Linda Lavin‘s cause of death has been determined.

According to a death certificate obtained by TMZ and reviewed by PEOPLE, the Alice star died after suffering cardiopulmonary arrest with lung cancer as an underlying cause.

Per the Cleveland Clinc, cardiopulmonary arrest stops blood from pumping into the heart, which keeps oxygen from being delivered to vital organs. This typically causes people to collapse and become unresponsive.

Just a few days before her death, Lavin also underwent a bronchoscopy on Dec. 26, 2024. A bronchoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure where a physician will examine a patient’s airways to treat or diagnose a lung condition, per the Cleveland Clinic.

On Sunday, Dec. 29, PEOPLE confirmed Lavin’s death with her representative saying in a statement that she “passed unexpectedly due to complications from recently discovered lung cancer.”

Three weeks before her death, Lavin opened up to PEOPLE about her “flowing” career and whether or not she was pursing more work in Hollywood during the premiere of Netflix’s No Good Deed.

“That’s pretty much where the career is flowing right now,” said the television star, who played the neighbor character Phyllis in No Good Deed. “And I did a play a couple of years ago in New York, almost two years ago, so that recently, off-Broadway, and it was a limited run, which I enjoy.”

The Tony Award winner added, “It doesn’t matter about the medium for me. If it had been a play, I would’ve said yes, but I still would’ve liked a limited run.”

     —

An American Airlines employee working at Charlotte Douglas International Airport was struck and killed by a ramp vehicle while on the tarmac Monday, authorities said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to a call at 9:38 a.m. for an employee struck by a vehicle on the tarmac and the person was pronounced dead on the scene, police said in a statement.

The incident involved a single airline ramp vehicle, the Charlotte Douglas International Airport said, but no additional details on the incident were given.

The airport said it is “working closely with airline and first responder partners in the ongoing investigation and is providing support as needed.”

In a statement, American Airlines said they “are devastated by the accident” and are “focused on ensuring that all involved have the support they need during this difficult time.”

While news about accidents relating to airplanes has become more commonplace in recent years, death of workers in airport operations is relatively uncommon. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics recorded five deaths in 2023 and three deaths in 2022.

  • Trump pardons DC officers convicted in death and cover up

    CNN
     —

President Donald Trump has issued a “full and unconditional pardon” to Washington, DC, police lieutenant Andrew Zabavsky and officer Terence Sutton for their roles in the death of 20-year-old Karon Hylton-Brown, a case that drew protests on the heels of the murder of George Floyd.

Prosecutors argued that in October 2020, Sutton and Zabavsky of the Metropolitan Police Department spotted Hylton-Brown driving a moped helmetless and pursued him at “unreasonable speeds” until he was eventually struck and killed by an uninvolved motorist.

As Hylton-Brown lay dying in the street, the officers covered up the incident, according to investigators, turning off their body cameras, tampering with the scene and misleading their commanding officers about the nature of the incident.

Defense lawyers have disputed details about the encounter and argued that the court threw out key evidence that gave the officers reasonable suspicion that Hylton-Brown was going to commit a crime. Kellen Dwyer, an attorney for Sutton, told CNN they expected to overturn the conviction on appeal.

Sutton was found guilty of second-degree murder, conspiracy to obstruct, and obstruction of justice and sentenced to 66 months in prison. The same jury found Zabavsky guilty of conspiracy to obstruct and obstruction of justice and he faced 48 months behind bars.

The DC Police Union had sought a pardon from the Trump White House for the two officers, who had been out on bail pending appeal of their case, and lawyers for the officers had been actively pursuing clemency from the administration, as well.

Zabavsky’s attorney, Christopher Zampogna, thanked Trump following the pardon, saying, “We’re very grateful to [President Trump] for doing it.” Zampogna said he and his client are working out the final details with the Department of Justice.

Sutton, for his part, told CNN that he was “just overwhelmed” and expressed his thanks to the president. “I want to go back to the police department and finish my career,” he added, admitting that he “has no clue” if it will be possible.

Dwyer added in a statement, “We are thrilled that President Trump ended this prosecution once and for all.”

Trump had referenced the potential pardons several times in recent days, including Tuesday at an unrelated press event at the White House when he was asked whether his decision to pardon the January 6, 2021, US Capitol rioters sent the message that it’s OK to assault police.

