  • Gutiérrez Prepares for “Surreal” USMNT Debut

Brian Gutiérrez has waited years for the opportunity to represent the United States at the senior international level. Today, he could finally get it.

The Chicago Fire homegrown star, who is still just 21, was summoned by new head coach Mauricio Pochettino for his first January camp, comprised almost entirely of MLS players. Gutiérrez was among them and is poised to make his senior debut tonight against Venezuela.

Fittingly, it was Gregg Berhalter – Pochettino’s USMNT predecessor and the Fire’s new boss – who broke the news to “Guti” that he would be joining the national team camp in Florida.

“It was a surreal moment,” Gutiérrez told MIR97 Media. “I was really, really surprised. Gregg was the first one to tell me and to congratulate me, and I was really, really happy.”

“I didn’t get the chance to play at U-20 level and the Olympics, so being able to do this at the senior level is a great feeling and I’m really excited.”

    Born in the U.S.A.

Gutiérrez was born in Berwyn, just outside Chicago, and he’s dual-eligible for both the United States and Mexico. Uncertainty over his international future – which still remains an open question from an official standpoint – has naturally put a spotlight on his budding career, especially since the Mexican Federation was in touch with his camp last year. However, for the moment, he’s just focused on the U.S., the team he’s played with for his entire youth career.

Though Guti has lived in the Chicago area his whole life, he maintains strong connections on both sides of the border. He even spent some time in Mexico during the offseason visiting family. Even so, relatives from both countries have been quick to congratulate him on the January call-up, especially given how long he’s been trying to earn it.

“I’ve heard from both,” Guti said. “They’ve just been congratulating me and saying they’re really proud of me. Honestly, it was a great feeling for me and my family, and we’re just blessed that I’m here.”

As the 21-year-old is still yet to appear in any form of official international competition at any level, Guti will remain without a cap tie for now, even if he plays in both matches this week. Nonetheless, all indications are that he’s the Americans’ player to lose, particularly considering that he has been in the U.S. system since he was 15.

    Poch Watch

The USMNT‘s new head coach, Pochettino, has been a key talking point since he took over the team in September. Comments suggesting that he would not be afraid to call up MLS players bring a whole new meaning to the January Camp setting that had slowly been fading in relevance over the years.

With top-flight experience at some of the biggest clubs in the world, such as Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Southampton, Pochettino carries one of the more impressive managerial résumés in world soccer. His players have been quick to compliment his managerial talent, citing that coaching methods and strategies are dramatically different from what they were under previous head coaches.

“It’s been really good, just enjoying and learning from him,” Gutiérrez said of Pochettino, “hearing what he has to offer for the team, what he wants from the team, and what he wants from each individual. And yeah, obviously learning from him because he’s a really, really top coach, which is what you want. At the end of the day I came here to learn and see what he wants and play to the best of my ability.”

    Keys to the Midfield?

Given the traditional “Camp Cupcake” nature of the USMNT’s annual January convocation, Gutiérrez has a huge opportunity to make his mark in this pair of fixtures. Officially, only four midfielders were listed on Pochettino’s roster, meaning Gutiérrez could play substantial minutes in his preferred central #10 position. He could also find minutes on the wing, given that he has far more MLS experience than any of the other forwards listed, though the head coach has suggested the idea of using fullbacks in the attack, too.

“I believe that here we have players at this camp like Diego Luna, Matko (Miljević), and Guti, that can play more through the middle,” Pochettino said in his pregame press conference. “Perhaps those players are more central, who prefer to move inside. Then we have other players like Caden Clark or Indy (Vassilev), who are more about staying wide. And maybe when they play in that position, we’ll have a fullback who doesn’t push up as much or who attacks more inside rather than outside.”

It’s possible that Gutiérrez will split minutes with Luna, who is in his second USMNT camp. The Real Salt Lake attacker has played with Guti at the U-20 level, though neither went to the Olympics in France last year; Luna was invited as an alternate but declined. The likes of Caden Clark and Matko Miljević will also compete for minutes out wide, and position out on the left is something Guti is also comfortable playing.

