Congresswoman Sarah McBride ceremonially sworn in, in her home state of Delaware | The Latest from WDEL News
Nearly a month after taking office, Congresswoman Sarah McBride was ceremonially sworn in Tuesday night in Wilmington.
McBride took the oath of office which was administered by 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Tamika Montgomery-Reeves. Governor Matt Meyer and Attorney General Kathy Jennings also spoke during the event at Old Town Hall.
McBride said while she had been in office for a few weeks, “it didn’t feel right unless and until we came together as a Delaware family to formalize this privilege that I have to represent the greatest state in the House of Representatives.”
The ceremony came at the end of a day in which there was much confusion and concern over action take by President Donald Trump and the administration to freeze or potentially freeze federal funding to certain programs.
“I enter Congress at a moment of uncertainty and fear for so many in our country. A time that will test our constitution, our economy and our very compassion,” McBride said. “The events of the last 24 hours only reinforce the chaos and cruelty of this new administration as health care for one in four Americans, child care for millions of kids, and non-profit programs serving families across the country have been thrust into confusion and risk. It is unacceptable and unconscionable.”
“And while it is understandable to be overwhelmed by our politics, to search foe easy answers or comforting solutions, if we are to truly face these challenges, then we must face up to the circumstances that gave rise to the current state of our politics,” McBride continued.
“Here in Delaware, we understand the necessity of collaboration, not out of some empty belief in compromise-for-compromise sake, but because we know you cannot have a diverse democracy if we lose our capacity to have conversations across difference and disagreement, if dissent is disallowed, if we stop seeing one another as people.”

McBride, who won her election in November, took the oath of office with pride and determination, vowing to represent the people of Delaware with integrity and dedication.

Ex-Naval aircraft carrier will travel down Delaware Bay Thursday
The ex-USS John F. Kennedy, a decommissioned U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, will travel down the Delaware Bay Thursday on its way to Texas for dismantling.
The ship left the Navy Yard in Philadelphia around 10 a.m. Thursday and is expected to reach the Delaware Bay around 1:30 p.m., roughly. Delawareans can best view it from Fox Point State Park or Battery Park in New Castle.
The John F. Kennedy, commissioned in 1968, was the first to be named for the 35th President of the United States and the last “conventionally powered” aircraft carrier built by the Navy, a Naval Sea Systems news release said.
The ship had 18 deployments during a period of escalating tension in the Middle East and North Africa, and often while under the surveillance of Soviet ships, the release said.

More recently, it was used for air security along the Mid-Atlantic after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
In 2002, it was deployed in support of Operations Anaconda and Enduring Freedom, and in 2004, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, the release said. Before being removed from service in 2007, the ship served as a training platform.

Former USS John F. Kennedy towed down Delaware River as aircraft carrier begins journey out of Philadelphia Navy Yard
PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — The decommissioned aircraft carrier, formerly named after President John F. Kennedy, has begun its journey as it heads south from the Philadelphia Navy Yard to the scrapyard.
Towboats began towing the vessel down the Delaware River around 9:30 a.m. on Thursday to begin the journey to Brownsville, Texas.
The large ship will be towed through the Delaware River, through the Delaware Bay and into the Atlantic Ocean. Once it reaches the Gulf Coast of Texas, crews will dismantle the Kennedy.
The move to Texas was pushed back after a delay on Wednesday.
Ray Staley and Michael Marchesse served onboard from 1971 to 1973 – just two kids from Norristown.
“We met in the ship’s library and we found out we had mutual friends, and lived five miles from each other. We’ve been friends for 52 years,” said Michael Marchesse of Norristown.
In Chester, the veterans were joined by dozens of other onlookers who were watching as the aircraft carrier passed by.
Some of them were reminded of their time in the Navy.
“No regrets at all, a wonderful experience. Lucked out,” said Ray Staley of Royersford.
The aircraft carrier conducted US Navy missions worldwide during its 39 years of service.
The ship conducted 18 deployments including to the Mediterranean, Tyrrhenian, Ionian, Ligurian, Aegean and Adriatic seas, during a period of escalating tension in the Middle East and North Africa, often while under the surveillance of Soviet ships.
It was the Navy’s final conventionally-powered aircraft carrier before switching to nuclear power.
“Big John,” as it was affectionately nicknamed, was decommissioned in 2007 and has been in Philadelphia ever since.
A new aircraft carrier named after JFK will enter service later this year.

Kennedy served in the United States Navy for over 30 years before being decommissioned in 2007. Since then, it has been docked at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, awaiting its fate.
As the aircraft carrier was slowly towed down the river, crowds gathered to catch a glimpse of this historic moment. Many former crew members and veterans of the USS John F. Kennedy were also in attendance, bidding farewell to the ship that had been such a significant part of their lives.
The journey of the USS John F. Kennedy out of Philadelphia marks the end of an era, but also serves as a reminder of the important role that aircraft carriers play in the defense of our nation. As the massive vessel makes its way to its final destination, we honor its service and the men and women who served aboard it.

