Watch: Barcelona fans reminded me of Messi as Lamine Yamal dribbles past half the Alaves defence
In light of Lamine Yamal’s brilliant performances throughout 2024, the winger is now widely regarded as the next big thing coming out of Barcelona after Lionel Messi.
In fact, comparisons with Messi have only increased as the forward develops his game and becomes even more influential in the Barcelona frontline.
Yamal’s ‘Messi’ moment against Alaves
In the ongoing game against Alaves, Yamal once again reminded Barcelona fans why he is regarded as the ‘next Messi’ by fans and experts alike.
In the early stages of the game, the forward was seen picking up the ball midway through the pitch and starting dribbling across Alaves’ second line of press.
During his run, Yamal was able to sidestep multiple Alaves defenders in his wake, with some of them even getting beaten twice.
This little manoeuvre served as a reminder for Barcelona fans as to why Yamal is regarded as such a special talent.
At the end of the move, after dribbling past at least five or six players, Yamal had the vision to go across the middle of the final third and provide a lofted ball out wide to Raphinha, who was free.
Although Yamal’s sensational run and a key pass forward did not lead to a goal for Barcelona, it was indicator of the youngster’s potential and how he is similar to Yamal in terms of his ability to dribble past players at ease.
As a football fan, I always love watching talented players display their skills on the field. Recently, I came across a video of Lamine Yamal, a young player for Barcelona’s youth team, pulling off an incredible dribbling move against Alaves.
Watching Yamal effortlessly glide past half of Alaves’ defence reminded me of watching Lionel Messi in his prime. The way he used his quick feet and close control to leave defenders in his wake was a joy to behold. It’s moments like these that make football such a beautiful game.
It’s exciting to see young talents like Yamal coming through the ranks at Barcelona, and I can’t wait to see more of what he has to offer in the future. If he continues to develop his skills and maintain his composure on the ball, he could very well follow in the footsteps of the legendary Messi.
For now, I’ll continue to enjoy watching players like Yamal showcase their talents and remind me of the magic that players like Messi bring to the game. It’s moments like these that make being a football fan so special.
THE CHAMPIONSHIP aspirations of the Tasmania JackJumpers will be on the line when they take on the ladder-leading Illawarra Hawks at WIN Entertainment Centre in tonight’s National Basketball League (NBL) action.
The JackJumpers currently sit outside the top six, putting their title defence is in serious doubt, with their quest to even make the postseason proving much more difficult as time has gone on. Now, the one-time champs come up against the best team in it this season, and will need to pull off a serious upset without some key cogs.
Tasmania JackJumpers vs. Illawarra Hawks
Thursday, January 30 @7:30pm MyState Bank Arena
THE TEAMS
The JackJumpers looked back in form this time six weeks ago, before injuries to Will Magnay and Sean Macdonald halted their string of wins. Since the start of January, Tasmania has not looked like the same team that looked a genuine threat to the ultimate prize, and has since slid out of the top six, with the Adelaide 36ers taking that spot and looking extremely likely to steal the JackJumpers’ position in the play-in, so a win tonight is essential.
The Hawks have been the best team in it all season long, and are storming towards a home semi-final in the coming weeks. They sit atop the standings with 17 wins and nine losses to their name, but Melbourne United are hot on their heels, and could steal top position in the final fortnight. In worrying signs in recent weeks, the Hawks have fallen to the 10th-placed Cairns Taipans, so they are gettable for lower-ranked sides, but their best is still too good for their nine opponents.
LAST TIME THEY MET
These two sides clashed just three weeks ago, with the Hawks emerging five-point winners in a thrilling contest at WIN Entertainment Centre. The home side dominated the first half, leading by 13 at the main change, before the JackJumpers made a game of it with an 18-7 run, but Illawarra simply had too many contributors down the stretch and ended its two-game losing streak.
KEY PLAYERS
There are few players more important to their side than Milton Doyle is to Tasmania, but the guard is not having his best season. The import has the capability to tear matches apart with his shotmaking, particularly in isolation and off the dribble, but efficiency has been a real issue. If he can find his groove early and go for 25+ points in this clash, it will provide a huge boost to Tassie’s chances.
