  • Will January 20 Be The Most Depressing Day Of The Year?

January 20, 2025, is being called “Blue Monday.” Not because it’s also National Cheese Lover’s Day, which may result in increased consumption of blue cheese. And not because it happens to be the day of the Presidential Inauguration this year, which may be a happy day for some but unhappy for others. No, it’s because back in 2005, a U.K. company called Sky Travel, began dubbing the third Monday of January each year as “Blue Monday.” This travel company claimed that this is the day each year when happiness levels go furthest South, meaning fall to the lowest levels of the year. So, the question is whether this claim was based on, you know, that thing called science.

Blue Monday Arose As A Marketing Gimmick

Well, surprise, surprise, not claims out there are based on real scientific evidence. Yes, shocking but true. Apparently, the company worked with a U.K.-based psychologist named Cliff Arnall to develop a “depression formula,” that goes like this: [W+(D-d)] x TQ divided by M x NA. All these D’s and other letters may make you go WTH. Well, in this formula, the W stands for the weather, D for your debt, d for your monthly salary, T for the time since Christmas, Q for the time since you failed quitting something that you attempted to quit, M for low motivational levels and NA for the need to take action. From this formula, they somehow landed on the third Monday of January as the worst day happiness-wise. But it’s unclear how that happened and what scientific evidence is behind this formula.

That’s because the primary motivation for identifying Blue Monday may have been, drum roll please, marketing rather than the advancement of science and health. Sky Travel was a travel company and not some type of scientific research institute. And heck, if you can convince everyone that the third Monday of each January will be the most depressing of the year, perhaps they’ll schedule a getaway vacation around that time. If you’d like to ask Sky Travel more about the origins of this Blue Monday claim, you’d be out of luck. Apparently, the sky’s not the limit for this company as the business shut down in 2010.

It also doesn’t make sense that one day should be particularly bad for everyone. Lots of happy things could happen on January 20. There’s the aforementioned National Cheese Lover’s Day, for example. So, if you like cheese, January 20 could be a particularly Gouda day for you, so to speak. Or you may be celebrating actor Rainn Wilson’s birthday if you are a fan of The Office or Rainn Wilson himself. Regardless, remember, no single day of the year is universally great for everyone or universally terrible for everyone—not even Presidential Inauguration Day.

The Dangers Of The Blue Monday Concept

In general, expecting a particular day to be especially good or especially bad for no clear reason may not be an especially wise thing to do. It could set up an expectations problem. Never underestimate the power of suggestion. Pessimism about a day could be a self-fulfilling prophecy, making you feel down and depressed. You could end up missing opportunities as well since you anticipate the day to be bad. Ultimately, unless you have a time machine or access to the Quantum Realm as Ant-Man does, no one can tell whether a particular day will end up being good or bad.

Moreover, this whole one-worst-day-of-the-year thing can end up oversimplifying and trivializing feelings and emotional states like depression, anxiety or the ups and downs that you would expect throughout the year. It could set up a “you should feel immediately better the next day” dynamic that again raises unrealistic expectations. For example, if January 20 is supposed to be the most down day, what if you feel even worse on January 21, January 22 or beyond?

Keep in mind that emotional and mental health are not like a Slanket. They are not one-size-fits all and instead, a lot more complex. I’ve written for Forbes about the need for more precision mental health, where assessments and treatments are better tailored to different people and their varying circumstances.

The Benefits Of The Blue Monday Concept

All of this being said, there is one potential big benefit of the Blue Monday concept. It may bring more attention to why January in general—rather than a particular day in January—may be especially tough for multiple reasons:

    • The weather can be cold and unpleasant in the Northern Hemisphere. Few would say that they would rather not be able to feel their hands and face, with the possible exception of what the Weeknd referred to in that song. Plus, the more inclement weather can keep people cooped up in indoors, less able to enjoy the outside.
    • The days can be short with less sunlight. And this can adversely affect melatonin secretion, which in turn can affect mood, energy and sleep patterns.
    • Post-Holidays let down. After all the parties and whatever of the December Holidays and New Year’s Eve and Day, January can feel a bit empty of celebrations.
    • Time for self-reflection. The arrival of the new year can force you to look more closely at your life. And you may not necessarily like what you see. That’s why people tend to make resolutions on or around New Year’s Day. For example, the use of dating apps tends to highest the first Sunday of each January, as I’ve covered for Psychology Today. Unfortunately, many of theseNew Year’s resolutions to fall by the wayside in January as well, which could be an additional downer.

