Inter Miami signs Diego Gomez’s replacement: A new lethal trio with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez?
As the January transfer window approaches, MLS teams are gearing up for the 2025 season. Inter Miami, already active in the transfer market, has now secured a replacement for Diego Gomez. The signing looks to solidify their attack, potentially forming a lethal trio alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.
Paraguayan midfielder Diego Gomez quickly became one of Inter Miami’s standout players after joining, excelling both centrally and on the left wing. His impressive performances caught the attention of Brighton & Hove Albion, who signed him for a reported $15 million—a significant sale for MLS. Inter Miami wasted no time in finding his successor.
According to MLS and USMNT insider Tom Bogert, Inter Miami has signed winger Fafa Picault. The Haitian player last played at Vancouver Whitecaps, but left as a free agent at the end of the 2024 season.
Picault was one of the most coveted players in the free agency, and several clubs set their eyes on the forward. He even had advanced talks with another MLS side, Austin FC. However, as Bogert reports, family reasons turned to be the driving factor that weigh in for Picault to join Inter Miami.
Picault brings a wealth of experience to an Inter Miami squad seeking the right balance of youth and veteran leadership. Since debuting in the MLS in 2017, he has played for clubs including Philadelphia Union, FC Dallas, Houston Dynamo, Nashville SC, and Vancouver Whitecaps. Last season, he tallied 9 goals and 5 assists in 1,675 minutes, showcasing his enduring effectiveness on the field.
A new Inter Miami trio: Messi, Suarez, and Picault
With Lionel Messi orchestrating play from the right and Luis Suarez commanding the central striker position, Gomez provided balance and creativity from the left wing during his time with the team. Picault now steps into that role, offering a different skill set.
While Picault may lack Gomez’s playmaking flair, he brings much-needed speed to the left flank. As Jordi Alba‘s pace has slowed with age, and Julian Gressel isn’t as dynamic in wide positions, Picault’s ability to make long runs and score goals fills a key gap for Inter Miami.
Even at 33, Picault demonstrated in 2024 that he remains a potent attacking option. His pace and positioning could complement Messi’s playmaking instincts, as the Argentine has often excelled with quick wingers capable of exploiting space—similar to partnerships Messi fostered at Barcelona and PSG. If Picault can replicate his form from last season, Inter Miami’s attacking trio might become one of the most feared in the league.

Messi, widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, brings his unmatched skill and goal-scoring ability to the team. His partnership with former Barcelona teammate Suarez is sure to strike fear into the hearts of opposing defenses.
With these two world-class players leading the attack, Inter Miami is poised to make a serious impact in the upcoming season. The prospect of seeing Messi and Suarez team up once again has fans eagerly anticipating what this dynamic duo can achieve together.

How to watch Utah State basketball vs. San Diego State: TV channel, time
When Utah State point guard Drake Allen left his team’s game against UC San Diego a week and a half ago, the Aggies were worried.
There were fears that Allen could miss four to six weeks because of his injured shoulder.
But the Aggies may be opening a late Christmas present this weekend.
Allen was back practicing with the team this week and will be a game-time decision when Utah State visits No. 20 San Diego State on Saturday, head coach Jerrod Calhoun said.
“He’s made a great comeback, a really good seven-to-10 days,” the coach said.
The Aggies could certainly use the senior’s floor leadership in Viejas Arena against the 8-2 Aztecs.
“It’s a credit to him. He’s worked. He’s been in his building for 24 hours,” Calhoun said. “I also heard complaints from his wife on Christmas that he didn’t come out of his room, that he was doing exercises to get himself ready.
“That’s what type of kid Drake is and hopefully he’ll be ready to go.”
Like Allen, the Aggies seem to have shaken off the ill effects of their meeting with UC San Diego. USU followed that upset defeat with a big road win against Saint Mary’s last weekend.
USU sits at 11-1 heading into the start of Mountain West Conference play.
“Shoulda, coulda, woulda on one game. But at the end of the day, you can’t get it back,” Calhoun said. “Our guys didn’t sulk and pout. They went on the road and beat a really good St. Mary’s team.”
