Recap: Denver Nuggets get up big and then survive rally from Charlotte Hornets for 107-104 victory
The Denver Nuggets were looking to finish out their five game road trip on a high note tonight. After getting a victory last night, the Nuggets backed it up with another “W” against the Charlotte Hornets. Denver made it more interesting than it needed to be after they squandered a big lead in the second half to fall behind by four points with less than a minute to play. Nikola Jokic willed them to victory once again to cap off another big night for him and another triple double. It wasn’t exactly pretty, but the Nuggets win another one on a back to back, final score 107-104.
Neither team could make many shots to open the game. The score was still 2-2 at the nine and a half minute mark. Jokic got some easy buckets and also buried a three to build a Denver lead. There wasn’t much offense outside of Nikola though which kept the lead from growing a ton. Charlotte was still shooting a horrid percentage from the floor so Denver stayed in front. Zeke Nnaji made an early appearance as one of the first guys off the bench and Jalen Pickett followed shortly after. Denver went cold from the floor while Charlotte remained cold. Both teams started working for free throws and the Nuggets had more success to close the quarter. After one they led 27-20.

The Nuggets bench unit had to battle for points with Christian Braun doing most of the battling. They also kept the Hornets off the scoreboard and pushed the lead into double digits. The reserve group kept playing hard and kept growing their advantage. That led to an extended 20-8 run for Denver and a double digit lead when Jokic came back in. Charlotte responded and the Nuggets suddenly couldn’t buy a basket. The Hornets went on a 9-0 run and got back within three before Denver finally got a couple buckets in the final moments of the half. They went to the locker room leading 54-46.

The Nuggets exerted their will to open the second half and easily pushed the lead back above a dozen. Jamal Murray had a quiet first half but led the Nuggets offense early in the third quarter. They slowed down after that but Charlotte continued to miss shots, other than Nick Smith Jr. He was hitting threes but it seemed like every time he got one the Nuggets had an answer. Still, the Hornets weren’t going to just go away. They went on a run down the stretch of the third to get back within eight. Denver was able to stop Charlotte there but a sloppy final minute let the Hornets cut into the lead again and the third ended with the Nuggets up 90-81.

The bench unit struggled to score to start the fourth quarter and the Hornets closed in. Nnaji had some solid minutes getting a couple easy baskets and piling up blocks. Charlotte wouldn’t give in and other than Nnaji no one could score, literally. Eventually the compelte lack of offense allowed the Hornets to push all the way back and tie the game at 94. Jokic settled Denver down and helped get a couple buckets but Miles Bridges was attacking on the other end. The game stayed tied going into the final two minutes of the game. Bridges got a bucket to give Charlotte their first lead since 2-0 and then hit another to put the Hornets up four. Jokic responded with an and-one and then the Hornets inexplicably fouled him in the back court with 18 seconds left. He sunk them both and then fed Murray for a fastbreak layup off a miss to put Denver up 107-104. The Hornets couldn’t get a buzzer beater three and Denver survives to win.

The Denver Nuggets came out strong against the Charlotte Hornets, building a big lead early in the game. However, the Hornets made a strong comeback in the second half, putting pressure on the Nuggets to hold onto their lead.Despite the Hornets’ rally, the Nuggets managed to hang on for a 107-104 victory. Nikola Jokic led the way for Denver with a near triple-double, scoring 19 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and dishing out 8 assists.
The Nuggets’ defense also played a key role in securing the win, forcing the Hornets into tough shots and turnovers down the stretch. Overall, it was a hard-fought victory for Denver as they continue to climb the standings in the Western Conference.
Next up, the Nuggets will look to carry this momentum into their next game and continue their winning streak. Keep an eye on this team as they look to make a push in the playoffs.

