How did Alexander the Great die?
Alexander the Great died in June 323 B.C. in Babylon, in what is now Iraq, at age 32. By that time, he had conquered an empire that stretched from the Balkans to India. This empire collapsed shortly after his death, with his generals and officials carving it up into different kingdoms.
But how did Alexander the Great die? The answer has been a long-standing mystery in history and archaeology, but historical texts provide a few possibilities.
There are a number of ancient accounts of Alexander’s death, but most come from centuries later. The writers Plutarch (who lived circa A.D. 46 to 120) and Arrian (who lived circa A.D. 88 to 160) both said that after a night of drinking, Alexander had a fever that gradually worsened in the days leading up to his death. An account written by Diodorus Siculus (who lived during the first century B.C.) claims that Alexander fell seriously ill after drinking and died shortly afterward.
Quintus Curtius Rufus, a writer who lived in the first century A.D., reiterates that Alexander died shortly after a night of drinking. Curiously, he stated that seven days after Alexander’s death, his body had shown no sign of decay.
However, the surviving accounts of Alexander’s death were written centuries after he died.
“We can never take our sources completely at face value, in part because all our surviving biographies about Alexander were composed hundreds of years after he died,” Jeanne Reames, director of the ancient Mediterranean studies program at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, told Live Science in an email.
The ancient writers had access to “sources that were closer to the time — and which have since become lost — but they were not ‘cut-and-pasting,’” Reames said, noting that all of the ancient writers and the sources they used had their own agendas.
What killed Alexander?
The mystery of what killed Alexander the Great is complicated by another factor: His body has never been found. That means there’s little physical evidence that scientists can study to figure out how he died.
However, modern-day scholars have provided a wide range of theories to explain what killed Alexander. In a paper published in 2019 in the journal Ancient History Bulletin, Katherine Hall, a senior lecturer at the Dunedin School of Medicine at the University of Otago in New Zealand, proposed that Alexander the Great died of Guillain-Barré syndrome, a neurological disorder in which a person’s immune system attacks their peripheral nervous system.
This condition could have left Alexander in a deep coma, which ancient doctors may have mistaken for death, Hall noted, adding that this may have been why Alexander’s body didn’t decay for so long. She also noted that accounts written by Plutarch and Arrian claim that Alexander was cognizant enough to be issuing orders until shortly before he fell unconscious. This is also common in people who have this disorder, Hall noted.
Another theory is that Alexander died of typhoid fever, a disease caused by the bacterium Salmonella enterica Typhi. The illness described by Plutarch and Arrian is similar to that of typhoid fever, Ernesto Damiani, a professor of physiopathology at the University of Padova in Italy, told Live Science in an email. Some historical records also suggest that at times, Alexander was in a stupor, which is “a state of drowsiness from which the subject can be awakened by elementary stimuli such as questions but into which he immediately falls again,” Damiani said, noting that this is also commonly seen in typhoid fever patients.
Reames notes that Alexander’s general health “was poor, thanks to multiple wounds, including one that almost killed him in India and probably left him with a partially collapsed lung.” While his general health was poor Reames thinks that Typhoid fever is the best culprit for this death with malaria also being a possibility.
There are many more theories as to what killed Alexander, including pancreatitis, West Nile virus and chronic traumatic encephalopathy.
Was Alexander the Great poisoned?
Another theory is that Alexander was poisoned. Adrienne Mayor, a research scholar at Stanford University who has written extensively about Alexander, thinks this is the most likely cause of death. “Poisoning was immediately suspected by [Alexander’s] closest companions, according to all the ancient historians who described [Alexander’s] death” Mayor told Live Science in an email, noting that Alexander’s mother, Olympia, also believed that he was poisoned.
Historical records don’t mention anyone else falling ill, Mayor said. If Alexander had an infectious disease, others in Babylon also should have gotten sick at around the same time. Mayor says that the symptoms Alexander experienced matched poisoning from strychnine, these include high fever, which is mentioned by both Plutarch and Arrian. It also includes speechlessness caused by the jaw muscles being extremely stiff. Both Arrian and Plutarch mention that before Alexander lost consciousness he couldn’t speak, noting that Alexander’s commanders walked by with Alexander watching them but unable to talk. Another symptom that matches is paroxysmal contractions of muscles causing great pain. Diodorus Siculus mentions how Alexander suffered great pain after drinking from a cup of wine. Strychnine is a plant that grows in the highlands of India and Pakistan, so this poison could have arrived at Babylon through trade routes, Mayor said.
