Racerhead #3: San Diego Supercross Preview
On Saturday morning I stopped by the Red Bull KTM tent to chat with Roger De Coster, and he said there have been some internal changes with the team. Roger made it sound like the U.S. group will now have more say in supercross suspension setup, and a key WP (suspension) staffer in Austria who was overseeing the program has now been moved to other areas. Chase seems darned happy with his bike these days, which is a massive difference from this time last year, when he podiumed Anaheim 1 but said he didn’t even think he was going to finish in the top ten! It’s not all roses, though. Chase said the biggest breakthrough really only took place on Monday before the race, and he finally got the feel he wanted. He also says he still wasn’t fully satisfied, and there is more work to do.
If you’re looking for excitement this year, seeing Sexton, Ken Roczen, Jason Anderson, Cooper Webb, and Eli Tomac in good form at Anaheim while 2024 Supercross Champion Jett Lawrence struggled definitely makes for a fun story-line. We expected a slow start for the Honda 450 program this year, we spoke about this in our Monster Energy Racer X Supercross Preview Shows a month ago. The new 2025 Honda has not transitioned to supercross as easily as it did in motocross or SMX, plus, since then, the team has taken on new Showa suspension components, a new ECU supplier (GET), and new race fuel (ETS). I love the sliding scale of being ready for round one. Every year, someone gets it right and someone needs more time. Last year it was Sexton and KTM struggling, this year it’s Honda and the Lawrences (Hunter was 11th). Variables in racing are more fun. Will Honda figure it out? Absolutely. But it will be fun to watch the defending champ have to dig out of a hole.
This weekend, Ty Masterpool is subbing in for Levi Kitchen. I know Masterpool fans are mad that starting Ty at round two will hurt his title chances, but I don’t think anyone, including Ty, considered this a potential title year in supercross. Do you know Ty doesn’t even have a top-10 finish in his career in supercross? He has failed to even make the main several times in his 250SX career. This is a learning year. From what I heard, Ty’s agent Lucas Mirtl actually asked Mitch Payton if Ty could fill-in as soon as Kitchen went out on Saturday. I think this move works well in a few ways. First, there’s less pressure. Second, I don’t think this West field will be as deep as the now-loaded East, which recently added RJ Hampshire, Austin Forkner (again, now with Triumph), and Kitchen to its ranks. Third, West gives Ty a mid-season break to focus on motocross testing. On the drawback side, Ty could possibly have benefited from a three more weeks of prep if he had stayed in the East, but I think the stiffer competition there negates that. Let’s just see Ty get through supercross healthy and learn for the future, and see what he can do fully prepared for the summer. Title contender?
Racerhead #3: San Diego Supercross PreviewAs the Monster Energy Supercross season continues to heat up, all eyes are turning to the upcoming race in San Diego. With the points battles getting tighter and the competition fiercer than ever, this weekend’s race is sure to be one for the books.
The San Diego track is known for its technical sections and challenging obstacles, making it a favorite among riders and fans alike. From the massive jumps to the tight corners, this track will test the skills and endurance of the top riders in the sport.
In the 450 class, defending champion Eli Tomac will be looking to extend his lead in the championship standings, but he’ll have stiff competition from the likes of Ken Roczen, Cooper Webb, and Justin Barcia. With each rider hungry for a win, fans can expect some intense battles on the track.
In the 250 class, the young guns will be looking to make a statement and show that they have what it takes to compete with the best. With riders like Austin Forkner, Justin Cooper, and Jett Lawrence all vying for the top spot, the racing is sure to be fast and furious.
So grab your popcorn, strap in, and get ready for an action-packed night of racing at the San Diego Supercross. It’s sure to be a wild ride.

