GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — The Gwinnett County Public Schools Board of Education voted to release Superintendent Dr. Calvin Watts from his contract.
The board for the state’s largest school district held a special called executive session on Friday morning.
Channel 2 Gwinnett County Bureau Chief Matt Johnson was there as they voted 3-2 to terminate Watts’ contract, which was set to expire in July 2026. His contract will now expire in April 2025.
The decision comes as board members cite a need for new leadership, but did not offer a specific cause for his removal.
“We appreciate the wins under Dr. Watts, but the board has decided new leadership is needed to achieve our vision,” said Board Chair Dr. Adrienne Simmons.
Earlier in the week, Simmons says they met to negotiate Watts’ contract, but talks were unsuccessful.

Watts’ buyout is estimated at $750,000, a cost that drew criticism from board member Steve Gasper, who voted against the termination.
“This is a gross misuse of our powers at this time,” Gasper said. “It’s three and a half months left in the school year. Let’s give him an opportunity to finish out.”
Board members Gasper and Steve Knudsen both voted against the motion to dismiss Watts. Board members Dr. Tarece Johnson-Morgan, Rachel Stone and Simmons voted for it.
After the vote, Watts said the district made strides under his leadership since 2021.
“For the most part, we’ve seen success,” Watts said. “So, are we perfect? No. Are we making perfect progress? Absolutely. Proud of the work we’re doing.”
The board also voted 4-1 to appoint Dr. Al Taylor, current Chief of Schools, as interim superintendent, effective the same day Watts’ departure becomes official.
“We believe that he is the person to help manage this change,” Simmons said. “He is a force of stability. He represents someone that our principals have a relationship with, our many staff members have a relationship with.”
TRENDING STORIES:
Watts became the first Black superintendent in the district’s history when he took over in 2021.
In 2023, parents were split on whether the board should renew Watts’ contract.
They cited several reasons from that school year to say it’s time for a change, including a 35% increase in fights, the murder of Norcross High School student DeAndre Henderson near campus, and a controversial discipline policy that focused on “restorative practices” over tribunals.
The district will begin its search for a permanent superintendent, with board members emphasizing the importance of community involvement in the selection process.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The man who hopes to be President Donald Trump’s health secretary repeatedly asked to see “data” or “science” showing vaccines are safe – but when an influential Republican senator showed him evidence, he dismissed it.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. spent two days this week insisting to senators that he’s not anti-vaccine. He said that he instead supports vaccinations and will follow the science in overseeing the $1.7 trillion Department of Health and Human Services, which, among other duties, oversees vaccine research, approval and recommendations.
But Kennedy repeatedly refused to acknowledge scientific consensus that childhood vaccines don’t cause autism and that COVID-19 vaccines saved millions of lives, and he falsely asserted the government has no good vaccine safety monitoring. While appearing to ignore mainstream science, he cited flawed or tangential research to make his points, such as suggesting Black people may need different vaccines than whites.
His responses raised concern among health experts that Kennedy lacks basic skills needed for the job.
“He ignores science. He cherry-picks sometimes fraudulent studies. Sometimes he takes well-done studies and takes little pieces of them out of context,” said Dr. Sean O’Leary of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
He worries that Kennedy could further damage public confidence in vaccines and “we will see return of diseases that we really haven’t seen much of and unfortunately children will suffer.”
Kennedy “in many ways demonstrated his lack of capacity to really understand some details around science and evidence that I think he would really need to know,” said Dr. Georges Benjamin of the American Public Health Association.
Sen. Bill Cassidy, a Louisiana Republican and physician, said the science is clear that measles and other childhood vaccines are safe and not linked to autism.
Kennedy said if shown the data he would recommend those vaccines and “not only will I do that but I will apologize for any statements that misled people otherwise.”
So Cassidy pulled out and read aloud definitive scientific conclusions that vaccines don’t cause autism. Kennedy rebuffed him, instead mentioning a recent paper that outside experts have called fundamentally flawed — and Cassidy agreed “has some issues” – in an attempt to counter decades of rigorous studies.
The senator told Kennedy his history of “undermining confidence in vaccines with unfounded or misleading arguments concerns me” – and risks casting “a shadow over President Trump’s legacy” if people die of vaccine-preventable diseases should he become health secretary.
Sen. Maggie Hassan, a Democrat from New Hampshire, said there’s a real-world ramification for “re-litigating and churning settled science” – diverting money and time that could be spent finding the real cause of autism.
Kennedy claimed there’s no good surveillance system to know that COVID-19 vaccines are safe and lifesaving.
The U.S. tracks vaccine safety through multiple monitoring systems including electronic medical records from a list of health systems. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also checks how vaccines fare internationally, such as during the pandemic when large databases from Israel and the U.K. helped reinforce that the new mRNA vaccines were safe and lowering deaths from the coronavirus.
“You’re applying for the job — clearly you should know this,” said Democratic Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont. “The scientific community has established that COVID vaccines saved millions of lives and you’re casting doubt.”
AAP’s O’Leary said there are about 35,000 cases of cancer related to the HPV virus that could be prevented by that vaccine, including 4,000 deaths per year. “We are already seeing decreases in the number of cases of HPV-related cancers as a result of HPV vaccination.”
Kennedy didn’t answer directly when asked if he stood by claims that the HPV vaccine could cause cancer or other disease. He instead brought up a pending lawsuit and suggested a jury — of non-scientists — would decide.
Sen. Angela Alsobrooks, a Maryland Democrat, asked Kennedy about prior comments that Black people might need a different vaccination schedule than whites. Alsobrooks, who is Black, asked how Kennedy thought she should have been vaccinated differently.
Kennedy referred to some earlier papers suggesting people of African-American ancestry had a stronger immune response to measles and rubella vaccines than white people.
Vaccination recommendations aren’t based on race but on biological factors such as someone’s age and risk of a specific disease. Some studies show Black Americans are more hesitant than whites to receive certain vaccines.
“That is so dangerous,” Alsobrooks told Kennedy.
“There’s no evidence that there needs to be a different vaccine schedule based on race,” said Dr. Amesh Adalja of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. Such statements could make different populations wrongly believe “well, maybe I don’t need as many vaccines” as are recommended.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a prominent anti-vaccine advocate, has long been questioning the safety of vaccines and demanding to see the scientific evidence that supports their use. However, after finally being presented with the evidence, Kennedy Jr. dismissed it as unreliable and biased.
In a recent interview, Kennedy Jr. admitted that he had been given access to numerous studies and reports that demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of vaccines. Despite this, he continued to spread misinformation and doubt about their use, claiming that the science was flawed and manipulated by pharmaceutical companies.
This revelation raises questions about Kennedy Jr.’s motives and credibility in the anti-vaccine movement. It also highlights the importance of critically evaluating sources of information and not blindly following individuals who may have their own agendas.
In the end, the evidence speaks for itself, and the overwhelming consensus among scientists and medical professionals is that vaccines are safe and essential for public health. It is crucial to rely on evidence-based information and not be swayed by misinformation and fearmongering.

