Both Wyoming basketball teams will face tough challenges today. The Cowgirls will be home this afternoon against Boise State, while the men’s team will play at San Diego State.
Heading into today’s game, the Cowgirls are tied for third place in the Mountain West with a 6-3 mark (12-9 overall), just one game ahead of the Broncos (5-4, 15-7). UNLV leads the women’s standings (8-1, 16-5). UW enters the game having won two of their last three games, while Boise State has won three of their last four. Both team’s only recent losses were to Colorado State.
Today’s game will be broadcast on WyoRadio’s 1360 KRKK and 1360KRKK.com beginning at 1:30, with the game starting at 2 p.m.
The Wyoming men (4-6 in the MW and 11-10 overall) are looking to build momentum off their dramatic 83-72 overtime win over Fresno State last Tuesday in Laramie. In that contest, Cowboy guard Obi Agbim hit a three-point shot as time expired in regulation to send the game into overtime.
Perennial conference power San Diego State (7-3, 14-5) has won its last three games, two of which came on the road.

Series history: SDSU leads 51-41, winning 11 straight overall and 16 straight at Viejas Arena. The last home loss came in 2007, when Wyoming scored a basket with 4.9 seconds left to win 66-65. They met only once last season, an 81-65 Aztecs win in San Diego.
Aztecs update: They get a much-needed bye after this and an extra week for starting center Jared Coleman-Jones to heal his injured shoulder. Coleman-Jones missed two weeks of preseason practice in October when the shoulder popped out. It happened again at Nevada last Saturday, and the 6-foot-10 senior sat out Tuesday’s nervy 71-68 home win against San Jose State (which dropped the Aztecs five spots in the Kenpom metric to 42nd). Coach Brian Dutcher said he’ll be a game-time decision, although there is some thought to not pushing it with the bye ahead. Sophomore Miles Heide started in his place Tuesday. The Aztecs continue to struggle at Viejas Arena: They have already lost three times this season after going 70-6 over the previous five. In addition, they trailed 20-8 against Air Force and 33-12 against San Jose State before rallying. With another win, Dutcher will become the fourth coach in Mountain West history with 100 conference victories. The others: Steve Fisher (168), Boise State’s Leon Rice (159) and Steve Alford (128) with New Mexico and Nevada. Ted Leitner, in his final season as SDSU’s radio commentator, will be honored in a halftime ceremony that will include more than a dozen former players.
Cowboys update: They have outperformed expectations under first-year coach Sundance Wicks, who grew up in the state and was a former assistant. They have wins against Nevada at home and UNLV away, and the losses include a near miss against New Mexico. The star is Obi Agbim, a 6-3 senior guard who spent one year at a junior college and three in Division II. He averages 18.1 points per game, second in the Mountain West behind New Mexico guard Donovan Dent (19.6), and leads the conference (and is fourth nationally) in 3-point accuracy at 47.0%. The next highest scorers are senior guards Jordan Nesbitt (8.6 ppg) and Cody Newton (8.4 ppg), who both come off the bench. The Cowboys prefer a deliberate tempo, probing multiple sides of the floor deep into the shot clock. They rank 354th nationally in average possession length at 19.8 seconds. In conference games, they’re averaging 63.6 points per game; only 0-10 Air Force scores less at 60.1. The Cowboys can, however, get hot from deep; they made 17 3-pointers in Tuesday’s 83-72 overtime win against Fresno State. That brings shudders to Dutcher, whose team just surrendered 15 3s against San Jose State, the most by an SDSU team in a Mountain West game. Wyoming is 183rd in Kenpom, which projects a 71-55 Aztecs win.

