  • Back in Action: Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz try to charm their way in a boring, predictable and unfunny action flick

The film industry has always had a soft spot for reunions, and Back in Action is no exception, reuniting Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz in a bid to recapture their past glories. However, this film feels more like an easy, breezy ride down memory lane rather than a memorable cinematic experience.

Back in Action stars Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx in lead roles.

In this latest offering, Emily (Diaz) and Matt (Foxx) are former intelligence agents now grappling with the mundane yet chaotic life of suburban parenting. Their characters, portrayed with an endearing chemistry by Foxx and Diaz, hark back to their action-packed days with a longing that feels both genuine and humorous.

From the outset, the film establishes its comedic tone, which, surprisingly, delivers some unexpected laughs. Foxx and Diaz, despite initial doubts about their on-screen rapport, manage to create a fun and natural dynamic that carries the film through its more predictable moments. Their performances are the highlights, showing that both actors still have the charisma and talent to make even the most familiar tropes enjoyable. Diaz, in particular, proves that her magic on screen has not diminished, even if the script she’s given does little to challenge or showcase her full capabilities.

The plot revolves around the couple’s past catching up with them when their identities are compromised, forcing them back into the world of espionage, this time with their children in tow. This premise sets up a series of action sequences that, while not particularly thrilling or innovative, are competently handled. The action is underscored by a soundtrack that feels both nostalgic and slightly mocking of the genre’s clichés, with songs like Etta James’s At Last playing during less-than-glorious moments, adding a layer of irony that sometimes works and at other times feels forced.

However, the film’s attempt to blend family dynamics with high-octane action falls flat. The dialogue, meant to be witty, often resorts to tired sitcom clichés, missing the mark for both humour and depth. The screenplay by Brendan O’Brien lacks the sharpness needed to elevate the material beyond the ordinary, leaving much of the comedic heavy lifting to the stars themselves.

Supporting performances vary in impact. Andrew Scott, as the antagonist, seems somewhat misplaced, while Glenn Close and Jamie Demetriou venture into over-the-top territory, their efforts more cringe-inducing than captivating. Their attempts at scene-stealing are more about volume than substance, which unfortunately detracts from the film’s overall enjoyment.

While Back in Action serves as a delightful reminder of why we love Foxx and Diaz, the film itself doesn’t offer much to remember. It’s a light, breezy watch that won’t linger long in one’s memory but provides enough entertainment for a pleasant evening. It’s a testament to the stars’ enduring appeal rather than a landmark in action-comedy filmmaking. In essence, it is an easy, low-effort comeback vehicle that proves Diaz’s charm is intact, though she might want to choose her next projects more judiciously to truly shine once more.

Get ready for some high-octane thrills and lackluster humor, because Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz are back on the big screen in their latest action flick, “Back in Action.”

In this subpar movie, Foxx and Diaz play a pair of charming yet cliched characters who are thrown into a series of predictable and unexciting action sequences. From car chases to fight scenes, there’s nothing in this film that hasn’t been done a thousand times before.

Despite their best efforts, Foxx and Diaz struggle to breathe life into their flat characters, relying on tired jokes and over-the-top performances to try and salvage the lackluster script. It’s a shame to see such talented actors wasted on a film that feels like a cheap knockoff of better action movies.

Overall, “Back in Action” is a forgettable and uninspired film that fails to deliver on its promises of excitement and humor. Save your money and skip this one at the box office.

  • Cameron Diaz Reflects on Early Retirement: ‘Best 10 Years of My Life’

    • Cameron Diaz has said her decadelong retirement from acting was “the best 10 years” of her life.
    • Diaz stopped acting in 2014 but recently returned to star in “Back In Action” with Jamie Foxx.
    • Diaz isn’t the only celebrity to have walked back on the decision to retire.

Cameron Diaz has said the decade she spent in retirement from acting was “the best 10 years” of her life, but she thinks she is now ready to get back into the industry.

Appearing on “The Graham Norton Show,” the 52-year-old actor reflected on her decision to take an extended hiatus from her career.

“Oh my God, I loved it. It was the best 10 years of my life,” Diaz said. “I was just free to just say, ‘I’m a mom, I’m a wife, I’m living my life.’”

She said that stepping back from acting “made sense for my family,” and after a while, “people stopped asking” her to take on roles.

“It was so lovely,” she added.

