Raw preview (Dec. 30, 2024): It’s the end of an era in WWE

Raw airs tonight (Dec. 30) with a live show from Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. This is the fifth episode of Raw during the nine week build towards Royal Rumble 2025, which takes place on February 1.

It’s the end of an era in WWE

Tonight is the final episode of WWE Raw on the USA Network before the show moves off cable and over to Netflix for 2025 and beyond.

Raw plans to go out with a bang, with tonight’s big segment advertised as CM Punk and Seth Rollins being “under one roof” to close out 2024. This is the final angle ahead of their (main event?) match on next week’s Netflix debut, so something explosive is all but guaranteed to happen.

Two Men, One Roof doesn’t exactly sound like the kind of PG content I expect from WWE, but I guess all the rules can be thrown out the window as Raw says farewell to the USA Network tonight.

Can General Manager Adam Pearce keep things under control when CM and Seth are under one roof at the same time? Tune into the final episode of Raw on USA to find out.

    The rest of the card

Both matches in the semifinal round of the women’s Intercontinental championship tournament are scheduled to take place tonight: Dakota Kai vs. Zoey Stark and IYO SKY vs. Lyra Valkyria. We could be headed to an all Damage CTRL final match next week if Dakota and IYO advance. Stark is really the only heel left, so perhaps her teammates in Pure Fusion Collective will do whatever they can to help her move on. Lyra Valkyria hasn’t competed in a one-on-one match on Raw since the end of September, so we’re still trying to get a sense for how hard WWE will be pushing her (or not) going forward.

Chad Gable vs. Otis is also booked on the card. Gable wants to kill off his old Alpha Academy group for good. He beat Akira Tozawa last week, but will probably need some help from The Creeds to take out his former number one student.

Life has been a BUTCH this month for Pete Dunne. R-Truth keeps calling him by the wrong name and even beat him in a match on Raw earlier this month. Dunne is looking for payback and to break Truth’s jaw in the rematch tonight.

Damian Priest & World Tag Team Champions Erik & Ivar are in six-man tag team competition tonight against Carlito, JD McDonagh, and Finn Balor of The Judgment Day. Carlito and JD should listen to Finn if they want to win, because it will be difficult to beat the babyfaces without taking some shortcuts along the way.

Other stuff to keep an eye on

    – Rhea Ripley and Women’s World Champion Liv Morgan will fight over the belt next week on Raw’s Netflix debut. Will Rhea send a final message to the champ by injuring that little shithead Dominik Mysterio tonight?

    – Sami Uso couldn’t get the job done against Drew McIntyre last week. Is it Jey Uso’s turn to try his luck tonight? Will Solo Sikoa’s Bloodline show up on Raw again to continue targeting the OG Bloodline before next week’s Tribal Combat between Sikoa and Roman Reigns?

    – John Cena is returning to Raw next week for the Netflix debut. Will WWE tease the potential return of Becky Lynch as well?

    – Is it time for the New Day to respond with violence to Rey Mysterio for rejecting them from the WWE locker room?

    – The feud between The Final Testament and Wyatt Sicks is far from over. Will their next big match be announced sometime during tonight’s broadcast? What kind of gimmick or stipulation will it have?

WWE Intercontinental Champion Bron Breakker and World Heavyweight Champion GUNTHER need some new challengers heading into the new year. What about fighting each other?

    – Which SmackDown and/or NXT stars will transfer window their asses over to Raw in time for next week’s Netflix debut?

    – When are folks going to start declaring for (or wrestling for spots in) the Royal Rumble match?

    – Where the f*** is Omos? Last I saw he was busy shopping at the Nintendo store in Tokyo ahead of his tag team championship match there this week. Perhaps he’s spent the last six months sinking hundreds of hours into catching up on The Legend of Zelda series.

What will you be looking for on Raw?

As we head into the final Raw of 2024, it’s the end of an era in WWE. With the year coming to a close, superstars are looking to make a statement and end the year on a high note.

One of the biggest storylines heading into tonight’s Raw is the impending retirement of a WWE legend. Fans have been speculating for weeks about who it could be, and tonight, all will be revealed.