All of this makes all of the January and not just a single day in January a prime month for seasonal affective disorder, which is also fittingly known as SAD. SAD is when one experiences depression during particular seasons, typically the Winter seasons, and affects about five percent of all adults in the U.S. for about 40 percent of the year, according to the American Psychiatric Association. Now, just because you don’t officially have SAD, doesn’t mean that you won’t have the Winter blues and vice-versa.

How To Combat The Winter Blues

Therefore, practicing self-care will be particularly important this month. That means making sure that you do the following:

    • Expose yourself to sunlight.
    • Get enough sleep
    • Eat well.
    • Exercise regularly.
    • Avoid the use of drugs and alcohol.
    • Stay connected with others.
    • Consider professional help like a therapist if needed.

And keep things in perspective. Life is inherently uncertain. You never know what may be around the corner, good or bad. Remember what you may be experiencing or feeling on “Blue Monday” may not necessarily be the new order for the year or your life. Just because things are tough right now doesn’t guarantee that they will be tough in the future.

As we approach January 20, many people are wondering if this day will be the most depressing day of the year. With the winter blues in full swing and the post-holiday slump settling in, it’s easy to see why this date might be a challenging one for many.

The combination of cold weather, shorter days, and the end of the holiday season can leave people feeling down and unmotivated. Add in the stress of returning to work or school after the holidays, and it’s no wonder that January 20 has been dubbed “Blue Monday” by some.

But while January 20 may bring its own set of challenges, it’s important to remember that depression and seasonal affective disorder are serious mental health conditions that can affect people at any time of year. If you or someone you know is struggling, it’s important to seek help from a mental health professional.

So while January 20 may be a tough day for many, it’s important to remember that there is help and support available. And with the right tools and resources, you can make it through this challenging time and come out stronger on the other side.

  • White House staffers describe mood as ‘depressing’ as Biden fights for legacy and pushes idea he could have beaten Trump

White House staffers describe mood as ‘depressing’ as Biden fights for legacy and pushes idea he could have beaten Trump

Staffers are reporting a “depressing” mood around the White House in the final weeks of Joe Biden’s term as the president works to cement his legacy and reflects on the 2024 election.

With less than one month until President-elect Donald Trump takes office on January 20, White House aides told The Wall Street Journal the mood at work is “draining” and “depressing.” Biden has also expressed that he could have defeated Trump in November, the Journal reports.

Entrepreneur Joe Kiani, a major Democratic donor and friend to Biden, told the Journal, “if he ran, he really thought he was going to win.”

“By not running, he was worried Trump would win,” Kiani said. “He just didn’t want to win at any cost.”

Biden’s belief, however, is not a critique of Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign, the Journal reports. Rather, Biden believes that because he beat Trump once, he could have done it again.

Harris’s allies, meanwhile, told the Journal a few extra weeks on the campaign trail could’ve made the difference on Election Day.

It took Biden nearly one month to drop out of the 2024 race after his poor debate performance against Trump on June 27. When he exited the race on July 21 following mounting calls from his party to do so, he left Harris just over three months to build and execute a campaign to rival Trump.

Trump dominated Harris in battleground states, and the vice president ultimately lost the popular vote by more than 2 million.

Biden is also working to cement his legacy after a political career that spans more than 50 years, the Journal reports. The president has infused even banal White House events with retrospectives on his time in office and started sketching out the plans for his presidential library in Delaware, according to the outlet.

White House Spokesperson Andrew Bates told the Journal the president isn’t “spending his time litigating the election or engaging in counterfactuals.” Instead, Biden and Harris “are focused on delivering as many additional results for hardworking families as they can while finalizing the most groundbreaking record of any modern administration.”

Bates added that Biden admired his vice president’s campaign, while a spokesperson for Harris told the Journal the two still have a close working relationship.

The Independent has contacted the White House for comment.

This isn’t the first time reports have indicated Biden regrets how the 2024 presidential election played out. Last week, sources told The Washington Post Biden recently said he is confident he could have defeated Trump in November.

Despite this, he has also admitted to making mistakes throughout his presidency.

