Texas basketball says it’s ready for SEC debut, road game at Texas A&M

Texas basketball coach Rodney Terry knows the rivalry between UT and Texas A&M is scarcely a memory for his players, most of whom were in elementary school the last time the teams faced off as conference foes on the hardcourt.

But Terry, who grew up in Angleton, south of Houston, has done his best to serve up a few reminders to his team before SEC competition tips off for the Longhorns (11-2) with a trip to College Station on Saturday.

“I’m a Texas boy, so I know what it means to play this game,” Terry said. “You’re not going to find a better rivalry in all the college athletics. Having a chance to have Texas and Texas A&M play again, it’s great for the state of Texas.”

More:Texas basketball routs Northwestern State in final nonconference game. Up next? Rugged SEC

Texas forward Kadin Shedrick drives to the basket in the win over Northwestern State on Sunday at Moody Center. Shedrick and the Longhorns will open SEC action Saturday at Texas A&M, one of five ranked teams UT will face to start play in its new conference.

Basketball between rivals could be as physical as football

Most fans think of football when it comes to what’s now dubbed the Lone Star Showdown by both schools, who renewed their regular-season rivalry in every sport when Texas officially joined the Aggies in the SEC in July.

And why not? The ticket to see the Texas football team’s 17-7 win at Kyle Field in November was the most expensive in college football history, according to online marketplace TickPick. And 109,028 fans piled into Kyle Field in College Station to see the game that capped the regular season.

The Texas basketball team is gearing up for its SEC debut as they prepare to take on Texas A&M in a highly anticipated road game. With a strong start to the season and a talented roster, the Longhorns are confident and ready to make a statement in their new conference.

Coach Chris Beard has been leading the team with a focus on defense and toughness, and the players have bought into his system. Standout players like Marcus Carr, Timmy Allen, and Christian Bishop have been leading the charge on both ends of the court, and the team chemistry is evident as they work together to achieve their goals.

The Longhorns know that playing in the SEC will present new challenges, but they are embracing the opportunity to test themselves against some of the best teams in the country. They are ready to show that they belong in their new conference and are determined to make a strong first impression in their upcoming game against Texas A&M.

Fans can expect an intense and competitive matchup as Texas basketball makes its SEC debut. Stay tuned for what is sure to be an exciting game as the Longhorns look to make a statement on the road against their in-state rival. #HookEm

  • Arsenal can trust Ethan Nwaneri in Bukayo Saka’s absence – this is how he’s developed since debut

Arsenal can trust Ethan Nwaneri in Bukayo Saka’s absence – this is how he’s developed since debut

Ethan Nwaneri will look back fondly on his first two away trips to Brentford.

In September 2022, he became the Premier League’s youngest-ever player at 15 when he replaced Fabio Vieira in added time. Back at the Gtech Community Stadium two and a half years later, he became the third-youngest player ever to start a Premier League game for Arsenal at the age of 17 years and 286 days. Only Cesc Fabregas and Theo Walcott did it younger.

He took the injured Bukayo Saka’s place on the right wing as Mikel Arteta continued to experiment in the England international’s absence.

“In that position, it wasn’t because of the bug,” the Arsenal manager said in his post-match press conference, referencing the illness that had kept several out of the game. “It was a decision I made because I thought he was the best player to play in that position to start the game. And because there was a story there with his debut here. Making his Premier League debut, sometimes that feeling comes in and you feel it’s the right one and then who knows.”

Although he is a natural midfielder, Nwaneri’s development through Arsenal’s academy has helped his readiness to fill Saka’s shoes on the right. He recently admitted to the Arsenal website that he had been used in defensive midfield at points. The Athletic has also detailed his use not just as an attacking midfielder, but as a winger on both flanks and as a centre-forward for the under-18s and under-21s in the 2022-23 season.

Arteta recently spoke in a press conference about how that could see him develop into a striker in the future. For now, however, the work and talent of Nwaneri saw Arteta trust him to contribute off the right flank. Although most of his football for the first team has come in midfield, Arteta has drip-fed Nwaneri minutes on the right wing going back to last season.

