  • Dana Reeve grieved some losses before her husband died

Editor’s note: CNN Films brings the premiere of “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story” to CNN at 8 p.m. ET/PT Sunday.

    CNN
     —

Dana Reeve was devoted to caring for her husband, Christopher Reeve, as noted in the new documentary “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story.”

In her diary, Dana expressed a part of her experience that caregivers often hesitate to say out loud, as read by her son, Will, in the documentary.

“I’ve been studying the difference between solitude and loneliness, telling the story of my life to the clean white towels taken warm from the dryer and held to my chest. A sad substitute for a body pulled in close,” Dana wrote about caring for her husband after his near-fatal horseback riding accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down. “The whole man took his last walk away from me five years ago today, leaving only mind, soul, heart and heartache behind.”

Dana and Christopher Reeve married in 1992. The actor died in 2004 due to heart failure, and she died in 2006 of lung cancer.

The “Superman” actor died at age 52 in 2004 due to heart failure, nine years after his accident, while Dana Reeve died of lung cancer in 2006.

Most of us have acknowledged grief connected to the death of family and other loved ones. But there is another kind of grief, one experienced by Dana and legions of others, that is less commonly explored among caregivers.

This is the grief one feels when processing the fact that their loved ones have significantly changed, and as a result, their lives will likely never be the same. This is the grief Dana was experiencing when she spoke about missing Christopher’s warm hands or the sailing trips that they could no longer take.

Many hesitate to express such grief to avoid undermining the affection and dedication they feel about the loved one they are caring for. But failing to express it can have negative consequences for the well-being of the caregiver, experts say, and ultimately stop the caregiver from finding meaning and purpose in the experience of care.

“For so many, there is this feeling of ‘Well, he is still here, I should be fine. I should be hopeful,’” said Allison J. Applebaum, professor of geriatrics and palliative medicine and director of the Center for Caregiving at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City and author of “Stand by Me: A Guide to Navigating Modern, Meaningful Caregiving.” “But just because he is still here doesn’t mean you aren’t sad about the many losses in your relationship.”

“Giving caregivers the language of grief, and describing what they are experiencing as grief, can be really powerful,” Applebaum said. “It gives validation and structure to the experience.”

    Understanding your grief

Clinical psychologist Allison J. Applebaum has had her own experience with grief as a caregiver for her late father, composer Stanley Applebaum, here in November 2013 in New York.

In her practice, Applebaum helps her patients better understand which types of grief they are experiencing.

She said there are two types of grief that is experienced before the death of the person they care for. The first is “anticipatory grief,” which describes the sadness and anxiety about that person dying. The second is “present-oriented illness-related grief,” which Dana Reeve was expressing in her diary.

Applebaum encourages caregivers to express this grief to themselves, a mental health professional and to others. Doing so is key to adjusting to life as a caregiver and, ultimately, finding deeper value and connection in the experience.

“I strongly believe as a clinical psychologist and someone who has been in this experience myself, that if we don’t allow ourselves to grieve and express negative emotions that bottle up, then we don’t have as much access to the meaningful parts of the care experience and the possibilities to grow from it,” she said. “Grief is a portal to meaning and growth, allowing you to connect to the things that are still there.”

Courtney Martin is a caregiver to her father, Ron, who has dementia, as well as two daughters, who are 8 and 11.

    Caregiver grief isn’t usually a one-time experience.

Courtney Martin said she’s been “experiencing micro-griefs of the little deaths along the way.” She’s a caregiver-in-residence at The Sandwich Club, an online community and resource for sandwich caregivers, and cares for her father with dementia and her two daughters in El Cerrito, California.

Up until recently Martin has been reading spiritual books to her dad, a ritual that connected her to their long history of talking about sacred practices and the meaning of life. But one day he told her he didn’t want her to read to him out loud anymore.

As a sandwich caregiver, finding time and space to work through such mini-grief moments can be tricky. But Martin understands that she must find time to process these feelings, otherwise she won’t be able to show up for her dad or her kids. “I cry in my car, and on hikes, and I’ve gotten into listening to music really loud, which is more a way to express anger and sadness,” she said.

