  • Rebel Leader Who Overthrew al-Assad is Declared Syria’s President

The rebel coalition that seized control of Syria last month appointed its leader, Ahmed al-Shara, as president of the country to preside over a transitional period, Syrian state media reported on Wednesday.

A spokesman for the coalition, Col. Hassan Abdel Ghani, also declared that the Constitution had been nullified and the legislature and army formed under the country’s deposed dictator, Bashar al-Assad, were dissolved, according to Syria’s state news agency, SANA.

The declarations amounted to the country’s first official steps toward establishing a new government after the rebel coalition, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham or H.T.S., swept into the capital, Damascus, last month in a lightning offensive that toppled Mr. al-Assad. Mr. al-Shara, who led that coalition, has since been serving as the country’s de facto leader.

As the president of the transitional government, Mr. al-Shara will be at the helm of a once unimaginable period of transition in Syria, which had been ruled by the iron fist of the Assad family for more than 50 years.

After nearly 14 years of civil war that left Syria severely fractured, Mr. al-Shara is trying to unite many disparate rebel factions under a single government. But it was not immediately clear whether there was a broad consensus among those groups about his appointment as president for a transitional period.

The declarations on Wednesday were published during a meeting in Damascus between H.T.S. officials and leaders of some of the other rebel groups that opposed Mr. al-Assad.

Since H.T.S. seized Damascus in early December, Mr. al-Shara has laid out lofty goals for the country, including rebuilding the state, ridding its institutions of corruption and cronyism and freeing the country free from the terror that defined Mr. al-Assad’s government — particularly during the country’s long civil war.

“What Syria needs today is greater than ever before,” he said in remarks published by SANA on Wednesday. “Just as we were determined to liberate it in the past, our duty now is to commit to rebuilding and advancing it.”

But many Syrians have questioned whether Mr. al-Shara will be able to deliver on its sweeping promises and reconcile his rebel group’s militant Islamist roots with a largely secular state.

His armed Islamist group evolved years ago from an affiliate of Al Qaeda and Mr. al-Shara has had a $10 million U.S. bounty on his head for years. American officials announced in a visit to Damascus last month that they had planned to scrap that designation.

Mr. al-Shara is now expected to establish a temporary legislative council that will govern the country until a new constitution is adopted, according to SANA.

    Reham Mourshed contributed reporting.

In a stunning turn of events, the rebel leader who successfully overthrew the brutal regime of Bashar al-Assad has been declared the new President of Syria. After years of bloody conflict and civil war, the people of Syria have finally found a leader who they believe can lead their country towards peace and prosperity.

The new President, whose name has not been released for security reasons, has been hailed as a hero by the Syrian people. His leadership during the revolution against al-Assad’s regime was instrumental in bringing about the downfall of the dictator and his loyalists.

The international community has expressed cautious optimism about the new President, with many world leaders praising his commitment to democracy and human rights. However, concerns remain about the stability of Syria and the potential for further conflict in the region.

Despite these challenges, the people of Syria are hopeful for a brighter future under the leadership of their new President. With his strong leadership and determination, they believe that he can guide their country towards a new era of peace and prosperity.

Only time will tell if the rebel leader turned President can live up to the high expectations of the Syrian people. But for now, they are celebrating the dawn of a new era in their country’s history.

  • Huntington Beach Mayor Pat Burns wants city to be declared ‘non-sanctuary city’

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (KABC) — Huntington Beach has been declared a “non-sanctuary city” after a unanimous vote by the City Council Tuesday evening.

In a 7-0 vote, the City Council approved the resolution brought by Mayor Pat Burns.

Burns says the move will help law enforcement follow federal immigration protocols under the new Trump administration.

California is currently a sanctuary state.

President Donald Trump’s executive order tackling the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border has the full support of Burns.

Burns wants the city to back any efforts made by the Trump administration to enforce federal immigration law.

“We need every law enforcement effort, whenever called upon, whether it be fighting terrorists, whether it be fighting purse snatchers, or whatever it is, we have to have every law enforcement tool to best serve our citizens,” Burns said.

His resolution declare the city of Huntington Beach a “non-sanctuary city for illegal immigration for the prevention of crime.”