Paul Doherty, an independent scholar who has researched and written extensively on Alexander, also thinks poison killed Alexander. “My belief is that Alexander the Great was deliberately poisoned,” Doherty told Live Science in an email. Historical records indicate that “Alexander was growing increasingly despotic and paranoid,” Doherty said. Arsenic may have been the poison of choice, Doherty noted, and Ptolemy I Soter, who ruled Egypt after Alexander’s death, may have been the culprit.
Will any new evidence emerge?
Although it’s unlikely that Alexander’s body will be found, more ancient historical records may emerge.
“The most promising possible source of new material is the virtual unravelling of the rolls from the Library at Herculaneum,” Hall said in an email. These are scrolls that became carbonized after Mount Vesuvius erupted in A.D. 79. Technologies such as high-resolution CT scans and artificial intelligence are being used to read and decipher these scrolls.
There are “thousands of these rolls, so new documents might still arise,” Hall said, but the process of scanning the rolls and reading them “is very slow and painstaking and might take decades to complete.”

‘I’ve Earned It At This Point’: Scream And Heart Eyes’ Mason Gooding Shares How He Wants To Die In A Horror Movie, And It’s So Funny
Ahead of Scream’s Mason Gooding coming back for Ghostface’s next appearance, the actor is the leading man in a Valentine’s Day treat among upcoming horror movies, Heart Eyes. Halloween has Michael Myers, Christmas has Krampus and Thanksgiving has John Carver, and from now on, V-Day will have the Heart Eyes Killer. When CinemaBlend spoke to Gooding and his co-lead Olivia Holt, the Scream actor had a hilarious reaction to being a frequent horror movie survivor… thus far anyway.
Prior to Heart Eyes, Gooding has become somewhat of a Scream King having played Chad Meeks-Martin in both 2022’s Scream and as part of the Scream 6 cast a year later, which had him surviving Ghostface on two occasions and officially coming back for the seventh movie, which will include Neve Campbell’s return. The actor was also in last year’s nostalgic horror comedy Y2K, which saw him surviving, too. When I mentioned his impressive track record for a frequent horror star, Gooding shared his thoughts on finally dying in a horror movie (someday). In his words:
Oh, I’m just praying someone has the gall to kill me [in a horror movie]. I feel like I’ve earned it at this point, but for some reason my characters have a level of immortality that just eludes my desire to be killed, on screen, of course. I would love to die naked for some reason. That just sounds about right. I don’t know how it’ll happen.
Well… that’s one way to go. It sounds like Mason Gooding has been thinking about how he’d like to go, and had a really funny and fully fleshed out answer. I especially loved seeing his co-star, Olivia Holt, react with one-word:
Unreal.
Don’t you worry, Mason Gooding had more to his personal pitch on how he’d like to die in a horror movie. As I said, his answer was quite well thought out.
You don’t think that that would make a lot of sense? Like, we’re naked for so much of our lives. It only makes sense that we would die the same way we were brought into this world: naked and afraid.
Look, it’s a fantastic idea, and of course, if it did happen, he wouldn’t be the first actor to die in a horror movie in his birthday suit. Perhaps one of the most famous kills in horror movies was in 1960’s Psycho, when Janet Leigh’s Marion Crane is murdered while in the shower, a moment which was set to an unforgettable score and some Hershey’s chocolate syrup and has lived on immortally ever since. Will Mason Gooding survive the Heart Eyes Killer? You’ll have to see for yourself when the movie comes out next weekend, just one week ahead of Valentine’s Day. Heart Eyes comes from writers Christopher Landon of the Happy Death Day movies and Freaky alongside It’s A Wonderful Knife’s Michael Kennedy and Philip Murphy. The movie was directed by Werewolves Within’s Josh Ruben.