The 3-game losing streak is no more after last night’s win at Philadelphia. The Nuggets got everything they wanted offensively, ending the game just shy of 66% shooting from the field, while also collecting 39 assists. That’s all well and good, but on the other end they also allowed 134 points from a team that’s without 2 of its top 3 players. So can we really trust the Nuggets to win on the road by 14 points here? They’ve covered the spread only once in 5 games, for the season they’re just 12-14 ATS in away games.
With just 1 win in 6 games the Hornets aren’t exactly lighting up the league at the moment, they’ll likely be without star player LaMelo Ball who did not participate in last night’s loss to the Clippers. Charlotte battled hard, Miles Bridges and Vasilije Micic had 27 and 20 points respectively, but as we all know this team is very limited at more than 1 position. The Hornets have dropped 5 straight home games vs Denver at home, but the good news is they are basically playing without any pressure at this point of the season.
Playing with no rest hasn’t affected the Nuggets all that much this season – they are 8-1 SU in 9 such games. But their defense is what concerns me here. Over their last 3 games they’re allowing 128.3 points per game which is the worst mark in the NBA. During this current road trip, we also saw them lose to a sub-par Chicago Bulls team as a 9.5-point favorite and while I do believe they’ll win here I just cannot trust them to cover. I’ll back the Hornets and the massive spread.

The Denver Nuggets will face off against the Charlotte Hornets in an exciting NBA matchup. Both teams have been playing well this season, and this game is sure to be a close one.The Nuggets are currently sitting in the middle of the Western Conference standings, with a record of 14-12. They have been led by the dynamic duo of Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray, who have been playing at an All-Star level. The Nuggets have a strong offense, but their defense has been a bit shaky at times.
On the other hand, the Hornets have surprised many this season with their strong play. They are currently sitting in the middle of the Eastern Conference standings, with a record of 13-14. LaMelo Ball has been a standout rookie for the Hornets, and Gordon Hayward has provided veteran leadership.
In terms of odds, the Nuggets are currently favored to win this game. However, the Hornets have been playing well and could pull off an upset. It will be a close game, and both teams will be looking to secure a win.
In terms of picks, I predict that the Nuggets will come out on top in a close game. Their offensive firepower will be too much for the Hornets to handle, and Jokic and Murray will lead them to victory. However, the Hornets are a talented team and could make it a close game until the end.
Overall, this game has the potential to be a high-scoring and entertaining matchup between two talented teams. Make sure to tune in and see who comes out on top in this exciting game between the Nuggets and the Hornets.

Nuggets at Hornets picks and predictions
Prediction
Nuggets 124, Hornets 112
Moneyline
PASS.
There’s no reason to look at the moneyline here. The Nuggets are a goliath road favorite and far too expensive to take, while the Hornets without Ball likely won’t pull off an upset.
Against the spread
BET HORNETS +13.5 (-118).
The Hornets have performed well as massive underdogs this season. They are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games as double-digit underdogs and have talented scorers like Bridges taking the court. Charlotte is 2-1-1 ATS in its last 4 at home.
The Nuggets are 1-2 ATS in their last 3 games as favorites of 9 or greater and have failed to cover 4 straight, going 4-5 ATS in their last 9. They have allowed at least 122 in 5 straight games, so their defense may not allow them to separate by a sizable margin.
Back HORNETS +13.5 (-118).
Over/Under
BET OVER 222.5 (-115).
The Nuggets have allowed at least 129 points in 3 of their last 4 games. Denver is 5-1 O/U in its last 6 and 30-17-1 O/U on the season.
The Hornets have scored at least 107 in 8 of their last 11 games, going 5-6 O/U. Charlotte has allowed at least 112 in 2 of its last 3. Considering those trends, take OVER 222.5 (-115).

