly signed infielder Hyeseong Kim to a three-year deal with $12.5 million guaranteed, according to The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya. The contract has a two-year option for the 2028 and 2029 seasons that could allow the deal to be worth as much as $22 million.

MLB teams were able to negotiate a contract with Kim after he was posted on Dec. 5. Teams had until 5 p.m. ET on Friday to work out a deal.

The 25-year-old Kim, who has played the past six seasons with the KBO’s Kiwoom Heroes, was the first player from South Korea and Japan to be posted this offseason and has been training in Los Angeles for the past month.

Kim, a left-handed hitter, is coming off a career season with the Heroes in which he hit 11 home runs, drove in 75 runs, stole 30 bases and posted a .326 batting average. It was his fourth straight season hitting over .300 and his seventh straight season with at least 20 stolen bases.

Over his eight-season career, Kim has slashed .304/.364/.403 with 386 RBI in 953 games. His 211 steals since 2018 are the most by any KBO player during that span.

Defensively, he’s a three-time KBO Fielding Award winner. He won the award in 2021 at shortstop and in 2022 and 2023 at second base.

After the Dodgers played an exhibition in March against a team of Korean All-Stars, manager Dave Roberts said that Kim impressed the team’s scouts.

“Our scouts like the second baseman: just the way his body moves. There’s some life to the bat and defensively (he) made a nice play out there,” Roberts said. “There’s good baseball players all over the world and so this is just another chance for us to see them and for them to match themselves against us.”

With the signing of Kim and re-signing of Teoscar Hernández, that puts the Dodgers right at the 40-man roster limit, meaning someone will need to be moved out. And with Mookie Betts set at shortstop and Gavin Lux at second base, Kim will fill a utility role.

Kim is the fifth player from the Heroes to sign with an MLB team following Kang Jung-ho (Pittsburgh Pirates), Park Byung-ho (Minnesota Twins), Ha-seong Kim (San Diego Padres) and Jung-hoo Lee (San Francisco Giants).

Had Kim not signed with an MLB team, he would have returned to the Heroes and would be unable to be posted again until after Nov. 1, 2025.

The New York Yankees have signed infielder Andrew Velazquez to a Minor League free-agent deal with an invite to Spring Training according to Jack Curry of YES Network. A New York native, he played for the Yankees in 2021, hitting his first career home run and winning over the fanbase as someone raised in the Bronx as a diehard fan of the team. While the Yankees will likely not have him at the top of their infield depth chart, the 30-year-old veteran provides more depth at the upper levels of the Minor Leagues, which is important after dealing Caleb Durbin to the Brewers.

Last season, Andrew Velazquez played with the Atlanta Braves at the Triple-A level, hitting 16 home runs in 118 games with a 78 wRC+.

The Yankees are reuniting with Andrew Velazquez, who served as a sparkplug during their 13-game winning streak in 2021 that helped them just barely make the postseason. The switch-hitting shortstop hasn’t had much success with his bat at the big-league level, but is known more for his glove and speed, which can be valuable in a bench role especially if the team is able to find a capable everyday starter at either 3B or 2B.

It’s not a deal that gives Velazquez a spot on the team’s 40-man roster however, so he’ll have to try and really impress the team in Spring Training to potentially be considered for a bench role. After dealing away Caleb Durbin, the infield depth chart in Triple-A grew much thinner, as Oswald Peraza is out of MiLB options and cannot be stashed away in Triple-A in case of injury without placing him on waivers.

After a flurry of moves in December, January has been much more quiet for the Yankees, with most of their needs covered in the lineup and pitching staff. The team needs to add a 2B or 3B if they want to have a complete roster, preferably one with a high OBP as the team lacks a reliable option at the top of their lineup. A left-handed reliever could also be on their radar, as the Yankees don’t have a left-handed bullpen option on their 40-man roster at the moment.

They’ve been linked to Tim Hill and Andrew Chafin, who are both entering their age-35 seasons and would give Aaron Boone an option who can neutralize lefties and hold their own against righties. A trade of Marcus Stroman is also likely near the top of their priority list as the right-hander is set to make $18.3 million in 2025 and currently doesn’t have a spot in the rotation.

Dodgers sign Korean infielder Hye-seong Kim to three-year deal, per reports

Korean infielder Hye-seong Kim has signed a deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers, reports The Athletic. Multiple outlets from South Korea have the deal in the area of three years and $22 million. Word of the contract comes just hours before the deadline for for Kim to sign with an MLB team or return to South Korea’s KBO. He was posted by the Kiwoom Heroes last month.

