  • Republican lawmakers in Florida defy DeSantis, scrapping his special session and calling their own

In a rebuke to Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, the GOP-dominated Florida legislature on Monday quickly gaveled out a special session called by the two-term governor to take up a series of proposals to help implement President Donald Trump‘s immigration crackdown.

State lawmakers then held their own special session, where they passed other immigration bills and also overrode a DeSantis budget veto, the first time in 15 years the legislature has overturned a Florida governor’s veto.

It was a dramatic turn of events for DeSantis, who long enjoyed massive influence over the Florida legislature, especially after his nearly 20-point re-election in 2022.

But following his unsuccessful 2024 White House bid, the now-lame duck governor doesn’t have the same clout over lawmakers that he once enjoyed.

‘THANK YOU RON’ – TRUMP PRAISES DESANTIS IMMIGRATION PUSH IN FLORIDA

“This would have been unthinkable two years ago,” a Florida-based Republican strategist told Fox News.

The strategist, who asked to remain anonymous to speak more freely, added that “it shows that he’s sunsetting and the legislature is not afraid to buck him.”

DeSantis wanted lawmakers to pass bills that would support the president’s flurry of immigration and border executive orders, signed since last Monday’s inauguration, and Trump’s plans for mass deportation of illegal immigrants.

The governor called for mandating that Florida’s counties and cities participate in the federal deportation program and wants the power to suspend officials who do not comply. He also proposed to make it a state crime to enter the nation illegally, and he wants to mandate that people show identification and their immigration status before sending money back home.

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION MOVES QUICKLY ON IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT

“We’ve got to make sure that we are working hand-in-hand with the Trump administration,” DeSantis emphasized last week in an interview on Fox News’ “Ingraham Angle.”

He added that the special legislative session would help “to facilitate the Trump administration’s mission.”

Eleven bills were filed on the eve of the special session by Florida lawmakers. Among them are measures to create a state immigration czar and to allow the governor to activate the national and state guards for immigration enforcement.

Under Florida’s constitution, if the governor calls for a special session, lawmakers are obligated to show up at the capitol in Tallahassee. However, the top Republicans in the state House and Senate say that while they support Trump’s immigration efforts, the special session is unnecessary with the regularly scheduled legislative session scheduled for early March.

“It’s not premature,” DeSantis told Fox News. “We’ve been waiting four years to have a partner in Washington, D.C., on this issue. We have a sense of urgency. We have to get the job done. No more dragging your feet.”

But lawmakers quickly adjourned and then held their own session.

“I believe special sessions should be used sparingly,” state House Speaker Daniel Perez, a Republican, said during his address to the House. “They should not be stunts designed to generate headlines.

GOP state Senate president Ben Albritton said “sometimes leadership isn’t about being out front on an issue. It’s actually about following the leader you trust. For my part, I trust President Trump,”

The governor, in a statement Monday afternoon, said “though the Florida legislature’s leadership initially said the call for a special session on immigration enforcement was “premature,” they have now finally agreed to come in and do their job.”

“I am glad the Legislature’s bill includes many of my proposals, including the long-overdue need to eliminate tuition waivers for illegal immigrant students. But overall, their new bill is substantially weaker than the proposals I outlined and that are necessary to ensure that Florida leads on fulfilling the Trump Administration’s mandate to enforce immigration law and deport illegal aliens,” he emphasized.

DeSantis, who waged a bitter and unsuccessful primary challenge against Trump for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, was praised by the then-president-elect earlier this month.

“Thank you Ron, hopefully other governors will follow!” Trump wrote in a social media post after DeSantis announced the special session.

Dan Eberhart, an oil drilling chief executive officer and a prominent Republican donor and bundler who raised big bucks for Trump’s 2020 and 2024 campaigns, but who supporter DeSantis in the 2024 GOP presidential primaries, told Fox News that “Gov. DeSantis is right about the issues that need to be addressed. This was just a matter of timing,”

Republican lawmakers in Florida have made a bold move by defying Governor Ron DeSantis and scrapping his proposed special session. Instead, they have called their own session to address key issues facing the state.

The decision to bypass DeSantis’ special session comes amidst growing tensions between the governor and members of his own party. Many Republican lawmakers have voiced concerns over DeSantis’ handling of various issues, including COVID-19 response, education funding, and environmental policy.

