  • Congresswoman Sarah McBride ceremonially sworn in, in her home state of Delaware | The Latest from WDEL News

Nearly a month after taking office, Congresswoman Sarah McBride was ceremonially sworn in Tuesday night in Wilmington.

McBride took the oath of office which was administered by 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Tamika Montgomery-Reeves. Governor Matt Meyer and Attorney General Kathy Jennings also spoke during the event at Old Town Hall.

McBride said while she had been in office for a few weeks, “it didn’t feel right unless and until we came together as a Delaware family to formalize this privilege that I have to represent the greatest state in the House of Representatives.”

The ceremony came at the end of a day in which there was much confusion and concern over action take by President Donald Trump and the administration to freeze or potentially freeze federal funding to certain programs.

“I enter Congress at a moment of uncertainty and fear for so many in our country. A time that will test our constitution, our economy and our very compassion,” McBride said. “The events of the last 24 hours only reinforce the chaos and cruelty of this new administration as health care for one in four Americans, child care for millions of kids, and non-profit programs serving families across the country have been thrust into confusion and risk. It is unacceptable and unconscionable.”

“And while it is understandable to be overwhelmed by our politics, to search foe easy answers or comforting solutions, if we are to truly face these challenges, then we must face up to the circumstances that gave rise to the current state of our politics,” McBride continued.

“Here in Delaware, we understand the necessity of collaboration, not out of some empty belief in compromise-for-compromise sake, but because we know you cannot have a diverse democracy if we lose our capacity to have conversations across difference and disagreement, if dissent is disallowed, if we stop seeing one another as people.”

McBride, who made history as the first openly transgender state senator in the country, now adds another milestone to her career by becoming the first transgender congresswoman in U.S. history.

The ceremony, held at the state capitol in Dover, was attended by family, friends, and supporters who gathered to witness this groundbreaking event. McBride, who won her election in November, took the oath of office with pride and determination, vowing to represent the people of Delaware with integrity and dedication.

In her speech following the ceremony, McBride thanked her constituents for their support and pledged to work tirelessly on behalf of all Delawareans. She highlighted her commitment to expanding access to healthcare, fighting for LGBTQ+ rights, and advocating for policies that benefit all members of her community.

  • Former USS John F. Kennedy towed down Delaware River as aircraft carrier begins journey out of Philadelphia Navy Yard

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — The decommissioned aircraft carrier, formerly named after President John F. Kennedy, has begun its journey as it heads south from the Philadelphia Navy Yard to the scrapyard.

Towboats began towing the vessel down the Delaware River around 9:30 a.m. on Thursday to begin the journey to Brownsville, Texas.

The large ship will be towed through the Delaware River, through the Delaware Bay and into the Atlantic Ocean. Once it reaches the Gulf Coast of Texas, crews will dismantle the Kennedy.

The move to Texas was pushed back after a delay on Wednesday.

Ray Staley and Michael Marchesse served onboard from 1971 to 1973 – just two kids from Norristown.

“We met in the ship’s library and we found out we had mutual friends, and lived five miles from each other. We’ve been friends for 52 years,” said Michael Marchesse of Norristown.

In Chester, the veterans were joined by dozens of other onlookers who were watching as the aircraft carrier passed by.

Some of them were reminded of their time in the Navy.

“No regrets at all, a wonderful experience. Lucked out,” said Ray Staley of Royersford.

The aircraft carrier conducted US Navy missions worldwide during its 39 years of service.

The ship conducted 18 deployments including to the Mediterranean, Tyrrhenian, Ionian, Ligurian, Aegean and Adriatic seas, during a period of escalating tension in the Middle East and North Africa, often while under the surveillance of Soviet ships.

It was the Navy’s final conventionally-powered aircraft carrier before switching to nuclear power.

“Big John,” as it was affectionately nicknamed, was decommissioned in 2007 and has been in Philadelphia ever since.

A new aircraft carrier named after JFK will enter service later this year.