The president has privately expressed regret over appointing Merrick Garland as attorney general, saying he was too slow to prosecute Trump over the January 6, 2021 Capitol riots, the Post reported.

Biden has also admitted to “screwing up” the debate with Trump, though noted he does not regret participating, according to the Post.

The atmosphere at the White House is reportedly bleak as President Biden works to secure his legacy and promote the idea that he could have defeated former President Trump in the 2020 election. According to anonymous staffers, the mood is described as “depressing” as Biden faces challenges on multiple fronts.

Despite facing criticism and backlash from Republicans and some Democrats, Biden remains committed to his agenda and is determined to push through key initiatives such as infrastructure reform, climate change action, and healthcare reform. However, the ongoing battles in Congress and the increasingly divisive political climate have left many White House staffers feeling demoralized and frustrated.

As Biden continues to navigate these challenges, he is also facing mounting pressure to address issues such as inflation, rising crime rates, and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The president’s ability to effectively address these issues and deliver on his promises will ultimately determine his legacy and impact on the country.

Despite the difficult circumstances, Biden remains steadfast in his belief that he could have defeated Trump in the 2020 election. As he fights to secure his place in history, the president is determined to push forward and make a lasting impact on the nation. Only time will tell if his efforts will be successful in the face of mounting challenges and opposition.

  • The Saquon legend grows (and some depressing stuff) – NBC Sports Philadelphia

The Saquon legend grows (and some depressing stuff) – NBC Sports Philadelphia

Here’s the plan with this week’s Roob’s Eagles Stats: We’re going to load up with as many positive stats as we can until we get to the inevitable sobering stats to finish up.

After that game? We’ve got to mix it up. But we’ll start with the good so if you want to bail before the depressing stuff, it’s easy to do it!

    1. More Saquon Greatness

1A. Saquon Barkley’s 68-yard touchdown run was his fourth this year of at least 60 yards, tying the NFL record set by Jim Brown in 1963 and matched by Adrian Peterson in 2012. Barkley now has eight career TD runs of at least 60 yards, which means he has as many in 15 games as an  Eagle as he had in 76 games as a Giant. The only players in NFL history with more 60-yard TD runs than Barkley are Peterson (15), Brown (9) and Derrick Henry (9). Barkley also already has the Eagles career record. Bosh Pritchard had three in the 1940s, Wilbert Montgomery had three in the 1970s and Miles Sanders, Barkley’s college teammate, had three in 2019 and 2020.

1B. Barkley’s 1,838 rushing yards are 9th-most in NFL history through 15 games and most since Chris Johnson had 1,872 15 games into the 2009 season. He’s the only back in history with 1,800 rushing yards, a 5.9 average or higher and 13 rushing touchdowns through 15 games. Barkley needs 268 yards the last two weeks of the season to break Eric Dickerson’s NFL single-season record of 2,105 yards set in 1984.

1C. With 1,356 rushing yards and a 6.1 average since Week 7, Barkley is the first running back with 1,350 yards and a 6.0 average over any 10-game span since Peterson in 2012 (1,598, 6.8). Jim Brown, Eric Dickerson and Barry Sanders are the only other backs to achieve that.

    2. Piling up the yards

With 211 rushing yards Sunday, the Eagles now have 2,087 rushing yards in their last 10 games. It’s the first time they’ve averaged 200 rushing yards over a 10-game period since they averaged 214 yards in a 10-game span in 1950. The only other team with 2,087 or more rushing yards in any 10-game span since 1980 (within a single season) is the 2019 Ravens.

    3. First team in history

Barkley’s two touchdown runs Sunday gave him 13 this year to go along with Jalen Hurts’ 14. The Eagles are the only team in NFL history with two players rushing for 13 or more touchdowns. The Lions could join them, however. Montgomery and Gibbs each have 12 with two games left. This year’s Eagles and Lions are the only teams that have ever had two players with 12 rushing TDs.

    4. A.J. and Quick

Thanks to his 97 receiving yards, A.J. Brown increased his season total to 1,043 and joined Mike Quick as only the second Eagle with three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. Quick had five in a row from 1983 through 1987. Despite missing three games, Brown is now up to ninth in the NFL in receiving yards, and his 86.9 yards per game is 4th-highest and second to Justin Jefferson in the NFC.