UCSD’s enrollment soars by 1,880, dominating growth in the UC system – San Diego Union-Tribune
UC San Diego’s enrollment soared by 1,880 students in the fall, more than twice the growth at any other University of California campus and a sign that the school could reach 50,000 as early as 2030 and 56,000 by 2040.
New data from the UC Office of the President also show that women outnumber men among UCSD students for the first time since 2006 and that the share of international students continues to fall while the share of California residents rises.
The figures stem from an unprecedented expansion that began in 2013, a year after Pradeep Khosla became chancellor, and that has seen the campus become packed with ever more students and high-rise buildings.
The UC Board of Regents has sent a disproportionate number of students to UCSD because it has the space to grow, helping the system deal with huge systemwide enrollment demand. Some UC schools, notably Santa Cruz, have resisted growth.
The growth at UCSD raised its fall enrollment to a record 44,256 — a level the school wasn’t projected to hit until 2035.
If the campus adds only 1,000 students for each of the next six years, it will reach 50,000 in 2030, making it among the largest universities in the western U.S.
The school is anticipating such growth. Last year, Khosla got permission from Regents to build a campus village that would house as many as 6,000 students. UCSD already houses 22,500.
With the new data, UCLA reported the second-highest growth in the fall, adding 657 students and pushing enrollment to a record 47,335.
UC Berkeley, the system’s third-largest school, added 185 students, nudging enrollment to 45,883 — also a record.
Berkeley’s growth has stalled in recent years, largely because it is close to its physical capacity. If present trends continue, UCSD could take its place as the second-biggest UC campus in the next two years.
There’s also been a shift in the percentage of international students at UCSD.
In 2017, these students represented 21.6% of the school’s enrollment. Last fall, they made up only 16.2%.
Much of the change was brought about the California Legislature, which told UCSD, UCLA and UC Berkeley in 2021 to reduce international enrollment to make more room for students who are California residents.
The percentage also was driven down by the COVID-19 pandemic, which reduced foreign enrollment across the U.S. Educators also say that political tensions with China also led to a drop in Chinese students.
UCSD says 72.4% of its students were California residents last fall, which is 2.6 percentage points higher than it was in 2021.
The fall figures further show that 50.3% of students were women and 45.5% were men. The other 4.2% either did not report their gender or listed it differently.
The shift isn’t surprising; women have long made up a greater share of college students nationwide. Educators note that women graduate from high school at a higher rate than men, and women on average apply to more colleges then men.

San Diego has overcome an early deficit to take the lead back in this one. After one quarter, neither squad has the contest in the bag, but San Diego leads 27-25 over Wash. State.
San Diego entered the match with four straight losses and they’re well on their way to making it five. Can they turn things around, or will Wash. State hand them another defeat? Only time will tell.

Wash. State is headed into Thursday’s match hungry for a win as their strong season has now been derailed by two straight defeats. They fell 88-75 to Gonzaga on Saturday.
Nate Calmese put forth a good effort for the losing side as he went 9 for 14 en route to 20 points plus eight assists and four steals. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in field goal percentage (64.3%). Another player making a difference was LeJuan Watts, who posted 17 points plus six assists and five rebounds.
Meanwhile, San Diego’s recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Saturday after their fourth straight loss. They were completely outmatched by Saint Mary’s at home and fell 103-56. The Toreros were surely aware of their disadvantage in the point spread, but the foreknowledge did nothing to prevent the result.
Wash. State’s defeat dropped their record down to 13-5. As for San Diego, their loss dropped their record down to 4-14.
Keep an eye on the arc in Thursday’s game: Wash. State has been dynamite from deep this season, having nailed 36.7% of their threes per game. It’s a different story for San Diego, though, as they’ve only made 27.5% of their threes this season. Given Wash. State’s sizable advantage in that area, San Diego will need to find a way to close that gap.

Fog was creating a travel nightmare Friday at the San Diego International Airport as travelers wrapped up the New Year’s Eve holiday.
The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop Thursday night for SAN, which created a domino effect of delays and cancellations that continued to affect travelers on Friday morning as fog continued to blanket the San Diego’s coastline.
“Flights are currently delayed by 90 minutes, SAN spokesperson Nicole Hall said. “Flights are currently arriving and departing but with impact of last night’s ground delay and this morning’s we anticipate delays throughout the rest of today as we get caught up.”
Hall advised travelers to check their flight status before heading to the airport.

Dense fog over Del Cerro in San Diego on Jan. 3, 2025. Thursday’s ground stop came amid a dense fog advisory for San Diego County’s coastal areas, which was in effect until 10 a.m. Friday. Some areas had visibility reduced to a quarter-mile, according to NBC 7 Meteorologist Brooke Martell.
SAN’s website was flooded with red as flights were delayed Friday. FlightAware, an unofficial flight tracking website, was showing nearly 300 delays and 40 cancellations by 11 a.m.
While fog is expected to clear in the afternoon, it’s possible foggy conditions will return to the coastline Friday evening, Martell said.
The airport’s holiday travel period continues until Sunday, which means they estimate about 80,000 people leaving and landing at SAN daily between now and then.
A Canadian family were some of the hundreds affected by delays. The Gendreau family was set to fly out at 7:15 a.m. but will be stranded at the airport until at least 1 p.m.
“We found out this morning when we arrived because all my reservations were done on my phone and it was turned off because I’m Canadian in the U.S. so I didn’t get any notification before we went here,” Alain Gendreau said “We don’t have any choice. So choose your battle. There’s nothing we can do.”

