  • Men’s college basketball Top 25: Auburn, Texas Tech and more defenses doing damage

In honor of the GOAT Patrick Mahomes, Texas Tech returns to this week’s Top 25.

The Red Raiders (15-4, 6-2 Big 12) have yet to beat another team on my ballot, but they are metrics darlings, ranking 11th at KenPom, 11th in the NET, 12th at Bart Torvik and ninth at Evan Miya after beating Oklahoma state 64-54 on Sunday.

Texas Tech head coach Grant McCasland had an awesome offseason. He made a great hire, convincing Wyoming head coach Jeff Linder to take an assistant role running the Red Raiders’ offense. Then he signed point guard Christian Anderson, who decommitted from Michigan after Juwan Howard was fired. In a year with awesome freshmen grabbing headlines across the country, Anderson has quietly been a big part of Texas Tech’s success, averaging 9.5 points and shooting 42.9 percent from 3.

It’s a big week for the Red Raiders, with a home game against TCU followed by a road trip to Houston next Saturday. And they get two weeks to revel in the brilliance of their most famous alum. Go Chiefs.

Now let’s honor some awesome defenses…

Reminder: Below my Top 25, I give nuggets on an unspecified number of teams each week. So when a team appears in the table but not in the text below, that’s why. Scroll on for notes on Auburn, Duke, Iowa State, Houston, Michigan State, Kansas, St. John’s and Louisville.

Midseason All-America team: Cooper Flagg, Johni Broome, Kam Jones and more

    No. 1 Auburn

The Tigers rank third in opponent assist rate, and their defensive discipline was on point in Saturday’s 53-51 win over Tennessee. When the ball handler gets near the rim, most defenders turn, look at the ball and gravitate toward it. Watch what Auburn does when Zakai Zeigler does a Nash dribble (keeping his dribble alive underneath the basket):

Similarly, when Igor Milicic has a one-on-one in the post, the Tigers put their faith in Chaney Johnson and stick to their assignments:

Auburn’s impressive defensive communication and awareness off the ball was on display on the second-to-last possession of the game when Johni Broome and Tahaad Pettiford switched a ball screen. Watch how Johnson (No. 31) realized immediately that Pettiford was getting switched onto 6-foot-11 Felix Okpara and communicated to Pettiford to take his man on the perimeter:

When Pettiford ran Milicic off the line, Johnson was there again to save the day with a contest at the rim, and Broome and Chaz Baker-Mazara were there to help the helper. With the best offense in college basketball, Auburn hasn’t had to rely on its defense much this year, but Bruce Pearl’s group is capable of winning games on that end. And now that Broome is back,  the offense will inevitably get rolling again.

Auburn’s statement against Tennessee: We can miss everything and still win huge games

    No. 2 Duke

Cooper Flagg is putting together a historic January, averaging 25 points, 7.6 rebounds and 5.2 assists in six games. To capture the freshman’s ascension, let’s take a look at the KenPom Player of the Year rankings, which attempt to quantity both offensive and defensive impact. Ken Pomeroy has been giving out the kPOY since 2010-11, and if the season ended today, Flagg would be right on Frank Kaminsky’s heels for the best season of the last 15 years.

    kPOY rating

    Frank Kaminsky (2014-15)

    2.794

    Cooper Flagg (2024-25)

    2.749

    Zach Edey (2023-24)

    2.699

    Russ Smith (2012-13)

    2.636

    Johni Broome (2024-25)

    2.198

Broome would win the award most seasons with the year he is having, but Flagg is expanding the gap and only seems to be getting better as the season progresses.

    No. 3 Iowa State

Coming into this season, T.J. Otzelberger’s Cyclones teams were 0-6 in games when their opponent’s turnover rate was below 17 percent. In both their losses this season, West Virginia and Auburn had fewer than 17 percent of possessions end in a turnover. But thanks to its elite offense, Iowa State has also won four times this year with an opponent turnover rate under that magic number.