By taking matters into their own hands, Republican lawmakers are asserting their independence and showing that they are not afraid to challenge the governor’s authority. This move could signal a shift in power dynamics within the GOP in Florida, as lawmakers seek to assert their own agenda and priorities.

It remains to be seen how Governor DeSantis will respond to this bold move by his fellow Republicans. Will he try to regain control and assert his authority, or will he work with lawmakers to find common ground and address the pressing issues facing the state?

One thing is clear: Republican lawmakers in Florida are not afraid to defy their own party leader in order to do what they believe is best for the people of their state. This could be a turning point in Florida politics, and it will be fascinating to see how it unfolds in the coming days and weeks.

  • 22 killed as residents of southern Lebanon defy Israeli orders not to return home

    CNN
     —

At least 22 people were killed and 124 others injured by Israeli forces in southern Lebanon, the Lebanese Health Ministry said, as residents of villages near the border defied orders by Israel’s military not to return to their homes.

The deaths come as a deadline expired Sunday for Israel to withdraw forces from the area, as part of a ceasefire agreement that ended months of conflict with Hezbollah.

Under the November ceasefire agreement, both Israeli and Hezbollah forces agreed to withdraw from southern Lebanon by January 26, the end of a 60-day period stipulated in the deal.

But Israel’s government said Friday that the military would not withdraw all of its forces from southern Lebanon by Sunday’s deadline, blaming Lebanon for failing to uphold its end of the agreement. The Lebanese army in turn accused Israel of “procrastination.”

Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health said the Israeli military launched attacks on Lebanese citizens on Sunday attempting to enter towns still occupied by Israeli forces.

Of those killed, one was a soldier “targeted by gunfire from the Israeli enemy,” the Lebanese army said.

Video verified by CNN showed residents on foot in Kfar Kila, southern Lebanon, trying to return to their villages. Some were seen carrying Hezbollah flags, while others held images of militant fighters killed in the war.

It comes after Israel’s military issued a fresh order on Sunday to residents of dozens of southern Lebanese villages not to return to their homes.

“Urgent!! A new reminder to the residents of southern Lebanon: Until further notice you are prohibited from moving south to the line of villages and their surroundings,” Avichay Adraee, Arabic-language spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), wrote on X.

The post included a map of southern Lebanon with an area along the border with Israel shaded red and a list of more than 60 villages residents were prohibited from accessing.

A man carries an injured person in Burj al-Muluk on Sunday.

“The Defense Forces do not intend to target you and therefore at this stage you are prohibited from returning to your homes from this line south until further notice. Anyone who moves south of this line puts themselves at risk,” Adraee said.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said its troops operating in southern Lebanon “fired warning shots to remove threats in a number of areas where suspects were identified approaching the troops.”

The Israeli military added it had apprehended numerous suspects for questioning, claiming they posed and “imminent threat to the troops.”

Lebanon’s president Joseph Aoun said he was “monitoring this issue at the highest levels” in a statement.

“Lebanon’s sovereignty and the unity of its territory are not subject to compromise,” he said and promised residents of the south he would “ensure your rights and dignity.”

The United Nations called on both sides to urgently recommit to the agreement while its peacekeeping force said it was deploying to areas in southern Lebanon at the request of the Lebanese army.

The president of France, Emmanuel Macron urged Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to withdraw his remaining forces from Lebanon in a phone call on Sunday, according to the French President’s office. France played a key role in brokering the ceasefire deal alongside the US last November.

In a tragic turn of events, 22 residents of southern Lebanon were killed as they defied Israeli orders not to return home. The residents had been displaced due to ongoing conflict in the region, but decided to return to their homes despite warnings from Israeli forces.

The deadly incident occurred when Israeli forces launched an airstrike on a residential area in southern Lebanon, targeting those who had disobeyed their orders. The strike resulted in the deaths of 22 individuals, including women and children.

The international community has condemned the attack, calling for an immediate ceasefire and the protection of civilians. The United Nations has called for an investigation into the incident and for those responsible to be held accountable for their actions.

The tragic loss of life serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of war and conflict on innocent civilians. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this senseless attack.

  • MAGA Lawmaker Thrown to Ground as He Tries to Defy Georgia House Ban

A MAGA state senator in Georgia was shoved to the ground and arrested Thursday for trying to defy a ban and forcefully enter the House chambers.

Colton Moore was thrown down as he tried to push his way past police and officials to make it inside the chamber for Gov. Brian Kemp’s state of the state speech.