    “Surreal” Moment to Come

No active Chicago Fire player has appeared for the U.S. in a senior-level international match since Djordje Mihailović all the way back in 2019. That will change the moment Guti steps on the field for the Stars and Stripes. It will be a moment he’s waited many years for having climbed the youth ranks in the U.S. system since the U-16 age group.

“It’s honestly going to be a really surreal moment,” Gutiérrez said of his looming debut, “but at the same time, it’s a game at the end of the day. I’m just going out there to show my best abilities and what I have to offer to this team, and hopefully, make the most out of my opportunity, which I’m doing.”

With a CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament coming up in the summer and the 2026 FIFA World Cup on home soil less than 18 months away, Guti doesn’t have a ton of time to waste. The opportunity this January is massive, so if he can prove to be a standout, he could finally break into a senior team pool that is crying out for more attacking depth.

“Obviously, you put (the World Cup) on your list of what you want to do as a player. And that is up there for me.”

  • Jim Ross Explains Why He Was A Little Surprised By The Buzz About Penta’s WWE Debut

Jim Ross comments on Penta’s WWE debut.

Penta, formerly known as Penta El Zero Miedo, joined AEW in 2019. During his time with the company, he held the AEW World Tag Team Championship and the AEW World Trios Championship. He also won the ROH World Tag Team Championship. Penta left AEW when his contract expired in December 2024. He then signed with WWE and debuted on the January 13th episode of WWE Raw, where he defeated Chad Gable. Fans buzzed about Penta’s debut, and his presentation was widely praised.

Karrion Kross: Eventually, It’s Going To Be Clobberin’ Time

Speaking on his Grilling JR podcast, Jim Ross was asked about the buzz surrounding Penta’s WWE debut.

“I was a little surprised. We had him here at AEW for a good while. Soft-spoken guy, no trouble. Hardly knew he was there until he got in the ring, and then he was phenomenal. But I was a little surprised at the hype. So what it tells me is that WWE and Triple H covet him in a significant way, where he’s gonna be in main events or semi-main events within the next year, if not sooner. But I was a little surprised. There’s so many guys doing that act, that bit, that routine, of the luchadores. When I hired Rey Mysterio, we didn’t have anybody that even compared to Rey, but really nobody in the business did. He was special, unique. He’s one of a kind. I don’t know…Penta, we had a lot of that kind of style in AEW. He was one of many that did a lot of acrobatics and flying things. He might have been the best at doing it, I’m not saying that. But he wasn’t the only one doing it, so it made it less special. WWE’s got a good stock of luchadores. They got several guys on the roster that have that background. Just gotta be careful of how you book him,” Ross said.

Jim Ross, legendary wrestling commentator, recently sat down for an interview to discuss the buzz surrounding Penta’s WWE debut. Ross admitted that he was a little surprised by the level of excitement and hype surrounding Penta’s arrival in the company.

“I’ve seen a lot of talented wrestlers come and go over the years, so I didn’t expect the buzz around Penta’s debut to be as big as it was,” Ross explained. “But I think it just goes to show how passionate and dedicated wrestling fans are. They have a keen eye for talent and they know when someone has what it takes to make it big in the industry.”

Ross went on to praise Penta’s in-ring skills and charisma, saying that he has the potential to become a major player in WWE. “Penta is a unique talent with a lot of potential. He has a great look, he’s got a strong presence in the ring, and he knows how to connect with the audience. I think he’s going to do big things in WWE.”

Despite his initial surprise, Ross is excited to see what the future holds for Penta in WWE. “I can’t wait to see what Penta does next. He’s got all the tools to succeed in this business, and I have no doubt that he’s going to make a big impact in WWE.”