Denver Health pauses youth gender-affirming care after Trump executive order
Denver Health this week paused gender-affirming surgeries for minors following threatened funding cuts from the Trump administration, leaving few options for transgender youth seeking that care in the metro area.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order Tuesday ordering institutions that receive federal funding to stop performing gender-affirming surgeries on anyone under 19, and forbidding them from offering puberty blockers or hormones for gender-affirming purposes.
The health system, which operates the region’s safety-net hospital, has not said whether it also is halting hormonal treatment.
“Denver Health is committed to and deeply concerned for the health and safety of our gender-diverse patients under the age of 19 in light of the executive order regarding youth gender-affirming care,” the system said in a statement Thursday. “We recognize this order will impact gender-diverse youth, including increased risk of depression, anxiety and suicidality.”
Trump’s executive order also directed federal agencies to explore ways to exclude coverage for gender-affirming care from Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare and insurance plans sold on the individual marketplace.
The Denver hospital was not alone in its actions.
In Virginia, VCU Health and Children’s Hospital of Richmond said they have suspended gender-affirming medication and gender-affirming surgical procedures for those under 19. In Washington, D.C., Children’s National Hospital said it had “paused prescriptions of puberty blockers and hormone therapy to comply with the directives while we assess the situation further.”
Denver Health officials did not say how often the hospital performed gender-affirming surgeries on people younger than 19. Most transgender people don’t undergo surgery until adulthood, if at all, but guidelines for treating patients allow surgeries to remove mammary tissue and create a masculine chest appearance in cases where the patient has the mental capacity to decide and is particularly distressed by their breasts.
The pause, first reported by 9News, doesn’t affect care for patients over 19. Hospitals that don’t comply with the order would risk losing funding through Medicare and Medicaid, which could be financially crippling for almost any facility.
Denver Health is particularly exposed, though, because it already faces financial headwinds and disproportionately relies on federal programs. In late 2024, the health system was on track to lose about $11 million for the year, following a $35 million loss in 2022 and a small profit in 2023.
The system hasn’t said how much money would be at risk if it didn’t fully comply with Trump’s order. About two-thirds of patient days in Denver Health’s hospital had either Medicare or Medicaid as the source of payment, according to the most recent hospital transparency report from the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing.
“These programs represent a significant portion of Denver Health’s funding, and the executive order specifically states that should we not comply, our participation in these programs is at risk,” the health system said in its statement. “The loss of this funding would critically impair our ability to provide care for the Denver community.”
The language in Trump’s executive order — using words such as “maiming,” “sterilizing” and “mutilation” — contradicts what is typical for gender-affirming care in the United States. It also labels guidance from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health as “junk science.”
WPATH said in a statement that restrictions and bans on “access to necessary medical care for transgender youth are harmful to patients and their families.”
Gender-affirming medical care for transgender youth isn’t common. A new study shows that fewer than 1 in 1,000 U.S. adolescents with commercial insurance received puberty blockers or hormones during a recent five-year period, and the bulk of gender-affirming surgeries are not performed on youth.
The move by Denver Health leaves few other options for younger people in the region.
Children’s Hospital Colorado stopped offering gender-affirming chest surgeries to young adult patients in 2023 and referred them to University of Colorado Hospital. Children’s never performed gender-affirming surgery on patients under 18, but continued to offer other treatments, such as therapy, puberty blockers and hormonal treatment, a spokesperson said at the time.
Children’s didn’t offer an explanation at the time, but the move coincided with increased public pressure and harassment of institutions offering gender-affirming care.
The new executive order appears to require Children’s to also halt those services, or lose federal funds. In a statement, the hospital said it continues to assess the order’s impact.
UCHealth previously offered gender-affirming care to patients who were at least 18, but will raise the age limit to 19 in compliance with Trump’s executive order, spokesman Dan Weaver said.
“We know these changes may be challenging, especially for 18-year-old patients previously approved for gender-affirming care, and behavioral health support services will be available to help support our patients navigate these changes,” he said in a statement.
Catholic-affiliated CommonSpirit Health doesn’t provide gender-affirming care to anyone, while HealthOne and AdventHealth don’t offer those services to minors.
Boulder Community Health’s Foothills Hospital offers gender-affirming care, but didn’t respond to questions about whether it provides those services to patients under 19.
Intermountain Health, which offers gender-affirming care at some of its hospitals in Utah, said it is reviewing all executive orders. Some of its Colorado hospitals are still subject to Catholic religious directives because of their prior ownership.
In its statement, Denver Health said it remains proud to be “one of a very small number of providers of comprehensive care services to all of our patients including to LGBTQ+ and gender-diverse patients.”
“As we navigate the order’s requirements,” the health system said, “we will continue to provide primary and behavioral health care to all impacted youth and will work to maintain the level of trust we have built with the LGBTQ+ community.”
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Denver Health, a leading healthcare provider in Colorado, has announced that they are pausing their youth gender-affirming care services following an executive order issued by former President Donald Trump. The executive order, which was signed in January 2021, bans federal funding for gender-affirming care for transgender youth. This includes hormone therapy, puberty blockers, and gender-affirming surgeries.
In a statement released by Denver Health, they expressed their disappointment in having to pause these critical services for young transgender patients. They emphasized their commitment to providing inclusive and affirming care for all patients, regardless of their gender identity.
The decision to pause youth gender-affirming care has sparked outrage among LGBTQ+ advocates and healthcare professionals who believe that transgender youth deserve access to gender-affirming care. Many are calling for the executive order to be overturned and for Denver Health to resume these services as soon as possible.
As the fight for transgender rights continues, it is crucial for healthcare providers like Denver Health to stand up for the rights and well-being of all patients, regardless of their gender identity. The pause on youth gender-affirming care serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by the transgender community, and the importance of advocating for their rights and access to healthcare.

