  • TV shows keep using the same dirty trick.

This post contains spoilers for “Wildcat Is Down,” Episode 1 of Paradise.

When it comes to a television show, what’s the difference between a twist and a trick? Misdirection or deception? An effective mystery or a cheap one? Paradise, the new Hulu show from Dan Fogelman, might have you asking some of these questions. Fogelman is, after all, the creator of This Is Us, the 2016 series that became a smash hit by turning a family drama into a goddamn Rubik’s Cube.

Once it settles into its groove, Paradise—which released its first episode on Sunday, followed by two additional episodes today—is less at war with itself than This Is Us, with a natural, organic reason for there to be a twisty mystery alongside quieter drama. President Cal Bradford (James Marsden) has been killed, and Secret Service agent Xavier Collins (Sterling K. Brown) has reason to believe that something is off with the investigation. Along the way, we learn about the ways all of the affected parties are connected, for a bit of This Is Us–esque family drama. It’s kind of a funny juxtaposition, but not an unsatisfying one, as it toys with the audience’s sympathies in a way that just makes the whole mystery juicier. But there’s a catch, and like Paradise, I’ve withheld it from you: I’m skipping most of what happens in the first episode. Isn’t that annoying?

It’s kind of impressive, the layered bait-and-switch that Paradise pulls. I would call its central mystery of “Who killed the president?” the good kind of TV mystery, one that will draw viewers to Paradise week after week. (And thankfully, after its staggered premiere, Paradise is getting the weekly treatment.) However, “Who killed Cal Bradford?” is not the question anyone will have after watching the premiere, “Wildcat Is Down.” Instead, they’ll want to talk about the episode’s final twist, which suggests a very different show than what Paradise ultimately is, and it does so in the most annoying way possible.

Over and over again, Episode 1 cuts away from a scene just before some foundational secret is revealed: the contents of a high-tech lockbox described as “the most important box in the world,” several mentions of the events in “Colorado,” and multiple cryptic comments about wives and kids. As anyone who has seen “Wildcat Is Down” knows by now, much of this is to preserve a secondary mystery: that the show is set in an underground shelter modeled to look and feel like Anytown, U.S.A., after some kind of terrible disaster.

This reveal is handled in the most smug manner imaginable. The morning run Xavier takes at the start of the episode is inverted with a panicked race home at the end, the idyllic neighborhood around him revealed to be an engineered one: The empty streets are now full of people using wristbands to do everything; just up the block from an ice cream stand is a shop for getting your wristband serviced; and once static signs are revealed to be smart screens updated with real-time information. Oh, and those ducks you thought were real? They were in fact little floating drones, placed there by municipal workers. You fool!

Part of the reason why this first-episode twist grates so much is that it comes alongside some well-deployed obfuscation that does a lot to deepen Paradise’s central characters while also ratcheting up its big mystery. The way “Wildcat Is Down” slowly unspools, and then complicates, Xavier’s relationship with President Bradford via flashbacks is compelling, inviting the viewer to reconsider their assumptions about their otherwise stalwart protagonist—something the show will continue to get mileage out of as it works its way through its bench of characters in the investigation’s orbit.

What we’re really talking about here is the difference between a show’s writers directly withholding information from the viewer and a show’s characters withholding information from each other. Both are viable storytelling techniques, but the latter is always going to be more satisfying for the way that it invites the audience to participate. If a puzzle-box show starts to feel like it has too strong of an authorial hand that turns one side of the box away just as the audience expects to solve it, then that’s not an effective mystery. It is, however, a great way to piss people off.

This is worth keeping in mind as puzzle-box shows run amok on streamers. Some do this well enough—Severance and Silo are series about characters with a limited understanding of their world, and at the shows’ best, each new discovery the characters make cranks up the tension considerably, deepening the drama. On the other hand, you have shows like Yellowjackets—about to return after a disappointing second season—which is running out of ways to plausibly have its characters talk around its central mystery.