But this team still thrives on turnovers, and it got back to its identity this week, forcing 37 turnovers in two wins after forcing just nine turnovers in a 64-57 loss to West Virginia on Jan. 18.

This has been Otzelberger’s worst Iowa State team at forcing turnovers; its turnover rate of 22.2 percent ranks 22nd nationally. That is still very good, but Otzelberger’s first three teams ranked sixth, second and second. The offense was awesome too this week — the Clones hung 108 on UCF.

    No. 6 Houston

Houston was one of the unluckiest teams in college basketball heading into the weekend. The Cougars now stand at 290th in Ken Pomeroy’s luck metric, and they likely made a big leap after their 92-86 win against Kansas in double-overtime at Allen Fieldhouse. (Pomeroy does not archive the luck data.) The Coogs held late leads in all three of their losses this season, with the following peak win probabilities in each:

    • Nov. 9 vs. Auburn: 85.9 percent (74-69 loss)
    • No. 26 vs. Alabama: 90.1 percent (85-80 loss in OT)
    • Nov. 30 vs. San Diego State: 94.6 percent (73-70 loss in OT)

With 20 seconds left in Saturday’s first overtime, Houston had a 0.4 percent chance to win. Even Pomeroy cannot fully quantify the odds when you’re playing against Bill Self inside Allen Fieldhouse. Self was 26-12 all-time in overtime games as Kansas’ coach and 12-2 at home.

Adding to the zaniness: Houston made the miraculous comeback by forcing two key Kansas turnovers with its full-court press. Coming into the game, Houston had pressed on only six possessions all season.

Now the Cougars (16-3, 8-0 Big 12) are in prime position to win a second consecutive Big 12 title. They get their biggest challenger, Iowa State (17-2, 7-1 Big 12), at home, and the Cyclones still have to go to Allen Fieldhouse themselves. The win was also huge for Houston’s NCAA Tournament seeding. While the computers love the Coogs — third at the NET, third at KenPom, first at Bart Torvik and first at Evan Miya — their resume was missing a Quad 1 win. They have one now.

Kelvin Sampson, Houston flip their script in stunning 2-OT rally at Kansas

    No. 8 Michigan State

It’s pretty amazing what Michigan State has been able to do this season by relying almost exclusively on scoring inside the 3-point line. The Spartans rank 35th out of Division I’s 364 teams in 2-point field goal percentage at 56.4 percent. Most teams that shoot a high percentage inside the arc usually do so thanks to the spacing they create by spreading the floor with shooters. Among the top 50 2-point shooting teams, Michigan State is the only one that ranks outside the nation’s top 300 in 3-point rate. (The Spartans attempt 31.9 percent of their shots from 3, ranking 335th in 3-point rate.) The Spartans make only 28.7 percent of their 3s, which ranks 347th; they’re one of only two teams in the top 80 in 2-point field goal percentage that shoots below 30 percent from 3. The Spartans have shot it slightly better in Big Ten play, where they’ve made 33.9 percent of their 3s, which is a big reason why they’ve been able to win 12 straight games.

    No. 11 Kansas

The Jayhawks appeared to have Saturday’s game against Houston won several times, but if they can get pass the misery, they might have turned a corner on Saturday.

The Hunter Dickinson-Flory Bidunga pairing is taking off. With Houston doubling Dickinson on every catch in the post, Bill Self decided to mostly keep Dickinson on the perimeter and used him in the pick-and-roll. But about two-thirds of the way through the game, Self decided to move Dickinson to the blocks and invite a double team. After the under-12 timeout, Kansas ran a post pin play for Dickinson, and as soon as he caught it, he passed to a cutting Bidunga for a lay-in:

Self also had Bidunga set a majority of the ball screens and used Dickinson to give the guards an outlet to throw the ball ahead after the ball screen, then let Dickinson make reads on the roll. That, too, worked beautifully:

Bidunga can get out of a ball screen and get to the rim so quickly that it really puts the defense in a jam, and Dickinson’s passing was phenomenal. He made decisions quickly and found the open guy every time. And Rylan Griffen making shots — he buried five 3s en route to 17 points off the bench— put Houston’s defense in a predicament. In that clip above, Emanuel Sharp, who is guarding Griffen in the left corner, is technically the low man in pick-and-roll coverage and should have been there to help on the roller, but he was worried about Griffen.