Add to that wins over St. Bonaventure and Iowa in nonconference play and Utah State currently ranks 29th in the NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET) rankings.
“I’m excited where we’re at,” Calhoun said. “I told the guys I’d give them an A [for their preseason]. … With a whole new group, to me, that’s an A performance.”
But San Diego State should provide the Aggies with their toughest test yet. Senior guard Nick Boyd, who helped lead Florida Atlantic to a Final Four appearance last season, now leads San Diego State in scoring with 13.4 points per game average.
“It’ll be a good test for us,” Calhoun said. “We just went on the road and did it and now we have to do it in the conference. We have to be ready.”

What to Know
We’ve got another exciting Mountain West matchup on schedule as the Utah State Aggies and the San Diego State Aztecs are set to tip at 6:00 p.m. ET on Saturday at Viejas Arena. The Aztecs are favored, but seeing as the odds didn’t stop the Aggies in their last game, maybe the team has another upset up their sleeve.
Utah State can’t be too worried about heading out to take on San Diego State: they just beat Saint Mary’s at home, who had been dominant on their own court up to that point. Utah State walked away with a 75-68 win over Saint Mary’s on Sunday. While the oddsmakers failed to call the winner, they nailed the 143 point over/under.
Mason Falslev and Karson Templin were among the main playmakers for Utah State as the former went 8 for 11 en route to 18 points plus five rebounds and the latter went 5 for 9 en route to 13 points. What’s more, Falslev also posted a 72.7% field goal percentage, which is the highest he’s posted since back in March.
Even though they won, Utah State struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only four offensive rebounds. That’s the fewest offensive rebounds they’ve posted since back in February.
Meanwhile, San Diego State waltzed into their game on Saturday with four straight wins… but they left with five. They were the clear victor by a 71-50 margin over the Golden Bears. The Aztecs have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won three contests by 21 points or more this season.
San Diego State’s victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Nick Boyd, who had 17 points plus four steals. Another player making a difference was Miles Byrd, who had 12 points along with five rebounds and two blocks.
Utah State’s win bumped their record up to 11-1. As for San Diego State, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they’ve won six of their last seven matches, which provided a nice bump to their 8-2 record this season.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Utah State has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 38.9 rebounds per game. However, it’s not like San Diego State struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 38.2. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we’ll see if one team can grab an edge.
San Diego State and Utah State pleased both fans and bettors in their last matchups by winning and covering the spread. As for their next game, San Diego State is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 3.5 points. Against the spread, they have been a house darling this year with a chancy 3-6 ATS record.
Odds
San Diego State is a 3.5-point favorite against Utah State, according to the latest college basketball odds.
The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Aztecs as a 4.5-point favorite.
The over/under is 144.5 points.

No. 20 San Diego State resumes conference play Saturday at Viejas Arena – San Diego Union-Tribune
No. 20 San Diego State vs. Utah State
When: 3 p.m. Saturday
Where: Viejas Arena
On the air: Fox; 760-AM
Records: SDSU is 8-2 (1-0); Utah State is 11-1 (1-0)
Series history: SDSU leads 20-10 and is 10-1 at Viejas Arena. The last four home meetings have been by an average of 17.5 points, including 86-67 last season.
Aztecs update: This is the first of three Saturday games on network TV, followed by Jan. 4 at Boise State and Jan. 11 at New Mexico, both on CBS. The Aztecs went from playing six games in 16 days to just one in the next 16, the 71-50 win against Cal last Saturday in San Jose. After this, they get a midweek bye, then go the remainder of the season with two games in every week except one. The Aztecs climbed three spots in the latest AP poll to No. 20, yet 15 of the 60-odd ballots still don’t list them. Two voters have them at No. 13 and five in the top 15. The two keys against Utah State are solving its matchup zone, something the Aztecs didn’t do well against UCSD in the opener; and rebounding, which they haven’t done well most of the season but did well against Cal. Still, the numbers are concerning. SDSU ranks 295th nationally in keeping opponents off the offensive boards, and Utah State ranks ninth in the rate they rebound their missed shots (39.5%). “I’m proud of how we did in the nonconference, especially without having Reese Waters,” Miles Byrd said. “If you would have told us that at the beginning of the season, you would have sounded crazy to say we’d be the 20th team in the country without one of our best scorers.”
