After keeping Mavericks afloat, gutsy Kyrie Irving deserves better than All-Star snub
As complaints about All-Star snubs go, Mark Cuban’s “NBA gonna NBA” wasn’t as pointed as Devin Booker’s charge that it’s “an entertainment, drama, political league,” but it’s pithier. Probably doesn’t rise to the level of a fine. And not because Cuban, first in league history in fines, is just a minority owner these days.
You can still get busted even if you’re not calling the shots anymore, though it probably takes all the fun out of it.
Anyway, Cuban was at least half right when he tweeted it was “JUST INSANE” that neither Luka Doncic nor Kyrie Irving made the All-Star team, shutting out the Mavs in the process.
Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving misses out on All-Star nod despite career-year in efficiency The facts are that Luka doesn’t really have a complaint coming. He’s only played 22 games because of a bad calf, and it’s questionable whether he’ll be back before the game on Valentine’s Day weekend.
Then again, if he was just going to stroll through his All-Star appearance as usual, maybe he’s good to go now.
But Kyrie getting stiffed as an All-Star? Who counted the coaches’ votes?
The Nets?
Kyrie’s old team might be justified holding a grudge after seeing how he’s played since the deadline deal two years ago. Not only did he help the Mavs to the NBA Finals last season, he’s been a model citizen since forcing his way out of Brooklyn. Makes it all the worse for the Nets considering how the trade worked out on their side.
Brooklyn got Dorian Finney-Smith, Spencer Dinwiddie, two second-round picks and a first in 2029. The Nets may yet make something out of all the seconds they’ve accumulated in deals involving those principals. As it stands, all they’ve got is D’Angelo Russell.
D-Lo is a nice player, but he’s no Hall of Famer.
Explains what Kyrie meant when asked about the deal after scoring 25 points in the Mavs’ 106-98 win over Oklahoma City a couple weeks ago.
“Best trade in the business, baby,” he told reporters. “We won that trade.
“I was bad goods.”
Some of us may have implied the latter point two years ago, and for good reason. Kyrie’s reputation had taken a major hit on and off the court. But, in the culture created and nurtured by Nico Harrison and Jason Kidd, he’s not only played at an All-Star level, he’s been the Mavs’ unquestioned leader.
Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving (11) wrestles for a loose ball with Memphis Grizzlies guard Scotty Pippen Jr. (1) during the first half of an NBA basketball game at American Airlines Center on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2024, in Dallas.(Smiley N. Pool / Staff Photographer) Despite a bulging disk in his back, Kyrie has held the Mavs together not only in Luka’s absence but those created by injuries to at least half the rotation.
You’d think a guy who’s keeping the reigning Western Conference champs afloat with exceptional numbers would get the benefit of the doubt with coaches.
Not so much, it turns out.
Before we go any further, here’s how it works: Once fans, media and players vote on two backcourt players and three frontcourt, with fans counting 50% and the players and media splitting the other half, head coaches pick seven reserves.
In the West, they went with Anthony Edwards and James Harden, the only guards, and Anthony Davis, Jaren Jackson Jr., Victor Wembanyama, Alpheren Sengun and Jalen Williams. Because it’s hard divvying up so many great players among so few spots, coaches give added weight to players from good teams.
Which is why the deeper West has just two teams with multiple representatives (Oklahoma City and the Lakers) while 75% of the East’s roster comes from Cleveland, Boston, Milwaukee and the Knicks.
Team record explains why the Hornets’ LaMelo Ball, who led all players in the fan vote, didn’t make the team even though he’s the league’s fourth-leading scorer. Domantas Sabonis (21.0 points, 14.6 rebounds, 6.5 assists) got hosed again because he plays for the Kings. Same with South Garland’s Tyrese Maxey in Philadelphia, Trae Young in Atlanta and Booker in Phoenix.
Young’s defensive rating as a turnstile doesn’t help, either.
No arguments here with most of the choices in the West. But there was still a way to include Kyrie.
For one thing, Harden’s numbers (21.7 points, 8.4 assists, 5.8 rebounds, 35.3% on 3s, 4.6 turnovers, 3.9 win shares) aren’t as good overall as Irving’s (24.2 points, 4.9 assists, 4.6 rebounds, 41.9% on 3s, 2.3 turnovers, 4.1 win shares) going into Friday’s game. The difference in the coaches’ minds, apparently, is that the Clippers’ record is better, so Harden gets the nod.
Not a good enough reason, but a better one than giving the Thunder a second rep.
Williams is a good player, but OKC has a lot of good players. Once Chet Holmgren returns, it’ll have its second-best one. This should tell you where the coaches got it wrong in picking the reserves.
Giving OKC’s third-best player its second spot on the All-Star team while denying the Mavs and their second-best player seems like bad math.
Especially considering the Mavs are 3-1 against the Thunder this season.
For the record: This isn’t the first time the Mavs whiffed as All-Stars. Happened all the time in the ‘80s, ‘90s and last decade. First, Dirk Nowitzki almost singlehandedly changed the perception of the Mavs for the better, then Luka picked up where he left off. Time for everyone to realize the Mavs aren’t a one-horse team anymore.