However, Diaz, who stars in the new Netflix movie “Back in Action” alongside Jamie Foxx, said she realized that getting to entertain people for a living is a “priviledge” which ultimately led her to unretire.

“I just said to myself, if I just let this go, all of this goodwill, all of this which I got to build over so much time, the passion that I have for entertaining people and making movies, if I don’t engage in that again be grateful for it, I would be a fool.”

As for whether her return to acting is permanent, Diaz said: “This is maybe the beginning, maybe I’ll tiptoe in, maybe I’ll go gung-ho, we’ll see. It’s here and I’m really grateful for it.”

Per her IMDb page, she has two upcoming projects: She will return to voice Princess Fiona in “Shrek 5” and will also star in a new Jonah Hill-helmed film titled “Outcome.”

A representative for Diaz did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, which was sent outside regular working hours.

Diaz isn’t the first actor to have walked back on the decision to retire.

Jim Carrey, 63, announced in 2022 that he was retiring from acting after “Sonic the Hedgehog 2.” But he returned to work last year, reprising his role in the third film.

Speaking to the Associated Press, Carrey said: “I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And I just, I bought a lot of stuff, and I need the money, frankly.”

Diaz became one of Hollywood’s biggest stars after making her debut opposite Carrey in the superhero comedy film “The Mask.”

The film went on to become one of the top 10 highest-grossing films of 1994, making more than $350 million at the worldwide box office.

Over the next few years, Diaz landed more and more roles, starring in the likes of “There’s Something About Mary,” “Charlie’s Angels,” and “The Holiday.”

Discussing how she spent the time since her last starring role in 2014’s “Annie” remake, Diaz told the “Still Watching Netflix” YouTube channel that she had focused on raising her kids.

“That was what I was putting most of my focus on if I was doing anything other than just sort of being a mom and living my day-to-day,” Diaz said. “And that was pretty much it. I’m just trying to stay alive, just like every other mother. I’m just trying to keep it going.”

Diaz married Benji Madden of the rock band Good Charlotte in 2015. They welcomed their daughter, Raddix, in 2019 and their son, Cardinal, in 2024.

In a recent interview with People magazine, Cameron Diaz opened up about her decision to step away from acting and embrace early retirement. The 48-year-old actress, who last appeared on screen in the 2014 film “Annie,” revealed that she has no regrets about walking away from Hollywood.

Diaz explained that after spending over two decades in the spotlight, she felt it was time to prioritize other aspects of her life, including her health and relationships. She shared that she has been enjoying her time away from the industry, focusing on personal growth and wellness.

“I just decided that I wanted different things out of my life. I had spent so many years working and hustling, and I just wanted to take a step back and enjoy the simple things,” Diaz said.

Reflecting on her decision to retire, Diaz described the past 10 years as the “best of her life.” She emphasized that while she loved her time in the entertainment industry, she is grateful for the opportunity to explore new passions and experiences.

Diaz’s positive outlook on retirement serves as a reminder that sometimes stepping away from a successful career can lead to even greater fulfillment. As she continues to embrace this new chapter in her life, fans can only hope that she will share more wisdom and insights along the way.

  • Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz ‘Took Turns’ Supporting Each Other (Exclusive)

Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx have got each other’s backs.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Back in Action Director Seth Gordon says the duo supported each other throughout filming — when Diaz, 52, marked her return to acting with her first movie in over a decade and Foxx, 57, had a medical emergency during production in April 2023.

“They took turns in a really deep way supporting each other,” the filmmaker, 48, says of Diaz and Foxx.

“Anyone who was on set will tell you [Jamie] was the biggest cheerleader and hype man for [Diaz], and really for everybody involved, but especially for her,” he continues. “So she got to return the favor in that way spiritually.”

Back in Action stars Foxx and Diaz as former CIA spies Matt and Emily, “Years after giving up life as CIA spies to start a family, Emily and Matt find themselves dragged back into the world of espionage when their cover is blown,” an official Netflix synopsis explains.

Foxx and Diaz previously starred together in 2014’s Annie — the actress’ last film before Back in Action — and they first shared the screen in 1999’s Any Given Sunday.

According to Gordon, getting to collaborate with Foxx and Diaz was an experience like no other. He describes the first time he met with the duo as a “holy s— moment.”