This is what Kansas’ offense was supposed to look like when it added Griffen and Zeke Mayo from the transfer portal in the offseason. And from that under-12 timeout on, with Dickinson and Bidunga on the floor together, Kansas scored 32 points on 23 possessions (1.39 points per possession) against a defense that came in No. 1 in adjusted efficiency. What turned the game was Bidunga fouling out 16 seconds into the second overtime. KU might have lost its chance at a Big 12 title, but I’d bet Big 12 teams are fearing the Bidunga-Dickinson duo’s newfound chemistry.

The buzzer-beating Blakes siblings: Jaylen and Mikayla hit game-winners on same weekend

    No. 12 St. John’s

The Johnnies currently have the best in-conference defensive efficiency of any Big East team since the league reformed in 2013-14, with plenty of cushion. They are allowing just 89.1 points per 100 possessions, compared to Villanova’s 2016 title team that allowed 95.3.

When St. John’s tightens the screws, finding a decent look is exhausting. Xavier led St. John’s 50-34 with 17 minutes left on Wednesday. I charted the defensive possessions from that point forward:

    Quality shots Contested shots Turnovers

    Xavier

    6-11

    1-17

    8

The Musketeers scored 21 points on 35 possessions (0.6 PPP) over that stretch. The reason it’s so hard to find a quality look is that St. John’s can switch everything.

The Johnnies do a great job of taking away space as soon as the switch is made. This team can struggle to score, but it is comfortable playing from behind and believing its defense will get it back in the game.

Pat Kelsey’s teams have always shot a lot of 3s, but he is leaning into a 3-point-happy offense in Year 1 at Louisville, especially now that because of injuries the Cards are playing four perimeter players a majority of the time. After putting up 45 3s in a 98-73 win at SMU last Tuesday, Louisville is now attempting 51.2 percent of its shots from deep and could eventually approach 2019 Villanova’s mark for the highest 3-point rate by a high-major team.

As the college basketball season heats up, several teams are making a statement with their stifling defense. Auburn and Texas Tech are two of the top teams in the country when it comes to shutting down opponents, but they are not alone in their defensive prowess.

Auburn currently sits at No. 1 in the AP Top 25 poll, and a big reason for their success has been their defense. The Tigers are holding opponents to just 37.6% shooting from the field, which ranks 8th in the nation. They are also forcing turnovers at a high rate, averaging 9.7 steals per game.

Texas Tech, meanwhile, is ranked No. 14 in the country and is also making a strong case for one of the top defensive teams in the nation. The Red Raiders are holding opponents to just 38.1% shooting from the field and are forcing turnovers on 24.4% of possessions, which ranks 4th in the country.

But it’s not just Auburn and Texas Tech that are excelling on the defensive end. Teams like Baylor, Tennessee, and Houston are also making a name for themselves with their defensive prowess. Baylor is holding opponents to just 57.5 points per game, while Tennessee is forcing turnovers on 23.1% of possessions.

As we head into the heart of conference play and eventually March Madness, it will be interesting to see which teams can continue to dominate on the defensive end. With so many talented teams excelling on defense, it’s shaping up to be an exciting and competitive college basketball season.

  • 5 defenses the Penn State star would make unstoppable

5 defenses the Penn State star would make unstoppable

One of the biggest reasons why the Penn State Nittany Lions are an incredibly dangerous No. 6 seed in the 12-team College Football Playoff is the elite athlete they have in the middle of their defense in Abdul Carter. He is every bit the next Micah Parsons, Paul Posluszny or LaVar Arrington. ST1X C1TY is indeed a place, and Carter is the mayor of it right now in Happy Valley. He is so utterly electrifying.