Kyrie Irving has been a key contributor to the success of the Dallas Mavericks this season, stepping up in the absence of injured star Luka Doncic. Despite his impressive performances, Irving was snubbed from the All-Star Game roster. After averaging 27.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 6.4 assists per game, Irving deserved to be recognized as one of the top players in the league. His fearless play and clutch performances have kept the Mavericks competitive in the tough Western Conference.
Irving’s snub is a disservice to his talent and hard work this season. He has proven himself as a top-tier player and should have been rewarded with an All-Star selection.
As the Mavericks continue to push for a playoff spot, Irving’s contributions should not go unnoticed. He has been a key factor in their success and deserves better than being left off the All-Star roster. It’s time for the league to recognize Irving’s talent and give him the recognition he deserves.

Why Pistons guard Cade Cunningham deserves to be an NBA All-Star this season
Roughly an hour before each Detroit Pistons game, Cade Cunningham emerges from the locker room for his pregame routine. Before a single shot gets taken and sometimes before Cunningham laces up his player-edition Nike G.T. Cuts, he connects with Pistons assistant coach Jarrett Jack at half court.
Jack, a former 13-year NBA veteran, is the coach closest to Cunningham and the one who works with him. To warm up, one tosses a basketball ball near the arena’s scoreboard, almost like a football, while the other waits for it to fall. They switch and the same thing occurs for a few minutes.
This might seem insignificant in the grand scheme of Cunningham’s career season. They are just tossing up a ball in the air. This act personifies Jack and Cunningham’s relationship — a bond that has contributed to Cunningham’s successful season.
“I don’t really know where it started from,” Cunningham told The Athletic recently. “I don’t know what made us start doing that. The throwing thing, it’s just for me to touch up, try to get as much rotation on the ball as I’m throwing it like a football. It’s fun. … It’s like our little (pregame) test.”
The Pistons (23-24) have improved this season with Cunningham elevating his play. But his offseason work, leadership and the resolve he developed from an arduous 2023-24 season have molded him into a formidable 2025 NBA All-Star candidate.
When Jack was hired in 2023, it didn’t take long for the two to connect.
“It wasn’t too long after that,” Cunningham said. “It was my first time having a veteran, NBA, long-time point guard that I was able to connect with that I knew of. I watched him play as a kid. So, it was easy for me to connect with him, ask him about pick-and-rolls or anything.”
The NBA All-Star reserves will be revealed Thursday, and Cunningham should be the first Pistons player to be selected since Blake Griffin earned the honor in 2019. He’d also be the first Detroit guard to earn an All-Star bid since Hall of Famer Allen Iverson in 2009. So what makes Cunningham an All-Star?
“First, just letting him know how lethal he is (in the post),” Jack said. “I thought he would venture down there occasionally, rather than being a little bit more deliberate in the spots he wants to operate from. I’m like, ‘Look man, the post is kind of an easy command center for you.’
“If they play you one-on-one, we’ll take that matchup every night, especially if we can run them into a pick-and-roll with a small or someone who doesn’t want to switch. And then if they double, you’re a willing passer, which allows rhythm shots for your role players and forces defenses to be in rotation.
“If they mess up, you can pick them apart three to five feet from the basket.”
In this video, 6-foot-9 Jaden McDaniels of the Minnesota Timberwolves is one of the league’s best perimeter defenders, but Cunningham takes him to the post and scores, just as Jack mentioned. Cunningham shoots his highest percentage (53.6) from less than five feet, which makes sense given his 6-foot-6 frame.
The more isolated looks he gets in the post, regardless of who’s guarding him, the better.
When Cunningham has a smaller defender on him in the post, he’s likely going to draw another defender, which causes the defense to be out of position.
In this play, Cunningham has a height advantage of five inches over Boston Celtics guard Payton Pritchard. Cunningham backs him down, forcing Luke Kornet to rotate over as a help defender.
Kornet leaves Ron Holland II open for a 3-pointer, and Cunningham skips it across the court for the easy triple by Holland. Consistently this season, Cunningham makes plays out of double-teams to create easy shots for his teammates.
And finally, watch how Cunningham creates offense for himself. He seeks out a mismatch with Darius Garland, who was initially guarding Tim Hardaway Jr. Cunningham gets Garland into a screen-and-roll situation, knowing Garland would switch to him.