In addition to the retirement announcement, there are bound to be some epic matches and moments that will keep fans on the edge of their seats. With rivalries heating up and championships on the line, tonight’s Raw is sure to be one for the history books.

Tune in to Raw tonight to witness the end of an era in WWE, and see what surprises are in store as we say goodbye to 2024.

  • RSA 301 & 150/8 vs PAK 211 & 237 (Marco Jansen 16(24) Kagiso Rabada 31(26)) | South Africa vs Pakistan, 1st Test, Thu, Dec 26, Pakistan tour of South Africa, 2024 -25

Aiden Markram | Player of the Match – Pretty relieved, that was really tense, to get on the right side is a big thing for us, to get past the winning mark and make it to the WTC final is a big relief for us. Today was the most important knock (compared to the first innings). I would’ve loved to be there at the end, but it didn’t work that way. The wicket changes (at Centurion), the options and the game plans need to be changed (as a batter). You need to be clinical ( as a team on victories), but you take these wins and go ahead at times. I’m not the one for milestones to be honest, I’m not going to make or break any records, but it’s about making an impact and contributing to wins for South Africa. It was challenging (on the pitch), I’m fortunate to have played cricket here while growing up, you’re never in on this wicket, it’s up and down and it’s challenging, batting can be very tricky at times, happy that it came off well this time

    South Africa vs Pakistan, 1st Test: RSA 301 & 150/8 vs PAK 211 & 237 (Marco Jansen 16(24) Kagiso Rabada 31(26))

In a thrilling first Test match between South Africa and Pakistan, the hosts managed to take a commanding lead after the first innings. South Africa posted a total of 301 in their first innings, with notable contributions from several batsmen including Kagiso Rabada who scored 31 runs off 26 balls. Pakistan, in response, could only manage 211 runs in their first innings, with the South African bowlers putting on a stellar performance.

In the second innings, Pakistan fought back strongly, posting a total of 237 runs. However, it was not enough to overcome the lead that South Africa had built in the first innings. Marco Jansen played a crucial role in South Africa’s second innings, scoring 16 runs off 24 balls and helping his team extend their lead.

As the match heads into the final day, South Africa find themselves in a strong position with a lead of 177 runs and two wickets remaining. Can Pakistan stage a comeback and pull off a miraculous victory? Stay tuned to find out in what promises to be an exciting conclusion to this gripping Test match.

TCU Dominates Brown in 79-47 Victory

The TCU Horned Frogs put on a clinic on both ends of the court as they cruised to a commanding 79-47 victory over the Brown Bears on December 29, 2024.

From the opening tip, TCU asserted their dominance, jumping out to an early lead and never looking back. The Horned Frogs’ suffocating defense held Brown to just 47 points, forcing turnovers and contesting shots at every opportunity.

Offensively, TCU was firing on all cylinders, with multiple players contributing to the scoring effort. Guard Marcus Johnson led the way with 18 points, while forward David Smith added 15 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double performance.

The Horned Frogs’ depth was on full display, as the bench players made significant contributions to the team’s success. TCU’s ball movement and unselfish play led to easy buckets and open looks from beyond the arc, helping them build a substantial lead that proved insurmountable for Brown.

Overall, it was a dominant performance by TCU, showcasing their talent and potential as a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming games. With this win, the Horned Frogs improve to a 10-2 record on the season, setting themselves up for success as they continue their journey towards postseason play.

  • What’s new to streaming this week? (Dec. 27, 2024)

What’s new to streaming this week? (Dec. 27, 2024)

Looking for something great to watch at home? Streaming subscribers are spoiled for choice between Hulu, Netflix, Max, Disney+, Apple TV+, Prime Video, Shudder, Paramount+, Peacock, and more. And that’s before you even look at the vast libraries of movies and television within each one!

Don’t be overwhelmed or waste an hour scrolling through your services trying to determine what to watch! We’ve got your back whatever your mood. Mashable offers watch guides for all of the above, broken down by genre: comedy, thriller, horror, documentary, animation, and more.

But if you’re seeking something brand spanking new (or new to streaming), we’ve got you covered there, too.

