    DENVER — — Donovan Mitchell scored 33 points, Evan Mobley had 26 points and the streaking Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Denver Nuggets 149-135 on Friday night for their sixth straight win.

    Cleveland set a season high in points and improved to 10-1 since dropping two in a row to Atlanta last month.

    Nikola Jokic had 27 points, 14 rebounds and 13 assists for his league-leading 12th triple-double of the season, and Jamal Murray also had 27 with 10 assists for Denver, which has dropped two in a row.

    Michael Porter Jr. scored 13 of the Nuggets’ first 25 points to help keep pace with the Cavaliers but only scored five the rest of the way.

    Cleveland led by as many as 19 to improve its NBA-best record to 27-4.

    MANHATTAN, Kan. — — Coleman Hawkins had 20 points and 10 rebounds, Dug McDaniel added 17 points and Kansas State led No. 16 Cincinnati nearly wire-to-wire in a 70-67 victory Monday night to open the 20-game Big 12 conference grind.

    David N’Guessan also had 13 points, and C.J. Jones made four free throws in the final 20 seconds, helping the Wildcats (7-5, 1-0) snap a three-game losing streak that had concluded their bitterly disappointing nonconference slate.

    Kansas State led the Bearcats (10-2, 0-1) for all but 24 seconds, but was left clinging to a 65-63 lead after Aziz Bandaogo‘s dunk with 27 seconds to go. Hawkins was fouled and made the first of two free throws with 23 seconds remaining, but Max Jones was there to tap the miss to C.J. Jones, who was fouled and made two free throws to extend the lead.

    Bandaogo scored again with 8.9 seconds left, but C.J. Jones made the last of his two foul shots to put the game away.

    Dan Skillings Jr. led Cincinnati with 18 points. Dillon Mitchell had 15 points and 11 rebounds.

    In 1853, the United States bought 45,000 square miles of land along the Gila River from Mexico for $10 million. The area is now southern Arizona and New Mexico.

    In 1903, flames swept the Iroquois Theater in Chicago, killing 602 people. The fire led to safety regulations for theaters around the world.

    In 1916, Grigori Rasputin, a self-fashioned Russian holy man, was killed by Russian nobles eager to end his influence over the royal family.

    In 1922, at the first Soviet Congress, Russia, Ukraine and two other Soviet republics signed a treaty creating the Soviet Union.

    Every year after the final Sunday of the NFL regular season, a day known as ‘Black Monday’ arrives where head coaches across the league are handed their pink slips. On Dec. 30, four NFL coaches faced the unfortunate fate of being fired on this infamous day.

    In 2019, the Miami Dolphins parted ways with head coach Brian Flores after three seasons at the helm. Despite showing signs of improvement in his final season, the Dolphins’ front office decided to make a change in leadership.

    The New York Giants also made a coaching change on this day in 2019, firing Pat Shurmur after just two seasons with the team. The Giants struggled under Shurmur’s tenure, leading to the decision to move in a different direction.

    The Washington Football Team joined the ranks of teams making coaching changes on ‘Black Monday’ in 2019 by dismissing Jay Gruden. Gruden had been with the team since 2014 but failed to lead them to consistent success during his time as head coach.

    Lastly, the Cleveland Browns decided to part ways with Freddie Kitchens after just one season as head coach. Kitchens’ tenure with the Browns was marred by inconsistency and underperformance, ultimately leading to his dismissal.

    ‘Black Monday’ is always a tough day in the NFL as coaches who have dedicated countless hours to their teams are suddenly out of a job. It serves as a harsh reminder of the high-stakes nature of professional football and the pressure to deliver results in a results-driven league.

    After an eight-day break between games, Auburn (12-1) struggled early and trailed Monmouth (2-11) for nearly seven minutes in the first half. Chaney Johnson then scored eight of his 12 points in quick succession to help the Tigers take control.

    By halftime, the Tigers led 46-28, and the rout was on.

    Chad Baker-Mazara added 13 points for Auburn.

    Abdi Bashir Jr. led Monmouth with 15 points, and Jaret Valencia added 13 for the Hawks.

    Monmouth: While the Hawks have only won twice this season, they’ve beaten Seton Hall on the road and have had good stretches of play against the likes of Wichita State, Rutgers and now Auburn.

    PISCATAWAY, N.J. — — Ace Bailey scored 24 points, fellow freshman Dylan Harper recorded the first triple-double for Rutgers since 1983 and the Scarlet Knights beat Columbia 91-64 on Monday night.

    Harper grabbed his 10th rebound with 5:05 remaining in the second half and he found Bailey for a layup at the other end for his 10th assist to secure the program’s first triple-double since star center Roy Hinson had 24 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks against Rhode Island on March 2, 1983.

    Harper finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists for Rutgers (8-5), which was coming off an 83-82 loss to Princeton. Harper also made 4 of 7 3-pointers. Jamichael Davis and Lathan Sommerville each scored 11.

    Bailey scored 13 points in the opening 12 minutes to help Rutgers build a 27-18 lead. The Scarlet Knights led 44-35 at the break and later took their largest lead of the game in the closing seconds when freshman Peter Noble made a long 3-pointer on his first shot attempt of the season.

    Columbia’s first offensive rebound of the game led to a 3-pointer by Kenny Noland to get within 54-46 with 14:07 remaining. But Harper scored the next four points to begin a 10-2 run that he capped with a 3-pointer to make it 64-48. Rutgers led by double digits the rest of the way.

    Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa scored 17 points for Columbia (11-2). Noland had 16 points and four 3-pointers

    Rutgers, which concluded the nonconference portion of its schedule, returns to Big Ten play against Indiana on Thursday. Columbia hosts Cornell on Jan. 11 in an Ivy League opener for both teams.

    Hawkeyes Coach Fran McCaffery said Friday that his team is healthy. Which has been a rarity this season. Only five players have played in every game.

    It means backup sophomore forward Seydou Traore, who missed the last two games with an ankle issue and has played in six games overall, is back.

    “Seydou looked really good” at the team’s Thursday practice, McCaffery said.

    New Hampshire, of the America East Conference, is winless against Division I opposition. Included among its conquerors are Fairfield, Sacred Heart, Marist and Stonehill.

    Entering the weekend, the Wildcats were 355th out of the 364 teams in the NCAA’s NET rankings. Iowa was 49th. Iowa is sixth in the nation in assists-to-turnovers ratio. UNH is 324th.

    The Wildcats’ average home attendance this season is 409.

    Owen Freeman leads Iowa in scoring with 17.1 points per game, with Payton Sandfort right behind at 16.7. Entering the weekend, Brock Harding was third in the league in assists (6.0 per game) and tied for first in steals (2.3).

    The Hawkeyes began the weekend eighth in the nation in scoring with 87.8 points per game.

    The Spartans (11-2) have won six in a row and nine of 10.

    The Broncos (3-9) were competitive in stretches of the game before falling behind by double digits midway through the second half.

    Michigan State’s Carson Cooper scored a career-high 13 points.

    Western Michigan’s Chansey Willis scored 12 points and Max Burton had 10.

    The game marked the return of Dwayne Stephens, who was hired off Tom Izzo’s staff in 2022. Stephens was an assistant for the Hall of Fame coach for 19 seasons and played for the Spartans under the late Jud Heathcote.