RALEIGH, N.C. (WBTV) – Nearly 200 cases have been dismissed after a state trooper in North Carolina made statements that appeared to have been “false and misleading,” officials said.
CBS affiliate WNCN said the trooper initially called into question was Garrett Lee Macario. The station reported that Lorrin Freeman, the Wake County District Attorney, began reviewing Macario’s credibility after he investigated a fatal crash in October.
“We received information the last week in December that there had been an accident, a one-car fatality on Capital Boulevard in October, in which the interaction of the trooper on scene had come into question,” Freeman said via WNCN.
Freeman said she then requested bodycam footage from the day of the crash. During a review, she said “there were statements that were made by that trooper that appear to be false and misleading.” From there, the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) launched an investigation.
WNCN said the state chose not to pursue pending cases that involved Macario, which led to the dismissal of about 180 cases. Freeman said the majority of those cases were related to DWI charges.
Freeman said one reason the cases were dismissed was because DWI investigations are “pretty much one-witness cases.”
During the review of Macario’s conduct, WNCN reported that the credibility of his supervisor, Sgt. Matthew Morrison, was also questioned.
“Without getting into the details of this investigation, there was information in the body cam and dash cam video that I reviewed that also gave rise to concerns about his credibility,” Freeman said of Morrison.
About a dozen cases that involved Morrison — but are separate from Macario’s — were being reviewed.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed to WNCN that both Macario and Morrison were placed on administrative duty, effective Jan. 10. Macario has been with the agency since February 2019, and Morrison since July 2012.
WNCN reported that neither trooper had been charged as of Jan. 24. In addition to the SBI investigation, the station said an administrative investigation by Highway Patrol was also likely.