Carter may have more important things on his mind right now than entering the 2025 NFL Draft, but it certainly beckons. Fresh off the Nittany Lions’ first-ever playoff win over SMU, Penn State has up to three more games on the horizon before this season is finished. Given that they are on the easier side of the bracket, who is to say that Carter cannot leave State College as a national champion this year?

Although he could return to school for another season, Carter’s talent is simply too undeniable for him to stay in college for one more year. He is a lock to be a top-12 pick, possibly with an outside shot of cracking the top five. Look for him to be coming off the board in the No. 6 to No. 12 range in the upcoming draft should he declare. He is every bit a cornerstone piece to build a defense around.

Here are five NFL teams who could be chomping at the bit to make Carter a vibrant part of their team.

The Cleveland Browns are in a very precarious spot when it comes to the 2025 NFL Draft. They are locked to be picking inside of the top 10, but could see their draft positioning fluctuate heading into the final week of the season. While Cleveland does need an upgrade at starting quarterback, can they really afford to have another first-rounder and Deshaun Watson on the same payroll? I question that.

Realistically speaking, I think the Browns picking inside the top five is about as high as Carter could be coming off the draft board. Obviously, the Browns would have to trade back from something like No. 3 if he was their prized jewel on the draft boards. He is a tremendous player, but I wonder if this is as seamless of a fit as it looks upon first glance. Cleveland has many other issues to solve this spring.

If the Browns were picking at something like No. 7 overall, I can see them taking Carter with the pick.

The New York Jets are the epitome of how to continually keep a franchise in the ground in a league driven by parity. I am not sure what the long-term plans are for Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, so I think they could look to draft his successor this spring as well. For my money, I think Gang Green goes with the best defensive player available in the 2025 NFL Draft. If available, it might be Carter.

Right now, I feel that other Power Four stars like Mason Graham out of Michigan or potentially Mykel Williams out of Georgia might be the better fit for what they are trying to do now. However, if the Jets are on the clock at No. 8 and Carter is still available, do not overthink the room and just draft the guy. Carter has the potential to carry an NFL defense for a decade. The Jets would be lucky to have him.

The Jets will have plenty of options to find a star in the defensive front-seven, so it could be Carter.

If the Chicago Bears know how to do anything well, it is to draft and develop star defensive players coming out of college football. Figuring out the offensive side of the ball might as well be the moon to them, but the Bears have a proven track record of excellence on defense, particularly in the defensive front seven. Carter would be every bit the plug-and-play type of superstar for them moving forward.

No matter who takes over for Matt Eberflus full-time should be able to have great success with Carter as part of their team. I hope for everyone on the team’s sake that Ryan Poles is gone and he takes Kevin Warren with him. Regardless, I sense Chicago may prioritize and offensive tackle to help keep Caleb Williams upright with their certain top-10 pick. Carter would be a steal for them, but I do get it.

The Bears have a lot of holes on their roster, but I would be shocked if they do not go offensive tackle.

We can only hope that whoever is running the Jacksonville Jaguars prioritizes defense in the 2025 NFL Draft. They could be in line for any star defensive player at any level. This might be the team that ends up taking Michigan cornerback Will Johnson or Colorado’s Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, but I would not be surprised if Jacksonville stops Carter’s slightest fall down the draft board.

Since Jacksonville does not seem ready just yet to move on from starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence, it serves the franchise to get another cornerstone on the other side of the ball to help re-solidify the defense. Any time Jacksonville is the least bit good they have dudes on that side of the ball. Carter is the epitome of a dude. He could become one of their best players in franchise history.

I do side with corner or defensive tackle over an edge rusher here, but beggars cannot be choosers.