“No, the opposite. In fact, I’m going to be letting two officers from Washington police DC, I believe they’re from DC, but I just approved it,” Trump said. “They were arrested, put in jail for five years, because they went after an illegal, and I guess something happened where something went wrong and they arrested the two officers and put them in jail for going after a criminal. A rough criminal, by the way. And I’m actually releasing… no I’m the friend, I am the friend of police more than any president who’s ever been in this office.”

While he didn’t specifically reference Sutton or Zabavsky – and Hylton-Brown is a US citizen, police say, and not in the country illegally as the president claims – the comments mirrored prior remarks from Trump about the case. Trump had also posted a link on his Truth Social platform to an op-ed calling for the officers to be pardoned.

In this October 28, 2020, file photo, Washington Metropolitan Police Department police officers push back demonstrators outside of the fourth district police station in Washington after an officer was indicted on a murder charge for his role in a fatal vehicle accident during a police chase that has sparked two days of protests and clashes.

Hylton-Brown’s death and the subsequent coverup by the officers, which came just months after Floyd’s murder, sparked days of unrest and violent protest in the nation’s capital in October 2020.

Hylton-Brown’s mother, Karen Hylton, who was outspoken after her son’s death, told CNN before the pardon announcement that she was shocked and started crying when she learned of the potential pardons.

“Do not pardon these murderers,” Hylton had said, adding that she sent a letter to Trump on Tuesday. “I’m asking him, do not pardon them.”

Police officials and rank-and-file members of the department have argued that the officers faced excessive charges – noting especially the murder charge against Sutton – in a case where no contact was made between the officers’ vehicle and Hylton-Brown.

“It is my opinion that had this case not occurred on the heels of the George Floyd murder, these officers would not be facing decades of jail time,” former DC Police Chief Peter Newsham said at the time, according to CNN affiliate WUSA9 News.

But prosecutors on the case have stood by the charges and convictions.

“Public safety requires public trust,” US Attorney Matthew Graves said in a statement after the officers were sentenced in September. “Crimes like this erode that trust and are a disservice to the community and the thousands of officers who work incredibly hard, within the bounds of the Constitution, to keep us safe.”

“The community and fellow law enforcement officers deserve trusted officers that do not abuse their positions of trust and power or put the public at risk,” FBI Acting Special Agent in Charge David Geist added, saying the sentences “show the weight of the crimes and the significance of the criminal justice system and processes at work.”

This story has been updated with additional details.

CNN’s Alejandra Jaramillo and Donald Judd contributed to this report.

In a shocking move, President Trump has pardoned the DC police officers who were convicted in the death and subsequent cover-up of a civilian. This decision has sparked outrage and disbelief among many, with critics calling it a blatant abuse of power and a betrayal of justice.

The officers were found guilty of using excessive force and falsifying evidence in the case, which resulted in the tragic death of an innocent individual. Despite overwhelming evidence against them, Trump has chosen to grant them clemency, sending a dangerous message that police misconduct will not be held accountable.

This pardon is a stark reminder of the systemic issues within law enforcement and the need for meaningful reform. It highlights the need for transparency, accountability, and justice in our criminal justice system.

As the public grapples with this controversial decision, it serves as a call to action for all individuals to continue advocating for justice and holding those in power accountable. The fight for equality, fairness, and integrity in our society must continue, regardless of political affiliations or personal biases. Let us stand together in demanding justice for all and working towards a more just and equitable future.

The Late Heath Ledger Would Have Turned 45 Years Old Today — Us Looks Back at His Legacy 145

    J. Vespa/WireImage

It has been 17 years since Heath Ledger‘s sudden death and his legacy is still being remembered.

The Australian-born actor died at age 28 on January 22, 2008, following an accidental drug overdose. The toxicology report released following his sudden passing revealed that Ledger died from “acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine.”

Ledger was found dead after his housekeeper and massage therapist entered his New York City apartment in the late afternoon. Years later, director Stephen Gaghan revealed that he planned to turn Malcolm Gladwell book Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking into a movie. But after Ledger (who was attached to the project) died, the film never came to fruition.

Gaghan got a call from Ledger’s father, Kim Ledger, on the day of the actor’s death. (Ledger’s friend was also on the call.)

Heath Ledger Through the Years: From ’10 Things I Hate About You’ to ‘The Dark Knight’

“They were there with the body and our script was in bed with him, and your book was on the bedside table,” Gaghan recalled while talking to Gladwell during a February 2024 episode of the “Developmental Hell” podcast. “I think my number was on the script, like, written. These guys, as you can imagine, they are in shock, and they dialed that number, and I don’t know why.”