When Arsenal were 6-0 up away to West Ham last February, Nwaneri was the one to replace Saka on the right. He played 13 minutes and constantly combined with Martin Odegaard, who has been a reference point for his growth in recent seasons. In an October interview, academy manager Per Mertesacker said: “In Ethan’s case you see where he will develop and actually transfer his game into those pocket areas, like Martin Odegaard.

“Ethan is an attacking midfielder who can play multiple positions but sometimes to develop his running in behind and defending as a winger (he may play elsewhere) and Mikel will use it to his strength.”

That has proven to be the case. Nwaneri shows different qualities out wide from the ‘pocket play’ when he plays in midfield. The teenager was confident enough to go on the outside of Keane Lewis-Potter to get crosses in off his weaker right foot early on against Brentford.

Nwaneri’s ball retention was then key after the game turned with Bryan Mbeumo’s opener. In a moment that could have contributed to the increasingly frantic nature of the first half, he received the ball with three players around him. A couple of feints later, he flicked the ball through to Jurrien Timber, who found Odegaard. The captain won a foul in midfield and a sense of calm was restored.

Nwaneri was found again in a similar position two minutes later and skipped by a challenge before passing forward to Gabriel Jesus, who equalised in the same possession. Those dribbles are already one of Nwaneri’s standout traits. His nutmeg and drive past Lewis-Potter in the second half may have raised eyebrows to those watching on TV, but moments like that have been part of his game since he was in the academy.

That ability saw him lead the game in progressive carries (five).

A similar run and shot breathed life into the Emirates at 2-2 against Leicester City in September. In these moments, Nwaneri appears to glide with the ball more than running with it.

“It was always there,” Des Ryan, formerly Arsenal’s head of sports medicine and athletic development and now director of sport at Ireland’s University of Galway, tells The Athletic.

“You could see it at the early age groups. It’s a dream for a strength and conditioner/sports scientist because you don’t have to teach a person how to run (with the ball). He had the movement skills. You could develop his strength, so he could exert more force through the ground and condition him, so he could do it repeatedly. They’re the easy ones like with Bukayo and Serge Gnabry too.”

Nwaneri had a part to play in Arsenal’s second and third goals (Richard Heathcote/Getty Images)

Importantly, like the academy graduate he was deputising, Nwaneri also played a key part in Arsenal’s second and third goals. His corner in the build-up to Mikel Merino’s goal was delivered perfectly to give Mark Flekken grief in the Brentford goal. This should not come as a surprise. Arsenal’s players and staff have trusted the youngster to take corners when he has been on in place of Saka against Bournemouth (when they were 2-0 down), Liverpool and Nottingham Forest this season.

His crossing from open play helped create Gabriel Martinelli’s goal too. This was not a coincidence. In the team’s pre-match warm-ups, rather than playing the usual intricate passes inside the box, Nwaneri was whipping crosses to Merino at the back post.

Considering all three goals Arsenal scored against Brentford last season were headers, that could have been a deliberate ploy. Neither Merino nor Martinelli’s goals were headers, but both players were beneficiaries of what can happen when crosses are used to ask questions of the opposition.

A lot has happened between Nwaneri’s last outing at the Gtech Community Stadium and this one. Arsenal have grown into serious title contenders, while Nwaneri has had to mature as a young man and professional footballer. Navigating the growth of the club and talented young individuals is not easy, but in Nwaneri’s case, Arteta has not rushed to reward him with his first Premier League start.

“Part of that development is patience,” the Arsenal manager added. “And managing frustration and expectations because you expect that everything is going to go so fast as the previous things did. That’s not the case. Now we’re building him. He’s already played a lot of minutes for us for the age he’s at and he fully deserves that.

Nwaneri had already made 16 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions this season, starting three games in the Carabao Cup. On the back of his first league start, he has now played 432 minutes of senior football in 2024-25. That has come after a telling 189 minutes across five matches in pre-season.

With a couple of Saka-less months coming on the right flank, Nwaneri has shown he is more than capable of being trusted by Arteta in various in-game contexts. A difference maker against the team with the joint-best home record in the league (Brentford and Liverpool have won 22 points at home this term), Nwaneri’s latest trip to west London was just as beneficial as his first, if not more so.