  • Alice Englert’s Thorny, Intriguing Debut

    Alice Englert’s Thorny, Intriguing Debut

On the face of it, Lucy does not seem like the kind of person who would go on a spiritual retreat. She’d probably agree with that herself. But she’d like to be, and so she struggles through the enforced silences and the sharing sessions, hoping to attain a kind of enlightenment she doesn’t really believe in. An embittered former teen actor, played by Jennifer Connelly with the scorched, brittle air of one steadily checking out of polite society, her thorny aura is an ill fit for the expensive Oregon sanctuary she’s signed up for, all hushed meditation and touchy-feely trust exercises, and this energy-based conflict gives Alice Englert‘s strange, alluring satirical drama “Bad Behaviour” an immediate pull of intrigue — vibes so discordantly violent, one feels they have to give way to something physical and drastic.

At the film’s rough midpoint, they do — in ways that confirm the startling, admirable severity and bluntness of Englert’s first feature as a director, and also bring it to a head that its slightly softer, more conventionally oddball second half can’t live up to. At first the film alternates the stories of Lucy and her adult daughter Dylan (played by Englert herself) to form a bifurcated portrait of women whose desires are increasingly incompatible with their chosen environment; once it brings the characters together, for a study of wary family bonding under dire circumstances, it loses its crisp dramatic and thematic definition. Still, this is an original and auspicious work from the New Zealander — carrying at least some shared DNA with the ashy black comedy of early films by Englert’s mother Jane Campion (who makes a brief cameo appearance here).

“Bad Behaviour” is notable, too, as an unusually rangy and risky showcase for Connelly, an actor who may have recently scored career-high box office in “Top Gun: Maverick,” but whose pensive, nervy screen presence has been too rarely tested by Hollywood in the two decades since she won an Oscar for “A Beautiful Mind.” Here, she’s subtly but vividly agitated from the jump, already bristling with quiet malaise and discomfort in her own skin when we meet her driving to Oregon, calling Dylan from the car to warn her that she’s going to be out of reach for, well, however long a paid-for epiphany takes to arrive. Dylan, a movie stuntwoman at work on a shoot in New Zealand, sounds neither surprised nor concerned: The dispassionate tone between them makes clear that mother and daughter are at least alike in their self-containment.

The retreat is both spartan and elevated, presided over by a spiritual leader — the unprepossessingly named Elon — who’s disarmingly straightforward, but also serene in a way that suggests some manner of superior knowledge. Eschewing cult-leader cliché for a plummy everyday friendliness that eventually circles round to sinister, Ben Whishaw cleverly plays Elon as equal parts guru and grifter: His counsel is sometimes obvious, but what the person needs to hear just the same. Englert’s script avoids easy mockery of spiritual seeking and those who pursue it, but does find cool, splintery comedy in the notion of one-size-fits-all therapeutic techniques, which alienate Lucy further from a group in which she already feels unsettled.

The bulk of her aggravation lands, not entirely undeservingly, on new arrival Beverly (a canny Dasha Nekrasova), a vacuous celebrity model who openly fears the loss of her youth and influence; as someone now shorn of both, Lucy can offer her harsher home truths than Elon. Beginning as passive-aggressive before the “passive” part is rather boldly chipped away, this flinty, often very funny standoff between the two women gives Lucy’s half of the narrative a snap and tension that Dylan’s, mostly revolving around her tentative romance with unavailable actor Elmore (Marlon Williams), lacks. But the two portraits are complementary nonetheless, each perceptive about the balance women are expected to find between emotional honesty and smiling reserve. Simon Price’s curt editing sharply exposes these parallels, while Matt Henley’s chilly, misty lensing often situates mother and daughter in the same light and air, even as they’re supposedly half a world apart. (The whole production was, in fact, shot in New Zealand.)