Gaghan said he was in an airport with his wife, Minnie Mortimer, when he got the call about Ledger.

“The emotion, what they were going through, I should not have been a party to in any way really, and yet as a human or as somebody who just cares, I just was there and I was listening and my wife was looking at me,” the director continued. “I remember her face and I was just like, I was speechless. I just listened and listened and listened. It was just really, really sad. And it’s still sad.”

Ledger rose to fame in the late 1990s after starring as Patrick Verona in 10 Things I Hate About You. He went on to appear in The Patriot, Monster’s Ball, A Knight’s Tale and The Brothers Grimm before playing Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain, a role which nabbed him a 2006 Academy Award nomination in the Best Actor category.

Ledger also famously played the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, which was released in July 2008 — months after Ledger’s death. The actor was posthumously awarded the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in February 2009, exactly 13 months after his passing.

Over the years, Ledger has been remembered positively by fellow Hollywood stars. His longtime girlfriend Michelle Williams has spoken at length about his death. (Ledger and Williams dated from 2005 to 2007, after meeting on the Brokeback Mountain set. They share a daughter, Matilda, who was born in October 2005.)

Michelle Williams’ Most Bittersweet Quotes About Heath Ledger and Their Daughter Matilda: ‘Every Time I Really Miss Him … I Just Look at Her’

“Every time I really miss him and wonder where he’s gone, I just look at her,” Williams told Vogue in September 2009, referring to their daughter. “I can talk about grief, because that’s mine, about single parenting, about trying to balance work and kids. But what I don’t have to talk about is what happened between Heath and me in our relationship. Brokeback Mountain was an unrepeatable moment in time, a very charmed time in my life. I was in love. I was in a movie I was proud to be a part of and with a beautiful, brand new baby. Everything was good in that moment.”

10 Things I Hate About You costar Julia Stiles even remembered his “magnetic presence” in a past interview.

“He had a zest for life and just was like always, he was never checked out,” the actress recalled. “He was always totally engaged with everybody. Really interesting, remarkable person and actor.”

It was obvious that Ledger’s impact is still major in Hollywood when director Nolan accepted the Best Director Golden Globe for Oppenheimer in 2024.

“The only time I’ve ever been on this stage before was accepting one of these on behalf of our dear friend Heath Ledger, and that was complicated and challenging for me,” Nolan said, in part, during his speech. “And in the middle of speaking, I glanced up and Robert Downey Jr. caught my eye and gave me a look of love and support — the same look he’s giving me now, the same love and support he’s shown so many people in our community over so many years.”

Ledger’s portrayal of the iconic character, the Joker, in “The Dark Knight” earned him a posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, solidifying his place in cinematic history. His dedication to his craft and his ability to completely immerse himself in his roles set him apart from his peers and left a lasting impact on the film industry.

Carey Hart opened up about stepping away from racing after the tragic death of his younger brother Anthony.

On a new episode of Special Forces, Hart, 49, said it’s “hard to put into words” how his brother’s death in 2008 impacted him and that it forced him to reconsider his priorities between racing and his family with Pink.

“I’ve always cherished family, and it’s kind of hard to put into words the impact, like the death of my brother was a really, really hard and long grieving period,” said Hart, who shares two children with the pop star.

“The mental impact for me is just trying to turn something that’s so negative into a positive and I’ve been able to refocus that on my children.”

Anthony was just 21 when he died in 2008. Like his brother, Anthony was a motocross rider and was preparing for a race when he crashed during a practice run at the Stafford Motor Speedway in Connecticut, New York, E! News reported at the time.

He slid up the track and hit the guardrail head first and had a head injury.”

“I had to get my brother’s back. I had to plan the funeral. I had to call his mother like I had to do all this stuff and not miss a beat. And I think I unpack things over the next, you know, three or four or five years on my own time.”

Hart revealed that the experience deeply affected his relationship with his father, who was a “huge support system when I was younger,” he said.

Pink and Hart got married in 2006 after dating for five years. The couple met in August 2001 at the X Games in Philadelphia.

Although they were estranged at the time of Anthony’s death, Pink quickly came to his side to offer her full support after the tragedy. PEOPLE reported at the time that Pink joined Hart in Las Vegas to celebrate the life of his brother. She sang and dedicated a song to Anthony, and Hart joined her to toast his memory.

They welcomed their first child together, Willow Sage Hart, on June 2, 2011. And on Dec. 26, 2012, the singer and racer welcomed their son, Jameson Moon Hart.