The former USS John F. Kennedy, a decommissioned aircraft carrier, was recently towed down the Delaware River as it begins its journey out of the Philadelphia Navy Yard. The massive vessel, once a symbol of American military power, is now being retired and will eventually be scrapped.

The USS John F. Kennedy served in the United States Navy for over 30 years before being decommissioned in 2007. Since then, it has been docked at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, awaiting its fate.

As the aircraft carrier was slowly towed down the river, crowds gathered to catch a glimpse of this historic moment. Many former crew members and veterans of the USS John F. Kennedy were also in attendance, bidding farewell to the ship that had been such a significant part of their lives.

The journey of the USS John F. Kennedy out of Philadelphia marks the end of an era, but also serves as a reminder of the important role that aircraft carriers play in the defense of our nation. As the massive vessel makes its way to its final destination, we honor its service and the men and women who served aboard it.

Can DeSean Jackson have same effect at Delaware State as Deion Sanders?

DeSean Jackson, a former NFL wide receiver known for his speed and playmaking ability, recently announced his decision to join the coaching staff at Delaware State University. With his experience playing at the highest level of football, many fans and analysts are wondering if Jackson can have the same impact at Delaware State as Deion Sanders did at Jackson State.

Deion Sanders, a Hall of Fame cornerback and former NFL star, made headlines when he became the head coach at Jackson State University in 2020. Sanders brought a level of excitement and energy to the program, helping to attract top recruits and generate buzz around the team. His presence on the sidelines and in the locker room revitalized the program and brought attention to HBCU football.

Now, with DeSean Jackson joining Delaware State as a coach, there is speculation about whether he can have a similar effect on the program. Jackson’s speed and skill as a player made him a standout in the NFL, and his knowledge of the game could prove invaluable to the players at Delaware State. If he can bring the same level of passion and enthusiasm to coaching as he did to playing, there is potential for him to make a significant impact on the program.

Only time will tell if DeSean Jackson can have the same effect at Delaware State as Deion Sanders did at Jackson State. However, with his talent, experience, and dedication to the game, there is reason to believe that Jackson could help elevate the program and bring success to the Hornets. Fans will be eagerly watching to see how Jackson’s coaching career unfolds and whether he can leave a lasting legacy at Delaware State.

  • Tracking Monday snow: How much and latest forecast for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — After some early showers Friday evening, the weekend is calm before Monday’s snowstorm.

PennDOT will ready to make sure the roads are safe.

“For Monday, I expect to call in all of our contractor trucks, which puts us up over 420 or trucks in the five-county region,” said PennDOT spokesperson Brad Rudolph.

Officials are urging residents to plan ahead, stay off the roads if conditions worsen, and look out for parking restrictions in snow emergency routes.

“The longer it takes for them to run their routes, depending on traffic and the intensity of the storm, we could see some serious accumulations on Monday,” Rudolph said.

    Latest forecast

    • Snow arrives between 4 a.m. to 7 a.m

    • Light, but steady snow falls during the daylight hours

    • There doesn’t look to be any one period of really heavy snow so that is good news for keeping up on the roads

    • Temperatures will be below freezing so snow will stick and make untreated surfaces slippery

    • Snow ends around 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

    • There will be a very tight snowfall gradient across our area from less than 1″ in the Poconos to over 6″ in parts of Delaware and South Jersey.

    • Expect some adjustments as we go through the weekend and the storm continues to move across the U.S. and get better analyzed.

At Do It Best Hardware Store in Radnor, customers were out buying snow shovels, ice scrapers and ice melt.

“I have birdseed for my finch feeder and scrapers for the storm to get the snow off,” said Bud Gerhab from Berwyn.

Lou Muth has owned the business for 25 years and is used to preparing for winter weather.

How crews are preparing for Monday’s snowstorm

“The demand is obviously for snow, shovels, ice melt-and heat. Electric heaters, propane, anything to do with weather. The plumbing department is way up with pipes freezing, all that stuff,” said Muth.

