    Inflation closed out 2024 on a strong note, as a price gauge the Federal Reserve focuses on came in well above the central bank’s target.

    The personal consumption expenditures price index increased 2.6% on a year over year basis, 0.2 percentage point higher than the November reading and in line with the Dow Jones estimate.

    Excluding food and energy, core PCE registered a 2.8% reading, also meeting expectations and the same as the prior month. Though the Fed considers both readings, historically officials have seen core as the better gauge of long-run inflation.

    On a monthly basis, headline PCE rose 0.3% while core increased 0.2%, both in line with forecasts as well.

    The Fed targets annual inflation at 2%, a level the price gauge has not seen since February 2021.

    The report comes two days after the central bank voted unanimously to hold its key interest rate in a range between 4.25%-4.5%, taking a break after three consecutive cuts totaling a full percentage point.

    In remarks delivered Friday morning, Fed Governor Michelle Bowman said she expects inflation to decelerate through 2025, but thinks the central bank should stay on hold until there are clear signs that is happening.

    “There is still more work to be done to bring inflation closer to our 2 percent goal. I would like to see progress in lowering inflation resume before we make further adjustments to the target range,” Bowman said in remarks before business leaders in Portsmouth, N.H. “I do expect that inflation will begin to decline again and that by year-end it will be lower than where it now stands.”

    The report Friday also showed that personal income increased 0.4% as forecast, while spending rose 0.7%, or one-tenth of a percentage point ahead of the estimate.

    LAS VEGAS — Brightline West no longer expects to launch operations in time to capitalize on visitors to the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, according to a company bond offering.

    KTNV-TV reports that the 1,200 pages of documents related to that bond offering indicate that passenger service is now likely to begin in December 2028.

    The bond offering is aiming to raise about $2.5 billion through the bond offering for the estimated $12.4 billion project. The company and Federal Railroad Administration have already signed off on a $3 billion federal grant [see “FRA finalizes …,” Trains News Wire, Sept. 26, 2024].

    While the company has yet to finalize its ticketing strategy, the documents project the average one-way fare will be $119, or $133 for a premium ticket.

  • Existing-Home Sales Ascended 2.2% in December


    WASHINGTON (January 24, 2025) – Existing-home sales climbed in December, according to the National Association of REALTORS®. Sales advanced in three major U.S. regions and slipped in the Midwest. Year-over-year, sales accelerated in all four regions.

    On an annual basis, existing-home sales (4.06 million) declined to the lowest level since 1995, while the median price reached a record high of $407,500 in 2024.

    Total existing-home sales1 – completed transactions that include single-family homes, townhomes, condominiums and co-ops – elevated 2.2% from November to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.24 million in December. Year-over-year, sales swelled 9.3% (up from 3.88 million in December 2023).

    “Home sales in the final months of the year showed solid recovery despite elevated mortgage rates,” said NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun. “Home sales during the winter are typically softer than the spring and summer, but momentum is rising with sales climbing year-over-year for three straight months. Consumers clearly understand the long-term benefits of homeownership. Job and wage gains, along with increased inventory, are positively impacting the market.”

    Total housing inventory2 registered at the end of December was 1.15 million units, down 13.5% from November but up 16.2% from one year ago (990,000). Unsold inventory sits at a 3.3-month supply at the current sales pace, down from 3.8 months in November but up from 3.1 months in December 2023.

    The median existing-home price3 for all housing types in December was $404,400, up 6.0% from one year ago ($381,400). All four U.S. regions posted price increases.

    “The median home price was elevated partly due to the upper-end market’s relative better performance,” Yun added. “Sales rose by 35% from a year ago for homes priced above $1 million, while sales fell for homes priced under $250,000.”

    REALTORS® Confidence Index

    According to the monthly REALTORS® Confidence Index, properties typically remained on the market for 35 days in December, up from 32 days in November and 29 days in December 2023.

    First-time buyers were responsible for 31% of sales in December, up from 30% in November 2024 and 29% in December 2023. NAR’s 2024 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers – released November 20244 – found that the annual share of first-time buyers was 24%, the lowest ever recorded.

    Cash sales accounted for 28% of transactions in December, up from 25% in November but down from 29% in December 2023.
    Individual investors or second-home buyers, who make up many cash sales, purchased 16% of homes in December, up from 13% in November and identical to December 2023.

    Distressed sales5 – foreclosures and short sales – represented 2% of sales in December, unchanged from November and the previous year.

    Mortgage Rates

    According to Freddie Mac, the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.96% as of January 23. That’s down from 7.04% one week ago but up from 6.69% one year ago.

    Single-family and Condo/Co-op Sales

    Single-family home sales moved higher by 1.9% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 3.83 million in December, up 10.1% from the prior year. The median existing single-family home price was $409,300 in December, up 6.1% from December 2023.
    Existing condominium and co-op sales increased 5.1% in December to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 410,000 units, up 2.5% from one year ago (400,000). The median existing condo price was $359,000 in December, up 4.5% from the previous year ($343,500).