Aggies update: The game matches teams picked fourth (SDSU) and sixth (Utah State) in the Mountain West preseason poll but have separated themselves as the conference’s best through November and December. SDSU has the conference’s top Kenpom ranking (36); Utah State is the best in the NET (29). Unlike the previous season, when new coach Danny Sprinkle had to build a roster with zero returning points, new coach Jerrod Calhoun from Youngstown State had two major pieces back from the regular season champs in guards Mason Falslev (17.3 points, 6.5 rebounds) and Ian Martinez (17.0 points) – one of just two Division I duos averaging at least 17 points and 3.0 assists per game. “They know how to play, and they know how to win,” SDSU coach Brian Dutcher said. “You don’t win a regular-season title without knowing how to win.” Isaac Johnson, a 7-0 center who started his career at Oregon, returns as well but 6-8, 230-pound Karson Templin (10.3 points) has been getting most of the minutes inside. The 10-0 start, which includes a neutral-court win against Iowa, was the best in program history before UCSD handed the Aggies the only loss, 75-73 in Logan on Dec. 17. They rebounded from that with a 75-68 win at St. Mary’s last Sunday.
Next up: Jan. 4 at Boise State (1 p.m. PST, CBS)

Pete Kaligis says first WSU practice in San Diego like a Christmas present
SAN DIEGO — On the day before Christmas, Washington State interim head coach Pete Kaligis led the Cougs through their first bowl practice on site in San Diego and says it felt like unwrapping an early present under the tree.
“It was really good, I think I had an early Christmas present,” WSU’s acting head coach said after Tuesday’s practice. “We had a little move-the-ball series in there and watched them compete, the offense moved it down to the low red and the defense put up a stop and held them to three. Just the competitiveness on both sides of the ball was exciting to watch.”
The secondary was a bright spot, with the corners getting their hands on the football. Kaligis said his biggest takeaway was the communication on the back end, something that ran hot and cold for the Cougars throughout the regular season.
“What I saw today with the defense was communication and pre-snap communication,” Kaligis said. “Everyone was talking, everyone knew what they were doing … once you know that, then you can play fast and play hard.”
The Cougars are still set to take on No. 21 Syracuse on Friday in the Holiday Bowl at 5 p.m. on Fox.
Related: Expect many familiar WSU faces in Holiday Bowl, says Pete Kaligis
THE LAST THREE WEEKS at Washington State have been among the more tumultuous times in program history. Former head man Jake Dickert left for Wake Forest, 29 Cougs in total have entered the portal at last count, and reports of palace intrigue continue to surface. So a trek from the cold of Pullman to the sunshine of San Diego has been a timely respite.
“I knew coming down here would energize us, getting out of Pullman would be good for us,” Kaligis said. “Just a new environment for these young men to be around. You get to a new environment, it just juices you up.”
ONCE THE BOWL GAME CONCLUDES on Friday night, the future is unclear. Some players will stay at WSU with the as-yet to be named new coaching staff, while others will disperse to new homes, and many of the graduating seniors will enter life after college football.
“To be together as a family we’re really looking forward to that,” Kaligis said. “We’re just so grateful for everyone because they’re also sacrificing their time to make sure we have a great time. I want to thank everyone involved in this for making this a special time for these young men.”
NOTABLE: While media were able to observe the bowl practice on Tuesday, they were barred from reporting anything roster-related (i.e. who was present or not present), or any of the granular practice details. From a coaching perspective, WSU doesn’t want to give away something that could help the opponent. Syracuse is favored by 17.
WSU-SYRACUSE GAME DETAILS:
- WHERE: Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego
- KICKOFF: Friday 5 p.m.
