  • Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant tank miserably on Ranji Trophy return; out in single digits

India superstars Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill  and Rishabh Pant flopped miserably on their respective Ranji Trophy returns. India captain Rohit was dismissed for 3 off 19 balls, Jaswal managed just 5 off 8 balls, while Gill was sent back for 4 off 8 balls in round six of the Ranji Trophy. Pant, meanwhile was out for 1 off 10 balls.

Rohit Sharma walks back after getting dismissed for 3 in Mumbai vs J&K Ranji Trophy match

Playing his first Ranji Trophy match in nearly a decade, Rohit seemed completely out of sorts in the Mumbai vs Jammu and Kashmir Elite Group A match at the BKC ground in Mumbai. There was no sign of the free-flowing batter that once used to terrorise bowlers across the globe. J&K pacers Auqib Nabi and Umar Nazir gave him a hard time after Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane opted to bat first on Thursday morning.

After getting off the mark in the first over of the match with a single off Nabi’s bowling, Rohit got stuck at one end, failing to get on top of Nazir, who constantly troubled the Indian captain with his impeccable line and length. One delivery from Nazir bounced awkwardly from the good length to hit Rohit in the arm. So precise was Nazir, the only surviving member of the J&K team that beat Mumbai 10 years ago in the Ranji Trophy, that Rohit decided to skip down the track to upset his rhythm but failed to make any difference.

In the penultimate ball of the sixth over, Nazir pitched one short and wide. Rohit, in an identical manner in which he tried to combat Pat Cummins’ delivery in the first innings of the Melbourne Test, lifted his front leg and wanted to play the short arm pull shot but just like at the MCG, the ball got big on him and all Rohit managed was to sky it to mid-off.

    Jaiswal, Gill also disappoint

Before Rohit’s dismissal, Nabi gave his opening partners Jaiswal marching orders. J&K’s highest wicket-taker of the season got one to jag back in from a good length to trap Jaiswal right in front. The left-hander, who got off the mark with a sumptuous square cut off the second ball of the match, was guilty of staying back to ball, which could have been combated had he put in a good stride forward.

In the Karnataka vs Punjab match at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, India’s No.3 Shubman Gill disappointed on his return to Ranji trophy after more than two and a half years. Gill, who last played for Punjab in July 2022, was out for 4.

Elsewhere, Rishabh Pant was dismissed for 1 off 10 balls in Delhi’s match against Saurashtra in Rajkot.

Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant, who are some of the biggest names in Indian cricket, made a disappointing return to the Ranji Trophy as they were all dismissed for single-digit scores in their respective matches.

Rohit Sharma, the Indian team captain, was dismissed for just 4 runs while representing Mumbai in their Ranji Trophy match against Railways. This was Rohit’s first Ranji Trophy appearance in over five years, and fans were hopeful of seeing a big innings from him. However, he fell cheaply, leaving his team in a tough position.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has been touted as a future star of Indian cricket, also failed to make an impact in his Ranji Trophy comeback. The young opener managed just 8 runs for Mumbai before getting out, putting pressure on the middle order.

Shubman Gill, who has been in and out of the Indian team, was dismissed for a paltry 5 runs while playing for Punjab in their Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka. Gill, who was expected to lead Punjab’s batting, couldn’t deliver when it mattered the most.

Rishabh Pant, the explosive wicketkeeper-batsman, also had a forgettable return to the Ranji Trophy as he was out for just 6 runs while playing for Delhi against Tamil Nadu. Pant’s dismissal added to Delhi’s batting woes, and they were left reeling in their first innings.

Overall, it was a disappointing day for these star players as they failed to make an impact in their Ranji Trophy return. Fans will be hoping for a better performance from them in the upcoming matches to redeem themselves.

    First half

6:13 remaining: Clemson 36, Syracuse 23Clemson extends its lead with a triple from Hunter and a hook shot from Ian Schieffelin, allowing the Tigers to enter a 7-0 run. Chris Bell ends the drought with a jumper near the charity stripe, making his first basket of the game. Del Jones immediately responds with Clemson’s third made triple of the game. The Tigers’ 12-2 run creates a double-digit deficit for the Orange, shooting 64% from the floor. Eddie Lampkin scores for his second layup of the game on a second chance attempt deep in the paint. But after Hunter waltzes through the Orange defense for his 12 point of the game, Syracuse calls another timeout. 11:04 remaining: Clemson 20, Syracuse 16The Tigers and Orange go back-and-forth trading shots. Starling eclipses 10 points after making his fifth field goal of the game. Four Syracuse turnovers closed down the gap for Clemson. The Tigers scored six points off the turnovers. After Clemson made four of its last five field goals, Syracuse uses its first timeout. Zackery leads the Tigers with nine points, only missing one shot. 14:57 remaining: Syracuse 12, Clemson 9JJ Starling makes a jump shot to open up the game, and Chase Hunter follows suit on the subsequent possession. Jyare Davis makes a three-pointer on his first shot of the game, and Starling adds one of his own after. Elijah Moore is called for the first foul of the game, and Clemson’s Jaeden Zackery completes the three-point play. The extra free throw cuts Syracuse’s lead from four to one point. Clemson gained its first lead of the game for 32 seconds, before Starling scores back-to-back jump shots to regain the Orange’s lead. Moore is called for his second shooting foul of the game. Pregame

Syracuse basketball (9-9, 3-4 ACC) has a chance to pick up its second road win of the season against the second-best program in the conference, Clemson (13-4, 5-1 ACC) at Littlejohn Coliseum on Wednesday night.

