  • Sixers power ranking roundup: Can this team find a defensive identity?

Today is Wednesday, and that means the time has come to take the temperature of the national media’s feelings about this year’s Sixers team. Let’s get into it:

NBA.com: 22 (no change from last week)

It is no secret that Joel Embiid’s prolonged absences have complicated the Sixers’ path to winning games on a consistent basis. Writer John Schuhmann points out how the team’s win on Saturday night could be a sign of progress after a disastrous loss earlier in the week:

The win in Chicago (their first win in the second game of a back-to-back) was also, statistically, the Sixers’ best defensive game (97 points allowed on 102 possessions) without Joel Embiid, who’s now missed the last 11 games. They’ve still rank 29th defensively and last in total rebounding percentage over his absence. The Nuggets’ 144 points on 97 possessions on Tuesday was the most efficient performance for any team this season.” [NBA.com]

Even a few days later, Sixers head coach Nick Nurse made a point to rave about his team’s defensive effort in Chicago. On the second leg of a home-road back-to-back, playing against one of the fastest-paced teams in recent memory, the Sixers were able to lock in as a defense and force a ton of late turnovers to put the game away.

ESPN: 22 (+1 from last week)

Perhaps the only real break the Sixers have caught this season is the overall incompetence in the bottom half of the Eastern Conference. Writer Tim Bontemps explains:

To show how weak the bottom of the Eastern Conference is: The 76ers lost seven games in a row earlier this month before pulling off back-to-back victories over the Cavaliers and Bulls and gained a game on the 10th-place Bulls in that span. This is why the ongoing belief is that no matter how hard Philadelphia tries, it’s probably going to remain in the fight for a play-in spot until the end of the season.” [ESPN]

The Chicago Bulls remain the team to watch, as the Sixers are now just one game back of the Eastern Conference’s No. 10 seed. But with the knowledge that they will only keep their first-round pick if it falls within the top 10 selections and plenty of veterans to trade, the Bulls could consider making a business decision.

The Athletic: 22 (+1 from last week)

In his power rankings, Law Murray details each team’s performance in the first and second quarters of the regular season now that the midway point has been crossed:

Philadelphia began the season with an average defense and a terrible offense. The second quarter of the season went better, but now it’s the offense that is average while the defense struggles. The Sixers miss the rim protection Joel Embiid would provide, and it’s leaving Philadelphia as the worst defense at the rim in the league.” [The Athletic]

Of course, Embiid’s otherworldly scoring capabilities are greatly missed whenever he is not on the floor. But without consistent rim protection behind him, his loss has been felt to a tremendous degree on the defensive end of the floor as well.

The Philadelphia 76ers have had an up-and-down start to the season, currently sitting at 6-4 and trying to find their footing on the defensive end. Let’s take a look at how various power rankings are assessing the team’s performance:

    1. ESPN: The 76ers are ranked 7th in ESPN’s latest power rankings, with a focus on their defensive struggles. The team has the potential to be a defensive powerhouse with players like Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, but they have yet to find a consistent identity on that end of the court.

    2. NBA.com: According to NBA.com, the Sixers are ranked 9th, with a note on their offensive efficiency. While their defense has been lacking at times, their offense has been clicking, thanks in large part to the play of Tobias Harris and Seth Curry.

    3. Bleacher Report: Bleacher Report has the 76ers ranked 8th, highlighting their potential for improvement on defense. With new head coach Doc Rivers at the helm, there is optimism that the team can figure out their defensive issues and become a more well-rounded squad.

    4. CBS Sports: CBS Sports has the Sixers ranked 6th, pointing to their strong start to the season despite their defensive struggles. They believe that once the team figures out their defensive identity, they will be a force to be reckoned with in the Eastern Conference.

Overall, it’s clear that the Sixers have the pieces to be a top team in the league, but they need to figure out their defensive identity in order to reach their full potential. Only time will tell if they can make the necessary adjustments and become a more well-rounded team.