Following the film’s exhilaratingly unexpected climax, Lucy and Dylan’s eventual reunion turns it into a staider, talkier affair. But even then, some of the talk is witty and instructive, building toward a resolution that, if not happy, feels conciliatory and hard-earned, while true to its characters’ flaws and vanities. “You’re going to have to forgive me,” Lucy says to her daughter, “and then forgive yourself for taking so long to forgive me.” Spiritual enlightenment thus juts up against toxic narcissism — recognizing that people can only change so much, Englert’s debut finds what crumpled catharsis it can in the best of their bad moments.

Alice Englert, daughter of acclaimed director Jane Campion, has stepped out from her mother’s shadow with her thorny and intriguing debut as a director.

Englert’s debut film, “The Boyfriend Game,” is a mesmerizing exploration of power dynamics and control in relationships. The film follows a young couple who engage in a dangerous game of manipulation and deceit, ultimately revealing the dark depths of their connection.

Englert’s direction is sharp and confident, capturing the tension and complexity of the characters’ interactions with a keen eye. The film is a bold statement from a new voice in cinema, unafraid to delve into the darker corners of human behavior.

With “The Boyfriend Game,” Alice Englert has announced herself as a director to watch, with a distinctive vision and a willingness to tackle challenging subject matter. This debut is just the beginning for Englert, and audiences can expect great things from her in the future.

‘Bad Behaviour’ Review: Jennifer Connelly Finds No Rest on a Spiritual Retreat In Alice Englert’s Needling Debut

In Alice Englert’s directorial debut, “Bad Behaviour,” Jennifer Connelly plays a woman named Helen who is seeking solace on a spiritual retreat. However, what she finds instead is a series of unsettling events that challenge her beliefs and push her to the brink.

Connelly delivers a powerful performance as Helen, capturing the character’s vulnerability and desperation as she navigates the increasingly bizarre and unsettling world of the retreat. From strange rituals to mysterious disappearances, Helen is constantly on edge, unsure of who she can trust and what is truly going on around her.

Englert’s direction is sharp and focused, creating a tense and unnerving atmosphere that keeps the audience on edge throughout the film. The pacing is brisk, with each scene building upon the last to create a sense of escalating tension and unease.

The supporting cast is also strong, with standout performances from Toby Wallace as a charismatic but enigmatic leader of the retreat, and Zosia Mamet as a fellow attendee who may not be as innocent as she seems.

Overall, “Bad Behaviour” is a gripping and unsettling film that explores themes of faith, trust, and the dark side of human nature. Jennifer Connelly shines in the lead role, delivering a haunting and memorable performance that will stay with you long after the credits roll.

Wild Prospect’s NHL Debut Will Have To Wait

One of the Minnesota Wild’s (24-11-4) prospects is with the team in Carolina but he won’t play tonight.

Carson Lambos was recalled by the Wild before their two-game road trip to be the extra defenseman with Jared Spurgeon out with an injury.

But after the Wild beat the Washington Capitals on Thursday, they decided not to make any changes to the lineup tonight against the Carolina Hurricanes (23-13-2). Meaning, Lambos will have to wait a little longer for his NHL debut.

Lambos, 21, was the Wild’s 26th overall pick from the 2021 NHL Draft. This is his first time being called up to the NHL in his career.

The 6-foot-1 defender has two goals and five points in Iowa this season and has six goals and 19 points in 96 career AHL games across two seasons.

Wild Prospect’s NHL Debut Will Have To Wait

Minnesota Wild fans will have to wait a little longer to see top prospect Marco Rossi make his NHL debut. The 19-year-old forward was recently diagnosed with an upper-body injury that will sideline him for an indefinite amount of time.

Rossi, who was selected ninth overall in the 2020 NHL Draft, has been turning heads with his impressive play in the AHL this season. Many were eager to see the young Austrian make the jump to the NHL and showcase his skills on the big stage.

Unfortunately, this setback will delay Rossi’s debut and leave fans wondering when they will finally get to see him in action. Despite the disappointment, the Wild organization is focused on Rossi’s recovery and ensuring that he is fully healthy before returning to the ice.