One of the biggest strengths for the Hawks this season has been the lift in form by big man Sam Froling, who is enjoying a career-best campaign. Having played in the NBL for five and a half years, he is now starting to tap into his potential after stagnating over the past couple of seasons. When he is in form, his effectiveness in pick and rolls make him a dangerous prospect on the offensive end, and with Tasmania struggling for size, it is the perfect opportunity for the forward to make a mark.
The Hobart JackJumpers may have clinched the championship last season, but the Illawarra Hawks are determined to dethrone the reigning champions. With a revamped roster and a renewed sense of purpose, the Hawks are looking to put an end to the JackJumpers’ title defence.
Led by star guard Tyler Harvey and new additions like Duop Reath and Justin Simon, the Hawks have shown they have the talent and depth to compete at the highest level. Their fast-paced, high-scoring style of play has made them a formidable force in the league.
On the other hand, the JackJumpers are not going down without a fight. With reigning MVP Josh Adams leading the charge, they have proven time and time again that they are a force to be reckoned with. Their experience and chemistry as a team give them a significant advantage heading into the new season.
As the two teams prepare to face off in what promises to be an intense battle, basketball fans can expect nothing less than a thrilling showdown between these two powerhouse teams. Will the Hawks be able to put an end to the JackJumpers’ title defence, or will the reigning champions prove once again why they are the best in the league? Only time will tell. Stay tuned for what is sure to be an exciting season ahead.

One of the biggest games of the Championship season will kick-off at Turf Moor on Monday night, live on Sky Sports.
Burnley and Leeds were among the favourites to win promotion back to the Premier League before a ball was kicked this season and both have lived up to that billing.
Daniel Farke’s Leeds currently lead the Championship with 59 points, one point ahead of second-placed Sheffield Utd and three ahead of Monday’s opposition, Burnley.
Monday 27th January 7:00pm
Kick off 8:00pm
Burnley have won six points fewer than at the same stage of their last Championship season in 2022/23 when they were promoted as champions with 101 points.
While they may be disappointed at this stage to not occupy one of the two automatic promotions spots, this campaign has so far been a successful one at that is mostly down to their defence.

Burnley backline proving impossible to break down
The Clarets have conceded just nine goals in their 28 league games this season – the joint-fewest ever by any team at this stage of an English Football League season. The only team to match this feat was Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea side of 2004-05, who went on to win the Premier League title, conceding a joint-English League record-low 15 goals.

If Burnley continue conceding goals at this sparse rate of 0.32 per game, they would concede between 14 or 15 goals by the end of the season so could potentially beat that record set by Mourinho’s Chelsea in 2004-05 and Preston way back in the first ever league season in 1888-89.
Those were both set in seasons with less than 46 games. The lowest number of goals conceded in a 46-game season was 20 by Gillingham in Division 3 in 1995-96. To beat that record Scott Parker’s team have to concede less than 11 goals over their remaining 18 fixtures.
Burnley’s defence has clearly not been giving away anything this season, having not made an error leading to a single goal as of yet.
Burnley’s defensive numbers are made more impressive given they do let the opposition have chances. Parker’s team have faced 264 shots in the League this season – 24 teams have faced fewer in the top 4 tiers in 2024/25 with Leeds, interestingly, facing the fewest (180).

However, 61 of the 70 shots on target Burnley have faced this season have been saved, giving the Clarets the best save ratio in the top 4 tiers in 2024-25 (87.1 per cent).
Unsurprisingly, Burnley come out on top across the top four tiers in English football for a number of defensive metrics with more clean sheets (19) and a better xG against (-14.48) than any other side.
Comparing Burnley’s defensive numbers to teams in Europe’s major Leagues, the Clarets achievements still stand up. Atletico Madrid have conceded the fewest goals across the major Leagues this season with 14 in 21 matches – five goals more than Burnley in seven fewer games.
League-leading Leeds will try and burst through Claret wall
Up against the country’s best defence on Monday night is statistically its best attack.
Whilst the stats above do show Leeds have performed well defensively this season, it is in attack where they have really shone.