  • Surprise defensive loanee from France lined up by Juve

Juventus head coach Motta is under increasing pressure in Turin following two defeats on the bounce, so bringing in the 26-year-old Austrian center-back should help his cause to win over fans and pundits.

His problems include centre-back Gleison Bremer and left-back Juan Cabal with long-term injuries, on top of the short-term loss of the services of defender Pierre Kalulu this week.

The 24-year-old pulled his hamstring during the first half of the Champions League debacle against Benfica, and is expected to be sidelined for a couple of weeks. It meant that Federico Gatti was Motta’s sole natural defender in the back four against Benfica once Kalulu was withdrawn.

This revelation about Danso is somewhat of a surprise, given that Juve sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli has been coy about adding personnel during the current transfer window.

He told Sky Italia this week: “As of now, our transfer market is effectively closed. But we will keep an eye out for any opportunities that suit our requirements.”

There had been interest in Danso earlier this month, but Juventus were determined to maintain their stance that they didn’t wish to agree to a loan with an option to buy.

Danso is apparently arriving from French outfit RC Lens for an initial loan fee of €2.5 million (US$2.6m) for a short-term loan spell. If a deal goes through then he will follow recently recruited Renato Veiga, who is on loan from Chelsea.

Veiga, who was ineligible to play against Portuguese giants Benfica on Wednesday, is expected to partner Gatti when Empoli visit the Allianz Stadium on Sunday. However, Danso could be part of Motta’s squad if his medical and contract get hurried through.

Motta’s side looked despondent throughout their clash with Benfica, and to add insult to injury were jeered off by home fans at half-time and full-time. Empoli, who are on a seven-game winless run, are just the sort of opponents that Motta’s men need to tackle in order to stop the rot following back-to-back defeats.

Juventus fans, get ready to be surprised! The Italian giants are reportedly close to securing a loan deal for a highly-rated defender from France.

The player in question is none other than Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig. The 23-year-old center-back has been a standout performer in the Bundesliga and has caught the eye of several top clubs across Europe.

Juventus are in need of defensive reinforcements and Upamecano could be the perfect solution. Known for his strength, speed, and excellent reading of the game, the Frenchman would add some much-needed quality to the Bianconeri’s backline.

While the deal is not yet finalized, sources close to the club suggest that an agreement is imminent and fans can expect an official announcement in the coming days.

Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting transfer development and get ready to welcome Upamecano to Turin! #ForzaJuve

  • Kansas State’s Jerome Tang Details Recent Defensive Improvement

Kansas State is having its best two-game stretch in conference play this season.

Wildcats coach Jerome Tang attributes the dominating performances to the strong scoring defense. Since its Baylor loss, Kansas State has allowed just 58.5 points per game, far below its season average of 70.5.

“I think our guys have paid attention to the scouting report and tried to execute the game plan of what we needed to take away to make teams play to their second and third best things,” Tang said after the blowout victory over Oklahoma State. “But part of being a good defensive team is taking the right shots. Because then you don’t get the other team out in transition. It’s not turning the ball over.”

Tang nearly echoed Brendan Hausen and Coleman Hawkins’ correlation between good defense and efficient shooting.

“If our transition defense gets better, I’d feel more comfortable shooting quicker catch-and-shoot 3s,” Hawkins said Wednesday night. “I feel like we need to work on that. That way, our long shots and long rebounds aren’t leaking out and getting them easier transition buckets.”

As the team’s main sharpshooter, Hausen says getting stops defensively allows him to set better on the other end.

“We got stops tonight, I was able to run, which always helps to free me up,” Hausen said. “It was definitely nice to see the first few go in, and the bucket just gets bigger from there.”

Jayden Armant is a graduate of the Howard University School of Communications and a contributor to Kansas State Wildcats on SI. He can be reached at jaydenshome14@gmail.com or follow him on Twitter @jaydenarmant.