While she does express some of this grief to her daughters, ages 8 and 11, she said she’s careful to protect them from the extremes of her pain.

“I want to teach them that the depth of my grief is related to the depth of my love for him. That is a profound life lesson,” she said. “At the same time, the depth of my sadness can be so intense, and I don’t want to expose them to all of it.”

Aaron Barnhart has come to terms with his identity as a caregiver for his wife, Diane, who has Lewy body dementia. Here, he assists Diane with walking in August 2014 in their Evanston, Illinois, home.

Like most things in life, grief is best dealt with through conversation, whether it’s talking to mental health professionals, friends or family. And for many, the first step is coming to terms with the caregiver identity and saying it out loud.

This was the case for Aaron Barnhart, who cares for his wife, Diane, in Evanston, Illinois.

“A big turning point for me came when I was willing to tell other people that I casually knew that I was a caregiver,” said Barnhart, who writes about caring for his wife with Lewy body dementia in his newsletter, The Diane Project. “One day I was out with my running group and someone asked me what I did, and I realized that I was a full-time caregiver for my wife and I needed to talk about that.”

“This was after a year of some of the most wrenching changes you can go through with your loved one. Someone who you have spent so much of your life with begins to change profoundly from cognitive disease.”

While Barnhart had spoken to close friends and family about his caregiving, there was something particularly healing about being able to say it matter-of-factly with acquaintances. The self-identifying as a caregiver more publicly led to talking about it more and accepting it more, which, in turn, led to some relief from his grief.

Other caregivers process some of their hard feelings alongside the loved one they care for.

Robbyn and Vince Washington found having regular and honest conversations important to their relationship. Vince became a dedicated caregiver to his wife following an accident in 2022.

In 2022, Robbyn Washington had an accident that led her to a diagnosis of quadriplegia, which changed her life, and that of her husband, Vince, overnight. He became a dedicated caregiver, entering “uncharted waters” that have been both emotionally and physically challenging to navigate, even as they both hold hope for Robbyn’s recovery.

The Snellville, Georgia, couple found that having regular and honest conversations was an important way for Vince to maintain his fortitude and process his grief.

“One of the things that Vince does well is that he comes to me, and we talk about our weakest moments … and the frustrations we are feeling,” Robbyn said. “Sometimes we may get angry for no apparent reason, and when that happens, we will sit down and talk through it, so it doesn’t have time to fester. It doesn’t feel like therapy, but it really is.”

One of the biggest barriers to experiencing grief is the sheer busyness of life as a caregiver. When there is not enough time in the day to take care of basic needs, who has time for emotions? Effectively processing grief requires bandwidth and time to rest that’s only possible if the caregiver asks for help.

“We’ve found that caregivers’ communities are often waiting to help, but people are uncomfortable about asking how they can help or worry that will burden the caregiver,” said Tia Newcomer, CEO of CaringBridge, a social network designed for caregivers to share updates and seek support.

Beside easing the burden, asking for help pushes caregivers to figure out what they need, contemplate what they are going through and even reckon with their own vulnerability in their new role.

“The more you can talk about your need for help and not be ashamed of it, the grief is lessened and lightened,” Newcomer said.

Applebaum isn’t just an expert in this area. She’s also lived it.

As she was caring for her own dad, she found that discussing her grief allowed her to find the courage and vulnerability she needed to connect with her father in his dependent state — and connect with herself in her new role.

“It helps to remember that grief is love disguised, and feeling it allows us to connect with the love that is there,” she said. “Ultimately, we wouldn’t be grieving if there wasn’t any love.”

At Christopher Reeve’s funeral, his wife, Dana, spoke of this very love, one that sat side by side with her grief. “I promised to love honor and cherish him till death did us part. Well, I can’t do that, because I will love, honor and cherish him forever.”

Elissa Strauss is a journalist who writes about parenting and caregiving. She is the author of “When You Care: The Unexpected Magic of Caring for Others” and the newsletter Made With Care.

Dana Reeve, the wife of late actor Christopher Reeve, faced a series of heartbreaking losses before her husband passed away in 2004.