This is so obvious. The Carolina Panthers will be picking well inside of the top 10. They do not need a quarterback with Bryce Young finally playing up to standard after briefly getting benched by Dave Canales mid-season. With their new general manager Dan Morgan being a former star linebacker himself back in his playing days, it feels like it is going to be impossible for Carolina to pass on Carter.

Anytime the Panthers have been championship-caliber in their brief history, they have had an all-timer on the defense. From the late legends of Kevin Greene and Sam Mills, to Julius Peppers, to Thomas Davis, to Luke Kuechly, this is the Panthers standard. I would hope that Morgan and company would read the message in the tea leaves to go ahead and select Carolina’s next all-time defender.

The only thing that would not make this a picturesque fit would have to be potential draft positioning.

Next. NFL Draft: Best first-round draft pick in each slot in history. Best first-round draft pick in each NFL Draft slot in history. dark

    1. Speed and agility: The Penn State star is known for their lightning-fast speed and quick footwork, making it nearly impossible for offensive players to keep up with them on the field.
    2. Strength and power: With a powerful build and strong physicality, the Penn State star can easily overpower opponents and dominate in one-on-one matchups.
    3. Intelligence and strategy: The Penn State star has a keen understanding of the game and knows how to anticipate the movements of their opponents, allowing them to make smart defensive plays and shut down scoring opportunities.
    4. Versatility and adaptability: Whether playing as a cornerback, safety, or linebacker, the Penn State star can excel in any defensive position and adapt to different game situations with ease.
    5. Tenacity and determination: The Penn State star never gives up on a play and always gives 100% effort on the field, making them a relentless and unstoppable force on defense.

  • Michigan DC Wink Martindale recaps the Ohio State game plan, the defense’s improvements, impression of QBs

Michigan DC Wink Martindale recaps the Ohio State game plan, the defense’s improvements, impression of QBs

TAMPA, Fla. — Michigan football shocked Ohio State to conclude the regular season, with the Wolverines’ defense holding the high-powered Buckeyes’ offense to 10 points in a road upset.

A month after The Game, DC Wink Martindale spoke with media for the first time since coordinating the unit’s effort in Columbus. He discussed how hits on QB Will Howard changed the trajectory of the game, and how the defense’s performance was a continuation of improvements that began much earlier in the season. During his press conference ahead of the ReliaQuest Bowl, Martindale also named players who have impressed him in recent practices, and he offered his early impressions of QBs Bryce Underwood and Mikey Keene.

Here is everything Wink Martindale said:

Wink Martindale on the defensive line against Alabama:

I think the guys that were backing up earlier in the year, they’re gonna get a lot more playing time. And that’s gonna be the challenge for those guys is guys that are getting six to ten reps a game are gonna go up to 30, 40 reps. It’ll be interesting to see how they handle that. We’ll have a lot of the younger guys that haven’t had a chance to play, they’ll get in the mix and be able to get in that rotation.

Wink Martindale on Rayshaun Benny being the anchor for the DL right now:

Of course he is. Yeah, Rayshaun is.

Wink Martindale on the younger defensive lineman who have impressed him:

I think that Trey’s had a nice bowl prep. Enow’s had a nice bowl prep. Ike, he continues to grow in his role. So it’s gonna be exciting to see and fun to watch.

Wink Martindale on the Ohio State game plan:

Well, we were really confident in the game plan. Our whole message was all week, let’s take them to the deep end in the fourth quarter. We knew then we could take over the game defensively.

So I know there’s been a lot of speculation about this and that, this and that. But all credit to the players. The game always has been, always will be about them. I came out with that on Twitter because that’s what it was.

We just physically outplayed them. And guys, when your best players are playing their best, that’s when you have a lot of success. And you saw that with Makari’s hit on the quarterback, and Ernest’s hit on the quarterback that was sort of hidden that no one saw because it was on a read sweep, but he got hit pretty good. And after that, he started getting a little nervous back there.