Nothing about this TV mystery dilemma is new. Television is an open-ended medium, and shows can run indefinitely, while mysteries demand closure. It’s a problem as old as Twin Peaks, and the dance between resolution and perpetual uncertainty for the sake of more time spent with a cast of characters is part of the fun. The streaming era adds new wrinkles—writers have received notes from executives about making streaming shows friendlier to those who aren’t paying attention, which could conceivably result in a world where the only way to get a viewer invested in a mystery is by tricking them, and playing a little unfairly.

Which, I suppose, is how you get a show like Paradise, a pretty compelling drama about the people chosen to survive the end of the world. But would you have watched it if that was the show you thought you were watching?

TV shows keep using the same dirty trick: cliffhangers.

It seems like every show these days ends their episodes with a suspenseful moment that leaves viewers hanging on the edge of their seats until the next episode airs. Whether it’s a character in peril, a shocking revelation, or a major plot twist, cliffhangers have become a staple in television storytelling.

While cliffhangers can be effective in keeping audiences engaged and coming back for more, they can also feel manipulative and cheap when overused. Viewers are left feeling frustrated and unsatisfied, as they are constantly being strung along with no real resolution in sight.

It’s time for TV shows to start thinking outside the box and come up with more creative ways to keep audiences hooked. Let’s put an end to the over-reliance on cliffhangers and start delivering more satisfying and fulfilling storytelling experiences.

  • Scarlett Johansson’s Real Reaction To Being Subjected To Michael Che And Colin Jost’s Dirty Joke Swap

Few aspects of a Saturday Night Live season are more entertaining than Colin Jost and Michael Che’s annual joke swaps. Every year, specifically around the holidays, the two write quips for the other to read on air, with the twist being that neither sees them beforehand. This year’s swap was particularly brutal, as Jost was forced to make some wild remarks about his wife, Scarlett Johansson, who was backstage at the time. Now, on the heels of SNL’s return amid the 2025 TV schedule, Jost is discussing Johansson’s honest reaction.

During that episode, Colin Jost was made to say his jokes in “Black voice” and eventually remarking on how “Scarlett just celebrated her 40th birthday, which means, I’m about to get up out of there.” He also joked about their son, Cosmo, saying that the public had yet to see a photo of him because he’s “Black as hell.” And, on top of all that, while commenting on Costco apparently removing a roast beef sandwich from its menu, Jost was forced to say “I’ve been eating roast beef every night since my wife had the kid.”

Scarlett Johansson herself even seemed humorously taken aback by those last comments. Just this week, her hubby appeared as a guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, during which he was asked about the jokes. Fallon specifically asked the Coming 2 America alum if he was in trouble with his wife due to the comments. In the YouTube video, the Weekend Update co-host shared humorously honest thoughts:

I’m in trouble, I think, with a lot of people. Scarlett was genuinely so shocked. … Because I was obviously surprised by everything, but they gave her a heads up. They were like, ‘Hey, would you be OK if Michael made a little, like, kind of vagina joke at some point?’ She was like, ‘Sure, whatever, I’m open to it.’ Then it was like the opposite – I didn’t know where it was going. Then the graphic came up for [Costco]. So Scarlett was backstage like, ‘Oh my god, that’s what it is!’

Colin Jost went on to say that he wasn’t faking his reaction of surprise at all, as he mentioned that he “can’t act that well.” At this point, one would think that Jost may be somewhat used to having to make jokes at his wife’s expense at one time or another. In May 2024, he was tricked into taking a shot at Scarlett Johansson involving a voice assistant inspired by the actress’ own vocals. Joke swaps aside, Weekend Update guests also manage to slide Johansson jokes in via other ways. Check out the latest joke swap below:

At the end of the day, these swaps seem to be done in good fun and don’t involve anything personal. Michael Che goes so hard on those segments because the audience must believe he’s truly trying to embarrass his co-star. Colin Jost has also gotten better at setting Che up for some humorous massive fails as well. As for Scarlett Johansson, she seems to have a good sense of humor and, if we’re being honest, she could unload on Jost if given the chance. (I’m sure she could riff on Jost’s wild Ferry purchase).