“[They were] totally finishing each other’s sentences … and seeing their chemistry and that energy together was really inspiring,” Gordon says.

Foxx and Diaz’s close friendship, Gordon tells PEOPLE, even inspired him to put more comedy into the Netflix project.

“It made me want a little less action and a little more hanging out, so that they could play,” he explains. “Because whenever we got to do those scenes, it just breathed life into me and the crew.”

“When you see people just crushing it, it’s inspiring for everybody, right? … So I tried to do that as much as possible, keeping in mind that the word ‘action’ is in the damn title, so we can’t remove too much stuff,” Gordon continues. “But they’re amazing together.”

Back in Action is currently available to stream on Netflix.

Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz have always had each other’s backs, both on and off screen. In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, the pair opened up about their close friendship and how they have “taken turns” supporting each other throughout their careers.

Foxx and Diaz first worked together on the 2010 film “Annie,” where they played the roles of Will Stacks and Miss Hannigan, respectively. Since then, they have remained close friends and have continued to support each other in their respective projects.

“We have always had each other’s backs,” Foxx said. “Whether it’s promoting each other’s films or just being there for moral support, we have always been there for each other.”

Diaz echoed Foxx’s sentiments, adding that they have a special bond that goes beyond just being co-stars. “Jamie is like a brother to me,” she said. “We have been through so much together and I know that I can always count on him for anything.”

The pair also revealed that they have “taken turns” supporting each other throughout their careers, with Foxx helping Diaz with her music career and Diaz helping Foxx with his acting projects.

“We have always been there for each other, no matter what,” Foxx said. “It’s just the kind of friendship we have.”

Fans can expect to see more of Foxx and Diaz’s friendship in the future, as they are currently working on a new project together. While they remained tight-lipped about the details, they promised that it would be something special.

“We can’t wait for everyone to see what we have in store,” Diaz said. “It’s going to be something really special and we are so excited to share it with the world.”

Stay tuned for more updates on Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz’s upcoming project, and be sure to catch them in “Annie” for a dose of their on-screen chemistry.

  • Is Netflix’s New Cameron Diaz Movie, ‘Back In Action,’ Worth Watching?

Netflix has released a new original movie that has immediately rocketed to #1 on the service. That would be Back in Action, an appropriately named spy thriller that marks the return of Cameron Diaz to acting for the first time since 2014’s Annie, Sex Tape and The Other Woman, the last year she made any film.

Unfortunately, it appears she may have not chosen the right project.

Back in Action has a dismal 24% on Rotten Tomatoes from dozens of critics, quite low even for often low-scoring Netflix original movies. The audience score is…better, a 64%, but in the context of usually-higher audience scores, that’s not amazing. Here’s the synopsis of the movie, which also stars Jamie Foxx:

“Former CIA spies Emily and Matt are pulled back into espionage after their secret identities are exposed.”

It’s a little hard to tell from that description but yes, this is an action-comedy, not just a straight spy thriller. It’s directed by Seth Gordon, who previously did Horrible Bosses, Identity Thief and Baywatch. Unlike Diaz he has been working since those movies (they were all almost a decade ago, or more), doing episodes of shows like The Night Agent, For All Mankind and The Good Doctor.

I was actually surprised to realize that Cameron Diaz has not acted since 2014. She has recently commented on this, and how much she loved being “retired.” From a Graham Norton interview:

“Oh my God, I loved it. It was the best 10 years of my life.” She said she was “just free” to be a wife and mother and have a more private life, and I think we can all respect that. She said she turned down roles until people just stopped asking over the last ten years.

    What changed? Here’s her explanation:

“It’s just a privilege to do this. I thought to myself, if I just like, let this go away, all of this goodwill that I got to build over so much time, the passion that I have for entertaining people and making movies that make people smile and laugh and have a good time… if I don’t engage in that again… then I would be a fool.”

She also has another movie coming up, Apple TV+’s “black comedy” Outcome with Keanu Reeves and Jonah Hill, which will be directed by Hill.

So, Cameron Diaz is back in action for Back in Action, but it may not have been the role she should have picked, judging by the quality of the film.

Netflix has released a new movie starring Cameron Diaz called ‘Back In Action,’ and fans are wondering if it’s worth watching. With Diaz’s return to the screen after a hiatus, many are curious to see if the film lives up to the hype.