So the guys had a great rush plan. Lou had a great rush plan. And Kevin with the four up front. LaMar and BJ did a great job with the coverage aspect of it. Just sticking to our game plan. And it was a lot of fun to watch.

    This story continues below…

Michigan defensive coordinator Wink Martindale recaps the Ohio State game plan and the defense’s improvements

After a tough loss to Ohio State, Michigan defensive coordinator Wink Martindale took to the podium to discuss the game plan against the Buckeyes and the improvements he saw from his defense.

Martindale acknowledged that Ohio State’s offense was tough to contain, especially with their explosive playmakers. He explained that the game plan was to try and disrupt their rhythm and force turnovers, but ultimately the Buckeyes were able to execute at a high level.

Despite the loss, Martindale was pleased with the improvements he saw from his defense throughout the game. He noted that the players were communicating well, making adjustments on the fly, and tackling more effectively. These are all positive signs moving forward, as the Wolverines look to finish the season strong.

In addition to discussing the defense’s performance, Martindale also shared his impressions of the quarterbacks. He praised their competitiveness and leadership on the field, and expressed confidence in their ability to bounce back from this loss.

Overall, Martindale remains optimistic about the rest of the season and believes that the defense will continue to improve and make a strong push towards the postseason.

  • Ashton Jeanty, Boise State have Penn State defense’s full attention for Fiesta Bowl

Ashton Jeanty, Boise State have Penn State defense’s full attention for Fiesta Bowl

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Tom Allen didn’t need to see much film of Ashton Jeanty to fully comprehend what Penn State’s defense is up against in the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff on Tuesday.

“I’ll tell you I’ve enjoyed it — well, I don’t know if I’ve enjoyed it — but it’s been impressive to watch his film and studying him,” Allen said Friday about the Boise State running back. “He just doesn’t go down.”

For as much as Penn State wants to keep everything as normal as possible this week before departing Saturday for the Fiesta Bowl, the one person likely determining whether the Nittany Lions’ Playoff run continues is Jeanty. Boise State’s 5-foot-9, 215-pound running back is unlike anyone Penn State has played this season and is unlike anyone in the sport.

No one else averaged 192.1 rushing yards per game this season. No one else almost single-handedly carried his team into the postseason. Jeanty finished second in Heisman Trophy voting, and his 2,479 rushing yards are tops in the nation. He’s 131 yards shy of Barry Sanders’ single-season rushing record set at Oklahoma State in 1988.

Fittingly, Jeanty showed up to New York City this month for a Heisman photoshoot decked out in team-issued gear instead of a snazzy suit. In his windbreaker and sweats, he looked ready to pinball off defenders and make them look silly in the process.

“We played against Derrick Henry when I was at Ole Miss,” Allen said. “He was taller but similar in regards to they’re hard to get on the ground. They’re guys that can stiff-arm you and just kind of seem to play with you. … Played a lot of good backs over the years, but he’s gonna go down as one of the greatest ones we’ve ever played against.”

Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Allen’s unit is seventh in the nation this season in rush defense. (Matthew O’Haren / Imagn Images)

Boise State credits Jeanty with wracking up 1,889 yards after contact this season. It also credits him with forcing opponents to miss 143 tackles. The statistics are jarring and the highlights are fun to watch unless you’re the ones tasked with trying to slow him down. As James Franklin pointed out this week, Jeanty would’ve been the Heisman winner in most years. He certainly was a worthy candidate this season.

“He’s a beast,” Franklin said. “He has more yards after contact than most of the elite backs in college football have in general, overall.”

Penn State’s defenders sounded well-versed in those yards after contact statistics, ones that Franklin has been mentioning publicly since Monday. The Nittany Lions rush defense is seventh nationally this season (100.36 yards per game) and is the top-ranked run defense remaining in the Playoff field.