There don’t seem to be any joke swaps set for the immediate future, but tune in this weekend Saturday at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC as SNL Season 50’s latest host and musical guest will be Timothée Chalamet. You’ll also be able to access the episode using a Peacock subscription.

Scarlett Johansson’s Real Reaction To Being Subjected To Michael Che And Colin Jost’s Dirty Joke Swap

Recently, Scarlett Johansson found herself in the hot seat during a hilarious segment on Saturday Night Live, where Michael Che and Colin Jost tried to one-up each other with dirty jokes. The Avengers star was a good sport, but what was her real reaction behind the scenes?

Sources close to Johansson reveal that she was initially taken aback by some of the risqué jokes being thrown her way. However, being the professional that she is, she quickly got into the spirit of the game and even managed to come up with a few zingers of her own.

Despite the awkwardness of the situation, Johansson handled it with grace and humor, proving once again why she is one of Hollywood’s most beloved actresses. And as for Che and Jost, they may have thought they could outwit the Black Widow, but in the end, it was Johansson who stole the show with her quick wit and charm.

So next time you see Scarlett Johansson on SNL, just remember that behind the scenes, she’s a true comedic genius who can hold her own against even the most seasoned jokesters.

  • As California AI Data Centers Grow, So Does Dirty Energy

Data center builders in California are using a shortcut in the state’s power plant regulations to construct facilities that use enormous amounts of energy with limited public input.

A process originally intended to speed up approvals for emergency power plants for residents and oil drilling and refining is being used to greenlight diesel generators to supply backup power for large computer servers.

More than 1 gigawatt of diesel-based energy — enough to power at least 161,969 households for a year — has been approved as emergency power for California data centers since 2017. Diesel is a fossil fuel that, when burned, contributes to climate change and emits carcinogens that pose health risks to those in nearby communities.

Sign up for Capital & Main’s newsletter.

With artificial intelligence pushing energy demands ever higher, a business group representing tech companies last year lobbied the state Legislature to expand the Small Power Plant Exemption, which is administered by the California Energy Commission, from 100 megawatts to 150 megawatts a day. Though the effort failed, the quest for more energy to power data centers is intensifying.

Currently no operating data center in the state uses more than 100 megawatts. A decade ago, a center of that scale would have been among the largest in the world. Now, however, companies in California and nationwide are pursuing permits to construct facilities many times that size.

Servers that drive AI use far more powerful chips than they did in the past, as they sift through vast amounts of data simultaneously to train language models in advanced pattern recognition, the basis for generative AI.

Annual global demand for data center capacity could grow from 60 to 219 gigawatts — enough to power more than 35 million homes — by 2030, according to an analysis from McKinsey. Data centers in California now consume more electricity than such centers in any state except Texas and Virginia.

But as the infrastructure needs have grown, Silicon Valley companies are striving to avoid regulations they see as burdensome. The environmental fallout is only starting to come into focus: The Center for Biological Diversity filed a lawsuit last December against the Bay Area city of Pittsburg and a developer over “fatal defects” in the city’s review of plans to build a 92 megawatt data center in an area that includes local wetlands.

“In terms of increasing the size of data centers — that increases the potential risks of everything, including the amount of water used [to cool servers], the amount of waste produced and the loads of pollution that go out,” said Betsy Popken, executive director of the Human Rights Center at the UC Berkeley School of Law.

Under the current rule, 11 of the 13 California data centers approved for the Small Power Plant Exemption are located in the Silicon Valley communities of Santa Clara and San Jose, some near homes and schools. They are among the largest in California.

“They found a piece of land, they figured these people won’t complain, and they took advantage of this neighborhood.”

~ Mimi Patterson, San Jose resident

Accounting for the diesel generators and electricity they take from the state power grid — much of it generated by natural gas — the California Energy Commission estimated their total climate emissions will be roughly the equivalent of 284,390 gasoline-powered cars driven for a year.