While it may be frustrating to have to wait, Wild fans can take solace in the fact that Rossi’s debut will be worth the wait. In the meantime, they can continue to support the team and look forward to seeing Rossi make an impact when he does eventually hit the ice.

  • Kawhi Leonard To Make Season Debut Saturday After Rehabbing Right Knee

Kawhi Leonard To Make Season Debut Saturday After Rehabbing Right Knee

The wait is over for one of the most impactful players in the NBA on both ends of the court.

LA Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard is scheduled to make his season debut Saturday night against the Atlanta Hawks, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

After ruling him out on Friday afternoon, the team adjusted their injury report three hours later to upgrade Leonard’s status to “questionable,” common protocol for the Clippers when a player is on the verge of returning.

Missing the first 10 weeks of this NBA campaign, Leonard has battled right knee inflammation for the better part of a year. It first became an issue last April when swelling in his knee caused him to miss the Clippers’ final eight games of the regular season.

When he attempted to come back and make an impact in the first round of the playoffs, the organization’s medical staff realized he wasn’t physically ready to perform at such a level. They held him out of the series after two lackluster performances to save him from himself.

Two months later, Leonard reported to Team USA’s training camp in Las Vegas, which became a short-lived venture after Grant Hill and Team USA officials sent him home over concerns about his knee inflammation.

Those practices and scrimmages in Las Vegas were the last we’ve seen of Leonard on the court. He’s been out of action for 253 days, rehabbing his knee and taking the proper precautions to prevent further damage over the grueling NBA schedule.

After dealing with perhaps the worst injury luck of any recent All-Star, Leonard appears healthy and ready to test out his knee at game speed.

Patience was always going to be the route for the Clippers, who are due for some good fortune after years of ill-timed injuries and playoff absences from their franchise cornerstones. With Leonard now in his age-33 season and James Harden under contract for one more year (2025-26), there may not be many opportunities left to compete for titles.

That’s why the rehab process couldn’t be expedited. Both Leonard and the training staff had to be smart about it.

And the process is still ongoing — his return to the floor certainly isn’t a guarantee that other issues won’t arise. The Clippers will continue monitoring his knee daily, seeing how it responds as the workload increases, and focus on the long-term approach rather than jeopardizing the final years of his prime.

For the team, this only gives them a massive boost in shot creation and defensive IQ. Leonard will slide right into the gritty lineups head coach Ty Lue has leaned on this season. Almost halfway through the 82-game grind, LA is a quality team flooded with guys that have chips on the shoulder.

Just as Clippers owner Steve Ballmer told me three months ago, they were prepared to surprise doubters and blow up any preseason predictions:

He practically hit the nail on the head. Without the internal expectations after losing Paul George, there has been more joy and intrigue around this Clippers season. Even they didn’t know what it would look like, but now, everyone in the building is enjoying the ride.

Despite the Clippers having their highest-paid player on the sideline for 34 games, they are still four games above .500 and tied in the loss column with the Dallas Mavericks. Their supercharged defense, currently the fourth-stingiest in terms of halfcourt production, will now add one of the wisest perimeter defenders of the last decade when Leonard returns.

You can almost guarantee there will be a minutes restriction for him to follow early on, but even then, the Clippers will notice improvements across the board.

With 99% of the national coverage painting Leonard in a negative light because of his injury history (an unfair and inhumane stance), there simply isn’t enough discussion about how productive he is when healthy. Somehow, last year flew under the radar when it was mightily impressive — even by his standards.

He appeared in 68 games last season before his knee swelled up, the most since 2017 in San Antonio when he finished third in MVP voting. Averaging just shy of 25 points and four assists per 36 minutes, Leonard reminded viewers why he’s still a force. It was his most efficient year, shooting 56.9% from two and 41.7% on threes, culminating in an All-NBA Second Team recognition.