Penn State’s defensive staff went back and looked at Oregon’s game against Boise State this season to see if there was anything to learn from Jeanty’s performance that day. Jeanty had 25 carries for 192 yards and three touchdowns in a game the Broncos lost by 3 points. Because Penn State has its Big Ten title game loss to the Ducks fresh in its mind, the coaches wanted to use that comparison as one more piece of information, one more data point to see what’s effective and ineffective against Jeanty.

“Our biggest responsibility this week is to find a way to effectively corral him and tackle him,” Allen said.

Penn State has enlisted Tyler Holzworth, a junior, to mimic Jeanty on the scout team. It’s an impossible ask, but the 6-0, 219-pound Nittany Lions back can help present some of the same looks that Boise State gives with Jeanty.

Allen’s message to his defense is that it truly will take a team effort to bring Jeanty to the ground. The coaches and players have seen countless examples of teams that have tried and failed to do so. Nittany Lions running back Nick Singleton has seen Jeanty’s highlights. Singleton said he has seen many players go for big hits only to whiff as Jeanty keeps his balance and extends the play.

    go-deeper

    GO DEEPER

Ashton Jeanty’s legacy at Boise State is secure, but he’s still chasing history

“The strike zone is so compressed because of his build that it’s hard to really get a good shot on him,” Allen said. “You’re gonna have to gang tackle him. You’re gonna have to get every possible guy on that field around him, and they obviously will make that hard per their scheme.”

Penn State’s players struggled to compare anyone that they’ve faced to Jeanty. Some pointed to teammate Kaytron Allen, who at 5-11, 220 can be difficult to bring to the ground. Middle linebacker Kobe King drew a comparison to former Michigan running back Blake Corum. Corum’s compact 5-8, 210-pound build is similar to Jeanty’s. Running behind a powerful offensive line, Corum shredded Penn State last year with a season-best 145 rushing yards on 26 carries.

While the Nittany Lions are favored in this game much like they were in the opening round against SMU, there’s perhaps no player remaining in the Playoff field who gives defensive coordinators more headaches than Jeanty. In a win-or-go-home scenario, Penn State gets Jeanty a little more well-rested than usual as Boise State is coming off a first-round bye.

“To go against the Heisman runner-up who is also the top running back in the country, that’s a treat for anybody who considers themselves a competitor,” defensive tackle Dvon J-Thomas said. “You see it on film the biggest challenge is just finishing tackles.”

Ashton Jeanty, Boise State have Penn State defense’s full attention for Fiesta Bowl

The Fiesta Bowl is quickly approaching and all eyes are on Boise State’s star running back, Ashton Jeanty. The Penn State defense knows they have a tough challenge ahead of them as they prepare to face off against Jeanty and the explosive Boise State offense.

Jeanty has been a force to be reckoned with all season, rushing for over 1,000 yards and scoring multiple touchdowns. His speed, agility, and elusiveness make him a nightmare for opposing defenses to contain.

The Penn State defense is well aware of Jeanty’s abilities and have been studying film and developing a game plan to try and slow him down. Linebackers and defensive backs are focusing on staying disciplined in their assignments and rallying to the ball to limit Jeanty’s big play potential.

Boise State’s offense is known for their high-powered attack and the Penn State defense knows they will have their work cut out for them in the Fiesta Bowl. But with their full attention on Ashton Jeanty and the rest of the Broncos’ offense, they are confident they can rise to the challenge and come out on top in this highly anticipated matchup.

  • Putin apologizes for Azerbaijan Airlines crash as he admits Russian air defenses were active at the time

Putin apologizes for Azerbaijan Airlines crash as he admits Russian air defenses were active at the time

    CNN
     —

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has apologized for the fact that an Azerbaijan Airlines flight crashed after entering Russian airspace in Grozny, Chechnya on Wednesday, but did not say that Russia was responsible.

Putin said Saturday that Russia’s air defense systems were active when the plane attempted to land in Grozny, according to the Kremlin. Unable to reach the airport, the aircraft diverted east, eventually crashing near Aktau, Kazakhstan, killing 38 people on board.