First, Dana was diagnosed with lung cancer in August 2005, just nine months after her husband’s death. She underwent surgery and chemotherapy and was declared cancer-free in 2006.

However, in June 2006, Dana’s father passed away from prostate cancer. She was devastated by this loss, but continued to be a strong advocate for cancer research and awareness.

Tragically, Dana’s own battle with cancer returned in June 2007, and she passed away in March 2006 at the age of 44.

Despite facing immense grief and hardship, Dana Reeve remained a pillar of strength and grace throughout her life, leaving behind a powerful legacy of resilience and courage.

  • Taiye Bello, Gophers women’s basketball player from 2016-20, has died

Taiye Bello, one of the top rebounders in Gophers women’s basketball history, has died, her family announced Friday. She was 26.

She will be greatly missed by all who experienced her light. We ask that you respect our privacy in this time of mourning.”

  • Michael Strahan’s Daughter Could Have Died ‘Within Weeks’ of Cancer Diagnosis Without Treatment, Says Her Doctor (Exclusive)

On October 28, 2023, Isabella Strahan underwent emergency surgery to remove a brain tumor, which her neuro-oncologist, Dr. David Ashley, describes as “somewhere between the size of a golf ball and a tennis ball.”

It was her 19th birthday and Isabella was in the fight of her life.

Diagnosed with medulloblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer that occurs most often in children and teens, Isabella survived. “Untreated, she would have been dead within the next few weeks, I’ve no doubt,” says Dr. Ashley, the Director of the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University, who oversaw her care. “I’ve been impressed by her resilience.”

As is her family, including dad, Good Morning America co-anchor, Michael Strahan, twin sister Sophia, and their mom Jean Muggli (the couple divorced in 2006 after seven years of marriage). “Everyone came together to pause their life for mine,” says Isabella in an exclusive interview in this week’s PEOPLE. “They gave me a lot of strength.”

While being treated for cancer, she shared her story in real-time in a series of YouTube vlogs. Now, along with her family, she is featured in an upcoming ABC special: Life Interrupted: Isabella Strahan’s Fight to Beat Cancer, airing Feb. 5 at 10 pm and then on Disney + and Hulu, on Feb 6.

The experience was harrowing at times, like when she underwent grueling rounds of chemotherapy, (“My first round felt like a giant root canal,” she recalls. “My jaw hurt so bad like someone had ripped l my teeth out.”) After an MRI revealed an infection at the surgical site, she had two follow-up surgeries and part of her skull was replaced with a titanium mesh plate.

But her story is also one of never giving up hope.

“Through it all, she was a champ,” says Michael, also an analyst on FOX NFL Sunday, who reveals he also saw a new side of his twin daughters. (He also has older kids from his first marriage: Michael Jr., 30, and Tanita, 33.)

“I always thought Isabella was the more gentle one,” he says. “But she’s the toughest of anybody in the family — tougher than the football-playing dad. And then I saw a different side of Sophia, when it was time to be gentle and caring and take care of her sister.”

As Isabella notes, “Sophia was good at making me feel like I was 19 years old.”

She still has some side effects, including balance issues, impaired vision and memory gaps, but she remains vigilant and undergoes scans every three months. According to Dr. Ashley, “She’s got a better than 90 percent chance of this tumor never coming back.”

As Isabella puts it, “It feels like it’s a routine part of my life now. And I definitely see, especially with my vlog, the impact that can come from sharing my experience. I want to be a voice.”

  • Cecile Richards, former Planned Parenthood president, has died

    CNN
     —

Cecile Richards, a women’s rights crusader who served as president of Planned Parenthood as the nation approached a critical inflection point over reproductive freedom, has died, her family said Monday in a statement. She was 67.

“This morning our beloved Cecile passed away at home, surrounded by her family and her ever-loyal dog, Ollie. Our hearts are broken today but no words can do justice to the joy she brought to our lives,” it read.

Richards died just hours before President Donald Trump was sworn in to a second term as president.

Richards’ family was “grateful to the doctors and health care workers who provided her excellent care and the friends, family, and well-wishers who have been by her side during this challenging time,” it said.