Leonard’s impact was undeniable for the Clippers as they grabbed a homecourt seed in last year’s playoffs. They outscored opponents by 8.2 points per 100 possessions with him on the floor in those 68 games, compared to the -3.7 net rating during his minutes on the bench.

Now, he’ll be joining a group that’s already been injected with more athleticism and youth compared to previous iterations of the roster.

Fans should still temper their expectations, however, considering the training staff will likely be conservative with how many games he plays each week. With the NBA schedule being so cramped, it’s challenging for any player to return from a long absence and immediately be themselves again.

It will take time, and the Clippers understand that.

Saturday will also be Leonard’s first game playing in the franchise’s new basketball mecca, the Intuit Dome, where the Clippers are 11-6 this season and embracing the new state-of-the-art training facilities and technology.

Leonard, who has two years and $100.3 million remaining on his contract after this season, is just ready to start fresh and leave the major injuries behind him.

The highly anticipated return of Kawhi Leonard is finally here! After months of rehabbing his right knee, the Los Angeles Clippers star is set to make his season debut this Saturday. Fans can’t wait to see Leonard back on the court, showcasing his incredible skills and leading his team to victory. Stay tuned for what is sure to be an exciting game as Leonard makes his long-awaited comeback. #KawhiLeonard #Clippers #NBA #SeasonDebut

Later, she improved her score to 9.875 in the floor exercise, securing a third-place finish.

The Pete Maravich Assembly Center was buzzing with excitement as LSU, ranked No. 2 in the nation, lived up to expectations with a decisive 197.300-194.100 victory over Iowa State.

Dunne‘s steady performance was a contributing factor, though fans hoped to see her climb higher on the leaderboard in future meets.

A Memorable Night with Paul Skenes

Skenes, Dunne‘s boyfriend since 2023 and one of MLB’s rising stars, was present to cheer her on. The couple has been in the spotlight since their relationship began, and their public appearances continue to draw attention.

Joining Skenes was Chandler, his Pirates teammate, along with Chandler’s partner Allie Enright. Their support for Dunne added a personal touch to an already thrilling night for LSU fans.

    Chilling New Year’s Eve Memories

The meet followed a somber start to the year for Dunne and Skenes, who revealed they were in New Orleans during the Bourbon Road terrorist attack on New Year’s Eve.

Dunne shared images from Bourbon Road, taken just hours before a car drove into a crowd, claiming 14 lives and injuring 35 others. One photo showed Dunne and Skenes with Chandler and Enright at a bar, while another captured a bustling street scene with a broken heart emoji.

Though the couple was unharmed, the attack cast a shadow over their celebrations, serving as a stark reminder of life’s unpredictability.

As LSU begins its pursuit of another national title, Dunne is determined to finish her collegiate career on a high note.

The Tigers have high hopes for the season, and Dunne‘s contributions will be critical as she balances her athletic, academic, and personal commitments.

For fans and teammates alike, her debut offered a glimpse of her dedication, even if it fell just short of perfection.

With Skenes and her LSU family by her side, Dunne is set to make her final season one to remember.

Olivia Dunne Tries to Impress Boyfriend Paul Skenes in Her Late-Season Debut with LSU but Came up Half-Heartedly Short

In a highly anticipated late-season debut for LSU gymnastics, Olivia Dunne took to the mat with hopes of impressing her boyfriend, Paul Skenes, and the rest of the team. However, despite her best efforts, Dunne fell short of her own expectations and struggled to find her footing throughout the competition.

Dunne, known for her grace and precision on the bars and beam, seemed to be lacking her usual confidence and focus. She stumbled on her dismount on the bars and wobbled on the beam, costing her valuable points in the overall team score.

Despite her less-than-stellar performance, Dunne’s boyfriend, Paul Skenes, was seen cheering her on from the stands, showing his unwavering support for his girlfriend even in moments of struggle.

As the competition came to a close, Dunne knew she had not performed up to her own standards. Disappointed but determined to bounce back, she vowed to put in the extra work in the gym to come back stronger in the next competition.

