  • As Dragon Age Fans Fear the Death of the Series, One Former BioWare Developer Offers Words of Reassurance: ‘Dragon Age Isn’t Dead Because It’s Yours Now’

Following layoffs at BioWare that saw the exit of many key developers of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, one former writer on the series has moved to reassure fans by saying: “DA isn’t dead because it’s yours now.”

This week, EA restructured BioWare to focus on Mass Effect 5 only. Some who worked on Dragon Age: The Veilguard were moved to projects at other EA studios (Game Developer reported that John Epler, Veilguard’s creative director, was sent to work on Full Circle’s upcoming skateboarding game Skate). Others, however, revealed they were laid off and were now seeking work.

The decision followed EA’s announcement that Dragon Age: The Veilguard had underperformed on its expectations for the long-awaited action RPG. EA said Dragon Age “engaged” 1.5 million players during its recent financial quarter, which was down nearly 50% from the company’s projections.

Notably, EA did not say the 1.5 million number was unit sales (Dragon Age: The Veilguard was also available as a part of EA’s Play Pro subscription service). Additionally, it’s not clear whether EA is counting a free trial of the game that was available through the cheaper EA Play subscription in the 1.5 million number either.

Either way, EA’s announcement, its restructure of BioWare, and confirmation of layoffs have combined to create the sense within the Dragon Age fandom that the series is pretty much dead. There is no DLC planned for The Veilguard, and BioWare’s work on the game came to an end last week with what sounded like its last major update.

But Dragon Age: The Veilguard senior writer Sheryl Chee, who was moved from BioWare to work on Iron Man at Motive, took to social media to offer words of hope.

“I’m now with Motive,” Chee began. “It’s been a hard two years seeing my team get chipped away and having to still keep going. But I’m still employed, so there’s that.”

Then, in response to a fan who lamented the death of Dragon Age, Chee replied to say the series now belongs to the fans who will keep it alive with their own contributions.

“So a cool French woman dropped a cool quote from Camus on me today: ‘In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.’ (I mean, who does resistance like the French, right?) We’re going through it right now. It’s a lot, everywhere…

“But DA isn’t dead. There’s fic. There’s art. There’s the connections we made through the games and because of the games. Technically EA/BioWare owns the IP but you can’t own an idea, no matter how much they want to.

“DA isn’t dead because it’s yours now.”

Then: “So someone just reposted my thing saying they’ll write a giant AU and that’s what I’m talking about. If DA has inspired you to do something, if it sparks that Invincible summer, then it’s done it’s job, and it has been my greatest honor to have been a part of that.”

Dragon Age began life with 2010’s Dragon Age: Origins, which was followed up just a year later by Dragon Age 2. Dragon Age: Inquisition released three years later, in 2014. But it took a decade for the latest sequel, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, to come out.

In September, former Dragon Age executive producer Mark Darrah, who left BioWare in 2020, revealed that Dragon Age Inquisition had sold over 12 million copies, and “massively” oversold EA’s internal projections for the game.

EA has yet to outright say Dragon Age is dead, but it’s hard to see a new game in the series any time soon, if ever, given what’s happened to BioWare itself and the full focus on Mass Effect 5. As for Mass Effect, EA said a “core team” at BioWare is developing the next Mass Effect game under the leadership of veterans from the original trilogy, including Mike Gamble, Preston Watamaniuk, Derek Watts, Parrish Ley, and others. “While we’re not sharing numbers, the studio has the right number of people in the right roles to work on Mass Effect at this stage of development,” EA told IGN.

As Dragon Age Fans Fear the Death of the Series, One Former BioWare Developer Offers Words of Reassurance: ‘Dragon Age Isn’t Dead Because It’s Yours Now’

In recent years, Dragon Age fans have expressed growing concerns about the future of the beloved RPG series. With BioWare’s focus shifting to other projects and the lack of concrete updates on the next installment, many feared that Dragon Age may be on the brink of death.

However, one former BioWare developer has stepped forward to offer words of reassurance to anxious fans. In a recent interview, the developer, who worked on previous Dragon Age titles, emphasized that the series is far from dead.

“Dragon Age isn’t dead because it’s yours now,” the developer stated. “The beauty of a series like Dragon Age is that it belongs to the fans just as much as it does to the developers. Your love and passion for the world and characters are what keep it alive.”

The developer went on to urge fans to continue supporting the series, whether through fan art, fan fiction, or simply by spreading the word about the games. They also hinted at exciting developments on the horizon for Dragon Age, assuring fans that there is still plenty to look forward to.

So, for all the Dragon Age fans out there feeling anxious about the future of the series, take heart. Dragon Age isn’t dead – it’s simply evolving, with the help of its dedicated fanbase. As long as fans continue to show their love and support for the series, there’s no limit to where the world of Thedas can go.

  • Ninja Gaiden 4 announced at Xbox Developer Direct showcase

As promised, Microsoft unveiled a new, unannounced game during its Xbox Developer Direct on Thursday: Team Ninja’s Ninja Gaiden is back with a new mainline entry, a revival of a franchise that’s been dormant since 2012’s Ninja Gaiden 3. In a surprise reveal, Ninja Gaiden 4 is being co-developed by Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, developer of the Bayonetta franchise and Nier: Automata.