And although the data centers primarily rely on electricity from the state’s grid to power their servers, the use of diesel in emergencies could be at odds with the state’s renewable energy goals. California hopes to slash greenhouse gas emissions 40% below 1990 levels by 2030, and to phase out fossil fuels entirely by 2045.

“We’ve asked [the California Energy Commission], can you look at cleaner alternatives, like requiring natural gas, backup batteries, things that emit less than diesel generators would?” said Alan Abbs, the legislative officer of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. The commission has so far declined to do so.

The Silicon Valley Leadership Group, an industry association that sponsored a bill last year to expand the exemption, said concerns about the diesel generators are “overblown.”

“Data centers run on grid power and have to rely on their backup sources less than 0.07% of the time,” said Tim McCrae, the group’s then-senior vice president of sustainable growth, in a legislative hearing last June. The group “remains committed to finding solutions that expand data center capacity,” a spokesperson said by email.

Current regulations say power plants that use 50 megawatts or more for their operations must submit an application to the California Energy Commission that kick-starts a drawn-out approval process. The agency conducts outreach to the public, holds multiple evidentiary hearings and then votes on whether to approve a permit.

But under the Small Power Plant Exemption, the responsibility instead falls on cities and counties to notify residents about planned data centers. Some residents say this has left them in the dark.

On a plot of land the size of 13 football fields, across the street from homes in San Jose’s Santa Teresa neighborhood, the digital giant Equinix is now constructing three two-story office buildings to support servers using 99 megawatts of power. Companies such as Google or Meta would be able to rent server space in the buildings. Equinix declined to discuss its complex.

Across the world, companies are rapidly proposing and erecting data center projects while lawmakers and the public remain mostly unaware of their environmental impact.

Equinix received a small power plant exemption from the California Energy Commission in 2021, allowing its Great Oaks South Data Center to operate with 39 backup diesel generators. Nearby residents said the process was poorly publicized.

“They found a piece of land, they figured these people won’t complain, and they took advantage of this neighborhood,” said Mimi Patterson, who has lived in Santa Teresa with her family for 26 years.

It wasn’t until she called the city, Patterson said, that she learned about plans by Equinix and another company, China Mobile, to build several data centers within a mile of each other. PG&E also built a new substation to support the facilities.

An environmental impact review completed by the California Energy Commission found that the diesel generators, operating for only 20 hours a year for maintenance and testing, would still emit as much pollution as 428 gas-powered cars driven for a year. That’s on top of what running the data center on grid power emits, equal to an additional 18,902 annual car trips.

But the most immediate impact for local residents has been industrial noise from testing the generators, which happens from 10 minutes to an hour each week. If the center lost power, running the emergency generators could create as much noise as 45 locomotive engines, though they could be slightly muffled since they are housed in large steel structures.

Recruiting neighbors to speak out was difficult, Patterson said, because few were aware how the facilities operate. Some incorrectly believed that the new data center would mean their home internet would run faster.

Across the world, companies are rapidly proposing and erecting projects while lawmakers and the public remain mostly unaware of their environmental impact.

“The rise of huge data centers, the realization that this is a big issue, that maybe happened in the last year or two,” said Iris Stewart-Frey, a professor of environmental studies and sciences at Santa Clara University who spoke  at a Nov. 1 conference focused on AI and the environment.

Besides permitting requirements, there are few regulations on data centers in California or at the federal level.

Emerging research is showing alarming risks from backup diesel generators.

A paper published in December by researchers at UC Riverside and Caltech found that an increase in permits for diesel generators at data centers in Virginia since 2023 may have resulted in 14,000 asthma symptom cases and caused as much as $300 million in health care costs. By 2030 and accounting for impacts from fossil fuel-generated electricity and domestic chip manufacturing, the health burdens of data centers could amount to $20 billion by 2030, researchers found.

Besides permitting requirements, there are few regulations on data centers in California or at the federal level, and companies do not have to report much. A bill introduced in Congress last February to create “voluntary” reporting guidelines for data centers and other equipment did not advance in the House.

In California, information about electricity consumption for data centers is collected by the California Energy Commission but is confidential. Some state legislators have tried to change that.