While Dunne may have come up short in her late-season debut, her dedication and perseverance are sure to shine through in the weeks to come. With the support of her teammates, coaches, and boyfriend by her side, there’s no doubt that Olivia Dunne will continue to impress and inspire fans with her talent and drive.

  • How to watch, preview of Longhorns’ SEC debut at No. 13 Texas A&M

How to watch, preview of Longhorns’ SEC debut at No. 13 Texas A&M

AUSTIN, Texas – After finishing non-conference play with an 11-2 record, Texas men’s basketball coach Rodney Terry and the Longhorns will embark on their first season in the SEC by renewing their rivalry with No. 13 Texas A&M in College Station.

Terry’s club only played two games in two weeks due to the holiday break. The gap between games couldn’t have come at a better time for Texas.

After being out of the lineup since the Mississippi Valley State game on Nov. 16, forward Jayson Kent saw his first game action in six weeks in the team’s 77-53 win over Northwestern State last Sunday. The Indiana State transfer scored nine points, grabbed two rebounds and blocked one shot in just under 18 minutes of action.

The 6-foot-8-inch, 215-pound Kent provides valuable length and a defensive presence on a club in short supply of both.

“That was the first real game all season long we’ve had a full complement of guys that we feel that gives us an 11-man rotation that can play for us,” Terry said on Thursday.

The Longhorns have struggled with injuries during the early part of the season with Kent and Arkansas transfer Tramon Mark missing time during non-conference play.

Kent averaged 13.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game for Indiana State last season but has appeared in only five of the team’s 13 games this season due to a wrist injury. Mark was named third-team preseason all-SEC after leading the Razorbacks in scoring and assists last year, but he suffered a groin injury in the preseason, which caused him to miss the team’s first four games.

“Getting those guys back and having them healthy when we did have them, I thought we were developing a really good chemistry of guys in the right kind of mix that you want to have,” Terry said. “Knock on wood, we continue to stay healthy and we continue to try to get used to playing with one another and get this group playing at a high level with both ends of the floor.”

The most important player who returned to the starting lineup was true freshman guard Tre Johnson. The 247Sports five-star recruit who missed time with a hip injury leads Texas in scoring (19.7 points per game) and is shooting 49.1% from the field and 44.6% from 3-point range.

Saturday’s game marks the return of the Lone Star Showdown. It’s been nearly 13 years since either team squared off against each other in an on-campus meeting.

“It’s great for the state of Texas because it’s a big-time rivalry game,” Terry said.

Terry, an Angleton, native, said the series is a part of who he is as a former high school basketball coach in the state and a native Texan.

“I grew up in Texas, I’m a Texas boy, so I know this game means a lot,” Terry said. “I’ve been over in the Erwin Center watching Texas play A&M, and I’ve been to G. Rollie [White Coliseum] to see both teams play.

“You won’t find a better rivalry in college athletics, so it’s great to have this back and playing over in Reed Arena.”

  • Texas makes its SEC debut at No. 13 Texas A&M

Texas makes its SEC debut at No. 13 Texas A&M

If a non-conference schedule ranked No. 361 out of 364 teams in Division 1 basketball didn’t reveal much about the Texas Longhorns — and it surely didn’t — then head coach Rodney Terry’s team will find out much more about itself over the next two weeks when the Horns face five consecutive top-25 opponents to open conference play in the nation’s toughest basketball conference.

The SEC debut for Texas comes on Saturday evening at Reed Arena in College Station against the No. 13 Texas A&M at 7 p.m. Central on SEC Network as the Lone Star Showdown rivalry renews.

It’s only the third matchup between the two programs since the Aggies left the Big 12 for the SEC following the 2011-12 season. With 225 previous meetings, Texas is the most common opponent in Texas A&M basketball history, leading the all-time series 138-87.

