  • Deitz looks to emerging stars in ground-breaking West Indies-Bangladesh series

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A new chapter in Caribbean cricket history is set to unfold as the West Indies Women’s cricket team gears up to host Bangladesh in their inaugural bilateral white-ball series on Caribbean soil.

Scheduled from January 19 to 31 at Warner Park, St. Kitts, the tour promises to showcase emerging talent, refine strategies, and build momentum for critical upcoming ICC tournaments.

Head coach Shane Deitz, brimming with anticipation, emphasized the significance of this historic series as a platform for both individual brilliance and team cohesion.

    A historic showdown

This ground-breaking series comprises three CG United One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and three T20 Internationals (T20Is). It not only marks the first bilateral clash between the West Indies Women and Bangladesh but also heralds Bangladesh’s maiden white-ball tour of the Caribbean.

Speaking about the series, Deitz highlighted its importance as a springboard for the team’s future. “It’s crucial to get some combinations going. A few players are playing for positions too, so we need them to put their hands up. There are great opportunities for players here,” he said.

Reflecting on the team’s recent tour of India, Deitz acknowledged the challenges faced and identified key areas for improvement. “We struggled a bit in India, especially during the powerplays, both with bat and ball,” he noted. “That’s a big focus for us in this series. We want to get off to a good start and drive the game from there.”

He further emphasized the need for robust combinations, stating, “Performing well under pressure and building consistency with bat and ball is essential. This series is an opportunity to bounce back and set a strong foundation for the qualifiers.”

    VADODARA, India (CMC):

West Indies Women head coach Shane Deitz has expressed his disappointment with the bowling performance of the regional team following two heavy losses to India in their ongoing One Day International series.

In the opening match on Sunday, India racked up 314 for nine from their 50 overs, their second highest total at home in a ODI, on their way to handing West Indies their worst ODI defeat by an embarrassing 211-runs.

India returned on Tuesday to amass 358 for five, their joint-highest ODI score, to win by 115 runs and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Speaking during a post-match press conference, Deitz conceded that the bowling in the two ODIs was below par.

“[Our bowling] has been very disappointing. The last few months leading up to the World Cup, bowling was a real strength of ours.

“We haven’t been able to bowl consistent lines and lengths or bowl to a field and on the good wickets here with fast outfields, you’ve got to be able to cut off one side of the field and be able to bowl to a field. We haven’t been able to do that,” Deitz explained.

“We’ve been leaking two bad balls an over going for four minimum and the Indian team have batted really well, punished anything we’ve missed.

“Obviously, Chinelle Henry is our key fast bowler and she’s been out injured which has been a big miss for us. We haven’t been able to get wickets in the power play,” he added.

Despite having already lost the series, Deitz said it was important that the West Indies, who are currently ranked ninth in the ICC Women’s Championship table, finish the series strongly.

He pointed out that there were still valuable points at stake, with only the top six teams guaranteed a place at the 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup scheduled for August to September in India.

“We’ve got one more game so it’s a chance for us the players to step up and get a win.

“Automatic qualification to the World Cup has got to be our goal,” Deitz said.

Coach Deitz Calls for Improved Bowling Performance

Coach Deitz is not satisfied with the performance of the bowling team and is calling for improvement. The team has been struggling in recent matches, failing to meet the high standards set by Coach Deitz.

In a recent team meeting, Coach Deitz emphasized the importance of focus, consistency, and teamwork in order to achieve success on the lanes. He stressed the need for each player to step up their game and work together to reach their full potential.

“We have a talented group of bowlers, but we need to work harder and smarter in order to compete at the highest level,” said Coach Deitz. “We need to be more disciplined in our approach and execute our shots with precision.”

The team has responded positively to Coach Deitz’s call for improvement and is committed to putting in the extra effort needed to turn their season around. They are focused on practicing with purpose and pushing each other to do better in every match.

As they prepare for their next competition, Coach Deitz is confident that the team will rise to the challenge and deliver a much-improved performance. With his guidance and the team’s dedication, they are determined to show the bowling world what they are capable of.

Stay tuned for updates on the team’s progress as they work towards achieving their goals under Coach Deitz’s leadership.
