  • Dick Van Dyke didn’t evacuate home amid LA fires, using gas generator

    Safe and sound.

Dick Van Dyke has not evacuated his Malibu home as the LA fires continue to tear through Southern California, the legendary actor’s wife, Arlene Silver, revealed.

In an Instagram Live on Jan. 12, Silver, 53, shared that the $8 million house she shares with the 99-year-old “Mary Poppins” star is still standing despite the deadly blazes, which destroyed other celebrity abodes in Malibu and adjacent areas.

Sitting in her car, Van Dyke’s wife of almost 13 years said that the guest house on the Malibu property did catch fire but only sustained minimal damage.

Dick Van Dyke’s wife revealed she and the star didn’t evacuate amid the deadly LA fires.
The couple’s Malibu house is still standing and only sustained minor damage to the guest house.

Still, with the Palisades fire having destroyed most of the coastal Pacific Palisades community, the couple are without power and have been using a gas generator.

“Keeping Dick warm and entertained has been the two things that have been my top priority, so, you know, we don’t have power […] or regular electricity, so we don’t have Wi-Fi,” Silver said, adding that the pair have been relying on her camper to cook and charge their devices.

Silver also shared that even with the many natural disasters Malibu continually faces, she and Van Dyke have no desire to relocate.

“Dick is more comfortable here than anywhere else,” she said. “It’s easier to take care of him here.”

Describing the famed actor as a “trooper,” Silver added, “I don’t know of any other person of, you know, senior citizen age that would put up with this.”

Just last month — and mere weeks before his 99th birthday — the star was evacuated from the Los Angeles celebrity enclave after the Franklin fire threatened his home.

“It was coming from the hill, you could see it,” Van Dyke said in an interview on “Today” at the time.

“And oh my God, and we got out of here,” he added. “I was trying to crawl to the car, I had exhausted myself, I couldn’t get up.”

Luckily, Van Dyke’s neighbors came to his rescue.

“Three neighbors came and carried me out and came back and put out a little fire in the guest house and saved me,” he revealed.

After the terrifying evacuation, Van Dyke posted on Facebook confirming that he and Silver made it to safety along with their animals, except their cat Bobo, who escaped as they fled the flames. Thankfully, the couple found the feline when they returned home.

Dick Van Dyke Didn’t Evacuate Home Amid LA Fires, Using Gas Generator

Legendary actor Dick Van Dyke has made headlines for his decision to stay put in his Malibu home despite evacuation orders due to the raging wildfires in the area. The 96-year-old actor revealed that he is using a gas generator to power his home and keep himself safe amidst the chaos.

Van Dyke, known for his roles in classic films like Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, has been praised for his resilience and determination to ride out the fires on his own terms. While many in the area have chosen to evacuate, Van Dyke has chosen to stay and protect his property with the help of his trusty gas generator.

Fans and fellow celebrities have expressed their concern for Van Dyke’s safety, but the actor remains confident that he will be able to weather the storm. As the fires continue to rage, Van Dyke’s decision to stay put and rely on his gas generator has sparked a debate about the best course of action in times of crisis.

Whether you agree with his decision or not, there’s no denying that Dick Van Dyke is one tough cookie. Stay safe, Mr. Van Dyke!

  • An inside into Dick Van Dyke’s relationship with famous brother and grandson

Dick Van Dyke was not the only member of his family to grace the big screen. The actor’s younger brother, the late Jerry Van Dyke, was often forgotten in the shadows of the Mary Poppin’s star before he forged his own career path in television. Dick also has a star-studded grandson, the actor Shane Van Dyke.

One of Jerry’s earliest TV appearances was courtesy of his older brother and arose in 1962 during a two-part episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show. Jerry played Stacey Petrie, the comedian brother of Dick’s iconic character Rob Petrie.

While Dick was famed for major roles in the likes of the Broadway show and film Bye Bye Birdie and the stellar movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Jerry starred in a slew of shorter projects, such as The Judy Garland Show and the game show Picture This. The late-performer’s breakout arose in 1989 when he landed the role of Luther Van Dam in Coach. The character earned him four Emmy nominations and an invitation of the Late Show With David Letterman

Outside of their professional work, the brothers shared a close bond. During an interview with the Los Angeles Times in 2015, the duo, who were both in their 80s, opened up about their relationship. “I looked up to him as a kid,” said Jerry about his big brother.

Dick went on to add: “The main thing about Jerry is that he’s funny from the inside out.”

The interview came about as the brothers were set to reunite on screen in the ABC sitcom The Middle, where they played squabbling siblings.

