Arsenal defender Borussia Dortmund’s top target ahead of Ben Chilwell
Borussia Dortmund have reportedly made Arsenal left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko their ‘top target’ ahead of Chelsea’s outcast vice-captain Ben Chilwell.
Dortmund, who parted ways with manager Nuri Sahin earlier this week but will not appoint Erik ten Hag as his replacement, have been looking to strengthen the left-side of their defence throughout January.
Chilwell’s teammate at Chelsea, Renato Veiga, had been the player Dortmund wanted to sign most, but they were unable to agree terms over a move – the Blues initially willing to only sanction a permanent transfer while Dortmund were seeking a loan. The Portuguese is now set to join Juventus on loan after the former Premier League winners changed their stance.
Zinchenko has fallen behind Riccardo Calafiori and academy graduate Myles Lewis-Skelly in Arsenal‘s defensive pecking order, while Jurrien Timber is also capable of playing on the left and could shift back into the role once usual starting right-back Ben White returns to fitness.
The Telegraph report that Zinchenko is now Dortmund’s favoured option ahead of Chilwell, who has been restricted to just one Carabao Cup appearance for Chelsea this season. West Ham United have also been linked with 28-year-old Chilwell, who Enzo Maresca has made clear can leave Stamford Bridge if a suitable offer comes in.
Dortmund are currently 10th in the Bundesliga after winning just one of their last five league games, but did reach the final of last season’s Champions League. They have also qualified for the play-off round of this season’s reformatted competition and could still secure one of the top-eight berths that grants automatic qualification through to the knockout stages.
Zinchenko has plenty of European experience with both Arsenal and former club Manchester City, whom he left in July 2022 for £30m in search of more regular first-team football. The Ukrainian, who is versatile and can operate in central midfield, won four Premier League titles, four Carabao Cups and one FA Cup during his time under Pep Guardiola, and started the 2021 Champions League final against Chelsea.

Kyle Walker transfer news: Man City defender joins AC Milan on loan with option to buy | Football News
Kyle Walker has left Manchester City and joined AC Milan on an initial six-month loan, with the Serie A club having an option to buy him permanently this summer.
The 34-year-old asked to leave City earlier in January with his last appearance for the club coming in the 4-1 home win over West Ham at the start of the month.
City accepted Milan’s formal loan offer on Thursday. The option to buy in the summer is worth around £4.2m (€5m), according to Sky in Italy.

Walker has helped City win 17 trophies, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League, since joining the club in a £50m deal from Tottenham in 2017.

Walker departs City having made 319 appearances for the club across seven-and-half-seasons at the Etihad Stadium, while he captained the side for last season’s historic fourth consecutive Premier League title.
The England international will wear the number 32 shirt at AC Milan, who sit eighth in Serie A and are on course to finish in the top eight of the Champions League table with Sergio Conceicao’s occupying sixth spot.

By the end of his first season in charge, Pep Guardiola had realised that it would take a massive overhaul of the Manchester City squad to win the trophies he’d been brought in to deliver.
Ten regular first-team players were shown the exit door in the summer of 2017 and a raft of new talent was brought in to pave the way for an era of domestic dominance.
Central to that was the signing of Kyle Walker, who at the time was the most expensive defender in English football history, arriving from Tottenham for a fee worth more than £50m including add-ons.
Guardiola needed more energy from his full-backs to realise his vision, and Walker was seen to be the perfect upgrade on fan-favourite Pablo Zabaleta, who was released at the age of 32.
Eyebrows were raised at the time, but in the seven-and-a-half years since, Walker has repaid that transfer fee many times over.

Mavs Reportedly Seek Impact Perimeter Defender, Make Gafford Available
The Mavericks, who remain on the look for an impact perimeter defender, have dangled center Daniel Gafford in those talks, according to Christian Clark of The Athletic.
Clark first reported at the start of the month that Dallas was exploring the idea of pursuing a player who could upgrade the club’s perimeter defense. He mentioned Pelicans forward Herbert Jones at that time, but acknowledged that New Orleans was unlikely to move him.
Jones is now out indefinitely with a shoulder ailment, but prior to that injury, the Pelicans’ asking price for him was “extraordinarily high,” according to Clark, who doesn’t identify any other specific players the Mavs may be eyeing, noting that the options available on the trade market for a needle-moving impact defender may be limited.
Still, Clark’s suggestion that Dallas is open to making Gafford available is noteworthy. The Mavs gave up a late 2024 first-round pick for the veteran big man at last season’s deadline and he helped the team make a run to the NBA Finals, starting all 21 playoff games in the spring.
As effective as Gafford has been since arriving in Dallas, he’s essentially a backup center, averaging a modest 20.0 minutes per game this season as he has taken a back seat to rising second-year big man Dereck Lively. Gafford is contributing 11.7 points and 6.0 rebounds per night, with a .706 FG%. The Mavs have a -2.0 net rating in his minutes, compared to a +8.1 mark when Lively is on the floor.
It’s also worth mentioning that if Dallas needs to aggregate contracts to acquire a player earning $20MM or more, Gafford’s $13.4MM cap hit could be useful. Outside of Maxi Kleber ($11MM), every other Maverick earning above $4MM is a regular part of the rotation when healthy.
Gafford is under contract for one season beyond 2024/25, with a $14.4MM guaranteed salary for ’25/26. He’s currently back in the Mavs’ starting lineup while Lively recovers a right ankle sprain, which will sideline him again on Friday vs. Oklahoma City.