What national experts predict Denver will do
The Super Bowl LIX matchup is set, with the Eagles taking on the Chiefs in a rematch of Super Bowl LVII. For the other 30 teams in the NFL, sights are set on the offseason.
The Broncos, fresh off their first playoff appearance since the Peyton Manning era, have the No. 20 pick in the upcoming NFL draft. Could they again find a fixture in their lineup at that spot like they did in Garett Bolles in 2017? Perhaps they’ll strike gold like they did in 1989 with Hall of Fame safety Steve Atwater?
Here’s a look at who national draftniks are thinking will land in Denver.
CBS Sports | Chris Trapasso | Updated Jan. 26

“The most polished route runner in the draft, Egbuka fits any and all offenses. He was a possession-type receiver in setting Ohio State’s career receptions record (205), but he’s skilled beyond that description — plus, he blocks. It’s not farfetched to envision Egbuka becoming a valued player for more than a decade, perhaps like former NFL receiver Anquan Boldin.” See the full mock draft.

“I’ve made it clear how I feel about taking a running back in the first round, but I’m not the one making the picks. And make no mistake, Jeanty is going to go in the first round. He’s a top-10 prospect with incredible elusiveness. Jeanty piled up 2,601 rushing yards and 29 rushing scores this season.
“The Broncos, meanwhile, couldn’t establish the run to help out rookie quarterback Bo Nix. Their running backs were in the bottom 10 in rushing yards (1,423), rushing TDs (8) and yards per carry (4.1) in 2024. Lead back Javonte Williams’ contract is expiring, and although Denver drafted Audric Estime in the fifth round last April, it could make a Day 1 splash at the position this year. And an added bonus: Jeanty is a great pass catcher out of the backfield, which would give Nix another outlet.” See the full mock draft.

“One of Denver’s top priorities this offseason should be to surround Bo Nix with as many weapons as possible. Loveland would fill a void at tight end and is worthy of a top-20 pick. Over the past two seasons, his 90.8 PFF receiving grade trailed only Tyler Warren among Power Four tight ends.” See the full mock draft.

“Tyler Warren is a large target with an excellent catch radius, hauling in 88 catches for over 1,000 yards in 2024 despite being a marked man weekly. He’s tough, dependable, and fights for extra yardage. Warren is also a capable blocker, making him a throwback player who fits any offense with soft hands, contested-catch ability, and a strong work ethic.” See the full mock draft.

“The Broncos also haven’t had a big-time receiving tight end in a while. Warren can take over games receiving with his size, strength, and athleticism, which also are key assets in run blocking and wrinkle plays. He would be the ideal intermediate target for Bo Nix as a potential new Jimmy Graham for Sean Payton and Joe Lombardi.” See the full mock draft.