When it comes to Heart Eyes, the mysterious killer haunts couples on V-Day, however, in the case of Gooding’s Jay and Holt’s Ally, they become perplexed when they are stalked by him when they are not lovers, but coworkers, who briefly pretended to be. It’s great to see Mason Gooding lead his own horror film this time around in Heart Eyes, and despite his desire to die on screen, I hope he keeps the streak alive for years to come.
Mason Gooding, the breakout star of the hit horror film ‘Scream’, has been making waves with his hilarious and charismatic personality. In a recent interview, the actor shared his thoughts on how he would like to meet his demise in a horror movie, and it’s both hilarious and endearing.“I’ve earned it at this point,” Gooding quipped with a playful smile. “I want to go out in a blaze of glory, screaming my head off and giving my best ‘heart eyes’ to the camera. It would be the perfect combination of terror and comedy, don’t you think?”

Hunderttausende Fans, Tradition seit 115 Jahren, Titel und Krisen. Für das alles steht Deutschlands langjährige Nummer zwei im Fußball: Borussia Dortmund. Je nachdem, welchen Zeitraum man betrachtet, gehört der Verein aus Nordrhein-Westfalen sogar auf eine Stufe mit internationalen Topvereinen. Diese Zeiten sind nun aller Voraussicht nach erst einmal vorbei. Der Riese taumelt und muss an diesem Samstag, 1. Februar, um 15.30 Uhr beim ebenfalls kriselnden Kellerkind aus Heidenheim ran. David Klotzbücher, ein Heidenheimer mit schwarz-gelbem Herzen, ordnet die aktuelle Lage des BVB ein und blickt ebenfalls auf das kommende Spiel auf dem Schlossberg.
Die Liebe zu Dortmund kommt durch die Familie
Der Bezug zu dem fast 500 Kilometer entfernten Verein kommt bei Klotzbücher nicht von ungefähr: „Meine Familie kommt aus der näheren Umgebung von Dortmund. Dadurch habe ich Ende der 2000er-Jahre immer mehr den BVB verfolgt“, so der 21-Jährige, der für die TSG Schnaitheim die Fußballschuhe schnürt und in der Vergangenheit häufig Spiele des FCH besucht hat. Die besonders erfolgreichen Jahre des BVB kamen anschließend schnell. Die zwei Meisterschaften und der Pokalerfolg unter Trainer Jürgen Klopp erlebte Klotzbücher hautnah mit. Bereits damals war ihm klar: Für ihn gilt diese Liebe ein Leben lang.
Dortmund braucht einen Unterschiedsspieler, der das Team auch mal tragen kann.
David Klotzbücher, BVB-Fan seit über 15 Jahren
Doch auch schlechte Jahre machte der Heidenheimer mit den Dortmundern mit. Vor allem in den vergangenen Spielzeiten entfernte sich der BVB immer mehr von dem Zweikampf mit dem FC Bayern München um die Meisterschaft. „Mittlerweile ist es wohl doch eher das Ziel, mit Ach und Krach die Champions-League-Plätze zu erreichen, was mit der Qualität eigentlich selbstverständlich sein sollte“, so Klotzbücher.
Zurückzuführen sei dieser Leistungsabfall auf die stetige Misswirtschaft im Verein, sagt er. Borussia Dortmund nimmt zwar viel Geld durch Transfers junger Toptalente ein, durch den Erlös wird jedoch anschließend kein funktionierendes Team zusammengestellt. Auch fehle es seit dem Abgang der BVB-Legenden Marco Reus und Mats Hummels im vergangenen Sommer an Führungsspielern. „Diese Lücke kann gerade kein Spieler schließen. Dortmund braucht mal wieder einen Unterschiedsspieler, der das Team auch mal tragen kann“, so Klotzbücher und kritisiert die Qualität des derzeitigen Kapitäns Emre Can.
Wenn sich dort zusammengerissen wird, haben wir eine Chance, dass es wieder besser wird.
