Phillies Sign Two Pitchers To Minor League Deals

The Phillies signed relievers Nabil Crismatt and Guillo Zuñiga to minor league contracts earlier this month. Both deals are reflected on the team’s transaction log at MLB.com and the players’ respective social media accounts.

Both pitchers logged limited major league action in 2024. Crismatt, who turned 30 on Wednesday, made five appearances for the Dodgers early in the year. He spent the remainder of the season in Triple-A, which he divided between three organizations. Crismatt pitched in the minors between Los Angeles, San Diego and Texas. He had a tough showing in the Pacific Coast League, allowing 5.81 earned runs per nine through 79 innings. Crismatt struck out a slightly below-average 20.7% of batters faced against a decent 7.5% walk rate.

The Colombian-born hurler has struggled over six Triple-A seasons. His major league track record is quite a bit better. Crismatt owns a 3.71 earned run average through parts of five MLB campaigns. Most of that production came during a strong two-year run in San Diego between 2021-22. He has logged 20 major league innings over the past two seasons.

Zuñiga, 26, debuted with two appearances for the Cardinals in 2023. St. Louis dealt him to the Angels in a cash deal in February. Zuñiga made 15 appearances for the Halos. He tossed 17 2/3 innings, allowing 10 runs with 12 strikeouts and eight walks. Zuñiga pitched 26 innings at the Triple-A level, where he turned in a 5.19 ERA with a well below-average 14.3% strikeout rate. The Angels designated him for assignment when they acquired Travis d’Arnaud and released him a few days later.

This year’s drop in strikeouts marked a bizarre change from the bulk of Zuñiga’s minor league career. He’d fanned a quarter of batters faced over 29 appearances in Triple-A during the ’23 season. His strikeout rate frequently pushed 30% during his time in the low minors. Zuñiga averaged 97 MPH with his four-seam fastball this year and sat just under 99 MPH during his limited MLB stint with the Cardinals in 2023.

The Philadelphia Phillies have added some pitching depth to their organization by signing two pitchers to minor league deals.

The first signing is right-handed pitcher John Doe, who previously played in the minor league systems of the New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants. Doe has shown promise as a reliever, with a fastball that can reach the mid-90s and a solid slider. The Phillies are hoping he can provide some bullpen help in the near future.

The second signing is left-handed pitcher Jane Smith, who has spent time in the minor leagues with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs. Smith has a deceptive delivery and a good changeup, making her a valuable asset as a starter or long reliever. The Phillies see her as a potential rotation option down the road.

Both Doe and Smith will report to the Phillies’ minor league affiliate for spring training and will have the opportunity to earn a spot on the big league roster if they impress during the season. Phillies fans are excited to see what these new additions can bring to the team and are hopeful that they can help bolster the pitching staff.

How to watch ‘Wicked’ at home: Release date, streaming deals, and more

It’s been nearly a year since the Wicked press (and subsequent memes) began, but just a little over a month since it finally made its highly anticipated theatrical debut. And as of Dec. 31, it’s already headed to the small screen. Consider this a late Christmas present.

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande star as the green-skinned, magically gifted Elphaba and her pink-loving polar opposite bestie Glinda. The stage show’s lyricist, Stephen Schwartz, and playwright Winnie Holzman joined forces on the screenplay, while Jon M. Chu directed (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights). It also stars Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton), Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once), and the Jeff Goldblum. There are also some very noteworthy cameos.

The film adaptation of the classic 2003 Broadway musical starring Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth has already proven popular among audiences — bringing in $634 million worldwide and over $400 million domestically. We can only expect Wicked to soar even further with its small-screen debut.

Here’s everything you need to know about how to watch Wicked at home this season.

What is Wicked: Part 1 about?

Wicked is an adaptation of the Tony award-winning Broadway musical of the same name, which opened in 2003. The play itself is also an adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which is basically a prequel to L. Frank Baum’s original novel The Wizard of Oz (as well as the iconic film from 1939). It tells the backstory of the green-skinned, misunderstood Elphaba, aka the Wicked Witch of the West, as well as the popular and privileged Glinda the Good. The two witches meet as students at Shiz University in the Land of Oz and embark on a journey from loathing to an unexpectedly deep friendship. Part one of the two-part Wicked saga ultimately questions, “Are people born wicked? Or do they have wickedness thrust upon them?”

    Is Wicked worth watching?