Kansas State’s Assistant Head Coach Jerome Tang recently sat down to discuss the team’s recent defensive improvement and the key factors that have contributed to their success on that end of the court.

Tang highlighted the team’s improved communication and effort level as two of the main reasons for their defensive turnaround. He emphasized the importance of players being engaged and locked in on every possession, as well as their willingness to communicate and work together as a unit.

In addition to their improved effort and communication, Tang also pointed to the team’s commitment to rebounding and limiting second-chance opportunities for their opponents as key factors in their defensive success. He praised the players for their attention to detail and willingness to do the dirty work necessary to be successful on defense.

Overall, Tang expressed his pride in the team’s defensive improvement and stressed the importance of continuing to focus on that end of the court as they head into the final stretch of the season. With their newfound defensive mindset and commitment, Kansas State looks poised to make a strong push in the upcoming games.

  • Real Madrid Suffer Key Defensive Injury In First-Half Against Espanyol

Real Madrid suffered a key defensive injury against Espanyol after just 15 minutes of the crucial La Liga game.

Center-back Antonio Rudiger was forced off with what appeared to be a knee injury. Young Spaniard Raul Asencio replaced the German.

Los Blancos players gathered around Rudiger with concern as he held his left leg. He was quickly replaced, which could be a long-term concern for Carlo Ancelotti.

David Alaba has just returned, but Ancelotti was already struggling in that area with Eder Militao out for the season.

The transfer window is still open until January 3, so if the tests come back tomorrow as a long-term concern, then Ancelotti may strike a last-minute deal to bring a player in at the position.

Real Madrid fans were left holding their breath as star defender Raphael Varane suffered a key defensive injury in the first half of their match against Espanyol.

Varane went down clutching his leg after a collision with an Espanyol player, and had to be helped off the pitch by medical staff. The French international’s absence was immediately felt as Espanyol capitalized on the defensive lapse to score a goal.

The injury comes at a crucial time for Real Madrid, who are currently fighting for the La Liga title and have important matches coming up in the Champions League. Varane’s presence in the backline is crucial for the team’s defensive stability, and his absence will be sorely felt in the coming matches.

Fans are now anxiously awaiting updates on Varane’s condition and hoping for a speedy recovery. In the meantime, Real Madrid will have to regroup and find a way to cope without one of their key defensive players.

  • 5 things to know about Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard

The job Glenn did to maintain a pretty consistent level of play on defense this past year despite all the injuries on that side of the ball was pretty remarkable. When Sheppard hits the ground running in this new role come April, he’ll have plenty of pieces to work with.

His linebacker room will be strong with Anzalone, Campbell and Rodriguez all under contract. We’ll see what the Lions opt to do with Barnes set to become a free agent.

Detroit’s starting four upfront should be disruptive and versatile with Aidan Hutchinson, Alim McNeill, DJ Reader and Za’Darius Smith all under contract, plus a few key reserves coming back too.

Kerby Joseph, Brian Branch, Amik Robertson, Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. are all back in the secondary and that’s an area Detroit’s expected to continue to develop and add to this offseason by either re-signing Carlton Davis III, adding another veteran in free agency or continuing to add young talent to the mix via the draft.

Sheppard will have the pieces to implement his style of play and vision for this defense in 2025.

Sheppard once considered cutting his dreadlocks, believing the look might hinder his ability to get a job coaching in the NFL. Campbell encouraged Sheppard to keep his hairstyle, saying it was part of the young coach’s identity. Sheppard never forgot that conversation with Campbell and it’s allowed him to be his authentic self throughout his coaching career.

“I went through it and he’s like, ‘Thinking about cutting your what? What? Are you crazy? First of all, I love your hair,’” Sheppard said back in 2022. “He’s like, ‘But seriously, Shep, if I’m hiring you, if anybody’s hiring you, they’re hiring you because of you. You got those jobs because of who you are, not because of somebody you’re trying to become.’ And that resonated with me.”

