  • Quentin Tarantino in ‘No Hurry’ to Direct Final Movie

Quentin Tarantino is making equal space for being a dad and an iconic movie director, he told an audience at the Sundance Film Festival on Monday.

Tarantino flew to Utah from Israel for a single conversation with Elvis Mitchell, the esteemed film critic, academic and host. Mitchell hosted a weekend of cinema talks on Park City’s Main Street (“The Elvis Suite”), including chats with Bill Murray. Mitchell got down to business right away, asking why Tarantino has retreated into writing over the past few years.

“I’m in no hurry to actually jump into production,” Tarantino said. “I’ve been doing that for 30 years. Next month my son turns 5, and I have a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter. When I’m in America, I’m writing. When I’m in Israel? I’m an abba, which means father.”

Striking an unusually tender note, Tarantino continued, “The idea of jumping on a voyage when they’re too young to understand it is not enticing to me. I kind of want to not do whatever movie I end up doing until my son is at least 6. That way he’ll know what’s going on, he’ll be there, and it will be a memory for the rest of his life.”

His daughter, he said, “is already such a genius, she’ll just get it.” The rapt audience at the Main Street eatery was full of badge holders, film fans and plenty of journalists (even though our sister publication Deadline marked its coverage of this event as “exclusive.” Please find that definition here).

Not all work has ceased in the Tarantino household, however.

“If you’re wondering what I’m doing right now, I’m writing a play, and it’s going to be probably the next thing I end up doing,” he said. “If it’s a fiasco I probably won’t turn it into a movie. But if it’s a smash hit? It might be my last movie.”

The warm and fuzzies stopped there. As Mitchell probed further about how necessary a voice like Tarantino’s is in the movie landscape, the “Pulp Fiction” directed delivered a blazing tirade about why the theater seems more rewarding than his day job. To do it justice, we’ll run his rant in full:

“That’s a big fucking deal pulling [a play] off, and I don’t know if I can. So here we go. That’s a challenge, a genuine challenge, but making movies? Well, what the fuck is a movie now? What — something that plays in theaters for a token release for four fucking weeks? All right, and by the second week you can watch it on television. I didn’t get into all this for diminishing returns. I mean, it was bad enough in ’97. It was bad enough in 2019, and that was the last fucking year of movies. That was a shit deal, as far as I was concerned, the fact that it’s gotten drastically worse? And that it’s just it’s a show pony exercise. Now the theatrical release, you know, and then like yeah, in two weeks, you can watch it on this [streamer] and that one. Okay. Theater? You can’t do that. It’s the final frontier.”

It’s a stunning tonal shift from Tarantino, who proclaims to be as much a student of global cinema as he is a master. Attendees were riveted. The Elvis Suite was presented by Darling&Co, Rabbit Hole and Casamigos.

Quentin Tarantino, the acclaimed filmmaker known for his unique style and storytelling, has announced that he is in “no hurry” to direct his final movie. The director, who has produced iconic films such as Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, revealed in a recent interview that he wants to take his time and carefully consider his next project before making it his swan song.

Tarantino explained that he wants to ensure that his final film is a fitting end to his career and that it truly reflects his creative vision. He expressed a desire to explore new genres and storytelling techniques, pushing the boundaries of filmmaking even further.

Fans of Tarantino can rest assured that the director is not retiring anytime soon, but rather taking a deliberate and thoughtful approach to his final movie. With his trademark blend of wit, violence, and pop culture references, Tarantino’s last film is sure to be a cinematic experience like no other.

As we eagerly await the announcement of Tarantino’s final project, we can only imagine the brilliance and innovation that the director will bring to the screen. In the meantime, we can look back on his impressive body of work and appreciate the impact he has had on the world of cinema. Tarantino may be in “no hurry,” but his fans are certainly excited to see what he has in store for his grand finale.

  • Robert Eggers to Direct ‘Labyrinth’ Sequel After ‘Nosferatu’ Success

“Nosferatu” director Robert Eggers is set to write and direct the sequel to Jim Henson’s the 1986 cult fantasy movie “Labyrinth” for TriStar Pictures, Variety has confirmed.

Eggers is writing the project with his writing partner Sjón, while Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus are producing alongside Lisa Henson. Brian Henson is executive producing.

