Vladimir Putin has refused to directly engage with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, calling him “illegitimate”.

The Russian president said Ukraine will have to find a legal way to hold the peace talks as Kyiv has not held any elections since Russia started the war on its smaller neighbour.

In response, Mr Zelensky said the Russian leader’s statements showed he was afraid of talks and sought to keep the conflict going indefinitely.

On the war front, more than a hundred drones targeted Russian oil facilities, including a nuclear power plant, in a major Ukrainian attack this morning, Russian officials said. The Russian defence ministry said that 104 drones were involved in raids across western Russia, 11 of which were destroyed over the Smolensk region.

This comes as North Korea is set to send more than 100 artillery systems to be used against Ukraine’s forces in the war, officials in Kyiv said.

A close ally of Russia, North Korea is about to double the number of artillery systems it has deployed to Russia’s Kursk region, said Kyrylo Budanov, Ukraine’s military intelligence chief.

Zelensky asks Trump to be on Ukraine’s side and reject Putin

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has urged US president Donald Trump to be on Ukraine’s side as the US attempts to broker a peace deal.

“We want him (Trump) to be on the side of justice, on the side of Ukraine,” Mr Zelensky said in the interview aired last night. “Putin is not afraid of Europe,” he said.

Mr Zelensky added Ukraine cannot recognise Russia’s occupation, but it preferred a diplomatic resolution.

The White House had no immediate comment.

Mr Trump has expressed willingness to speak to Mr Putin about ending the war, a contrast with the administration of Democratic former president Joe Biden, who shunned the Russian leader.

Russia shuts output at petrochemical plant after drone attack

Russian petrochemicals giant Sibur said it has temporarily suspended production today at its plant in the Nizhny Novgorod region due to a Ukrainian drone attack.

The company said debris had fallen onto the plant and caused a fire but there were no casualties. Emergency services were working at the site, it said.

Australian soldier Oscar Jenkins is alive, foreign minister says

Oscar Jenkins, an Australian soldier who was previously feared dead in Russia, is alive and in Russian custody, Australia’s foreign minister Penny Wong has announced.

Mr Jenkins, 32, signed up to fight for Ukraine against Russian forces before he was taken captive. A video showed him with hands bound and being struck by a Russian interrogator earlier this month, sparking fears for his life.

“The Australian government has received confirmation from Russia that Oscar Jenkins is alive and in custody,” Ms Wong said today.

Australia still holds “serious concerns for Mr Jenkins as a prisoner of war,” she said. “We have made clear to Russia in Canberra and in Moscow that Mr Jenkins is a prisoner of war and Russia is obligated to treat him in accordance with international humanitarian law, including humane treatment,” the minister said.

A foreign soldier who trained him said earlier this month that he believed Mr Jenkins had been executed in captivity to make an example of him, according to a report by The Sydney Morning Herald on 14 January.

More than 100 Ukrainian drones hit Russian power, oil facilities

More than a hundred drones hit Russian oil facilities, including a nuclear power plant, in a major Ukrainian attack this morning, Russian officials said.

The Russian defence ministry said that 104 drones were involved in raids across western Russia, 11 of which were destroyed over the Smolensk region.

The Smolensk nuclear power plant, the largest power generating plant in Russia’s northwest, was working normally, RIA state news agency reported, citing the plant’s press service.

Air defence systems destroyed a drone attempting to strike a nuclear power facility in the western region of Smolensk bordering Belarus, governor Vasily Anokhin said on the Telegram app.

In total, Russian air defences destroyed drones over nine regions, nearly half of them over Kursk where Russian forces are fighting to drive out Ukrainian troops that have occupied several villages.

North Korea sends cannons and artillery – designed to attack Seoul – to Ukraine war

North Korea is set to send more than 100 artillery systems to be used against Ukraine’s forces in the war, officials in Kyiv said.

A close ally of Russia, North Korea is about to double the number of artillery systems it has deployed to Russia’s Kursk region, said Kyrylo Budanov, Ukraine’s military intelligence chief.

North Korea has already given at least 120 North Korean-made M1989 Koksans, as well as another 120 of its M1991 multiple-launch rocket systems, the Ukrainian military intelligence official said.

Pyongyang was preparing to send another tranche of at least the same amount, Lt Gen Budanov said, adding that open source analysts have spotted some already on their way to the war.

The 170mm M1989 Koksan howitzers were manufactured by North Korea to attack the South Korean capital in the event of a war. It is among the longest-range artillery systems in the world.

In the latest development of the Russia Ukraine war, Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected calls for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, labeling him as ‘illegitimate’. This comes as tensions continue to escalate between the two countries, with Russia’s recent deployment of North Korean cannons adding to the already volatile situation.

The decision to refuse talks with Zelensky is a clear signal of Putin’s hardline stance towards Ukraine, as he continues to push for his own agenda in the region. The deployment of North Korean cannons further complicates the situation, raising concerns about the potential for increased violence and instability in the region.

The international community has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation in Ukraine, with calls for dialogue and de-escalation growing louder. However, Putin’s rejection of talks with Zelensky and the deployment of North Korean cannons indicate that a peaceful resolution to the conflict may be further out of reach.

As the situation continues to unfold, the world watches anxiously, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the Russia Ukraine war. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Managers from Vail Mountain deployed to Park City as ski patrollers strike for better wages

Managers from Vail Mountain deployed to Park City as ski patrollers strike for better wages

Managers from Vail Mountain have been sent to Park City to keep operations running there as ski patrollers from the Park City Professional Ski Patrol Association began striking Friday morning, calling for better wages and working conditions. Both Park City ski area and Vail Mountain are owned by Vail Resorts.