David Klotzbücher, BVB-Fan
Im vergangenen Jahr stand der BVB nach 2013 erneut im Champions-League-Finale. Für Klotzbücher nur ein Trostpreis: „Es war schön, jedoch verschleierte die Finalteilnahme auch das bescheidene Abschneiden in der Liga mit Platz fünf. Das sollte nicht der Anspruch von Dortmund sein.“ Laut des Heidenheimers muss sich auch einiges in der Chefetage der Dortmunder tun. „Man hat das Gefühl, Ricken, Mislintat und so weiter wettern nur gegeneinander, anstatt miteinander für den Verein zu arbeiten“, so der junge BVB-Fan. „Wenn sich dort zusammengerissen wird, haben wir eine Chance, dass es wieder besser wird.“
Letztes Spiel unter Tullberg
In der laufenden Saison startete der BVB mit einem Experiment: Mit dem ehemaligen Spieler Nuri Şahin saß ein junger, unerfahrener Trainer auf der Bank. In 27 Spielen holte der 36-Jährige gerade einmal eineinhalb Punkte im Schnitt. Aktuell liegt der Verein auf einem ernüchternden elften Platz. Das war zu wenig für die Vereinsoberen und auch für Klotzbücher: „Leider ist man damit krachend gescheitert. Tullberg zeigt gerade ja, was in dieser Mannschaft steckt.“ Für die letzten beiden Spiele (2:2 gegen Werder Bremen, 3:1 gegen Shakhtar Donezk) war Interimstrainer Mike Tullberg verantwortlich. Dort machte der Übergangstrainer seine Arbeit laut Klotzbücher ordentlich.

Mit Niko Kovač holen sich die Dortmunder einen Coach ins Boot, der bereits beim FC Bayern München, Eintracht Frankfurt und VfL Wolfsburg an der Seitenlinie stand. Mit den Bayern wurde er Meister und Pokalsieger, Letzteres gelang ihm auch mit der Eintracht. Klotzbücher stimmt die Verpflichtung optimistisch: „Ich denke, er passt ganz gut zu uns. Der FCH ist seither auf Relegationsplatz 16 abgerutscht, der einstige Titelaspirant Dortmund dümpelt auf Rang elf und hat sich vergangene Woche vom glücklosen Neu-Trainer Nuri Sahin schon wieder getrennt.
Wohin also des Wegs, FCH? “Das Ziel ist der Klassenerhalt, und das werden wir auch schaffen”, ist Marvin Pieringer im Gespräch mit SWR Sport überzeugt. Der 25-jährige Stürmer, einer der beiden Heidenheimer Torschützen beim Hinspiel in Dortmund, setzt trotz der verzwickten Lage auf dem Schlossberg auf die Ruhe im Umfeld des Vereins und den nach wie vor völlig intakten Teamgeist: “Wir waren und sind immer ganz nah beeinander, können uns in die Augen schauen und ehrlich miteinander umgehen”, beschreibt “Pieri”, wie er genannt wird, das mannschaftliche Binnenverhältnis, “das müssen wir weiter beibehalten”.

Nach der langen Niederlagenserie vor Weihnachten war der Start ins neue Jahr zunächst bestens geglückt: Dem 2:0 daheim gegen Union Berlin folgte das Last-Minute-3:3 in Bremen, der 1.FC Heidenheim wähnte sich 2025 wieder auf gutem Weg. Doch dann folgten die beiden bösen Rückschläge gegen St.Pauli (0:2) und in Augsburg (1:2). Die sportliche Situation ist weiterhin ernst, sehr ernst. Zumal zuletzt die Kellerkonkurrenz immer wieder eifrig punktete.

Am besten gleich gegen die ruhmreiche Borussia aus Dortmund: “Es ist immer schön, wenn so große Vereine zu uns nach Hause kommen”, sagt Pieringer, “Dortmund macht auch gerade eine schwierige Phase durch. Deshalb müssen wir uns nicht verstecken und wollen den Heimsieg einfahren”.
Der FCH steht aktuell mit nur 14 Zählern aus 19 Spielen da, bis zum Nichtabstiegsplatz sind es bereits vier Zähler. Damals im September, als der FCH nach zwei Siegen aus zwei Spielen als Tabellenführer nach Dortmund gefahren ist. Eine schöne Erinnerung, mehr aber auch nicht: “Wir wissen um was es geht”, so Pieringer, “jetzt heißt es Punkte sammeln”.