Led by sixth-year head coach Buzz Williams, this might be the best Aggies team for Williams. While that’s a relatively low bar to clear considering that making the Round of 32 in last year’s NCAA Tournament was the best finish for Williams in College Station since arriving from Virginia Tech in 2019, it also shouldn’t diminish this team’s capabilities.

“I think he’s built a really, really good culture there, one where his kids play extremely hard every night,” Terry said of Williams and A&M on Thursday. “When a shot goes up, they’re going to be extremely physical, they’re going to try to beat you to 50/50 balls, they do a great job with their defense, and they attack on their terms.”

Unlike the extraordinarily weak non-conference schedule for Texas, A&M enters the rivalry game after facing eight opponents from power conferences, including posting a 3-0 record against ranked teams, including a 14-point win over Ohio State, which beat Texas in the season opener in Las Vegas. Williams’ team also beat No. 21 Creighton and No. 11 Purdue, as well as Texas Tech.

The team’s catalyst and emotional core is guard Wade Taylor — the Lancaster product leads Texas A&M in scoring (15.9 ppg), assists (5.0 apg), made threes (32), made free throws (41), and free-throw percentage (89.1 percent).

What ultimately defines the Aggies, though, is their physicality. The defense ranks No. 7 nationally in adjusted efficiency and has the No. 15 block rate in the country while the offense gets to the free-throw line with regularity and cleans up its own misses, leading the country with an offensive rebounding rate of 45.4 percent.

The bruises inside are Duke transfer forward Henry Coleman and Minnesota transfer forward Pharrell Payne, who both have higher offensive rebounding rates than defensive rebounding rates. Payne is particularly difficult to defend without fouling — the 6’9, 250-pounder plays just over 17 minutes a game, but has an insane free-throw rate. As a result, Payne leads A&M with 50 free-throw attempts.

So staying out of foul trouble will be a priority for Texas senior forwards Kadin Shedrick and Arthur Kaluma, both of whom give up significant mass to Coleman and Payne, because while Payne only shoots 50 percent from the line, the bigger concern is that foul trouble could limit playing time for the starting frontcourt of the Longhorns.

In losses to UCF and Oregon, Texas A&M shot poorly inside the arc and struggled to keep the Knights and the Ducks off their own free-throw lines, suggesting the potential path to winning for the Horns — defend the paint and attack downhill offensively.

For Texas, Terry said that his team spent non-conference play developing its identity, which the Longhorns want to revolve around playing well defensively and using stops to get out in transition to create easy baskets.

Developing that identity was complicated by the team’s health issues. The final non-conference game against Northwestern State saw that returns of star freshman guard Tre Johnson and senior forward Jayson Kent, making the first time that Texas was fully healthy since the first scrimmage against Grand Canyon back in October.

Having a healthy roster means the Horns can bring two experienced guards off the bench in junior Chendall Weaver and senior Julian Larry, as well as two experienced forwards in Kent and Ze’Rik Onyema, whose mass the Horns may need against the Aggies.

Texas will also have to deal with the electric environment at Reed Arena, which seats nearly 13,000 fans. When Terry played against the Aggies in College Station as an assistant under Rick Barnes, Texas A&M generally fielded weak teams, but that didn’t make winning there easy.

On Thursday, Terry recalled the 2005-06 Elite Eight team suffering one of its three conference losses to the Aggies in College Station when the Longhorns were unable to attempt a go-ahead shot late in the game, affording Texas A&M guard Acie Law a chance to take and make a knuckle-ball, game-winning three at the buzzer to win a 46-43 slugfest.

The rivalry atmosphere means that Texas will have to match the energy level of Texas A&M, a team strength, as Terry noted on Thursday.

“You have to have a physical mindset, you’ve gotta value, take care of the ball, you’ve got to try to win the game within the game, the 50-50 ball game — it really is the difference in in winning and losing,” Terry said.

Texas A&M is a 6.5-point favorite on FanDuel with a win probability of 73 percent and a projected score of 72-66, according to BartTorvik.com.