Chicago Cubs Land San Diego Padres Star Pitcher in Proposed Blockbuster Trade
It has been a strong offseason for the Chicago Cubs, who are actively trying to improve their team and become a contender in the National League.
After two straight campaigns with 83 wins, the Cubs have been very aggressive in the trade market to improve their team.
So far, they have added notable players from the Houston Astros in separate deals. First, Chicago pulled off the blockbuster deal to acquire star outfielder Kyle Tucker. Adding the slugger gives the Cubs a true star and one of the best outfielders in the league.
Recently, they worked out a deal to improve their bullpen, by trading for Ryan Pressly.
Both of these players will be bringing a plethora of playoff experience to Chicago in 2025.
Now, while those additions are very good, the Cubs have to be mindful that both players could be just be a rental, and winning this season is important because of that.
While the roster has certainly improved, being able to beat a team like the Los Angeles Dodgers in a playoff series might be challenging.
Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report recently proposed a trade that would send San Diego Padres ace Michael King to the Cubs in exchange for Kevin Alcántara and Javier Assad.
“The prize for San Diego in this deal would be Alcántara. The 22-year-old’s hit tool is suspect, but he checks boxes for power, speed, and defensive ability. He’s also ready to play in the majors.”
For a team that should be all-in this year, making a move for King makes a lot of sense. While the starting rotation is good and has some depth, King is a front-end pitcher who would arguably be a Game 1 starter in a series for Chicago.
Pairing him at the top of the rotation with Shota Imanaga and Justin Steele would give the Cubs a trio that can go toe-to-toe with the likes of the Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies.
Last season, King had his breakout performance after being traded in the package that sent Juan Soto to the New York Yankees. The right-hander totaled a 13-9 record, 2.95 ERA, and 4.2 WAR.
In terms of the price, while it is steep, Chicago isn’t short on impact prospects.
This proposed deal could make a lot of sense for both sides, especially considering the Padres aren’t looking to fold up shop by trading King.
Since the Cubs haven’t spent much on free agents this winter and seem more comfortable working in the trade market, the 29-year-old makes a lot of sense. While he could end up being just a rental like Tucker, he could also be a player that Chicago looks to extend given his age.

UC San Diego has been one of the best stories in college basketball that nobody knows about.
The Tritons are playing like a top-50 team and are not totally dead for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament (just mostly dead, “Princess Bride” style). A win tonight would help UCSD stay in the hunt for a Big West title and make the rematch with UC Irvine a dramatic affair.
Hawaii has had a middling season and will hope to claw its way back to .500 in conference play with an upset on the Island. The Bows just haven’t seemed to find consistency this season, using six different starting lineups and largely struggling on the offensive end.
UCSD has blowout potential every night thanks to its incendiary offense, the No. 1 attack in the Big West. The Tritons don’t turn it over, they score effectively inside, and they don’t miss from the charity stripe.
Having the best player in the league certainly helps — Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones has been an absolute monster this season, averaging 30 points per game over his last three contests. The Kiwi does everything on the floor for the Tritons and is the toughest assignment in the conference.
His running mate, Tyler McGhie, is also a stud and one of the deadliest shooters in the Big West.
UCSD takes good shots on offense, ranking 348th in FGA rate in the mid-range, per CBB Analytics, while hoisting a healthy diet of 3s and also getting efficient looks in the paint.
Hawaii sells out on the arc, taking away the 3 at the fourth-highest rate in the nation (No. 1 in the Big West), so UCSD will need to flex its style a bit to adapt to what the Rainbow Warrior defense is giving it.
That shouldn’t be an issue for the versatile Tait-Jones and savvy McGhie.

Normally, the defensive end has been Hawaii’s strong suit under head coach Eran Ganot, but an inability to put pressure on opponents this season has made its defense less potent than usual.
The Bows force a league-low turnover rate on this end, so while they may limit UCSD’s 3-point attempts, they won’t cause the Tritons to cough up the rock.
On the offensive end, Hawaii’s offense can stagnate. Ranked just ninth in the Big West in adjusted offensive efficiency, the Bows are a poor shooting team that relies heavily on pounding the paint, eating the glass and getting to the free-throw line.
Their style is exactly what UCSD doesn’t allow. Hawaii ranks 16th nationally in FGA rate at the rim and 18th in FGA rate on paint 2s, per CBB Analytics.
UCSD plays a ton of zone, packs the paint and ranks 19th in FGA rate allowed at the rim and 37th in FGA rate allowed on paint 2s. Making Hawaii shoot 3s sure is a good way to beat it.
While the Bows should have the glass edge, one shouldn’t short-sell UCSD’s perimeter defense and its ability to force turnovers. This Tritons team has a ton of perimeter, and that length has led to them ranking second in the Big West in turnover rate. Scoring will come at a premium for Hawaii.
The Bows’ best hope is slowing this game to a crawl. Hawaii plays at a slow tempo and prefers battling in half-court affairs.
UCSD’s zone defense slows opponents down anyway, so the possession count could be extremely low in this game, pointing toward an under bet.
Finally, it’s worth noting Hawaii’s homecourt advantage, or rather surprising lack thereof.
Contrary to popular belief, the Bows rank just 242nd in KenPom’s home-court advantage rankings and are just 2-2 on their floor in league play. Any premium placed on home-court in the line is a mistake.
UCSD should take care of business tonight on the island. While this could be a low-scoring game, the Tritons are far better equipped to put the ball in the basket. A total score below 120 could still result in a double-digit Triton victory.