    1. Former NFL Linebacker: Kelvin Sheppard played as a linebacker in the NFL for 8 seasons, suiting up for teams like the Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, and Detroit Lions.
    2. Coaching Experience: Sheppard transitioned into coaching after retiring from playing in 2018. He started as a defensive analyst at the University of Louisiana in 2019 before joining the Detroit Lions as a defensive assistant in 2020. He was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2021.
    3. Player Development: Sheppard is known for his ability to develop young players and help them reach their full potential. Under his guidance, the Lions defense has shown improvement and growth throughout the 2021 season.
    4. Defensive Philosophy: Sheppard’s defensive philosophy focuses on aggressive and physical play, emphasizing fundamentals and technique. He aims to create a unit that is disciplined, tough, and able to generate turnovers.
    5. Leadership Qualities: Sheppard is praised for his leadership qualities, including his communication skills, motivational tactics, and ability to connect with players. He is respected by his peers and players for his work ethic and dedication to the game.

(Photo by Justin K. Aller/Getty Images)

It has begun! Art Rooney II told everyone that while coaching staff changes were coming, the moves wouldn’t be “wholesale.”

Aaron Curry, who has been with the Pittsburgh Steelers as the team’s inside linebackers coach since February 2023, has been hired by the New York Jets as their new linebackers coach.

While no one can deny the inconsistency surrounding the run-stopping duties of the linebacker room in 2024, Curry was hardly the problem behind the defensive struggles as a whole.

Curry is expected to play a major role on the New York Jets’ coaching staff under new head coach Aaron Glenn and new defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.

Will more changes follow Curry’s departure from the Black and Gold? If so, will the Pittsburgh Steelers make the right decision and move on from defensive coordinator Teryl Austin? No one can deny that this 2025 offseason is shaping up to be an exciting one as January comes to a close.

This article originally appeared on Steelers Wire: Steelers lose defensive coach to the New York Jets

The Pittsburgh Steelers have suffered a major blow as their defensive coach has decided to leave the team and join the New York Jets. This unexpected departure has left Steelers fans wondering how the team will adjust and move forward without their key defensive strategist.

The defensive coach, who played a crucial role in shaping the Steelers’ defense over the past few seasons, will now be tasked with revamping the struggling Jets defense. His departure comes at a crucial time for the Steelers, as they are currently in the midst of a playoff push and will need to quickly find a replacement to fill the void left by his absence.

While losing a key member of the coaching staff is never easy, the Steelers will need to regroup and focus on finding a suitable replacement to ensure their defense remains strong and competitive. With the playoffs looming, the team will need to quickly adapt to this unexpected change in order to stay on track and continue their pursuit of a championship.

Only time will tell how this coaching change will impact the Steelers, but one thing is for certain – the team will need to come together and rally around their new defensive coach in order to overcome this setback and continue their quest for success.

  • Jacksonville Jaguars Hire Anthony Campanile As Defensive Coordinator

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville Jaguars have hired Anthony Campanile as defensive coordinator, the team announced today.

“Anthony Campanile represents exactly what we want to be as a defensive unit and football team,” said Head Coach Liam Coen. “He brings an aggressive defensive mindset and a system that is adaptable to our players and allows them to play fast and physical.”

Campanile will enter his sixth season in the NFL in 2025, first as a defensive coordinator. In 2024, Campanile served as the linebackers coach/running game coordinator for the Green Bay Packers. The Packers defense allowed the seventh fewest rush yards per game (99.4) under Campanile’s guidance. He also helped Green Bay’s defense finish fourth in total points allowed (318) and fifth in total defense (314.5). Rookie LB Edgerrin Cooper was named NFC Defensive Rookie of the Month for December/January to close out his 2024 campaign.

Prior to joining the Packers, Campanile spent four seasons as linebackers coach for the Dolphins, helping Miami rank fourth in the NFL over that span in sacks (185.0), sixth in rushing defense (106.4 ypg), eighth in takeaways (96), eighth in third-down defense (38.6 pct.) and tied fifth in forced fumbles (56). In 2023, the Dolphins set a franchise-record with 56.0 sacks, LB Bradley Chubb posted a team-high 11.0 sacks and six forced fumbles.