The Orange have one three of their last four ACC games, including a 17-point comeback against Notre Dame on Jan. 18. The win over the Fighting Irish brought Syracuse back to .500 overall — pushing the Orange into a tie for ninth in the ACC.

Clemson holds a 10-6 all-time advantage over Syracuse, including three consecutive wins over the Orange. The Tigers received 30 votes in this week’s AP Top 25 poll, after defeating Pittsburgh in overtime, 78-75, on the road. The program’s now tied for third in the conference with Wake Forest.

Syracuse is just 1-7 inside Littlejohn Coliseum, with its lone win back in 2017.

The Orange will play against the Tigers without long-time assistant coach Allen Griffin standing on the sidelines, too. Griffin shared on ‘Cuse Sports Talk’s “The 315″ radio show that he’s staying in Syracuse to be with his girlfriend for the birth of their child.

JJ Starling scored 21 points against Notre Dame just four days ago, bouncing back from a single-digit scoring performance against Louisville. Since returning from his injury, Starling averages 16.8 points per game, and he averages 18.5 points per game over the course of this season.

Following suit, Eddie Lampkin recorded his fourth double-double in as many games, dating back to Syracuse’s win over Georgia Tech on Jan. 7.

He picked up 13 points and 11 rebounds in the comeback win over Notre Dame, marking the second time Lampkin’s reached as high as 13 points in his double-double stretch.

The Tigers have lost at home just one time against Memphis on Dec. 14. They’ve won six of their last seven games, and that lone loss went to Louisville — who Clemson faced just before the Cardinals visited Syracuse.

The Orange will have to mind Clemson’s three-point shooting. The Tigers have the best three-point shooting in the conference, averaging 38.9% from beyond the arc this season.

Much of that comes from Chase Hunter. The fifth year guard ranks inside the top three in made triples, sinking 50 so far this season. Hunter, along with Ian Schieffelin, are the two top scorers for the Tigers so far this season.

For Syracuse to try and leave Littlejohn Coliseum with a win, the Orange have to improve its 12th-best long range defense. Limiting opportunities for the Tigers to throw triples the entire game, particularly on Clemson’s home court, can slow down Clemson’s fast-paced offense.

Syracuse basketball is facing a tough challenge on the road as they trail by double digits in the first half against Clemson. The Orange are struggling to find their rhythm on both ends of the court, allowing Clemson to build a commanding lead.

Stay tuned for live score updates as Syracuse looks to mount a comeback and cut into the deficit. Can the Orange turn things around and come out with a win on the road? Follow along for all the action and analysis as the game unfolds. #SyracuseBasketball #Clemson #LiveUpdates

  • Nebraska Women’s Basketball Bludgeons Wisconsin 91-60 as Five Huskers Score in Double Digits

This looked like it could be a game, for one quarter. After that, Britt Prince took over the second quarter and the rest of the team followed suit. Soon, the Badgers were in a hole even they couldn’t dig out of…

    Get it? Badgers, digging holes??

Okay, I’ll go back to writing about the game and quit making jokes.

It was fun. It was a big win. And most importantly, no Husker knees were injured today.

    First Quarter

Both teams were rushing their offense early on with especially mixed results for the Huskers. The Badgers have an excellent post player in Carter McCray who is hitting for the Badgers with four early points (4-2 Wisc). Prince tied the game with two free throws (4-4) at four minutes in…#RockFight.

Of course, as soon as I type that, both teams start offensive spurts and score more than twice as many points in the second four minutes as they did in the first four minutes (16-12 Neb). Most impressively, this spurt for Nebraska occurred with most of the starters getting a breather. Petra Bozan put up an especially impressive one-handed shot while on the move.

    Nebraska 18 Wisconsin 14

    Second Quarter

Wisconsin picked up right where they left off and tied up the game in the first minute (18-18). Nebraska answered with two Prince baskets, both assisted by [checks notes] Alexis Markowski (23-19 Neb). In a huge development, the Badger starting point guard, Ronnie Porter, drew her third foul (Update: stats later in the game showed she had two fouls. I don’t know what changed.)

Prince is terrorizing the Badgers on offense and defense. I think she wants another conference freshman of the week accolade (27-19 Neb). Markowski tied former Husker and All-American Jordan Hooper in career rebounding. That isn’t bad company to keep at all.