In a shocking turn of events, nearly 200 cases in North Carolina have been dismissed after a state trooper allegedly made ‘misleading’ statements. The trooper, who has not been named, is accused of providing false information during traffic stops, leading to the dismissal of numerous cases.
This revelation has sparked outrage and concern among the public, as the integrity of law enforcement officers is being called into question. It raises serious doubts about the credibility of the trooper and the validity of the cases he was involved in.
The dismissed cases range from traffic violations to more serious offenses, leaving many individuals wondering if justice has truly been served. The impact of this misconduct is far-reaching, affecting not only the individuals directly involved but also the trust and confidence in the criminal justice system as a whole.
As investigations continue into the trooper’s actions, it is crucial that steps are taken to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The repercussions of this scandal are significant, and it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of upholding honesty and integrity within law enforcement.
The fallout from this case serves as a cautionary tale and a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in our criminal justice system. It is essential that measures are put in place to prevent such incidents from happening again and to restore public trust in law enforcement.

Terry Bradshaw doesn’t believe that postseason history will be made this year as he previously shot down the Kansas City Chiefs’ hopes of accomplishing a Super Bowl three-peat.
On Saturday, star quarterback Patrick Mahomes and company will face off against C.J. Stroud and the Houston Texans in the Divisional Round. With a win over Houston and subsequent victory over either the Baltimore Ravens or Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship game, Kansas City would punch its ticket to a third-consecutive Super Bowl.
Unfortunately for the Chiefs, Bradshaw isn’t expecting them to get that far. While making an appearance on ‘ FOX NFL Sunday ’ last December, he voiced little belief in Kansas City’s playoff chances.

“Are the Chiefs your number one team in the AFC right now?” Charissa Thompson asked Bradshaw, who promptly replied: “They’re not going to win three in a row, but …”
Upon being reminded by Peter Schrager that no NFL team has ever managed to accomplish the feat, Bradshaw added: “That’s one of the reasons. The other reason is, I just think – you see how quick they get rid of the ball now, you see how quick, quick, quick, quick, quick?
“I just think they’re going to load up against a team like Buffalo, they’re going to load up against a team like Baltimore – those are the two teams that could beat them, and I think it’s going to happen, even though it would be in Kansas City.”

Bradshaw’s criticism of the Chiefs came as somewhat of a surprise, considering he dubbed them a heavy favorite to win Super Bowl LIX just one month prior. Discussing Kansas City’s narrow 30-27 win over the Carolina Panthers in Week 12, the 76-year-old said at the time: “How long do they continue doing this and winning [like] this, and will it finally let them down when it counts most? I doubt it.
“I just don’t think that’s going to happen. This football team knows how to win.”
Mahomes, for one, expressed utmost confidence that the Chiefs could win a third-straight Super Bowl not long after securing the second. On the heels of Kansas City’s 25-22 overtime win against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII, he told teammates and coaches while still celebrating on the field: “Hey, we’re not done dawg. I want three, no one’s ever got three … I want back-to-back-to-back.”
Speaking to reporters during a postgame press conference, Mahomes expressed a similar sentiment, adding: “It [would be] legendary. No one’s ever done it, and we knew it’s legendary to win back-to-back.
“I think eight other teams have done it. We had heard it all week. We had talked to the guys [who had gone back-to-back] about it, and we felt like we had the best opportunity that we had ever had to go out there and do that.
“We’ve got to continue to play our best football. We’ll celebrate these next few weeks, and then we’ll get right back at it.”