Vail Mountain’s ski patrol director and senior manager of health and safety are among those who have been sent, according to a person familiar with the situation who agreed to speak off the record.

Vail and Beaver Creek spokesperson John Plack said while he can’t comment on specific employee locations or assignments, he can confirm that a patrol support team has been deployed “to help support operational continuity.”

That team “consists of experienced patrollers from Park City Mountain and our other mountain resorts,” Plack said.

While Plack described the strike as a “drastic action,” the Park City Professional Ski Patrol Association, in a statement issued Friday, said it did everything in its power to avoid the work stoppage.

    Support Local Journalism

“Our goal has been and continues to be to secure a fair contract,” the union said in a statement published Friday.

The union is asking for ski patrol members to start at $23 an hour rather than $21, saying the $21 starting wage is not enough to make a living in Park City.

Workers have pointed to the seven-figure salaries of Vail’s top brass to showcase the gap between those on the ground and those in the executive suites, with CEO Kirsten Lynch receiving a total compensation package of $6,288,586 for fiscal year 2024, Executive Chairperson Rob Katz earning a compensation package of $2,202,070 and Executive Vice President Angela Korch earning a compensation package of $2,183,196.

    Safety concerns cited

The union said the move to fly in managers from other states is part of an anti-worker strategy that helps the company avoid coming to the table with a reasonable offer.

“Vail Resorts forced this walkout by bargaining in bad faith and repeatedly violating the National Labor Relations Act,” the union said in a statement issued on Friday morning. “Consistent with Vail’s bad faith tactics, after yesterday’s seven-hour negotiation session with a mediator present, the company continued to refuse to give a counteroffer on wages or benefits. They have had two weeks to prepare a counter proposal.”

Workers in Park City have described the practice of sending in out-of-town managers as dangerous, saying those employees “do not know the resort, and do not know our protocols.”

A worker in Vail expressed concern over losing the ski patrol director during the busiest time of the season, something the Park City Ski Patrollers Union also agreed is concerning.

“This move from the company will make the guest we care about here in Park City unsafe, and make all guests unsafe at the resorts where these employees are being pulled from,” the union said in a post published Dec. 24.

Plack said Vail Resorts remains committed to safety.

“As always, safety is our top priority,” he said.

    Halt on consumer spending requested

The union has asked skiers and snowboarders in all states where Vail Resorts operates to halt spending at company-owned properties for the duration of this strike.

“Do not purchase day tickets or food from Vail owned dining. Do not use Vail-owned rental shops or retail stores. Do not stay in Vail-owned hotels. Instead, buy and support local businesses,” the union said in a statement.

Vail Resorts Retail operates more than 250 retail and rental locations across North America. In Vail Village and Lionshead, that includes the shops labeled Burton, Helly Hansen, Oakley, Patagonia, Salomon, The North Face, Breeze Ski Rentals and Vail Sports.

Vail Resorts-owned or operated hotels include the Arrabelle, the Lodge at Vail and the Hythe. Vail Resorts-owned restaurants include the on-mountain restaurants at Mid-Vail, Two Elk, Wildwood and Eagle’s Nest, as well as Tavern on the Square in Lionshead.

Attention all skiers and snowboarders! Managers from Vail Mountain have been deployed to Park City as ski patrollers go on strike for better wages.

The ski patrollers at Park City are demanding fair compensation for their hard work and dedication to keeping the slopes safe for all guests. In response to the strike, Vail Mountain has sent experienced managers to help ensure the safety and security of the mountain while negotiations continue.

While we support the ski patrollers in their fight for fair wages, we also appreciate the dedication of the managers from Vail who have stepped up to fill in during this time of need. We hope for a swift resolution to the strike so that everyone can get back to enjoying the slopes.

In the meantime, let’s show our support for the ski patrollers and their efforts to secure better wages and working conditions. We all deserve to enjoy the mountains, and that starts with fair treatment for those who make it all possible. #SupportSkiPatrollers #FairWagesForAll

US Olympic sprinter Fred Kerley is facing charges of battery and disorderly conduct after being tasered by police during an arrest in Miami.

Officers were involved in an active investigation when Kerley approached them last night, the force said, concerned about his vehicle which was parked nearby.

Miami Beach police said his demeanour became “increasingly aggressive” and he was asked to leave the area, but refused.

The incident was captured on a police body camera.

Kerley, 29, won bronze in the men’s 100m at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and silver in the event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He is also a former world champion.

“Despite officers’ efforts to de-escalate the situation, the defendant assumed a fighting stance and continued to ignore their lawful commands,” a police statement said.

“When the officers attempted to effectuate his arrest, he actively resisted their efforts. Consequently, emergency back-up was requested, a dart-firing stun gun was effectively deployed, and the defendant was arrested without any further incident.”

Kerley, who starred in the Netflix athletics docuseries Sprint last year, was arrested on charges of resisting an officer without violence and disorderly conduct, as well as battery.

He is expected to appear in court this afternoon, according to local reports.

US Olympic sprinter Fred Kerley is facing a battery charge after police deployed a stun gun during his arrest in Miami. The incident occurred on Friday night when Kerley allegedly got into a physical altercation with a woman at a hotel in the city.

According to police reports, Kerley resisted arrest and was eventually subdued with a stun gun before being taken into custody. He has since been charged with battery and is currently being held at the Miami-Dade County Jail.

Kerley, who is a gold medalist in the 4x400m relay at the Tokyo Olympics, has not yet commented on the incident. His arrest comes just weeks after he was named as a member of the US team for the World Athletics Championships in Oregon later this year.

This incident has raised concerns about the behavior of athletes outside of their professional careers and the consequences they may face for their actions. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
