BYU delivers Alamo Bowl blowout to Colorado in final game for Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders

BYU made the final game of Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders’ Colorado careers one to forget.

The No. 17 Cougars blew out the No. 23 Buffaloes 36-14 in the Alamo Bowl on Saturday night as Colorado was overmatched in nearly every facet of the game.

BYU (11-2) led 20-0 at halftime as many of the flaws that had plagued Colorado through the first two years of Deion Sanders’ tenure reared their ugly heads. The Buffs (9-4) couldn’t get a running game going and the offensive line struggled in pass protection too. After BYU led 10-0 in the first quarter, the Cougars extended their lead when Parker Kingston returned a punt 64 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.

The blowout happened even as BYU QB Jake Retzlaff threw two interceptions and backup Gerry Bohanon threw one in his only pass attempt.

Hunter, the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner, got his highlight with a 43-yard TD in the third quarter on a nicely-placed pass from Sanders. But that was about all that went right for the Buffaloes.

Both Hunter and Sanders played for Colorado despite likely being early first-round picks in the 2025 NFL Draft. Colorado took out insurance policies for Sanders, Hunter and others ahead of the game in the event of an injury.

Sanders even unveiled cleats with the New York Giants logo on them before the game — the Giants have the worst record in the NFL and currently are in position for the No. 1 pick in the draft — but took the field in the first quarter with black cleats on his feet.

The game was a matchup between the two Big 12 teams because of the Alamo Bowl’s selection process. The bowl has traditionally pitted teams from the Big 12 and Pac-12 together, but the Pac-12 dissolved before the 2024 season with just Washington State and Oregon State remaining as members of the conference.

Before the season, the Alamo Bowl said that it’d pick a team that was in the Pac-12 in 2023 and a team that was in the Big 12 in 2023. With Arizona State and Oregon in the College Football Playoff and other former Pac-12 teams not having spectacular seasons, the bowl announced before the end of the 2024 season that it’d take either Arizona State and Colorado against either BYU or Iowa State based on the outcome of the Big 12 title game.

Though it was a game between current Big 12 teams, BYU and Colorado didn’t meet in the regular season. The two teams found themselves on the wrong end of a four-way tie for first with ASU and ISU and therefore missed a chance to play for the conference title and a shot at the College Football Playoff.

The win gives BYU 11 wins for the first time since 2020 and the first time in a non-pandemic season since 2009. Colorado, meanwhile, made a five-win leap in 2024 and looks to sustain that success in 2025 despite the losses of Sanders and Hunter. The Buffaloes have gotten a commitment from five-star QB JuJu Lewis and also added former Liberty QB Kaidon Salter in the transfer portal.

The BYU Cougars delivered a dominant performance in the Alamo Bowl, blowing out the Colorado Buffaloes in what turned out to be the final game for star players Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders.

BYU, led by quarterback Shedeur Sanders, son of NFL legend Deion Sanders, put on a show on both sides of the ball. Sanders threw for over 300 yards and four touchdowns, while Hunter racked up over 150 yards receiving and two touchdowns of his own.

The Cougars’ defense was equally impressive, holding the Buffaloes to just 10 points and forcing multiple turnovers throughout the game.

For Hunter and Sanders, this game marked the end of their college careers as they prepare to enter the NFL draft. Both players made a huge impact on the BYU program during their time there, and their leadership will be sorely missed.

As the final seconds ticked off the clock, the Cougars celebrated their decisive victory and sent Hunter and Sanders off with a memorable win in their last game in a BYU uniform.

Championship delivers drama with packed promotion and survival races | Championship
Chris Wilder could not contain the excitement in his voice. “It feels imminent,” said Sheffield United’s manager. “It’s getting pretty close.”

Wilder was referring to his club’s protracted takeover by American consortium, COH Sports. At long last that particular saga has reached a conclusion, with the two key investors, Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy, joining United’s board as co-chairmen after the buyout of Prince Abdullah bin Mosa’ad’s United World Group was confirmed on Monday.