Arsenal can trust Ethan Nwaneri in Bukayo Saka’s absence – this is how he’s developed since debut

With Bukayo Saka sidelined due to injury, Arsenal fans may be concerned about who will step up to fill the void left by the talented young winger. However, one player who has shown immense growth and potential in recent months is Ethan Nwaneri.

Since making his debut for the Gunners, Nwaneri has impressed with his pace, skill, and work rate. The 18-year-old Nigerian winger has shown great versatility, being able to play on either flank and even in a more central attacking role.

Nwaneri’s development has been rapid, and he has become an integral part of Arsenal’s youth setup. His performances for the U23 team have been consistently impressive, with his ability to take on defenders and create chances for his teammates standing out.

In addition to his attacking prowess, Nwaneri has also shown a willingness to track back and help out defensively. His work rate and commitment to the team’s cause have not gone unnoticed by his coaches and teammates.

With Saka out of action, Nwaneri has a golden opportunity to prove himself at the senior level. His potential is undeniable, and if given the chance, he could be the player to step up and make a name for himself in the absence of the star winger.

Arsenal can trust Ethan Nwaneri to deliver when called upon, and his development since his debut is a testament to his dedication and talent. Gunners fans should keep an eye on this exciting young talent as he looks to make his mark in the first team.

  • Vanessa Williams’ mom dies at 85 on a trip to watch her daughter’s West End debut

Vanessa Williams’ mom dies at 85 on a trip to watch her daughter’s West End debut

Vanessa Williams‘ mom, Helen, has died at the age of 85.

She passed away on the morning of December 28th, after traveling to London, England to celebrate her birthday surrounded by her family and watch her daughter’s debut at the West End, where she plays Miranda Priestly in the stage production of “The Devil Wears Prada.”

Helen’s death was announced by her family, who shared a moving obituary. The message reads that the trip was organized “to celebrate her 85th birthday party surrounded by 150 of her family and friends.”

“During her visit she suffered a major decline in health which ended her life.” Her cause of death was listed as acute liver failure.

Helen was a teacher, working for over 40 years in the Ossining and Manhattanville School Districts. She retired in 1996.

Her obituary quoted one of her favorite teachings she imparted to her students: “Work the best you can and don’t let anyone tell you that you cannot do something — ever! Make up your mind, prepare yourself, study hard, and be very, very confident.”

Williams’ message following her mother’s passing

Vanessa Williams shared the news of her mother’s death on Instagram, sharing a photo of her mother and a sincere caption.

“On December 28th, the world lost a powerhouse, dynamo and force of nature packed into a 5ft frame, Our mom, Helen Williams, aka Gaga to many, took her final bow in London 20 days after celebrating her 85th birthday surrounded by family and friends. It’s impossible to describe all she meant to everyone because each person saw a different facet of her. Loyal friend to many, icy stares to a chosen few. We will miss it all.”

Williams’ friends wrote thoughtful messages in the comments section, sharing their experiences with Helen and their support for their friend.

“Vanessa, what a beautiful, BEAUTIFUL WOMAN,” wrote the actor Jerry O’Connell. “Always a RAY OF SUNSHINE. Our whole family is here for you and the family. Helen was such a beauty! We are so blessed to have known her. Love to everyone.”

I’m sad to report that Vanessa Williams’ mother, Helen Williams, has passed away at the age of 85 while on a trip to London to watch her daughter’s West End debut. Vanessa, a talented actress and singer known for her roles in Broadway shows and television series, was set to take the stage in a new production when tragedy struck.

Helen Williams was a devoted mother and supporter of Vanessa’s career, always cheering her on from the sidelines. It is truly heartbreaking that she won’t be able to see her daughter shine on stage one last time.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Vanessa and her family during this difficult time. May Helen rest in peace knowing that she raised a daughter who has touched the hearts of so many with her incredible talent and grace.

  • Inside the debut of ‘They Call it Late Night with Jason Kelce’

Inside the debut of ‘They Call it Late Night with Jason Kelce’

The show’s title was even used as an ode to the first episode from NFL Films to ever air.

Development of the late-night show began back in February as Kelce worked with Wooderboy Productions, Skydance Sports, ESPN, and NFL Films to get everything off the ground.