Waymo is sending autonomous vehicles to 10 new cities in 2025, starting with Las Vegas and San Diego, the company shared exclusively with The Verge.
The vehicles will be manually driven, and the testing operations are not necessarily a precursor to the launch of a commercial robotaxi service. (They’re also not precluded from launching a service, either.) Rather, the Alphabet-owned company views these “road trips” as an opportunity to see how well its self-driving system adapts to new locales with varying weather conditions and regional driving habits.
“So what we’re looking for is places that are going to challenge our system and look very, very different,” said Nick Rose, product manager for Waymo’s expansion efforts. “Las Vegas is pretty interesting because, I mean, if you’ve ever been to Vegas, it’s pretty unique among a lot of US cities.”

Las Vegas is known for its dense traffic and chaotic drop-off zones outside of hotels and popular casinos along the Strip. The streets also have what’s known as Botts’ dots, instead of painted lane lines, and the street layout is often derided as an absolute mess. Several autonomous vehicle operators have already set up shop there, including Amazon’s Zoox, which plans on launching a public rideshare service later this year.
San Diego, in comparison, is similar to the cities where Waymo already operates, Rose said. “What we wanna validate is that the system performs well in San Diego without having a ton of prior driving information there,” he added.
Waymo has said it plans on launching robotaxi operations in Austin, Atlanta, and Miami in the near future. Last year, Waymo sent vehicles to a variety of locations, including Truckee, California, upstate New York, and Michigan, in search of winter weather conditions in which to stress test its robot cars.
This year, the theme is “generalizability”: how well the vehicles adapt to new cities after having driven tens of millions of miles in its core markets of San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles. Ideally, the company is trying to get to a point where it can bring its vehicles to a new city and launch a robotaxi with a minimal amount of testing as a preamble.
“When we go to a brand new city in the US, there are things that are subtly different,” Rose said. “And we want to see how well the driver performs on those things out of the box without having to retrain or make adjustments.”

One example is the way Waymo’s vehicles perceive emergency vehicles. Fire trucks in San Francisco look subtly different from fire trucks in Austin or Los Angeles, Rose said. These trips are an opportunity to update the perception system to account for these subtle differences in emergency vehicles as well as other local quirks. (Waymo vehicles have occasionally blocked intersections or impeded emergency vehicles, but the company recently passed an independent assessment that found it was adept at detecting and responding to emergency situations.)
Waymo plans on sending less than 10 vehicles to each city, where they will be manually driven around for a period of a couple months. The vehicles will stick to busy commercial districts, as these are the areas where Waymo robotaxis are most likely to operate.
Waymo is reaching out in advance to officials in each of the cities in which it plans to test vehicles, Rose said. He wouldn’t disclose the names of the additional cities or how many miles Waymo will try to rack up in each. But he said that it would be enough to make these trips useful.
“The general theme is to collect enough experience to where we can get a pretty statistically significant sense of how well we’re generalizing, especially these perception things,” he said.