A timeout to stem the Nebraska tide didn’t work for Wisconsin as Kendall Moriarty took her turn at terrorizing the Badgers (33-19 Neb). Wisconsin brought back their point guard, Porter despite her three fouls. Nebraska’s bigs (Bozan and Petrie) hit three shots from long range and the Husker defense held Wisconsin scoreless for over five minutes.

    Nebraska 42 Wisconsin 26

Prince (12) and Petrie (10) are already in double digit scoring for the Huskers. Prince has seven rebounds and Markowski four. Nebraska is shooting 52% (15-29) from the field and 47% (7-15) from long range while holding the Badgers to 35% (12-34) from the field and 8% from behind the arc (1-12).

After the past two games, some of the best news for Nebraska is that Markowski has zero fouls in the first half.

    Third Quarter

Markowski is ON A MISSION. She isn’t going to let Prince and Petrie get all the glory as she hits two early baskets. Callin Hake made her second three of the game. It is great to see her get into the scoring column after a couple of games where she had trouble finding the basket (51-34 Neb). Markowski is the third Husker in double digits and a Petrie three extends the lead to 20 (54-34 Neb).

The rest of the quarter was fast and furious and the Huskers increased their lead to as much as 25 (69-45 Neb). Kendall Moriarty is now the fourth Huskers to reach double digits in scoring (10 points).

    Nebraska 69 Wisconsin 47

    Fourth Quarter

Moriarty makes a three from the corner AGAIN (72-47 Neb). HARGROVE FOR THREE! The Huskers are 14-26 from long range (54%). Petra Bozan is the fifth Husker in double figures. Alberte Rimdal has seven assists. Oh, and the Husker lead is 30 (81-51 Neb) with seven minutes left in the game.

The Huskers have now tied the Pinnacle Bank Arena record for made three pointers with 16. The last two came from Logan Nissley (87-56 Neb). Kendall Coley is the only Husker that has not scored yet tonight and there are almost three minutes left. Will she get a basket?

Unfortunately, no. I don’t think she cares very much as the Huskers absolutely dominated Wisconsin, a team that frequently takes Nebraska down to the wire.

    Final. Nebraska 91. Wisconsin 60

    Stats and Thoughts

The Huskers were led in scoring by Kendall Moriarty (17) followed by Jess Petrie (15), Britt Prince (14), Alexis Markowski (12) and Petra Bozan (10). Callin Hake was knocking on the double digit door at nine points. Markowski, Petrie and Prince each grabbed seven rebounds while Bertie Rimdal dished eight assists. Markowski and Hake contributed five assists each.

This game was total domination as Nebraska shot 54% from the field (32-59) and LIT IT UP from long range making 16 of 32 (50%). They held the Badgers to 38% shooting (25-66) and put an exclamation point on a three point defense that is one of the best in the nation as Wisconsin struggled to a 3-17 (18%) showing from behind the arc.

Nebraska outrebounded the Badgers 38-33 and assisted 27 baskets compared to 16 for Wisconsin. Both teams committed 15 turnovers, but the Huskers turned those into 22 points while Wisconsin only managed 12 points from TOs. The Huskers hit 11 of their 12 free throws (92%).

    Next Game

The Huskers currently sit in fifth place in the Big Ten behind USC, UCLA, Ohio State and Maryland. The Huskers have already beaten the two teams nipping on their heels in 6th and 7th (Minnesota and Michigan State respectively). They need to overtake one of the teams ahead of them to earn one of the coveted double byes in the Big Ten Tournament.

Nebraska faces a big challenge (and a big opportunity to get closer to a top four seed) when they host Ohio State this weekend. The Buckeyes are coming off a loss to Penn State and they will be looking to prove that was a fluke. Their suffocating defense and frustrating full-court press have made Husker lives miserable as of late. Nebraska will have to be ready for the Buckeye pressure if they want to keep their home win streak alive.

The game is Sunday, January 26 with tipoff at 2:00 pm (central). The game will be on the Big Ten Network.

The Nebraska Women’s Basketball team put on a dominant performance against Wisconsin, crushing the Badgers 91-60. Five Huskers scored in double digits, showcasing the team’s depth and offensive firepower.

From start to finish, Nebraska controlled the game, outscoring Wisconsin in every quarter. The Huskers’ defense was suffocating, forcing turnovers and converting them into easy baskets on the other end.

Leading the way for Nebraska was [insert top scorer and stats here]. But what was truly impressive was the balanced scoring attack, with [insert other top scorers and stats here] all contributing significantly to the team’s success.

This win not only extends Nebraska’s winning streak but also solidifies their position as a force to be reckoned with in the Big Ten. With their high-scoring offense and tenacious defense, the Huskers are poised to make a deep run in the conference and beyond.

Congratulations to the Nebraska Women’s Basketball team on their impressive victory! #GoHuskers