While Richards’ family did not disclose her cause of death in the statement, Richards spoke openly with CNN’s Anderson Cooper last June about her battle with glioblastoma– an aggressive type of brain cancer that is incurable and has a survival rate of 12 to 18 months.

“There’s been highs and lows, but I feel really fortunate to have health care that is first class living in New York City,” Richards told CNN’s Anderson Cooper. “It’s made me appreciate how much all people need health care.”

Richards served as president of Planned Parenthood from 2006 to 2018, helping boost the profile of an organization long criticized by conservatives and anti-abortion activists who have called on the government to strip its funding. With nearly 600 health centers, Planned Parenthood bills itself as the nation’s leading provider and advocate of high-quality, affordable sexual and reproductive health care and its largest provider of sex education.

“Together, we have made real progress in this country, expanding access to services and making reproductive rights a central priority of our nation’s health care system,” Richards said in January 2018 when she announced she was stepping down. “I’m deeply proud of the progress we’ve made for the millions of people Planned Parenthood health centers serve across the country each year.”

Planned Parenthood Federation of America and Planned Parenthood Action Fund are “heartbroken to lose a giant in the fight for reproductive freedom,” they said Monday in a statement.

“Cecile Richards was an indomitable force,” the groups said. “In her 12 devoted years of service to our organization, Cecile brought Planned Parenthood Federation of America to new heights in our health care, education, and advocacy work. She led us through fights that transformed the reproductive health and rights landscape and made Planned Parenthood Action Fund the advocacy and political force that it remains to this day.”

The women in Richards’ family were no strangers to political power: Her mother was the late Gov. Ann Richards of Texas and her daughter, Lily Adams, served as a political appointee in former President Joe Biden’s administration.

In one of his final presidential statements, Biden on Monday honored Cecile Richards, calling her a “leader of utmost character” and saying she “fought for the dignity of workers, defended and advanced women’s reproductive rights and equality.”

Then-presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton holds hands with Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, during a June 2016 event in Washington, DC.

“Jill and I are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Cecile Richards. Cecile fearlessly led us forward to be the America we say we are,” said Biden, who in a private ceremony in November awarded Richards the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Richards’ tenure as Planned Parenthood’s president came with major shifts in the landscape of abortion rights in the United States.

Trump in his first term signed a bill in 2017 allowing states to withhold federal money from abortion services providers, including Planned Parenthood. Indeed, the first Trump administration was “the worst for women that I’ve seen in my lifetime,” Richards told CNN’s Van Jones the following year.

Later, the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, ending the constitutional right to an abortion and setting off a fierce fight for reproductive rights at the state level.

After leaving Planned Parenthood, Richards in 2019 partnered with Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza and Ai-jen Poo, director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, to launch a political action group called Supermajority focused on women’s activism and equality.

“I think women are just finally saying, ‘You know, if we’re the majority of the voters, we’re the majority of volunteers, of the activists, and work on every single issue. Why aren’t the things that we care about actually front and center in the political agenda?’” Richards told CNN.

Richards’ “visionary leadership, commitment to justice, and lifelong dedication to advancing the rights of women will forever inspire us,” Supermajority said Monday in a statement.

Richards also was a “fearless champion for abortion access and gender justice to the very end of her extraordinary life,” said National Women’s Law Center President and CEO Fatima Goss Graves.

“Cecile leaves behind a legacy of unshakable determination and a blueprint for how to advocate for the people and causes that need it most,” Graves said in a statement. “She made us better with her rigor, humor, and grace.”

This story has been updated with additional information.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Cecile Richards, the former president of Planned Parenthood. Richards served as the president of the organization from 2006 to 2018, during which time she was a fierce advocate for women’s reproductive rights and access to healthcare.

Under Richards’ leadership, Planned Parenthood expanded its services to millions of women across the country, providing crucial healthcare services, including birth control, cancer screenings, and STI testing. She was a vocal and unapologetic champion for women’s rights, often facing criticism and backlash for her unwavering support of reproductive freedom.

Richards’ legacy will continue to inspire and empower women for generations to come. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and the entire Planned Parenthood community during this difficult time. Rest in power, Cecile Richards.