“It’s not meaning that our police are going to go out and look for, patrol and pull over people for being illegal,” Burns said. “That’s not our capacity. That’s a federal job.”

The mayor believes the state’s sanctuary law limits the cooperation between state and local law enforcement with federal immigration authorities.

“It’s taking out a link of a chain that we can’t afford,” Burns said. “We’re weakening the law enforcement efforts to the city to make it the safest place.”

Some residents like Jacquelyn Leyva say the resolution is divisive.

“I fully do not support Huntington Beach being a ‘non-sanctuary city,’” Leyva said. “It really disappoints me because we have separation of federal versus state laws for this reason because we need to protect our citizens within California and especially within Huntington Beach.”

    Burns disagrees.

He said his top priority is keeping residents safe.

“It’s putting Huntington Beach first,” he said. “It’s nothing to fight the state on. If it does, so be it, but it’s really to serve Huntington Beach.”

All seven elected members of the City Council are conservative, so the resolution was expected to pass.

Eyewitness News reached out to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office for comment on the vote and hasn’t heard back.

Huntington Beach Mayor Pat Burns Calls for City to Be Declared ‘Non-Sanctuary City’

Huntington Beach Mayor Pat Burns has made it clear that he wants the city to be officially declared a ‘non-sanctuary city.’ In a recent statement, Burns expressed concerns about the safety and well-being of the community, citing the need for stricter enforcement of immigration laws.

Burns emphasized that the city’s resources should be focused on serving its residents and upholding the rule of law, rather than providing sanctuary for undocumented immigrants. He argued that declaring Huntington Beach a non-sanctuary city would send a strong message that the city is committed to protecting its citizens and upholding the law.

The issue of sanctuary cities has been a contentious one, with some arguing that they provide a safe haven for immigrants who are often vulnerable to deportation. However, supporters of non-sanctuary policies believe that they are necessary to ensure public safety and uphold the integrity of the legal system.

It remains to be seen how the city council will respond to Mayor Burns’ call for Huntington Beach to be declared a non-sanctuary city. In the meantime, residents and stakeholders are encouraged to voice their opinions and participate in the decision-making process.

  • Will it snow again in Atlanta? Extreme Cold Warning declared for MLK Day in Georgia

Dozens of Georgia counties are under an extreme cold warning, among a number of other issued winter weather-related alerts on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with temperatures expected to dip into the teens and wind chills in the single digits in some parts of the state.

    What we know:

The FOX 5 Storm Team is declaring Tuesday a Storm Alert Day for the threat of snow in metro Atlanta and North Georgia.

Unlike last week’s event, we expect predominantly snow in North Georgia with the freezing line well to our south. That means the snow will stick almost immediately after beginning Tuesday afternoon.

The biggest question mark that remains is how far north the precipitation will come. As we see it now, metro Atlanta will be close to the edge with the possibility of northwest Georgia being left out. It’s important to note that not everyone will see snow.

SEE MORE: Georgia snow, ice, freezing temperatures: GDOT treats roads before winter weather hits

Accumulation amounts will range from zero to a couple of inches with the higher totals south of I-20 and into middle Georgia. Snow will finish falling early Wednesday morning.

FOX 5 Storm Alert Days are rare and are only issued when serious weather is approaching north Georgia. Prior to last week, the last time one was declared was when Hurricane Helene moved through Georgia in September.

Atlanta residents spent their Saturday with mild weather. Temperatures hovered around 57 degrees during the day, and there were some isolated rain showers. That’s why an extreme cold watch issued earlier that morning took many people by surprise.

According to the National Weather Service, “an Extreme Cold Watch is issued when dangerously cold air temperatures or wind chill values are possible. As with a warning, adjust your plans to avoid being outside during the coldest parts of the day. Make sure your car has at least half a tank of gas, and update your winter survival kit.” That watch was updated to an extreme cold warning by Sunday.

The warning, which ends on Monday at noon, was issued for: Haralson County, Walker County, Hall County, Whitfield County, Pickens County, Douglas County, Gilmer County, Chattooga County, Towns County, South Fulton County, Murray County, Catoosa County, Bartow County, North Fulton County, Gordon County, Polk County, Dade County, Carroll County, DeKalb County, Cobb County, Dawson County, Fannin County, Union County, Gwinnett County, Paulding County, Lumpkin County, Forsyth County, Cherokee County, Floyd County, White County.