Mashable’s entertainment team has scoured the streaming services to highlight the most buzzed-about releases of this week and ranked them from worst to best — or least worth your time to most watchable. Whether you’re looking for some dystopian sci-fi, sports drama, or the new Doctor Who Christmas special, we’ve got you covered.

Here’s what’s new on streaming, from worst to best.

    5. Squid Game, Season 2

After a three-year wait, the sequel to Hwang Dong-hyuk’s massively popular dystopian thriller is finally hitting Netflix. Following on from the events of the first Squid Game, the second season sees Player 456 (Lee Jung-jae) returning to the titular games in an attempt to right the wrongs of the first season.

Details are still fairly secretive — though if you want the full scoop on S2, we’ve got a spoiler-filled review — but we do know that there will be some nightmarish new games to look forward to, including this humongous carousel from the trailer. Oh, and that giant murderous doll will be back. — Sam Haysom, Deputy UK Editor

Starring: Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-joon, Gong Yoo

How to watch: Squid Game Season 2 is now streaming on Netflix.

    4. ChiefsAholic: A Wolf in Chiefs Clothing

The worlds of sport and true crime collides in ChiefsAholic: A Wolf in Chiefs Clothing, Dylan Sires’ documentary about Kansas City Chiefs super-fan Xaviar Babudar, who was recently imprisoned for a string of armed bank robberies.

    Mashable Top Stories

Babudar became a famous face at Kansas City Chiefs’ games, appearing in a signature full-body wolf costume, before his arrest in 2022 — and subsequent escape. — S.H.

How to watch: ChiefsAholic: A Wolf in Chiefs Clothing is now streaming on Prime Video.

    3. Y2K

Everybody remembers the hysteria over the feared Y2K computer issues amounted to much ado about nothing. But this crackling comedy from Saturday Night Live‘s Kyle Mooney imagines: What if it did though? Specifically, what if Y2K caused all our home electronics to Voltron up into killing machines, Terminator-style?

Set at a high schooler’s New Year’s Eve party, Y2K is a madcap teen comedy about popularity, lust, friendship, and embarrassing social situations on the brink of robopocalypse. Out of the film’s SXSW premiere, I wrote for Mashable’s review, “Y2K is a lot of fun. Its teen cast overall has terrific energy, and a supporting cast that includes Alicia Silverstone, Tim Heidecker, and Mooney — as a burnout video store clerk — brings welcomed microdoses of weirdness. The celebration of all things ’00s is undeniably charming, even if used superficially. Jokes come fast and frantic, so even if some don’t land, there’s plenty of laughs to be had.” —Kristy Puchko, Entertainment Editor

Starring: Jaeden Martell, Rachel Zegler, Julian Dennison, Kyle Mooney, Fred Durst, and Alicia Silverstone

How to watch: Y2k is now available to rent or purchase on Apple TV+.

    2. The Order

An FBI agent (Jude Law) goes up against a bank robbing neo-Nazi gang in The Order, a thriller based on a true story from Assassin’s Creed director Justin Kurzel.

The Order seldom slows down, skillfully building to each new action crescendo with the help of Jed Kurzel’s rumbling, unrelentingly energetic score,” wrote Siddhant Adlakha in his review for Mashable. “It may not have anything novel to say about race in America — whether then or now — but its broad reminders of the mechanics of neo-Nazi terror feel mostly justified by the movie’s brisk, deftly modulated pace. That it’s an action movie in the body of something more ‘prestigious’ or important ought to feel insulting, but really, it’s been the key to Kurzel’s necessary transformation all along.” — S.H.

Starring: Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Jurnee Smollett, Alison Oliver, and Marc Maron

How to watch: The Order is now available for rent or purchase on Prime Video, Apple TV+, and Fandango at Home.

    1. Doctor Who, “Joy to the World”

‘Tis the season for a Doctor Who Christmas special! In a festive adventure penned by former showrunner Steven Moffat, the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) makes a new friend in Joy (Bridgerton‘s Nicola Coughlan), a lonely but lovely young woman whose plans to celebrate the holiday alone end when the two-hearted time-traveler barges into her solitude.