Campanile’s college coaching career included three years at Boston College (2016-18), where he helped six of his defensive backs earn All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors and saw four of his defensive backs go on to be selected in the NFL Draft (S John Johnson III, CB Kamrin Moore, CB Isaac Yiadom, S Will Harris).

Campanile, a native of New Jersey, began his coaching career as a student assistant at Rutgers in 2005 after playing safety and linebacker for the Scarlet Knights from 2002-04. He then coached for six seasons (2006-11) at the high school level, including five years at Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.), where he helped guide the Ironmen to state titles in both 2010 and 2011 and a No. 1 national ranking in 2011. He returned to Rutgers in 2012 as a defensive assistant and switched to the offensive side of the ball, coaching tight ends (2013-2014) and wide receivers (2015).

The Jacksonville Jaguars have officially announced the hiring of Anthony Campanile as their new Defensive Coordinator. Campanile brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role, having previously served as the linebackers coach at the University of Michigan and Boston College.

Campanile is known for his aggressive and innovative defensive schemes, and his ability to develop young talent. His track record of success at the college level has made him a highly sought-after coaching prospect in the NFL, and the Jaguars are thrilled to have him on board.

In a statement, Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer expressed his excitement about Campanile joining the coaching staff, stating that he believes Campanile will be instrumental in helping the team take their defense to the next level.

Jaguars fans can look forward to seeing a more aggressive and dominant defense under Campanile’s leadership, as he works to mold the unit into one of the top defenses in the league. With his proven track record of success, the Jaguars are hopeful that Campanile will help lead the team to success in the upcoming season.

  • Jaguars Hire Anthony Campanile as Defensive Coordinator

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars have their new defensive leader.

Anthony Campanile, a 19-year coaching veteran who worked with one of the NFL’s top defenses in 2024, has been named the Jaguars’ new defensive coordinator.

The team announced Campanile’s hiring Thursday.

Campanile, 42, spent the 2024 season with the Green Bay Packers as their linebackers coach and defensive run-game coordinator. The Packers ranked seventh in the NFL in ’24 in run defense at 99.35 yards per game and third in the NFL at 4.0 yards per attempt allowed.

The Packers, an NFC Wild-Card team with an 11-6 record in 2024, ranked sixth in the NFL in points allowed in ’24 (19.9) and fifth in yards allowed (314.5).

Campanile, who played collegiately at Rutgers, will enter his sixth NFL season in 2025. He spent 2020-2023 as the Miami Dolphins’ linebackers coach.

Campanile coached eight seasons collegiately: Michigan (linebackers, 2019); Boston College (co-defensive coordinator/defensive backs, 2018; defensive backs, 2016–2017); Rutgers (wide receivers, 2015; tight ends, 2013-2014; defensive assistant, 2012-2013).

A native of Fairlawn, N.J., Campanile coached linebackers at Fairlawn High School in 2006 and was the defensive coordinator at Don Bosco (N.J.) Prep in 2007-2009 and the offensive coordinator at Don Bosco in 2010-2011.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have announced the hiring of Anthony Campanile as their new defensive coordinator. Campanile comes to the Jaguars with a wealth of experience, having previously served as the linebackers coach at the University of Michigan.

Head coach Urban Meyer expressed his excitement about bringing Campanile on board, stating that he believes Campanile’s defensive expertise and leadership skills will be instrumental in helping the Jaguars improve on that side of the ball.

Campanile is known for his aggressive and innovative defensive schemes, and his ability to develop young talent. With the Jaguars looking to turn things around after a disappointing season, Campanile’s hiring is seen as a step in the right direction.

Fans are eager to see how Campanile’s influence will impact the Jaguars’ defense in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates as the team prepares for the 2022 NFL season.