It’s the culmination of Vance’s meteoric, but controversial rise to the national stage: A once fierce Trump critic, the “Hillbilly Elegy” author slowly worked his way into the president-elect’s good graces and became his most vocal ally.
That evolution paid dividends. Now, the 40-year-old father of three finds himself in uncharted territory as the first millennial vice president and second-in-command to the oldest president to assume office − who also survived two assassination attempts. Should he want it, Vance will have the opportunity to run for president in 2028 when Trump’s final term is up.
“That’s why it was such a valuable nomination to get, because of that dynamic,” said Kyle Kondik, managing editor for Sabato’s Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia Center for Politics. “You could potentially be set up to be president as soon as four years from now, and that’s typically not the case.”
What kind of vice president will JD Vance be?
Since the November election, Vance has stayed quiet about his new role and what he hopes to accomplish over the next four years.
He’s no Mike Pence.
Trump’s first vice president took the helm in 2017 with years of experience in elected office, first in Congress and then as governor of Indiana. Many viewed Pence as an ideological balance for the ticket, someone who could rally evangelical Christians who were skeptical of Trump. During his tenure, Pence led the White House COVID-19 task force and leveraged his Capitol Hill experience to serve as Trump’s liaison to Congress.
The pair’s relationship soured when Pence refused to block the certification of the 2020 election results.
Vance, by contrast, served in the Senate for just two years and mirrors Trump in both personality and policy. He’s not afraid to ruffle feathers and play the role of Trump’s attack dog, both on social media and cable news programs. In a September podcast interview, Vance said he would’ve asked states to submit alternative slates of electors if he were in Pence’s shoes on Jan. 6, 2021.

The transition offered clues about how and when Vance may be dispatched.
Vance facilitated meetings between Senate Republicans and some of Trump’s more controversial Cabinet picks, including Pete Hegseth for Defense secretary. He visited western North Carolina with the incoming second lady, Usha Vance, to survey storm damage and criticized the Biden administration’s response. During a recent interview with Fox News, Vance served as translator for Trump’s recent comments about taking over Greenland and outlined the administration’s immediate goals.
“Government should be smaller, but when government does the things that it should do, it ought to do them well,” Vance said. “That’s one of the things that President Trump and I are going to fight to get back to.”
The through line is Vance’s willingness to go to bat for Trump, however needed.
A source familiar with the transition said Vance will take his cues from the president, although he has a personal interest in immigration, technology and trade policy. It’s too soon to say what issues Vance will tackle on Trump’s behalf, the source said, but the two enjoy a good relationship built on trust.
“Being successful as vice president depends upon your relationship with the president and how good you are at doing your job in the perception of the president,” said Joel Goldstein, a law professor and vice presidential scholar at Saint Louis University. “Those two factors are really interrelated. Presidents, like all people, tend to empower people who they like and respect and trust.”
Jerry Dobbins remembers a young Vance growing up in Middletown, decades before he would be sworn in as vice president. Dobbins lived two doors down from Vance’s grandmother − affectionately known as “Mamaw” − and he called her a “tough bird” who pushed her grandson to do well and stay out of trouble.
As a child, Vance watched his mom wrestle with substance use disorder and had a revolving door of father figures. Dobbins believes Vance will carry the lessons of his tumultuous youth to the White House.
“Living where we live here, nobody was what I would really call poor, but nobody right around here had money to throw around like it was water,” Dobbins said. “I think he comes from a background that will make him be looking out for everybody.”
‘He knows why he’s there’
But Vance’s critics see something more sinister in his rapid rise to power: An opportunist who will do whatever it takes to get ahead.
“JD got what he wanted, now let’s see what he can do with it,” said Josh McLaurin, a Democratic state representative in Georgia who lived with Vance during their time at Yale Law School. “American democracy will give his worldview a fair shot. It’s possible that every Aesop’s fable about moral character is wrong.”
Vance’s ambitions beyond the vice presidency remain unclear. Trump is constitutionally barred from running for reelection in 2028, making Vance the likely front runner among potential Republican contenders. Many already see him as the heir apparent to Trump’s movement, particularly after a strong vice-presidential debate performance that got “Vance 2028” trending on social media.
Wisconsin Republican Party Chairman Brian Schimming said he didn’t know much about Vance before last year’s Republican National Convention, when Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson assured him, “You’ll like this guy.” Vance made inroads with GOP voters during the campaign and ticks the right boxes, Schimming said: Smart, experienced and loyal to Trump.
Schimming believes the vice president-elect has a bright future, but he expects Vance to first and foremost do the job before him.
“Nobody’s going to see him with a tape measure in the next four years going, ‘These drapes would look good for me too,’” Schimming said. “He knows what he’s doing there. He knows why he’s there.”