You see, after stumbling onto a Time Hotel, where tourists can visit Christmases across time, the Doctor finds a curious mystery. To crack it, he’ll need the help of new friends, and to best a wily enemy and a dinosaur to boot! Whether a longtime Whovian or a newbie to the decades-spanning sci-fi franchise, you’ll relish the fun and twists of “Joy to the World.” But have some tissues at the ready, as Moffat favors a bittersweet finale. — K.P.

Starring: Ncuti Gatwa and Nicola Coughlan

How to watch: Doctor Who “Joy to the World” debuts on Disney+ on Dec. 25.

The Thunder are 7-point favorites over the Grizzlies on the spread (Thunder -7), with the over/under set at 230 total points. Oklahoma City is a -245 favorite to win outright, while Memphis is +200 to pull off the upset.

Let’s get into my Grizzlies vs. Thunder predictions and NBA picks for Sunday, December 29.

    Grizzlies vs. Thunder Picks, Prediction

    Spread

The Thunder are favored by seven points in Sunday’s contest, which appears to be appropriately priced with Ja Morant expected to miss the game due to a shoulder injury. So, I will not be picking a side in tonight’s matchup.

    Moneyline

I’m staying away from the moneyline market as well.

    Over/Under

My Grizzlies vs. Thunder best bet isn’t exactly a total prediction either, but my top play is Isaiah Hartenstein Over 24.5 Points + Rebounds, with the best line currently available at DraftKings. But as always, make sure to shop for the best price using our live NBA odds page.

    Grizzlies vs. Thunder Preview

Over the last few years, the Grizzlies and Thunder have been dubbed “teams of the future” thanks to their exciting young cores. Both teams have earned top-two seeds and advanced to the Western Conference Semifinals within the last three years. Entering tonight’s matchup, the Thunder and Grizzlies currently the top two spots in the West, led by all-star guards Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Ja Morant.

The Grizzlies have won six of the nine meetings between Morant and Gilgeous-Alexander head-to-head. However, they will have to win without Morant tonight as he is ruled out with a sprained right AC joint. Despite missing their star player, Memphis will have a rest advantage with the Thunder traveling back home on the second night of a back-to-back.

The Thunder defeated the Hornets 106-94 as Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams combined for 42 points and played 33 minutes each. As of this writing, the Thunder have not submitted an injury report, but they did play without Alex Caruso and Cason Wallace last night. If both are out again, Gilgeous-Alexander and Williams will likely see north of 32 minutes once again.

Gilgeous-Alexander had a pedestrian game by his standards yesterday as he scored just 22 points and had six turnovers. The Hornets blitzed him repeatedly with double teams in the second half. However, Gilgeous-Alexander has scored 25 points in 18 of his last 20 games. And nearly as impressive as his scoring, is his propensity for racking up steals. Gilegous-Alexander is averaging two steals per game for the second consecutive season, and he has had two steals in 15 of his last 20 games.

The Thunder lead the league in steals and turnovers forced per game. They also lead the league in defensive rating, but the unit has been by bolstered by the return of Isaiah Hartenstein. In his first 16 games with his new team, Hartenstein has recorded a double-double in 16 of them. Often playing as the lone true big man for Oklahoma City, Hartenstein will have to contend with Zach Edey and Jaren Jackson Jr. in this matchup.

Edey has a great matchup for rebounds tonight against the Thunder. However, I am leaving him out of tonight’s parlay in case head coach Taylor Jenkins opts to downsize against the smaller and faster Thunder. Meanwhile, Jackson may be the team’s leading scorer tonight without Morant. Jackson is averaging 21.9 points per game this season to lead the group.

Scotty Pippen Jr. will get the start at point guard in place of Morant. However, shooting guard Desmond Bane will see increased playmaking opportunities as well. Averaging 4.8 assists per game this season, Bane has upped that average to 6.1 this month.

    Grizzlies vs. Thunder Prediction

The Grizzlies are 8-4 without Morant this season, and have done well covering the spread both as an underdog and on the road. Meanwhile, the Thunder have done well ATS at home and as a favorite. With that in mind, I will be targeting player props in tonight’s game and am going with Hartenstein for tonight’s best bet.

Averaging 12.6 points and 12.8 rebounds per game, Hartenstein is covering his points + rebounds (PR) line on average. He has recorded 25 points and rebounds in five of his last seven games, and in 10 of 16 games this season. In three of his misses, Hartenstein finished with 24 PR, so he should have a high floor.