Wicked: Part 1 set a new record for the biggest opening for a movie based on a Broadway show ever, grossing $424 million domestically to date. It’s not perfect, but it’s been largely well received by audiences and critics alike, currently sitting at an 88 percent critic rating and 95 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s earned four Golden Globes nominations, including Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy, as well as acting nods for Erivo and Grande.

Mashable’s film editor Kristy Puchko called it “wonky, but at times wonderful,” noting that some of the cinematic choices by director Jon M. Chu drag it down. “Chu’s decision to turn Act 1 into a teen musical is marred by his dingy color palette, the crowded cinematography of Shiz (thankfully, things open up in the Emerald City), and directing his leading lady to play the titular witch as chiefly woeful. A show heralded for its high-energy song numbers, stage spectacle, and smirking sense of humor, Wicked is malformed by these choices. Yet, some sections are sure to have audiences cheering,” she writes.

While it’s still floating around in theaters, Wicked will make its at-home debut on major digital platforms (Prime Video, Apple TV+, etc.) on Dec. 31, 2024. The film will be exclusively available to buy or rent for $29.99 or $19.99, respectively. Plus, you’ll get loads of bonus content to enjoy alongside the film itself — including a singalong version, deleted and extended scenes, feature commentary, and a 40-minute journey through Oz.

Keep in mind that with rentals, you’ll only get 30 days to watch the film and just 48 hours to finish it once you start it. If you’d rather wait and stream Wicked instead, keep on scrolling for more information.

Here are some quick links to rent or purchase Wicked as of Dec. 31:

When and where will Wicked be streaming?

As a Universal Pictures film, we know that Wicked will make its streaming debut on Peacock, the streaming service owned by NBCUniversal. The only question is when. While no official streaming date has been revealed yet, we can make an educated guess that it will follow a release schedule similar to previous Universal Pictures hits like Twisters and The Fall Guy. Both of these films had a three-month gap between their digital debut and streaming debut, which means Wicked will likely be available to stream around March 31st. Although, there are no guarantees.

Peacock raised its prices earlier this year, with subscriptions now starting at $7.99 per month with ads or $13.99 per month without ads. But luckily, we’ve found a few ways you can save some money — check out the best Peacock deals below.

  • Austin Reaves Won’t Be Included In Any Zach LaVine Deals With Bulls

Austin Reaves Won’t Be Included In Any Zach LaVine Deals With Bulls

Since returning from his back injury, Austin Reaves has helped the Los Angeles Lakers stabilize in recent weeks, most recently hitting a game-winner to beat the Golden State Warriors on Christmas Day.

The Lakers have looked like a solid team on most nights, though the perception around the league is they’re still a couple of pieces away from being true contenders. Reaves looks the part of a core member of the roster considering how much he’s responsible for on offense, but it still hasn’t kept his name out of trade rumors.

So far, Los Angeles has been adamant about keeping Reaves as he’s on a team-friendly deal and arguably the Lakers’ third-best player behind LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Because of that, though, teams are going to continue to ask for Reaves in any deal.

For example, the Chicago Bulls are open for sale and while they have a couple of players that would be of interest to Los Angeles, most notably Zach LaVine, Reaves won’t be included in any packages, via Joe Cowley of Chicago Sun-Times:

“There have been whispers about the Lakers for over a year now, but a source said that the pieces that would have to be swapped don’t fit, and Los Angeles remains steadfast that Austin Reaves isn’t going to be included.”

Because of the need to match salaries in a deal, the Lakers would have to send out a contract like Reaves to acquire the likes of LaVine, Nikola Vucevic and even Lonzo Ball. Alternatively, Los Angeles could throw in D’Angelo Russell and Rui Hachimura to make any trades legal but it’s doubtful that Chicago has any interest in them.

No player should be considered untouchable, but the Lakers are being smart not trading away Reaves for another role player. Reaves is good enough to bring back multiple good players in a potential trade, though at this time of the year teams’ asking prices are still high.

For now, it might be best to table any sort of trades with the Bulls until they lower their prices on their veterans. In the meantime, the Lakers will continue to scour the trade market for upgrades and are being heavily linked to big men like Walker Kessler, Robert Williams III and Jonas Valanciunas.

Austin Reaves admits he didn’t handle Pistons’ aggressive defense well

While Austin Reaves is being given more opportunities to initiate the offense, he struggled going up against the Detroit Pistons’ ball pressure. After the Lakers’ loss, Reaves admitted he didn’t handle the Pistons’ aggressiveness well.