As Wilder aims to reinforce his team’s position at the top of the Championship while retaining his best players, most notably the widely-coveted midfielder Gustavo Hamer, the new owners are arriving at an opportune moment. “I do think we need to strengthen in January,” said Wilder as he seeks to lead United to a third promotion in six years. But the manager is conscious that a team that began the season with a two-point deduction for defaulted transfer payments faces some potentially challenging festive fixtures, starting with Burnley’s visit on Boxing Day. Scott Parker’s side sit third, four points behind Wilder’s and one in arrears of second-place Leeds. “It’s a huge game for us,” said the former England midfielder, whose team are unbeaten in their past nine games. “But we’re on a very good run.”

How Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard must wish they could say the same. The one time England teammates meet at Coventry where the recently installed Lampard is charged with improving on his team’s 17th position and Rooney aims to lift Plymouth off the bottom of the table.

Lampard was given a “clear picture” of the size of the task at Coventry by Saturday’s 4-1 defeat at Portsmouth. “For sure, we’ll be under pressure against Plymouth but that’s the beauty of football,” said Lampard. “It’s a good pressure because we have to stand up to it. So, yes, bring on Boxing Day when we have to show up.”

Rooney branded his injury-hit Plymouth side “naive” after they conceded a late equaliser in Saturday’s 3-3 draw with a Middlesbrough team managed by his old Manchester United and England teammate Michael Carrick. On those days when Hayden Hackney illuminates midfield and Emmanuel Latte Lath remembers his shooting boots, a sweet passing if wildly-inconsistent Middlesbrough look the second tier’s most sophisticated team. Carrick’s problem is that, at other times, his defence springs alarming leaks.

Boro’s Boxing Day fixture at home to a Sheffield Wednesday side harbouring serious playoff ambitions of their own offers Hackney and friends a chance to keep West Brom, Watford and Wednesday at bay by consolidating sixth place and perhaps even leapfrogging Blackburn into fifth. It is anyone’s guess whether they will take it.

Unlike, Rooney, Lampard and Carrick, the cerebral Le Bris didn’t hit many heights during a short playing career as a defender with Rennes. Instead the 49-year-old gained a doctorate in sports physiology and biomechanics followed by a further diploma in the mental training of elite athletes before spending years as a youth coach at Lorient where, among other players who have gone on to better things, he mentored the Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Indeed, Le Bris only took charge of Lorient’s first team in 2022, coincidentally the year he also started learning English. These days he speaks his second language with such fluency and nuance that he talks about “the lucidity” of Sunderland’s passing as they endeavour to close the five-point gap on Sheffield United. Despite the north-east’s new year public transport shutdown allied to an 8pm kick-off, a crowd of around 45,000 is expected at the Stadium of Light when Wilder’s side visit Wearside on New Year’s Day for a match that could exert a significant bearing on the race for automatic promotion.

Like Leeds, Sunderland are frequently described as a Premier League club in waiting, but Le Bris knows he could do with not merely fending off those elite rivals queuing up to poach Bellingham and Rigg but also finding a reliable goalscorer. A new striker is needed to ease the stress on the Zenit St Petersburg loanee Wilson Isidor who travels to Blackburn on Thursday seeking his first goal in eight games.

The Leeds manager, Daniel Farke, remains adamant that had his No 9, Patrick Bamford, not sustained a knee injury late last season his team would have been promoted then. As Craig Short, Oxford’s caretaker coach, reflected: “Leeds are the best team in the Championship by a long way. Their athleticism and physicality sets them apart.”

With the top-tier currently containing only five northern clubs, a levelling-up project seems necessary. The good news is that Sheffield United, Leeds, Burnley, Sunderland, Blackburn and Middlesbrough are jostling to make that a springtime reality.

Review: Timothée Chalamet delivers show-stopping performance in ‘A Complete Unknown’
Come gather round Dylanologists: Timothée Chalamet is a surefire Oscar contender for best actor as the young Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown.”

It’s a great, soon-to-be legendary piece of acting, with Chalamet channeling Dylan in looks (that curly hair!), sound (he did his own singing), and iconic smirk without ever stooping to party trick mimicry.

Now, for the troubling part. “A Complete Unknown,” the film that contains Chalamet’s lit fuse of a performance, blows into theaters with the full intention of living down to its title. After 141 minutes of screen time, you won’t know more about Dylan than you did going in.

No wonder the famously withholding Dylan, now 83, approves of this fragile membrane of a movie from James Mangold, who directed the Johnny Cash biopic “Walk the Line,” and co-screenwriter Jay Cocks, who used Elijah Wald’s 2015 book “Dylan Goes Electric!” as source material.