Jerry approached Eileen Heisler, the creator and executive producer of the show, with the idea of the brothers starring alongside each other.

Eileen said: “We always sort of knew that Dick and Jerry had an old funny relationship. They are very different personalities. Our show is all about family dynamics. We wanted to make it a fun thing about a brothers’ dynamic that didn’t change no matter how old you are.”

During the interview, the duo revealed that due to their six-year age gap, they wearn’t that close while growing up in Danville, Ill.

“We were too far apart in age,” Dick said. “We loved each other, but I was out of high school before he got in.”

Jerry added: “We are becoming closer,” he said. “I’m really getting to know him better at this age.”

“It’s because we have been working together more,” said Dick.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Shirley Ann Jones, and his two children, daughter Jerri Lynne and son Ronals, both from his first marriage to Carol Johnson.

It seems possessing the talent to capture an audience on screen runs in the family as Dick’s grandson, Shane, is no stranger to a Hollywood blockbuster. Shane is the child of Dick’s son Barry and has starred alongside his grandfather in various TV shows including Diagnosis Murder and Murder 101. The 45-year-old has also featured in the likes of Titanic II, Paranormal Entity and most recently Don’t Worry Darling

Discussing how his children and grandchildren have featured on episodes of The Dick Van Dyke Show, Diagnosis: Murder and The New Dick Van Dyke Show, the actor told CNN 1998: “Barry’s teenage sons were on, and I had my daughter Stacy on the show, too. That’s carrying nepotism to its ultimate!.”

Dick Van Dyke is a legendary actor who has captivated audiences for decades with his charm, humor, and talent. But what many people may not know is that he comes from a family of entertainers, including his famous brother Jerry Van Dyke and his grandson Shane Van Dyke.

Jerry Van Dyke, who sadly passed away in 2018, was also a talented actor and comedian known for his roles on shows like “Coach” and “The Dick Van Dyke Show.” Despite both brothers being in the entertainment industry, they always remained close and supportive of each other’s careers. Dick once said in an interview, “My brother Jerry was always my hero. He was a wonderful comedian and a wonderful actor.”

As for Shane Van Dyke, he followed in his grandfather’s footsteps and pursued a career in acting. He has appeared in various films and TV shows, including the popular “Titanic II” and “A Haunting in Salem.” Dick has always been proud of his grandson’s accomplishments and has been supportive of his career every step of the way.

The Van Dyke family legacy lives on through Dick, Jerry, and Shane, each leaving their own unique mark on the entertainment industry. Their bond and love for one another are a true testament to the power of family and the impact it can have on one’s success and happiness.

Legendary college basketball broadcaster Dick Vitale will be back calling games for the first time in nearly two years when Duke visits Wake Forest on Saturday, Jan. 25, from Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston Salem, N.C.

On Jan. 8, the 85-year-old Vitale announced that his vocal cords are cancer-free and that he was given the green light to return to calling games for ESPN.

“I am absolutely ecstatic and I can’t believe this is happening after going through five major vocal cord surgeries, 65 radiation treatments and chemotherapy for six months,” said Vitale in a statement.

“It’s been a very tough journey, but all of the prayers and messages from the beautiful fans have inspired me. I can’t thank Jimmy Pitaro and all of my ESPN colleagues who I consider my second family enough for the love they showed me through such a tough time. I just hope that I can offer the people some basketball insights that can bring even more excitement to the game.”

This cancer battle was just the latest that Vitale has gone through in recent years. He was first diagnosed with melanoma in 2021, and then with lymphoma a few months later. He then announced in July 2023 that he had been diagnosed with vocal cord cancer, which he overcame a few months later. But then last summer, Vitale announced that he had been diagnosed with cancer a fourth time in his lymph nodes. He’s been recovering from that ever since, and he underwent surgery to remove cancerous lymph nodes in July.

Vitale has largely been away from ESPN amid his cancer battles, but he returned briefly in 2021 to an incredibly emotional moment at a game in Las Vegas.

The last game Vitale called was the international broadcast of the 2023 men’s national championship game between San Diego State and UConn.

Vitale has been at ESPN almost since the beginning and has been a staple in the sport for decades. He called the very first basketball game for the network after it launched, and he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008.

Over 44 years since his ESPN debut, Vitale will be able to get back to doing what he loves most.

    That’s awesome, baby.

Dick Vitale, the legendary college basketball broadcaster, is set to make his long-awaited return to the airwaves after nearly two years away. The beloved commentator, who has been battling cancer, recently announced that he is officially cancer-free and ready to get back to doing what he loves most – calling the action on the court.