Atlantic City leaders said they’re preparing for a worst-case scenario of 6 to 8 inches.

“The city of Atlantic City will have the proper staffing and equipment. We have been coordinating with the police our EMS crews, our ambulance people, the fire department,” said Atlantic City OEM Coordinator and Fire Chief Scott Evans.

Police have four-wheel drive and military surplus vehicles ready to go and plan to get the homeless to shelters.

“I want to ensure the residents of Atlantic City that the city is prepared,” said Atlantic City Marty Small Sr.

  • DeSean Jackson gets first head coaching job at Delaware State

DeSean Jackson gets first head coaching job at Delaware State

Former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson has been hired as the new football coach at Delaware State, the school announced Friday.

“The opportunity for me to help write another chapter here at DSU is a once-in-a-lifetime moment consistent with my journey as a young boy finding his way to manhood through mentorship, accountability, achievement, and discipline,” Jackson said in a statement. “If we build that kind of culture at Delaware State University, we will attract the right talent and radically change the trajectory of this program. I cannot wait to get started.”

Jackson is the second former NFL star to be hired at a MEAC school this month, joining Michael Vick at Norfolk State.

A source told ESPN’s Pete Thamel that it had always been a dream of Jackson’s to coach at a historically Black college or university. Jackson referenced that importance in his statement, saying the story of HBCUs “continues to be written and includes the elevation of HBCU scholars and scholar athletes in every field of human endeavor.”

Jackson and Vick join a growing list of former NFL standouts who have taken over HBCU programs in recent years. Deion Sanders had success at Jackson State before heading to Colorado, and Eddie George guided Tennessee State to the FCS playoffs this year.

Jackson will be introduced in a news conference Jan. 8. He is the first hire by athletic director Tony Tucker, who took over the role earlier this month.

“DeSean Jackson is a perfect fit for our institution — incredibly competitive, optimistic about the prospects for our collective future, and focused on the fundamentals of the institution: STUDENTS FIRST,” Tucker said in a statement.

Jackson, 38, replaces Lee Hull, who was dismissed earlier this month after two disappointing seasons, including a 1-11 showing this year.

The Hornets have not had a winning season since going 6-5 in 2012.

Jackson, who retired as a member of the Eagles after the 2023 season, made the Pro Bowl in three of his eight seasons with the team. He became the first player in NFL history to earn Pro Bowl honors at two positions — kick returner and wide receiver. He played 15 seasons overall and had stints with the Los Angeles Rams, Washington, Tampa Bay, Baltimore and Las Vegas, but he is best known for the six-year run in Philadelphia at the start of his pro career.

Jackson’s former coaches Andy Reid and Sean McVay were among those praising his hiring, with Reid saying he would “stake my career on his success at Delaware State.”

In 95 career games with the Eagles, Jackson ranks third all time in receiving yards (6,512), sixth in receptions (379) and ninth in receiving touchdowns (35). As a punt returner, he finished second in punt returns (132), third in punt return yards (1,296) and is tied for the team’s all-time lead in punt return touchdowns with four.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

DeSean Jackson, former NFL wide receiver, has just landed his first head coaching job at Delaware State University. Jackson, known for his speed and agility on the field, will now bring his expertise and leadership to the sidelines.

After a successful 12-year career in the NFL, Jackson decided to transition into coaching to share his knowledge and passion for the game with the next generation of players. He is excited to take on this new challenge and help mold the young athletes at Delaware State into successful and disciplined players.

Jackson’s hiring has generated a lot of buzz in the football world, with many fans and analysts eager to see how he will fare in his new role. With his experience and dedication to the sport, there’s no doubt that Jackson will bring a fresh perspective and innovative approach to coaching at Delaware State.

Congratulations to DeSean Jackson on this exciting new chapter in his career! We can’t wait to see what he will accomplish as head coach of the Delaware State football team.