    Regional Breakdown

    In December, existing-home sales in the Northeast grew 3.9% from November to an annual rate of 530,000, up 10.4% from December 2023. The median price in the Northeast was $478,900, up 11.8% from last year.

    In the Midwest, existing-home sales slid 1.0% in December to an annual rate of 990,000, up 6.5% from the prior year. The median price in the Midwest was $298,600, up 9.0% from December 2023.

    Existing-home sales in the South increased 3.2% from November to an annual rate of 1.93 million in December, up 9.0% from one year before. The median price in the South was $361,800, up 3.4% from one year earlier.

    In the West, existing-home sales rose 2.6% in December to an annual rate of 790,000, up 12.9% from a year ago. The median price in the West was $614,500, up 6.0% from December 2023.

    Existing-home sales, based on closings, differ from the U.S. Census Bureau’s series on new single-family home sales, which are based on contracts or the acceptance of a deposit. Because of these differences, it is not uncommon for each series to move in different directions in the same month. In addition, existing-home sales, which account for more than 90% of total home sales, are based on a much larger data sample – about 40% of multiple listing service data each month – and typically are not subject to large prior-month revisions.

    The annual rate for a particular month represents what the total number of actual sales for a year would be if the relative pace for that month were maintained for 12 consecutive months. Seasonally adjusted annual rates are used in reporting monthly data to factor out seasonal variations in resale activity. For example, home sales volume is normally higher in the summer than in the winter, primarily because of differences in the weather and family buying patterns. However, seasonal factors cannot compensate for abnormal weather patterns.

    Single-family data collection began monthly in 1968, while condo data collection began quarterly in 1981; the series were combined in 1999 when monthly collection of condo data began. Prior to this period, single-family homes accounted for more than nine out of 10 purchases. Historic comparisons for total home sales prior to 1999 are based on monthly single-family sales, combined with the corresponding quarterly sales rate for condos.

    2 Total inventory and month’s supply data are available back through 1999, while single-family inventory and month’s supply are available back to 1982 (prior to 1999, single-family sales accounted for more than 90% of transactions and condos were measured only on a quarterly basis).

    The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console worldwide with 3.42 million units sold for December 2024, according to VGChartz estimates. The PlayStation 5 has now sold an estimated 71.03 million units lifetime worldwide.

    The Nintendo Switch sold an estimated 2.69 million units to bring its lifetime sales to 148.79 million units. The Xbox Series X|S sold 0.97 million units to bring their lifetime sales to 32.17 million units. The PlayStation 4 sold an estimated 5,163 units to bring its lifetime sales to 117.20 million units.

    PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2017 are down by nearly 0.49 million units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by nearly 1.53 million units. PS4 sold 3.91 million units for the month of December 2017 and Xbox One sales were at 2.50 million units.

    PlayStation 5 sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 306,486 (-8.2%). Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 881,070 units (-47.6%) and Nintendo Switch sales are down by 813,519 units (-23.2%). The PlayStation 4 is down by 23,077 units (-81.7%) year-over-year.

    Looking at sales month-on-month, PlayStation 5 sales are up down by over 0.62 million units, Xbox Series X|S sales are up by nearly 0.22 million units, and Nintendo Switch sales are up by over 0.95 million units.

    2024 year-to-date, the PlayStation 5 has sold an estimated 18.65 million units, the Nintendo Switch has sold 12.05 million units, and the Xbox Series X|S has sold 4.97 million units.

    VGChartz Methodology: Hardware estimates are based on retail sampling and trends in individual countries, which are then extrapolated to represent the wider region. This typically allows us to produce figures that end up being within 10% of the actual totals.

    This data is regularly compared against official shipment figures released by the console manufacturers and figures estimated by regional trackers with greater market coverage than ourselves. We then update our own estimates to bring them into line with those figures. This can result in frequent changes often within a short space of time, but we feel it’s important to prioritise accuracy over consistency.

    Note that our estimates are based on sell-through data (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases the figures released by console manufacturers are based on shipment data (sell-in), where as soon as a device has left the factory and entered the supply chain for delivery it is considered a sale. This is why there is always a difference between the companies’ figures (sell-in) and VGChartz estimates (sell-through), even after we’ve made adjustments. The one exception to that is when a console has been discontinued and the remaining stock has finally sold out – at that point the figures will match.

  • Caleb Wilson secretly committed to North Carolina over Kentucky in December


    The Kentucky Wildcats have been able to gain commitments from big names like Malachi Moreno and Jasper Johnson. However, they barely missed out on Caleb Wilson, who is one of the premier players of the class of 2025.

    Both Johnson and Moreno rank between 20 and 30 in the upcoming recruiting class, per 247 Sports. Wilson is a fringe top-10 player, currently at No. 9. For a long time, he had Kentucky on his radar, and it all came down to the Cats against the North Carolina Tar Heels.