It is unconfirmed what was behind the incident, but a US official told CNN on Thursday that early indications suggest a Russian anti-aircraft system may have downed the passenger jet. In his comments, Putin did not say that Russian air defenses hit the plane.

Putin “apologized for the fact that the tragic incident occurred in Russian airspace” in a phone call with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev, the Kremlin said in a statement.

The Kremlin said that the plane “repeatedly attempted to land at the airport in Grozny” but at the same time, the areas of “Grozny, Mozdok and Vladikavkaz were attacked by Ukrainian combat drones, and Russian air defense systems repelled these attacks.”

Russia’s investigative committee has opened a criminal case in relation to the disaster, the statement said.

In a statement on Friday, Ukraine’s foreign minister Andrii Sybiha said Russian media has “lied about the cause of the crash,” adding that Moscow “forced the damaged jet to cross the sea, most likely in an attempt to conceal evidence of their crime.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a public apology following the tragic crash of Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 317. In a shocking admission, Putin revealed that Russian air defenses were indeed active at the time of the crash, leading to the devastating loss of all passengers and crew on board.

The incident, which occurred on Monday night, has sent shockwaves through the international community as investigators scramble to piece together what went wrong. Putin’s rare display of contrition comes as a surprise to many, as the Russian leader is known for his tough and often unyielding stance on matters of national security.

“I deeply regret the loss of innocent lives in this tragic accident,” Putin said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those who perished. We take full responsibility for this terrible mistake and will work tirelessly to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.”

The admission of Russian involvement in the crash has sparked outrage and calls for accountability from the global community. Many are demanding a thorough investigation into the incident, with some even calling for Putin to step down from office.

As the world waits for more details to emerge, one thing is clear: the crash of Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 317 has left a scar on the hearts of many, and the road to healing will be a long and difficult one.

Strengthening Data Center Defenses: How Risk Assessment Can Enhance Security Preparedness

In today’s digital age, data centers play a critical role in storing and processing vast amounts of sensitive information. With cyber threats on the rise, it is more important than ever for organizations to strengthen their data center defenses to protect against potential security breaches. One key strategy for enhancing security preparedness is conducting regular risk assessments to identify vulnerabilities and develop effective mitigation strategies.

A risk assessment is a systematic process of evaluating potential security risks and vulnerabilities within a data center environment. By conducting a thorough assessment, organizations can identify potential threats, assess the likelihood of those threats occurring, and determine the potential impact on their operations. This information is crucial for developing a comprehensive security strategy that can help prevent and mitigate potential security breaches.

One of the key benefits of conducting a risk assessment is that it allows organizations to prioritize their security efforts based on the level of risk. By identifying the most critical vulnerabilities and potential threats, organizations can allocate their resources more effectively to address the most pressing security concerns. This targeted approach can help organizations focus their efforts on areas that are most likely to be targeted by cyber attackers, reducing the overall risk of a security breach.

Additionally, conducting a risk assessment can help organizations identify gaps in their current security measures and develop a roadmap for improving their security posture. By evaluating the effectiveness of existing security controls and identifying areas where additional safeguards are needed, organizations can strengthen their defenses and better protect their data center environment from potential threats.

Furthermore, a risk assessment can help organizations comply with industry regulations and standards related to data security. By identifying potential security risks and vulnerabilities, organizations can take proactive steps to address these issues and ensure that they are meeting the necessary compliance requirements. This can help organizations avoid costly fines and penalties for non-compliance and demonstrate their commitment to protecting sensitive information.

In conclusion, conducting a risk assessment is a critical step in enhancing data center security preparedness. By identifying potential threats, vulnerabilities, and gaps in security measures, organizations can develop a targeted security strategy that can help prevent and mitigate potential security breaches. By prioritizing security efforts, improving security controls, and ensuring compliance with industry regulations, organizations can strengthen their data center defenses and better protect their sensitive information from cyber threats.