#national #experts #predict #Denver3 Trades Denver Nuggets need to make to get Nikola Jokic a better supporting cast
The Denver Nuggets are still one of the NBA’s most elite teams today. However, their standing this season isn’t up to par compared to their previous seasons. Two seasons ago, Nikola Jokic led the Nuggets to the first title in franchise history. While they failed to defend their title in the following season, they remained near the top of the mountain, securing the second seed.
This season, the Denver Nuggets are in fourth place in the Western Conference with a 28-17 record. While their standing is already considered good, it could be better, especially with a team led by the three-time MVP.
Here are three trades the Nuggets need to make to help provide Jokic with a better-supporting cast.
•
Jimmy Butler and two other players the Denver Nuggets need to trade for
#1, Jimmy Butler
NBA: Denver Nuggets at Miami Heat – Source: Imagn Jimmy Butler is the hottest trade target in the NBA at the moment. Butler openly expressed his desire to leave the Miami Heat after their president, Pat Riley, said harsh words about the star forward. Since then Butler hasn’t been playing consistently, and both parties are actively trying to find a new home for him.
With that in mind, the Denver Nuggets may want to take advantage of Butler’s vulnerability and try to make the Heat an offer. Having a player like Jimmy on the Nuggets will not only add more offense but will solidify the team’s hustle on defense.
#2, Brandon Ingram
NBA: Phoenix Suns at New Orleans Pelicans – Source: Imagn There have been several rumors that the New Orleans Pelicans are ready to rebuild and move on from the Brandon Ingram era. If the sentiments are true, then the Nuggets may want to consider targeting the Pelicans wing. Ingram is one of the league’s most versatile scorers. He can score from the inside, midrange and outside.
While Denver already has guys like Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr. who provide these services, having someone like Ingram would be a huge upgrade considering he possesses all these offensive skillsets.
#3, Zach LaVine
NBA: Philadelphia 76ers at Chicago Bulls – Source: Imagn Another player whose name has always been brought up in trade talks is Zach LaVine. This was especially true for the LA Lakers as his name always came up whenever the Purple and Gold tried to make moves in the trade market. However, nothing has truly come to fruition as LaVine remains with the Chicago Bulls.
If the Denver Nuggets decide to pursue the star guard, he might end up being a perfect fit for them. Zach LaVine is more of an inside scorer who can shoot the ball from outside when needed. His playing style would go well with Russell Westbrook and Nikola Jokic as the two stars can easily set him up for a nice finish to the rack.

- Trade for a high-impact wing player: The Nuggets should look to trade for a versatile wing player who can provide scoring and playmaking alongside Jokic. This player should be able to create their own shot and take some pressure off of Jokic on offense. This would give the Nuggets a more well-rounded offensive attack and make them a more dangerous team in the Western Conference.
- Trade for a defensive-minded big man: The Nuggets need to improve their defense if they want to compete at a higher level in the playoffs. Adding a defensive-minded big man who can protect the rim and guard the paint would provide much-needed support for Jokic on the defensive end. This player would also help to alleviate some of the defensive responsibilities that currently fall on Jokic’s shoulders.
- Trade for a veteran point guard: While Jamal Murray is a talented young point guard, the Nuggets could benefit from adding a veteran playmaker to their roster. A experienced point guard could provide leadership, experience, and stability to the team, helping to guide them through the ups and downs of a long season. This player would also be able to take some of the playmaking burden off of Jokic, allowing him to focus more on scoring and rebounding.
By making these trades, the Denver Nuggets could surround Nikola Jokic with a better supporting cast and elevate their chances of making a deep playoff run.