    5. The safety dance

5A. With Reed Blankenship and C.J. Gardner-Johnson both picking up their fourth interceptions of the year, this is the first time in 30 years the Eagles have two safeties with at least four interceptions. In 1994, Greg Jackson had six and Mike Zordich four. Last time any two Eagles had four INTs in the same season was 2010, with Asante Samuel (7) and Dimitri Patterson (4). The Texans and Lions are the only other teams with two players with at least four INTs.

5B. Blankenship’s eight INTs are the most by an Eagle in his first 39 NFL games since Eric Allen had 13 from 1988 through 1990. His seven INTs since opening day last year are 5th-most among all safeties. The last undrafted player with more INTs in a season for the Eagles is Andre Waters, who had six in 1985. Patterson also had four in 2010. Blankenship’s seven INTs since the start of last year are the most by any undrafted player.

And now the maybe not so much fun – but just as fascinating – portion of this week’s Eagles Stats. Continue at your own risk!

    6. Five touchdowns? Seriously?

Jayden Daniels became the third quarterback in NFL history and the first rookie to throw five touchdown passes and rush for at least 80 yards in the same game. Cam Newton did it in 2015 against the Giants and Lamar Jackson in three weeks apart against the Rams and Jets. Overall, he’s the seventh rookie with five TDs in a game and the second to do it against the Eagles. Jameis Winston threw five TDs for the Bucs as a rookie against the Eagles in 2015 in his 10th NFL start.

    7. A quarter to forget

Daniels is the sixth QB to throw three touchdowns against the Eagles in a fourth quarter, following Wade Wilson of the Vikings in 1985, Joe Montana of the 49ers in 1989, Erik Kramer of the Bears in 1994, Boomer Esiason of the Cards in 1996 and Eli Manning of the Giants in 2017.

    8. This just shouldn’t happen

This was the first time in 25 years the Eagles lost a game in which they had five takeaways. In 1999, in a game started by Doug Pederson, they lost 16-15 to the Giants despite interceptions by Jeremiah Trotter, Troy Vincent and Bobby Taylor (for a touchdown) and forced fumbles by Bill Johnson and Mike Mamula. They also fell to 64-5 since 1988 when they’ve been plus-three or better. They had won 28 straight games when they won the turnover differential dating back to a loss to the Chiefs in 2021.

    9. Remember the Brian Finneran game?

This was also the first time in 25 years the Eagles lost a game after scoring 21 points in the first quarter. Last time it happened was the first game Andy Reid ever coached. The Eagles took a 21-0 lead over the Cards at the Vet on Doug Pederson touchdown passes to Luther Broughton and Duce Staley and a Staley TD run. But Jake Plummer and the Cards outscored the Eagles 25-3 the rest of the way. The Eagles also lost that game on the final play of the game, a 31-yard Chris Jacke field goal set up by Brian Finneran’s drop on a Pederson deep ball on a 3rd-and-4  just after the two-minute warning that turned into a Kwame Lassiter interception.

    10. The floodgates finally opened

The Eagles allowed two touchdown passes of 30 or more yards Sunday after not allowing any in their previous 12 games. Daniels had a 32-yarder to Terry McLaurin in the second quarter and the 49-yarder to former Eagle Olamide Zaccheaus in the fourth quarter. The only other 30-yard TDs the Eagles allowed this year were the first two weeks of the season – Jordan Love’s 70-yarder to Jayden Reed in São Paulo and Kirk Cousins’ to Darnell Mooney in Week 2 at the Linc.

In a thrilling game against the Dallas Cowboys, Saquon Barkley continued to solidify his status as one of the NFL’s rising stars. The dynamic running back put on a show, showcasing his incredible speed, agility, and power as he racked up over 200 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns.

But as Barkley’s legend grows, the New York Giants’ season continues to spiral downwards. Despite his heroics, the Giants fell short against their division rivals, dropping their third straight game and further dimming their playoff hopes.

It’s a bittersweet moment for Giants fans, who can take solace in the fact that they have a once-in-a-generation talent in Barkley, but must also come to terms with the harsh reality of their team’s struggles. As Barkley’s star shines brighter, the Giants’ future remains uncertain.

But for now, let’s marvel at the greatness of Saquon Barkley and appreciate the special talent that we are witnessing. The Saquon legend grows, even in the midst of some depressing times for the Giants.