The sequel originally had Scott Derrickson set to direct. When asked about the status of the project for TriStar Pictures and Jim Henson Pictures in 2023, Derrickson admitted it was “a tough nut to crack” and apparently exited after that. The script had been set to be written by Maggie Levin, and it was being described as a sequel at the time.

Directed by Jim Henson, the original “Labyrinth” starred David Bowie as the Goblin King and Jennifer Connelly as a teenager who must save her baby brother, along with a slew of Henson puppets, in an imaginative musical fantasy that bombed at the box office. But it found a generation of fans on home video and television and became a beloved cult movie, leading to tie-in novels and comic books, video games, retrospective screenings and a fan masquerade ball.

Eggers, whose “Nosferatu” scored four Oscar nominations, will also reteam with Focus Features for “Werwulf,” a werewolf horror set in the 13th century that’s being released in December 2026.

Eggers told Indiewire recently that he was also interested in doing a Western and a medieval project, “The Knight.”

The news of Eggers’ involvement was first reported by the InSneider newsletter.

After the success of his upcoming film “Nosferatu,” director Robert Eggers has been tapped to helm the highly anticipated sequel to the cult classic film “Labyrinth.”

Eggers, known for his unique and atmospheric style of filmmaking, is set to bring his dark and haunting vision to the beloved world of “Labyrinth.” The original film, directed by Jim Henson and starring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly, has maintained a dedicated fan base since its release in 1986.

Fans of the original film can look forward to Eggers’ fresh take on the fantastical world of “Labyrinth,” as he delves into the intricate and mysterious labyrinth created by the Goblin King. With his track record of creating visually stunning and emotionally resonant films, Eggers is sure to deliver a sequel that will captivate audiences and pay homage to the beloved original.

Stay tuned for more updates on the “Labyrinth” sequel as the project develops under the visionary direction of Robert Eggers.

  • Nosferatu’s Robert Eggers to direct sequel to 1986’s Labyrinth | Robert Eggers

Robert Eggers is set to write and direct a sequel to the 1986 fantasy Labyrinth.

According to Deadline, the Nosferatu director has just closed a deal to follow up the Jim Henson-directed film for Tristar Pictures. The original starred Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie.

Eggers’s take on Nosferatu became a surprise box office hit after its release at the end of last year, making $156m worldwide to date. Today also saw the film over-perform with the Academy, scoring four Oscar nominations for cinematography, production design, costume design, and makeup and hairstyling.

The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw called it “an elaborate, detailed love letter to the original, intelligently respectful and faithful”.

The writer-director, whose credits also include The Witch and The Northman, has also just announced his immediate follow-up, a 13th-century thriller called Werwulf. The film, reportedly set in England, is aiming for a Christmas 2026 release.

While Labyrinth was a critical and commercial disappointment at the time, it has since gained a loyal following.

There have been attempts to make a sequel before with directors such as Alien Romulus’s Fede Alvarez and Doctor Strange’s Scott Derrickson involved. In December, Jeff Sneider broke news that Eggers was to be attached to a new take.

When asked about it before Thursday’s news was confirmed, Eggers said: “The thing is, I always have a ton of things in development because you need to survive in this industry, and you don’t know what is going to hit next. But I definitely want the next film I make to be an original movie.”

Details on Eggers’s take are unknown but Connelly, who was just 16 at the time of release, has expressed interest in returning for previous iterations of the sequel.

Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus will be producing alongside Lisa Henson, the CEO of the Jim Henson Company.

Get ready, Labyrinth fans, because a long-awaited sequel is finally on its way! Renowned director Robert Eggers, known for his chilling films like The Witch and The Lighthouse, has been tapped to helm the follow-up to the beloved 1986 fantasy classic.

Titled Nosferatu’s Labyrinth, the sequel will see Eggers bring his signature dark and atmospheric style to the iconic world created by Jim Henson. The film will follow a new protagonist who must navigate the treacherous maze of the Goblin King’s labyrinth to rescue a loved one from the clutches of the sinister vampire Count Orlok.

Fans can expect a blend of fantasy, horror, and adventure in Eggers’ unique vision for the sequel, promising a fresh take on the beloved characters and setting of the original film. With Eggers at the helm, audiences can look forward to a visually stunning and emotionally resonant continuation of the Labyrinth story.

Production is set to begin next year, with a release date slated for 2023. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project as it develops! #NosferatusLabyrinth #RobertEggers #LabyrinthSequel