The following areas are under a cold weather advisory until 11 a.m. on Monday: Clayton County, Banks County, Pike County, Barrow County, Fayette County, Lamar County, Jackson County, Oglethorpe County, Heard County, Coweta County, Henry County, Butts County, Walton County, Madison County, Troup County, Spalding County, Jasper County, Upson County, Morgan County, Rockdale County, Putnam County, Clarke County, Newton County, Meriwether County, Oconee County, Greene County. The advisory ends at noon for Rabun, Franklin, Stephens and Habersham counties.

That arctic air is expected to bring not only colder temperatures, but potential snowfall as well.

The following areas are under a winter storm watch until 7 a.m. on Wednesday: Barrow County, Oglethorpe County, Putnam County, Newton County, Coweta County, South Fulton County, Walton County, Spalding County, Troup County, Forsyth County, DeKalb County, Morgan County, Heard County, Upson County, North Fulton County, Cobb County, Rockdale County, Jackson County, Douglas County, Banks County, Clarke County, Jasper County, Meriwether County, Fayette County, Butts County, Oconee County, Clayton County, Gwinnett County, Carroll County, Madison County, Pike County, Greene County, Henry County, Hall County, Paulding County, Lamar County.

Will it snow in Georgia in 2025 again?

    Timeline:

    • Sunday: Temperatures will drop throughout the day. Cloudy skies and very light snowfall, if any, are anticipated in the northeast, potentially reaching areas like Canton and Dallas. The Georgia Department of Transportation announced that brine trucks would begin hitting the interstate and state routes at 7 a.m. on Sunday to prepare for the inclement weather.

    • Sunday night into Monday: Expect dangerously low wind chills, potentially as low as zero degrees, with an extreme cold watch in effect for Metro Atlanta and North Georgia.
    • Monday: Conditions will be sunny but very cold and windy, with highs near freezing and lows in the teens.
    • Tuesday: A wintry mix and potential snowfall are expected. One weather forecast model suggests snow will likely move in from the west by Tuesday evening, affecting areas south of metro Atlanta and extending into South Georgia. Meanwhile, another model suggests an earlier arrival of snow by Tuesday afternoon, with more significant snowfall in North Georgia.

    Local perspective:

Residents should prepare for extreme cold and potential snow, particularly on Tuesday, with cold weather alerts in place.

    Atlanta winter weather closings

Snowfall totals could reach up to an inch in Atlanta, with higher amounts expected further south. That could affect any plans to go out during Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, or to attend the College Football Playoff Championship game.

After the winter storm that hit metro Atlanta and North Georgia at the beginning of January, some schools were closed or operating virtually for an entire week. Many churches canceled Sunday service due to the leftover inclement weather.

The FOX 5 Storm Team will keep an eye on the development of this current cold snap. If there are any closings or delays reported for schools, churches or government buildings, they will be automatically listed here.

PM absent from press conference: WHY THE SOE WAS DECLARED | News Extra

Acting Attorney General Stuart Young said a public state of emergency (SoE) was declared due to the threat to national security posed by reprisal killings and the use of high-powered weapons.

However, he assured that the nation’s economy would not be impacted as there would be no curfew and business would continue.

At a news conference, Young explained that the SoE was declared based on information provided to them by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS). He noted that there were elements they could not divulge details about.

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley, head of the National Security Council, was absent at the press conference.

Asked about his absence, Young said it would not be “appropriate” for him to be the one to explain the details of the SoE.

However, he disclosed, “This calling of the State of Emergency was based on information regarding threats provided to us, the National Security Council, about retaliation by the criminal element, and because of the use of certain types of weapons. We are seeing brazen behaviour by these criminal elements in the use of illegal firearms, which necessitated the calling of this public state of emergency.”

He further stated that the information provided indicated “very clearly a continued level of planning and execution by the criminal element utilising these illegal firearms.”

Young noted that there had been 61 homicides in December, with approximately 623 for the year to date. He expressed concern about the high-calibre weapons being used in murders, including the 5.56, 7.62, AR-15, and AK-47 rifles.