Could San Diego become its own state? It’s a longshot
A proposal for California to leave the United States could appear on the ballot in 2028.
SAN DIEGO — “Calexit” is sparking interest again, eight years after it was first introduced. The term refers to California becoming an independent and self-governing nation.
Marcus Ruiz Evans spearheaded the Calexit movement. He filed the initiative the night President Trump was re-elected, saying the rest of the states don’t view California as part of the nation.
“We walk the walk, we love immigrants, we love diversity, we love multiple languages,” Evans said. “We love people who think differently, we love people who’ve been discriminated against, that’s who we are.”
If California separated from the U.S., Evans believes the economy would thrive. He said state taxes could be cut in-half.
Critics point out that California would need to pay for its own military and establish a nationalized government. Evans argues if this was successful, the political future of California would be up to the voters.
“What would probably happen is the governor would become president,” Evans said. “You would probably break California up into some regions.”
That means San Diego could potentially become its own state. Although the same movement fizzled out in 2016, Evans is confident now is the best time.
“This isn’t really about Trump,” he said. “It’s about the fact that you’re in a country that would vote for him three times.”
So, what happens next? Calexit needs to get over 546,000 signatures by late July to get the initiative on the 2028 state ballot. If voters pass the measure, California will not be forced to leave the union. Instead, a commission will look into the possibility of California as its own country.
However, UC San Diego Political Science Professor Thad Kousser said the U.S. Constitution does not allow for a state to secede.
“We fought a war over that. The Civil War,” he said. “It’s very clear this initiative, even if it would pass, would have absolutely no effect. It’s only symbolic and advisory.”
Kousser does think it could spark political momentum.
“This initiative, if it passed, would send a really strong message about California rejecting some of the current direction of the federal government, but wouldn’t actually change any of the reality,” Kousser said.
Evans said California will be able to legally secede from the country, despite the U.S. Constitution. He said it can happen under international legal precedent, which was set by Brexit.
First, there must be a domestic vote, which shows that people want to be independent. That gives the state international recognition, which means they will be able to go to Washington D.C. to ask for permission to leave the nation. Evans said a simple 51% vote in Congress could be all that is needed to leave.

Padres re-sign Elías Díaz as first free agent of offseason – San Diego Union-Tribune
The Padres on Tuesday made their first free-agent addition of the offseason, agreeing to a reunion with Elías Díaz, the Union-Tribune confirmed.
Miami-based El Extrabase reported on social media that the deal was for $3.5 million for one year.
Díaz also received a mutual option for 2026.
An All-Star Game MVP in 2023, Díaz caught on with the Padres in September after the Rockies released him toward the end of an injury-plagued 2024.
Díaz hit .190/.292/.429 with one homer and three RBIs in 12 games down the stretch. He ultimately replaced Luis Campusano as the No. 2 catcher behind Kyle Higashioka and appeared in one postseason game.
Both Higashioka and Díaz filed for free agency, but Higashioka signed a two-year, $13.5 million deal with the Rangers.
The 34-year-old Díaz is returning to compete with the 26-year-old Campusano — who was optioned to Triple-A El Paso late in the year and left off the postseason roster — for the starting job behind the plate.
Martín Maldonado, 38, was also signed to a minor league deal to add to the catching competition this spring.
Díaz represents the Padres’ first free agent signing this offseason.
In contrast, Jurickson Profar (Braves), Tanner Scott (Dodgers), Donovan Solano (Mariners) and Martín Pérez (White Sox) have followed Higashioka out the door to new teams, while Ha-Seong Kim, David Peralta and Nick Ahmed remain free agents.
The Padres’ only other addition to the 40-man roster this offseason is trading for reliever Ron Marinaccio last week as a depth piece.
Díaz is a .251/.304/.388 hitter across 10 big-league seasons. He hit a career-high 18 home runs in 2021 with the Rockies and paired 14 homers and 72 RBIs with a .267/.316/.409 batting line with the Rockies as an All-Star 2023.
Díaz was hitting .270/.315/.378 with six homers and 39 RBIs in 96 games last year when he was released late in the final year of a three-year, $14.5 million contract as the Rockies committed to giving prospect Drew Romo a look behind the plate.

PGA Tour’s Genesis Invitational 2025 moves to Torrey Pines Golf Course – NBC 7 San Diego
The Genesis Invitational golf tournament, which earlier announced it would move away from Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades due to the Los Angeles-area wildfires, will be held next month on the South Course of Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, officials announced Friday.
The tournament, annually hosted by Tiger Woods, will be played on its regularly scheduled dates of Feb. 10-16. PGA officials said the tournament will return to Riviera Country Club next year.
“The 2025 playing of The Genesis Invitational will include a number of Los Angeles-related relief initiatives with those details to be forthcoming,” tournament officials said in a statement. “Torrey Pines Golf Course also is the host facility for the Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open being played this week.