Cunningham takes Garland into the post, is patient as Jarrett Allen rotates over to help, steps back and sinks a jumper over the outstretched arms of both Garland and Allen.
The Jack-inspired conversations that help lead to these actions are important to Cunningham.
“I already had a skill set down there (in the post),” Cunningham said. “It was something he said I could draw a lot more attention doing by getting comfortable down there throughout the game. First couple of games, I got straight to it and I felt like I was converting for us every possession early on.
“Then it kind of just stuck, I kind of just stuck with it and it became more and more a part of our offense.”
And it just isn’t the on-court improvements, Jack also is excited about Cunningham’s maturity.
“He’s a joy to be around,” Jack said with a smile. “There’s some guys in that position to maybe use their status to maybe not be so cool, or maybe not be so inclusive with the group. But he’s very much a part of the guys, part of this thing and I think it shows true to what he and what we went through last year.
“To meet that head-on, take it on the chin and now come back and take on a new challenge — and he’s got us potentially fighting for a playoff spot.”
Pistons assistant coach Jarrett Jack and guard Cade Cunningham analyze some video before a game. (Chris Schwegler / NBAE via Getty Images)Cunningham’s leadership has teammates having career seasons or the best seasons they’ve had in years.
Before Jaden Ivey broke his left fibula, he was on pace for career bests in points, field-goal percentage, 3-point percentage, rebounds and steals.
Malik Beasley is working on his second-highest scoring season and is on pace to shatter his previous high for made 3s in a season.
Cunningham will find out Thursday if he’s an All-Star for the first time.
The NBA announced its All-Star starters on Jan. 23 with Donovan Mitchell and Jalen Brunson earning the nod for the Eastern Conference backcourt. Cunningham is averaging more points, rebounds and assists than Mitchell with a better field-goal percentage. He also is posting more rebounds and assists than Brunson, while averaging one fewer point.
Factor in Cunningham’s impact on Detroit winning nine more games this season than it did the entire 2023-24 season, and he has a legitimate All-Star case. Entering Wednesday, the combo guard is averaging 24.8 points on 45.2 percent shooting (36.3 percent on 3-pointers), 9.4 assists and 6.4 rebounds. All are career highs.
He also has 20 double-doubles this season and his seven triple-doubles only trail Domantas Sabonis (eight) with LeBron James (nine) and Nikola Jokić (21). Both James and Jokić were selected as All-Star starters last week.
And Cunningham believes he should be in San Francisco playing with the best of the best on Feb. 16.
“Whenever I’m on the court every night, I feel like I’m the best player,” Cunningham said. “I try to do whatever it takes to help my team win, and my teammates have made me look great this year. I’m just trying to help my team win, and we’ll see what happens with it.”

Cade Cunningham, the talented rookie guard for the Detroit Pistons, has been turning heads with his impressive play and sheer talent on the court. With the NBA All-Star game just around the corner, it’s time to make a case for why Cunningham deserves to be among the league’s elite players in his very first season.First and foremost, Cunningham’s stats speak for themselves. Averaging 14.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game, he has shown that he can contribute in multiple facets of the game. His ability to score, rebound, and facilitate for his teammates makes him a versatile threat on the court.
Additionally, Cunningham has shown a maturity and poise beyond his years. Despite being a rookie, he has displayed a high basketball IQ and a knack for making the right plays in clutch situations. His leadership on the court has been instrumental in the Pistons’ recent success, and his impact on the team cannot be understated.
Furthermore, Cunningham’s impact goes beyond just his individual stats. He has helped elevate the play of his teammates and has been a key factor in the Pistons’ improved performance this season. His presence on the court has made everyone around him better, and his influence on the game is undeniable.
In conclusion, Cade Cunningham has proven himself to be a standout player in his rookie season, and his performance warrants serious consideration for a spot on the NBA All-Star team. His impressive stats, leadership qualities, and impact on the Pistons make a strong case for why he deserves to be among the best players in the league this season. Let’s hope the coaches and fans recognize his talent and vote him into the All-Star game.