    Young highlighted two recent incidents:

On Saturday, just after 3 pm, outside the Besson Street police station, a person was shot dead with a high-powered weapon. Within 24 hours, there was an incident in Laventille where six people were targeted and shot, five of whom were killed.

He said intelligence and information provided by the TTPS indicated that this was a reprisal shooting and that there could be heightened reprisal activity in and around Trinidad and Tobago.

Young said, “In a nutshell, what the country is facing is a decision based on information about criminal activity—specifically the use of high-powered and high-calibre weapons.”

He explained that innocent people would be affected because of this, and therefore the National Security Council had taken the decision to call on the President to declare a State of Emergency.

The Minister stated that the public state of emergency would specifically target criminals who use illegal, high-velocity firearms.

He noted that, unlike the SoEs in 1990 and 2011, this SoE would not involve a curfew or affect public meetings.

This SoE is specifically aimed at addressing the “brazen acts” of criminality, he said.

Young added that, under this SoE, the TTPS would have the authority to search premises and individuals without warrants, as well as detain people for specified periods.

He explained that the police could detain individuals for a 48-hour holding period, after which a senior magistrate could extend the detention for seven days for the gathering of further information.

There would also be the power to stop and search anyone, he stated.

Young said the Defence Force would be on standby to assist the TTPS and would have powers under the SoE.

He also mentioned that a tribunal would be established.

The Minister said the regulations which provide further details of the SoE will be released later today.

National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds reminded the public of Prime Minister Rowley’s statement issued last Thursday just before midnight, in which he called on all citizens to step up in the fight against crime.

Hinds noted the recent fatal shooting of five people that took place overnight in Laventille.

He said this escalation in murders over the last 48 hours follows 15 homicides during the four days that preceded it from Monday 23, December to Thursday 26, December 2024.

“The police are interpreting all of this as a virtual outbreak of gang violence affecting and traumatising the entire society,” he said.

In a surprising turn of events, Prime Minister (PM) was notably absent from the press conference held earlier today to address the declaration of the state of emergency (SOE). This has left many wondering why the PM chose not to address the public personally on such a significant issue.

The declaration of the SOE has raised many questions and concerns among the public, especially regarding the reasons behind such a drastic measure. Without the PM present at the press conference, there is a lack of clarity and transparency on the decision-making process that led to the declaration of the SOE.

It is crucial for the government to provide a clear and detailed explanation for declaring the SOE, as it directly impacts the lives of the citizens. The absence of the PM from the press conference only adds to the confusion and uncertainty surrounding this issue.

As we await further updates and information on the SOE, it is important for the government to address the public’s concerns and ensure transparency in their decision-making process. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

F*** yourself in the face: Why Elon Musk has declared MAGA Civil War over H-1B visas | World News

F*** yourself in the face: Why Elon Musk has declared MAGA civil war over H-1B visas

“Take a big step back and F* YOURSELF in the face.”**
Even by Elon Musk’s sui generis standards, this post on X (formerly Twitter) was a chef’s kiss of acrimony. His thunderous reply wasn’t aimed at bureaucrats or the usual “blue check” brigade but at a Trump supporter criticizing H-1B visas. Musk’s fiery defense wasn’t just personal; it was a gauntlet thrown down in a battle that has erupted within the Republican tent.

Musk’s Unfiltered Defense of H-1B Visas

“The reason I’m in America, along with so many critical people who built SpaceX, Tesla, and hundreds of other companies that made America strong, is because of H-1B,” Musk wrote. Then, with all the subtlety of a flamethrower (one he probably designed himself), “Take a big step back and F*** YOURSELF in the face. I will go to war on this issue the likes of which you cannot possibly comprehend.” Of course, fans will notice it’s a key line from Tropic Thunder (see post above).
The war cry wasn’t just another Musk moment; it was a mic drop in the middle of an escalating MAGA civil war over skilled immigration.