The movie follows Diaz as a retired CIA agent who is forced back into action when her former partner goes missing. As she navigates through dangerous situations and faces off against adversaries, viewers are taken on a thrilling ride filled with action and suspense.

But is ‘Back In Action’ worth watching? Reviews have been mixed, with some praising Diaz’s performance and the film’s fast-paced plot, while others criticize the lack of depth in character development and predictable storyline.

Ultimately, whether or not ‘Back In Action’ is worth watching depends on your preference for action-packed thrillers and your admiration for Cameron Diaz. If you’re a fan of Diaz’s previous work and enjoy a good action flick, then ‘Back In Action’ may be worth checking out. But if you’re looking for a more nuanced and thought-provoking film, you may want to skip this one.

  • Cameron Diaz found a good reason to return to acting after a decade

    CNN
     —

Cameron Diaz is, quite literally, “Back In Action.”

That’s the title of her new Netflix film with Jamie Foxx, her first in ten years.

During a recent appearance on “The Graham Norton Show,” Diaz and said Foxx is the reason she returned to Hollywood.

“I had 10 years of not paying attention to anything,” she said. “Not accepting any advances and then I got this script and thought that maybe it was time.”

She had high praise for her costar.

“If I was going to leave my family for 10 hours a day, I wanted to do it with the most talented man in the entertainment business,” Diaz said.

The pair are old friends, having costarred together in “Any Given Sunday” in 1999 and “Annie” in 2014.

Diaz, who began her career as a model and starred in multiple hit movies like “There’s Something About Mary,” hasn’t been twiddling her thumbs.

In addition to being a wife and mother (she and husband, musician Benji Madden share two children), she is also a successful author and businesswoman.

“I loved those 10 years for me and my family,” she said of her time away from movie sets. “But I thought, ‘If I let this go away, if I don’t engage again, and if I don’t give it chance, I am a fool.’”

The actress sounds grateful for the return.

“It is a privilege to make films, and we are all so lucky to do what we do,” she said on the show. “That the door was even open for me after a decade was amazing.”

After a decade-long hiatus from acting, Cameron Diaz has found a compelling reason to make her comeback to the big screen. The 49-year-old actress, known for her roles in iconic films such as “There’s Something About Mary” and “Charlie’s Angels,” has announced that she will be starring in a new project that she simply couldn’t pass up.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Diaz revealed that the script for the upcoming film resonated with her on a personal level. “I read the script and immediately felt a connection to the character. It’s a story that I believe needs to be told, and I knew that I had to be a part of bringing it to life on screen,” she shared.

While Diaz did not divulge any specific details about the project, she expressed her excitement about stepping back into the world of acting after taking a step back to focus on other aspects of her life. “I’m thrilled to be returning to something that has always brought me so much joy and fulfillment. It’s a new chapter for me, and I can’t wait for audiences to see what we’ve been working on,” she added.

Fans of Diaz can look forward to seeing her back on the big screen in the near future, as she gears up for what promises to be an exciting and emotional journey in her acting career. Stay tuned for more updates on this highly anticipated project!

“I don’t know how I view it. It’s hard to say,” Diaz said when asked if Back in Action marks a permanent return. “If I say it then it becomes this thing. I reserve the right to say no to doing a movie ever again, and I reserve the right to say yes if I decide to.”

Madden and Diaz have famously kept their relationship private since they began dating in 2014 and got married less than a year later.

They went on to quietly welcome Raddix in 2020 and Cardinal in 2024.

Since then, the family of four has been spotted out and about only a handful of times — the last time being in August.

In a recent interview with her brother-in-law, Joel Madden, Diaz explained that therapy has been the secret to her long-lasting marriage.

“It’s what we depend on, so you have that commitment to work on it,” the “Holiday” star said, explaining that it keeps her and Benji from doing “the same thing over and over.”

She further explained that they are more “self-aware” and “a little bit more equipped to hopefully come out with a different outcome” next time.

The Golden Globe nominee clarified that they both have to “want … to do it.”

She insisted, “You can’t be in a marriage and have a family if … both people are not 100 percent every day. Nobody can be 99 and the other one be 100.”

Today marks 10 years since Benji Madden and Cameron Diaz tied the knot, and the musician couldn’t help but celebrate the milestone by sharing a sweet selfie with his wife on social media. In the photo, the couple can be seen smiling at the camera, radiating love and happiness.