Daniel Farke’s side have scored 53 goals this season – the most by any team in England’s top four tiers and six more than any other Championship team.
Image: Leeds have scored the most goals in the Championship
Ahead of this weekend’s action, Leeds have also had the more shots (463) and shots on target (160) than any other team in senior English League football.
Again comparing from Europe’s major leagues, only Bayern Munich (58) have scored more League goals this season than Leeds.
And Leeds have had more shot and shots on target than any team from those Leagues this season.
When Leeds last won promotion from the Championship as title winners in 2019/20, Marcelo Bielsa’s team had seven points fewer at this stage than Farke’s side this season and had also scored 10 goals fewer.
Everything bodes well for Leeds’ efforts to gain promotion back to the Premier League after two seasons in the second tier. But if they are to increase the three-point gap on Burnley on Monday night, they will have to find a way to breach a defence only nine teams have managed to find a way past this season.
In one corner, we have Burnley with their record-breaking defence, having conceded just 39 goals in 38 Premier League matches last season. In the other corner, we have Leeds with their ruthless attack, scoring 62 goals in the same number of matches.
It’s a clash of styles as Burnley’s resolute backline led by the likes of James Tarkowski and Ben Mee look to shut down Leeds’ dynamic attacking trio of Patrick Bamford, Jack Harrison, and Raphinha. Can Burnley’s defence stand strong against Leeds’ relentless pressure and creativity? Or will Leeds’ attacking prowess prove too much for Burnley to handle?
With both teams looking to make a statement early in the season, this match promises to be a thrilling encounter. Who will come out on top in this battle between defence and attack? Stay tuned to find out.

Israel’s defence minister said on Friday he is immediately freeing Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank who are being held in so-called “administrative detention.”
The warrants issued for all of them will be lifted, Defence Minister Israel Katz said. The measure does not apply to Palestinians, who are vastly more affected by the controversial practice.
Katz said he was freeing the settlers because of the ceasefire and hostage deal reached with Hamas militants in Gaza. That agreement also foresees the release of hundreds of Palestinians in Israeli jails, most of whom will return to the West Bank – but the ceasefire has yet to be formally approved by the Israeli government or put into effect.
Katz said Jewish settlers are on the “front line in the fight against Palestinian terrorism,” and so his decision to free them is meant to send “a clear message of strength and encouragement.”
He did not mention the increasing settler violence against Palestinian residents of the West Bank.
Administrative detention involves holding suspects for six months or even longer. This is the case if the people concerned are linked to a crime, for example, but there is not enough evidence to bring charges or go to trial.
Rights groups say detainees are held on the presumption that they could commit an offence at some point in the future, and that children and activists can languish behind bars for long periods.
Katz had already decided at the end of November 2024 to abolish the practice for Israeli settlers, but not for Palestinians. Administrative detention is a feature of the West Bank, but does not apply inside Israel.
Internationally, most states view Israeli settlements as illegal under international law and an obstacle to peace in the region.
In a surprising move, Israeli Defence Minister, Benny Gantz, has announced that he will be releasing a group of Israeli settlers who were being held in administrative detention. This decision comes after months of pressure from right-wing politicians and settler groups who have been advocating for the release of the detainees.
The settlers, who were detained for their involvement in violent attacks against Palestinians, were originally held under Israel’s controversial administrative detention policy, which allows for indefinite detention without trial. Many human rights organizations and international bodies have criticized this policy as a violation of due process and human rights.
Gantz’s decision to release the settlers has sparked controversy and debate within Israel, with some praising it as a step towards reconciliation and others condemning it as a capitulation to settler pressure. The Defence Minister has defended his decision, stating that it is in the best interest of Israel’s security and stability.
It remains to be seen how this decision will impact the ongoing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, and whether it will lead to further tensions or a potential breakthrough in peace negotiations. Only time will tell.
French aircraft have bombed Islamic State positions in Syria, the country’s defence minister Sebastien Lecornu has announced.
The strikes are the first on Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad.
“Our armed forces remain engaged in battling terrorism in the Levant,” Lecornu posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, while on a New Year visit to French UN peacekeepers in Lebanon.