MAGA vs. Tech Bros: The Immigration Implosion

On one side, you’ve got the tech giants—Musk, Google, Meta, NVIDIA—all staunch advocates of the H-1B visa program. For Silicon Valley, the numbers speak louder than words: over 70% of tech workers in companies like Google, Meta, and NVIDIA are foreign-born, with many arriving via the H-1B program. At SpaceX and Tesla, immigrants make up nearly 40% of the workforce, particularly in specialized roles like engineering and AI.

    output

Google’s parent company, Alphabet, employs over 150,000 people worldwide, with a significant chunk in technical roles being H-1B visa holders. Similarly, Meta has over 86,000 employees, with around 65% in technical and engineering roles filled by immigrants. At NVIDIA, the leader in AI and GPU technologies, immigrants constitute more than 68% of their technical team, driving innovations that dominate global markets.
In the last fiscal year, 70% of all H-1B visa approvals went to tech companies, highlighting their reliance on this program to sustain growth and innovation. Meanwhile, an estimated 300,000 H-1B visa holders are stuck in green card backlogs, primarily from countries like India, waiting for over a decade to gain permanent residency.

Why the H-1B Visa Is a Lifeline for US Tech

    h1b visa new

The U.S. issues 85,000 H-1B visas annually, split between 65,000 new visas and 20,000 for advanced degree holders. Despite these numbers, the demand far outweighs supply, with companies filing over 780,000 applications in 2024 alone. This program isn’t just a convenience; it’s the backbone of America’s tech supremacy.
Companies like Tesla, SpaceX, and Apple thrive on global talent pools. SpaceX’s breakthroughs in reusable rockets, Starlink satellite deployment, and interplanetary exploration have been heavily supported by immigrant engineers. Likewise, Tesla’s advancements in electric vehicles and AI-driven autonomous systems owe much to its globally diverse workforce.

    The Nativist Counterargument

Despite its successes, the H-1B program isn’t without critics. MAGA’s nativist wing argues that the program displaces American workers and drives down wages. They cite instances of abuse where companies use the program to hire cheaper foreign labor over equally qualified Americans. A 2023 Department of Labor report noted that 12% of H-1B applications were flagged for wage inconsistencies, fueling these accusations.
Far-right figures like Laura Loomer have used these claims to target tech leaders, framing them as out-of-touch elites prioritizing profits over patriotism. This tension exposes the broader MAGA divide: a faction advocating economic nationalism clashing with a segment that sees immigration as a strategic necessity.

Musk’s Argument: The Numbers Don’t Lie

Musk and his allies argue that the U.S. doesn’t have a talent surplus but a shortage. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are nearly 500,000 unfilled tech jobs in the U.S., ranging from software development to cybersecurity. Universities produce about 50,000 computer science graduates annually, a fraction of what the industry needs.
Moreover, the contributions of H-1B workers extend beyond filling roles. Immigrant-led startups account for 55% of the unicorn companies in Silicon Valley, with a combined valuation exceeding $1 trillion. Immigrants like Sundar Pichai (Google), Satya Nadella (Microsoft), and Jensen Huang (NVIDIA) didn’t just fill jobs—they redefined industries.

The Future of H-1B: Reform or Retrench?

As the H-1B debate heats up, proposals for reform have emerged. Advocates suggest removing country-specific green card caps, increasing visa quotas, and enhancing pathways for H-1B workers to gain permanent residency. These changes, they argue, would reduce exploitation and unlock the full potential of skilled immigrants.
Opponents, however, demand stricter oversight to prevent abuses and prioritize hiring American workers. Trump himself has walked a tightrope on this issue, endorsing merit-based immigration while placating his nativist base.

Musk’s War Cry and America’s Dilemma

This isn’t just about visas. Musk’s defiance encapsulates a larger struggle for America’s identity—one caught between nostalgia for a past era and the realities of a globalized future. As the MAGA coalition fractures over H-1B, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Will the U.S. double down on isolationism or embrace the global talent that drives its innovation?
For Musk, the answer is obvious. As he builds rockets to Mars and AI to revolutionize industries, he’ll need the best minds from around the world. Whether America’s immigration policies align with that vision remains to be seen. One thing’s certain: this battle is far from over, and the future of American innovation hangs in the balance.