In 2021, the singer told PEOPLE, “We’ve really grown up together.”

In an emotional Instagram post, Carey shared his feelings about the loss and the impact it had on his life.

Carey admitted that he struggled to come to terms with Tony’s passing and found himself in a “long grieving period” that affected him deeply. He described feeling lost and overwhelmed by the pain of losing his brother, who he described as his “best friend” and someone who always had his back.

Despite the challenges he faced during this time, Carey expressed gratitude for the support of his family and friends, who helped him through the darkest moments of his grief. He also acknowledged the importance of seeking help and talking about his feelings, rather than bottling them up.

Through his post, Carey hoped to raise awareness about the impact of losing a loved one and the importance of allowing oneself to grieve fully. He encouraged others who may be struggling with similar feelings to reach out for help and support, emphasizing that healing is possible with time and the right resources.

  • Cori Clingman faces 13 charges related to Khyree Jackson’s death

A driver involved in the crash that killed Minnesota Vikings rookie Khyree Jackson and two others was arrested Thursday and charged with 13 counts, including DUI and criminally negligent vehicular manslaughter, the Prince George’s County (Maryland) state attorney said.

Cori Clingman, who was 23 at the time of the accident, remained in custody as of Thursday evening and will have a bond hearing scheduled soon, attorney Aisha Braveboy said.

“This was a horrific tragedy that should not have occurred,” Braveboy said. “This really just starts our fight to get justice.”

The three-car crash occurred at 3:14 a.m. on July 6, 2024. Isaiah Hazel and Anthony Lytton Jr., two high school football teammates of Jackson’s, were also killed.

Hazel, 23, played at Maryland and Charlotte. Lytton, 24, played at Florida State and Penn State.

Maryland State Police said last summer that Hazel was driving a Dodge Charger with Jackson in the passenger seat when their car was struck by an Infiniti Q50 driven by Clingman, who was attempting to change lanes at a high speed. Clingman’s car also struck a Chevrolet Impala. The Charger left the road and struck multiple tree stumps. According to police, Jackson and Hazel were pronounced dead at the scene, while Lytton was transported to a hospital before being pronounced dead by hospital personnel.

Clingman, the two passengers in her car and the driver of the Impala were uninjured.

Braveboy said Thursday that she could not add many details because the investigation is “ongoing.” She did not reveal Clingman’s exact blood alcohol content but confirmed it was “at least” above the legal limit of 0.08% in Maryland.

Jackson, who was one month away from his 25th birthday at the time of his death, was the Vikings’ fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft. He attended spring OTAs and minicamp and endeared himself to a veteran team with his enthusiasm and confidence.

The Vikings donated $20,000 toward expenses for Jackson’s funeral and also paid out his $827,148 signing bonus to his estate.

A contingent of players and staff members attended his funeral, during which coach Kevin O’Connell was one of the featured speakers. Players wore a “KJ” sticker on the back of their helmets throughout season, while coaches and staff members wore pins with the same initials.

“You felt [Jackson] had such a laser focus on what his mission and what his plan was,” O’Connell said during training camp. “It really showed up in the spring. He had a very, very good spring and was really looking forward to coming back to training camp and being well on his way [and] on that path to having a big impact on our team for this year. Just some of my personal dialogue with him and the work he was putting in throughout the summer, you just knew he was going to come back and do that.”

In an ESPN feature story that aired earlier this month, O’Connell said he “fell in love” with Jackson during his brief time with the team this spring and that players and coaches rallied around his memory.

“We’re all grieving and we all grieve in our own ways,” O’Connell said. “But there’s not thing more powerful than grieving together, and we’re going to do it in the way that best honors Khyree and his family.”

Cori Clingman, a 27-year-old woman from Detroit, is facing 13 charges in connection to the death of 9-year-old Khyree Jackson. Jackson was found dead in his home on February 15th, and an investigation revealed that he had been severely abused and neglected.

Clingman, who was dating Jackson’s father at the time of the boy’s death, has been charged with multiple counts of child abuse, torture, and murder. Authorities believe that she played a significant role in the abuse and neglect that ultimately led to Jackson’s tragic death.

The community has been shocked and outraged by the details of this case, and many are calling for justice to be served for young Khyree Jackson. As the legal proceedings move forward, we can only hope that those responsible for his death are held accountable for their actions. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Khyree Jackson during this difficult time.