    Unfortunately, the 5-star talent took the latter and will be playing the majority of his college games in Chapel Hill. That was expected to happen for the last week after momentum seemingly shifted to the Tar Heels.

    However, the reality is momentum in favor of UNC long before that. According to 247 Sports’ Travis Branham, Wilson had his mind made up for over a month.

    Wilson is playing for Holy Innocents Episcopal School out of Atlanta, so he didn’t necessarily have many ties with North Carolina or Kentucky.

    That said, as a senior, Wilson is averaging 18.9 points and hauling down 11.3 rebounds per game in 27 minutes of action, per MaxPreps. He’s been a star at the high school level and is expected to make that jump to the college ranks fairly easily.

    As for the Wildcats, they’ll have to look elsewhere for a standout forward to add to the 2025-26 basketball roster.

  • FBI closed DEI office in December, agency says


    EXCLUSIVE: The FBI has closed its DEI office, Fox News can confirm. 

    “In recent weeks, the FBI took steps to close the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI), effective by December 2024,” the agency told Fox News Digital on Thursday. 

    The agency didn’t specify why it had closed the office, although many Republicans have been critical of it prioritizing diversity, equity and inclusion, saying that had overshadowed national security. 

    Earlier this month, Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn sent a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray claiming that “radical” DEI practices had “endangered” Americans following the New Year’s Day terrorist attack in New Orleans.

    “I am deeply concerned that—under your leadership—the Bureau has prioritized Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives over its core mission of protecting the American people,” Balckburn wrote in the Jan. 3 letter after referencing the attack. 

    After the announcement, Blackburn said in a post on X: “The question is why were they allowed to be focused on DEI in the first place? The FBI should be focused on catching criminals, not winning participation trophies.”

    President-elect Trump also commented on its closure, writing on Truth Social: “We demand that the FBI preserve and retain all records, documents, and information on the now closing DEI Office—Never should have been opened and, if it was, should have closed long ago. Why is it that they’re closing one day before the Inauguration of a new Administration? The reason is, CORRUPTION!”

    The FBI page on diversity and inclusion – that was still on its website as of Thursday – says the agency is “committed to cultivating a diverse and inclusive workforce. In 2015, the FBI added diversity as one of the organization’s core values.

    It continued: “We believe that differences in thought and belief, in race and religion, in orientation, and in ability contribute to more effective decision making, drive innovation, and enhance the employee experience. We know that a more diverse workforce allows us to connect with and maintain the trust of the American people. We also understand we have work to do. We stand committed, as today’s FBI, to fostering a culture of inclusivity and diversity.” 

    Former FBI special agent and Fox News contributor Nicole Parker told Fox News Digital: “I appreciate all forms of diversity. Make no mistake of that. What I do not appreciate is when there is a constant push for social justice weaponization at the FBI whose top priorities are to protect the American people and uphold the Constitution.”

    She added that FBI Director Christopher Wray has made it clear that threats across and against the nation are “at an all-time high. ‘Flashing red lights,’ as he has stated in congressional testimony. There is no time for clubs, groups, or social agendas that divert time, attention and resources away from the mission of the FBI to protect the American people.”

    “DEI is a dangerous distraction,” she continued. “I have no issue in celebrating whatever you would like regarding your heritage or gender or religion. But that should be done on your own time and not with the U.S. taxpayers’ dollars while on official Bureau time.”

    Parker added, “The FBI needs to focus on hiring the best and brightest based solely on meritocracy. Americans deserve the best. I have never been on an operation or heard of a civilian calling into the FBI and requesting an individual of a certain race or gender provide them with assistance in solving their problem or stopping a crime they’ve fallen victim to. Americans simply want to be safe.”

    “The FBI should be focused on being one in fighting crime, not various groups and divisions that divide,” she said. 

    Parker also noted that there are numerous other groups within the FBI aside from the DEI office, including the American Indian and Alaska Native Advisory Committee, Asian Pacific American Advisory Committee, Black Affairs Diversity Committee, Bureau Equality, Hispanic Advisory Board, Near and Middle East Advisory Committee, Persons with Disabilities Advisory Committee, Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee, and the Women’s Advisory Committee. 

    She said the bureau also has numerous resource groups, including Blacks in Government, FBI African American Millennials, FBI Family, FBI Jewish Americans, FBI Latinos for Empowerment Advancement and Development, FBI Pride, Federal Asian Pacific American Counsel, Federally Employed Women, From Boots to Suits and the Toastmasters Club. 

    Wray announced in December that he planned to resign with nearly three years left in his term, citing Trump’s desire for a change in leadership at the agency. 

    This is President Biden’s last week in office. President-elect Trump will take office on Monday. 

    Fox News Digital has reached out to Kash Patel, Trump’s pick to lead the FBI, for comment. 

    The FBI’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion was created in 2012 during the Obama administration with its goal to provide “guidance and implement programs that promote a diverse and inclusive workplace that allows all employees to succeed and advance.”