On Sunday morning, Terry Bradshaw delivered a brutal blow to the hopes of Kansas City Chiefs fans everywhere during FOX NFL Sunday. As the crew discussed the Chiefs’ chances of winning a third consecutive Super Bowl, Bradshaw didn’t hold back in his assessment.
“Let’s be real here, the Chiefs are not winning a third straight Super Bowl,” Bradshaw declared confidently. “They may have a talented roster, but the competition in the AFC is fierce, and repeating as champions is incredibly difficult.”
Bradshaw went on to point out the challenges the Chiefs would face in the playoffs, including potential matchups against powerhouse teams like the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens. He emphasized that the road to a third Super Bowl victory would be anything but easy for Kansas City.
Chiefs fans were left reeling from Bradshaw’s blunt assessment, but the Hall of Famer’s words served as a reality check for those dreaming of another championship parade in Kansas City. While the Chiefs remain a formidable team, Bradshaw made it clear that a three-peat was not in the cards for them this season.
As the regular season winds down and the playoffs loom on the horizon, only time will tell if Bradshaw’s prediction proves to be accurate. But for now, Chiefs fans are coming to terms with the harsh reality that their team may not be destined for a historic three-peat.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A federal appeals court on Friday sided with the Biden administration’s Department of Justice and kept a temporary block on an Iowa law that makes it a state crime for a person to be in Iowa if they are in the U.S. illegally.
But a second order from the 8th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals raises questions on future court proceedings now that President Donald Trump is in the White House.
The department and an immigrant rights groups sued Iowa in May over the law, which looks similar to Texas and Oklahoma laws that are also on hold while courts consider whether they unconstitutionally usurp federal immigration authority. A district court judge granted the Biden administration and the immigrant rights group a temporary block on the law, and Iowa appealed.
The law would let state and local officials arrest and charge people who have outstanding deportation orders or who previously have been removed from or denied admission to the U.S.
The federal appeals court said that “contrary to Iowa’s belief,” the state law would likely contradict federal officials’ discretion in how to enforce immigration policy and complicate U.S. foreign policy.
But the federal appeals court issued a second decision Friday that might complicate the legal battle in Iowa if Trump’s administration withdraws the Department of Justice’s complaint.
The federal appeals court said that the lawsuit filed by Iowa Migrant Movement for Justice on behalf of its organization and two individuals should be dismissed by the district court judge — because the U.S. v. Iowa lawsuit makes it moot.
“Right now we’re just figuring out what our legal next steps are,” said Veronica Fowler, communications director for the ACLU of Iowa, one of the legal teams representing Iowa Migrant Movement for Justice, “because obviously we are committed to doing everything we can to strike down this really terrible law.”
The Department of Justice did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the future of the lawsuit, which would proceed in the lower court.
Under President Joe Biden, Republican governors and lawmakers across the country accused the president of a failure to enforce federal immigration law and manage the southern border. Most are now lining up to support Trump in his pledge to crack down on illegal immigration and deport many who are living in the U.S. illegally.
A December joint statement from 26 Republican governors, including Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, said they “stand ready to utilize every tool at our disposal — whether through state law enforcement or the National Guard — to support President Trump in this vital mission.”
Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird said in a statement Friday that the “battle is far from over.”
“As President Trump works nationally to fix the mess Biden and (Vice President Kamala) Harris created on the southern border, we will continue fighting in Iowa to defend our laws and keep families safe,” Bird said.
The Iowa immigration law that sparked controversy has remained blocked, as confirmed by a recent ruling from a US appeals court. The law, which sought to crack down on undocumented immigrants in the state, had faced legal challenges and was put on hold pending further court decisions.
Despite this victory for opponents of the law, a second lawsuit challenging its constitutionality is set to be dismissed. This development has left many wondering about the future of immigration enforcement in Iowa and the potential impact on immigrant communities.
Stay tuned for more updates on this ongoing legal battle and its implications for immigration policy in the state.

Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler Umar Nazir Mir produced a brilliant spell as he dismissed Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane and Shivam Dube during the Ranji Trophy match against Mumbai on Thursday. The 31-year-old troubles batters with his pace and bounce as Mumbai kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Mir dismissed Rohit for 3 with a short-pitched delivery and then clean bowled Rahane for 12. Dube was dismissed for a duck as he was caught by Kanhaiya Wadhawan. It was a stunning show from Mir who is an experienced campaigner for Jammu and Kashmir in domestic cricket.
Mir made his first-call debut in 2013 and since then, he has taken 138 wickets in 57 matches. In List A cricket, he has 54 wickets while the fast bowler has taken 32 wickets in T20s.
Mir, who hails from Pulwama and in 6-Foot-4 tall, was also named in India C’s squad for the 2018–19 Deodhar Trophy.
The much-anticipated return to domestic cricket for India captain Rohit Sharma and his opening partner in Tests Yashasvi Jaiswal was a huge disappointment as the duo was dismissed cheaply in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir, here on Thursday.
Rohit and Jaiswal had paired up for the first time ever for defending champions Mumbai, but it was not a happy return to the domestic grind for the star cricketers who were dismissed for 3 and 4 respectively.
Jaiswal was pinned in front of the wicket by J&K’s right-arm pacer Auqib Nabi, who made the most of the fresh wicket to move the new ball dangerously off the surface here at the BKC Ground.
But it was the manner in which the India captain fell that was disappointing. Looking to force the ball on the on side, Rohit got a leading edge which was caught by J&K skipper Paras Dogra at mid-off.
Interestingly, Dogra took the field wearing the No. 9 jersey that is usually worn by Yudhvir Singh, thus creating some confusion.
The 31-year-old Umar continued to make inroads as he ended Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane’s resistance by cleaning him up for 12.
While the turnout to watch the India cricketing stars at the stadium was low, those in nearby buildings, who were watching the action from their office floors, returned to work soon after the 37-year-old Rohit was dismissed.