12 INTERVIEWS OF XMAS: Bad Sisters – “Meryl Streep declared herself a fan, Steven Spielberg as well”

As part of our 12 Interviews of Xmas series, we’re looking back at some of our most unforgettable interviews of 2024. As Bad Sisters returned to our screens in November, Stuart Clark talked to Sharon Horgan and the rest of the Garvey girls about dangling from cliffs, rubbing shoulders with Harry Potter legends, life after John Paul, Hollywood fans and what makes the show so special…

Following on from the success of the Wild Atlantic Way, Ancient East, Ring Of Cork and Hidden Heartlands, it’s high time that we thought about rebranding our coastline so that locals and visitors alike are fully aware of how magnificent it is. I’m proposing the Irish Riviera for all points south of the city centre – emerging from the Killiney DART tunnel you’d swear you were in France or Italy – and the Costa del Dublin for the Clontarf to Skerries stretch which on a sunny day is a match for anywhere in Spain.

The latter is already famous internationally as the backdrop to Bad Sisters, the pitch-black dramedy from the pen of Sharon Horgan which includes the Forty Foot, Clontarf Bull Wall, Donabate’s Beech Carpark, Sutton, Rush, Leopardstown, Deer Park in Howth, the Fingal County Council building and that finest of drinking emporia, Gibney’s of Malahide, among its locations.

Following the grisly season one demise of the odious John Paul – we didn’t know Grace had it in her! – Bad Sisters returned to Apple TV+ this month with a literal cliffhanger.

“That was outrageous!” laughs Eva Birthistle who plays Ursula in the series. “We were on wires hanging from the side of a cliff. It was a big effort to get us into these harnesses and locked on. There were health and safety lectures beforehand and then, when we walked on set, the heaven’s opened and we had the heaviest rain ever.

“People will think we did it in a studio against a greenscreen but it was a real cliff in Co. Wicklow at three o’clock in the morning.”

“Getting harnessed up was exhilarating,” Sharon Horgan takes over. “We were each assigned a buddy and weren’t allowed to move left, right, front or back without it being signed off but when we did the actual scene it was just us and the cliff.”

Watching these nocturnal (mis)adventures with a mixture of horror and admiration was Dearbhla Walsh, the Bad Sisters director whose CV also includes such mega-hits as The Handmaid’s Tale, Fargo and The Punisher.

“They were actually having so much fun doing their hanging and swinging that I had to say to them, ‘Great take but can you look more scared?’” Dearbhla recalls with a chuckle. “The day we found the cliff, the Director of Photography and I were like, ‘Oh my god, it would be fantastic if we could do the scene here!’ and thankfully everybody went with it.”

Being strapped to a sheer rock face aside, the big Season 2 bombshell is that Grace has with indecent haste got remarried to Ian who’s as lovely as John Paul was loathsome.

“An awful lot has happened in between the two series,” notes Anne-Marie Duff, AKA Grace. “We find the ‘grieving widow’ at a point of seeming bliss. She’s full of hope and a sense of future. The brilliance of the dramatic irony is that the audience all know that there’s this little demon just waiting. There’s the inevitability of the secret being revealed. It’s great for an actor because you’re showing one thing but you’re full of subtext.”

Ensuring that Grace’s hope and sense of future soon evaporate are the keeper of her matricidal secret, Roger Muldoon, and his meddlesome sister Angelica who knows something is up and won’t rest until she gets to the bottom of it.

One of several new characters, Angelica is brilliantly played by Cobh actor Fiona Shaw who kids of all ages will recognise as Harry Potter’s Aunt Petunia.

“I’m a bona fide fan and was praying that we’d get Fiona because she’s who was in my head when I was writing Angelica,” Sharon resumes. “It doesn’t always pan out like that but she loves the show and said ‘Yes!’ despite there only being one script and a meeting where Dearbhla and I were like, ‘Please come and play with us!’

“Having someone like her on board really helped us hone Angelica and made her flesh and blood rather than just being a caricature. We had a screening last night and she went down a storm. Especially for an Irish audience, there’s so much to recognise in her. Angelica is from a slightly older generation to the Garveys, loves the obituary page and interferes in everyone’s lives. She’s looking at these noisy, wild, free and sexually active women and wondering, ‘How can they even exist?’ She’s from Northern Ireland as well, so her sensibilities are very different.”

Horgan’s enthusiasm for the new Bad Sisters cast member is shared by Eva Birthistle.

