  • Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Jani Hakanpaa ruled out of 4 Nations with injury

Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Jani Hakanpaa will not participate in the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off for Finland due to injury.

Hakanpaa has skated in just two games for the Maple Leafs this season due to knee issues and has not played since mid-November.

The 32-year-old averaged 14:05 minutes of ice time and had two shots on goal, four blocked shots and one hit during those two contests.

In early December, Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said that Hakanpaa had a “little procedure” done on his knee. Hakanpaa had undergone season-ending knee surgery last March as a member of the Dallas Stars

More woes on blueline for Finland

Finland will need to add two replacements to its roster with Stars defenceman Miro Heiskanen, who was injured on Tuesday night against the Vegas Golden Knights, also ruled out as he is week to week with a lower-body injury.

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun wrote in The Athletic on Friday that while Heiskanen is off to see a specialist in New York on Monday for his lower-body injury, Stars general manager Jim Nill told LeBrun the team feels there’s a good chance the defenceman returns before the start of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

“We’re pretty optimistic,” Nill said Friday. “He had an MRI done, he saw our team doctor, he’s going to go see a specialist in New York on Monday. And we’ll get a better feel for things.”

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ defenceman Jani Hakanpaa has been ruled out of the upcoming 4 Nations tournament due to injury. Hakanpaa, who was set to represent Finland in the international competition, suffered the injury during a recent game with the Maple Leafs. The team has not disclosed the specific nature of Hakanpaa’s injury or the expected timeline for his return to play. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the ice soon.

  • New York Islanders claim defenceman Adam Boqvist off waivers from Florida Panthers

The New York Islanders claimed defenceman Adam Boqvist off waivers from the Florida Panthers on Friday.

The 24-year-old has two goals and four points in 18 games this season while averaging 12:51 of ice time. He has not played an NHL game since Jan. 6.

Drafted eighth overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2018, Boqvist was dealt to the Columbus Blue Jackets in July of 2021, where he would play five seasons before signing with the Panthers in the off-season on a one-year, $775,000 deal.

Isles continue to add on defence

With the Boqvist claim, this is New York’s third notable move to address their blueline in the past week.

On Jan. 24, the team signed Tony DeAngelo for the remainder of the 2024-25 season. The 29-year-old hasn’t played in the NHL this season, but had six goals with 26 assists in 34 games with the KHL’s St. Petersburg SKA.

DeAngelo appeared in 31 games with the Carolina Hurricanes last season, recording three goals and eight assists. He added two assists in nine playoff games.

On Monday, the Islanders acquired Scott Perunovich from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for a 2026 conditional fifth-round pick.

The 26-year-old had two goals and six points in 24 games with the Blues this season while averaging 14:37 of ice time.

The 5-foot-10 left-shot defenceman signed a one-year, $1.15 million with the Blues in the off-season and is a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

The New York Islanders have added some defensive depth to their roster by claiming defenceman Adam Boqvist off waivers from the Florida Panthers. Boqvist, a former first round draft pick, brings skill and potential to the Islanders’ blue line.

With injuries plaguing the Islanders’ defensive corps, Boqvist’s arrival couldn’t have come at a better time. The 21-year-old Swede has shown flashes of brilliance in his young career and will have the opportunity to make an impact with his new team.

Boqvist will join a talented Islanders team that is looking to make a deep playoff run this season. His addition provides some much-needed depth and versatility on the back end, and could prove to be a key acquisition for the team as they push towards the postseason.

Islanders fans can look forward to seeing Boqvist in action as he suits up for his new team in the coming games. With his skill and potential, he could be a valuable asset for the Islanders as they continue their quest for a championship.

  • Islanders sign defenceman Tony DeAngelo to one-year deal

After a short stint in the KHL, Tony DeAngelo is coming back to the NHL.

The 29-year-old defenceman signed a one-year contract for the remainder of the 2024-25 season with the New York Islanders on Friday, the team announced.

Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravelli reported that the deal is for a prorated league minimum of $775,000 and that DeAngelo will have to be placed on waivers Friday because he played in Russia.

Earlier this month, DeAngelo had his contract terminated by SKA Saint Petersburg so he could return home for family reasons. He led the team in assists, with 26, and in scoring among all defencemen with 32 points in just 34 games.

DeAngelo suited up for 371 career NHL games with the Arizona Coyotes, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers and, most recently, the Carolina Hurricanes, before signing a one-year contract to head to Russia at the conclusion of the 2023-24 season.

He has 48 goals and 162 assists during his NHL career.

DeAngelo is a former 19th-overall draft pick by Tampa Bay who gained notoriety for a physical altercation on Jan. 30, 2021, with then-teammate Alexandar Georgiev of the New York Rangers, an incident he elaborated on in August on Morning Cuppa Hockey podcast on Daily Faceoff. The incident prompted the Rangers to place DeAngelo on unconditional waivers and eventually buy him out, despite having played just six games of that season, which had been delayed due to the pandemic.

The New York Islanders have bolstered their defensive corps by signing Tony DeAngelo to a one-year deal. The 25-year-old defenseman brings a wealth of experience and skill to the team, having previously played for the Arizona Coyotes and New York Rangers.

DeAngelo is known for his offensive prowess, as well as his physicality and strong defensive play. He will be a valuable addition to the Islanders’ blue line, providing depth and stability to the team’s defensive unit.

Fans are excited to see DeAngelo in action and are hopeful that he will make a significant impact on the team’s performance this season. With his signing, the Islanders are looking to continue their success and make a deep playoff run.

Stay tuned for more updates on DeAngelo’s performance with the Islanders as the season progresses. Let’s go Islanders! #Isles #TonyDeAngelo #NHLSigning

  • Canadian defenceman Matthew Schaefer injured vs. Latvia at world juniors

Canadian defenceman Matthew Schaefer injured vs. Latvia at world juniors

One of Canada’s top defencemen left the ice after a scary scene on Friday at the world junior championship.

Matthew Schaefer slammed his shoulder into the Latvia net and fell into the boards after he drove to the net and had a shot stopped early in the first period at Canadian Tire Centre. He appeared to be favouring his left arm and immediately went to the locker room.

Hockey Canada ruled him out prior to the second period.

Schaefer, 17, had a goal and an assist in Canada’s 4-0 tournament-opening win over Finland on Thursday.

The second-youngest player on the team, Schaefer is in a projected four-way battle with forwards Porter Martone, James Hagens and Michael Misa to be the top pick at next year’s NHL Draft. Martone (Canada) and Hagens (U.S.) also are playing in the world juniors.

The native of Stoney Creek, Ont. has seven goals and 15 assists for 22 points in 17 games with the OHL’s Erie Otters this season.

The Otters picked Schaefer first overall in the 2023 OHL draft. He missed the first nine games of this season while recovering from mononucleosis.

Canadian defenceman Matthew Schaefer injured vs. Latvia at world juniors

In a heartbreaking turn of events at the IIHF World Junior Championship, Canadian defenceman Matthew Schaefer suffered a serious injury during the game against Latvia.

Schaefer, who has been a key player for Team Canada throughout the tournament, was injured in the second period after a collision with a Latvian player along the boards. He was seen clutching his arm in pain and had to be helped off the ice by medical staff.

The extent of Schaefer’s injury is still unknown, but the team has confirmed that he will not be returning to the game. The loss of Schaefer is a significant blow to Team Canada, as he has been a strong presence on the blue line and a leader on the ice.

Our thoughts are with Matthew Schaefer as he recovers from this injury, and we hope to see him back on the ice soon. In the meantime, Team Canada will have to rally together and continue to push forward in their pursuit of a gold medal at the world juniors.