“On Sunday, French air assets carried out targeted strikes against Daesh on Syrian soil,” he added, using the Arabic name for IS.
The defence ministry told AFP that France’s Rafale fighter jets and US-made Reaper drones “dropped a total of seven bombs on two military targets belonging to Daesh in central Syria”.
France has belonged to the Inherent Resolve international coalition against IS since 2014 for Iraq and 2015 for Syria.
French troops involved in the operations are based in the region, including in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
As Assad’s fall to a shock offensive by Syrian rebels led by a radical Sunni group rapidly reshapes the country, observers fear space could be left for IS to regather its strength.
The group has survived in both Iraq and Syria despite the destruction of its so-called caliphate that lasted from 2014-19.
Washington said in mid-December that it had doubled American troop numbers fighting jihadists in Syria, to about 2,000.
Its Central Command – responsible for the Middle East – said it wanted to ensure that IS “does not seek to take advantage of the current situation to reconstitute in central Syria”.
Key events
Summary
As the time approaches 3pm in Tel Aviv, Israel, here’s a roundup of today’s news in the Middle East.
A UN report has said Israel’s attacks on hospitals in and around Gaza have led the area’s healthcare system to the brink of “total collapse”. The UN Human Rights Office says its report raises concerns about how much Israel is complying with international law.
Meanwhile The head of Unrwa – the UN agency for aid in Gaza – Philippe Lazzarini says “horrors continue unabated” 15 months since the war broke out between Israel and Gaza, triggered by the Hamas terror attack.
More than 250 members of United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine (Unrwa) had been killed since the start of the conflict, and more than two-thirds of Unrwa buildings have been damaged or destroyed, he said.
The president of the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, Ola Awad, said the Gaza Strip’s economy crumbled this year during the continued Israeli operations in the territory.
Palestinian news agency Wafa reported: “By the end of 2024, estimates indicate that the unprecedented sharp contraction in the GDP in the Gaza Strip will continue by more than 82%, accompanied by an increase in the unemployment rate to 80%.”
The Palestinian Civil Defence agency said it has received hundreds of distress calls from displaced people whose tents and shelters have been flooded by rainwater after heavy rain.
Palestinian health authorities say 45 people have been evacuated from the Gaza Strip for general hospital treatment in the United Arab Emirates. They include a 10-year-old boy suffering from kidney failure.
French aircraft have bombed Islamic State positions in Syria, the country’s defence minister Sebastien Lecornu has announced. The strikes are the first on Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad.
Syria’s new rulers have confirmed the appointment of Murhaf Abu Qasra as defence minister in the new interim government, according to a statement released on Tuesday.
The new Syrian government has reportedly appointed former foreign fighters to its armed forces, Reuters has reported.
The new figures include Uyghurs, a Jordanian and a Turk as Damascus tries to shape a patchwork of rebel groups into a professional military, two Syrian sources told the news agency.
Israel has warned Yemen’sHouthi rebels that they face the same “miserable fate” as Hamas and Hezbollah if they continue with rocket attacks.
Gaza’s healthcare system on brink of ‘total collapse’, says UN report
A UN report has said Israel’s attacks on hospitals in and around Gaza have led the area’s healthcare system to the brink of “total collapse”.
The report by the UN Human Rights Office, titled Attacks on hospitals during the escalation of hostilities in Gaza, examines attacks between October 2023 and June 2024 and said successive attacks raise “serious concerns” about the extent to which Israel is complying with international law.
It says there had been 136 strikes on 27 hospitals and 12 other medical facilities, leading to “significant” casualties among doctors, nurses, medics and other civilians.
It warns that under international law, the “deliberate” destruction of healthcare facilities may constitute a war crime.
The UN high commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said it had led to hospitals becoming a “death trap”.
He said: “As if the relentless bombing and the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza were not enough, the one sanctuary where Palestinians should have felt safe in fact became a death trap. The protection of hospitals during warfare is paramount and must be respected by all sides, at all times.
“This report graphically details the destruction of the healthcare system in Gaza, and the extent of killing of patients, staff, and other civilians in these attacks in blatant disregard for international humanitarian and human rights law.”