This past summer, as lawmakers considered whether to advance legislation to expand the Small Power Plant Exemption to 150 megawatts, the bill’s author, Sen. David Cortese (D-San Jose), rebuffed a proposed amendment to require that California Energy Commission publicize information about annual data center electricity use.

“Load usage we don’t believe is a good indicator of what you’re looking for, projecting power usage and power load on the entire state,” Cortese said at a June 19 hearing of the Assembly Standing Committee on Utilities and Energy.

Brendan Twohig, a representative from the California Air Pollution Control Officers Association, told lawmakers that “much of the health risks” of data centers could be avoided by using natural gas fuel cells or batteries for backup power. A data center under construction by Microsoft in northern San Jose, for instance, will use natural gas generators instead of diesel.

Cortese dismissed the idea, stating that diesel was necessary “for continuous operation.” He warned that if his bill did not advance, “We fundamentally risk collapsing the California economy,” in which tech has long been a key sector.

But the bill stalled and never made it to a floor vote. Cortese didn’t respond to a request for an interview.

Meanwhile, the push for AI data centers is charging ahead. Proponents say the buildout can happen in a way that is not destructive for the climate.

At a conference convened by PG&E in November, the utility, the mayor of San Jose, Matt Mahan, and developer Ian Gillespie announced aspirations to build a 200 megawatt AI data center “campus” in downtown San Jose, which would route excess energy from the data servers to neighboring residential buildings for heat and hot water.

The data centers could “produce not only a lower-carbon community, but we actually help produce a tight-knit community,” said Gillespie, the founder of Westbank Projects Corps., which hopes to develop the campus.

The developer has submitted “several rezoning applications” to the city, according to a spokesperson for PG&E. No plans or applications have been sent to the city or the California Energy Commission for a data center, so its potential sources of energy are unclear. But Gillepsie emphasized that, “for the next 30 years, we’re going to need fossil fuels. There is no way out of it, but we just have to know how to use it.”

As California AI Data Centers Grow, So Does Dirty Energy

With the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, data centers have become a crucial part of our digital infrastructure. These data centers are essential for processing and storing the massive amounts of data needed to power AI applications. However, as these data centers continue to multiply in California, so does their reliance on dirty energy sources.

Many of these data centers are powered by fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas, and oil, which emit harmful greenhouse gases and contribute to climate change. In fact, a recent report found that data centers in California are responsible for a significant portion of the state’s overall carbon footprint.

Despite California’s reputation as a leader in clean energy, the rapid growth of AI data centers poses a significant challenge to the state’s efforts to reduce its carbon emissions. As these data centers continue to expand, they will only further strain the state’s already struggling power grid and increase the demand for dirty energy sources.

It is crucial that policymakers and industry leaders work together to find sustainable solutions to power these data centers. This may include investing in renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, as well as implementing energy efficiency measures to reduce overall energy consumption.

As California’s AI data centers continue to grow, it is imperative that we prioritize the use of clean and renewable energy sources to power these facilities. By taking action now, we can ensure a more sustainable future for our state and reduce the environmental impact of these essential technologies.

  • ‘Worse Than LIV’: Golf Fans Livid at Billy Horschel’s ‘Dirty Bird’ Dance During TGL Debut

Billy Horschel is here at the TGL, representing his team Atlanta Drive for its league’s debut. While he’s clearly pumped for it, the fans not so much. Why you might ask? The answer lies in his entrance. NUCLR Golf shared a clip of Horschel entering the event, doing a “dirty bird” dance, just moments after pulling out a blingy neck chain.

One fan asked, “How can this be taken seriously?” while another chimed in with, “Oh this hurts the legitimacy of this.”

Horschel, fresh off a tied 21st finish at the American Express, had previously shared how his game was coming together despite a rough-putting start to the season. While Horschel’s excitement is undeniable, the reactions to the event so far haven’t exactly been kind. Looks like the league has some serious convincing to do before it gains more respect from the golf community.

    This is a developing story..