Preview: Denver Nuggets travel to New York to face the Knicks
The Denver Nuggets stagger into Madison Square Garden tonight to face the New York Knicks. Denver has lost a couple of sorry defensive performances in a row, while the Knicks are winners of four straight. Nikola Jokic had another triple-double in the loss to the Chicago Bulls on Monday night, but no one on the Nuggets seems to want to play defense right now. After a really nice stretch of basketball against some injured and overmatches squads, Denver is coming back to earth and has to face the notion that otherworldly offense when Joker is on the floor doesn’t solve everything if they do nothing else.
Both squads are 7-3 in their last ten, but Denver is tied with the Lakers in the loss column in the Western Conference standings, and only has a three game lead on eighth place out West – they need to start playing with some urgency. The Knicks on the other hand look rejuvenated after their rough stretch and are knocking on the door of second place in the East as they stand one game behind the Celtics. There is plenty to play for in the couple of weeks before the All Star Break – here’s hoping Denver remembers that tonight.
The Essentials
Who: Denver Nuggets (28-18) at New York Knicks (31-16)
When: 5:30PM MST
Where: Madison Square Garden, The Big Apple, Earth
How to watch/listen: Denver Stiffs does not condone piracy. ESPN. Altitude, or 92.5 FM. Say you have Dumbo’s feather for the locker room to give the Nuggets some courage.
Rival Blog: Posting and Toasting
Injury report: Trey Alexander – out (G League assignment), Spencer Jones – out (G League assignment),Vlatko Cancar – out (the worst luck ever and also knee surgery), DaRon Holmes II – out (Achilles); Josh Hart – questionable (knee), Pacome Dadiet – out (toe), Mitchell Robinson – out (ankle), Kevin McCullar Jr. – out (knee)
The Three Things
The thing to watch for: Pride
Look, we can talk Xs and Os all we want, but if the Nuggets don’t care to play hard on both sides of the ball then there’s not a gameplan on Earth that can overcome that. Denver has always had an intermittent motor when it comes to defense, while the Knicks grind so hard on that side of the floor their knees dislocate occasionally. Coaches Michael Malone and Tom Thibodeau were both on Jeff Van Gundy’s staff back in the day, and both coaches will run their guys into the ground, but Malone has an offensively-oriented team that doesn’t always enjoy the dirty work. As Malone says though, he shouldn’t have to coach effort, and hopefully embarrassing themselves for two games in a row – and facing a team that properly humbled Denver on its home court to the tune of a 145-118 beatdown earlier this season – will have the Nuggets in the right mindset for this matchup. If not, this could get embarrassing quickly as the Knicks have put up 140+ in their past two games, against the Memphis Grizzlies and the Sacramento Kings. Denver will have to put the work in to avoid being a trophy for the MSG crowd.
The thing to remember: Math is simple, execution is tougher
Neither the Knicks nor the Nuggets take a lot of threes. New York is 25th in attempts at 35 a game and Denver is 30th with just 31 attempts. They are both top-5 in percentage though – they make the ones they take. The Knicks made 19-of-36 against Denver last time, and it’s hard to beat a team that makes 50% of its threes. Denver has to close out to shooters better; the Bulls lit them up from behind the arc also on Monday, and every team that acts like a volume shooter against the Nuggets three-point defense seems to do very well. Karl-Anthony Towns will come out motivated against Nikola Jokic – he always is. The Nuggets will hound Jamal Murray to try to make him give up the ball. Julian Strawther can’t be scoreless as the only real bench shooter and Michael Porter Jr. needs to react to physicality with buckets instead of excuses. Aaron Gordon can’t be dragging his leg around on perimeter defense and both Christian Braun and Peyton Watson need to defend as hard as they are defended at the very least.
But it’s all about execution. In the early moments and the late ones alike, the Nuggets need to execute their plan on both sides of the ball. New York looks bright-eyed and bushy-tailed now that Thibs has extended his rotation to more of a nine-man, and it’s up to Denver to match that energy and make the math harder on the Knicks by actually contesting and re-contesting, all night long.
The thing to bet: Denver + 3
I don’t expect the Knicks to blow out the Nuggets. Denver on the road is never a safe bet against a good team, which the Knicks absolutely are, but pride should come in at some point. Denver was in a groove and then ran into a Timberwolves team that just harassed them and a Bulls squad that made its deep shots. Denver jogged through those performances limply – I think MSG will bring out their competitive fire. If you’re getting the points, take em because at +3 that’s the sites just giving the Knicks the standard home court advantage. If they think it’s basically even up, then bet on the MVP I say – and hope everyone comes out mad early.
Get ready basketball fans, the Denver Nuggets are heading to the Big Apple to take on the New York Knicks in what is sure to be an exciting matchup. The Nuggets, led by stars Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray, will be looking to continue their winning streak and solidify their position in the Western Conference standings. On the other side, the Knicks, led by Julius Randle and RJ Barrett, will be looking to defend their home court and come out with a win against a tough opponent. Both teams have been playing well as of late, so this game is sure to be a close and competitive one.
Be sure to tune in and catch all the action as the Denver Nuggets travel to New York to face the Knicks. It’s sure to be a game you won’t want to miss! #DenverNuggets #NewYorkKnicks #NBA #Basketball #Preview