France bombs Islamic State targets in Syria
French aircraft have bombed Islamic State positions in Syria, the country’s defence minister Sebastien Lecornu has announced.
The strikes are the first on Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad.
“Our armed forces remain engaged in battling terrorism in the Levant,” Lecornu posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, while on a New Year visit to French UN peacekeepers in Lebanon.

Its Central Command – responsible for the Middle East – said it wanted to ensure that IS “does not seek to take advantage of the current situation to reconstitute in central Syria”.
Gaza Strip’s economy collapsed in 2024 amid Israeli bombardment, says Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics
The president of the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, Ola Awad, said the Gaza Strip’s economy crumbled this year during the continued Israeli operations in the territory.
According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, Awad said there had also been a sharp decline in the productivity in the West Bank.
Wafa reported: “By the end of 2024, estimates indicate that the unprecedented sharp contraction in the GDP in the Gaza Strip will continue by more than 82%, accompanied by an increase in the unemployment rate to 80%.”
The West Bank’s economy shrunk by more than 19%, with unemployment now standing at more than 35%.
Among the sectors affected were external trade, construction and industry.
Palestinian health authorities say 45 people have been evacuated from the Gaza Strip for hospital treatment in the United Arab Emirates.
They left the European hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis early on Tuesday, Associated Press reports, and travelled through the Kerem Shalom Crossing into Israel.
The patients are accompanied by over 100 of their relatives, according to the hospital.
Among them was a 10-year-old boy, Abdullah Abu Yousef, suffering from kidney failure. The child was accompanied by his sister after the Israeli authorities rejected his mother’s application to join him. Israel says it screens escorts for security.
“The boy is sick,” said his mother, Abeer Abu Yousef. “He requires hemodialysis three to four days a week.”
The Health Ministry says several thousand Palestinians in Gaza need medical treatment abroad.
Israel has controlled all entry and exit points since capturing the southern city of Rafah in May.
Israel’s offensive, launched after Hamas’ attack in October 2023 has gutted the territory’s health care system and forced most of its hospitals to close.
Those that remain open are only partially functioning.
Syria’s new rulers have confirmed the appointment of Murhaf Abu Qasra as defence minister in the new interim government, according to a statement released on Tuesday.
Reuters had initially reported the appointment of Abu Qasra, a leading figure in the insurgency which toppled Bashar al-Assad, on 21 December after speaking to an official source.
‘Horrors continue unabated’ in Gaza 15 months after conflict started, says head of Unrwa
The head of the UN aid agency for Gaza said “horrors continue unabated” 15 months since the war broke out between Israel and Gaza, triggered by the Hamas terror attack.
Philippe Lazzarini said more than 250 members of United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine (Unrwa) had been killed since the start of the conflict, and that more than two-thirds of Unrwa buildings have been damaged or destroyed.
Lazzarini, in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, said at least 20 Unrwa staff are in Israeli prisons. Those who have been released have reported “mistreatment, humiliation and torture”, he said.
He added: “I reiterate my call for independent investigations into the systematic disregard for the protection of humanitarian workers, premises and operations. This cannot become the new standard and impunity cannot become the new norm.”
He called for the release of all detained humanitarian staff, and hostages, and for Israel to facilitate humanitarian access and lift the “siege” on Gaza.
The Palestinian Civil Defence agency said it has received hundreds of distress calls from displaced people whose tents and shelters have been flooded by rainwater after heavy rain.
“Our crews can only evacuate citizens from their damaged shelters to other places that are mostly unsuitable to shelter, and they remain in the open – under the rain and bitter cold,” it said on Telegram, Al Jazeera reports.
“We appeal to people of conscience to rush to save these families and help them move to suitable shelters that protect them from rainwater,” it added.
The statement added that displaced people in the refugee camps in central Gaza City, al-Mawasi, Khan Younis, Rafah and western Deir el-Balah, in particular, need help.
UN agencies estimate that some 1.6 million people in Gaza are living in makeshift shelters that do not protect them from the cold of winter, with nearly half a million in flood-prone areas.