- TV: FOX (Gus Johnson, Joel Klatt, and Jenny Taft)
- RADIO: Washington State IMG Radio Network
- WEATHER FORECAST: 61 degrees at kickoff, light winds, partly cloudy
- RECORDS: WSU is 8-4, Syracuse is 9-3
- THE SERIES: Syracuse leads 1-0
- LAST TIME: Syracuse beat WSU 52-25 in Syracuse in 1979
- ESPN matchup predictor: 49.8 percent chance Cougs win (that is not a typo)
- RANKINGS: Syracuse is No. 21 in CFP, No. 22 AP, No. 25 Coaches. WSU is unranked.
- THE LINE: Syracuse by 17
- CF.C PREDICTION: Syracuse 42-21
Related: Unwrapping the jumbled two-deeps vs. No. 21 Syracuse in the Holiday Bowl
Today, Pete Kaligis, the defensive line coach for Washington State University, shared his excitement about the team’s first practice in San Diego. In a recent interview, Kaligis described the experience as being like a Christmas present for the team.Kaligis expressed how grateful the team was to be able to practice in San Diego, citing the beautiful weather and top-notch facilities as a welcome change from their usual routine. He emphasized the importance of taking advantage of this opportunity to fine-tune their skills and build team chemistry.
Overall, Kaligis is optimistic about the team’s time in San Diego and believes it will set the tone for a successful season ahead. Fans are eagerly awaiting to see the Cougars in action and are hopeful for a strong showing in the upcoming games. Stay tuned for more updates on WSU’s journey in San Diego!

The matchup between No. 21 Syracuse and Washington State presented DirecTV Holiday Bowl officials with an opportunity to showcase two of the nation’s top quarterbacks.
Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord leads the nation in passing yardage with 4,326 yards. Washington State quarterback John Mateer leads the nation in combined touchdowns with 44. That includes four TDs (two passing, two rushing) this season in a 29-26 win over San Diego State.
Then Mateer entered the NCAA transfer portal (he left for Oklahoma) and there went that.
Enter Washington State backup quarterback Zevi Eckhaus, who steps into the starter’s role.
Eckhaus’ 85.7% completion percentage is among the best in the nation. Of course, he has attempted only seven passes (six completions). The stats all were compiled during the season opener against Portland State, with Eckhaus throwing for 61 yards and a touchdown.
No matter.
The Holiday Bowl’s new sales pitch — remember what USC backup quarterback Miller Moss did last year?
When USC starter Caleb Williams opted out of the 2023 Holiday Bowl, Moss was given his first start. He responded with a Holiday Bowl-record six touchdown passes in USC’s 42-28 win over Louisville.
“He stepped in and had a great outing,” Eckhaus said moments after Washington State’s arrival in San Diego on Monday afternoon. “It’s really cool to see.
“I think the biggest thing for me is just helping my team win. Obviously, that’s an awesome feat to have, something that he can carry with him forever. If I can recreate that, awesome. If I can do better, awesome. The biggest thing for me is just winning this game.”
Culver City quarterback Zevi Eckhaus (4) passes the ball during first-half game action against Palos Verdes in a Bay League showdown at Culver City High School on Friday, April 9, 2021.(Photo by Axel Koester, Contributing Photographer) While he appeared briefly this season, the 6-foot, 200-pound Eckhaus hasn’t been overwhelmed by the moment. His moment. In fact, throwing six touchdown passes in a game isn’t difficult for him to imagine. Eckhaus did exactly that in his last start.
That was at Bryant University, where Eckhaus closed out the 2023 season with a 394-yard, six-touchdown performance in a win over Southeast Missouri State.
While it was the FCS level, Eckhaus put up some impressive numbers nonetheless. In three seasons, he passed for nearly 8,500 yards and 75 touchdowns. He also ran for 760 yards and five TDs.
Eckhaus transferred to Washington State before the season, settling in as the backup QB. Washington State put together a solid NIL package in recent weeks in an attempt to keep Mateer, but it didn’t matter when Oklahoma came calling.