“Before you know it, you’re building a team with NFL Films. You’re going to ESPN for back-and-forth there and communication. You’re building set design, you’re building writers, you’re building, you know, who we can have on the show, which, admittedly, probably comes back together at the last part, right? But there’s so much. What are we going to do? What’s the show going to be? What’s the format? How much is going to be the panel dialog? I really felt it would be nice to do these entertaining bits with comedy. I mean, we all did,” Kelce said.

Kelce opened the show walking in from behind the crowd and up onto the stage where he spoke with the fans and thanked them for being a part of the debut.

From there, he kicked off the premiere in the only way Jason Kelce could do so – chugging a beer.

However, this was not any normal chug, as he was served by Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Eagles wide receiver Harold Carmichael, who gave him a boost of confidence about doing the show.

And of course, Jason’s wife, Kylie, had to make a viewer discretion statement to the crowd about all of the language being used in the show, joking that the Kelce’s children may be used to it, but others watching at home should be advised.

And much like many talk shows, there was a live band inside the venue, performing during breaks and at different times throughout the show. Snacktime had the honor of playing upstairs on the balcony of Union Transfer.

“I really wanted brass, but when I think of NFL music and Snacktime had performed my first charity benefit concert for my own charity years ago. So, I was familiar with them. They can do everything. I mean, they have that kind of talent to do a bunch of things. They’re excellent musicians,” Kelce said.

“It was important to me, whoever was doing this, to be in Philadelphia, a piece of the Philadelphia scene. And we tried to do that throughout, we really did. The show is obviously filmed here. The venue’s here. I felt it was important to pay respect to the city that gave me my career, to try and make this as Philly as possible, and not outwardly being as Philly as possible.

“This first show is certainly going to be pretty Philly, but it will eventually evolve into a show that feels more national, but I always want the Philly roots be felt and heard. So that was an important thing for us.”

The Ohio native also paid an ode to fellow late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, going through a portal to appear in front of the comedian to ask for advice on his first show.

Inside the debut of ‘They Call it Late Night with Jason Kelce’

Last night marked the highly anticipated debut of ‘They Call it Late Night with Jason Kelce’, a new late-night talk show hosted by Philadelphia Eagles’ star center, Jason Kelce. The show promises to bring a unique blend of humor, sports, and celebrity interviews to late-night television.

Kelce kicked off the show with a monologue that had the audience in stitches, poking fun at his own antics on and off the field. He then brought out his first guest, fellow Eagle, and long-time friend, Lane Johnson. The two shared hilarious stories from their time on the team, giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at the life of an NFL player.

The show also featured a musical performance by a local Philadelphia band, as well as a segment where Kelce tried his hand at various odd jobs, much to the amusement of the audience.

Overall, the debut of ‘They Call it Late Night with Jason Kelce’ was a hit, with fans praising Kelce’s charismatic hosting abilities and the show’s fresh take on the late-night talk show format. With promises of more celebrity guests and outrageous stunts in future episodes, it looks like ‘They Call it Late Night with Jason Kelce’ is here to stay.

Kawhi Leonard injury update: Clippers star expected to make season debut Saturday vs. Hawks, per report

Kawhi Leonard is expected to make his season debut for the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday when they host the Atlanta Hawks, according to NBA Insider Chris Haynes. The team upgraded him to questionable on Friday night.

Leonard, who has been suffering from inflammation in his right knee, has been playing full-contact 5-on-5 in practice since Dec. 18, but the Clippers wanted to see him get more scrimmages in before bringing him back, coach Tyronn Lue told reporters.

Three months ago, team president Lawrence Frank said that, while the swelling in Leonard’s knee was almost gone, they wanted to be cautious. Last season, Leonard played in 68 of the Clippes’ first 74 games, then missed their last eight because of inflammation in his knee. He tried to come back during their first-round series against the Dallas Mavericks, but his knee didn’t respond as well as they’d hoped it would. This time, they wanted to make sure that he doesn’t wind up in a similar situation.

“I know he doesn’t like to play 5-on-5 a lot outside of the games, but this is very important to the medical staff, to Lawrence, to our group as well,” Lue said. “Just making sure he’s getting the right amount of reps, making sure he’s doing everything so this doesn’t occur again. so we can kind of monitor the fluid and see how it’s working. So far, it’s been really good, and we just want to continue to keep progressing.”