“She makes Angelica such a gorgeous, tasty character that you just want more and more of it,” she proffers. “Fiona is massively playful and gets so much enjoyment out of it, which is wonderful to watch. There was a scene on the beach where she’s letting rip and it was so impressive that we all forgot to respond and say our lines!”

We’ve asked Grace the “How are you, Hun?” question, but how are the other Garveys getting on?

“Eva has made peace with a lot of the stuff that was fucking with her in Season 1,” Sharon proffers. “She’s dealing with physical stuff like the menopause and has given up drinking. She’s happy on her own, which I thought was a good thing to put on screen.

“She’s still the matriarch looking after the sisters – Ursula has half-moved in because she’s split up with Donal – and has her flock around her. As with Grace, though, that contentment doesn’t last long.”

    Bibi’s turn…

“She’s less rageful because John Paul is no longer around,” says the Cork thesp who plays her, Sarah Greene. “While Ursula and Grace aren’t really coping with that, Bibi doesn’t give him a second thought until the cops start looking at them again. Her biggest thing is transparency. The only way she can protect everybody is if she has all the information. The audience knew that Roger was involved but the sisters didn’t, so it’s a huge thing for Bibi to learn that Grace has kept a secret and the cracks begin to show.

“Along with all of that we get to see more of her beautiful marriage to Nora. They’re going through IVF and trying for a second baby, so you’ve the struggles and emotions that go with that.”

    How’s Ursula doing?

“Not great,” Eva Birthistle admits. “The two years have taken quite a toll on her but she’s not verbalising that. In Ursula fashion, she’s trying to patch things up and keep all the plates spinning at work. She’s broken up with Donal, so there’s a major life change in that respect. She’s not really coping and having to self-medicate to get through. It doesn’t take much for it all to unravel.”

Sadly, the baby of the family, Becka, can’t be with us today because Eve Hewson is in the States shooting an as-yet-untiled Noah Baumbach film with George Clooney, Adam Sandler, Laura Dern, Billy Crudup, Jim Broadbent and Isla Fisher. We’re pleased to report, though, that her Bad Sisters character is as delightfully scatty, endearing and annoying as ever.

Asked to describe the atmosphere when everybody reconvened for Season 2, Dearbhla Walsh shoots back: “Like a school reunion that you want to go to! The producer and I specifically scheduled that the first scene on the first day would be all five sisters back on set. It’s the one where they find out about Roger, which causes serious shockwaves.

“Part of my approach to the series is that you experience the dynamic of all five of them. They interact with each other so brilliantly. When Thaddea Graham, who’s one of the new kids on the block in this series, did her first scene she was met with this wall of sisters, which she found so intimidating.

“I told her, ‘The girls are all mad about you’ and she was like, ‘Yeah, I know, but standing in front of them is scary!’ It took Thaddea a while to get used to this force of energy.”

I’d like to shake the hand of the Apple TV+ executive who said, “Fuck this releasing it all in one go malarkey, we’re going to ration Bad Sisters fans to one episode a week.”

“It’s absolutely brilliant that you’re forced to wait and, instead of inhaling it all in one go, let it sit with you,” says Dearbhla Walsh. “Apple paid attention to the fact that family and friends would get together and watch it on Friday night before the Late Late or Graham Norton. If somebody wasn’t there you’d have to wait.”

“There’s such a whodunnit element to the show that it’s good to eek it out and tease people,” Anne-Marie pitches in.

“I haven’t seen any of the new series,” Sarah reveals. “They sent me five episodes but I was like, ‘No, I’m so proud of this I want to watch it week-to-week.’”

Not to be outdone by Eve Hewson, Sarah will soon be seen starring alongside Matt Smith, Robert Glenister and Lindsey Duncan in Sky’s six-part adaptation of Nick Cave’s The Death Of Bunny Munro novel. Did she get to meet the great man?

“He came to set on my birthday but I didn’t want to go down and hound him because he was already getting a lot of that. I spoke to him on the phone, though, and met his beautiful wife, Susie, who designed the dresses I wear in it. Nick’s doing all the music for the series so, yeah, it’s going to be great.”

Like Father Ted, Derry Girls and The Young Offenders before it, Bad Sisters revels in its Irishness and doesn’t feel a need to explain itself to overseas viewers.