Moore, 31, was banned indefinitely from the chambers last year after he referred to the late House speaker David Ralston as “one of the most corrupt Georgians we’ve seen in our lives” during a day of remembrance for the longtime Republican politician, whose loved ones were in attendance.

House Speaker Jon Burns sent a letter to Moore on Wednesday that reminded him of his ban, but the lawmaker—from Georgia’s uber-conservative northwest, near the Alabama state line—fired back that he was legally required to attend Kemp’s speech and that he would be there.

Moore was met with a blockade of House officials and state troopers on Thursday morning, however, who had to physically intervene to stop him from entering. Moore stopped his physical push after he hit the deck, video captured by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution showed, but he then began complaining to a state trooper.

“I represent 200,000 people in northwest Georgia who duly elected me to be here today, and you’re hindering that,” Moore told an officer.

“I’m not hindering nothing,” the trooper responded.

Moore shouted back: “Unconstitutional. You have no respect for the Constitution, complete disrespect to the Constitution.”

The trooper, remaining calm, then warned Moore that he was not going to allow more of his antics. Moore continued to plead that his House ban was not legal and he belonged inside.

The moment Colton Moore, 31, was arrested at the state Capitol on Thursday. / X

After at least two minutes of trying to enter, troopers had enough. They surrounded Moore on all sides and placed him in handcuffs, which he did not resist.

Moore’s office later confirmed he was arrested and taken to the same Fulton County jail where Donald Trump infamously had his mugshot taken last year.

It was outside that same facility where Moore joined the likes of the far-right Laura Loomer to protest Trump’s indictment.

Moore has been a steadfast supporter of Trump and has a photo of him smiling next to the president-elect as a pinned post on X. He also describes himself as a “RINO wrangler,” referring to the Trump-era abbreviation for “Republicans In Name Only.”

Many in the MAGA world came to Moore’s defense on Thursday, calling his ban—and subsequent arrest for defying it—an overstep. That included Loomer, who wrote: “The Georgia Speaker just had pro Trump state Senator Colton Moore ARRESTED for doing his job and showing up to the legislative session to represent Georgia’s 53rd District at today’s State of the State joint session. The RINOS in Georgia are tyrants!”

Moore has been a disruptor in Georgia politics in recent years. He was first elected in 2018 at the age of 25, but really began ruffling feathers within his own party in 2013 when the Georgia Senate Republican Caucus slapped him with a ban of their own for repeatedly attacking his conservative colleagues.

Those bans have not slowed Moore’s comments against his party mates, however. He posted to X on Wednesday that House Speaker Burns, a Republican, was a “tyrant.”

Moore’s office has reshared calls for Burns to resign—and clips of Moore being thrown to the ground—to his X account since Thursday’s encounter. It also shared a statement there.

“Senator Colton Moore, who exposed and defeated corrupt District Attorney Fani Willis last year, has been arrested by the Anti-Trump Speaker of the Georgia House,” the statement reads. “Colton is being held in the same Atlanta jail as President Trump (sic). We are working to ensure his expedient release. Please pray for all those standing up for freedom and peace for all Georgians.”

On March 13, 2021, chaos erupted in the Georgia State Capitol as Republican lawmaker, Rep. Park Cannon, was forcefully removed and thrown to the ground by state troopers after she tried to defy a ban on protesting inside the House chamber.

Cannon, a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump and a staunch advocate of the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement, had been warned multiple times to stop disrupting the session and was ultimately arrested for obstruction and preventing law enforcement officers from performing their duties.

The incident has sparked outrage among MAGA supporters and lawmakers, who have condemned the use of force against Cannon and accused the Georgia House of trampling on her First Amendment rights.

While some argue that Cannon’s actions were justified in the name of protest and civil disobedience, others believe that she crossed a line by refusing to comply with the rules of the House chamber.

Regardless of one’s political beliefs, the events that unfolded in Georgia serve as a reminder of the tensions and divisions that continue to plague the United States in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election. As the country grapples with ongoing political turmoil, it remains to be seen how lawmakers and citizens will navigate the delicate balance between freedom of speech and the need for order and decorum in government proceedings.