If Leonard indeed comes back on Saturday, he will have missed the Clippers’ first 34 games of the season. The Clippers have gone 19-15 (tied in the loss column with the No. 6 Mavericks) without Leonard thanks in large part to their top-five defense.

Their offense, however, ranks in the bottom 10. James Harden’s usage rate is the highest it has been since 2019-20, but he has told reporters that he’s not worried about his role changing when Leonard comes back.

“It’s funny, me and Kawhi talked about that a little bit on the bench today,” Harden said after the Clippers’ 102-92 win against the Golden State Warriors, via ClutchPoints’ Tomer Azarly, on Dec. 27. “Whenever his return is, we just talked about [it], and I just said, ‘Just work your way in,’ you know what I mean? ‘Cause he feels like he doesn’t want to just come over and just mess up the flow and the chemistry that we have been building up, but I don’t think it’s going to be a problem. Like, I’ve been in every situation in a sense of like being the main guy, having to take [a step back]. So I think, for our aggressiveness and our team, we’re going to still play the same way. It’s just we got another unique weapon on both ends of the floor, so it’s definitely a bonus for us.”

In 2023-24, Leonard made the All-NBA Second Team and averaged 23.7 points on 62.6% true shooting, plus 6.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.6 steals and 0.9 blocks in 34.3 minutes.

Kawhi Leonard injury update: Clippers star expected to make season debut Saturday vs. Hawks, per report

According to a recent report, Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard is expected to make his season debut on Saturday against the Atlanta Hawks. Leonard has been sidelined with a foot injury since the start of the season, but it appears he is finally ready to return to the court.

Fans and teammates alike have been eagerly awaiting Leonard’s return, as he is considered one of the best players in the NBA. His presence on the court is sure to provide a significant boost to the Clippers, who have been struggling to find consistency in his absence.

It will be interesting to see how Leonard performs in his first game back, as he will likely be looking to make a statement and remind everyone why he is considered one of the top players in the league. Stay tuned for more updates on Leonard’s return and how it impacts the Clippers’ season moving forward.

  • Kings rookie Devin Carter to make NBA debut Friday vs. Grizzlies, who employ his father as an assistant coach

Kings rookie Devin Carter to make NBA debut Friday vs. Grizzlies, who employ his father as an assistant coach

The Sacramento Kings‘ Devin Carter, the No. 13 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, will make his NBA debut on Friday, and his father, Memphis Grizzlies assistant coach Anthony Carter, will be on the opposite side.

“It’s definitely a special moment,” Carter told reporters Friday, via FOX40’s Sean Cunningham.

Carter had surgery in July to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. He has missed Sacramento’s first 34 games, but this will not technically be his first time playing professionally. On Dec. 28, Carter scored 29 points on 8-for-11 shooting for the G League’s Stockton Kings in a win over the Austin Spurs. On Thursday, with his father in attendance, he put up 17 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists in a win over the Memphis Hustle.

“Just thankful for the opportunity, really,” Carter said. “They told me last night that I was going to be able to play now after playing two games with the G, so I think it was a good experience. [I’m] ready to get going.”

Last year at Providence, Carter, a 6-foot-2 guard, established himself as one of the best defenders in college basketball and a drastically improved shooter. He will immediately make the Kings more athletic and, if paired with Keon Ellis, could give interim coach Doug Christie some more defense-oriented lineups.

Carter told reporters he wants to “bring some energy off the bench,” knock down open shots and pressure the opponent’s best player full-court. He wants to take pressure off of De’Aaron Fox and Malik Monk defensively, he said.

Sacramento fired coach Mike Brown last week, and it has gone 1-2 in the Christie era: a 133-122 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, a 110-100 win against the Dallas Mavericks (who were without Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving) and a 113-107 come-from-behind win against the Philadelphia 76ers (who were without Joel Embiid).

On the season, the Kings are 15-19 and 12th in the West, with an offense that ranks eighth in the league and a defense that ranks 15th.

Grizzlies’ Anthony Carter on opposite side of son Devin’s NBA debut

The NBA world was abuzz as Memphis Grizzlies assistant coach Anthony Carter found himself on the opposite side of the court from his son Devin Carter’s NBA debut. It was a bittersweet moment for the father-son duo, who have shared a love for basketball since Devin was a young boy.