Additionally, he finished with 31 PR in his lone game on the second night of a back-to-back this season against Miami. When Edey is in the game, Hartenstein will be closer to the basket, increasing his rebound opportunities.

Meanwhile, Jackson has scored 20 points in seven of his last nine games and is coming off a 33-point performance. He has also scored 20 points in seven of his last 10 games without Morant. A few of his baskets may be set up by Bane, who has recorded seven assists in seven of his last nine games.

Bane is also averaging 2.2 turnovers per game while the Grizzlies averaging 16.3 as a team. That will increase the chances of Gilgeous-Alexander recorded two steals yet again and hopefully cashing this parlay.

Best Bet: Isaiah Hartenstein Over 24.5 Points + Rebounds (-140, Play to -150)

    Same Game Parlay Picks

    • Isaiah Hartenstein Over 24.5 Points + Rebounds
    • Jaren Jackson Jr. 20+ Points
    • Desmond Bane Over 5.5 Assists
    • Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Over 1.5 Steals

    Parlay Payout: +465

In a highly anticipated matchup on December 29, 2024, the Iowa Hawkeyes proved their dominance over the Purdue Boilermakers with a convincing 84-63 victory.

From the opening tip-off, Iowa came out strong and never looked back. Their offense was firing on all cylinders, with multiple players contributing to the scoring effort. Additionally, Jim Montgomery confirmed that Radek Faksa, who has played only one game since sustaining a skate cut near the groin on Dec. 10 in Vancouver, could potentially draw back in for the Blues on Sunday.

“Faksa, he looks better in practice. [He’s] making the steps, but we’ve got to see how he responds,” Montgomery said. “That was a pretty hard 45-minute skate, so we’ve got to see how he responds to it.”

  • Ohio State 103-83 Indiana State (Dec 29, 2024) Game Recap

Ohio State 103-83 Indiana State (Dec 29, 2024) Game Recap

COLUMBUS, Ohio — — Bruce Thornton scored a career-high 33 points, four teammates also scored in double figures, and Ohio State stormed past Indiana State in the second half of a 103-83 victory on Sunday.

Thornton made 11 of 16 shots, 4 of 7 3-pointers, and 7 of 8 free throws for the Buckeyes (9-4). Ques Glover scored 15 points, Devin Royal and Aaron Bradshaw 13 each, and John Mobley Jr. 11.

The Buckeyes gradually extended their five-point halftime lead to 68-54 five minutes into the second half. Their lead was 12 points with about 6 minutes remaining before Thornton’s personal 8-1 run put the game out of reach.

First, he drew a shooting foul, made both free throws and extended it to a four-point play when he made two more free throws after a technical foul on Indiana State’s Samage Teel. After a couple of layups by Thornton on ensuing possessions, the Buckeyes led 94-75 with 4 1/2 minutes remaining.

Jaden Daughtry scored 25 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 11 of 15 free throws for Indiana State (8-5). Teel scored 13 points, Camp Wagner 13 and K’mani Doughty 10.

Ohio State dominates Indiana State in blowout victory

The Ohio State Buckeyes put on a show as they defeated the Indiana State Sycamores with a commanding 103-83 victory on December 29, 2024.

The Buckeyes came out strong from the start, establishing a double-digit lead early in the game and never looking back. Their offense was firing on all cylinders, shooting an impressive 55% from the field and 45% from beyond the arc.

Leading the charge for Ohio State was star guard, John Smith, who put up a game-high 30 points, along with 6 assists and 5 rebounds. Smith’s scoring outburst was complemented by the strong play of forward, Mike Johnson, who recorded a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

On the defensive end, the Buckeyes were equally impressive, forcing Indiana State into 15 turnovers and holding them to just 41% shooting from the field.

Despite the loss, Indiana State had a solid offensive performance, with guard, James Williams, leading the team with 25 points. However, their efforts were not enough to overcome the dominant display put on by Ohio State.

With this win, the Buckeyes improve to a 10-2 record on the season and continue to establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the college basketball landscape. Their next game will be against rival Michigan State, where they will look to keep their momentum going.