So Eckhaus gets his 60 minutes of fame over four quarters of football.
“I’m excited for the opportunity,” said Eckhaus, a senior from Culver City.
He tried to make practice reps as game-like as possible while Washington State (8-4) prepared for Syracuse (9-3).
“Obviously, there’s nothing that quite compares to that game-like environment,” Eckhaus said, “but I feel like I’ve prepared enough for when that times comes this Friday. …
“I hope there’s some nerves there. It’s been over a year since I’ve started a game. I feel like nerves are a good thing. If you can channel your nerves properly, they can be very beneficial.”
USC quarterback Miller Moss celebrates during their 42-28 victory over Louisville in the Holiday Bowl on Wednesday night at Petco Park in San Diego. (K.C. Alfred/The San Diego Union-Tribune) Washington State acting head coach Pete Kaligis is confident in Eckhaus, citing the quarterback’s leadership and passion.
“He’s all heart,” said Kaligis, who also stepped into a starring role recently after Cougars coach Jake Dickert left for Wake Forest. “He’s selfless. He’s the type of young man that no matter what the opportunity is, he’s going to take advantage of it. I trust him fully.”

Holiday Bowl financial boom about to kick off for San Diego – NBC 7 San Diego
The Holiday Bowl is iconic to San Diego, not just for the football game but what it does for the San Diego economy.
Washington State and Syracuse will play in the Holiday Bowl Friday at Snapdragon Stadium, the first time the Mission Valley site has hosted the game.
Since 1978, in its 45 years of existence, the Holiday Bowl has generated more than $1 billion of economic impact in San Diego.
“That’s why we do this,” Mark Neville, Holiday Bowl CEO told NBC 7 Thursday morning. “This is to drive economic benefits for San Diego.”
On average, the Holiday Bowl annually pumps between $15-20 million into the local economy, with visitors all over San Diego during what is traditionally one of the slowest times of the year for tourism.
“When people come to San Diego for the game, of course, they’re coming for the football game, but once they’re here, there’s not a better bowl destination in the country, period,” Neville said. “There’s nowhere else in the country where you can do as many things and see as many beautiful sights,” adding, “and there will be millions of eyeballs watching this game and seeing San Diego.”
As for the game, the scars are still healing from 2021 when UCLA, citing COVID issues, bailed hours before kickoff, causing the Holiday Bowl to be canceled. This year there was talk of Washington State not playing in the game due to their head coach leaving for a new job, many assistant coaches leaving the team and more than 25 players entering the transfer portal, but last week the Cougars reaffirmed their commitment to the Holiday Bowl and their head coach left no doubt at Thursday’s Holiday Bowl press conference.
“You make changes’ and you put young men in there that got heart and are going to fight,” said Pete Kaligis, interim Washington State head coach.”That’s going to be the whole message tonight and tomorrow….It’s your time to shine. It really is.”
The Holiday Bowl financial boom is about to kick off for San Diego, bringing in millions of dollars in revenue for local businesses and boosting the city’s economy. As one of the most anticipated college football games of the season, the Holiday Bowl draws in thousands of visitors from out of town who spend money on hotels, restaurants, and shopping during their stay.According to NBC 7 San Diego, the influx of tourists for the Holiday Bowl is expected to provide a much-needed boost for San Diego’s hospitality industry, which has been hit hard by the pandemic. Hotels are already seeing a surge in bookings for the game, and restaurants are preparing for a busy week ahead.
In addition to the economic impact, the Holiday Bowl also brings national attention to San Diego, showcasing the city as a top destination for sports fans and travelers. With exciting matchups, fan events, and a festive atmosphere, the game is sure to attract attention from viewers across the country.
Overall, the Holiday Bowl is not just a thrilling sporting event, but also a significant driver of economic growth for San Diego. As the game approaches, local businesses are gearing up for a busy and profitable holiday season, thanks to the financial boom set to kick off with the arrival of football fans from near and far.