Anthony Carter, a former NBA player himself, has been coaching in the league for several years now. Seeing his son follow in his footsteps and make it to the highest level of basketball was a proud moment for him, even if it meant they were on opposing teams for the night.

Devin Carter, a highly touted rookie, showed flashes of his potential in his debut game against the Grizzlies. Despite the competitive nature of the game, there was no denying the special bond between father and son as they shared a brief embrace after the final buzzer.

For Anthony Carter, it was a surreal experience to see his son living out his dream on the same court where he once played. And for Devin, it was a moment he will never forget, knowing that his father’s guidance and support helped him reach this milestone in his career.

As they walked off the court together, the Carter duo knew that this was just the beginning of a new chapter in their basketball journey. And no matter which team they find themselves on in the future, their bond as father and son will always remain unbreakable.

Snug Tavern toasts Webster’s Test debut

“The first catch, we erupted in here,” Calvin Aean, curator of the nearby Kingston Twin Ovals, where Webster played his junior cricket, reported from the Snug Tavern bar.

“But the second one getting rid of Virat [Kohli], that had a great reaction given no one seems to like him over the past few weeks. So that was pretty special.

“There’s a lot of the old boys in here, his old teammates and mates of his old man, and we’ve been keeping the bar busy from the first ball. It’s a pretty special time.”

Webster was feeling the love from home and abroad. His phone has been blowing up in the 24 hours preceding his baggy green presentation from Mark Waugh.

“To come from a small place in Tasmania and represent the country, there hasn’t been too many [Tasmanians] over the journey,” Webster said.

“So to be one of to be one of those few, I’m really proud. I’m Tasmanian through and through, [so] to be able to put on a show for them, put them on the map and do what I can for the state, makes me really proud.”

While the people of Snug keep the home fires burning, Rod and Tina Webster take a breath after a mad 24-hour scramble to take in their youngest’s Test debut. Not for nothing, it was Mitch Marsh who told Webster he would be replacing the Western Australian, delivering the news of his own downfall with “a big nod, big grin and ‘you’re in’.”

After a Facebook call-out for a dog sitter went viral, hounds Eddie and Frank were left in the care of relatives. Flights from Hobart to Sydney were found; accommodation too.

Older brother Jordan, currently based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, tried to make his own haphazard dash across the Pacific once news of his sibling’s debut arrived at 10am AEDT on Thursday.

But at last check, Jordan was settling for a dodgy online stream in the cosmopolitan South American centre. In one ear, surely, was one half of Australian cricket’s new favourite set of earrings.

The other is shining brightly in the SCG centre. Conjuring memories of Shane Warne, Colin ‘Funky’ Miller and a youthful Michael Clarke, a heady slew of loud, occasionally lewd, local favourites to sport earrings in the gentleman’s game.

Webster strikes as anything but. Even if the theory at the Snug Tavern, according to Aean, is that “the earring might have come in after his last few overseas T20 contracts.

“The bigger the contract, the bigger the diamond maybe?”

The truth is far more wholesome, and better for it.

An unassuming journeyman of Australian cricket, Webster has plied his trade for more than a decade in the state arena. Now 31, he’s found consistency with his batting and added seamers to his off-spin in a reversal of Miller’s own late-blooming Test career.

A berth on the next subcontinent tour to Sri Lanka at the end of the month looms given the added strings Beau now offers. Especially after an eye-catching first day as an Australian Test cricketer, bling and all.

“His mother bought a set of earrings probably about a year ago,” Rod Webster explains. “And she gave one to Beau and one to his older brother. They both wear them, I think just out of respect for their mother. I wouldn’t say Beau’s all that out there, that might be his one thing.”

We at Snug Tavern are raising our glasses to toast the incredible achievement of young cricketer, Webster, on his Test debut!

With hard work, dedication, and sheer talent, Webster has earned his spot on the field and we couldn’t be more proud to see him representing our nation on the international stage.

Here’s to a successful Test debut, Webster! May your career be filled with many more milestones and victories. Cheers! #WebsterTestDebut #Cricket #SnugTavernCelebrates