Ninja Gaiden 4 will be released in fall 2025 on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, and it’ll be available through Game Pass.

The game will be set after the events of Ninja Gaiden 3 in a largely abandoned Tokyo that has been overwhelmed by demons and other servants of the Dark Dragon. Players will once again assume the role of master ninja Ryu Hayabusa, in addition to a second, new protagonist: Yakumo, a new master ninja and a member of the rival Raven clan.

Yakumo will employ two play styles: the Raven style and the Nué style, the latter of which will let the ninja take on multiple enemies at once using far-reaching attacks. Developers from Team Ninja and PlatinumGames say that classic Ninja Gaiden moves and combat will be part of the game as well, so get ready to Inazuma Drop fools over and over again.

Despite the new protagonist and speedy new play style, developers said that Ninja Gaiden 4 will preserve the dark, hardcore atmosphere of the series.

That’s not the only Ninja Gaiden-related announcement Team Ninja had to share during Thursday’s Xbox Developer Direct, however. The studio also stealth-dropped Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, a new version of Ninja Gaiden 2 that offers a massive visual upgrade of the original 2008 Xbox 360 game, rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5. In addition to protagonist Ryu Hayabusa, the Black re-release lets players battle as Ayane, Momiji, and Rachel.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black is available now on PS5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.

In an exciting announcement at the Xbox Developer Direct showcase, it was revealed that the highly anticipated Ninja Gaiden 4 is in development! Fans of the beloved action-adventure series can look forward to another thrilling installment filled with intense combat, challenging enemies, and a gripping storyline.

The Ninja Gaiden franchise has a long history of delivering fast-paced gameplay and stunning visuals, and Ninja Gaiden 4 promises to continue that tradition. With advanced graphics and gameplay mechanics, players can expect an immersive experience that will push their ninja skills to the limit.

Stay tuned for more updates and details on Ninja Gaiden 4 as development progresses. In the meantime, get ready to unleash your inner ninja and prepare for the ultimate battle in this exciting new chapter of the series. • Ninja Gaiden 4 From Team Ninja And Platinum Games Revealed At Xbox Developer Direct

Today, during the Xbox Developer Direct, Koei Tecmo announced Ninja Gaiden 4, a new 3D action game that continues the story of Ryu Hayabusa. The game will be made in collaboration between Koei Tecmo’s internal Team Ninja team and Platinum Games.

The story follows Ryu and newcomer Yakumo–a ninja from the Raven clan, the rival clan to Hayabusa–as he battles against the Dark Dragon. Tokyo has fallen under a permanent storm called the Rain Of Darkrot, and the two must defeat the dragon once and for all in order to dispel the storm and save the city.

Yakumo, the new protagonist of Ninja Gaiden 4.

Yakumo will use two different fighting forms–Raven Style and Nue Style–against the Divine Dragon Order, who act as law enforcement in this alternate version of Tokyo, as well as a horde of demons defending the Dark Dragon. Both Ryu and Yakumo will employ slightly different styles, but both will have access to classic moves like the Izuna Drop and the Flying Swallow.

This new Ninja Gaiden adventure is one of three new Ninja Gaiden games announced for 2025. The Xbox Developer Direct also announced Ninja Gaiden II Black–a remake of Ninja Gaiden 2 from the original Xbox–while Dotemu and The Game Kitchen unveiled the metroidvania style Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound last month.

Ninja Gaiden 4 is set to launch in Fall 2025 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.

  • Ninja Gaiden 4 Announced at Microsoft’s Xbox Developer Direct 2025

Ninja Gaiden is back in a big way, with Ninja Gaiden 4 revealed as the mystery fourth game shown at Microsoft’s Xbox Developer Direct 2025. It’s due out fall 2025 for Xbox Series X and S, PC via Steam, and PlayStation 5 and is a day one Xbox Game Pass launch title.

Ninja Gaiden 4 is in development at PlatinumGames, creator of Bayonetta and Nier: Automata, with Team Ninja collaborating. Expect a new main playable character, called Yakumo, although Ryu Hayabusa does appear in the story.

Not only that, but Koei Tecmo has shadow-dropped Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, an Unreal Engine 5 remake of the 2008 original. It’s out now across console, PC, and Xbox Game Pass.

Team Ninja’s infamously challenging Ninja Gaiden series has a long association with Xbox. The developer’s reboot of the action series launched first on Xbox in 2004, propelling master ninja Ryu Hayabusa into the mainstream. Ninja Gaiden Black, considered one of the greatest action games of all time, launched the following year.

Ninja Gaiden 2 came out in 2008 published by Microsoft Game Studios for the Xbox 360. Ninja Gaiden 3 followed in 2012 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Since then, fans have had the critically panned spin-off Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, and, more recently, Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection, a compilation of Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, and Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge.

Publisher Koei Tecmo revived interest in Ninja Gaiden with the announcement of Ninja Gaiden Ragebound, a brand-new side-scrolling spin-off due out later this year. But the main event is Ninja Gaiden 4, which finally continues Ryu Hayabusa’s story 13 years after Ninja Gaiden 3 came out.