On Tuesday afternoon, the 2025 class for the National Baseball Hall of Fame will be announced. Former Seattle Mariners star Ichiro Suzuki is going to get in, though it’s a question of if he will be a unanimous selection or not.
When he does get in, he’ll become the third player in history to wear an M’s cap on his plaque, joining Ken Griffey Jr. and Edgar Martinez.
One Mariners player that won’t get in on Tuesday is starting pitcher Felix Hernandez. With 183 ballots currently known, Hernandez has 26.2 percent of the vote. It’s impossible for him to get in on this ballot, but he’s achieved the five percent of the vote needed to stay on the ballot next year.
His former teammate Robinson Cano, speaking with Mariners on SI last week, said he’d like to see Hernandez get in in the future.
“He deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. We all know what he did in Seattle….”

The Magic of Magikarp: Why This Underdog Pokemon Deserves Your Respect
In the world of Pokemon, there are many powerful and iconic creatures that are beloved by fans all over the world. From the electric Pikachu to the fire-breathing Charizard, there are plenty of Pokemon that are known for their strength and prowess in battle. But there is one Pokemon that often gets overlooked and underestimated, despite its undeniable charm and potential – Magikarp. At first glance, Magikarp may seem like a weak and useless Pokemon. It flops around on land, unable to do much of anything besides splash about. Its movepool is limited, and its stats are abysmal. But what many people don’t realize is that Magikarp is hiding a secret power that, when unlocked, can transform it into one of the most formidable Pokemon in the game.
Magikarp’s true strength lies in its ability to evolve into Gyarados, a fearsome Water/Flying type Pokemon known for its incredible power and ferocity in battle. Gyarados is a force to be reckoned with, boasting high attack and special attack stats, as well as access to a wide range of powerful moves like Hydro Pump, Dragon Dance, and Earthquake. With the right training and strategy, Gyarados can sweep through entire teams of Pokemon with ease.

Magikarp is a symbol of perseverance and determination, as it struggles and perseveres through adversity to become something greater than anyone could have imagined. Its evolution into Gyarados is a testament to the power of hard work and dedication, showing that even the most seemingly insignificant creatures can rise to greatness with enough effort.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — It’s Christmas Day on Wednesday, so in the spirit of the holidays, which Colts player does former Colts head coach Chuck Pagano think deserves the most gifts this year?
Pagano said that linebacker Zaire Franklin is the most deserving this season.
Franklin leads the NFL with 151 tackles this season. He finished with seven tackles in the Colts win against the Titans on Sunday.
He has also played every defensive snap this season. Heading into the Week 16, there were only three other players that could say the same thing.
Franklin has done more than just rack up tackles. He has a career-high in interceptions (two) and forced fumbles (three). He’s also tacked on 2.5 sacks and six tackles for loss.
Franklin was asked on Christmas Eve what his favorite Christmas gift was.
He said his favorite present was back when he was in college.
The radio system in Franklin’s first car when he was in college was messed up. His wife, who was his girlfriend then, got him a car radio with a custom Bluetooth system. He installed it with one of his friends.
Franklin started by saying he wanted to get his “brownie points” up.
Franklin was in the holiday spirit on Christmas Eve as well, wearing a Santa and Mickey Mouse inspired bucket hat.

It can complement almost any other color, making it a versatile choice for interior design. Gray walls can create a sophisticated and elegant look in a room, especially when paired with bold accent colors.

It can evoke feelings of serenity and tranquility, making it a great choice for bedrooms and living rooms. In a world filled with constant stimulation and noise, the simplicity of gray can provide a welcome respite.
Furthermore, gray is a practical choice for practical reasons. It is less likely to show dirt and stains than lighter colors, making it a great option for homes with pets or children. Gray also has a timeless appeal, meaning that it won’t go out of style quickly, saving you money in the long run.