On Monday Reuters reported a baby had died in a tent amid freezing temperatures and heavy rain. His brother was being treated in intensive care.
The move to give official roles, including senior ones, to jihadists may alarm some foreign governments and Syrian citizens fearful about the new Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) administration’s intentions, despite its pledges not to export Islamic revolution and to rule with tolerance towards Syria’s large minority groups.
Syria’s new rulers, drawn mainly from HTS, have indicated that foreign fighters and their families may be given Syrian citizenship and be allowed to stay in the country because of their contributions to the fight against Assad.
A Syrian government spokesperson did not reply to a request for comment on the thinking behind the appointments.
The sources said that out of a total of almost 50 military roles announced by the Defence Ministry on Sunday, at least six had gone to foreigners.
Reuters and the Guardian have not been able to independently verify the nationalities of the individuals appointed.
Ahmed al-Sharaa, the HTS-leader-turned de facto ruler of Syria, has purged dozens of foreign jihadi fighters as part of a campaign to Syrianise and moderate his group.
In remarks broadcast on Sunday, Sharaa said the new Syria “cannot be run by the mentality of groups and militias”
Israeli ambassador to the UN tells Houthis ‘Israel will defend its people’ after recent attacks
Israel has warned Yemen’sHouthi rebels that they face the same “miserable fate” as Hamas and Hezbollah if they continue with rocket attacks.
Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, said the Iran-backed group would be targeted by Israeli military after recent attacks by the Houthis on Israel.
Hours after the warning by Danon, Israel’s military said it had intercepted a missile fired from Yemen, as air raid alarms were sounded.
The Houthis targeted Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv and a power station south of Jerusalem using a hypersonic ballistic missile and a Zulfiqar ballistic missile, respectively, the group’s military spokesperson Yahya Saree said.
Danon told the United Nations: “To the Houthis, perhaps you have not been paying attention to what has happened to the Middle East over the past year.
“Well, allow me to remind you what has happened to Hamas, to Hezbollah, to Assad, to all those who have attempted to destroy us. Let this be your final warning. This is not a threat. It is a promise. You will share the same miserable fate,” Danon said.
Before the meeting, Danon told reporters: “Israel will defend its people. If 2,000 kilometres is not enough to separate our children from the terror, let me assure you, it will not be enough to protect their terror from our strengths.”
On Tuesday, France carried out a bombing raid on Islamic State targets in Syria, according to the country’s defense minister. The operation was part of ongoing efforts to combat the terrorist group and its activities in the region.
The French defense minister confirmed the airstrikes in a statement, saying that the targets were successfully hit and destroyed. The operation was carried out in coordination with international partners and in accordance with international law.
This latest attack comes as part of France’s continued commitment to fighting terrorism and ensuring the safety and security of its citizens. The country has been actively involved in the fight against Islamic State in Syria and Iraq for several years, working alongside other countries in the region.
The French government has reiterated its determination to eliminate the threat posed by Islamic State and other terrorist organizations, both at home and abroad. The airstrikes in Syria are just one example of the country’s efforts to combat extremism and protect its citizens from harm.
As the situation continues to develop, it is important for all countries to remain vigilant and united in the fight against terrorism. The international community must work together to address the root causes of extremism and prevent further attacks from occurring. France’s latest bombing raid is a clear indication of the country’s commitment to this important cause.

It’s a special feeling to return to a tournament as defending champion – as Grigor Dimitrov, who has twice lifted the Roy Emerson Trophy at Pat Rafter Arena, well knows.
“You know, I’ve done it once and I’m doing it for the second time,” he smiled as he prepared to launch the defence of his Brisbane 2024 title. “I think it’s wonderful. Honestly, it’s wonderful. I think every time I step out here it just feels like I’ve been here yesterday.”
That familiarity is another happy feeling for the 33-year-old, whose 23 match wins are the most that any ATP player has amassed in the city. Also saluting at Brisbane in 2017, Dimitrov joins Andy Murray as the tournament’s only multiple men’s champions.
