Irish-qualified Delap backed to make England mark

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has tipped Ipswich forward Liam Delap to break into the England senior squad.

The 21-year-old striker, son of former Republic of Ireland international Rory Delap, is Irish-qualified and has already been courted by the Boys in Green.

Delap senior won eight caps for Ireland having qualified through his Donegal father and mother from Leitrim.

Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has spoken of his interest in the striker, who has already scored six Premier League goals this season, while his assistant John O’Shea spoke to the player earlier this year.

“It’s always the player who decides who he wants to play for and I’m not the right person to ask if he’s eligible or not,” Hallgrimsson said in October.

“Someone else can probably answer that better. In the end it’s always up to the player himself.”

Delap has represented England from U16 right through to U21 level and Chelsea manager Maresca, who worked with him during his time as U21 coach at Manchester City, is tipping the frontman to make the step up with the Three Lions at senior level.

“Liam is a fantastic player, and also for his age,” said Maresca, who has been linked with a January swoop for the striker.

“I think we spent one year together and I think he scored 22, 24 goals and he is a very good striker.

“In England they have many like him and they have many good players, good strikers and he’s working hard off the ball, on the ball, he understands the game and can score goals.

“And also because of his age, I think he can be an important player for England.”

Irish-qualified Delap backed to make England mark

Manchester City’s rising star, Liam Delap, has been making waves in the football world with his impressive performances. Despite being eligible to play for Ireland, the 18-year-old striker has been backed to make his mark on the England national team.

Delap, who is the son of former Stoke City player Rory Delap, has shown great potential with his strength, speed, and goal-scoring ability. His performances for Manchester City’s youth teams and the first team have caught the attention of many, including England manager Gareth Southgate.

With England’s striking options currently limited, Delap could be the answer to their goal-scoring woes. His youth and enthusiasm could inject some much-needed energy into the team, and his ability to find the back of the net could make him a valuable asset for the Three Lions.

While Delap’s allegiance to Ireland is still a possibility, many believe that his future lies with England. With the backing of fans and pundits alike, it won’t be long before we see Delap donning the white jersey and making his mark on the international stage.

Chelsea have two Premier League forwards in their sights ahead of the January transfer window.

Enzo Maresca has quickly won Chelsea fans over since succeeding Mauricio Pochettino in the Stamford Bridge hot seat, with the Blues surpassing expectations in the first half of the Premier League campaign.

But having spent in the region of £220million on summer signings, the west London outfit are preparing to enter the transfer market once again with a view to boosting their title hopes in the second half of the season.

A resurgent Nicolas Jackson has started all but one of Chelsea’s opening 17 league matches this term and the club are keen to ease the Senegalese’s workload by strengthening up front.

According to talkSPORT, Ipswich’s Liam Delap, 21, and Brighton’s Evan Ferguson, 20, find themselves at the top of Chelsea’s shortlist of attacking targets, though a deal for either player will likely prove difficult next month.

It’s claimed Chelsea have sent scouts to watch Delap on multiple occasions, with the England Under-21 international firing on all cylinders across an eye-catching debut season at Portman Road.

A number of clubs have been credited with an interest in Delap in recent weeks, including Manchester City, who made sure to include a buy-back option for the youngster in their summer deal with Ipswich.

The report states that Ferguson – who is currently sidelined with an ankle injury – remains a player firmly on Chelsea’s radar, but Brighton are said to be demanding a fee of between £80-100m for the Republic of Ireland man.

Ferguson, who has also been linked with the likes of Manchester United, Leicester and West Ham, is tied into a contract at the Amex Stadium until 2029.

Recent reports suggested Ferguson could be set for a loan move in January, with the striker managing just one goal in all competitions this season for the Seagulls.

Responding to the speculation, Fabian Hurzeler insisted he was ‘really happy’ to have Ferguson in his ranks but eager to ‘find the right solution’ for the Irishman.

‘At first, I think he needs to get back on the pitch. The rumours, I won’t discuss them in public,’ the Brighton head coach said ahead of his side’s trip to Aston Villa.

‘I think it’s very important the player knows our idea, that we know the idea from the player and then it’s most important to be honest with each other, to find the right solution for the club and in the end also for the player.

‘I’m really happy that Evan is in our squad and I’m hoping that he will be back on the pitch as soon as possible.’

According to recent reports, Chelsea is reportedly eyeing an £80m Premier League striker as an alternative to signing Liam Delap from Manchester City. The Blues are said to be interested in bolstering their attacking options in the upcoming transfer window and have identified the unnamed striker as a potential target.

Delap, who is highly rated at City, has been linked with a move to Chelsea in recent weeks. However, it appears that the London club is exploring other options as they look to add more firepower to their squad.

The £80m striker is said to be a proven goal scorer in the Premier League and could provide Chelsea with the cutting edge they need to challenge for major honours next season. The Blues are reportedly willing to splash the cash to secure his signature and are confident that he would be a valuable addition to their squad.

It remains to be seen whether Chelsea will pursue a deal for the £80m striker or if they will continue to pursue a move for Delap. Either way, it looks like the Blues are determined to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new season. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing transfer story.

  • Liam Delap can become ‘an important player for England’ – Enzo Maresca

Liam Delap can become ‘an important player for England’ – Enzo Maresca

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca believes Ipswich striker Liam Delap, who he coached in Manchester City’s academy, can become “an important player for England”.

The 21-year-old has been one of the Tractor Boys’ standout players on their return to the Premier League, scoring six goals to date in his first full season in the top flight.

Delap, son of former Premier League midfielder Rory Delap, joined Ipswich on a permanent transfer in the summer from Manchester City’s academy in a deal worth up to £20m.

“Liam is a fantastic player, and also for his age,” said Maresca. “I think we spent one year together and he scored [about] 22 to 24 goals. He is a very good striker.

“England have many good players, many good strikers [but] he’s working hard off the ball and on the ball, understands the game and can score goals. I think he can be an important player for England.”

Delap scored 35 goals in 36 games for City’s Under-21s and previously spent time on loan at Championship sides Stoke City, Preston North End and Hull City, before opting to leave City in the summer to gain consistent first-team football.

He is yet to make his national team debut but has played 10 times for England Under-21s, scoring twice after previously playing for every national age grade side.

The Tractor Boys, who sit 19th in Premier League and three points off safety, host Chelsea on Monday.

Former Manchester City and Italy midfielder Enzo Maresca believes that young striker Liam Delap has the potential to become “an important player for England” in the future.

Delap, son of former Stoke City and Derby County midfielder Rory Delap, has been making waves at Manchester City’s youth academy, impressing with his pace, physicality, and eye for goal.

Maresca, who worked with Delap during his time as a coach at Manchester City, has been impressed with the 18-year-old’s development and believes he has all the attributes to succeed at the highest level.

Speaking to reporters, Maresca said, “Liam is a very talented young player with a lot of potential. He has all the qualities to become an important player for England in the future. He is strong, quick, and has a great eye for goal. I have no doubt that with the right guidance and support, he can go on to achieve great things in his career.”

With England’s national team always on the lookout for young talent, Delap’s emergence as a top prospect is sure to catch the eye of manager Gareth Southgate. If he continues to progress at his current rate, it may not be long before we see him pulling on the Three Lions jersey and making a name for himself on the international stage.
