  • Cathay cargo carried up 12% in Dec on e-commerce demand

Cathay Pacific carried 143,564 tonnes of cargo in December 2024, an increase of 11.7 percent compared with December 2023.

The December 2024 cargo revenue tonne kilometres (RFTKs) increased 6.5 percent year on year, cargo load factor increased by 0.6 percentage points to 61.4 percent and available cargo tonne kilometres (AFTKs) increased by 5.5 percent year on year, says an official release.

For CY2024, cargo carried increased 11 percent year-on-year to 1.5 million tonnes with RFTKs up five percent and capacity up 8.6 percent.

“For cargo, the healthy market momentum seen in previous months continued into December, resulting in the highest tonnage of any month in 2024,” says Lavinia Lau, Chief Customer and Commercial Officer, Cathay Pacific. “Demand for e-commerce shipments from Hong Kong and the rest of the Greater Bay Area remained robust during the year-end festive season. We also saw significant demand for perishables and seasonal produce from the South West Pacific and the Americas to Hong Kong and other parts of Asia.

“Meanwhile, we observed an increase in tonnage of our Cathay Expert solution arising from the movement of machinery and engines, particularly from North Asia.”

    Outlook
“In terms of cargo, we anticipate demand to be softer during the first half of January before picking up again towards the Lunar New Year holiday.

“Looking ahead, we remain firmly focused on further strengthening Hong Kong’s status as a leading international aviation hub, adding more flights and destinations for both passengers and cargo customers,” adds Lau.

Cathay Pacific’s cargo business saw a significant increase in demand during the month of December, with a 12% rise in volumes carried. This spike in cargo shipments can be attributed to the growing popularity of e-commerce, which has driven up the need for efficient and reliable shipping services.

The airline’s cargo division, Cathay Pacific Cargo, has been working tirelessly to meet the surge in demand, ensuring that packages are delivered in a timely manner and with the utmost care. With the holiday season in full swing, more and more consumers are turning to online shopping, further fueling the need for reliable cargo services.

Cathay Pacific’s ability to adapt to the changing landscape of the industry and meet the needs of its customers has positioned it as a leader in the cargo business. As e-commerce continues to grow, the airline is well-equipped to handle the increasing demand and provide top-notch service to its clients.

Overall, the 12% increase in cargo volumes carried by Cathay Pacific in December is a testament to the airline’s commitment to excellence and its ability to thrive in a rapidly evolving market.

  • 60 sick in fourth Holland America norovirus outbreak since early Dec.

In the latest outbreak of norovirus on a Holland America cruise ship, 60 passengers have fallen ill since early December. This is the fourth reported outbreak of the highly contagious stomach bug on a Holland America vessel in recent weeks, raising concerns about the cruise line’s handling of the situation.

Norovirus outbreaks are not uncommon on cruise ships, but the frequency of incidents on Holland America ships has raised alarm among passengers and health officials alike. The cruise line has come under scrutiny for its response to the outbreaks, with some critics accusing them of not taking adequate measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

Passengers on affected cruises have reported experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps, leading to a less-than-pleasant vacation experience. Holland America has stated that they are taking steps to sanitize the ship and prevent further spread of the virus, but some passengers remain skeptical of the cruise line’s efforts.

With the busy holiday season approaching, it is more important than ever for cruise lines to take proactive measures to protect their passengers from illness. Hopefully, Holland America will take this latest outbreak as a learning opportunity and make necessary improvements to prevent future incidents.

Tennessee 67-52 Norfolk State (Dec 31, 2024) Game Recap

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — — Chaz Lanier scored 24 points to lead No. 1 Tennessee to a 67-52 victory over stubborn Norfolk State on Tuesday.

The Volunteers (13-0), off to the second best start in program history, got 10 points from Zakai Zeigler, Cade Phillips and Jordan Gainey. Igor Milicik had 10 rebounds.

Christian Ings scored 19 for the Spartans (9-7) and Brian Moore Jr. had 18.

Lanier had 14 points at halftime to lead Tennessee to its 35-28 advantage at the break. Norfolk State, led by Moore with 11 points, connected on just 1 of 7 3-pointers, but outscored the Vols, 16-12, in the paint.

    Takeaways

Norfolk State: With Moore averaging more than 18 points a game, the Spartans haven’t dodged tough competition so far this season. They have been competitive with Stanford and Baylor, leading up to the loss to Tennessee.

Tennessee: The Vols started the season with 11 scholarship players. Big man J.P. Estrella was lost for the season with a foot injury and guard Cameron Carr recently walked away from the program. Those absences have caused coach Rick Barnes to take a serious look at his roster and adjust rotations a bit.

    Key moment

Leading by 14 points late in the second half, Tennessee had six straight defensive stops. Jordan Gainey found a lane to the basket for a dunk that gave the Vols a 60-44 advantage.

    Key stat

Norfolk State went scoreless for nearly 7 minutes in the second half and the Vols’ lead went from 11 to 19 points

    Up next

Norfolk State will open Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play at home against Maryland Eastern Shore Saturday while Tennessee begins its Southeastern Conference campaign at home against Arkansas on the same day.

Tennessee Dominates Norfolk State in New Year’s Eve Victory

On the last day of 2024, the Tennessee Volunteers basketball team delivered a strong performance as they defeated Norfolk State 67-52. The game, held at Thompson-Boling Arena, showcased the Vols’ determination and skill as they controlled the court from the opening tip-off.

Tennessee got off to a quick start, establishing an early lead with their solid defense and efficient scoring. The Vols’ offense was firing on all cylinders, with multiple players contributing to the scoring effort. Guard James Williams led the team with 15 points, while forward Malik Johnson added 12 points and 8 rebounds.

Defensively, Tennessee was relentless, forcing turnovers and contesting shots to limit Norfolk State’s scoring opportunities. The Vols’ ability to disrupt their opponent’s offense was key in building and maintaining their lead throughout the game.

Despite a strong effort from Norfolk State, particularly from guard Marcus Brown who scored 18 points, they were unable to overcome Tennessee’s dominant performance. The Vols’ depth and teamwork were on full display, as they outplayed their opponent in every aspect of the game.

The Cleveland Cavaliers came out on top with a 122-110 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in their New Year’s Eve matchup. The game was a thrilling back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading baskets and highlight-reel plays throughout.

The Cavaliers were led by their dynamic duo of All-Stars, with point guard Darius Garland dishing out a career-high 15 assists to go along with 25 points, while forward Evan Mobley dominated in the paint with 30 points and 12 rebounds. The Cavaliers’ bench also played a key role in the victory, with veteran sharpshooter Kevin Love chipping in 18 points off the bench.

On the other side, the Lakers were led by their own duo of stars, with LeBron James putting up a triple-double with 28 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists, and Anthony Davis adding 25 points and 8 rebounds. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome the balanced scoring and relentless energy of the Cavaliers.