Kim turns 26 later this month. In 127 games last season, he hit .326/.383/.458 with 26 doubles, four triples, 11 homers, 75 RBI, 90 runs and 30 stolen bases in 36 tries. In his KBO career, he’s hit .304/.364/.403. The power has been a concern, but he’s set new career highs in slugging percentage each of the last three seasons and the 11 homers last year were four more than his previous best. 

MLB front offices got a few looks at Kim the last several years, as he was teammates with Jung Hoo Lee and Ha-Seong Kim in the past.   

A full-time shortstop in 2021 who also spent time at third base, Kim has otherwise spent the overwhelming majority of his time on defense at second base. Even if the bat doesn’t play, the expectation is Kim will be a quality defender and baserunner. CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson broke down Kim’s game when he was posted in early December.

It remains to be seen if the Dodgers view Kim as a starter. They’ll start finding out in spring training. There could be a fit for a starter here, as there are moving parts. It looks right now as if Gavin Lux would start at second, Mookie Betts at shortstop and Max Muncy at third base. Teoscar Hernández and Michael Conforto are the corner outfielders with Tommy Edman in center. Betts could be shifted to the outfield, though, which would open a spot for Kim to start. Muncy can play second or first. Edman can play shortstop in a bind, which would shuffle the entire outfield. The bench includes Miguel Rojas, who can play multiple infield spots, utility man Chris Taylor and outfielder Andy Pages. 

Looking at all of this, the Kim signing should be viewed as the Dodgers stockpiling depth. The World Series champs went through a bunch of injury adversity last season, so they know all too well how important organizational depth can be. As an added bonus, they prevent any other team from signing Kim.

The first week of 2025’s worst-kept secret is already out and it’s a big one.

On Wednesday, Cobra Puma Golf announced the signing of Max Homa to a multi-year endorsement contract to play Cobra golf clubs and wear Puma golf shoes.

The deal comes as somewhat of a shock before this week as Homa had been with Titleist and Footjoy since turning professional in 2013 and played their gear during his standout college career at the University of California. As of Wednesday morning, Homa was still listed as a golf ball endorser on Titleist’s website.

But, after somewhat of a down year in 2024 where he failed to win on the PGA Tour for the first time since 2020 and fell to 41st in the Official World Golf Ranking, Homa attended a clinic earlier this week in Hawaii sans any brand logos on his hat and bag.

Now Homa is officially the face of a Tour staff that includes Rickie Fowler, Lexi Thompson and Gary Woodland, among other PGA Tour winners.

“I am super excited to join the Cobra Puma Golf team. Gear that’s on the cutting edge of technology and the most comfortable shoes in the game are a great combination for any player,” Homa said in a release announcing the deal. “The Cobra Puma Golf brands are undoubtedly a natural fit for my game, style, and personality and I’m looking forward to a long-term relationship that will be fun and exciting for years to come.”

Homa was also photographed on Tuesday playing practice rounds at Kapalua ahead of the start of the 2025 PGA Tour season at the Sentry using the recently released Cobra DS-ADAPT LS Driver and working with Cobra Tour rep Ben Schomin. Homa looks like he’ll game the driver this week with a Fujikura Ventus Blue 7-X shaft with the FutureFit33 hosel in setting C4.

“Throughout the testing process with the Cobra Tour and R&D team, I was incredibly impressed with the performance of the clubs, and I think they will truly give me a competitive advantage,” Homa said. “I love the look, sound and feel of the new DS-ADAPT driver, and the new FutureFit33 hosel is a gamer changer in terms of fine-tuning performance.”

The deal allows Homa some freedom to pick and choose a few non-Cobra clubs — photos from Kapalua suggest he will still game a Scotty Cameron mallet — but he will start the season with a rather interesting combo set of Cobra irons.

Homa will use a Cobra Limit3D 4-iron and a King CB 5-iron along with a custom 6-PW set of prototype 3D-printed irons. Details on the prototypes are sparse now, but 3D printing is now allowing Cobra to make one-off sets of irons like never before.

“What the Cobra team was able to do with my personal set of 3D-printed irons absolutely blew my mind,” Homa said.

Homa will also debut the new Puma Ignite Elevate 2 Tour golf shoe, which is set to be announced next week.