Indian cricket team skipper Rohit Sharma‘s disastrous form continued as he was dismissed for just 3 during the Ranji Trophy encounter between Mumbai and Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday. Rohit, who played his first Ranji match since 2015, looked quite uncomfortable against the bouncers from the Jammu and Kashmir bowlers. Rohit scored just 3 runs off 19 deliveries before he was dismissed by fast bowler Umar Nazir Mir. It was a short of length delivery from Mir and Rohit completely miscued his shot. Yudhvir Singh was placed perfectly to complete the catch as Rohit’s innings came to an end.
Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has finally relented and has agreed to allow the Indian cricket team’s jersey for the Champions Trophy 2025 to sport Pakistan’s name as the host.
Sources from Pakistan informed IANS a few days ago that the BCCI has refused to allow the national men’s team to use Pakistan’s name on the official kit for the Champions Trophy 2025.
But now, the BCCI has finally decided that the team will sport Pakistan’s name on the jersey.
“We will follow whatever are the ICC guidelines,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told Cricbuzz. When pointed out that the official ICC logo has Pakistan beneath it, Saikia reiterated stating, “We will follow the ICC directive.”
Saikia’s assertion puts to rest the uproar over India filing an objection to the official logo since the team will not be travelling to Pakistan. Pakistan are the designated hosts of the Champions Trophy which will be played from February 19 to March 9, the cricbuzz report said.
India will play their matches in Dubai after the PCB accepted a proposal to host the event on a hybrid model after the Indian government refused to allow the national team to travel to Pakistan.

Team India brought its A-game to the table in the first session on Day 2 of the Sydney Test. The pacers ran riot and claimed four wickets to put pressure on Australia and pulled the visitors back into the game after they were bundled out for 185. Mohammed Siraj claimed two, while Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna picked a wicket each in the first session as Australia were 101/5 at Lunch break.
The Indian bowlers were fired right from the start as skipper Bumrah resumed his on-field battle with young Sam Konstas on Day 2, and Virat Kohli joined the party once again.
Bumrah dismissed Marnus Labuschangne early in the day to pile up pressure on Australia, but Konstas kept trying to score quick runs. Kohli shared a plan with Bumrah to trouble the young batter.
The former India captain had a chat with Bumrah before an over and advised him to bowl a ball closer to his body to create a chance of getting his wicket.
‘Yes Bumrah, there is your man now,” Kohli teased Konstas while running towards Bumrah.
‘Bowl him close towards his body, he might go for attacking shots. There is a chance to get him out. We have one over, take this chance,” Kohli told Bumrah.
The Indian skipper took it seriously and nipped back in Konstas. He tried to pull on the first back but missed it completely and got hit on the body. The Aussie batter tried to ease off some pressure by stepping out, but Bumrah followed him and once again bowled towards his body, and he failed to time it.
Bumrah didn’t hold back after that and taunted Konstas that he was batting line as a number 10 batter.
The Aussie opener was later dismissed by Mohammed Siraj for 23 after edging the ball to Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Meanwhile, Konstas also had a brief on-field altercation with the Indian skipper on Day 1 also where Bumrah’s face clearly indicated he wasn’t pleased with whatever Konstas had said to him while standing at the non-striker’s end.
The atmosphere flared up after that as Bumrah was all fired up. On the next delivery after the fiery exchange, the Indian skipper gave a fitting reply to the young Australian. He put Usman Khawaja in an awkward stance to lure out a thick outside edge, with KL Rahul taking a sharp catch at the second slip.
In a thrilling showdown in Sydney, Indian cricket stars Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah left Australian batsman Sam Konstas feeling the heat as they relentlessly hounded him on the field. The duo were relentless in their attack, with Kohli even going as far as to comment on Konstas’ batting skills, saying he was “batting like a no. 10.”
Despite the pressure from Kohli and Bumrah, it was ultimately Indian bowler Mohammed Siraj who dismissed Konstas, ending his innings and securing a victory for the Indian team. The intense competition and fierce gameplay from all players made for an exciting match that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
The performance by Kohli and Bumrah showcased their incredible talent and determination, while Konstas’ struggle against their formidable skills highlighted the intensity of the match. Overall, it was a memorable showdown between these cricket giants that will surely be talked about for years to come.