Vitale, known for his enthusiastic and passionate style of commentary, has been sorely missed by fans and colleagues alike during his absence. His infectious energy and iconic catchphrases have made him a staple of college basketball broadcasts for decades, and his return is sure to be met with great excitement and anticipation.

Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks during his battle with cancer, Vitale has remained positive and determined throughout his journey. His resilience and optimism have inspired countless people around the world, and his return to broadcasting is a testament to his strength and perseverance.

As Vitale prepares to step back behind the microphone, fans can expect to hear the same level of enthusiasm and passion that has endeared him to so many over the years. His love for the game and his unparalleled knowledge of college basketball make him a true treasure in the world of sports broadcasting, and his return is sure to be a welcome sight for fans everywhere.

  • Dick Vitale’s return to broadcasting put on hold after accident

Hall of Fame broadcaster Dick Vitale will not be returning to broadcasting next week after all.

Vitale announced Saturday that an accident at his Florida home has created “near-term physical limitations” and will prevent him from returning to broadcasting next week as planned.

The news comes one day after ESPN announced Vitale would call the Duke-Wake Forest men’s college basketball game on Saturday, Jan. 25 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston Salem, North Carolina, his first time on air since 2023.

Vitale, 85, has battled four different types of cancer in the past three and a half years. Most recently, he underwent surgery in the summer of 2024 after a biopsy of a lymph node in his neck showed cancer. Vitale announced on Jan. 8 that he was cancer-free.

Vitale said the accident at his home was not cancer-related.

“I’m devastated that I won’t be courtside with my ESPN buddy Dave O’Brien and with all the players and fans, especially because of the overwhelming response I received when news of my planned return was announced,” Vitale said. “I was anxiously awaiting the chance to feel the excitement and energy of a college basketball environment for the first time in nearly two years.”

Vitale added that he is expected to make a full recovery, but no timetable for his return to broadcasting has been made.

“Despite this latest setback, I feel blessed to have the support of my family, friends and ESPN teammates,” Vitale said. “I’m a lucky guy and as I’ve said before, I will continue to do whatever it takes to get back to calling the sport I love.”

In 2021, Vitale was diagnosed with lymphoma, months after he had multiple surgeries to remove melanoma. In 2022, he announced he was cancer-free. Then in 2023, he was diagnosed with vocal cord cancer and underwent radiation.

Vitale’s last game assignment was nearly two years ago — on April 3, 2023, calling the international broadcast of the San Diego State vs. UConn national championship for ESPN. He announced he was cancer-free for the third time in November 2023.

Vitale joined ESPN during the 1979-80 season, just after ESPN’s launch, and called the network’s first major NCAA basketball game on Dec. 5, 1979. He has gone on to call well over 1,000 games and in September 2024, he was inducted into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame.

We all know and love Dick Vitale for his passionate, energetic commentary on college basketball games. However, his highly anticipated return to broadcasting has been put on hold after an unfortunate accident.

Vitale was involved in a car accident that left him with minor injuries, but doctors have advised him to take some time off to fully recover. This means that fans will have to wait a little longer to hear his iconic voice back on the airwaves.

While we are all disappointed by this news, the most important thing is Dick Vitale’s health and well-being. We wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to the day when he can once again grace our screens with his infectious enthusiasm for the game.

In the meantime, let’s send our thoughts and prayers to Dick Vitale as he focuses on healing and getting back to doing what he loves most. Get well soon, Dick! #PrayersForDickVitale

Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame broadcaster Dick Vitale will return to the air for the first time since 2023 to call the Duke at Wake Forest men’s college basketball game on Saturday, January 25 (4:30 p.m. ET, ESPN). The legendary voice of college basketball, who has battled four different types of cancer in the past three and a half years, announced that he was cancer free on Jan. 8.

Vitale will call the ACC matchup alongside play-by-play commentator Dave O’Brien at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston Salem, N.C.

“I am absolutely ecstatic and I can’t believe this is happening after going through five major vocal cord surgeries, 65 radiation treatments and chemotherapy for six months,” said Vitale. “It’s been a very tough journey, but all of the prayers and messages from the beautiful fans have inspired me. I can’t thank Jimmy Pitaro and all of my ESPN colleagues who I consider my second family enough for the love they showed me through such a tough time. “There is no better ambassador for the sport of college basketball than Dick Vitale. “After all of the battles and challenges that Dick has been through over the past several years, we should all feel lucky that we’re able to have him back courtside again,” said David Ceisler, vice president of production. “He has fought tirelessly for everybody else and it is so rewarding to see that he’s won another battle.”