It underlines the longevity that has become another defining feature of Dimitrov’s career. While making an eighth appearance at the Brisbane International, he is launching a 15th consecutive season in Australia. “Wow, 15? That’s cool,” he smiled when informed of the lofty number.
Endurance is helped in part by Dimitrov’s ongoing passion for the sport, which he first took up with his coaching father, Dimitar, in his Bulgarian hometown of Haskovo as a three-year-old. “I love competing, I love preparing for a tournament. I like that excitement, I like that adrenaline,” he explained.
Armed with that positive approach and a notable work ethic, Dimitrov has won nine singles titles and been a semifinalist at three of the four Grand Slams. He maintained a top-10 ranking in 2024 after contesting the Marseille, Miami, and Stockholm finals and reaching the Roland Garros and US Open quarterfinals.
“It was a great season but despite all that I still felt like was quite a bit of up and down at some moments,” said Dimitrov, with some niggling physical issues requiring some tweaks to his training schedule.
“I really had to find a different way to work through, I would say throughout the whole year, and especially in the off-season as well.
“I still feel I’m in that process of figuring some things out. But again, other than that I’m very, honestly I’m very grateful that I was able to produce some great tennis.”
Dimitrov, the No.2 seed in Brisbane this year, does so with the support of many fans and tourmates. The popular competitor was selected by fellow players as the winner of the 2024 Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award. “I feel very fortunate,” said a grateful Dimitrov. “I’ll make sure I keep on going and to keep striving to be the best.”
That’s delightful news for the scores of fans who appreciate the Bulgarian’s elegant athleticism and fluent tennis, incorporating an increasingly rare single-handed backhand.
“It’s going to become rarer and rarer,” he conceded of his trademark stroke. “Of course it saddens me, I’m not going to lie … but you know, the game evolves. So does life in so many different ways.”
For now, however, Dimitrov seems likely to keep his classical style firmly in the spotlight as he focuses on maintaining the form that has delivered many rewards in Brisbane.
“Another year is upon us and another season,” he reasoned ahead of his first-round Brisbane meeting with qualifier Yannick Hoffman.
“I’m going to try to remain positive and try to impose myself even more for next year.”
Grigor Dimitrov, the Bulgarian tennis star, is set to defend his Brisbane International title with an enduring passion for the sport driving his efforts on the court. Dimitrov, who claimed his first ATP title at the Brisbane International last year, is eager to prove himself once again as he kicks off the new season.
Known for his elegant playing style and powerful shots, Dimitrov has established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the tennis world. His dedication to the sport and relentless work ethic have fueled his success on the court, and he is determined to continue his winning ways in Brisbane.
Despite facing tough competition from other top players, Dimitrov remains focused and determined to come out on top. His passion for the game is evident in every match he plays, and fans can expect to see him give it his all as he defends his title in Brisbane.
As Dimitrov takes to the court in Brisbane, his enduring passion for tennis will drive him to give his best and fight for victory. With his skill, determination, and unwavering commitment to the sport, there is no doubt that he will put up a strong defence of his title and leave a lasting impression on fans and opponents alike.

The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence in Defence by Mariarosaria Taddeo
In her groundbreaking work on the ethics of artificial intelligence in defence, Mariarosaria Taddeo explores the complex moral and ethical implications of using AI technology in military settings. Taddeo argues that the deployment of AI in defence raises a host of ethical concerns, including issues of accountability, transparency, and fairness.
One of the key concerns Taddeo raises is the potential for AI systems to make decisions that have life-and-death consequences without human oversight. This raises serious questions about who should be held responsible for the actions of these systems, and how they can be held accountable for their decisions.
Taddeo also highlights the importance of ensuring that AI systems are transparent and explainable, so that humans can understand how they reach their conclusions and intervene when necessary. Without transparency, there is a risk that AI systems could make biased or discriminatory decisions that harm individuals or communities.
Finally, Taddeo emphasizes the need for fairness in the deployment of AI in defence. She argues that it is crucial to ensure that AI systems do not perpetuate or exacerbate existing inequalities, and that they are used in ways that uphold human rights and international law.