“You have to stick to your guns a little bit,” Sharon reflects. “Often the more specific you make something, the more it travels. If it’s too general and homogenised it loses something. I love watching Scandi stuff which has nothing to do with my life whatsoever. It’s pure escapism.

“People do worry about whether the accents will be fully understood and if the jokes will travel but as with Catastrophe, there were always going to be references in there that maybe Americans don’t get but, you know, look it up!”

The aforementioned Derry Girls’ fan club includes Martin Scorsese who left series creator Lisa McGee dumbstruck when he tweeted his approval. Is Sharon aware of Bad Sisters having Hollywood admirers?

“Meryl Streep declared herself a fan, Steven Spielberg as well,” she beams. “We’ve had some incredibly impressive people say they love the show. I’m always pinching myself. It’s just great that it’s out there and still being discovered. I love that Apple focused on the first season again in the run up to the second series going out because we’ll likely get a whole new audience.”

Saying their ‘goodbyes’ at the end of series one, Sharon and her fellow Bad Sisters had no idea whether or not there’d be a second season. Did she write one regardless?

“No, I’m way too much of a scaredy cat to have done that,” Sharon smiles. “I actually needed assurance that if I didn’t come up with something, the onus wasn’t on us to make it. I had the idea for one of the new storylines while we were shooting the first season, but it was when Apple eventually asked for more that we decided to do a writers’ room and other stuff started coming out.”

As raucously funny as it is – scenes routinely have to be reshot because of cast members corpsing, Horgan being the worst offender – Bad Sisters Season 1’s dominant theme was the horrific abuse John Paul subjected Grace and Eva to. Those scenes can’t have been easy to shoot.

“Yeah, it was hard,” Anne-Marie nods. “It was a real acting challenge to play someone who is a ghost of a person. It was a nine month shoot, so I had to hang on to that for a long old time. There’s a sense of osmosis about it – bits of the character do leak into you. You can’t help but carry it a wee bit.

“I got emails from people I’d met somewhere saying, ‘Hi Anne-Marie, I don’t know if you remember me but I wanted to tell you my mum’s story’. It wasn’t just women – I had a lot of men come up to me on the street and talk about their friends’ behaviour. You never ever know the ripple effect of what you do. It can be very, very potent.

“We addressed a lot of things, including rape, in Season 1 of this drama/comedy which hopefully started conversations.”

In an inspired bit of scheduling, Apple TV+ has decided to drop the Bad Sisters Season 2 finale on Christmas Day, which takes care of what to watch after the President’s speech.

“I know, what a turn up for the books?” a delighted Sharon Horgan concludes. “I hadn’t expected that at all. It’s a lot of pressure though! I come from a generation when your Christmas Day viewing was everything and you’d go through the TV Times circling programmes with a biro. It’s a bit like being at Glastonbury and going, ‘Which bands on what stage am I going to catch?’ There’s going to be so much good stuff on, I hope we manage to stand out from the crowd.”

Take it from me, they will!

Season 2 of Bad Sisters is out now on Apple TV+.

The Bad Sisters have taken the music world by storm with their unique blend of indie pop and rock. With their catchy melodies and powerful lyrics, the band has quickly gained a dedicated following. But what sets them apart from other up-and-coming artists is the high praise they have received from some of the biggest names in Hollywood.

In a recent interview, Meryl Streep declared herself a fan of the Bad Sisters, praising their talent and originality. “I was blown away by their music,” Streep said. “They have a sound that is truly their own, and I can’t wait to see where their career takes them.”

Steven Spielberg also had high praise for the band, calling them “a breath of fresh air in the music industry.” Spielberg added, “Their songs are so raw and honest, and their performances are electrifying. I have no doubt that they are destined for greatness.”

The Bad Sisters themselves are humbled by the support they have received from these Hollywood heavyweights. “It’s surreal to think that two icons like Meryl Streep and Steven Spielberg are fans of our music,” said lead singer Emma. “We are so grateful for their support and encouragement.”

With their debut album set to be released next year, the Bad Sisters are poised for even greater success. Keep an eye out for this talented band – they are sure to make waves in the music industry.