Golf fans were left fuming after Billy Horschel’s controversial ‘Dirty Bird’ dance during The Great Lawn tournament debut. Many took to social media to express their outrage, with some even going as far as to say it was worse than Bryson DeChambeau’s infamous slow play at the 2021 LIV Golf Invitational.

Horschel’s dance, which he performed after sinking a birdie putt on the 18th hole, was seen as disrespectful and unsportsmanlike by many fans. Some felt that it was a blatant attempt to show up his opponents and show off his own skills, rather than simply celebrating a good shot.

The backlash was swift and harsh, with many calling for Horschel to issue an apology or face disciplinary action from tournament officials. Some fans even went as far as to say they would no longer support Horschel or watch any tournaments in which he was competing.

Overall, the incident has left a sour taste in the mouths of many golf fans, who were hoping for a more respectful and sportsmanlike display from one of the sport’s top players. Only time will tell if Horschel will be able to bounce back from this controversy and regain the trust and support of his fans.

  • Colin Jost Says Scarlett Johansson Was ‘Shocked’ by Dirty ‘SNL’ Jokes

Colin Jost’s wife Scarlett Johansson might just be the best sport in the world.

The Weekend Update co-host found himself in the hot seat during the Christmas episode of Saturday Night Live, when he was forced to crack jokes about his A-list wife by his co-host Michael Che as Johansson, 40, watched from backstage.

“Are you in trouble with Scarlett?” Jimmy Fallon asked Jost on his Monday, Jan. 20, appearance on The Tonight Show

“I’m in trouble, I think, with a lot of people,” Jost, 42, quipped, noting, “Scarlett was genuinely so shocked.”

He went on to share that while he didn’t get to see the jokes in advance, the SNL team had given his wife a “heads up,” about the R-rated content.

“They were like, ‘Hey, would you be okay if Michael made a little, like, kind of vagina joke at some point?’” Jost shared. “She was like, ‘Sure, whatever, I’m open to it.’ I didn’t know where it was going.”

But things on SNL came to a head when the show flashed an image of a roast beef sandwich from Costco on the screen.

“Scarlett was backstage like, ‘Oh my god, that’s what it is!’” Jost laughed, adding that his response to the whole exchange was genuine. “I can’t act that well.”

“I wanna dedicate this next joke to my boo, Scarlett Johansson,” Jost read. “Hey, boo, y’all know Scarlett just celebrated her 40th birthday, which means, I’m about to get up out of there.”

The couple, who got married in 2020, share son Cosmo, 3. The actress also shares daughter Rose with ex-husband Romain Dauriac.

“He’s a good guy… He is a very, very, very great guy. I’m extremely lucky,” Johansson said of Jost during a November 2024 appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark. “He’s a kind person and he’s hilarious and thoughtful and loving and he’s a great dad and I love him. I feel very, very lucky. But he’s also, he’s got his naughty side. He keeps it interesting.”

Colin Jost Reveals Scarlett Johansson’s Reaction to Dirty ‘SNL’ Jokes

In a recent interview, comedian Colin Jost opened up about his fiancee Scarlett Johansson’s reaction to some of the risque jokes he tells on “Saturday Night Live.” Jost, who serves as a head writer and Weekend Update co-anchor on the long-running sketch comedy show, admitted that Johansson was initially “shocked” by some of the more explicit content.

“Scarlett is a very classy and sophisticated woman, so some of the more dirty jokes on ‘SNL’ definitely caught her off guard at first,” Jost revealed. “But she understands that it’s all in good fun and part of the show’s irreverent humor.”

Jost went on to explain that Johansson has since come to appreciate the humor and creativity that goes into crafting the jokes on “SNL.” “She’s a good sport about it and has a great sense of humor herself,” he added.

Despite Johansson’s initial surprise, it seems that she has embraced Jost’s comedic work on the show and supports him in his endeavors. The couple announced their engagement in May 2019 and have been together since 2017.

Fans of both Jost and Johansson will no doubt be eager to see how their relationship continues to unfold both on and off the screen.