  • Why Rick Astley Waited for His Parents’ Death to Write His Memoir (Exclusive)

Rick Astley had been approached about penning a memoir for decades but always resisted — until now.

The singer was a 21-year-old playing local gigs in his small English hometown in 1987 when he released “Never Gonna Give You Up,” a classic ’80s pop earworm that quickly climbed the charts worldwide and skyrocketed the performer into superstardom, almost overnight.

Two decades later, thanks to one of the internet’s earliest viral moments — a prank where someone sends a link to the track’s music video disguised as something else, dubbed “Rickrolling” — the song was introduced to a new generation, reigniting the star’s popularity as the video hit over a billion and a half views on YouTube.

Now 58, Astley is telling all about his humble beginnings, the darker sides of instant fame and a nearly three-decade-long marriage to wife Lene Bausager in a new memoir, Never: The Autobiography, out Jan. 21.

In an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE, Astley reveals that he was first approached about a book deal in his 20s — and then again when “Never Gonna Give You Up” garnered its viral moment in the 2000s. But he held off because of his parents. “I wanted to wait until my mom and dad weren’t alive anymore because I wanted to be completely honest about my childhood and didn’t want to upset them,” he says.

In the memoir, Astley describes his difficult upbringing. He witnessed his father physically attacking his mother at a young age, and after his parents split when he was 4, he lost his emotional connection to them both.

“Whatever I went through with them, I don’t blame them,” the singer and author tells PEOPLE. “I don’t think it was their fault. It was just the way it was.”

The memoir charts the young singer’s earliest experiences with music — playing his first gig at a school disco, entering into local Battle of the Bands competitions and eventually getting plucked by budding producer Pete Waterman, who would help release “Never Gonna Give You Up.” But the story of his music career wouldn’t be complete without the details of his childhood, says Astley. “I just wanted to be really honest about the way that I was brought up because I think that’s what pushed me to want love and attention in different areas that I didn’t get as a kid.”

“It wasn’t just emotional and mental — it was a physical escape,” Astley says of his early relationship to music. “It was like, ‘If I can get a career in this, I can set my boundaries. I can set the rules. I can buy a house. I can go live somewhere that I want to live and not live under my dad’s roof.’ ”

Astley acknowledges the irony of “craving stability” out of fame — especially when the life of a rock star is often associated with drugs, sex and money. “I’m not saying I didn’t crave some of those things,” he adds. “But I was trying to fill a bit of a hole that I think had been left by my childhood.”

Now, a handful of awards and several platinum albums later, Astley is a parent himself — sharing 32-year-old daughter Amelia with his longtime wife. Not long after her birth, the singer temporarily stepped back from making music, which he says was “partly” to make more time for being a present parent.

“How do you become somebody who can be really, really famous and be a parent who is physically, mentally and emotionally there?” Astley wonders. “Fame is about being selfish and being a bit of an egomaniac at times, and it’s a hard thing to turn off when you go home.”

He acknowledges that Amelia “never really knew” her grandfather and “wasn’t close to” her grandmother, given the strained relationships Astley had to his own parents. But he was very forthcoming with his daughter about the years he spent in therapy in his 20s and 30s processing his difficult upbringing. “I think it’s super valuable to talk about that,” he says.

Still, the English rocker says his daughter has “struggled” with the release of his autobiography — especially some of the details of his life he had never gotten around to telling her, waiting for a “moment when that’s an appropriate conversation to have,” that are now available for the world to read.

“Parenting, man, that’s a big one,” he concludes. “You just have to do the best you can do.”

In a recent exclusive interview, 80s pop sensation Rick Astley revealed the shocking reason behind why he waited for his parents’ death to write his highly-anticipated memoir.

Astley, known for his hit song “Never Gonna Give You Up,” explained that he felt a sense of obligation to protect his parents’ privacy and respect their wishes while they were alive. He wanted to ensure that he could share his story freely without causing any distress or embarrassment to his family.

“It was a difficult decision to make, but I knew that I needed to wait until my parents had passed away before delving into certain aspects of my life,” Astley shared. “I wanted to be able to be completely honest and open in my memoir without holding back or censoring myself.”

The singer-songwriter revealed that his memoir will touch on personal struggles, career challenges, and the highs and lows of fame. Astley hopes that by sharing his story, he can inspire and connect with his fans on a deeper level.

Fans can expect an intimate and candid look into Astley’s life when his memoir is released later this year. Stay tuned for more updates on this highly-anticipated book.