Overall, Taddeo’s work offers a vital contribution to the ongoing debate about the ethics of artificial intelligence in defence. By examining the ethical challenges posed by AI technology in military settings, Taddeo provides valuable insights into how we can ensure that AI is used in ways that are ethical, responsible, and just.

Fight fans who know the Sonny Liston story know the former heavyweight champion of the world had, shall we say, a testy relationship with cops. Liston, who had himself a pretty lousy 1964 – with him shockingly losing the crown to massive, loudmouth underdog Cassius Clay that February – had another bad experience at the hands of the law at the end of the year.
Liston was pulled by the cops in Denver, on Christmas Day no less, this his umpteenth arrest (reports are sketchy, but some say Sonny had the bracelets put on him no less than 19 times during his adult life), and his Christmas was duly ruined. According to reports from the archives, two policemen who were on duty on Christmas Day noticed a man who was, as they called it, “staggering through a parking lot.”
The as yet unknown man got into his Cadillac and drove away, this in “erratic” fashion. The two cops pulled over the car, and upon doing so they recognised the former heavyweight champ. Then things got nasty. A shoving match ensued, and soon TEN cops were on the scene. And they still couldn’t handle Liston. Eventually, Liston reluctantly got into the back of the cop car, with him initially admitting to having had one beer.
The cops say Liston, at the station, changed his story and said he’d had “maybe six to eight beers…..and some tasty liquor.” Liston spent the night in jail. Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, current heavyweight champ Muhammad Ali, who had taken the title from Sonny when still known as Cassius Clay (and was still referred to by his “slave name” by the US media in 1964 and would continue to be so for some years) – came to Sonny’s aid. Ali, after reading about Sonny’s plight, told anyone who would listen that his ring rival had unjustly been made an example of by the cops (again) and that his arrest had been “pitiful.”
Now, if Sonny had downed as many as eight beers, along with some “tasty liquor,” and if he had been unable to walk straight, with him instead “staggering,” how did it take as many as ten cops to deal with him? The Denver cops, who we all know hounded Liston something terrible, couldn’t have made a mountain out of a mole hill, could they?
It seems they sure did.
Poor Sonny, he never was given a break; not by the cops, not by the media, and unfortunately not by most of the media and historians, and it continues to be this way today as far as some historians and so-called experts go. Liston had made a real splash when he posed, quite shockingly, as Santa Clause, this on the December 1963 cover of Esquire Magazine. Now, an ex-champ who nobody, so the story continues to go, wanted when he was the world ruler, was spending his Christmas Day inside an eight by four jail cell.
No wonder Liston found it tough to smile when in the wrong company. And for Sonny, most people were folks he would have described as the wrong company.
Sonny Liston always said that in boxing, there is a good guy and a bad guy, with him adding how his cowboy movie was different, as the bad guy – this a role he had long since grown used to portraying – won. But on Christmas Day 60 years ago, Liston seemed to be as down as could possibly be imagined for a star, world class athlete and former heavyweight king.
In short, during his still so mysterious life, Sonny Liston never ever did seem to get a break. Those rare few who had the good fortune of knowing the real Liston all commented on his intelligence, his great sense of humour, his generosity, and his absolute love of kids. Sonny, as everyone knows, died under murky circumstances some time in either late December of 1970 or early January of 1971. Officially he was 38 years old.
On Christmas Day in 1964, the boxing world was shocked when heavyweight champion Sonny Liston was arrested on charges of reckless driving and carrying a concealed weapon. However, what was even more surprising was the unexpected ally who came to his defence – the legendary Muhammad Ali.
Ali, who had recently defeated Liston to become the new heavyweight champion, spoke out in support of his rival, stating that Liston was a good man who had been misunderstood by the media. Despite their fierce competition in the ring, Ali showed compassion and solidarity with Liston in his time of need.
The incident brought attention to the complex relationship between the two fighters, highlighting the respect and camaraderie that can exist even in the midst of intense rivalry. It also served as a reminder that even in the world of sports, compassion and empathy can transcend competition.
As we reflect on this Christmas Day in 1964, let us remember the unexpected bond that was formed between Sonny Liston and Muhammad Ali, and the power of forgiveness and understanding in the face of adversity.