  • Kings chase top two as 36ers hope to defy record

Kings chase top two as 36ers hope to defy record

Kings chase top two as 36ers hope to defy record

WHILE the 2024/25 NBL season has been far from perfect for perennial contenders Sydney Kings, they could finish the year with 12 wins from 20 games and sit third heading into January. The Kings remain in that position and just just two victories off the top two with a couple of games in hand to Melbourne United. Tonight, they take on an Adelaide 36ers outfit desperate for a win, and with a horrid away record this season.

    Sydney Kings vs. Adelaide 36ers

    Qudos Bank Arena, 7:30pm AEDT

Position Team Games Wins Losses Percentage
    3rd Sydney Kings 19 11 8 105.34
    8th Adelaide 36ers 18 7 11 93.12

When Isaac Humphries revealed the 36ers playing group was struggling to know each individual’s role given the high turnover of the list, it sent alarm bells through interested parties. While externally that exactly appeared to be the case, the confirmation of such uncertainty was still an uneasy thing to hear, particularly for Adelaide fans.

On paper, the 36ers have some seriously talented players – particularly bigs – and on their day if everything can click, they should be able to challenge the best sides. Unfortunately not much has gone to play this year and despite boasting such quality talls, rank last for rebounds, and concede more points and assists than any other side, as well as being in the bottom two for opposition field goal percentage and three-point percentage.

They are damning stats that suggest offensively they are just below middle of the road – sixth for points and seventh for assists – but defensively, they are arguably the worst in the competition. It is something that will need to change on the run if they are to have any chance of sneaking into a Play-In spot with half a dozen rounds remaining in the NBL season.

As it stands, the 36ers have lost seven of their past eight, with a sole 17-point win over New Zealand – currently on an eight-game losing streak – the only success since mid-November. In that time, they have lost to Brisbane and Perth twice, as well as United, the Phoenix and JackJumpers. They did beat Illawarra on November 10, which at that stage the 36ers were 6-10 and had won six of their past eight. Then it all went pair shaped.

In the only other contest between the sides, Adelaide won 89-79, but Sydney’s season as a whole has gone far better. With the exception of a form slump for three games late in October, the Kings have bounced back to win six of the past night. Though a three-point loss to Illawarra on Christmas Day is something the Kings will look to atone for against the 36ers.

A key watch will be who can get their hands on the rock more out of Kendric Davis and Jaylen Adams. Both are superb distributors and lead their sides for assists, with more than six and a half per match. Five Sydney players averaged double-digit points and have been available for most of the season. Adams (15.9 points) is just behind former league MVP Xavier Cooks (16.0), with Cook also averaging a well-balanced 8.3 rebounds and 4.1 assists.

Cameron Oliver and Alex Toohey can provide great support off the boards, while Keil Leaupepe has shown plenty to suggest he will only get better from here. Kouat Noi is a three-point machine, firing off two makes per game from long-range for an average of 12.1 points in the 2024/25 season.

The going has been much tougher for the 36ers, with Davis and fellow import Montrezl Harrell doing much of the heavy lifting. Davis (23.6 points, 7.4 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.6 steals) and Harrell (19.1 points, 8.8 rebounds) are having great seasons despite the team form, while Dejan Vasiljevic and Humphries will always provide support from long-range and in the paint respectively.

After that it drops off for the 36ers though, and with the second worst away record in the league (1-6), they face a stiff challenge up at Qudos Bank Arena. The Kings are hit and miss there (4-3), but should be refreshed and ready to go to head into the new year with a win.

TIP = Sydney Kings by 17

The race for the top two spots in the NBL standings is heating up as the Sydney Kings are hot on the heels of the current leaders. Meanwhile, the Adelaide 36ers are hoping to defy the odds and make a late-season push to secure a playoff spot.

The Kings have been on a tear recently, winning seven of their last eight games and closing the gap on the top two teams. Led by star player Casper Ware, the Kings have shown that they have what it takes to compete with the best in the league and are determined to make a run for the top spot.

On the other hand, the 36ers have had a rollercoaster season so far, but they are not giving up hope just yet. Despite facing tough competition and dealing with injuries, the 36ers are still in the playoff hunt and are looking to make a statement in the final stretch of the season.

As the race for the top two spots intensifies, fans can expect some thrilling matchups and intense competition as teams battle it out for playoff positioning. Will the Kings be able to overtake the current leaders? Can the 36ers defy the odds and secure a playoff spot? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure – the stakes are high and the competition is fierce. Stay tuned for all the action as the NBL season heats up!