The Los Angeles Dodgers made the signing of Hyeseong Kim to a three-year contract official on Friday, and in order to make room on their 40-man roster, designated Diego Cartaya for assignment.
It’s an unceremonious development for Cartaya, who once was a former top Dodgers prospect in the organization. Among other challenges, he’s battled a back injury and a learning curve behind the plate over recent years.
Cartaya hit just .189/.278/.379 with 10 doubles, 19 home runs and 57 RBI over 93 games for Double-A Tulsa in 2023. He continued to show elite power, but struck out at a 29% rate.
Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman and Brandon Gomes both voiced confidence in Cartaya being able to bounce back in 2024.
“He’s a really naturally talented player who’s coming off a down year,” Friedman said. “I’ve seen that a lot in the past with really good players, the ones who have really good makeup, bounce back from that. And so it wouldn’t surprise me at all Diego comes out this year and has a really good year.”
However, he continued to largely underwhelm with the Drillers despite some improvements.
Cartaya nevertheless earned a promotion to Triple-A Oklahoma City in June, and the organization planned to have him catch upwards of three games per week despite also having Hunter Feduccia on the roster.
Cartaya batted .208/.293/.350 with eight doubles, six home runs and 25 RBI in 49 games.
In 2022, Cartaya was named the Branch Rickey Minor League Player of the Year by the Dodgers, he was ranked by MLB Pipeline among their top 100 prospects.
What’s next for Diego Cartaya?
The Dodgers now have seven days to potentially trade Cartaya if he were to get claimed off waivers. Should the 23-year-old clear, the Dodgers would have the option to send Cartaya outright to the Minors while still keeping him off their 40-man roster for the time being.
Dalton Rushing’s development seemingly made Cartaya somewhat expendable.

The Los Angeles Dodgers shocked fans and analysts alike by announcing a surprising decision regarding former top prospect Diego Cartaya. Despite high expectations for the young catcher, the team has decided to move him to a new position in the infield. This unexpected move comes after Cartaya struggled to find consistent success behind the plate, leading the organization to explore other options for his development. With his strong arm and quick reflexes, the Dodgers believe that Cartaya has the potential to excel as an infielder, specifically at second base.
While some may question the decision to shift Cartaya’s position, the Dodgers are confident that this move will ultimately benefit both the player and the team. By adapting to a new position, Cartaya will have the opportunity to showcase his versatility and potentially make a greater impact on the field.
Only time will tell if this surprising decision pays off for the Dodgers, but one thing is for certain – Diego Cartaya’s journey in the MLB is far from over. Stay tuned to see how this talented prospect adapts to his new role and continues to grow as a player.

Dodgers Shockingly DFA Former Top Prospect Diego Cartaya
The Dodgers have made the decision to designate former top prospect Diego Cartaya for assignment. The move comes after the team signed Hyeseong Kim to a deal.
The Dodgers needed to clear room on the 40-man roster for Kim, who was officially signed to a three-year, $12.5 million deal with a two-year club option for 2028 and 2029. Designating Cartaya for assignment comes as a surprise, though.
Cartaya, 23, was once considered the top prospect in the Dodgers organization.
This article will be updated…
The Los Angeles Dodgers made a shocking move today, designating former top prospect Diego Cartaya for assignment.Cartaya, once considered one of the top catching prospects in all of baseball, has struggled to live up to the high expectations placed upon him since signing with the Dodgers as an international free agent in 2018.
Despite showing flashes of potential in the minor leagues, Cartaya has been unable to put it all together at the major league level. His struggles at the plate and behind the dish have led to the Dodgers making the difficult decision to DFA him.
It’s a tough break for Cartaya, who was once seen as a cornerstone of the Dodgers’ future. However, baseball can be a cruel game, and sometimes talented prospects just don’t pan out.
It will be interesting to see if another team takes a chance on Cartaya and tries to unlock the potential that made him such a highly regarded prospect in the first place. Only time will tell what the future holds for Diego Cartaya.