Can DeSean Jackson have same effect at Delaware State as Deion Sanders?
PHILADELPHIA − As a wide receiver, DeSean Jackson had few peers. The former Eagle could run past just about every cornerback who tried covering him one-on-one.
“He was one of a kind,” current Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown said.
But as a coach?
Delaware State is about to find out after recently hiring Jackson. Jackson, 38, finished up a 15-year NFL career in 2022, which included two stints with the Eagles from 2008 as their second-round pick through 2013 and again from 2019-20.
Jackson ranks third in Eagles history in receiving yards with 6,512, and he is the NFL record-holder for the most 60-plus- and 80-plus-yard catches. But Jackson’s only coaching experience at any level came this past fall as the wide receivers coach and punt return specialist at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California.
Yet current Eagles players said DSU hiring Jackson is a great move. Jackson will be officially introduced as the Hornets‘ head coach on Jan. 8 at the university’s Athletic Hall of Fame in the MLK Student Center.
No doubt, that press conference, not to mention practically every move Jackson makes, will garner plenty of interest. At least much more interest than a football program would warrant with just one winning season in 17 years and a 2-21 record under Jackson’s predecessor, Lee Hull.
How DeSean Jackson can overcome limited NIL money
But there’s another aspect to Jackson’s hiring that mirrors a trend among historically Black colleges and universities in hiring former NFL stars with limited coaching experience. It’s why Norfolk State, a fellow MEAC school, hired Jackson’s teammate in Michael Vick last month.
This after former Pro Bowl running back Eddie George was hired at Tennessee State in 2021. George led the Tigers to the FCS playoffs this season and was named Big South/Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year.
And that followed perhaps the poster child for NFL stars going to HBCUs in Deion Sanders, who coached at Jackson State from 2020-22. Sanders, known as “Coach Prime,” quickly improved from 4-3 in his first season shortened by COVID-19 to 11-2 in 2021 and 12-1 in 2022 before landing a job at Colorado in 2023.
“College football is so different now,” said Eagles cornerback Isaiah Rodgers, who describes one of his career highlights as intercepting a pass intended for Jackson in 2022.
“A lot of kids aren’t just signing with schools that they feel like want them,” Rodgers added. “They’re signing with schools that either have a big name or a great coach like the Deion Sanderses and things like that. So I think by bringing those NFL guys into those programs can help turn them around.”
That’s especially true for HBCUs that don’t have the NIL money to offer recruits − and that’s compared with other FCS programs, and it’s nowhere close to the NIL money FBS programs can offer.
So by going with a big-name NFL star like Jackson, Delaware State might be able to compensate for that difference.
That might already be the case as Michigan State wide receiver Antonio Gates Jr., a four-star recruit and the son of the former Pro Bowl tight end by the same name, is transferring to DSU.
Gates played only 2 games last season, with 4 catches for 49 yards after playing in 12 games as a freshman in 2023. So he would have three years of eligibility remaining.
DESEAN TO DSU:Eagles great DeSean Jackson explains why he is taking over as Delaware State head coach
“I think it’s great for those (NFL) guys to go back and get those opportunities to help the guys who are coming up and lead them in the right direction,” Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith said. “(Jackson) can show them how to do things the right way, show them what it takes to be a pro.
“I’m pretty sure those guys have heard a lot about him and seen him play. You just want to be around those types of guys and pick their brains.”
Added Eagles cornerback Darius Slay: “You got a trend going on, and I’m loving it. Those guys, after playing, they don’t do anything but sit around. They’re able to find a way to stay around football and end up being head coaches. They’re real inspirational people. I think they can do a great job inspiring kids.
“Kids seem to trust and believe in people that did it before, that know what it takes to get to the NFL.”
Jackson is certainly proof of that.
As an undersized wide receiver, Jackson relied on his speed to become a prolific wide receiver. Jackson set an Eagles rookie record with 912 yards receiving in 2008. The record stood until Smith beat it by 4 yards in 2021.
Jackson had his best season as a receiver in 2013, with Vick as the Eagles’ quarterback. Jackson had career highs in receptions with 82 and yards with 1,332 that year.
But former Eagles coach Chip Kelly released Jackson the following spring after an nj.com story falsely linked Jackson to gangs in Los Angeles. Jackson, however, wasn’t always the best teammate. He was fined and suspended for a game by former Eagles coach Andy Reid in 2011 for oversleeping on a game day.
Jackson was also fined by the Eagles in the summer of 2020 for reposting anti-Semitic comments on social media. Jackson apologized.
Learning from mistakes is another lesson Jackson can impart to his players.
DeSean Jackson can teach the tricks of the trade
On the field, Smith admired the way Jackson instilled fear into opposing cornerbacks.
“He ran a hell of a blaze-out,” Smith said. “He was just so fast. He’d be running vertical, and DBs would just be getting (turned around). That was one of the routes I loved watching the most because you can see how scared the DBs were of him just running by them.”
Brown, however, said he didn’t try to emulate Jackson because they’re different kinds of receivers.
“You have to be really fast to look up to a guy like that,” Brown said. When reminded that Brown is fast, he responded: “Yeah, but he’s really, really fast.”
Slay knew all about Jackson, going against him in 2016 when Slay was with the Lions and Jackson was with Washington. Slay also covered Jackson in 2017 when Jackson was with Tampa Bay. Slay was traded to the Eagles in 2020 in Jackson’s final season in Philly.
Slay and the Eagles didn’t play against Jackson on his final three teams − the Rams, Raiders and Ravens in 2021 and 2022.
In the two games against Slay, Jackson had a total of nine catches for 76 yards. Slay said his strategy for covering Jackson was simple.
“Don’t let him get behind me because it can get real ugly real quick,” he said. Then Slay added with a sense of pride: “He never scored on me. He could have, maybe twice, but the quarterback missed him.”
While it’s true Jackson can’t coach speed, he can coach tricks of the trade, like moves to get the defensive back to turn the wrong way, or how to prepare for a game, that could benefit a college player.
And Jackson can assemble a staff with other former NFL players at other positions, and perhaps a former NFL assistant coach that he might have worked with during his career.
“That definitely pulls in kids because you want those coaches who played the game at a high level,” Rodgers said. “So knowing that you got Hall of Famers as your coach is going to make you want to sign with those schools.”
Then Rodgers added this, which ultimately is what Delaware State is trying to get from hiring Jackson: “You can really only go up from (2-21). There’s not too much further you can go down.
“I think it’s a good stepping-stone for DeSean, and I hope the best for him.”