Surprise! Mangold has sketched a portrait of the artist as a young jerk. Petulant, boorish and full of himself, the future Nobel Prize winner comes off as a real pain, even from the early days when the former Robert Allen Zimmerman, born to a tight-knit Jewish family in Duluth, Minnesota, hitched a ride to New York in 1961 ready to make his name. He was 19.

“A Complete Unknown” wraps up in 1965 when Dylan outraged folk purists at the Newport Folk Festival by plugging in an electric guitar and roaring into the rock phase of his career. His friend Johnny Cash (Boyd Holbrook) urges Dylan “to make some noise, track some mud on the carpet.” Dylan didn’t need reminding. His genius is all there in the music.

It’s the music that “A Complete Unknown” gets triumphantly right, with 40 songs, some in frustrating snippets, that power the film to glory. Chalamet prepped years on guitar and harmonica, singing live in a raw Dylan rasp that had me from his first bleating “Hello” to the show-stopping “The Times They Are a Changin.” You won’t see a better example of interpretive art this year than Chalamet’s total immersion as Dylan.

So frequent are the music interludes you could justifiably call “A Complete Unknown,” a concert film with dramatic interludes that regrettably don’t come close to matching the music.

The film trips up badly on biopic banality, notably when Dylan hooks up with Sylvie Russo (Elle Fanning), a pseudonym used at Dylan’s request for art student and political activist Suze Rotolo, pictured with Dylan on the cover of his breakthrough album, “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dyan” and the muse for his “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right.”

Sylvie complains that Dylan rarely lets her in and is dismissive and arrogant when she asks questions. The same is true when Dylan enters into a tempestuous relationship with folk goddess Joan Baez, sung and acted with crystalline clarity by Monica Barbaro (“Top Gun: Maverick”). In a heated moment, Sylvie seethes with jealousy as Dylan and Baez duet on stage.

These scenes are the stuff of sudsy soap opera and sanitized into tired cliches that rebuke everything Dylan stands for as a no-bull lyricist. Screen time is better spent watching Dylan immerse himself into the Greenwich Village music scene, vividly recreated on screen. It’s easy to understand the envy Baez feels when she first hears Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind.”

It’s folk icon Pete Seeger, played with sly ease and banked fire by an exceptional Edward Norton, who introduces Dylan to a wider audience and to his musical idol Woody Guthrie (Scoot McNairy), now hospitalized and near mute from the ravages of Huntington’s disease. “I wanted to catch his spark,” says Dylan. Mission accomplished.

Guthrie can’t speak when Dylan plays his musical homage, “Song for Woody,” but pounds his nightstand in response. Dylan’s caress of Woody’s cheek is a rare display of love. And it hits hard. Dylan meant it when he said that Guthrie’s music “struck me down to the ground.”

“A Complete Unknown” pulls too many punches and elides too many facts to show us how it feels to be Dylan, a master at staying masked and anonymous and too slippery to pin down.

It’s the dynamite actor playing him who reveals this shapeshifter in flashes of lightning and enveloping darkness. Chalamet’s transporting performance, one for the time capsule, catches Dylan in the exhilarating act of inventing himself as multitudes, a fugitive troubadour and poet who’s always creating and always in the wind.

I recently had the pleasure of watching Timothée Chalamet’s latest film, ‘A Complete Unknown,’ and I must say, his performance was truly show-stopping. Chalamet once again proves why he is considered one of the most talented young actors in Hollywood.

In ‘A Complete Unknown,’ Chalamet plays the role of a mysterious and enigmatic character who goes by the name of Alex. From the moment he appears on screen, Chalamet captivates the audience with his raw and emotional portrayal of this complex character. His ability to convey a wide range of emotions, from vulnerability to intensity, is nothing short of mesmerizing.

Not only does Chalamet deliver a powerful performance, but he also showcases his impeccable acting skills through his subtle nuances and captivating screen presence. It is clear that he has a deep understanding of his character and brings him to life in a way that is both captivating and haunting.

Overall, ‘A Complete Unknown’ is a thought-provoking and emotionally charged film, and Timothée Chalamet’s performance is without a doubt the highlight of the movie. If you are a fan of Chalamet’s work or simply appreciate great acting, I highly recommend checking out this film. Chalamet’s performance alone is worth the watch.