Chris Johnson knew Boise State coach Spencer Danielson would help keep the Broncos’ College Football Playoff hopes alive, even as they faced a late-season crossroads.
Johnson, Danielson’s football coach at Horizon Christian Academy in Clairemont, saw a familiar positive energy in Danielson even as Boise State trailed Mountain West counterpart San Jose State by two touchdowns in their Nov. 16 game.
“When they were down early and everyone was fired up, (Danielson) came up the field clapping. He was inspired,” Johnson said. “And I had no doubt that they were going to come back and win that game.”
Boise State dominated the second half en route to a 42-21 victory. Running back Ashton Jeanty scored his second and third rushing touchdowns of the night, adding to a résumé that made him the Heisman Trophy runner-up.
The Broncos’ comeback extended a winning streak that now sits at 11 games ahead of Tuesday’s Fiesta Bowl matchup with Penn State.
The Phoenix-area bowl game is one of four College Football Playoff quarterfinals. It’s the closest the long-successful but often overlooked Boise State program has come to college football’s national championship.
The Broncos’ historic campaign under Danielson, a 36-year-old in his first full season as head coach, is rooted in San Diego.
“I was homeschooled up until high school,” said Danielson, a Solana Beach native. “At Horizon, my first time going to school, I was just impacted by the teachers there, with No. 1 being Chris Johnson. … If it wasn’t for him and my time at Horizon, I don’t know if I’d be coaching now.”
The qualities that have made Danielson a winning coach were evident decades ago. Danielson took over at quarterback for the Panthers despite having never played the position. (He was mostly a defensive back and wide receiver.)
At first, he couldn’t throw the ball more than 15 or 20 yards.
“He worked with the coaches every day on exploring motion and how to recover — everything that goes into being a starting quarterback,” Johnson said. “And you could see his leadership come out during that time.”
Danielson continued to blossom after high school. He played first at the University of San Diego and later at Azusa Pacific. Danielson flourished at linebacker under APU coach Victor Santa Cruz, himself a former San Diego-area high school star.
“When you spend time with him, within the first 15 minutes you realize this is a focused, all-in individual,” said Santa Cruz, a Rancho Buena Vista High School grad who is now the coach at JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano. “It’s his deep convictions, his deep passion and his authenticity that says, ‘Man, he loves the game, but he loves his teammates and wants to go all-out for them.’ That’s what makes him such a great coach.”
APU defensive lineman Manako Tuifua (45) along with Spencer Danielson (7) and strong safety Nick Grunsky (36) tackles Western Oregon running back Kenneth Haynes (22) in the first half of a NCAA Division II football game at Citrus College on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012 in Glendora, Calif.(Keith Birmingham/ San Gabriel Tribune) Santa Cruz offered Danielson his first coaching position as a graduate assistant at APU. That role eventually led to Danielson overseeing the Cougars’ linebackers.
“That’s where I went from being intrigued about coaching to saying, ‘I want to coach, and I want to have an impact,’” Danielson said of his time at APU. “Not because I love football so much, but because I truly want to impact these young men’s lives on and off the football field.”
Danielson left Azusa Pacific for Boise State in 2017. In seven seasons, he climbed from graduate assistant (2017) to defensive ends coach (2018) to defensive line coach and co-defensive coordinator (2019-20) to defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach (2021-23). Boise State fired coach Andy Avalos with the Broncos sitting at 5-5 last November, and gave Danielson the job on an interim basis.
Danielson’s Broncos won their first three games, beating UNLV in the Mountain West title game, before falling to UCLA in the L.A. Bowl. Between the conference championship game and bowl game, Danielson was awarded the full-time job and given a five-year, $6.5 million contract.
Danielson’s guiding principles come from his religious faith, which he said grew as he played for Johnson and Santa Cruz.
Danielson describes his core beliefs as: “No. 1, love Jesus. No. 2, work hard. No. 3, treat people right.”
“I’m not saying I do those things all the time,” he said, “but that’s the foundation of my life.”

High Tech High took over the space near Balboa Avenue three years after purchasing the campus from Horizon.
The physical church and school may be gone, but the platform Danielson has — and uses — keeps Horizon’s impact alive.
Just ask his former coach.
“They can take down the walls, but they can’t take the spirit of Horizon away,” Johnson said. “That is always going to connect us together. … The vision of Horizon was very simple: Train them up and then send them out into the world to do the same thing.
“It’s a blessing to see it happen, but it was expected.”