Officials are urging residents to plan ahead, stay off the roads if conditions worsen, and look out for parking restrictions in snow emergency routes.

- Snow ends around 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
- There will be a very tight snowfall gradient across our area from less than 1″ in the Poconos to over 6″ in parts of Delaware and South Jersey.

Lou Muth has owned the business for 25 years and is used to preparing for winter weather.
How crews are preparing for Monday’s snowstorm
“The demand is obviously for snow, shovels, ice melt-and heat. Electric heaters, propane, anything to do with weather. The plumbing department is way up with pipes freezing, all that stuff,” said Muth.
Atlantic City leaders said they’re preparing for a worst-case scenario of 6 to 8 inches.
“The city of Atlantic City will have the proper staffing and equipment. We have been coordinating with the police our EMS crews, our ambulance people, the fire department,” said Atlantic City OEM Coordinator and Fire Chief Scott Evans.
Police have four-wheel drive and military surplus vehicles ready to go and plan to get the homeless to shelters.
“I want to ensure the residents of Atlantic City that the city is prepared,” said Atlantic City Marty Small Sr.

Former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson has been hired as the new football coach at Delaware State, the school announced Friday.
“The opportunity for me to help write another chapter here at DSU is a once-in-a-lifetime moment consistent with my journey as a young boy finding his way to manhood through mentorship, accountability, achievement, and discipline,” Jackson said in a statement. “If we build that kind of culture at Delaware State University, we will attract the right talent and radically change the trajectory of this program. I cannot wait to get started.”
Jackson is the second former NFL star to be hired at a MEAC school this month, joining Michael Vick at Norfolk State.
A source told ESPN’s Pete Thamel that it had always been a dream of Jackson’s to coach at a historically Black college or university. Jackson referenced that importance in his statement, saying the story of HBCUs “continues to be written and includes the elevation of HBCU scholars and scholar athletes in every field of human endeavor.”
Jackson and Vick join a growing list of former NFL standouts who have taken over HBCU programs in recent years. Deion Sanders had success at Jackson State before heading to Colorado, and Eddie George guided Tennessee State to the FCS playoffs this year.
Jackson will be introduced in a news conference Jan. 8. He is the first hire by athletic director Tony Tucker, who took over the role earlier this month.
“DeSean Jackson is a perfect fit for our institution — incredibly competitive, optimistic about the prospects for our collective future, and focused on the fundamentals of the institution: STUDENTS FIRST,” Tucker said in a statement.
Jackson, 38, replaces Lee Hull, who was dismissed earlier this month after two disappointing seasons, including a 1-11 showing this year.
The Hornets have not had a winning season since going 6-5 in 2012.
Jackson, who retired as a member of the Eagles after the 2023 season, made the Pro Bowl in three of his eight seasons with the team. He became the first player in NFL history to earn Pro Bowl honors at two positions — kick returner and wide receiver. He played 15 seasons overall and had stints with the Los Angeles Rams, Washington, Tampa Bay, Baltimore and Las Vegas, but he is best known for the six-year run in Philadelphia at the start of his pro career.
Jackson’s former coaches Andy Reid and Sean McVay were among those praising his hiring, with Reid saying he would “stake my career on his success at Delaware State.”
In 95 career games with the Eagles, Jackson ranks third all time in receiving yards (6,512), sixth in receptions (379) and ninth in receiving touchdowns (35). As a punt returner, he finished second in punt returns (132), third in punt return yards (1,296) and is tied for the team’s all-time lead in punt return touchdowns with four.
